LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College will conclude a year-long vocational reflection initiative funded by a $15,000 Professional Development Grant from the Council of Independent College's Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE). The culmination of this programming will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Mindy Makant, a distinguished professor and leader in vocational studies, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

Makant, a Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Youth and Family Ministry Program at Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina will address Bethany College faculty and staff during a workshop focused on the significance of vocational reflection and exploration within Lutheran higher education. The keynote will accompany roundtable discussions to further embed vocational discernment into the college's curricular and co-curricular offerings.

"Dr. Makant's extensive experience in vocational studies and her deep understanding of Lutheran educational values make her the ideal speaker to bring this important project to its conclusion," said Pastor Melissa Woeppel, Campus Pastor at Bethany College. "We are excited to have her on campus to inspire and challenge us as we continue to support our students in discovering and pursuing their callings."

Makant's expertise is well-documented through her work as the founding director of the Living Well Center for Vocation and Purpose at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She has authored two books, The Practice of Story: Suffering and the Possibilities of Redemption and Holy Mischief: In Honor of Women in Ministry (forthcoming). Additionally, she serves as an ordained deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a certified spiritual director, and a member of the ELCA's Task Force on the Social Statement on Church, Government, and Civic Participation.

This keynote presentation marks the final stage of the NetVUE-funded initiative, which began with a comprehensive effort to address barriers to vocational reflection and exploration faced by Bethany students. The initiative included book study groups, focus groups with crucial student constituencies, and the development of new pedagogical approaches to enhance the vocational development of all students. The feedback gathered throughout the year has informed curricular changes and programmatic adjustments that will benefit Bethany College students for years.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Michaela Schommer with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter noted that this is a time of year where they struggle to find homes for really young animals. 

"We are flooded right now with kittens," Schommer said.&nbsp; It is still kitten season, they are still being born, they are still coming in every day and we we are full in foster homes we could use more fosters but we need adopters."

In addition to kittens, there are also puppies that need homes being cared for by fosters right now. Really young animals need additional care.

"Kittens and puppies are, you know, they have to be at least eight weeks and typically at least two pounds before they could be spayed or neutered or available for a new home," Schommer said. "From birth to that eight to ten week mark they need to live somewhere, they need extra vaccinations and deworming and specialty foods for that age range and socialization."

It's also tough to keep young animals healthy in a shelter environment.&nbsp;

"An animal shelter can be a dangerous environment for puppies and kittens," Schommer said. "We have a lot of germs and diseases a lot of dogs from different backgrounds cats that come in with diseases in our care and when you're housing that many you need to keep them safe and isolated away from those germs and diseases, so the solution often is a foster home."

The fundraiser is at Dunkin Donuts at 1533 East 17th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The fundraiser is donation based.&nbsp;If you have some leftover change after getting your morning coffee or morning breakfast, the athletes would appreciate it

Dunkin has done this fundraiser for several years, this is the second time for the Hutchinson location.

"How things wind up in unclaimed property can sometimes be a mystery," Johnson said.&nbsp; "We are looking forward to a chance to focus on searching and seeing what we can find, and we've had a little bit of luck this week. We got excited for the KSU Foundation because there is a whole bunch, but there are like 20 properties each for $2.64. But it was a couple thousand and we had quite a bit for KU Med."

If you are part of a nonprofit, it's worth a look at&nbsp;<a href="https://unclaimedproperty.ks.gov/">https://unclaimedproperty.ks.gov/</a> to see if there is anything there.&nbsp;

"If somebody inquires, we'll give them a list of exactly what they need to send in and make sure that we can get through the process as neatly as possible," Johnson said.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 held a ribbon cutting for the new Ad Astra Academies located at 1800 East 23rd Ave. in Hutchinson on Friday.

The new building was purchased last year and remodeled to accommodate the needs of PreK-12 virtual students, 7-12 alternative students and adult learners.

"I said, 'I think there's going to be a real need for this coming out of COVID,'" Buhler USD 313 superintendent Cindy Couchman said.

Couchman gave a lot of credit to the school board for being so supportive during the process.

"I said I have no clue what it's going to look like, but they were so supportive," Couchman said. "They said 'if you feel like it's a need for kids, we want to meet whatever needs there are of kids to have' and that's how it started."

Couchman also said it was a rather easy process after that to get things going.

"Then we hired the right people," Couchman said. "Because that's what it's really about. You start a program and you hire the right people. Because it's about people in that program."

After the virtual school was decided upon, the school board went to Couchman and asked what else was needed.

"We said not only do we want to do a virtual school," Couchman said. "I think it would be great if we did an alternative school for some kids that are struggling with emotional needs, sometimes academic needs, sometimes they just need a different setting."

Couchman was very pleased with Landmark Architects of Hutchinson and Simpson Construction from Wichita for their work on the project.

"They hit every deadline," Couchman said. "It opened on time, we had kids here on Wednesday, so it was fantastic to see everyone here."

Ad Astra Academies ribbon cutting held

TOPEKA, Kan. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for Kansas Christy Davis announced Friday that USDA is funding three projects to increase the availability of domestic biofuels that will create new market opportunities and jobs for Kansas farmers.

Today’s announcement is part of a larger national announcement that includes 25 other states.

The Hutch Post area project is in Sedgwick. A $145,500 grant will help create infrastructure to expand the sales and use of renewable fuels through Basgall Investments LLC’s fueling stations. This project will install four E15 dispensers at a fueling station in Sedgwick. This project projects to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 374,400 gallons per year.

Mann opening service academy nomination process

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Faculty have returned which means the start of the fall semester at Hutchinson Community College is just around the corner. With classes starting August 21, campus has been busy with students getting enrolled and last-minute preparations.

Like many of its peers, HutchCC is currently experiencing a positive trend. “Hutchinson Community College was very fortunate throughout the pandemic and in the years following to maintain strong enrollment,” shared HutchCC President Dr. Tricia Paramore. “Community colleges, including HutchCC, have been able to capitalize on the rising costs of a college degree by expanding scholarship opportunities, continuing to grow our partnerships with high schools, and continuing to utilize technology to grow our online offerings.”

Specifically at Hutchinson, several programs are at capacity with the start of the semester still more than a week away. Added Dr. Paramore, “We’re experiencing very strong enrollment in many areas such as Automation Engineering Technology, Welding and several Allied Health programs – nursing, radiology, physical therapy assistant, surgical technology and respiratory therapy. In addition, we currently have over 200 students on the waiting list for our CDL program.” Enrollment is up overall. Even with HutchCC’s 34 high school partners, dual credit enrollment is up 31.6% since 2021 with enrollment for this fall still in progress.

Many Kansas community colleges have dorms that are already full before the semester even begins. Hutchinson Community College is no exception. “We are currently at full capacity”, stated Shelby Branting, Director of Resident Life and Student Activities. “Our waiting list is increasing daily so anyone who’s interested in the potential of on-campus housing is encouraged to contact us sooner rather than later.”

While dorms may have a waiting list, many opportunities still exist at HutchCC’s main campus, its centers in McPherson and Newton, and through the college’s robust online program. HutchCC to start next week, enrollment strong

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County was higher for the month of July 2024.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went up six tenths of a percent to 4.4%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2023 was 3.4%.

There were 1,285 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.2% in July. This is an increase from 3.0% in June and an increase from 2.6% in July 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 1,700 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs&nbsp;increased by 3,900 over the month, while government decreased by 5,600.

Since July 2023&nbsp;Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 21,100. This change is due to an increase of 22,800 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,700 government jobs.

Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards traveled across the state last school year trying to figure out what schools that increased their rate are doing right.&nbsp; 

"The common things that I tended to hear about, one is just what I said, a heavy stress on we monitor every child in high school for early warnings," Tallman said. "What many said is, we don't wait for the kid to be failing some classes or falling behind in credits. We're watching every week to see kind of how they're doing, so that's a big one. They say, we pay attention to a kid's status and when we see there's a problem of any kind, we talk with them immediately. We try to find out what's going on. We try to provide them other supports."

Helping kids see the relevance of school to the job market is another success point.&nbsp; 

"Many of these successful districts say a big part of it has been working harder to help kids see connections with what they want to do," Tallman said. "CTE programs, concurrent college courses. So you're getting a start on college or a technical college or a technical degree while you're in high school so you have a sense of where that is. Are kids connected in other ways? Do you have a lot of, do you have activities? Do you have sports? Do you have clubs? Do you have things that help students find a personal connection to someone, whether it's their peers, whether it's a teacher, whether it's a coach, something beyond just, again, kind of going through the classroom stuff so they feel a part of something."

That is one of the goals of a new graduation requirement for those entering as freshmen this year. It's a requirement for two 'post-secondary assets' to graduate high school.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"It's really saying we're going to show that you've done something beyond what's required in the classroom for credit," Tallman said. "I think the requirement is you're gonna have to have two of those. That might be earning a career tech credential of some kind or an industry certificate in an area that shows, you know, you've mastered a certain skill in a work, in an occupational area. It might be that you have demonstrated a high level of score on an ACT course or something like that. It might be that you're involved in a work learning program. State Board is still in the process of defining those."

The intent is to have students be connected to something outside of the traditional school day, and as Tallman's trips have shown, when that happens, kids are more likely to stay in school and eventually walk across the stage.

Tallman: Graduation rate increases are about connection to school

The district has been busy this summer with construction under the current bond issue that was approved in May of 2023. The bond issue was approved for just under 8 million dollars.

At the grade school, all projects will be completed by the first day of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Every window in the grade school building will be&nbsp;replaced with ventilated windows.The entire grade school building also received new carpet. Country Carpets finished the carpet installation on Sunday, Aug. 11.

The middle school and high school will also have new ventilated windows this school year.Every window covered up with plywood in the building, is where the ventilated windows will be placed.

The high school science room will also be updated before school starts. The gas lines which were previously capped, have been replaced. Concrete was laid in the room on Monday, Aug. 12 to cover the holes where the gas lines were replaced.The room floor will then be covered in tile. A new ventilation hood will round out the final updates for the science room.

In preparation for a new middle school gym, the entire north gym wall has been removed. New 20x100 foot beams will be brought in for the new building. Instead of a ground breaking ceremony,the district will host a beam raising for the gym sometime in the middle of September.

New ventilation and new electric is in progress right now in the agriculture shop behind the middle school and high school.

During the 2024-25 school year,the district will begin to look at designs for a new auditorium ceiling and secure entrances at each school with Landmark Architects.

The district currently has another construction project taking place atthe high school that is not a part of the current bond issue. That project is being funded out of capital outlay. The high school library has been moved to its original upstairs location where it was when the school was built in 1923. The library most recently occupied space on the first floor of the high school.That space will be turned into a commons area for students to gather before school and will provide a possible meeting space for school dances, board of education meetings and more.

Construction for the new commons area is slated to be completed by the end of September.

A new ventilation hood will round out the final updates for the science room.In preparation for a new middle school gym, the entire north gym wall has been removed. New 20x100 foot beams will be brought in for the new building. Instead of a ground breaking ceremony,the district will host a beam raising for the gym sometime in the middle of September.New ventilation and new electric is in progress right now in the agriculture shop behind the middle school and high school.During the 2024-25 school year,the district will begin to look at designs for a new auditorium ceiling and secure entrances at each school with Landmark Architects.The district currently has another construction project taking place atthe high school that is not a part of the current bond issue. That project is being funded out of capital outlay. The high school library has been moved to its original upstairs location where it was when the school was built in 1923. The library most recently occupied space on the first floor of the high school.That space will be turned into a commons area for students to gather before school and will provide a possible meeting space for school dances, board of education meetings and more.Construction for the new commons area is slated to be completed by the end of September.

Kansas Highway Patrol Lieutenant Rust stopped a vehicle going 101 mph in a 60 mph construction zone in Southern McPherson County on Thursday, according to a social media report from the patrol. The driver had no insurance, no current registration, and a warrant out for their arrest.

Lieutenant Rust made an arrest and transported the individual to jail. The speeding violation alone is $828.00, according to the KHP.

IdeaTek in Inc. 5000 again

TOPEKA, Kan. — A recently completed survey of parent perceptions of post-secondary op0ons and high-demand careers found significant changes since it was first conducted in 2019, including parents’ growing acceptance of their children pursuing skilled trade careers and alternatives to traditional four-year college.

“We found this year’s study confirmed some of the original findings — and that many perceptions have changed,” said Kristin Brighton, founder of HirePaths and an owner of New Boston Creative Group in Manhattan. “Between the pandemic, years of workforce shortages, and continued tuition increases at colleges and universities, many parents have become less convinced that their kids must invest the time and money to attend a four-year college or university to become successful adults.”

Completed in partnership between the HirePaths marketing campaign and the Kansas State Department of Education, a grantor to the campaign, the 2024 survey was disseminated to all Kansas school districts.

Districts were encouraged to send the survey to parents and guardians to complete regarding their oldest child 18 years of age or younger living in the home. In both 2019 and 2024, Kansas school districts had the choice to participate.

Survey data showed that the percentage of parents who hope their child will earn a bachelor’s degree someday dropped significantly to 62.1% from 74.2%. It also found that the percentage of parents who hope their child goes straight from high school to a bachelor’s degree program dropped by 10%, to 52.7% from 62.7%.

“I want to be clear: Our goal is not to push young people away from four-year college. HirePaths advocates for 40% of Kansas high school graduates to enroll in a four-year college or university. For those who want to earn a bachelor’s degree, HirePaths introduces them to high-demand, high-paying careers such as a civil engineer, physical therapist or accountant,” Brighton said. “If we want to keep Kansas kids here in Kansas, we must make sure they’re qualified for jobs our employers need to fill.”

The increasing cost of higher education and concerns about student debt also impacted parents’ perceptions. The percentage of respondents who report that the cost of higher education deters them from wanting their child to enter a four-year program right after high school grew to 34.1% from 26% five years ago. Approximately 72% of parents remain concerned about their child acquiring student debt (up slightly from 71% in 2019).

HirePaths also advocates for another 40% of Kansas high school graduates to earn some sort of postsecondary degree, credential or certification to show they have earned the skills for a professional career. The survey found that more than 75% of parents would be happy or very happy if their child went to a technical school, and nearly 60% of parents would be happy or very happy if their child pursued an apprenticeship.

“These options are inexpensive ways to launch many well-paying careers such as nursing, construction worker, plumber or cybersecurity analyst,” Brighton said. “The fact is, many students can learn valuable career skills and gain hands-on experience through these programs either for low or no cost — and those who choose to go the apprenticeship route get paid while they’re learning.”

Parent perceptions of 10 high-demand jobs were measured on the survey. Responses show perceptions have improved for many skilled labor jobs but have become less favorable for some careers that were affected by the pandemic, such as nurses, police officers and teachers.

Overall, one area that hadn’t changed much was whether parents felt their child needed to leave the state of Kansas after high school to be successful. Only about 10% of parents believe their child needs to leave the state, increasing slightly to 10.4% from 10.1%.

Brighton said this was the best news of the 2024 survey.

“Most parents believe Kansas offers opportunities for their kids. We must make sure the kids believe this too. HirePaths strives to illustrate the breadth of career opportunities waitung for them after graduatuon.”

HirePaths launched in 2021 with investments from some of Kansas’ largest employers and industries, including the Kansas Contractors Association, Textron Aviation, Stormont Vail Health, Spirit AeroSystems, Foley Equipment and Garmin. The campaign also has received two grants from federal ESSER II funds administered through the Kansas State Department of Education. Survey says parents are more OK with non-college options

Long, long ago in a land far, far away, bread wheat came into existence. Researchers are still unlocking the secrets of the wild relatives of that ancient wheat to improve modern-day varieties - and a collection of seeds housed on Kimball Avenue in Manhattan is key to this work.&nbsp;

Bikram Gill and John Raupp with K-State’s Wheat Genetics Resource Center sat down with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, on a recent episode of the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast to share wheat’s origin story and how the collection continues to provide valuable genetic resources for modern wheat breeding programs.&nbsp;

To understand this potential, one must go way back to the origin of wheat as a species in the Fertile Crescent - where the crop helped start human civilization more than 10,000 years ago. At that time, wheat did not yet exist. It would take two major evolutionary events that mixed three different grass species to make the first bread wheat genome.&nbsp;

The first stop on this timeline was the merger of two wild ancestors that resulted in the eventual creation of wild emmer wheat (genome formula AB).&nbsp;

“As a species in nature, nature produced bread wheat around half a million years ago,” Gill said. “Two grasses, they happened to have fun. They hybridized - and that produced bread wheat.”&nbsp;

The second stop on the timeline came more than 10,000 years ago when that wild emmer wheat was combined with an ancient goatgrass (genome formula D). That genetic mix resulted in the first crop cultivated by humankind.&nbsp;

“In some farmer’s field, some goat grass hybridized with emmer wheat, which originated in Syria,” Gill said. “And that farmer was smart enough, he selected that plant. And that’s our bread wheat.”&nbsp;

From there, Mother Nature kept mixing in wild wheat relatives to this new bread wheat - and farmers selected the most successful versions to plant again.&nbsp;

“After wheat originated, these wild wheats kept cross-hybridizing with domesticated wheat,” Gill said. “There were no breeders, but nature was doing breeding for the first 10,000 years. They were cross-pollinating and farmers were selecting new types out of that.”&nbsp;

This origin story is important because it explains why the wheat genome is so complex. Wheat is a hexaploid, meaning it has six sets of seven chromosomes. Most genes in wheat exist in three copies - one each from those A, B and D genomes. As a result, there are 16 billion DNA letters in the wheat genome - the human genome has three billion letters - meaning you could type out the genetic code of wheat in 12-point font and the type will go around the world.&nbsp;

This triplication and redundancy make wheat very hard to genetically analyze.&nbsp;

“It’s essentially three different genomes coexisting in one,” Gill said. “It’s like three married people living in one house. Each can be independent, so that causes the problem. How do you sleep in one room without messing it up? Wheat is a very elegant genetic system.”&nbsp;

While hard to pick through, that complexity also makes wheat a more durable crop.&nbsp;

“This is called genetic buffering,” Gill said. “It’s almost like there are three soldiers or three genes. So, one goes out, the second one is there. The second goes out, the third one is there. Wheat can tolerate the extremes of environment because of this buffering caused by the redundancy of the genes.”&nbsp;

With this understanding of the origin and complexity of wheat - how does that relate to wheat breeding programs? Fast forward to 1979 when Gill did a postdoctoral fellowship at K-State and was first exposed to the genetic stocks used to map genes and breed wheat. He took that experience with him to his second postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-Riverside, where he was blown away by the genetic diversity of a collection of wild weeds.&nbsp;

Gill started to form a vision of a resource that would combine the two - a collection of wild wheat relatives with unlocked genetic potential and a wheat breeding program that could replicate Mother Nature’s process of pulling in traits to make better varieties for farmers to plant.&nbsp;

In 1980, Gill wrote a grant and flew on a small plane to Hutchinson, the then-headquarters of the Kansas Wheat Commission to pitch his idea.&nbsp;

“They had never funded K-State until then,” Gill said. “I presented my vision - we want to establish the Wheat Genetics Resource Center because that’s where we’re going next. A yield bump is going to come from this because of that genetic diversity. Nobody knew what wild wheats were in the Great Plains at that time. I said I know that this is where the next big evolution is.”&nbsp;

Backed by approval from K-State’s wheat breeder at the time, the commissioners agreed to provide the seed money. Gill gathered an initial collection of 500 genetic lines, including seeds from collections in Japan, Israel, Russia and other countries. He immediately dove into early projects identifying Hessian fly resistance and leaf rust resistance in lines of Aegilops tauschii (Tausch's goatgrass), which was relatively easy to cross into wheat.&nbsp;

“We are just doing what happened in nature,” Gill said. “That’s how bread wheat arose, so we are essentially repeating the same process except we’re doing it in the lab.”&nbsp;

Raupp has served as the curator of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center since August 1980. He noted the collection is up to about 4,200 lines, ranging from Aegilops tauschii which grows anywhere from Turkey to western China to one species that is only found in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt and a little bit into Israel.&nbsp;

It’s his job to maintain the stocks of this genetic material, making sure scientists and breeders have access to the seeds they need to complete projects. That doesn’t mean these seeds only sit in a gigantic refrigerator. To maintain their integrity, the seeds must be planted, grown either in a greenhouse or an outdoor plot and often hand-harvested to replenish seeds before they are no longer viable.&nbsp;

“While they’re easy to grow, they require a lot of time to clean and maintain,” Raupp said. “My biggest job is just maintaining the collection so we have enough seed on hand to provide the researchers so that they can do their work.”

Today, Raupp noted he annually fulfills about 100 different requests for those seeds from researchers in neighboring states to those in countries on the other side of the planet. Aided by modern research techniques like genetic sequencing and CRISPR, these researchers continue to unlock more of that ancient genetic potential to improve the wheat varieties of tomorrow - from sawfly resistance to higher protein content to how root morphologies aid drought resistance.&nbsp;

“It’s been a gold mine,” Harries said. “You go treasure hunting in this collection that you’ve created here. A lot of the traits that we have for stripe rust, leaf rust and viral traits all come from those wild wheat relatives. And that work is far from over.”&nbsp;

It would take two major evolutionary events that mixed three different grass species to make the first bread wheat genome.&nbsp;The first stop on this timeline was the merger of two wild ancestors that resulted in the eventual creation of wild emmer wheat (genome formula AB).&nbsp;“As a species in nature, nature produced bread wheat around half a million years ago,” Gill said. “Two grasses, they happened to have fun. They hybridized - and that produced bread wheat.”&nbsp;The second stop on the timeline came more than 10,000 years ago when that wild emmer wheat was combined with an ancient goatgrass (genome formula D). That genetic mix resulted in the first crop cultivated by humankind.&nbsp;“In some farmer’s field, some goat grass hybridized with emmer wheat, which originated in Syria,” Gill said. “And that farmer was smart enough, he selected that plant. And that’s our bread wheat.”&nbsp;From there, Mother Nature kept mixing in wild wheat relatives to this new bread wheat - and farmers selected the most successful versions to plant again.&nbsp;“After wheat originated, these wild wheats kept cross-hybridizing with domesticated wheat,” Gill said. “There were no breeders, but nature was doing breeding for the first 10,000 years. They were cross-pollinating and farmers were selecting new types out of that.”&nbsp;This origin story is important because it explains why the wheat genome is so complex. Wheat is a hexaploid, meaning it has six sets of seven chromosomes. Most genes in wheat exist in three copies - one each from those A, B and D genomes. As a result, there are 16 billion DNA letters in the wheat genome - the human genome has three billion letters - meaning you could type out the genetic code of wheat in 12-point font and the type will go around the world.&nbsp;This triplication and redundancy make wheat very hard to genetically analyze.&nbsp;“It’s essentially three different genomes coexisting in one,” Gill said. “It’s like three married people living in one house. Each can be independent, so that causes the problem. How do you sleep in one room without messing it up? Wheat is a very elegant genetic system.”&nbsp;While hard to pick through, that complexity also makes wheat a more durable crop.&nbsp;“This is called genetic buffering,” Gill said. “It’s almost like there are three soldiers or three genes. So, one goes out, the second one is there. The second goes out, the third one is there. Wheat can tolerate the extremes of environment because of this buffering caused by the redundancy of the genes.”&nbsp;With this understanding of the origin and complexity of wheat - how does that relate to wheat breeding programs? Fast forward to 1979 when Gill did a postdoctoral fellowship at K-State and was first exposed to the genetic stocks used to map genes and breed wheat. He took that experience with him to his second postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-Riverside, where he was blown away by the genetic diversity of a collection of wild weeds.&nbsp;Gill started to form a vision of a resource that would combine the two - a collection of wild wheat relatives with unlocked genetic potential and a wheat breeding program that could replicate Mother Nature’s process of pulling in traits to make better varieties for farmers to plant.&nbsp;In 1980, Gill wrote a grant and flew on a small plane to Hutchinson, the then-headquarters of the Kansas Wheat Commission to pitch his idea.&nbsp;“They had never funded K-State until then,” Gill said. “I presented my vision - we want to establish the Wheat Genetics Resource Center because that’s where we’re going next. A yield bump is going to come from this because of that genetic diversity. Nobody knew what wild wheats were in the Great Plains at that time. I said I know that this is where the next big evolution is.”&nbsp;Backed by approval from K-State’s wheat breeder at the time, the commissioners agreed to provide the seed money. Gill gathered an initial collection of 500 genetic lines, including seeds from collections in Japan, Israel, Russia and other countries. He immediately dove into early projects identifying Hessian fly resistance and leaf rust resistance in lines of Aegilops tauschii (Tausch's goatgrass), which was relatively easy to cross into wheat.&nbsp;“We are just doing what happened in nature,” Gill said. “That’s how bread wheat arose, so we are essentially repeating the same process except we’re doing it in the lab.”&nbsp;Raupp has served as the curator of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center since August 1980. He noted the collection is up to about 4,200 lines, ranging from Aegilops tauschii which grows anywhere from Turkey to western China to one species that is only found in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt and a little bit into Israel.&nbsp;It’s his job to maintain the stocks of this genetic material, making sure scientists and breeders have access to the seeds they need to complete projects. That doesn’t mean these seeds only sit in a gigantic refrigerator. To maintain their integrity, the seeds must be planted, grown either in a greenhouse or an outdoor plot and often hand-harvested to replenish seeds before they are no longer viable.&nbsp;“While they’re easy to grow, they require a lot of time to clean and maintain,” Raupp said. “My biggest job is just maintaining the collection so we have enough seed on hand to provide the researchers so that they can do their work.”Today, Raupp noted he annually fulfills about 100 different requests for those seeds from researchers in neighboring states to those in countries on the other side of the planet. Aided by modern research techniques like genetic sequencing and CRISPR, these researchers continue to unlock more of that ancient genetic potential to improve the wheat varieties of tomorrow - from sawfly resistance to higher protein content to how root morphologies aid drought resistance.&nbsp;“It’s been a gold mine,” Harries said. “You go treasure hunting in this collection that you’ve created here. A lot of the traits that we have for stripe rust, leaf rust and viral traits all come from those wild wheat relatives.
