HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The sound of whistles echoing through Gowans Stadium on Aug. 1 means one thing, football is back.

Hutchinson Community College held its first official practice of the 2024 season on Thursday morning.

"It's good to be back out here No. 1," head coach Drew Dallas said. "We put a lot of work into it this offseason, throughout the summer, so just getting back out, getting on the turf, kind of going at that next level of tempo and scheme and those kind of things has been really fun with this group of guys."

Dallas liked the pace and tempo his group showed on the first day.

"Very pleased with where we're at after day one," Dallas said. "I thought our guys were attentive, there was a lot of attention to detail, there was great effort and great attitudes. "I think it's a starting point and it's going to be fun to watch them continue to progress as we go."

The Blue Dragons look to defend their KJCCC title this fall after being selected as the preseason favorite last Friday.&nbsp;

HutchCC will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 29 at home against New Mexico Military Institute. The Blue Dragons and Broncos have met three previous times in program history, the last coming in the 2009 Salt City Bowl, a 22-14 Blue Dragon win.

🏈 Blue Dragons open 2024 season with first practice Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded Thursday morning to the 700 block of West 17th for a report of a structure fire. 

Dispatch information advised of a small explosion and smoke showing from a small single-family residential dwelling. 

First arriving crews found smoke showing from the windows and glass debris in the street. Crews quickly went inside and found fire in the basement and were able to put the fire out quickly.&nbsp;

No one was home at the time of the incident and no one was hurt. The investigation continues.

Hutch Fire works in home Thursday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — School starts this month for Hutchinson USD 308 and Buhler USD 313 and the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit would like to remind motorists that school is around the corner and with that comes an increase in morning and afternoon commutes. 

Be prepared for delays and the possibilities of crashes along routes and congestion in and around schools. They would also like to remind motorists school zone speed limits are 20 mph from 7 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. - 4 p.m., and those speeding through a school zone, will have a doubled base fine amount per STO204b. Furthermore, ST081a, overtaking a school bus states that:"The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking from either direction any school bus stopped on the highway shall stop before reaching such school bus when there is in operation on the school bus the flashing red lights specified in subsection (a) of Section 170, and the driver shall not proceed until such school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights and the stop signal arm are no longer actuated."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hutch PD issues school zone reminder

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of East 4th Avenue and North Plum.

In 1914, brothers Ike and Mike Katz started a drug store in Kansas City and gradually expanded it to 65 stores at its peak.

In 1968, they expanded into Hutchinson at 401 E. 4th and called it Katz Discount City. The first photo shows the iconic signage being raised.

In 1972, Katz merged with the Skaggs store chain and the Katz name went away.

In 1984, Skaggs merged with Osco and the Skaggs name went away.

In 2005, Osco transitioned into the CVS Pharmacy group and the Hutchinson store closed. The property essentially sat vacant until 2016 when the Planet Fitness group opened up. The second photo shows that at opening.

In 2021, the Dillons fuel stations opened up another location in the large parking lot property.

Now, in 2024, Dollar Tree has opened up another location on the south end of the building, making the facility a busy full-house again! The third photo shows the property at 401 E. 4th today, which is now owned by Hutchinson Plum L.L.C. out of Wichita.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Katz Discount City - Vol. 81

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local author Dakotah Sanders will be holding a signing on Friday for his newly published book "ENDURE: To Suffer With Patience." The event begins at 6 p.m. at Milestone Clubhouse 206 N. Main St.

The book is a memoir about Sanders' battle through addiction, while also talking about the strength and courage of battling through a dark place.

"My book is about my development into addiction," Sanders said. "I think society has a very black and white view of what addiction is. It's so much more complex than that."

As a child, Sanders didn't know if he would be here today.

"I score a nine out of 10 on the ACES test," Sanders said. "That study can predict with great accuracy the trajectory of your life, giving the experiences you had as a child. I grew up with a lot of abuse from multiple people, and that really shaped my identity, my ways of thinking, and my relationship with the world. I started using drugs at the age of eight and that ran its course until I was 25, so 2017."

Sanders says he was at rock bottom, but has been able to turn his life around and become a light to so many people.

"I feel like its a built-in responsibility when you make it to the other side," Sanders said. "The messenger matters. If somebody who hasn't been in those shoes and walked that path, it's very difficult to listen to them, because you feel very alone and isolated. For somebody who has walked in those shoes, the weight of the words spoken from that messenger matters."

Sanders didn't realize how his book would touch hearts of others the way it has.

"People don't like to talk about the things I put in my book, especially men," Sanders said. "I've had several people reach out and say they can't even get through half of the book without having to stop, because it makes them so emotional and they'll have tears running down their face."

The fact of writing a book about his past was never something Sanders ever imagined he would do.

"I really wrote the book on accident," Sanders said. "I decided I was going to write something and it had no purpose. I was just kind of thinking a philosophical format, but it came out kind of cool. I got a hold of my fourth grade teacher that had given me a lot of compliments about my writing when I was younger. She told me she's now the president of the Authors Club for the local district. After I completed the book in three months, I got ahold of her and it kind of just grew itself and took off."

The process of coming up with a title for the book was easy for Sanders.

"I actually have 'ENDURE' tattooed on my stomach," Sanders said. "In addiction you watch a lot of your friends die, I've been to more funerals than I've been to weddings. I have the ability to endure great suffering, so I got that tattooed as a tribute to my friends that have passed away. When I wrote the book, the title was already built in and it was there."

Sanders says he plans to write another book, as well.

"This is only part one of two," Sanders said. "This is the development of my addiction, and there will be a second one coming out, as well."

Local author to hold book signing Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Casey Swarts came to the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday to talk to them about the Monday planning meeting where the county planning commission sent them a recommendation not to ban solar in the zoned areas of the county.

"As a leader of the opposition to the ban, I was surprised that leading up to the hearing, when I spoke with groups or individuals about the subject almost universally, the reaction was that people had no idea a ban was in the works," Swartz said. "When I informed them of what was happening, the reply was usually why on earth would anybody ban solar energy? In national surveys, over 60% of the population in general support solar energy and our younger people supported at rates approaching 75%. However, most residents are unaware of the solar regulation process playing out in Reno County. My goal has been to make them aware. Next, comments made by some county commissioners in the past have focused on how the majority of county residents wanted commercial solar banned in Reno County. I presented a petition to the planning commission hearing this last Monday night with signatures from 93 Reno County residents, opposing a ban on commercial solar in the zoned area of Reno County. Also, residents provided written and verbal testimony to our planning commission, opposing a ban on commercial solar in the zoned area of Reno County."

Swarts does believe solar needs to be regulated, and even has a section on regulations at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.factualsolar.com/regulation">https://www.factualsolar.com/regulation</a>&nbsp;to talk about it.

"I've spoken several times to the leader of the opposition to commercial solar farms in our county. I do not think we are all that far apart on our views. We both want what's best for the county and to protect the land. I think there's room for compromise and common sense mitigation steps in our regulations, and I think our planning commission is tuned into this and ready to provide leadership. As a side note, I highly encourage our planners to adopt a strong preference for developers who commit to low impact solar farm design principles."

Swarts understands that the final decision lies with the Board of County Commissioners as the elected governing body.

"I ask that you please do not override your planning commission with a super majority vote and indiscriminately ban commercial solar in the zoned areas of Reno County," Swarts said. "I ask that you trust your planning commission to do their jobs. Please let them develop responsible, effective and fair commercial solar farm regulations that will protect and benefit every resident."

Those regulations still need to be written through the planning commission process, assuming the County Commission does not override the recommendation of the planning board.

Swarts comments on solar meeting before county commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The water agreement to mitigate the nitrate issue in Yoder Water District 101 was approved by the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday.

"There's a average amount of, I wanna say 32,000 gallons that we acquire the right to buy that from them at their price," said county counselor Patrick Hoffman. Yoder water deal done

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Recreation Commission announces the hiring of a new Nature Education Coordinator at Dillon Nature Center.

Rebecca McElroy&nbsp;started at Hutch Rec as the Nature Education Coordinator at Dillon Nature Center on July 15. She comes to Hutch Rec with experience in conservation and wildlife, as she has spent most of her professional career in zookeeping at various zoos across the state. McElroy graduated from Kansas State University and received a bachelor’s of science degree in conservation and wildlife biology. She also received an associate’s degree in zoo animal technology from Santa Fe College.

In her role at Hutch Rec, McElroy assures sufficient and quality nature education and outdoor recreation programs through planning, organizing, and coordinating programs for all ages at the nature center, area schools, and various sites. McElroy offices at Dillon Nature Center, located at 3002 E. 30th&nbsp;Avenue in Hutchinson.

“I am thrilled to begin this new adventure at Dillon Nature Center,” McElroy says. “I look forward to creating new and exciting learning opportunities that will inspire and engage the community to be their own versions of conservation warriors.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Freddy's Frozen Custard &amp; Steakburgers teamed up with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) and Special Olympics Kansas for the annual "Custard with Cops" fundraiser on July 25 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

According to Andrew Soule with the Torch Run, the event made $3300 across the state from the Freddy's contribution, not counting any additional donations.

Freddy's donated 15% of all sales to Special Olympics Kansas during that period. Additionally, law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes were present at participating locations, collecting extra donations to further support their mission of empowering athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports.

The Monarchs went into the fifth inning trailing 3-0, and only accounting for one hit. That changed quickly, as Liberal made a pitching change to start the frame.

Hutchinson sent 15 to the plate, recording nine hits, and three extra base hits. Two of the three extra base hits were doubles by Jaden Gustafson. Gustafson scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.&nbsp;

The win keeps the Monarchs alive in the tournament, while the Bee Jays' season is complete. Hutchinson will play the Santa Barbara Foresters on Thursday in a rematch of the 2023 finals, won by the Monarchs. First pitch will be at 6pm.

Liberal struck first in the second inning on a bases loaded walk with two outs. Monarchs pitcher Kamden Edge retired the first two he faced in the inning, but then struggled. Edge walked three of the next four he faced and hit a batter, as well.

The Monarchs scored four more in the top of the seventh. Camden Johnson led the inning off with a triple, then was brought in on an RBI single by Brett Smajstrla. Will Edmunson also contributed in the inning with a double, and then an RBI single by Reese Ratchford.

Gustafson and Johnson each had three hits apiece to lead the Monarchs. Gustafson drove in a team-high three, as well.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A play with music based on the ancient fable of Androcles and the Lion is at Stage 9 this week.

"The writer is Aurand Harris and the music is by Glenn Mack," said Kris Anshutz with Stage 9.&nbsp; "They put it, set it in Commedia dell'arte, which was in Italy in the 15 and 1600s, and it was a traveling troupe, and they acted from a scenario, so it was all improv, so that's kind of included. It takes place in Rome, but it, everybody's dressed in Elizabethan-type costumes."

There are six people in the cast. Androcles is Mariana Inchauriga, the Lion is Jacob Lemonds, Pantalone is Diane Roth, Lelio is Abby Lemonds, Isabella is Rachel Hein and the Captain is Keely Schmidt. Josh Morris is directing. Cassidy Ghere is the stage manager.

"One way to think of it is to think of a 30-minute sitcom, because you have all these stock characters. You have the tricky slave, which is the, you know, the guy who likes to play pranks on everybody. You have the miser, and you have the young lover, so you, and you have the braggart who brags and thinks he's so great, but he's really scared."

KCC to hold Evergy meeting Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Dozens of people showed up to the community engagement meeting with the City of Hutchinson held at Stringer Fine Arts Center on Tuesday evening, July 30.

"We're pretty excited," said City of Hutchinson Director of Strategic Growth Dave Sotelo. "With things like this, you never really know what to expect. I'm pretty pleased with the turnout and the work that the staff did to get this project going. It's been something we've been thinking about for a while and finally bringing it to fruition, something we've continued to do for a while. Sotelo said the challenge will be making sure that the city actually listens to what people have to say.

"People are really hungry for more avenues to communicate and connect with people, with their elected officials and city officials, so I think that's one thing," Sotelo said. "The other part of this is that, you know, when you think about a town hall meeting, you think about boring speeches from politicians and city officials, and you think about one person complaining about, oh, there's too many stray dogs in our community, and they spend 45 minutes talking about that. What we want to do is that every voice, through a sticky note, has the same level of value, right? So we're really trying to add some democracy here to kind of what people have to say, which is something I really care about. I have nightmares about people talking for 45 minutes at a community meeting. That's not what we want here. We want, you know, people to really engage with us through this method."

The intent is to have more of these meetings in the coming months and to move them around the city.

All city department heads were present and each had a role in talking to community members about their concerns. There were more sticky notes on the sheets posted around the room than the city typically gets public input speakers in months for a regular council meeting.

Community engagement meeting shows interest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Family Community Theatre is hosting its first-ever Spotlight Gala on Saturday, August 3 at the Cosmosphere.&nbsp;

The gala will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and musical entertainment at 7 p.m. There will also be a silent auction which begins on Friday, August 2 at 10 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. The evening ends with a live auction at 8:15 p.m.&nbsp;

"We're really looking forward to this weekend," event chairperson Haley West said. "There will be a lot of entertainment, plus several local caterers. We will have about 10 live auction items for those attending, as well."

Tickets for the evening are $50 for an individual ticket, or you may purchase a table for eight for $500. Tickets may be purchased in advanced by clicking <a href="https://familycommunitytheatre.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/SpotlightGala2024/EVENTTICKETS/tabid/1490014/Default.aspx">here</a>.&nbsp;

"You can also purchase your tickets at the door on Saturday," West said. "We've sold around 100 tickets so far, and the space can seat up to 150, so there still is plenty of tickets available."

Proceeds from the event will help with renovations for the restrooms in the lobby of the Flag Theatre. The goal for the event is to raise $100,000.

"In 2022 we did the Phase I, which was the lobby renovations," West said. "We have all of our art deco theme in the lobby, and now we're moving on to Phase II, which is the lobby restrooms. That will include men's restroom, women's restroom and family restroom. They have not been touched since the 1930s."

If you wish to be an advertiser for the event, you can do so for $150. Advertisers for the event will appear on the event website, recognized during the event itself, and a logo will be rotating online through the bidding items.&nbsp;

Family Community Theatre is a mainstay to the city of Hutchinson and the surrounding communities.

"We are now in our 36th season," Family Community Theatre board president Craig Williams said. "We started at the Flag Theatre in 1992, when we purchased it, and our first show was Romeo and Juliet. We have had around 224 shows on our stage at the Flag Theatre, and that does not count for all of the children's show or the melodramas, or the murder mysteries we have done."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In honor of an upcoming exhibit on the Vietnam conflict "I Walked into a Different World - The Vietnam Era Remembered,” set to open at the Reno County Museum in March, we are reaching out to our community for support in obtaining artifacts from that era. The Reno County Historical Society will use these items to create a special exhibit to commemorate and educate the public about this significant period in history.

We are asking for donations of memorabilia including, but not limited to:

Field Uniforms: Including jackets, trousers, helmets, and combat boots. All will be welcomed and appreciated.

Field Gear: Including medical equipment/supplies, blankets, sleeping bags or cots, mess kits, rations/MREs, machetes/knives, gas masks, cigarettes, military radios, packs/rucksacks, pouches/bandoliers, dog tags, field manuals, and weapons maintenance kits.

Aesthetic Items: Draft cards, audiotapes, letters, magazines, books and newspapers, posters, and ledgers.

Firearms and Weaponry: MUST BE BROKEN, INOPERABLE, TRIGGER LOCKED, OR NON-FUNCTIONING REPLICAS.

Building Materials: Wood, plywood/MDF, plexiglass/acrylic sheets, items to make prop barrels, and prop crates.

Midway wristband day is today

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission passed a recommendation on Monday night not to recommend a ban on commercial solar in the county. 

In fact, if they are going to allow commercial solar, they would still need to write regulations for that, as that process was halted at the direction of the Board of County Commissioners earlier in the process.

Ultimately, if the Board of County Commissioners wants to do something other than approve the recommendation as sent to them by the planning commission, they would need to have four votes out of five to deny the recommendation and those same four votes to approve what they want to do instead, whatever it is, unless they want to send it back to planning again. Sending it back only takes three votes.

There is no word yet on when that recommendation will come before the Board of County Commissioners.

Planning commission leaves commercial solar door open

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — According to a social media post from Moundridge police, a 14-month old was rescued Sunday afternoon.

 </figure>MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — According to a social media post from Moundridge police, a 14-month old was rescued Sunday afternoon.Just before 2 p.m., Moundridge police, fire and EMS were called to a report of a juvenile needing assistance. The child was trapped underground inside a PVC pipe. The pipe was about 12 inches in diameter and 10-12 feet deep. The child was apparently uninjured and upright in the bottom of the pipe.Emergency crews worked for 15-20 minutes to recover the child. Officer Wagner constructed a makeshift 'catch pole'.
