KINGMAN COUNTY, Kan. — Fire departments across Kingman County have been awarded a $639,106.28 federal grant to replace breathing equipment used during fires and other hazardous calls.

The departments announced Tuesday that their application for a fiscal year 2025 Assistance to Firefighters Grant had been approved. The funding will pay for self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, air packs, cylinders, face masks and related components. It also will cover cylinder storage racks and a cascade system used to refill breathing-air cylinders.

Firefighters rely on the equipment when entering environments where smoke or other hazards make the air unsafe to breathe. Reliable breathing protection allows crews to search for trapped occupants and carry out rescue and firefighting work.

Kingman County commissioners committed $31,955.32 earlier this year to cover the grant’s required local match, according to the departments.
