HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jessica Thomas, principal of Allen STEM Magnet School, wants to remind parents that their students who are in kindergarten through 6th grade in the 2024-2025 school year are welcome to apply.

"Everyone has an equal shot at getting in, regardless of if you live in the USD 308 boundaries or if you're outside of them," Thomas said. "STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. A magnet school is just a school that has a specific focus. That's what we specifically focus on. We are all about hands on education, giving kids opportunities to do things that they would do in the real world, to practice for careers."

There is a special open house event Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the school at 403 West 10th in Hutchinson.

"We specifically focus on engineering," Thomas said. "We have an engineering curriculum that all of our kids, K-6, get to participate in, where they are building things, designing things, testing out their designs. Those are things we try to incorporate daily."

There will be students and staff members there to meet anyone interested, answer your questions, and show what the school is all about. There will also be special activities for incoming kindergarten students.

Allen STEM Magnet Open House is Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All schools were allowed to be a part of the summer meals program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the pandemic. When the eligibility changed back to pre-pandemic rules, Buhler USD 313 was no longer eligible. That has changed.

"We're so excited about it," said Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "Robin McGlynn, our food service director, she's phenomenal. She's done a lot of research. The law changed this year to offer it to schools that qualify at 50% free and reduced. We have one school that qualified. That was in Buhler. We're going to serve these meals May 28 to Aug. 2. We're going to serve them at Buhler High School."

The meal pick up will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays.

"You can drive through and pick up a hot lunch, with breakfast for the next day," Couchman said. "It will feed your student lunch and breakfast. You can go through every day, get yourself breakfast and lunch. The first time you go through, your student will have to be with you. Then, after that, you'll be given a number you can show the next time you pick up. You don't have to pack up the five or six kids or whatever you have, you can just show your number and pick up the meals."

Summer meals back in USD 313

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Twenty-two students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. One of the Self scholars is Josh Navarro of Hutchinson.&nbsp; Navarro has earned bachelor's degrees in political science and public administration from KU and is an incoming master's student in public affairs &amp; administration.

The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding seniors from KU who will be transitioning into their first year of a master’s or doctoral degree program at KU in the fall 2024 semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship, capable of envisioning and attaining goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award, $1,000 professional development award, leadership and career development training, and an opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.&nbsp;

Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship.&nbsp; Since 1991, the Self Graduate Fellowship has supported over 200 doctoral students.

The Self Memorial Scholarship was launched and permanently endowed in 2014. The first Scholars were awarded in 2018. Since 2018, the scholarship has supported nearly 100 graduate students. The overall mission of Self Graduate Programs is to provide funding and development opportunities for exceptional graduate students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their field of study and society as a whole.

Tax payments due May 10

BUHLER, Kan. — The Ad Astra Alternative Academy for USD 313 currently hosts 10 high school students. The Board of Education approved the addition of seventh and eighth grade students to the alternative school for the 2024-25 school year at their meeting on April 8.

 Ad Astra Virtual Academy Director Erica Shook said the alternative academy will probably start taking applications at the beginning of May.

"It is kind of a work in progress," Shook said. "We will keep it a very small group because that's the kind of learning environment that we are trying to create. We want to keep our student to teacher ratios very, very low, because that's kind of the idea behind the program. We will have very limited spaces next year. Probably like five to seven spaces. We've offered it to our current virtual students first and we have a few that are interested in filling those spots and then we'll open it up to the rest of the school district."

The alternative academy opened last year under Ad Astra Academies, which also oversees Ad Astra Virtual Academy. &nbsp;

The alternative school can legally enroll seventh through twelfth grade students throughout the state. Both are separate registered schools in Kansas.&nbsp;

Shook said the addition of seventh and eighth grade students to the alternative school is needed for variety of reasons.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"Some of it is mental health related, some of its physical health related, some are special education needs related, that traditional brick and mortar settings do not work well for them," Shook said. "They can't be their most successful academic self in those settings so families were looking for options like home school and virtual school. Well,&nbsp;home school is very very difficult and virtual school can be very challenging too if you don't have a strong learning guide support system at home. If parents are working, it's hard for them to do, things like that. Family dynamics are very different for everyone.

Shook said the virtual school at Ad Astra Academies is set up to where students still come to a traditional school building. The alternative setting is set up for students to be a part of the virtual program at USD 313. However, students are not in the traditional school setting.&nbsp;Shook said there will not be any additional staff hired with the seventh and eighth grade additions to the alternative academy.

Ad Astra to add middle school grades

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will celebrate its annual commencement ceremony this Friday, May 3 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will recognize students graduating with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of General Studies, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Applied Science and/or Certificates of Technical Education.

“The academic achievements of our students deserve to be properly recognized and celebrated”, stated HutchCC President Dr. Carter File. “We are excited to gather with our graduates along with their friends and families to honor them.”

HutchCC commencement is Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On January 8, 2024, House Bill 2481 was introduced that would designate K-96 at Haven the PFC Henry Lee Fisher Memorial Highway after a local soldier who was KIA in Vietnam.

The bill quickly passed both the Kansas House and Senate with unanimous support and on April 18, 2024 was signed into law by Governor Laura Kelly.

The family is now responsible for the over $12,000 cost of the two memorial signs.

A fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, May 9 at Baker Ballroom at 17 East 2nd in Hutchinson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. 100% of the proceeds go to pay for these memorial highway signs.

The event will feature live music from local singer/songwriter Morgan Wilk, a catered taco bar, a cash bar, and a huge silent auction. We will also have a very special guest to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner”.

Some of the silent auction items include: A ride in a Cessna UC-78 WWII-era plane, several Mother’s Day gift baskets, a Midway Motors gift basket that includes an oil change and full car detail, Abilene Smoky Valley Train Ride for four, a three piece outdoor patio furniture set from Bold Corporate, a weekend golf outing at Firekeeper Course in Topeka, plus a lot more.

Henry Lee Fisher grew up in Haven and graduated Haven High School in 1965. Right after graduation he joined the Army with two buddies but was actually denied due to a hernia that was discovered during his physical.

He could have likely walked away at that point and avoided Vietnam but he had a strong and burning desire to serve his country just like his father did during WWII.

Henry came home, had surgery to repair the hernia, and went back. He was assigned to the 16th Infantry- 1st Infantry Division and sent to the frontlines of Vietnam.

Sadly, PFC Henry Lee Fisher would never return home as he was KIA in 1967.

Please join the community May 9 in helping to honor this soldier’s service and ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy to this day.

 </figure>Vieyra Honors FoundationHUTCHINSON, Kan. — On January 8, 2024, House Bill 2481 was introduced that would designate K-96 at Haven the PFC Henry Lee Fisher Memorial Highway after a local soldier who was KIA in Vietnam.The bill quickly passed both the Kansas House and Senate with unanimous support and on April 18, 2024 was signed into law by Governor Laura Kelly.The family is now responsible for the over $12,000 cost of the two memorial signs.A fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, May 9 at Baker Ballroom at 17 East 2nd in Hutchinson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. 100% of the proceeds go to pay for these memorial highway signs.The event will feature live music from local singer/songwriter Morgan Wilk, a catered taco bar, a cash bar, and a huge silent auction. Date set for 2024 Festival of Remembrance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sign up your child for camp at the Hutchinson Zoo before May 15 in order to get them a camp t-shirt! Camp t-shirts are a great way to keep a memory from their week at camp.

This year, every week of camp will have a different theme! Themes will be posted when registration for camps goes online.

Students entering PreK/Kindergarten Fall 24 (must be at least 4 years old and potty trained)

Sign your child up for a little extra time at the zoo before and after camp. During this extended session, staff will supervise campers and offer free play opportunities, an additional snack, and self-paced nature-themed activities.

Available for students entering 1st grade and up for an additional $40 per camper from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and/or 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. during camp weeks.

Hutchinson Zoo offering summer camps

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Following a comprehensive selection process, the Bethany College Board of Directors announces members of the Presidential Search Committee appointed during their board meeting on April 26, 2024. The committee composition aligns with board by-laws, showcasing diverse viewpoints within the Bethany College community.

Dr. Rob Habiger ‘69, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, leads the committee as Chair. Habiger brings a wealth of expertise from his career in management and technical roles at Conoco Phillips and Spectraseis, complemented by his unwavering dedication to Bethany College as a former visiting faculty member and current board member. He and his wife, Celeste '69, received the 2018 Bethany College Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their service in and beyond the Bethany community.

Becky Anderson '69, secretary of the board and a well-known Lindsborg resident, will also serve on the committee. Anderson's background in development and public service, including her tenure in Bethany College's Advancement Office and her role as mayor of Lindsborg, enriches the committee with invaluable insights.

The committee is further supported by appointing committed board members Shane Reif '09, Paul Fishburn '91, and Dr. Marie Friedemann, each contributing unique expertise and leadership. Reif, with a background in human resources management, serves as Chair of the Board's Governance Committee. Fishburn,

President of the Healthcare Group at Outlier, brings extensive experience in business operations and strategic leadership and will serve as the Chair of the Business and Finance Committee beginning July 1. Friedemann, Director of Jesuit Worldwide Learning at Regis University, offers over 30 years of invaluable experience in higher education and is currently Chair of the Student Experience and Outcome Committee.

The committee includes distinguished faculty members Associate Professor Marcus Hensel, Associate Professor Laura Jackson-Stenlund, and Assistant Professor Christi Wicks. Hensel, specializing in English teaching for grades 6-12, has received prestigious teaching awards. He has served at Bethany since 2014. Jackson-Stenlund, Chair of the Exercise Science Department, has made significant contributions to Bethany College's athletic training and exercise science programs since joining the faculty in 2011. Wicks has served Bethany since 2022 as an assistant professor of psychology and Title IX coordinator. Wicks brings substantial expertise to the committee.

Representing the staff, Tessa Peters '14, Bethany College Dean of Student Affairs, is committed to enhancing student well-being. Her contributions will be invaluable in ensuring student input throughout the search process. Peters is highly involved in the community and serves as co-chair of the Hyllningsfest Committee.

Laura Moreno '09, Dean of Athletics, will bring an understanding of the student-athlete, who represents 80% of the student body at Bethany. She brings a wealth of experience from her tenure in various roles within Bethany College's athletics department.

Jody Baker '84 devoted 31 years to elementary education as a teacher and principal. She was recognized as elementary school principal of the year in 2011 by the Kansas State Board of Education. Following her educational career, Baker transitioned into consulting, currently focusing on coaching school leaders in Missouri on implementing positive behavior support systems. She continues to be actively involved with Bethany College as a devoted member of the Alumni Council.

Additionally, the committee benefits from representing the Lindsborg community through Larry Van Der Wege '94, CEO of Lindsborg Community Hospital and 2023 recipient of Bethany College's Distinguished Graduate Award. The Kansas Hospital Association recently recognized Van Der Wege's exemplary leadership during the pandemic. His connection to Bethany College, Lindsborg stakeholders, and strategic visioning experience will be invaluable to the search committee.

Cheryl Rasmussen, Board Chair, expressed confidence in the committee's leadership, stating, "We are fortunate to have someone with Rob's experience chairing our search committee. I am very confident in his ability to lead the committee's work." Bethany College announces Presidential Search Committee

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NAACP monthly meeting is Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the basement of the HCC Student Union Building. The guest speaker will be Rita Valenciano from the Justice Department, Kansas City, MO. 

 Valenciano, a conciliation specialist with the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service (CRS), has dealt at length with how the agency works to build stronger relationships between police departments and communities.   Employed as a Conciliation Specialist from 2008 - 2021 for the U.S. Department of Justice / Community Relations Service (CRS), in 2022, She is now the Training Specialist in the CRS Program Development division. 

She trains conciliation specialists from across the country to provide programs that assist in addressing perceived or actual discrimination or harassment based upon race, color or national origin under Title X of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  All are welcome.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rotary Leadership Camp offers an opportunity to discuss the possibilities and responsibilities of being a servant leader, and highlights what Rotary is doing in different communities. 

Throughout the camp students will learn about themselves and others, and about motivation and teamwork. The students will discover that he or she cannot be a leader without being a servant first. 

RYLA is a leadership camp from May 28-May 31 at Southwestern College.  If selected, the Rotary Club would fully sponsor the student.  RYLA is open to any Reno County students entering grades 10-12 for the 24-25 school year.

Rotary seeking leadership camp interest

RICE AND RENO COUNTY — Resurfacing will start soon on Old K-14 in Sterling and Reno County.

A contractor for the Kansas Department of Transportation will do an asphalt mill/overlay on Old K-14 through Sterling. The work is expected to start on the south side of Garfield Avenue and move north to a little north of West Kansas Avenue.

The Sterling work is expected to start Monday, May 6, and be completed around Wednesday, May 15.

The contractor will then begin work on Old K-14 in Reno County from Sego Road to Dean Road, including through Nickerson.

The Reno County work is expected to begin around Thursday, May 16, and be completed around late May.

During the work, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Old K-14 resurfacing is set in Sterling, Reno County

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) –&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Senate&nbsp;Committee on&nbsp;Commerce –&nbsp;today joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring the&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act.

This legislation would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in new vehicles at no additional charge. Similar legislation has been introduced in the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;House&nbsp;of Representatives.&nbsp;

“AM radios connect rural communities with news, sports, weather and&nbsp;much more,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“In parts of the country with limited connectivity, AM radios are often the only means to notify residents of tornadoes, snow storms and other dangerous weather. This legislation will help make certain new vehicles are&nbsp;equipped with an AM radio,&nbsp;so that folks in every corner of the country can stay connected to broadcasting and local updates during emergencies.”

This legislation was introduced by Sens. Sen. Moran Co-sponsors Bill to Protect AM Radio

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As a highlight of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s 35th year of serving Reno County, Match Day, the popular day of community generosity, returns May 1. The purpose of Match Day is to strengthen the endowments of local organizations.

"An endowment is a critical piece to having a sustainable, effective, nonprofit organization," said Aubrey Abbott Patterson with the Foundation. "They'll have a checking account they use for everyday expenses. We hope they have a reserve account with six to nine months worth of operating capital. Then, an endowment really sets organizations apart to say, we are planning for the long term. We are investing in ourselves and our savings account, so that over time, we know that we can become stronger and invest in ourselves at exactly the right time."

Members of the public are invited to demonstrate their love for the community by coming to the Wiley Building, 100 N. Main St., Hutchinson, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 to give to their choice of 38 Reno County nonprofit organizations.&nbsp;

"Inflation really knocks us down a bit," Patterson said. "An endowment builds that kind of hedge in. Over time, if the markets earn eight to ten percent, as we've shown that they have, we can still pay out every year, five percent of an endowment to the nonprofits. That money, they can come to depend on, while still putting three percent back into the fund. Two percent back into the fund for growth and one percent that pays the foundation's fees and keeps us going."

Those gifts will be met proportionately from the community foundation’s $100,000 matching pool.

"The way we will figure how much an organization gets is by the percent of the total that they raise," Patterson said. "If your favorite organization brings in 10% of the total gifts, our match will be 10% of our $100,000 matching pool."

State Fair Board to meet May 7

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team wrapped up a strong spring with a national championship from the All East Intercollegiate Livestock Judging contest hosted by Mississippi State University April 18-20.

This was the inaugural event for junior colleges to compete in this type of contest in an organized setting. Not only was HutchCC the high-ranking junior college team, but they outscored every university team in the overall contest.

Eight freshmen and three sophomores competed in this all-encompassing three-day event that consisted of extensive evaluations of market cattle, swine and sheep.

In addition to their win at All East, the students were the high placing junior college team at the North Central Meat Animal Evaluation Contest in March hosted by the University of Illinois and ranked ahead of all universities there as well in the breeding animal selection contest.

The Hutchinson Community College meat animal evaluation team is coached by Kane Austin and assisted by Kami McComb and Will Banks.

HutchCC Meat Evaluation Team claims National Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you or your family member is getting older and looking to downsize, think ahead about what that might mean for your pet.

"A lot of it is knowing your pets," said Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital. "You went from your pets being able to run around and have all this land and kind of free roam and now, you're in an apartment. Your lifestyle changed. Are you getting up early and going on walks to release some of that energy for your pet. Are you doing walks after work? Can you go home at lunch and do a quick walk? Walks are good for us, too."

It's also sometimes best for the animal to be offered to a different owner who may have a similar living situation to what is being left behind.

"We'll have elderly clients that are like, hey, we've got to move," Miller said. "We can't take our pets with us. Rehoming is always an option. Sometimes that can be hard for the owner, but sometimes the owner knows. They're like, hey, I need to rehome my pet, because it's not fair to them to not have these things that they have always had. I want them to have those things. There's always that.&nbsp;

Miller says there are times where she's able to match up current clients with prospective ones.&nbsp;

"A lot of times, it's like, I don't want a puppy," Miller said. "I don't want to do the potty training. I don't want to do this. I want a dog that's already older and just kind of ready to enter the family. If you're talking with your veterinarian and you're in regularly, we know your pet. A lot of times we know if they'd be a good fit for someone who is looking for someone just like them."

"You went from your pets being able to run around and have all this land and kind of free roam and now, you're in an apartment. Your lifestyle changed. Are you getting up early and going on walks to release some of that energy for your pet. Are you doing walks after work? Can you go home at lunch and do a quick walk? Walks are good for us, too."It's also sometimes best for the animal to be offered to a different owner who may have a similar living situation to what is being left behind."We'll have elderly clients that are like, hey, we've got to move," Miller said. "We can't take our pets with us. Rehoming is always an option. Sometimes that can be hard for the owner, but sometimes the owner knows. They're like, hey, I need to rehome my pet, because it's not fair to them to not have these things that they have always had. I want them to have those things. There's always that.&nbsp;Miller says there are times where she's able to match up current clients with prospective ones.&nbsp;"A lot of times, it's like, I don't want a puppy," Miller said. "I don't want to do the potty training. I don't want to do this. I want a dog that's already older and just kind of ready to enter the family. If you're talking with your veterinarian and you're in regularly, we know your pet. Think of pets when needing to change lifestyle

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center to act on the hiring of new Hutchinson Community College President Dr. Tricia Paramore.

Paramore, the vice president of academic affairs at HutchCC since February 2023 and a 28-year veteran of the institution, will become president of the college July 1.

From a beginning pool of 46 applicants, five semifinalists emerged and were interviewed by the search committee. The field narrowed to three finalists, each participating in a daylong interview on campus.

Hundreds of people heard the three finalists and were asked to fill out evaluation forms. The forms were then distributed to all board members for their review and to assist them in the decision-making process.

The details of the agreement will be part of the meeting minutes on Wednesday.
