HUTCHINSON, Kan. — School starts this month for Hutchinson USD 308 and Buhler USD 313 and the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit would like to remind motorists that school is around the corner and with that comes an increase in morning and afternoon commutes.
Be prepared for delays and the possibilities of crashes along routes and congestion in and around schools. They would also like to remind motorists school zone speed limits are 20 mph from 7 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. - 4 p.m., and those speeding through a school zone, will have a doubled base fine amount per STO204b. Furthermore, ST081a, overtaking a school bus states that:"The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking from either direction any school bus stopped on the highway shall stop before reaching such school bus when there is in operation on the school bus the flashing red lights specified in subsection (a) of Section 170, and the driver shall not proceed until such school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights and the stop signal arm are no longer actuated."
