Emancipation Day Celebration this weekend in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 135th Emancipation Day Celebration in Hutchinson will take place this weekend, Aug. 1-4.

The celebration begins on Thursday with a lecture about understanding the difference between Emancipation Day and Juneteenth. This will begin at 6 p.m. at the Reno County Museum. 

There will be a Family Fun Night on Friday at Rice Park beginning at 5 p.m. with activities such as a picnic dinner, children's games, and music by "620 In The Mix."

The evening is capped off by Jazz in the Park with Rudy Love Jr. beginning at 8 p.m. at Avenue A Park.

Saturday begins with the Emancipation Day Parade at 10 a.m. The parade route will go north on Main Street beginning at Avenue A and ending at 12th Avenue. The parade marshal is Sean James. 

The public is then invited to attend activities at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of HutchCC beginning at 12 p.m. There will also be a free community picnic available and music provided by the George Sanders Band.

The Emancipation Dance will begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Knights of Columbus building. The music will be provided by "620 In The Mix."

The celebration weekend comes to a close on Sunday afternoon with Gospelfest and an ice cream social at 3 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center.
