Heat Advisory extended

The National Weather Service has extended a Heat Advisory for a large portion of Kansas, warning residents to brace for dangerously hot conditions from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Communities across Reno Rice McPherson, Harvey, Kingman, Pratt, Stafford counties and most of the eastern two-thirds of Kansas.  will be under the advisory. Some of the cities affected include Hutchinson, Lyons, McPherson, Newton, Wichita, Kingman and Pratt.

According to the advisory, heat index values could climb as high as 108 degrees, posing risks for heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Officials urge residents to:

  1. Drink plenty of water
  2. Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces
  3. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat
  4. Wear light and loose-fitting clothing
  5. Check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives

Those who must be outdoors are encouraged to schedule activities for early morning or evening and to take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
