The We are Salthawks - Ultimate Benefit &amp; Auction returns for it's third year on Saturday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sunflower North building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

This is the third year of the event, after it replaced the Ultimate Tailgate, which benefited the football teams.&nbsp;

"After that one ended, coach Vernon decided to let everybody know that we're going to change it all to all athletes, which it's been great," Amanda Parks, with the Hutchinson High School Booster Club said. "It's been great because we not only doubled it, we're not quite triple, but we went from I think they were raising $30,000 to $40,000 to last year we gave $87,000."

The money that is raised at the event benefits over 400 student-athletes from all athletic programs at Hutchinson High School. This list includes camps for K-12, meals for 400+ student-athletes, equipment safety and reconditioning, travel expenses, new team equipment, gear and uniforms, and student admission to events.

"You don't even have to be an alumni," Parks said. "If you just want a night out to come eat dinner and enjoy some live music, I mean you hear everybody say there is nothing to do in Hutch, there is plenty to do in Hutch and here's an example."

The event will feature dinner, live music provided by the band Save Oz, plus a <a href="https://e.givesmart.com/events/uZK/i/">silent and live auction</a> and raffle chances.&nbsp;

Tickets for the event are still available and are $50. You can purchase your tickets by <a href="https://e.givesmart.com/events/uZK/">clicking here</a>. All attendees must be 21 years or older to enter.&nbsp;

Hutch High Booster Club to host fundraiser March 29

On the evening of March 21, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Lyons Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a saturation patrol in and around the City of Lyons.

Saturation patrols are strategic, proactive efforts designed to increase law enforcement visibility in targeted areas, disrupt criminal activity, and enhance public safety through community presence. These operations are intended to address concerns related to impaired driving, drug activity, underage alcohol possession, and other traffic and safety-related offenses.

Throughout the evening, deputies and officers conducted 56 contacts with members of the public. During these interactions, they addressed a variety of safety concerns, including drivers operating vehicles without valid licenses or insurance, individuals in possession of alcohol underage, and other violations that pose risks to public safety.

This patrol was part of our ongoing effort to serve and protect the people of Rice County through proactive, community-focused policing. We are especially grateful to the Lyons Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office for their partnership and professionalism in supporting this effort.

Ronnie was our very first pull from death row at Wichita Shelter. He was blind and completely shut down at the shelter. 

We had a foster step up and he has been amazing with her but due to his nervous nature (being blind) he hasn't been able to be taken out for events. 

He is about 2 years old, very loveable and mellow boy. He lives with other dogs and a cat. We would recommend no children (probably teenagers ok) due to him being nervous and taking time to warm up. 

He is kennel trained, potty trained, loves to lounge in the sun or snuggle on a lap. He enjoys chewing on toys as well. 

Ronnie is just a very good boy who needs a calm patient home to give him time to open up and see the wonderful boy he is!

The City of Hutchinson will begin a roadway improvement project on W 30th Street between N Main St and N Adams starting Monday, March 24th. The project will involve the removal of the existing road, curb, and gutter on the north side of 30th Street. The road will be narrowed to create space for a new multi-use trail along the north side.

In addition to removing the old road infrastructure, crews will install a new base, asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, and pavement markings, and perform grading in the affected areas. This work will help improve both the safety and accessibility of the street for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

During construction, thru traffic will be closed between Main and Adams streets. Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route via 17th Avenue, Monroe Street, and Main Street. Residents will have access to 30th Street, but there will be lane changes, lane reductions, and active construction in the area.

The closure of thru traffic will begin Monday, March 24th, and the project is expected to last approximately 7 weeks. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution and follow all detour signs in place during construction.

30th Avenue reconstruction project to begin on Monday

Beginning March 24 through April 4, 2025, law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma will have increased enforcement near high schools to raise awareness on roadway safety. 

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens 15 to 18 years old in the United States ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence.

Officers will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up. 

Remind teens that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn about the importance of driving safely.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is alerting the public to a scam involving fraudulent text messages, known as smishing, that falsely claim to be from KDOT and demand payment for unpaid tolls.

Do not click on the link. It is not a KDOT website. Clicking the link in the text can expose victims to financial fraud, allowing scammers access to bank accounts and personal data.

KDOT does not collect tolls for road usage and does not send unsolicited text messages. The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), a separate state agency responsible for turnpike toll collection, also has been targeted in similar scams.

KDOT warns of smishing scam

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly before 4 a.m. on Friday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

When crews arrived, they found a home engulfed in flames and was threatening two nearby homes. &nbsp;Crews used Vent Enter Search operations in the home to check for injured residents, but then they fell back to a defensive attack to fight the fire and protect the two nearby homes. &nbsp;

The fire department said that they had the fire under control in approximately 90 minutes. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Crews from the public works department were brought in to assist in the removal of debris and the process of removing the victim from the home. The residence was occupied at the time of the fire by an adult victim and one dog, both were found deceased.  &nbsp;

One victim was located inside the structure. The department had to bring in a structural collapse team and special equipment to shore up a load bearing wall and chimney before they could remove the victim and complete extinguishment of the fire. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire department officials say that the structure is a complete loss, and the two nearby residences were damaged but remain habitual. &nbsp;

The nearby residences were occupied at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries to those residents or to the firefighters. The HFD investigator and the State Fire Marshal are on scene to determine the cause of the fire and a medical examiner from Wichita has been brought in to assist with the investigation. 

At this time, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.&nbsp;

Crews will remain on scene for multiple hours, please avoid the area. &nbsp;

The European Union placed tariffs on United States grain imports in retaliation for the United States placing tariffs on steel and aluminum.&nbsp; So, in retaliation, President Trump has threatened to put more retaliatory tariffs on the European Union on imports of champagnes, wines and spirits sent to the U.S.

&nbsp; &nbsp;These tariffs could range as high as 200%, but President Trump said he wouldn't put them on if EU removed the tariffs it imposed on U.S. spirits on Wednesday.&nbsp; 

The President still says that these tariffs are reciprocal, and his goal is to make trade with all countries fair and eliminate the trade deficit.

Ag Minute: European Union tariffs 

The weekly Drought Monitor was released on Thursday.   

This week featured the introduction of an area of severe drought along the Oklahoma state line.  Areas of significantly dry and moderate drought have expanded across the state.  As of Tuesday morning, 89-percent of the state of Kansas is under some level of drought.  

The was no measurable precipitation for the area in the seven-day period for this week's report.&nbsp;

Average precipitation for the week is 45-hundreths of an inch, and the normal month to date is 1.08” and as of Tuesday we have only received 4-hundreths of an inch, which is a deficit of 1.04” of precipitation.  

NOTE:  The data collected for the National Drought Monitor is collected at 7 a.m. on the Tuesday of the week.  The drought monitor is released by the Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska at 7 a.m. Thursday.

 </figure>The was no measurable precipitation for the area in the seven-day period for this week's report.&nbsp;Average precipitation for the week is 45-hundreths of an inch, and the normal month to date is 1.08” and as of Tuesday we have only received 4-hundreths of an inch, which is a deficit of 1.04” of precipitation. NOTE: The data collected for the National Drought Monitor is collected at 7 a.m. on the Tuesday of the week. The drought monitor is released by the Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Drought Monitor shows no relief

At approximately 7:30 PM on 03/20/25 Reno County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to an injury accident just west of the Turon city limits on Sun City Rd. 

Reno County EMS and Reno County Fire District 7 were also dispatched to the accident. Upon arrival of the first responders, they found the accident involved a single vehicle. 

A 2000 Dodge Dakota pick-up collided with a bridge railing and continued past the bridge. 

The truck was occupied by 3 people, 2 of which had minor to no injuries. The 3rd occupant, a juvenile, was found to be deceased at the scene. 

The names of those involved are being withheld at this time. This accident is still under investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Accident near Turon leaves juvenile dead, two others with minor injuries 

March 21 is National Down Syndrome Day. On this occasion, we spoke with Max and Terry Bringle about their daughter Kelli’s journey.

Kelli was born 40 years ago with a bleak prognosis.

“That physician, on the very first day, started listing all the things she’d never be able to do,” Terry recalled. “They told us we’d be able to keep her home for a while, but eventually, she would have to go to an institution.”

As first-time parents, it was devastating news.

“The thing that parents of children with Down syndrome need immediately is support,” Max said. “You don’t know what direction to turn. You’re in a labyrinth.”

With support from the medical community and organizations like TECH, Kelli has thrived.

“The infant child program at TECH started working with us when she was 6 weeks old,” Terry said. “We had a speech therapist, a physical therapist, and a teacher come to our house once a week. They showed Max and me what to do—how to help her walk, exercises for her mouth to teach her to keep her tongue in. Without TECH, we wouldn’t have known how to do any of it.”

The Bringles emphasize the importance of early intervention, advocacy, and community support. They highlighted Kelli’s achievements and struggles, including open-heart surgery at 14 months old.

“She did have a heart condition and had surgery at 14 months,” Terry said. “But we were fortunate—she’s never needed heart medication or restricted activity.”

That active lifestyle led to her involvement in the Special Olympics.

“She’s been competing in Special Olympics for 25 years,” Terry said. “She’s participated in all the sports offered in our area and has been recognized as the most inspirational athlete for the state of Kansas. She’s in the Special Olympics Kansas Hall of Fame and was named Big 12 Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.”

Max and Terry encourage parents to seek early help and not accept limitations.

“We found out we had to be advocates for her,” Max said. “And by advocating, we realized we could make decisions—decisions people often take for granted. People tend to just listen to their doctor, but we learned we could fire doctors.

“We could have intense conversations with them, demand information before a test, and question procedures,” he continued. “There are different forms of Down syndrome, and understanding that is important.”

Annual Career Connections Job Fair to be held on April 3

NEW YORK (AP) — Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner abruptly resigned from his top post at the U.S. passenger railroad this week.

Wednesday’s announcement signaled that the leadership change came down to Amtrak maintaining support from U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement, Gardner said he was stepping down “to ensure that Amtrak continues to enjoy the full faith and confidence of this administration.”

A successor for Gardner was not immediately named.

Gardner’s departure also arrives just weeks after billionaire Elon Musk&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/elon-musk-says-post-office-amtrak-should-be-privatized-2025-03-05/" target="_blank">floated</a>&nbsp;the idea of privatizing Amtrak, as well as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-postal-service-doge-agreement-daf3bf54fa0718908791fcb368b4d9d8">U.S. Postal Service</a>, at a Morgan Stanley tech conference earlier this month.

Musk, who has been at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-elon-musk-doge-lawsuits-9f6cb9e7f695ee3ad7fa97743a6bf2de">forefront of the Trump administration’s</a>&nbsp;aggressive push to downsize the federal government through the Department of Government Efficiency,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/05/business/musk-usps-amtrak-privatization/index.html" target="_blank">reportedly</a>&nbsp;called Amtrak “kind of embarrassing” — while comparing the U.S. carrier to passenger rails seen in other countries, such as bullet trains in China.

When reached for comment on Thursday, the Transportation Department did not provide further details specific to Gardner’s resignation. A statement from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took aim at Amtrak’s Washington D.C. operations — calling on Amtrak’s leadership to “clean up Union Station” and “rid of our nation’s treasures of homelessness and crime.”

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Reuters&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-passenger-railroad-amtrak-ceo-abruptly-steps-down-2025-03-19/" target="_blank">reported</a>&nbsp;Wednesday that Gardner was asked to step down at the request of Trump, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-amtrak-7036ffa8c0c64118b9deed5a979d94e2">previously sought</a>&nbsp;to cut Amtrak’s budget in his first term.

When reached Thursday, Amtrak declined to comment on whether Gardner was asked to resign. But in Wednesday’s announcement, the Amtrak board stated that it looked forward to “working with President Trump and Secretary Duffy as we build the world-class passenger rail system this country deserves.”

Gardner first got his start with Amtrak as an intern back in the 90s. He later returned and worked at the rail service for the past 16 years, holding the title of CEO since January 2022.

Amtrak struggled during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — with the railroad seeing plummeting ridership as people across the country stopped traveling and stayed home. But passenger numbers have recently rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.

For the 2024 fiscal year, Amtrak reported an all-time&nbsp;<a href="https://media.amtrak.com/2024/12/amtrak-sets-all-time-ridership-record-in-fiscal-year-2024/" target="_blank">ridership record</a>&nbsp;of 32.8 million customer trips. That’s up 15% from 2023 — and surpasses Amtrak’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-lifestyle-health-business-coronavirus-pandemic-d924a925609b179dfc6ec5e7f4f02e16">previous record</a>&nbsp;of 32.4 million passengers in 2019.

Ticket revenue for the 2024 fiscal year totaled $2.5 billion, a 9% jump from 2023. And Amtrak posted an adjusted operated loss of $705.2 million, also a 9% improvement year-over-year.

Cover Crop Meeting to be held in Kingman on April 2

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University and the Kansas Forest Service have announced plans to build a $5 million shared facility to boost current efforts to provide critical training and equipment for firefighters and state-of-the-art instructional space for academic and regional workforce development programs.

The construction process will begin soon on the Kansas Rural Fire and Workforce Development Center, which will be shared by the state's forest service and K-State's department of communications and agricultural education.

The 13,268-square-foot facility will include: • A modernized shop for fire equipment. • A teaching lab for classes about emergency response, modern agricultural technology and mechanics. • A multipurpose classroom and lab for teaching and workforce training and development.

State Forester Jason Hartman said the new building will address "critical space limitations" faced by the Federal Excess Property Program, which acquires excess property from the Department of Defense and other federal sources, retrofits the equipment and then provides it on loan to local fire departments.

Jason Ellis, head of K-State's department of communications and agricultural education, said the facility also creates an applied learning space for faculty to train future teachers and provide continuing education for the state's 300-plus agricultural educators.

"This new facility will allow us to support our key stakeholders in the state by providing high-demand education, professional development and resources," Ellis said.

Ellis hailed the joint effort between the Kansas Forest Service and K-State's College of Agriculture, saying the building's dual program focus is built on the university's vision of becoming the nation's premier land-grant university, as it will be Kansas-centered and learner-focused.

Kansas State University received a $3.2 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for this project. Hartman added that the forest service's collaboration with the Flint Hills Regional Council was essential to helping secure funding for this project.

K-State, Kansas Forest Service building facility to support state's rural fire and agricultural education initiatives

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of West 16 Avenue on Wednesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Initial responding crews found a small fire in the attic space of a single-story home.&nbsp; Crews were able to make entry into the attic and extinguish the fire with no issues.&nbsp;

The home was occupied at the time of the call and the occupants were alerted of the issue by their smoke detectors.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Damage was contained to the attic and ceiling. The cause of the fire is under investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>HUTCHINSON FIRE DEPARTMENTThe Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of West 16 Avenue on Wednesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;Initial responding crews found a small fire in the attic space of a single-story home.&nbsp; Crews were able to make entry into the attic and extinguish the fire with no issues.&nbsp;The home was occupied at the time of the call and the occupants were alerted of the issue by their smoke detectors.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;Damage was contained to the attic and ceiling. The cause of the fire is under investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Adopt a Furry Friend: Britton

The Fertilizer Institute is happy with President Donald Trump for signing an Executive Order that continues his recognition for the importance of fertilizers to farmers.&nbsp; 

By signing the order, Canadian and Mexican imports of fertilizers will not be subject to any duty or tariffs.&nbsp; 

It will also deem that potash imports from Canada and Mexico will come with a reduced import tariff of 10% percent

🎧 BW Morning Show Interview: Max and Terry Bringle, World Down Syndrome Day 

Kelli Christ, a student at Hutchinson Community College, has been named a 2025 New Century Workforce Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

From Goessel, Kansas, and the daughter of Andrew Christ and Nanci Heath, Kelli is in the Associate Degree of Nursing program at Hutchinson Community College. In addition to her studies, she is co-President of the Kappa Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Secretary of the Honors Student Council, and a member of HANS - Hutchinson Association of Nursing Students. She also serves as a tutor for Anatomy and Physiology, General Microbiology, and Chemistry I. Furthermore, she recently presented her honors project research at the Great Plains Honors Council Regional Conference in Denton, Texas. Ms. Christ is on track to graduate with High Honors upon graduation.

“With strong critical thinking skills, great time management abilities, and a fantastic work ethic, Ms. Christ is a phenomenal leader both in and outside the classroom,” said Dr. Ryan Diehl, advisor of the Kappa Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the Honors Student Council. “Her innovative ideas have helped build our membership in both organizations while also building a community.”

The New Century Workforce Scholarship is the first of its kind to support students at associate degree-granting institutions on a national scale as they plan to enter the workforce upon completing a degree or certificate. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

New Century Workforce Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Nearly 2,100 students from more than 1,300 college campuses nationwide were nominated. Only one New Century Workforce Scholar was selected from each state.

“We congratulate Kelli for receiving this prestigious scholarship, and we are honored to partner with The Coca-Cola Foundation to recognize these outstanding achievements,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO, Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “Scholarship programs like this are integral for creating opportunities for students to succeed as they prepare to enter the workforce and for putting college completion within reach.”

The New Century Workforce Scholars will be recognized in the fall.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of Carpenter and South Main.

Around 1900, South Main Street businesses were just as busy and viable as those on North Main, if not more so.

Today's focus is on 928 S. Main. The earliest business I could find here was in 1909, when R.Y. Evans had a blacksmith shop here.

In 1913, my great grandfather, Virden Harmon, entered the picture. He had just moved here from Ness City and started working for the new owners, Albert and Frank Maltby, who were also blacksmiths. The first photo shows that group in 1913, in front of Carriage Works. Virden is second from the left.

Virden started collecting used furniture and stored it up on the second floor to later open Harmon Furniture on his own.

The second photo shows Carriage Works on the left in front of the Riverside Park Roller Coaster at the entrance of what is now Carey Park. The trolley car line had a turnaround at this point.

From 1930 to 1947, the McAdams brothers had an auto repair shop there.

In 1948, Theo Carson welding built the current structure.

From 1955 to 1961, it was Costello Motors used cars.

Wagoner Auto Repair then became the longest owner, from 1963 to 2016. The third photo shows the current business at 928 S. Main, Herl Fab &amp; Auto Repair, owned by Bryan Herl.
