Normagene Rowley, 98, passed away on July 19, 2025, at Pratt Regional Medical Center in&nbsp;Pratt, Kansas. She was born January 4, 1927, in Augusta, Kansas, to Raymond and Kathryn&nbsp;“Kate” (Alsup) Noll. She graduated from high school in McPherson, Kansas. She married Virgil&nbsp;Lee Rowley on August 19,1943 in McPherson, Kansas. &nbsp;Together they welcomed 3 children;&nbsp;Donald Lee, Kathryn Irene, and John Raymond Rowley.&nbsp; Normagene cared for her family while Virgil was stationed in Germany during WW II. She and&nbsp;Virgil later operated a grocery store in Radium, Kansas, as well as Normagene being employed&nbsp;as a Union Pacific Railroad Agent, and a United States Postmaster. Normagene cherished&nbsp;spending time with friends and family. She was a member of the VFW in Russell, Ks, and loved&nbsp;to dance. She spent many hours in the kitchen and was the keeper of many favorite family&nbsp;recipes. Her house was a welcoming haven, always open for heartfelt visits and a refreshing&nbsp;drink.&nbsp; Normagene is survived by her three children and spouses: Donald Lee Rowley of Hutchinson,&nbsp;KS, Kathryn Irene (Lewis) Burkes of Great Bend, KS, and John Raymond (Donna) Rowley of&nbsp;Russell, KS; nine grandchildren, &nbsp;Donald Lee Rowley Jr. (Whitney), Michael Burkes, Matthew&nbsp;Burkes (Catrisa), Molly Hillman (David), Madison Burkes (Jennifer), Mitchel Burkes, Jennifer&nbsp;Bright (Sean), Jesse Rowley (Danielle), Amy Shelton (Michael); 19 great grandchildren; five&nbsp;great- great grandchildren; and lifelong friend Arletta Detherage, all of &nbsp;whom she loved dearly. &nbsp; Normagene was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Kathryn (Kate) Noll, brother&nbsp;Donald Noll, husband Virgil Lee Rowley, 2 close aunts Olive Davisson and Blanche Shelley,&nbsp;and close companion Henry (Hank) Schubert, along with many close friends over her 98 years. &nbsp; Cremation has been chosen. &nbsp;A family service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life.&nbsp;Hutchinson Funeral Chapel is in &nbsp;charge of the arrangements.&nbsp;

With President Trump’s signature, the wide-ranging reconciliation package—referred to by some as the “Big Beautiful Bill”—has officially become law, delivering long-overdue relief for Kansas farmers and rural communities.

While much of the public attention focused on other provisions, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, highlighted how the law incorporates key elements of the long-delayed Farm Bill—provisions that are vital to the state’s agricultural backbone.

“This legislation includes the bulk of what’s traditionally known as Title One of the Farm Bill—the safety net that helps farmers keep going when market conditions make it nearly impossible to turn a profit,” Moran said in a recent interview. “This is something they can take to their bankers to secure financing and get operations moving for the new year.”

It has been seven years since the last Farm Bill was passed in 2018. In the interim, Kansas farmers have faced rising input costs for fuel, fertilizer, labor, and interest, while commodity prices have remained low. Moran said the resulting economic pressure has left many producers operating at a loss.

“The agricultural sectors in Kansas are getting squeezed,” Moran said. “This new law offers stability at a time when it's desperately needed.”

Moran also noted recent discussions with farm advocacy groups—including representatives from the soybean, sorghum, corn, and grain industries—who visited Capitol Hill to stress the urgency of relief. “Even if you're not a farmer, communities across Kansas depend on agriculture. Towns like Sylvia or Larned are deeply tied to whether or not local farmers are successful,” he said.

Alongside the new law, farmers are also benefiting from emergency disaster assistance passed by Congress last December. That funding is now available through local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices and includes support for both weather-related losses and broader economic hardships.

“While recent rains have eased drought conditions in much of the state, the long-term damage remains,” Moran said. “Programs like this are making a real difference on the ground right now.”

The legislation also marks progress in a longstanding policy goal for Moran—permanently repealing the federal estate tax, commonly referred to as the “death tax,” for family farms and small businesses.

“Too many families have been forced to sell land or assets just to pay taxes after the death of a loved one,” Moran said. “These are businesses that are asset-rich but not necessarily income-rich. The new law helps ensure family operations can continue into the next generation without being penalized.”

Moran called the new law “a lifeline for Kansas,” and said its impact will be felt not just in the fields, but across every small town and rural community that depends on a strong and stable farm economy.

“Whether you live in Hutchinson or a town of a few hundred people, if agriculture suffers, the entire community feels it,” he said. “This law brings much-needed security to our farmers—and by extension, to all of Kansas.”

Moran talks ag protection in reconciliation bill 

Robert Eugene “Bob” Enders, 101, died July 26, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born March 8, 1924, in Lyons, to W. Elmer and Jessie Amelia (Young) Enders.

Robert graduated from Lyons High School in 1942. &nbsp;After graduation, he enrolled in Kansas State University, but was there for only one semester, as he was drafted into the United States Navy. &nbsp;Robert served in the United States Navy, in the Pacific on the U.S. S. Bountiful, from 1943-1946. &nbsp; During his lifetime, Robert enjoyed a variety of occupations. &nbsp;He worked as a farmer, butcher, helped set up deli’s for Piggly Wiggly, and was an auctioneer for Navajo Rug Auctions. &nbsp;In 2014, at the age of 90, he moved back to Kansas from New Mexico, where Robert had lived for 54 years.&nbsp;

One of his proudest high school moments was during his senior year. &nbsp;Robert was a member of a brass quintet that received a “I” rating at the state music festival. &nbsp;In addition, prior to his passing, he was the oldest living alumni of Lyons High School. &nbsp;Robert was also a charter member of the Rice County Valley Bluebirds 4-H Club. &nbsp;He enjoyed painting, woodcarving, and staying active. &nbsp;Robert was a member of the Hutchison Antique and Collectors Club, McPherson Gem and Mineral Club, the Hutchinson Antique and Collectors Club, American Legion Lysle Post #68, and Eastwood Church of Christ.&nbsp;

On July 17, 1944, he married Dorothy Janssen, in Seattle, WA. &nbsp;Their marriage ended in divorce. &nbsp;Robert later married Mae, Winnie and Leslie. &nbsp;They all preceded him in death. &nbsp;

Robert is survived by: &nbsp;daughters, Cynthia Landon (Guy Colle) of Hutchinson and Carol Crites (Scott) of Calera, OK; sister, Phyllis Hughes of Lyons; brother, Paul Enders (Arlene) of Duluth, GA; grandson, Justin Enders (Laura) of Overland Park; three great-grandchildren, Walter, Eleanor, and Louis Enders; two nieces; several cousins; and numerous stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; son, Richard “Rick” Enders; son-in-law, Perry Landon, brother-in-law, Charles Hughes; and Cynthia, Rick, and Carol’s mother, Dorothy.

Celebration of Life will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, in Fellowship Hall, at Eastwood Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum. &nbsp;At 2:00 p.m., there will be a short service, with military honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard. &nbsp;Graveside inurnment will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Richard D. Kennedy, 80, of Hutchinson, died July 26, 2025, at his home surrounded by love. He was born April 17, 1945, in Tulia, Texas, to Charles and Inabelle (Petty) Kennedy. &nbsp;

Richard graduated from Happy High School in 1963 and attended Texas Tech University. He worked as a financial advisor and retired after many years from Iroquis Center in Greensburg. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On March 24, 1979, he married Victoria Halpain, in Perryton, Texas. They shared 46 beautiful years of marriage before his death. &nbsp;

Richard was well known for his good-natured heart and boundless kindness. He loved God and his faith was visible to all who met him. Richard enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisher, and golfer. Above all, Richard loved to spend time with his wife, children, and especially his grandchildren. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Richard is survived by: beloved wife, Vickie Kennedy of Hutchinson, KS; children, Teffany Kennedy of Talent, OR, Randy (Becky) Kennedy of Canyon, TX, Michele (Tony) Clark of Hays, KS, Chad Kennedy of Columbia, MO, John (Jennifer) Kennedy of Hutchinson, KS, and Michael (Shannon) Kennedy of Shawnee, KS; brother, Robert (Carole) Kennedy of Fredericksburg, TX; and 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my dear wife, Janet Susan Regier (née Fields), of Hutchinson, Kansas on July 27, 2025, at the age of 79. &nbsp;She passed peacefully, with her husband Jerold at her bedside, after a courageous battle with diabetes and multiple strokes. &nbsp;Janet was born on June 19, 1946, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Robert Edward “Bob” Fields and Lucy Louise Fields Charbeneau (née Bryan). In 1964, Janet graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, Texas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin as an English major. While attending UT, Janet met Gary Rock at Atlantic Richfield Company (Arco). Janet and Gary married in 1967 and had two children, Wendy and Tom. &nbsp;They lived in Dallas, Texas, and, in 1980, relocated to Claremont, California.

&nbsp;Janet participated in extensive volunteer work, including many years of service with the Claremont Junior Women’s Club, where she passionately served her community through various fundraisers benefiting worthy causes and service projects such as Meals on Wheels and Special Olympics. She held several leadership roles including president. &nbsp;She also mentored young women by leading the Juniorettes. &nbsp;

She launched a catering company with her friend, Ann Stagnaro. Janet subsequently worked for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (now known as CAL FIRE) as a writer and the California Office of Tourism as a tour director. Janet and Gary later divorced, and in 1996, Janet became the Main Street Director in Temecula, California, a position she held until 1998 at which time she became a partner with Jerold Wayne “Jerry” Regier in Cutting Edge Marketing, a full-service marketing firm located in Temecula, California. The two partners quickly formed a special bond and found something lasting which led to their 24-year marriage. &nbsp;Janet, as the creative writer in the firm, was instrumental in the firm receiving multiple ADDY’s, a national advertising/marketing award for successful client campaigns. In 2008, Janet and her husband relocated to Hutchinson, Kansas (Jerry’s hometown) where they created and managed until 2014, “The Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run and Classic Car Show.” Now, 17 years later, the car show is still a downtown success.

Janet found immense joy in spending time with her kitty, Sir Delgado, and dog, Lacy, and pursuing her passion to feed every bird in town. Her love for all of God’s creatures brought so much happiness for Janet. She was also a wonderful cook and loved to entertain friends and family.

&nbsp;Janet will be remembered by her husband, Jerold “Jerry” Regier; children, Wendy (Steve) Benjamin, Thomas Rock; stepchildren, Kimberly Lilleholm, Natalie (Kevin) Bright, Justin (Heather) Regier; grandchildren, Alyssa (AJ) Yoxsimer, Cassandra (Ryan) Geraghty; eleven step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Riley Geraghty, Claire Yoxsimer; sibling, Nancy Nelson; and numerous other family members and friends.&nbsp;

Janet is preceded in death by her father and mother, Bob Fields and Louise Charbeneau, as well as her stepdaughter Kimberly Lilleholm’s husband, Dale Lilleholm.

Private family services will be held at a date to be determined.&nbsp;

In 2008, Janet and her husband relocated to Hutchinson, Kansas (Jerry’s hometown) where they created and managed until 2014, “The Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run and Classic Car Show.” Now, 17 years later, the car show is still a downtown success.Janet found immense joy in spending time with her kitty, Sir Delgado, and dog, Lacy, and pursuing her passion to feed every bird in town. Her love for all of God’s creatures brought so much happiness for Janet. Tickets are $50 and available in advance or at the door. Sponsorships, which include table seating for eight and promotional opportunities, range from $400 to $1,250. All proceeds go toward programs that serve residents across Reno County.&nbsp;

“This is our biggest fundraising event of the year,” said Major DJ James, who leads the Hutchinson Salvation Army. “It’s a great night of connection and community that allows us to keep helping people year-round.”&nbsp;

The dinner will be catered by Salt City Brewing Company, with Hutchinson Regional Medical Center President and CEO Benjamin Anderson delivering the keynote address. Fight for Hope Dinner Set for August 8 

Visit Hutch is excited to announce that Hutchinson, Kansas, has been selected by the National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) to host the 2026 World Doubles Championship, taking place October 9–11, 2026. The event will be held at the horseshoe pitching mounds in Rice Park and will be hosted in conjunction with the Rice Park Ringers Horseshoe Club, a dedicated local organization that has long supported the sport and its community.

“This marks a significant milestone for the local community and highlights Hutchinson’s growing reputation as a premier destination for national sporting events. After years of building the relationship with the NHPA, we are excited to work with their team and the Rice Park Ringers to host this Championship”, said Holly Leiker, Director of National Sales&nbsp;and Sports Events for Visit Hutch.

Horeshoe World Double Championships coming to Hutch 

The USD 308 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. at the district’s administrative center.  On the agenda is approval of a new teacher contract with NEA-Hutchinson that includes salary increases and improved health insurance support for district employees. 

The proposed agreement would raise the base salary by $2,900, bringing starting pay for new teachers with a bachelor’s degree to $49,500. Educators with a master’s degree, 60 additional credit hours, and 16 years of experience could earn up to $74,799. The district would also contribute $615 per month toward employee health insurance premiums. 

The contract also establishes supplemental pay rates for coaching and activity roles. The stipends range from $723 for an assistant Key Club sponsor to $8,062 for the high school head football coach. 

Also on the action item portion of the agenda is the presentation and possible approval of the district’s Cardiac Emergency Plan.   

On the superintendent’s consent portion of the agenda is consideration for replacement of the roof top HVAC replacement on the high school’s north gym.  The proposal from Trane is $29, 667.55.  Also, the approval of funding for solar shades to be installed in 20 classrooms at Faris Elementary.  The proposal from Schammerhorn Custom Window Treatments is for   $$25,667.55 and includes the installation of the new shades and removal of the existing blinds.  

The agenda also includes multiple agreements with community and educational partners. These include partnerships with the Boys &amp; Girls Club, ESSDACK (Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas), JAG-K (Jobs for America’s Graduates–Kansas), McAdams Academy, Reno County Education Cooperative #610, Salthawk Community Support at Trinity United Methodist Church, United Way of Reno County, and swimming pool rental agreement with the YMCA.

USD 308 BOE to consider NEA contract at meeting 

A former Hutchinson Monarchs player was killed following a shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, on Saturday.&nbsp; Deputy Elijah Ming was a 9-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

Ming, 34, was critically wounded around 3:45 p.m. while responding to a call for assistance at a residence in the 2600 block of South 30th Street. A woman had contacted law enforcement seeking help to move out, citing threats involving a firearm made by a man at the home.

Ming and a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer arrived at the scene when the shooting occurred. Ming was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect, identified by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as 40-year-old Shawn Harris, barricaded himself inside the home, prompting a standoff that lasted approximately two hours. Harris was eventually shot when he exited the home; his condition has not been released.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police confirmed that Ming had succumbed to his injuries.

In addition to his service in law enforcement, Ming was remembered for his days as a player with the Hutchinson Monarchs baseball team. The organization shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, recalling his “quiet confidence,” dedication to a future in law enforcement, and the joy he brought to the dugout during NBC World Series tournaments.

“Elijah’s smile could light up a room,” the team wrote. “He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.”

Ming’s death marks another tragic loss for the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office, which has faced multiple line-of-duty deaths in recent years. Community members, fellow officers, and friends have expressed condolences and shared memories of Ming’s faith, service, and impact. field.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Funeral arrangements for Deputy Ming have not yet been announced.

Day 3 of the NBC World Series brought a wave of offense, dramatic comebacks, and dominant performances under the Kansas summer sun and late into the night. Here's a game-by-game recap:

Junction City overcame a 2-1 deficit to down TPA Texas 11-7 in a game where both teams combined for 23 hits. Despite outhitting the Brigade 12-11, TPA couldn’t capitalize on key opportunities.

Kyler Horsman led the Brigade with a 3-for-5 performance, including a home run and four RBIs, earning Player of the Game honors. Gannon White also added three hits and scored three times, while Gabe Yonto stole two bases to spark the Brigade offense.

Luke Regas paced TPA with two RBIs. Starter Ben Stec allowed nine runs—just three earned—over four innings. Joey Ruller earned the win for Junction City, striking out six over 5.1 innings.

The Goldpanners overcame a 4-run deficit in the middle innings to rally past GPS Legends 8-6 in another offense-heavy contest.

Betty Lou (Morris) Hill, 93, of Buhler, died July 25, 2025, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community. She was born January 23, 1932, in Hutchinson, to Thomas A. and Edna E. (Lisman) Morris.

Betty graduated from Yaggy Grade School and Reno Community High School in Nickerson. She was a farm wife and homemaker on the family farm near Plevna for 50 years before retiring and moving to Hutchinson. Betty was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was the organist for Huntsville and Sylvia United Methodist Churches and past member of U.M.W. She was a community leader for Huntsville 4-H Club, Secretary of Reno County 4-H Fair Board, served 3 years on Farmers Home Administration Board. Betty was also a member of Hutchinson Iris Club, joining in 1964, and American Iris Society. She also was a waitress at South Central Livestock Café, worked in the E.H.U. booth and Fine Arts Department at the Kansas State Fair for 50 years, and was inducted into “Kansas Association Hall of Fame” in 1990.

On March 23, 1952, Betty married Lloyd Grant Hill, in Nickerson. They shared 73 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her children, Bruce Hill (Shirla) of Mountain Home, AR, Debra Crose of Hutchinson; son-in-law, Dennis Mesa of Olathe; grandchildren, Tomisha Broach (Jason), Russell Hill, Krista Cannon (Aaron), Andrea Mesa-Leathers (Chris), Brittany Mesa-Algarra (Nathan), Jessica Wingler (Jason), Megan Fitzwater (Dustin), Richard Van Deusen; 15 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Lanette Mesa; sisters, Vesta Cooper and husband Harland, Eula Mae Morris; brothers, Claude Morris and wife Doris, Amos Morris and wife Esther.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed and the link to view it (below) will be available beginning at 10:15 a.m. the day of the service.

KANSAS — July 26, 2025 — Federal education officials have announced the release of more than $5 billion in previously withheld education funds nationwide, with Kansas set to benefit ahead of the 2025-2026 academic year.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) had frozen approximately $45 million in education funds for Kansas earlier this year, part of a broader delay involving grants approved by Congress. Those funds are now being released and include critical support for migrant students, teacher training, English learners, and academic enrichment.

Billy Ray Ackley, 79, passed away on July 24, 2025, at his home in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on September 20, 1945, in Cherokee, OK to Clyde Emmett and Sarah Ann (Whitehead) Ackley.

Billy attended school in Cherokee, OK and Ulysses, KS. On May 22, 1971, Billy married Helen Sharpe in Scott City, KS. He worked for Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in the HVAC maintenance department.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and numerous loved ones.

Billy is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Bryan (Miranda) Ackley; daughter, Annell Ackley; sisters, Ruth Ann Kirby and Irma Elliott; grandson, Nathan Ackley and a granddaughter, Avalyn Ackley. He also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Billy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. Jed lived in Hutchinson Kansas for his entire life and graduated from Nickerson High School in 1995. &nbsp;In high school, Jed wrestled and played football – as a wrestler, he won 2nd at State. &nbsp;After graduation from Nickerson High School in 1995, Jed worked at Dillons Warehouse for the last 27 years. &nbsp;

Jed was known among his friends and family for his witty sense of humor – often making you laugh so hard, you would cry. &nbsp;Jed loved playing golf with his buddies and fishing in the Minnesota/Canadian Boundary Waters for small mouth bass with his Dad. &nbsp;He also enjoyed bird hunting with his Dad. &nbsp;Jed was very kind and generous – always helping his folks with many, many projects without complaint. &nbsp;Our hearts are broken by his sudden loss and he will be dearly missed. &nbsp;

The watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.

Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. The affected counties include Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Kingman, and Sedgwick.

This is just a portion of a larger watch area that covers most of eastern Kansas, Missouri, and eastern Oklahoma.

The Weather Service says recent and expected rainfall could produce dangerous runoff, increasing the potential for flash flooding in urban and rural areas alike.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to act quickly if flood warnings are issued.

Drivers are reminded to never attempt to cross flooded roads and to use caution during heavy rain.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — The Kansas State Fair marked a historic moment today as staff gathered to sign a steel support beam destined for the new permanent canopy over Peoples Bank and Trust Arena.

With construction well underway, Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz invited employees to leave their mark—literally—on the project by adding their names to one of the beams that will soon become a permanent part of the arena’s upgraded structure.

“This is about more than just steel and shade,” Schulz said. “It’s about making the fairgrounds more comfortable, more accessible, and better equipped for events year-round.”

The new canopy promises a cooler and more enjoyable experience for visitors, especially during the hot September days when the Kansas State Fair is in full swing. The structure will also enhance the arena’s ability to host free stage shows, concerts, and other entertainment options in comfort and shade.

Beyond the annual fair, the canopy will allow Peoples Bank and Trust Arena to be used for additional events throughout the year—opening the door for more community gatherings, performances, and special events.

Fairgoers can expect to see the completed canopy in action this September during the 2025 Kansas State Fair.

WICHITA, Kan. — The 91st NBC World Series opened Thursday with a pair of games at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium. The Dodge City A’s cruised to an 8-0 run-rule victory over the Seattle Cheney Studs in seven innings, while the Hays Larks held on for a 6-5 win over the Seattle Blackfins.

Day 2 action on Friday features four games. The noon opener pits the Lonestar Kraken against the Denver Cougars, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup between the BTL Hornets and Lonestar Baseball Club.

The evening session begins at 6 p.m. with the Hutchinson Monarchs taking on the San Diego Stars. The night concludes with the Derby Twins facing the Santa Barbara Foresters at 8:30 p.m.

TOPEKA — High temperatures this week drew a caution from the regional organization that ensures reliability of the power grid and led Evergy to ask some customers to conserve energy usage.

The Southwest Power Pool is one of nine regional transmission organizations approved by federal regulators to support reliable power supplies and infrastructure. SPP works with energy companies to make sure that when customers set their thermostat, they&nbsp; soon hear the answering hum of the air conditioner.

SPP issued a low-level weather advisory for Tuesday through Thursday, warning of hot weather, said spokeswoman Meghan Sever.

“This is because of the high temperatures, and while it does include Kansas, a weather advisory does not require the public to conserve energy,” she said.

Such a situation isn’t unusual during hot Kansas summers. In fact, Kansas City meteorologist Joe Lauria vented on Facebook that people are using “extreme” too often in describing weather.

“What used to be an ‘excessive’ heat warning has been replaced with the phrase ‘extreme,’ ” he wrote. “I can sort of get behind that in the ‘extreme’ sense IF something extreme was going to happen, but what’s ahead, at least into Monday is NORMAL HEAT. 90-95° days are NORMAL for us in the hottest part of the year. We average around 40 days/year of 90°+ days, and YES they’re supposed to be humid and YES we’re supposed to have heat indices 100°-105°+ seemingly every day.”

This week was initially supposed to see temps spike over 100 degrees. Still, even with staying in the 90s across the state, the load on the power grid gets intense.

On Wednesday, Evergy reached out to residential and business customers that signed up to be part of its demand response program to manage that load.

That program asks willing customers to curtail their energy load, said Evergy spokeswoman Courtney Lewis.

“Business customers may participate in a variety of ways, which may&nbsp;include turning off lights, changing their production process, increasing temperature at their facilities, or using back-up generation,” she said in an email.

Washburn University, a large-load user, sent a campuswide email telling staff to adapt building temperatures.

An email from Lori Hutchinson, executive director of strategic communications and marketing, asked Washburn staff in most campus buildings to turn up thermostats from 74 to 80 degrees between 2 and 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Washburn participates in Evergy’s Generation Substitution Service, a special tariff for larger customers in Evergy’s Kansas Central territory, Lewis said.

Those customers are willing to switch to back-up generation when Evergy asks them, she said.

Evergy works with customers willing to adapt their energy use during high-use times, and customers receive a break in their rates,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.evergy.com/ways-to-save/incentives-link/demand-response" target="_blank">the company’s website said</a>.

“It’s been interesting — a lot of the largest customers have not been motivated by the demand response piece, notwithstanding the potential rate benefits for them,” said David Campbell, Evergy president and CEO, in a Monday Kansas Corporation Commission hearing. “I’m sure that will be a dialogue that continues over time.”

Campbell said the number of times that Evergy needs to call on customers to interrupt their energy usage is low, although the program does require flexibility.

“I think that the range of opportunities of large customers bringing solutions to be more proactive in how you think about demand-response is a way that we can meet the moment historically,” he said.

The summer seasonal forecast this year showed a 40-60% chance of higher temperatures than usual across the SPP territory, Sever said. The organization uses various tools and systems to mitigate risk.

“Under different scenarios, like when we experience higher-than-normal temperatures that drive increased load, we may call on generating units to commit to run earlier or more often than usual, delay planned outages, import energy from neighboring systems or tap into available reserves, depending on the severity and duration of events affecting energy reliability,” she said.

Hot weather leads to power grid impacts, requests for some Kansas customers to conserve energy

ARLINGTON, Kan. — Reno County EMS broke ground Thursday on a long-awaited new ambulance station in Arlington, marking a key step toward improving facilities and maintaining strong response times in western Reno County.

The new station, designated EMS Station 3, will be located at 107 W. Fair St. and replaces the current downtown Arlington station, which officials described as outdated and overcrowded.

“This has been a project that’s been in the works for over six years,” said Reno County EMS Chief Dave Johnston. “Our current station in this area is a little rough and has needed replacement for several years, but we’re really excited to have this coming in.”

Located in one of Kansas’ largest counties by area, Reno County EMS serves a coverage area of more than 1,250 square miles.&nbsp;

The Arlington station's central location in the western part of the county makes it a critical component in the countywide emergency response system.

“It’s a great base for us to serve a large portion of the western county and improve our response times in this area,” Johnston said. “It also shows a commitment that the county and the hospital have to the community.”

Reno County EMS operates under Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and was able to fund the new station in part through allocations from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The facility will include two bays and primarily house one ambulance, known as Medic 3. It will be staffed 24/7 by at least one paramedic and an EMT or a second paramedic. Space is also included for a second, backup ambulance if needed.

“Typically, we’ll have two providers out here, and if staffing requires it, we can move additional resources,” Johnston said.

Space is also included for a second, backup ambulance if needed.“Typically, we’ll have two providers out here, and if staffing requires it, we can move additional resources,” Johnston said.Paramedic Kyli McGreevy, who currently works at the downtown Arlington station, said the new facility will be a major upgrade.“Our current station is just really old, kind of rundown, and we’re ready for an upgrade,” McGreevy said. “We’re excited to have more space, more separation, and dedicated work areas instead of one giant room.”McGreevy noted that the Arlington crew covers the largest service area of any Reno County EMS unit, roughly two-thirds of the county, due to the rural nature of the region.“Even being stationed here, if we have to go all the way to Sylvia or Plevna, we still have about a 20- to 30-minute response time,” she said. “Having this station out here is super helpful for a lot of the county. We’re able to provide that care just a little bit quicker.”Construction, which is being done by Ward Davis Builders, is expected to be completed in early 2026.&nbsp;
