South Hutchinson, Kansas: Mennonite Friendship Communities announced today a renovation project with Ward Davis Builders. Renovation begins April 2025 and will be completed mid-summer.

“Ward Davis Builders are pleased to partner with MFC on this renovation. The South entrance may now merely be an employee entrance, but it is the first-place people see when they drive into MFC. The project will run about four months. There will be some design work and a few special-order items, so we will start mid-to-late April.” (Ward Davis)

Updated Structure – This entrance has been in place for nearly 50 years and shows an incredible amount of wear. The support columns and framework have experienced significant moisture damage, peeling paint, warping, and cracking, leading to a poor first impression.

Modern Appearance – This entryway is one of the most important features of our MFC Healthcare location and is the first thing that our residents and families see when they arrive on campus. In addition to functional improvements (lighting, flooring, improved flow), this updated space sets the tone for the great care that happens within.

Energy Efficiency – This renovation offers significant benefits with the updated structure, window treatments, and lighting, leading to lower utility bills and long-term cost savings.

The U.S. has almost doubled egg imports from Brazil and is considering relaxing regulations for eggs laid by chickens raised for meat. 

The Trump Administration is doing what it can to lower record egg prices, that is being caused by avian influenza.  Therefore, the U.S. has almost doubled egg imports from Brazil and is thinking about relaxing regulations for eggs laid by chickens that are raised for meat. 

 There could be more imports from other countries as well, and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins has said they’re talking about importing hundreds of millions of eggs in the short term.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State University researchers Eduard Akhunov and Bimal Paul have been selected as 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows in recognition of their significant contributions to their fields.

Akhunov — university distinguished professor of plant pathology and Bikram S. Gill Chair in Wheat Genetics — was cited in his selection "for development and use of resources for understanding wheat genome diversity and evolution, and for identification of novel genes for wheat improvement, including combating the important wheat stem rust pathogen."

"I feel deeply honored to be selected as an AAAS Fellow," said Akhunov, who is also director of K-State's Wheat Genetics Resource Center. "I am grateful that the tremendous work carried out by my former and current research team members, as well as our collaborators, is being recognized by our peers."

Paul, professor of geography and a Fulbright-Flex Senior Fellow, was recognized "for distinguished contributions to the field of human geography, particularly human adjustment to natural hazards."

"I've dreamed of being selected as an AAAS Fellow ever since I arrived at K-State in 1990," Paul said. "Through both theoretical and empirical research, I have contributed to my field by integrating social sciences and humanities with the physical sciences to address environmental concerns effectively and holistically, including various dimensions of nature-society interactions."

Elected each year by the AAAS Council, new fellows receive a certificate and a blue-and-gold rosette pin at the association's annual Fellows Forum, held this year in June in Washington, D.C.

As new inductees into the world's largest general scientific society, Akhunov and Paul join a distinguished cohort of scientists, engineers and innovators, including 26 current and emeritus K-State faculty.

"Being named a 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science is a well-deserved recognition of the groundbreaking contributions Drs. Akhunov and and Paul have made in their fields," said Hans Coetzee, interim vice president for research. "Their dedication to discovery and innovation continues to shape the future of science and society, and we are proud to have them at K-State."

Akhunov is one of the world’s top experts in wheat genetics, leading research that combines cutting-edge technologies with data science to leverage diversity of the wild ancestors of wheat to improve this important crop.

His team of researchers at the Wheat Genetics Resource Center — which maintains nearly 4,000 specimens from 38 wild wheat species — uses techniques such as genomics, bioinformatics and digital imaging technologies to uncover genetic traits in ancient grains that enhance grain quality, pathogen resistance and resilience to drought and heat stress.

"Our work is helping to reintroduce these traits from wild ancestors into modern breeding programs, accelerating the development of improved wheat varieties," Akhunov said.

Akhunov began his study of genetics and the diversity of wheat and its wild relatives as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Davis, where he joined a research team that began developing the first high-density maps of wheat genes and novel tools for characterizing genetic diversity in wheat. That work played a critical role in sequencing the wheat genome, particularly in identifying and characterizing genes that protect wheat against pathogens, increase yield and improve grain quality.

Since he arrived at K-State in 2007, Akhunov has advised more than two dozen graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. He has led nearly $40 million in funded research with support from the wheat industry and organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the USDA Agricultural Research Service,  the National Science Foundation, the Kansas Wheat Commission, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Paul is a world-leading scholar on disasters, hazards and health. He is known for offering deeper understandings of complex issues and debunking long-held myths relating to disaster response and recovery, both inside and outside of academia.

"Globally, there are an average of around 6,800 natural disaster events recorded each year," Paul said. "These disasters kill thousands of people every year, with another 120 million people being directly affected. The international community annually spends $30 billion addressing these events. My research significantly decreases disaster damage by informing preparation work, encouraging adaptations and humanitarian assistance, reducing human suffering from disasters, and saving lives across the globe, including in Kansas."

Paul's interest in disasters began after Bangladesh experienced a Category 5-equivalent tropical cyclone in 1991 that killed nearly 140,000 people. With funding from the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Paul found a spark that guided him to study natural hazards, ultimately studying tornados and other natural disasters in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Tennessee.

His current work particularly focuses on the intersection of disasters and health, including diseases and illnesses after disaster events.

In addition to giving invited talks in various Asian countries, Paul has been an external reviewer on 23 dissertations at universities around the world. Paul is the author or co-author of various articles, book chapters and seven books, including "The Routledge Handbook of Disaster Response and Recovery" that was published in March.

 Two K-State professors receive one of US science's highest distinctions

 This good boy was found as a stray and we believe him to be around a year old.  Our guess is he is a German shepherd/Husky mix but we aren’t positive. 

 Kai does like a slow introduction to new dogs but has never been aggressive towards them and has made many doggy friends while at the shelter. 

 Kai LOVES to play fetch and would be in heaven with a human who would throw a ball for him all day.  Kai is very food motivated and smart and thus very easy to train. 

 He has not had a single accident while at the shelter either.  Kai loves all people but hasn’t been tested with cats yet.

Kansas wheat growers know that success starts with strong, resilient varieties. Few understand this better than Dr. Guorong Zhang, a wheat breeder at Kansas State University's Agricultural Research Center in Hays. In a recent episode of the Wheat’s On Your Mind podcast, Zhang discussed his breeding philosophy, career path, and the future of wheat development in Kansas.

Zhang’s journey began on a small farm in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, where his family farmed rice and jute on less than an acre. After studying at Zhejiang Agriculture University, he spent time in barley research before coming to the U.S. for a Ph.D. in plant breeding at North Dakota State. That experience led him through research roles in soybean and biofuel crops, and eventually to K-State in 2012, where he took over the Hays breeding program.

“At the beginning, yield was my main focus,” Zhang said. “Farmers need high-yielding varieties to be profitable. Over time, I added more objectives—disease resistance, drought tolerance, and quality.”

His program has produced widely adopted varieties including Joe, KS Dallas, and KS Bill Snyder. Named in honor of the Hall of Fame football coach, the Snyder variety gained attention for its strong yield potential and broad adaptability. Zhang continues refining its drought tolerance as part of ongoing improvements.

Kansas weather has created some of Zhang’s toughest hurdles. In 2021, a hailstorm destroyed up to 80% of his trial plots in Hays, setting the program back significantly. These experiences have reinforced his focus on resilience in both environmental and disease-related stress.

“We’re getting better data, faster,” Zhang said, referencing the integration of double haploid breeding and drone phenotyping into his program. “The goal is to develop varieties that can handle both environmental stress and disease pressure.”

Field testing takes place across eight locations in western Kansas, including five farmer-managed sites. These trials give Zhang’s team insight into how lines perform under real-world growing conditions. He values the feedback received during field days and uses it to refine breeding goals for future releases.

“The western Kansas variety has strong resistance to Triticum mosaic virus and wheat streak mosaic virus, as well as improved drought tolerance,” Zhang said of two new releases expected this year. “The central Kansas variety has exceptional yield potential and strong disease resistance.”

His breeding program also includes collaborative work with universities like Colorado State to tackle new threats like wheat stem sawfly. Together, they evaluate new lines and share research data to speed up resistance development for high-risk regions.

Even as technology and challenges evolve, Zhang stays grounded in the basics: better yield, better disease resistance, and better quality. “We want Kansas farmers to have access to the best possible wheat varieties,” he said.

The city of Hutchinson has closed a section of eastbound Avenue G for railroad crossing repairs due to damaged railroad pads.

Eastbound Avenue G is closed at the crossing between Commerce Street and Airport Road.

There is no timeline for repair to the crossing.&nbsp; We have reached out to the railroad for more information. We have not received a response to our inquiry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 2nd on the south side.

In all of Hutchinson's long history, the two structures that have always occupied the addresses of 15, 17 and 19 E. 2nd Ave. have always been establishments for lodging.

The first, built in 1888, was the New Howard House.

Then by 1893, it became the Brunswick Hotel. The first photo shows that about 1904.

In 1905, it became the Baldwin Hotel. The second photo shows that about 1922.

In 1937, the upper floor was relabeled the Midland Hotel, with the lower floor leased out to Salt City Federal Savings &amp; Loan and the Wade Patton Insurance Co. The third photo shows the businesses as they looked in 1939.

In 1946, The Bisonte Hotel closed and Hutch was limited in downtown amenities.

In January 1949, V.M. Wiley and Ray Dillon spearheaded the proposal of the Metropolitan Hotel Corp. to build a new downtown hotel and convention center. They sold stock for this venture and, in 1953, construction started. The fourth photo shows the hotel construction in 1953.

On Feb. 13, 1954, the Baker Hotel opened. The fifth photo shows the Baker Hotel in 1958.

After many ownership changes, such as the Hilton Inn, Key To America Inn and The Kansas Inn, it was shuttered in 1975.

The building was purchased in 1978 and converted to downtown apartments and renamed Plaza Towers. The seventh photo shows the 15-19 E. 2nd building today, still the Plaza Towers and owned by Mark and Phoebe Davenport out of Kansas City, Kansas.

Wiley and Ray Dillon spearheaded the proposal of the Metropolitan Hotel Corp. to build a new downtown hotel and convention center. They sold stock for this venture and, in 1953, construction started. The USD 308 Board of Education discussed the bond issue for building a facility for students in grades 6-8 during its meeting Monday night.

The bond election was delayed earlier this year due to issues with state funding, Superintendent Dawn Johnson said.

"Yeah, you know, we took a slight pause for that," Johnson said. "We were hoping to ask our community to vote on the large project we want to do, which is a building for grades six, seven and eight."

"Right now, we have a standalone seventh grade and a standalone eighth grade. I think it's going to be critical to create a more cohesive structure for our already great organization at USD 308, but we had to take a slight pause," she said. "The state has a cap on the amount of money it will apply toward bonds, and that cap was met by the time we made our decisions and reviewed the situation."

Johnson said the state has approved the bond issue, but the election must be held after July 1.

At Monday’s meeting, the board began considering a date for a special bond election.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) wants to remind utility customers that there are two important dates coming up that they should be aware of.  First, the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers, served by KCC regulated utilities, from disconnection when temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees.

In addition, Monday is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, known as LIEAP. Applications for the federally funded program must be received by the Kansas Department of Children and Families by 5 p.m. on Monday.  Information about the program is available at https://www.dcf.ks.gov/services/ees/Pages/EnergyAssistance.aspx

When the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, regulated utilities are required to offer a 12-month payment plan upon request, even if a previous payment plan has been broken. When that protection ends on Monday, failure to make arrangements or failure to adhere to an already established payment plan could result in disconnection. Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan.

The KCC urges all customers facing financial difficulties to act now to stay connected. To find out more about utility assistance programs in your area, please contact your utility or the KCC Consumer Protection Office at 800-662-0027 or 785-271-3140. Utility assistance program information is also posted on the KCC’s website.

It is important to note that the KCC does not regulate co-ops or municipal utilities, although many of those utilities also offer a cold weather payment plan. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Warmer days may lead many to itch for spring and summer, but a Kansas State University entomologist cautions against a small mite that is likely to give you a less-pleasing seasonal itch.

Chiggers are active beginning in April, says K-State’s Raymond Cloyd, and are usually found in areas with unmanaged vegetation, as well as parks, golf courses, sports fields and other grassy areas. The larvae attach themselves to humans, pets and other animals.

“Chiggers do not suck blood,” Cloyd said. “Rather, chiggers burrow and feed on dissolved skin. The larvae inject a saliva that causes the skin tissue to dissolve, and that is what the chigger larvae feed on.”

According to Cloyd, the larvae are difficult to see with the human eye. Humans often notice the presence of chiggers by a reddish-rash and itchy skin.

Cloyd cautions humans to resist the urge to scratch.

“You want to avoid scratching too often because you can promote a bacterial infection by opening wounds,” he said. “I’ve been bitten by chiggers many times, and I know it’s very tempting to scratch, but you don’t want to create a bigger problem.”

Cloyd said some topical ointments may help with the itch and a dermatologist may be able to provide recommendations.

Once attached, larvae feed for “a few days,” according to Cloyd, and then they fall off the host. The larvae become nymphs and then adults that reside in the soil. The nymphs and adults do not feed on humans or other animals. Instead, they feed on insects, mites, and their eggs in the soil.

The best advice, according to Cloyd, is to avoid getting bit in the first place.

“If you’re going to go into an area where chiggers are likely to be, use DEET or other repellants, and then when you come back inside, immediately take a shower to help reduce the itchiness caused by chiggers,” he said.

Chiggers are usually active from Spring (late April) until Fall, or until the first frost. The species of chiggers found in Kansas do not transmit disease, Cloyd said.

Ag Minute: Dairy farmers 

Dillons is hosting a Community Day meal packing event at the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Hutchinson to benefit the Food Bank of Reno County and our local neighbors in need.&nbsp;

The event will be held on Wednesday, March 26, beginning at 12 p.m. on the west side of the Sports Arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We will be packing 2,500 meals in the form of 500 family meal kits. The kit includes all the ingredients and recipe for a BBQ Chicken Bowl.&nbsp; Everything is shelf-stable and will be packed by volunteers into small boxes for distribution by the Food Bank of Reno County.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Basketball fans and volunteers are encouraged to visit the west entrance of the Hutchinson Sports Arena during the event to help pack a meal kit.&nbsp; Whether participants can give a little or a lot of time, together we can make a huge impact.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan – As egg prices continue to increase in grocery stores, Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said it might be beneficial to consider replacing eggs in certain recipes.

Blakeslee said the type of egg substitute to choose depends on the end product and the function it needs to provide. She cited information from her extension colleagues at the University of Illinois, who published various substitutes for recipes that require binding, leavening, moisture and other alternatives.

Blakeslee recommends using two ounces of extra-firm tofu to replace one boiled egg. If a recipe utilizes eggs to hold ingredients together, Blakeslee suggests using one tablespoon of chia seeds or ground flax seeds mixed with three tablespoons of water to replace one egg.

Another option, she said, is one package plain gelatin and two tablespoons of warm water to replace one egg.

“For leavening in baking, use the chia or flax seed mixture plus a half teaspoon of baking powder for each egg,” Blakeslee said. “For moistness in baking, use a quarter cup applesauce, mashed banana, pureed avocado, pureed garbanzo beans, or silken tofu for each egg. Another option is two tablespoons mayonnaise for each egg.”

According to the American Egg Board, shell eggs in the original carton can be stored in the refrigerator cabinet for 4-5 weeks beyond the pack date.

“This will likely go past the ‘sell by’ date on the carton, but they will be safe to use after that date as long as they have been refrigerated. This can help reduce food waste,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee also suggested freezing eggs for later use.

“Think about cutting back daily egg use to every other day to change up your routine and add variety,” Blakeslee said.

Growth Energy is thanking the EPA because the agency said it would reconsider the tailpipe emissions rule.&nbsp; 

That includes pickups by the way.&nbsp; Now Growth Energy had filed comments and an amicus brief that objected to the tailpipe emissions rule.&nbsp; 

The group believes that the benefits of biofuels are readily available right now to reduce emissions.

AG Minute:  EPA tailpipe emissions rule 

Cow Patty was a stray dog brought in by animal control and smelled like cow poop. It was believed he belonged to someone at an apartment complex, but no one came forward to claim him. Patty is 2 years old, and is believed to be an Irish Setter mix. Patty is 55 pounds of pure love, and thankfully, no longer smells like an actual cow patty. He is very treat motivated!”

Officer Shuck and Patty enjoyed walking around the duck ponds at Carey Park and looking at all the geese. Patty was very interested in the geese but did a good job staying on his leash and listening to Officer Shuck’s commands. Patty gets excited when he meets new people but quickly calms down so he can get chin scratches and hugs. Patty would be a great fit for anyone who needs a loveable family dog! 

On a side note: We recommend giving Patty an updated name, or just call him "Pat."

6-year-old Cameron Epp of Turon was killed in the accident that was just west of Turon on Sun City Road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pancake feed is held the Thursday morning of the NJCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament. &nbsp;Tickets for the event are $7 at the door or $6 if purchased in advance. Tickets for children 8-years-old and under are $3. &nbsp;

Doors open at 6:30 a.m. and will remain open until 11 a.m.&nbsp;

Breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Proceeds from the pancake feed help fund scholarships for students at HutchCC. &nbsp;&nbsp;

American Legion Scholarship Breakfast set for Thursday 

RENO COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Monday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Dodge Dakota driven by Preston Lee&nbsp;Lewis, 37, Hutchinson, was westbound on 17th Avenue a quarter mile East of Faubian Street.

The pickup crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2023 Buick Envision driven by Helen I.&nbsp;Blevins, 61, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Blevins was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Elliott Mortuary. EMS transported Lewis and a passenger in the SUV identified as Stephanie Paige&nbsp;Blevins, 29, Hutchinson, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Lewis was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The scholarship will be awarded based upon achievement in college, financial need, potential to make an impact on others and involvement in leadership and community service.

The scholarship is available for any Inman High School graduate who has completed five semesters of college and is working toward a degree in one of the above mentioned service related careers. The scholarship amount is $500 distributed $250 per semester for one year.

On Monday, the McPherson County Sheriff's office reported they were contacted on March 17 in reference to the death in the city of Moundridge, according to a media release.

&nbsp;Due to the active investigation and pending autopsy results, the sheriff's office released no additional details.
