Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of Carpenter and South Main.

Around 1900, South Main Street businesses were just as busy and viable as those on North Main, if not more so.

Today's focus is on 928 S. Main. The earliest business I could find here was in 1909, when R.Y. Evans had a blacksmith shop here.

In 1913, my great grandfather, Virden Harmon, entered the picture. He had just moved here from Ness City and started working for the new owners, Albert and Frank Maltby, who were also blacksmiths. The first photo shows that group in 1913, in front of Carriage Works. Virden is second from the left.

Virden started collecting used furniture and stored it up on the second floor to later open Harmon Furniture on his own.

The second photo shows Carriage Works on the left in front of the Riverside Park Roller Coaster at the entrance of what is now Carey Park. The trolley car line had a turnaround at this point.

From 1930 to 1947, the McAdams brothers had an auto repair shop there.

In 1948, Theo Carson welding built the current structure.

From 1955 to 1961, it was Costello Motors used cars.

Wagoner Auto Repair then became the longest owner, from 1963 to 2016. The third photo shows the current business at 928 S. Main, Herl Fab &amp; Auto Repair, owned by Bryan Herl.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Carriage Works - Vol. 114

KINGMAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Lincoln MKX driven by Ali Jo&nbsp;Soukup, 41, Great Bend, was northbound on East 160th Avenue one mile south of West 170th Avenue.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the SUV. The vehicle slid into the east ditch and struck a 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by Jessica Lynn&nbsp;Bendure, 39, Hoisington.

EMS transported Bendure to Clara Barton Hospital.&nbsp; Soukup and a passenger in the SUV were not injured. Bendure was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after SUV, car crash

KINGMAN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Peterbilt semi driven by John Robert Lane, 44, Wichita, was westbound on U.S. 54 one&nbsp;mile east of South West 170th Avenue.&nbsp; Strong winds caused the vehicle to tip onto it's driver side and slide into the median.

EMS transported Lane to&nbsp;Wesley Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after wind tips semi over

On Friday March 21, the Delos V. Smith Senior Center will be hosting an Alzheimer's Association fundraiser.&nbsp; This event is open to the public and you do not have to be a Senior to participate in this event.&nbsp;

 The theme of our fundraiser is "Game On For Alzheimer's".&nbsp; We will spend the day from 9:00 am-4:00 pm playing different&nbsp;card and/or board games, including Pitch, Rummikub, Mexican Train Dominoes, Mahjong, Wahoo and more. 

The suggested donation to participate&nbsp;in the games is $5.&nbsp; We will serve a Chili &amp; Potato Soup lunch along with Cinnamon Rolls for dessert, anyone can drop in for the lunch.&nbsp; Lunch will be served from 11:00 am-1:00 pm with a suggested donation of $5 for the lunch.&nbsp; 

We have an in honor or memory of bulletin board where anyone can donate for a loved one that has suffered or is suffering from Alzheimer's, these donations are $20 and we will list the names of those being honored on the bulletin board in the form of a special card and these names will also be posted in our April Calendar.&nbsp; 

We have shirts available for order at $20 each, proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Association.&nbsp; We will also have a box present to drop change or free will donations in.&nbsp; 

A representative from the Alzheimer's Association will visit during the day to help promote this event.&nbsp; Everyone is welcome and we can offer tours of our Senior Center during the day.&nbsp; 

This event should be a lot of fun and we look forward to the support from our community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Delos V. Smith Center to have fun fundraiser for Alzheimer's on Friday

The YMCA has reached their goal in the 2025 Strong Community Campaign.   

This campaign helps the Y support a lot of the programs they offer, one being the Splash program.  They offer the splash program for free, but they are able to offset those costs from money that they raise in the annual campaign.   

The campaign also helps with their other free community-based programs like Livestrong, Saturday Night at the Y, Will Power Hour and Splash.  

One of the questions that they get asked is how much of the money of the money leaves the community.  David Foster with the YMCA said that 100-percent of the funds raised stays here in Hutchinson.

The Hutchinson City Council met on Tuesday evening. &nbsp;

The council approved changes to the taxicab ordinance. &nbsp;

The council also passed resolution for a Commercial Facade Development Program. The program will encourage local businesses and property owners to enhance their properties. The program aims to reduce blight, improve building facades and increase the areas of appeal for residents, customers, tenants and prospective businesses.&nbsp;

Both items passed on a 3-0 vote. Commissioners Jon Richardson and Scott Meggers were not in attendance. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In another item on the agenda, the council discussed an agreement between the city and Interfaith Housing that would provide funding to Interfaith to acquire dilapidated residential properties with the goal of demolishing unsafe structures and transferring the cleared lots to the Hutchinson Land Bank for redevelopment.&nbsp;

Then next council meeting is on April 2. &nbsp;The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. &nbsp;

MANHATTAN — Middle school students are invited to Kansas State University's Manhattan campus for a special day of workshops with math faculty members and graduate and undergraduate students in celebration of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.math.ksu.edu/outreach/skday/">Sonia Kovalevsky Day</a>.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities through a series of workshops on math topics, including learning geometry through origami in the "Create any shape with a single slice" workshop and exploring applications of frieze patterns in dance and art in "Frieze patterns: symmetry in motion."

K-State's mathematics department and its Graduate Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics will host Sonia Kovalevsky Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.math.ksu.edu/outreach/skday/2025/schedule.html">Cardwell Hall</a>.

The free event is open to all area students in grades 6-8, and lunch is included.

Kovalevsky was a 19th-century mathematician, advocate for women's rights and pioneer for female mathematicians around the world. To honor her memory, the event aims to increase girls' interest in mathematics, assist them in the transition to high school math and encourage their pursuit of STEM disciplines. The event is open to all middle schoolers.

The Hutchinson Fire Department held is annual award ceremony on March 15. In front of an audience of 160, the following members were celebrated for achievements, incidents, and going above and beyond.

Yearly, the fire department members nominate firefighters that have gone above and beyond the call of duty.&nbsp;

Hutch Fire announces 2024 award winners 

MANHATTAN, Kansas — Governor Laura Kelly has declared March 19 as Kansas Agriculture Trade Day, in recognition of the enormous contribution agriculture trade makes to the state’s economy, farmers, and communities. Kansas Agriculture Trade Day honors Kansas’ farmers, ranchers, and related agricultural businesses and the role they play in feeding the globe.

Kansas’ agricultural producers are among the most productive in the world and play a vital role in food security both here and abroad. Agriculture is a central driver of the Kansas economy, with the state ranking among the top producers of sorghum, wheat and beef cattle.

Governor Kelly described the unique contribution that international trade in agriculture plays in the state in the text of the declaration, noting that "Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses contribute to international trade through innovation, sustainability and commitment to high quality agricultural products.”

Kansas exported over $4.75 billion in agricultural products to 94 countries in 2024, ranking 8th in the U.S. for agricultural exports. The top destinations for Kansas exports are Mexico, Japan, China, Canada and South Korea.

HARVEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Tuesday in Harvey County.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Lexus ES driven by Jennifer Michelle&nbsp;Crispin, 29, Valley Center, was&nbsp;southbound on Interstate 135&nbsp; just south of Southeast 36th Street.&nbsp; The car traveled onto the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and and the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway into the grass median and overturned.

EMS transported&nbsp;Crispin to Wesley Medical Center. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after car overturns

RENO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before noon Tuesday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2025 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Dung N.&nbsp;Tran, 57, Garland, Texas, was northbound on Kansas 14 at Maple Grove Road.

The semi traveled off the roadway to the right and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle crossed the center line and traveled off the roadway to the left. The driver overcorrected again and the semi crossed the center line, overturned, and came to rest in the field on the east side of the highway.

EMS transported Tran to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after semi overturns

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on Tuesday released their preliminary report on the incident that led to the gas line explosion and fire on Feb. 22. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In the first portion of the report, the NTSB states that an underline gas leak resulted in a commercial building explosion which destroyed the building and caused an evacuation of the surrounding community. &nbsp;&nbsp;

No injuries or deaths occurred and the NTSB states that the damages are to be approximately $975,000. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The report states that the Reno County dispatch received a gas odor report from the public at approximately 9:26 a.m., and that Hutchinson Fire Department arrived on the scene approximately seven minutes later at 9:33 a.m. &nbsp;

After the explosion ONE Gas, the parent company of Kansas Gas Service, excavated the area exposing approximately 120-feet of the ten-inch steel gas main. &nbsp;During the excavation, a leak was found at a girth weld, which is where two gas pipes are welded along their circumference. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The NTSB while on scene conducted a visual examination of the pipeline, collected physical evidence and conducted interviews. &nbsp;A portion of the gas line was later transported to the NTSB Materials Laboratory in Washington DC for evaluation and testing. &nbsp;&nbsp;Currently the investigation by the NTSB is ongoing. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The report says that future investigative activity will focus on previous failures and the leak history of the pipeline as well as aspects o ONE Gas’s integrity management program and state regulatory oversite; ONE Gas emergency response training and ONE Gas’s leak response, safety management system program and isolation planning tool. &nbsp;

NTSB releases preliminary report on gas explosion and fire 

MARC JACOBS Hutchinson police chief Bryce Burley and Reno County Sheriff Darren Campbell stopped by the BW morning show on Tuesday. We took the opportunity to ask to them about driving safety and asked them about motorcycle safety following the fatal accident on Monday morning.&nbsp;

Chief Burie talked about safety from the motorcycle operators' side. &nbsp;

“I would like to say, you know, if you're a motorcycle rider, I highly recommend wearing helmets. Helmets can greatly improve your chances of survival if you are involved in an accident, if you're over the age 18, that's obviously a choice that you get to make, but it's one that you should really consider,” said Burlie. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Burlie did note the vehicle drivers need to be aware of their surroundings.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Secondly, like you said, not only motorcycle riders, but bicyclists, pedestrians are out a lot more so if you're operating your vehicle around town. Majority of our accidents are caused by inattentive driving."

“Whether that's looking down in a stereo, fumbling with something in your car, a cell phone is obviously a big one. Now just try to remember when you're driving your car, you got a big responsibility out there, not only for your own life and for your own car, but for other people that are out so being vigilant when you're driving and paying attention as you do drive along is huge for everybody in the city” Burlie added.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Sheriff Campbell noted that it's basically the same out in the county.

 “There are more factors involved as far as traffic safety and motorcycles in the in the in the county, of course, it's a lot higher, speeds, faster. So, if there, if there is an incident, it's just more it's going to be critical.” said Campbell.&nbsp;

“Absolutely wear your PPE personal protective equipment. Never assume that that that everybody can see you, so remain visible." he continued.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Campbell also advised that all drivers need to be aware. 

“Make sure you're scanning, because we get a lot of deer accidents, whether in motorcycle, cars or whatever, the animals are always moving, especially around water sources when it's times like this, that's where the animals could be prevalent." Sheriff Campbell added.&nbsp;

AG Minute:  National Ag Day

The Hutchinson City Council will meet this evening in a regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall. 

On the council's agenda is an ordinance that will make changes to taxicab regulations in the city of Hutchinson.

 The council will also consider a resolution for a commercial facade Development Program. The program will encourage local businesses and property owners to enhance their properties. The program aims to reduce blight, improve building facades and increase the areas of appeal for residents, customers, tenants and prospective businesses. 

In another item on the agenda, Also, the council will look to approve an agreement between the city and Interfaith Housing that would provide funding to Interfaith to acquire dilapidated residential properties with the goal of demolishing unsafe structures and transferring the cleared lots to the Hutchinson Land Bank for redevelopment. 

The Hutchinson City Council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the commission chambers at City Hall.&nbsp;

The council will also consider a resolution for a commercial facade Development Program. The program will encourage local businesses and property owners to enhance their properties. The program aims to reduce blight, improve building facades and increase the areas of appeal for residents, customers, tenants and prospective businesses. In another item on the agenda, Also, the council will look to approve an agreement between the city and Interfaith Housing that would provide funding to Interfaith to acquire dilapidated residential properties with the goal of demolishing unsafe structures and transferring the cleared lots to the Hutchinson Land Bank for redevelopment. Hutchinson Police, Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno County EMS&nbsp;responded to a two-vehicle accident at 25 Street and Monroe Street. &nbsp;This occurred shortly before 10:45 a.m. Monday.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

First arriving emergency personnel found a motorcycle operator, identified as Joseph L. Kelly of Hutchinson, unresponsive. Officers on the scene said that Kelly was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.&nbsp;

It was determined Mr. Kelly was heading North on Monroe Street and had struck a passenger vehicle, operated by Doris L. Sloup of Hutchinson, who was heading East on 25th Ave. Ms. Sloup had no reports of injuries.&nbsp;

This is an ongoing investigation by the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit and anyone with information to the crash can call Traffic Officers L. Hammond or J. Gilmore at (620) 694-2854

Lacey Mills and Carla Stansfield of the United Way of Reno County stopped by the BW Morning Show on Tuesday to talk about the Hub project that will be at the Hutchinson Public Library on March 18. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hub Project is where the community can connect with resources in the community &nbsp;

“We've held a couple of these over the last several months, where we bring in partners in the community surrounding a certain topic, and folks who have a need or an interest in learning more about what's available in regards to that topic can come and kind of do what we think of a one stop shop.” said Stansfield &nbsp;&nbsp;

She continued to say, “You know, instead of going to four or five different nonprofits or making four or five different phone calls, you're able to do all of that in one space, in one moment, and meet some needs.”&nbsp;

United Way to host Hub Project on home buying and repair on Tuesday 

The Hutchinson Soroptimist Club is sponsoring their annual Women's Show and Health Fair this Saturday at the Meadowlark building on the State Fairgrounds. Jane Holzrichter, the president of the Hutchinson Soroptimist Club for 2025 gave us a few details on the event. &nbsp;

“We consider this a fundraiser, but it's really a service award to the community, or a service program to the community, and we have been having the women's show for many years” said Holzrichter. “I'm not even for sure what year we're on at this point, but many years and we have, we have usually in attendance at first to 1000 that come through our doors, and we're real excited this year. We have over 95 booths for the Women's Show and over 60 booths for the Health Fair.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;Holzrichter&nbsp;told us what to expect at the Women's show. “Yes, we have a lot of vendors that will come in with their cosmetics, jewelry, clothing, garden, cabinetry is going to be there. We have different foods that will be there to sample.”&nbsp;

Holzrichter stated that they have just a huge variety of vendors, if you think about it, it is probably a booth somewhere within the women's show&nbsp;

They will also have oral cancer screenings. Plus, they are going to have eyeglass cleanings with our vision department. If you know you have some grubby glasses and you want to clean up, they can do that for you. &nbsp;

A guardrail replacement project in Rice County on U.S. 56 will start around March 31, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Installation work will take place at two bridge locations about one-quarter mile apart on U.S. 56 – the first is between 10th&nbsp;Road and 11th&nbsp;Road and the second is just east of 11th&nbsp;Road.

The project is expected to last until around the end of May, weather permitting.

During the work, traffic will be guided with a temporary signal. Motorists should be prepared to slow down in the construction zone and traffic will be reduced to a single lane.

L &amp; M Contractors Inc., of Great Bend, is the primary contractor for the $568,000 project.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones.
