HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital had news about her colleague to share this week.

"Dr. Smith has announced his retirement," Miller said. "His last day is Sept. 2. It's definitely bittersweet. I love working with him, but, you know, he's ready to be able to spend time with his family. Three grown girls, he's off moving one from college to the first job. He wants to be able to spend more time with family. I know myself and staff and definitely our clients are going to miss him, but we wish him the best. He definitely deserves this."

There will be an event to commemorate Randy's service.

"We are going to have a come and go retirement event on Saturday, Sept. 2. Normal hours 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. that morning. We won't be seeing appointments. You can just come congratulate Dr. Smith and see him and kind of wish him well on his retirement."

Current patients can continue to receive care at Apple Lane.

"You won't see Dr. Smith any more in office," Miller said. "You will see me. Hopefully, we'll get another doctor in too, and so you may see them, as well."

Miller is actively looking for another veterinarian to join the practice.

Hutch vet to retire

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was picked to finish second in the 2023 Jayhawk West championship chase, according to the league's annual preseason coaches' poll released on Thursday.

The predicted second-place finish is the highest in head coach Delice Downing's four seasons with the Blue Dragons. It's the highest predicted finish since 2018 when the Dragons were picked first.

Downing returns three starters and five players from last season's 26-12 team that advanced to the Region VI Tournament semifinals.

All-KJCCC outside hitter Taniya Golden is back after averaging .287 kills per set and hitting .227.

Middle blocker Anna Dean returns after a solid freshman season where she averaged 0.82 blocks and .343 hitting with 182 kills per set.

Also back is outside hitter Alejandra Briseno, who missed 2 1/2 weeks of her freshman season midway through 2022. Briseno hit .232 with 2.09 kills per set. She also averaged 0.29 service aces with her powerful jump serve.

Setter Giovanna Ravanhani also returns. She was the second setter in Hutchinson's 6-2 attack in 2022. Ravanhani averaged 3.44 set assists per match.

Middle Ashlyn Long averaged 0.64 block and 0.55 kills per set last season in limited duty.

Butler, the 2021 Region VI Tournament champion and 2022 Region VI runner-up was picked to win the 2023 Jayhawk Conference championship, according to the poll. Then it was Hutchinson, Seward County, Colby, Dodge City, Garden City, Cloud County, Barton and Pratt.

The Blue Dragons have two more preseason scrimmage dates before the regular season opens. Hutchinson will be at the Butler Preseason Classic on Saturday at El Dorado and then will play host to Central Christian, Bethel College and McPherson College in a preseason scrimmage on Tuesday beginning at Noon at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons will open the 2023 season with four matches at the McCook Classic where Hutchinson will play McCook, Casper, Gillette and Northeastern Junior College.

The Dragons open at home with a triangular against the Bethel College JV and Kansas Wesleyan JV on August 23rd. Hutchinson will open Jayhawk West play with Dodge City on August 30 at the Sports Arena.

🏐 HutchCC picked 2nd in KJCCC coaches' poll

Betty Lou Preston passed peacefully at the age of 93 on August 4, 2023 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born September 29, 1929, in Hutchinson, to Roy Edward and Lillian Jane (Evans) Lyen.

Betty attended Hutchinson High School. She went on to College of Cosmetology in Dodge City. She was a beautician and owned her own shop in Hutchinson.

In her spare time, she loved to attend her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s ball games, barbecue’s, family gatherings and holidays. Betty also enjoyed ceramics, flowers, and playing cards, especially 5 Point Pitch. She was a fan of Royals baseball. Betty was very knowledgeable about the game and even had her favorite players. In addition, she was an avid bird watcher; she knew the different species of birds, what to feed them, and how to keep them coming. Upon her retirement, she and her husband became “winter Texans” traveling and staying in Crooked Tree and Harlingen, TX with her sister-in-law, brother-in-law and several friends.

Betty was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. She was a member of several circles working mainly on projects for the blind.

On February 1, 1951, she married William Franklin Preston in Hutchinson. They enjoyed 72 years of marriage.

Betty is survived by: her husband, William ‘Bill’ Preston of Hutchinson; children, Janice Preston of Haven, Jim (Beth) Preston of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jeff (Callie) Brawner of Burrton, Matt (Amber) Brawner of Burrton, Amy (Jack) Conkling of Hutchinson, and Andy (Emily) Preston of Bel Aire; great-grandchildren, Bailey (Kendell) Born of Hutchinson, Brooke Brawner of Hutchinson, Brie, Avery, Cole, and Lyndi Brawner all of Burrton, Mackie and Brax Conkling of Hutchinson, and Paisley, Reese, and Blair Preston, all of Bel Aire; great-great-grandson, Stetson Born of Hutchinson; brothers-in-law, David (Shirley) Preston of Lake Jackson, TX and Rick (Betty) Preston of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Lillian and sister, Laurel Tiger.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Cremation has taken place.

Friends may sign her book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Cody and Becca Ruebke recently bought into the XP
League franchise with hopes of bringing positivity and safe online gaming to
the youth of Reno County and the surrounding areas.

XP League is a nationwide youth esports league that has over 50 locations across
the U.S. and Canada. The league is the first Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)
competitive gaming league in North America for elementary, middle, and high
school aged players.

“We’ve been interested in starting our own business for a while now,” Cody Ruebke
said. “Our kids aren’t super big into sports, but play a lot of video games, so
it just kind of made sense and is something our kids would be interested in,
plus something we’re very passionate about.”

The coaches for the XP League don't just sign up and become a coach
automatically, there is work that has to be done first.

"All of our coaches have to go through a certification," Becca
Ruebke said. "They all have tons of coaching experience and/or really
significant game skills. The coaches training goes through positive
communication and teamwork and how to handle kids getting through a
defeat."

The kids in the league in Hutchinson have the opportunity to play against
other kids from all over the country and do some in a safe space.

"All of our kids get to play against other XP League kids from Texas,
Florida, Washington and so on," Cody Ruebke said. "We have custom
servers, so these kids aren't getting into matches with strangers, we're
actually monitoring all of the servers, so we know they're live against other
XP League kids."

XP League strives to make their product safe for all of its members to
enjoy.

"I could talk all day long about our coaches," Becca Ruebke said.
"We talk a lot about the different benefits. The coaching and the
connection with teammates and the sense of belonging kids get from being on a
team."

Esports is one of the fastest growing industries in the world with several
high schools, colleges and universities adding teams, and for Ruebke that's
another huge positive for the league.

"Kelsey Hensley, the esports coach at HutchCC has done a great job of
being mentors for our kids," Cody Ruebke said. "Trying to bring
esports into the spotlight and being something, people can be excited about.
Also, we want to do this because there are career opportunities and further
education opportunities that go along with this. There is only one high school
in the area with an esports team and that's Buhler. HutchCC has scholarship
opportunities they can give out every year and they don't have enough kids they
can give them out to."

According to Cody Ruebke, there are several opportunities and varieties for
kids to try.

"We offer seven different games right now," Cody Ruebke said.
"XP League is always looking for new games to add to the lineup. When the
kid signs up, they do sign up for a specific game."

When signed up, you're locked into that particular game for eight weeks.

"Each season is eight weeks long," Cody Ruebke said. "You can
switch over from one game to another after that season is up, but you are
required to stay in the one game for eight weeks."

If you or someone you know is interested in signing up, the process is
simple.

"So, everybody has to sign up on our website," Cody Ruebke said.
"Our signup is very similar to a subscription service. Once you sign up,
it will charge your credit card once a month. We have different tiers to our
membership, so price points are different."

Because the franchise is new to the area, there is a discount going on for
those interested in signing up now.

"We are running a founding family discount right now," Cody Ruebke
said. "Everybody that signs up for the league before September 5th gets
$20 off their monthly membership until they get out of the league."

The couple held a grand opening celebration in late July to help promote the
new organization in the area.

"We had a really good turnout for it," Cody Ruebke said. "I
think we gave away 15 or more free coaching sessions, plus we had several walk
ins that showed up, so I felt like it was a success."

The Hutchinson location can be found at 302 E. 30th Ave. in the conference
room of the PRMI building. Although the official league name is "XP League
of NW Wichita" Ruebke said it's more for franchising purposes.&nbsp;

"Our territory stretches to Wichita, so once Hutch is up and operational,
we will move over to Wichita and open up a second location over there,"
Cody Ruebke said.&nbsp;

New esports league wants to bring safe play, positivity to Hutchinson

Kermit Gene Wedel, M.D., a family physician and community leader in Minneapolis, KS., for six decades, died peacefully on July 27, 2023, at the age of 90. He is survived by four children and his wife of 69 years, Kathleen.&nbsp;

Kerm, the son of Arthur A. and Elizabeth K. Wedel, was born at the family farmhouse in McPherson County on July 28, 1932, shortly after his identical twin brother, Ken. He told great stories of his life growing up on the farm. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in McPherson County and Moundridge High School. He then attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. On Oct. 16, 1953, he married Kathleen Zerger at Eden Mennonite Church in rural Moundridge. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine where his studies earned him selection into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.&nbsp;

Kerm spent an extra year as a surgical resident in Wichita after medical school and then joined Ken in practice in Minneapolis in 1962. Ken and Kerm worked mostly at the Minneapolis Clinic (Wedel, Wedel and Barker), two blocks from Kerm’s home on Fifth Street, where he and Kathleen would raise their growing family. Besides raising their children, the two opened their home to medical school preceptors, foreign exchange students and friends and neighbors for numerous themed events.&nbsp;

In addition to being a skilled physician, Dr. Wedel was a recognized leader in the medical profession. &nbsp;He served his profession in many capacities, including serving as President of the Kansas Medical Society in 1982-83. &nbsp;He also served as KMS’ principal delegate to the American Medical Association for two decades. &nbsp;Dr. Wedel served as an associate professor in family medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine. &nbsp;Other roles included Governor’s Commission on Healthcare and the Board of Blue Shield of Kansas. &nbsp;In his 18 years as a board member at the Kansas Health Foundation they approved $336 million in grants improving healthcare and healthcare access.

Jerry Slaughter of the Kansas Medical Society recently wrote: “It’s hard to condense down into one paragraph the contributions he made over many years, but without question, he was one of the most impactful physician leaders we have had. &nbsp;He was generous of his time, humble, pragmatic, cheerful, always positive, and never sought attention or recognition for his efforts on behalf of the profession he so ably represented.”

The same sentiment can be said for his many roles in the local community. &nbsp;He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and held many leadership positions. &nbsp;He served as member and chair of the USD 239 Board of Education, a founder of the Ottawa County Community Foundation, president of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce as well as the city council, including as mayor from 2016 to 2021. &nbsp;He was one of four community members to travel to Colorado to secure the purchase of the land that would become Rock City Park.

Most people simply knew him as Kerm or Dr. Kerm – someone who would offer medical advice, a quick hug, or a smile and handshake on the street, or as he was grilling outside the alley entrance of the Blue Moon, the local “speakeasy” restaurant that he and Kathleen opened for Friday night dinners in 1997 and operated for over 20 years.&nbsp;

Upon their retirement in 2005, The Ottawa County Hospital memorialized Kerm and Ken’s service to the community by naming sections of the hospital in their honor.

In his leisure time, Kerm and Kathleen enjoyed watching KU football and basketball games and games in which their grandchildren played. &nbsp; One of his childhood memories was capturing pigeons in the barn of KU basketball player and later Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp near Halstead. He enjoyed all sports and occasionally said that if he hadn’t been a doctor, he might have been a baseball umpire.&nbsp;

He loved spending time at the family’s cabin on Greers Ferry Lake in Arkansas. &nbsp;This provided years of enjoyment for friends and for annual gatherings of all children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that was held each year and included teaching children, grandchildren and children of friends how to ski.

Kerm was preceded in death by his brother Delbert; his twin brother, Ken; and his sister, Leola.  </figure>Kermit Gene Wedel, M.D., a family physician and community leader in Minneapolis, KS., for six decades, died peacefully on July 27, 2023, at the age of 90. He is survived by four children and his wife of 69 years, Kathleen.&nbsp;Kerm, the son of Arthur A. and Elizabeth K. Wedel, was born at the family farmhouse in McPherson County on July 28, 1932, shortly after his identical twin brother, Ken. He told great stories of his life growing up on the farm. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in McPherson County and Moundridge High School. He then attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. On Oct. 16, 1953, he married Kathleen Zerger at Eden Mennonite Church in rural Moundridge. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine where his studies earned him selection into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.&nbsp;Kerm spent an extra year as a surgical resident in Wichita after medical school and then joined Ken in practice in Minneapolis in 1962. Ken and Kerm worked mostly at the Minneapolis Clinic (Wedel, Wedel and Barker), two blocks from Kerm’s home on Fifth Street, where he and Kathleen would raise their growing family. Besides raising their children, the two opened their home to medical school preceptors, foreign exchange students and friends and neighbors for numerous themed events.&nbsp;In addition to being a skilled physician, Dr. Wedel was a recognized leader in the medical profession. &nbsp;He served his profession in many capacities, including serving as President of the Kansas Medical Society in 1982-83. &nbsp;He also served as KMS’ principal delegate to the American Medical Association for two decades. &nbsp;Dr. Wedel served as an associate professor in family medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine. &nbsp;Other roles included Governor’s Commission on Healthcare and the Board of Blue Shield of Kansas. &nbsp;In his 18 years as a board member at the Kansas Health Foundation they approved $336 million in grants improving healthcare and healthcare access.Jerry Slaughter of the Kansas Medical Society recently wrote: “It’s hard to condense down into one paragraph the contributions he made over many years, but without question, he was one of the most impactful physician leaders we have had. &nbsp;He was generous of his time, humble, pragmatic, cheerful, always positive, and never sought attention or recognition for his efforts on behalf of the profession he so ably represented.”The same sentiment can be said for his many roles in the local community. &nbsp;He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and held many leadership positions. &nbsp;He served as member and chair of the USD 239 Board of Education, a founder of the Ottawa County Community Foundation, president of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce as well as the city council, including as mayor from 2016 to 2021. &nbsp;He was one of four community members to travel to Colorado to secure the purchase of the land that would become Rock City Park.Most people simply knew him as Kerm or Dr. Kerm – someone who would offer medical advice, a quick hug, or a smile and handshake on the street, or as he was grilling outside the alley entrance of the Blue Moon, the local “speakeasy” restaurant that he and Kathleen opened for Friday night dinners in 1997 and operated for over 20 years.&nbsp;Upon their retirement in 2005, The Ottawa County Hospital memorialized Kerm and Ken’s service to the community by naming sections of the hospital in their honor.In his leisure time, Kerm and Kathleen enjoyed watching KU football and basketball games and games in which their grandchildren played. &nbsp; One of his childhood memories was capturing pigeons in the barn of KU basketball player and later Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp near Halstead. He enjoyed all sports and occasionally said that if he hadn’t been a doctor, he might have been a baseball umpire.&nbsp;He loved spending time at the family’s cabin on Greers Ferry Lake in Arkansas. &nbsp;This provided years of enjoyment for friends and for annual gatherings of all children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that was held each year and included teaching children, grandchildren and children of friends how to ski.Kerm was preceded in death by his brother Delbert; his twin brother, Ken; and his sister, Leola. Clifford Lee Ediger, 92, of Hutchinson, died August 2, 2023, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. He was born April 7, 1931, in Inman, to Henry and Minnie (Peters) Ediger.

Cliff graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949 and attended Hutchinson Community College. He worked as a press operator at the Hutchinson News for 39 years. Cliff also cut firewood all over Reno County with Willie Adkins. He was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ.

On January 14, 1951, Cliff married Carol R. Weaver, in Hutchinson. She died April; 5, 2012.

He is survived by: his children, Dennis Ediger (Rebecca), Laura Ediger (Jack Mullen), David Ediger; brothers, Wes and Gale; son-in-law, Jeff Shelton; grandchildren, Leah Rudolph (John), Zack Tyler, Kelsey Hartman (Frank), Justin Koeppen, Lucas Bishop; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and many extended family members.

Cliff was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; daughter, Rose Shelton; and brother, Darrell.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson.

Ray Edwin Bontrager, 86, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023, in Haven, Kansas. Ray was born October 7, 1936, to Jerry and Edna Bontrager in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Ray attended Haven High School and Hesston Academy graduating in 1954, and then attended Hesston College. He was married to Carol Martin at her home near Wellman, Iowa in 1958. Ray began his married life in I-W Service at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois. He then began his lifetime career as a farmer in Iowa and in 1967 returned to Yoder, Kansas, to farm his family homestead. He farmed and raised livestock for 38 years. He received numerous farming awards. He owned and operated R &amp; C Feed Service during the 1970’s. He served terms on the Yoder Township Board, Farmer’s State Bank Board and the Equus Beds Aquifer Board. During these years, he was a member of the South Hutchinson Mennonite Church.

In retirement, Ray drove school bus for the Haven School District for ten years so that he could transport his grandchildren to school. His hobbies include collecting antiques, tools and restoring old toys. He could fix anything. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Glen Marlin.

Ray is survived by: his wife; three children, Lucinda (Bob) Schooks, Ellenton, FL, Kristin Morris, South Hutchinson, KS, and Robert (Leslie) Bontrager, Nickerson, KS; grandchildren, Jesse (Annika) Morris, Winfield, KS, Emilee (Julie) Wilke, Winfield, KS, Tyler (Shanley) Morris, Wichita, KS, Mike Morris, South Hutchinson, KS, and Hannah (Richard) Hawthorne, Great Bend, KS; great-grandchildren, Franklin Morris, Kate Wilke, Ruby Wilke, Bennett Morris, Lillian Morris, Sadie Hawthorne, Ella Hawthorne and Ryker Hawthorne; three sisters, Grace Hershberger, Goshen, Indiana, Lola Faye Erb Yoder, Kalona, Iowa and Donna Mae Martin, Hesston, Kansas.

Jodi Brack-Simmons, 77, of Hutchinson, died July 27, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born October 20, 1945, in Newton, to Charles and Gladine (McClure) Smith.

Jodi graduated from Newton High School in 1963 and later attended Butler Community College. She was an administrative assistant for USD 308 middle schools for many years. Jodi was a volunteer for RSVP and Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer and board member for the Friendshop at the Hutchinson Public Library. She belonged to the Hutchinson Retired School Personnel Association. Jodi enjoyed bowling, bunko, her flower garden, dogs, and loved the color purple. More than anything she loved her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Jodi knew no strangers and welcomed all with a warm heart and open arms. Everyone was drawn to her charisma and larger than life personality. Her smile lifted the darkest spirits and her laugh could thaw the coldest heart.

On May 27, 1967, she married Robert Brack in Hutchinson. They shared 21 years before his passing on July 30, 1988.

Jodi is survived by: daughters, Jerri Brack-Bowman (Bret), Maize, Robin Brack-Zapata, Wichita; grandson, Gavan Brack Zapata, Wichita; granddaughter, Gabrielle Renee Zapata, Las Vegas; brother, Jerry Smith, Newton; and dear friend, Ann Heider, Hutchinson.

Jodi Brack-Simmons |1945-2023|

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Emancipation Day Committee is looking for new members to help with next year's event, even as they prepare for this weekend in Hutchinson. The hope is to get the next generation involved in the celebration.

"It's been 17 years," said committee member Dellis Neal. "When I moved back, I immediately got involved. My dad, Jim McCurtis was on the committee for awhile. I kind of took over his spot."

The expansion of Juneteenth into a federal holiday has not dimmed the light of the long-time Emancipation Day celebration here in Hutchinson.

"I think that there's room for both of them," Neal said. "We need all the celebration that we can get. I applaud Shontina Tipton for getting together and getting that started and she's also a big supporter of the Emancipation Day activities."

Events will begin Friday night August 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rice Park.

Bring your dinner and lawn chairs and there will be family fun and entertainment with basketball, horseshoes, cornhole, pickleball, other games and music, along with a 3-point shootout from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Jazz in the Park will be at Avenue A Park from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.

Saturday kicks off with the Emancipation Day parade headed north on Main Street from Ave. B to 12th Avenue starting at 10 a.m.

"We used to start at 12th and go down," Neal said. "We were the only ones that went backwards. Over the years, since we moved our activities to the college, we changed our parade route. It's still going to be a great parade. We're excited about our Parade Marshall, Geneo Grissom."

Grissom, a former NFL player, will then give an address at Stringer Fine Arts Center at noon on Saturday.

There will be a free community picnic in the Gallery Theatre and on the college lawn at 600 East 11th at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The annual Emancipation Dance will be Saturday night at the Encampment Building at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Dillon Hall from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Sunday will be the annual Gospelfest and Ice Cream Social at 3 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center and the Gallery Theatre.

Emancipation Day events this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College Cosmetology is beginning its annual Back to School Haircuts next week for Nickerson and South Hutchinson district students, because their regular day is on USD 309's first day of school.&nbsp;

Those students can pick up vouchers for appointments from August 8 through 11 at the Nickerson City Office at 15 North Nickerson, South Hutchinson City Office at 2 South Main in South Hutchinson, or the USD 309 District Offices at 4501 West 4th in Hutchinson.

Appointment times are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Students in all other area districts can come to get their hair cut during the regular event, which this year will be Monday, August 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children in Pre-K through grade 12 are eligible for a free haircut to be performed by HutchCC cosmetology students and volunteer cosmetologists and barbers. No appointment is necessary on the 14th; haircuts will be done on a first come, first served basis.

All haircuts will take place at&nbsp;the school’s center at 200 E. 3rd Ave., Hutchinson.

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Newton Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to host its Annual College Night again on Aug. 24 in Downtown Newton.&nbsp;

Annual College Night in Newton late-August

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference hosted its annual football media day on Friday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium in Wichita. The HutchCC Blue Dragons were picked to win the conference in the preseason coaches poll for the fifth consecutive season.

The Blue Dragons enter the 2023 season after a runner-up finish in 2022, losing to Iowa Western in the national championship game.&nbsp;

HutchCC is led by fourth year head coach Drew Dallas, who has an overall record of 28-3 in his first three seasons.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons return no offensive starters from the 2022 season. The defense on the other hand has only one starter back from last fall. HutchCC had 34 players move onto the Division I level.&nbsp;

“Have I got a deal for you?” Nothing made Robert Lee "Bob" Horyna, 78, happier than making a good deal, unless it included helping out friends and family. If you needed something, Bob Horyna was there to help.&nbsp;

Bob died July 26, 2023, at his home. He was born November 24, 1944, in Caldwell, KS, to Ben and Lucille E. (Williams) Horyna. Bob graduated from Bluff City High School in 1963 and attended Cowley County Community College. He moved to Hutchinson in 1971 and worked at Cooper Tire Service for 34 years, starting in the shop and retiring as a salesman in 2007. Besides deal-making and swap meets (he’d travel near and far for a deal or a swap meet), Bob loved traveling and gardening (well, planting anyway). He enjoyed old cars, NASCAR, and watching his grandson Peyton race. Bob told others “Life is for the living” and he definitely did that. Even after his heart slowed down, he went to his shop every day to putter and to visit with those who stopped by. He was a member of Salt City Cruisers, Campers on Mission, NSRA, and International Ford Retractable Club. Bob attended Countryside Baptist Church.

On July 3, 1965, Bob married Gayle Lynn Swafford at the Bluff City Methodist Church, sharing many wonderful years until her passing on December 13, 2005. Bob found love again and on December 9, 2006, he married Brenda D. (Manwarren) Cousins, who survives him.

Left to cherish his memory are: his daughter, Tammy Burkhart (Brent) of Hutchinson; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Garcia (Ruben) of Port Charlotte, FL; stepson, Ryan Cousins (Priscilla) of Gardner; grandsons, Jeremy Graham (Melissa), Dustin Graham (Hailey), Peyton Burkhart; step-grandchildren, Bella and Braxton Garcia, Ara Cousins; bonus granddaughters, Aelia and Anie Saner; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Ben Horyna (Cheryl) of Hutchinson; sister, Jane Schaffer (Robert) of Louisburg; sister-in-law, Rhea Horyna of Moscow; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Robert Jr.; daughters, Tracy Horyna, Teresa Graham; brother Mark, and son-in-law Scott Graham.

A funeral service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Countryside Baptist Church, 819 W. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed on the church’s website. Following the funeral, at 3:00 p.m., burial will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bluff City. A reception will follow in the Bluff City Community Building.

Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Countryside Baptist Church or Bluff City United Methodist Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Ja Rule with Disco Lines Set to Perform at Kansas State Fair Sept. 16​

Vera Louise Snowden Goss was born Feb. 11, 1935, in Hutchinson to the late Naomi and Charles Snowden. She departed this rich life on July 25, 2023, at the age of 88.

Vera was a graduate of Hutchinson Community College, where she received her Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing Health Sciences. Following college, she utilized her impeccable skills of communication, organization, planning, and caregiving to serve in various capacities, including secretarial, industrial, and private nursing.

What does it mean to have a spirit of giving? That can easily be defined by the life of Veral Louise Snowden Goss… Vera truly encompassed a beautiful spirit of giving, culminating into several service-oriented positions and appointments, including, but by no means limited to, serving as a member of the Silver Leaf Chapter #464 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Kansas and also the NAACP. Her advocacy and commitment to fighting for civil rights led to an appointment of Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the state of Kansas, wherein she tenaciously advocated to protect both the quality of life and quality of care of Kansas residents residing in long-term settings.

And yet even that level of community service could not contain Vera’s embodiment of giving, for she also volunteered at various meal centers and food banks in the Hutchinson area for decades. Up until a few years ago, she likewise served in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (grandparents program) through the Department of Education at Lincoln Elementary School, though she had no grandchildren in the school system. That is a spirit of giving! In fact, her desire to effectively engage and communicate with students, parents, and her peers even led her to take computer classes at the Elmdale 50+ Community Center.

Vera always embraced life with a welcoming, yet adventurous spirit. Her hobbies included traveling, particularly to wonderful destinations such as Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Hawaii, enriching her experience of diverse cultures through museum exhibits and activities, and spending time with her casino favorite: the slot machines! And notwithstanding, Vera also loved to embrace the freedom and fluidity of dancing, for hers was a spirit that would not be contained.

Vera was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Donald Goss Jr. As the youngest and last of 8 children, her death she was also preceded by two sisters: Elva Mae Lewis and Mary Alice Snowden; and 5 brothers: Charles Ernest Snowden, George Luther Snowden, Everett Travis Snowden, John Snowden, and Burt Snowden.

She leaves to cherish her memory 3 daughters Cherterel Goss White of Columbia, MD, Michele Goss of Alexandria, VA and Charlesatta Goss Parker of Hutchinson, KS; four grandchildren Rashawn Goss-White of College Park, MD, KeAunte’ White-Lomax of Frederick, MD, Victoria Bryant of Washington, DC and Johnathan Parker of Springfield, VA; two great grandchildren Marquet Clark of the US Navy (Japan) and Lashaun Cole of College Park, MD, and an irreplaceable host of beloved family and friends.

Vera’s spirit will forever live among and within us, and it is with that in mind and in honoring her wishes, no formal memorial services will be held. Instead, in the coming days, weeks, months, and years, look to the open heavens, think of her, and smile.

Per Vera’s request, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to United Way of Reno County, and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502. Hutchinson Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Barbara Joann Williams, 71, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. She was born January 17, 1952 in Hutchinson, KS to Kenneth and Verna (Strayer) Wingert.

Barb graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1970 and went on to attend business school at Salt City Business College. She worked for the Hutchinson Clinic for many years, and was a well-known fixture in various roles. Barb’s greatest love was for her grandchildren. One of Barb’s favorite activities was line-dancing to country music - especially Alan Jackson! Barb took any opportunity to travel and adored both the mountains and the beach. Barb was not one to sit around, she kept herself busy crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren, crafting, quilting, walking, cooking for the family, or relaxing with her dog, Myleigh.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Verna; sisters, Karen Drassen and Janice Wingert; brother, William Wingert; and brother-in-law Larry Drassen.

She is survived by her three children, Joshua Webb and his wife, Dana, Bryan Webb, and Megan Webb and her fiancé, Dylan Green; two sisters, Cindy Wingert and Teresa Cofer; three grandchildren, Taiden Glenn, Taylor Glenn, and Tage Green; her cherished dog, Myleigh; beloved friend and kidney donor, Donna VanNordstrand; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 18th, 2023 at 3pm at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502, with Reverend Charles R. Crumble, Sr. officiating. Memorial donations are suggested to the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation, and can be sent in care of the funeral home.
