HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Michaela Schommer with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter said the need for adoptions of both dogs and cats never stops, and EAGLE Media is helping again by hosting an Adopt-A-Pet event Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at 825 North Main.

"The shelter is never empty, unfortunately," Schommer said. "For every outgoing animal there's probably two or three coming in."

The plan is to have as many pets out at the event as they can, but that's dependent on how many people volunteer to help.

"We always aim to bring about 10 to 12," Schommer said. "It is dependent upon how many volunteers are out here just to help manage all those animals and right now I need about eight more volunteers so if you're already registered and have assisted at an adoption event or at the shelter before please respond to my email."

There also will be a special deal that day for adoptions.

"For Saturday's event, we are doing a slightly reduced rate," Schommer said. "All dogs will just be $100 and all cats at the shelter are $25 for the day."&nbsp;

Adopt-A-Pet coming up Saturday

RENO COUNTY — Two people were arrested following a Wednesday chase in Reno County. 

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, they were informed that a victim of a previous theft had spotted the suspect in Pretty Prairie. 

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and found Brian Palmer and Krystal Estes leaving a residence. The pair were in a brown Chevy truck with a flat bed. Deputies attempted to stop the truck, but it fled the area. After a lengthy chase, the brown Chevy came to a stop and both Brian and Krystal attempted to flee the area on foot. Neither were successful and were apprehended. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the truck had been stolen in Stafford County. 

Estes was arrested for possession of the stolen truck and interference.

Palmer was arrested for flee and elude, possession of the truck, possession of meth, criminal damage and several out of county warrants. In addition, Palmer was also arrested for several other crimes that occurred over the last several months. These charges include 2 burglaries, felony theft and trespassing. These investigations are ongoing.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of Blanchard Avenue and Main Street in South Hutchinson.

In 1949, Joe Davenport purchased a 40-acre tract of land on this southwest corner. Later, he sold part of the land to construct the South Hutch Drive-In Theatre and another part was donated for the Lionette Softball Fields.

A large round-top was constructed and Ferguson Tractors started business there at 27 S. Main in 1950. The first photo shows that venture at opening.

However, Ferguson didn't last long at that location. In 1953, the round-top was converted to the Davenport Consignment Barn with Joe and his father, Charles, being the auctioneers. The second photo shows one of the first auction days in 1953.

This enterprise went on for decades, even after being sold to family members, Leon and Annie Moeder, in 1988. The auction barn ended in 1998 and the round-top was sold to Larry Doskocil. The third photo shows the round-top today, but it has been readdressed as 20 W. Ave. A, South Hutchinson, and is now owned by Troy Jacques.

CCS, Superior Boiler to partner on child care facility

MCPHERSON COUNTY —The McPherson County Board of Public Utility crews are working to restore power following a storm that saw 70-80 mile per hour winds come to south central Kansas Wednesday night.

 All available utility crews were dispatched. Officials estimated approximately 600 outages as a result of the storm. There were no injuries reported, according to the McPherson County Sheriff's office.

Residents who live within city limits on the south side of McPherson had their power restored overnight. Rural customers that live southwest of the city limits can expect an extended outage. Some may see an outage of 12-24 hours.

The sheriff's office asked the public to avoid the area around 22nd Avenue between Eisenhower Road and Dakota Road as multiple power lines were down, there was damage to residential structures and emergency crews working in the area.

The Board of Public Utilities reported there are approximately 2 miles of power lines down on the circuit that feeds this section of the system. 

Also, do not assume the Board of Public Utilities knows about your outage. If you lose power call their 24 hour outage number 620-504-7300 to report the outage. Thank you for your patience.

Summer storm left widespread damage in McPherson Co.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —&nbsp;A large, old, landmark cottonwood tree along K-96 in western Sedgwick County – known by many as The Lucky Tree – sustained damage recently.

Citizens reached out to the Kansas Department of Transportation to inquire about the damage because the tree is on KDOT right of way. The tree is on the eastbound side of K-96 between the Bentley exit and the Maize Road exit.

KDOT has been approached by a group of citizens on Facebook devoted to the tree -- wanting to inspect the damage for possible treatment. For safety reasons, KDOT is asking the group to seek a permit for entering the right of way to inspect the tree. A permit provides safety guidance.

A KDOT crew member noticed that it appeared that some of the tree’s bark had been skinned off.

For the safety of all motorists, KDOT discourages motorists from unnecessarily&nbsp;slowing down or pulling over near the tree.

The new building was purchased last year and remodeled to accommodate the needs of PreK-12 virtual students, 7-12 alternative students and adult learners.

A public open house will be held at a later date.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by&nbsp;Janae M.&nbsp;Moon-Sotta, 29, Caney, was northbound on Interstate 35 just north of NW 48th Street.

The car rear-ended a 2012 Nissan Altima driven by Theron T.&nbsp;Ratzlaff, 37, Moundridge.&nbsp; EMS transported&nbsp;Moon-Sotta to Wesley Medical Center. Ratzlaff and a passenger were not injured. Moon-Sotta was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

RENO COUNTY— The Kansas Highway Patrol has released the names of the Reno County Public Works employees involved in an accident on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 EZ Liner Truck driven by 25-year-old Melvin Joseph&nbsp;Hoyle of South Hutchinson was eastbound on Pretty Prairie Road just east of High Point Road, when the truck traveled off of the roadway to the right. The driver overcorrected and re-entered the roadway.&nbsp; The driver overcorrected again and the truck traveled off the road just East of High Point Road. 

The truck began to re-enter the roadway again and rolled.&nbsp;

A passenger David Brian&nbsp;Serviss, 49 of Arlington, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Hutchinson Funeral Chapel. 

EMS transported Hoyle to&nbsp;Ascension Via Christi St. Francis. EMS transported passenger Casey Alan&nbsp;Pattinson, 35, Buhler, to Wesley Medical Center and passenger Dale DeLane Baker, 28, Buhler, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On July 3rd, 2024, a burglary occurred at Whispers Video, 314 North Plum Street. Three additional burglaries at Whispers Video were committed since then. Arrest made in burglaries 

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Newton City Commission approved plans for the reconstruction of South Spencer Road between East First and Southeast 14th Streets.

Spencer was constructed about 25 years ago. During the construction of the First and Broadway interchanges on I-135, highway traffic through Newton was detoured onto Spencer, so the Kansas Department of Transportation provided most of the funding for Spencer’s construction. The concrete pavement has not held up well to traffic, especially at the joints where cracking and spalling are evident.

City Street staff have been patching the road constantly in recent years, and many area residents and businesses have expressed concerns about the condition of the road.

The project will be built in three phases, starting with the section from East First to Southeast Third Street this fall and the other two phases next spring. Each phase will take 6-8 weeks to complete. Traffic will remain open during construction for southbound traffic only.

Total cost of the project is estimated at about $3.6 million. The City plans to use $300,000 in federal fund exchange dollars toward the project and bond the remaining cost.

An open house is planned for 5-6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at City Hall for affected residents and businesses to ask questions about the project and learn more.

The Commission set a bid date of 11 a.m. Sept. 17.

"The city's proposal is not to conflict with private enterprise," said Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas. "It's the opposite. We are trying to attract private enterprise here. Because something's wrong, I think we can all look at that, or at a minimum, we're stuck. If we can say, we'll just do this one time and perhaps the market fixes itself, that's a win. If we need to do this maybe two or three times and then eventually we've jump-started the economy enough that builders and developers just kind of run from there, that's great. The tax base grows, it's kind of a mutual win for all of us."

The money will come from already set aside&nbsp;economic development funds. The first grant will be for $35,000 to start the process at the land the city bought near 11th and Hendricks, with another $250,000 encumbered to be spent once the city has engaged a developer and more details on the specifics of the land use can be known.

The intent of the commission is that other cities in the county will follow Hutchinson's lead.

"This is for the entire county to benefit and participate from," Villegas said. "If they want to see how we're doing this, the RFP process that we structured and put together and any agreements used, I would be an open book. Here's exactly how we did it, if you want to copy it, or make it your own and kind of right size it, but it's kind of to everyone's benefit, whether they are going to build in Yoder or wherever."

The vote on both motions was 3-2 with commissioners Hirst, Friesen and Parks voting in favor and commissioners Whitesel and Bogner voting against the policy generally and Hutchinson's initial proposal specifically.

YMCA open house coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain said Wednesday in an email to Hutch Post that the investigation is not done into last week's fire at 2404 East 4th.

"The cause of the fire remains undetermined, which is to say information is still being gathered and looked at," Cain said. 

A man identified on Facebook as Floyd Scott is offering a reward for information connected with the cause, which he believes to be intentional.&nbsp;

"I know I take phone calls from Floyd, the owner, multiple times a day," Cain said. "One of the phone calls was about a reward. He has been convinced it is 'arson' from the moment he got the call. I told him he can certainly offer anything he would like in order to get information, and maybe in his friends circle it will be effective."

Cain said they have not released information to the owner on any potential cause.

"You need to have your your total focus on the road, obviously, with kids walking to school, biking to school, buses out and about," Steward said. "It's essential for drivers to stay focused on the road and be extra cautious. So put your phone down. Don't be looking at your phone while you're heading to take your kids to school or headed into the school zone."

On the way home is when kids really aren't paying attention.

"Nearly one fifth of traffic fatalities of children below the age of 15 or school age pedestrians are killed between the hours of three and four p.m. than any other time of day," Steward said. "So that just reiterates the importance of staying focused, not only that after school period, but also before school."

In addition, slow down in school zones, so that if something does happen, everyone is safer.

"Triple A Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted some research and found that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling twenty five miles per hour is nearly two thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle going thirty five miles an hour," Steward said. "That 10 mile an hour reduction can can play a huge difference for somebody who happens to be struck by a vehicle."

Give yourself extra time to get where you are going for the first couple of weeks, so that new drivers and parents new to the school buildings can find their way.

Four international students looking for housing in Hutch

INMAN, Kan. — Sunday, Aug. 25 at the field next to Zoar Mennonite Brethren Church, there will be a community wide corn hole tournament and tailgate hosted by the Inman FFA.

Losing statehouse candidate leading class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College and the Hutchinson Police Department will be conducting a training exercise on campus Wednesday afternoon, August 14. There will be a large police presence on campus as a result of the exercise.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Festival of Remembrance to benefit Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County is Friday night at Prairie Dunes. 

"Our community is very blessed to have Hospice House, which is a home for end of life services," said Darla Wilson with Hospice. "It is very uncommon in the state or the nation to have one of those, especially in a community our size. Most people that are not in their own homes or in a nursing home, they don't have that opportunity. They are served in a hospital. If you have ever been in the Hospice House, it is very different than the care that you get in a hospital at end of life. That warmth and the feeling of being home and the family being comfortable. It's just something that this community is very blessed to have."

There were still a few single tickets available for the event.&nbsp;

"The one thing that you lose when you are faced with a terminal illness is control," Wilson said. "We want to give that family and that patient as much control as they can have. So what do they want? Where do they want to live their final days and hours? Some people will come to hospice house back and forth as they need to for respite or whatnot, but some people definitely want to be at home and they have the support to do that with us coming in and having that added layer. It works for them. So wherever they want to be, we want them to make those choices."

Festival of Remembrance coming up Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will consider its next steps on the Atrium Hotel property at its meeting August 20.

"A lot of the options after the governing body hears all of the facts presented to them from city staff, in addition to any plans or facts that are provided from the property owner, after all that being said, the major option would be to demo the facility," said Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas. "That would be the recommendation of staff at this point."

Mayor Greg Fast is on board with that idea.

"I'm not going to speak for the other four, but I will speak for myself," Fast said. "Yes, we are tired of looking at that place. Quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing from people about it because they have legitimate concerns and we need to take care of it."

It's possible the city could give the property owner some short period to demo the facility himself and if it is not done by then, then the city would finish up condemnation procedures to do it anyway.

Atrium Hotel will be on City Council agenda next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A line of overnight thunderstorms early Tuesday morning brought some beneficial rain to the Hutchinson area.

At the Eagle Media studios, we received 1.5 inches of rain. 

During the height of the storm, there was some street flooding on Main Street north of the studios in the usual spots. Also, the westbound traffic light at 30th and Main was out for a brief time, as well.&nbsp;

Under 300 people were without power as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.
