The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for extreme grassland fire danger across much of central and south-central Kansas, including Reno County, effective from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.
The warning replaces an earlier Fire Weather Watch and reflects increasingly dangerous fire conditions expected throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service, northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph are forecast, with gusts reaching between 50 and 60 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 22 percent, creating an environment where any fires that start could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.
Officials warn that the combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures significantly increases the potential for extreme fire behavior, particularly in grassland areas.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and take precautions with equipment that could spark a fire. Fire departments and emergency management officials are advised to remain alert and prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
The Red Flag Warning includes the following counties in the Hutch post area:
- Reno
- Rice
- McPherson
- Marion
- Harvey
- Sedgwick
- Kingman
- Pratt
Anyone who sees a fire or smoke is encouraged to report it immediately to local authorities.
