WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School fell to Eisenhower 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in the Class 5A regional held at Adams Field at Westurban Baseball complex.&nbsp;

The loss ends the Salthawks' season at 15-12. The Tigers advance to the regional championship game, where they will face the winner of Bishop Carroll and Goddard.

Eisenhower broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a Hutchinson error before Isiah Lyons, Christian Guerra and Colton Doll each delivered RBI hits to make it 3-0. Lyons singled to center, Guerra doubled down the left field line, and Doll followed with a single in the same direction.

Cole Adams earned the win for Eisenhower, allowing one hit and two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings. Adams was relieved with two outs in the top of the seventh after throwing the maximum number of pitches allowed. He struck out seven and walked three. 

Jack Davis took the loss for Hutchinson, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Caiden Beavers drove in one of Hutchinson’s two runs. Jack Yoder had the Salthawks’ only hit, going 1-for-3. The one hit recorded by the Salthawks ended a stretch of 15 1/3 innings without a hit going back to the second game of a doubleheader against Maize.&nbsp;

Eisenhower totaled nine hits, with Lyons and Doll each collecting two. Lyons, Guerra and Doll each recorded an RBI.

⚾ Salthawks fall in regional semifinal to Tigers

The Hutchinson YMCA branch is seeing exciting developments both on and off the construction site, as Branch Director David Foster shared in his monthly update on the BW Morning Show on Wednesday morning.

The new YMCA facility, currently under construction just south of 23rd and Lorraine, is making significant progress. "There's a lot of dirt and concrete work going on," Foster said. "As of last week, we had poured the equivalent of four football fields of concrete, and that number is still growing."

In addition to footings and pool excavation, the installation of light pole bases and preparation for the new parking lot are underway. Foster has been keeping the community updated through social media videos under the “Behind the Fence” series. Drone footage, including shots from local videographer Nick Hemphill, will eventually be compiled to document the project from start to finish.

But even as the new facility rises, the current location at 716 E. 13th Ave. remains a hub of activity with summer promotions and programming in full swing.

Summer Membership Deal and Sports Sign-Ups

A summer membership promotion is now active through June 3, waiving the $75 joiner fee. “It’s a great opportunity to get involved, especially for families looking for kids’ activities,” Foster said. “Believe it or not, June is typically a busier month for new memberships than even January.”

Registration is also open for summer sports, including dodgeball (through June 2) and tackle football (through July 8). Member and non-member pricing is available, with substantial discounts for members.

Foster also highlighted the YMCA360 app, a virtual fitness platform created by the Greater Wichita YMCA and now used nationwide. “You can access workouts on your phone, TV, or tablet—whether you’re at home or traveling,” he said.

⚾🥎 Hutch Post-area regional schedule for Wednesday

The Hutchinson City Council approved a zone change Tuesday night for a 14-acre site at the northeast corner of 36th Avenue and Monroe Street, shifting it from an R-3 Moderate Density Residential District to an R-5 High Density Residential District.

The rezoning, case number ZA25-04, had been tabled during the May 6 council meeting. Community Development Director Matthew Williams updated the council on revisions to the ordinance, including a protective overlay limiting the site to single-family residential use.

A tentative layout proposes lots ranging from 6,500 to 20,000 square feet, with two access points connecting to Monroe Street.

Williams explained the platting process, which involves subdividing the land into smaller parcels for development. Preliminary and final plats will be reviewed by the planning commission, allowing for public comment before returning to the city council for final approval.

Gilbert Properties LLC is the applicant for the site, with Garver LLC serving as the engineer. Kenneth Lee of Garver said infrastructure design will follow final plat approval, with the city overseeing construction and lot owners responsible for special assessments.

The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at City Hall, 125 East Avenue B.

INMAN, Kan. — A six-run second inning powered the Inman Teutons to an 8-1 victory over Bennington on Tuesday, securing a spot in the Class 2-1A state softball tournament.

Inman advances to the state tournament, which will be held May 29-30 at the Green Sports Complex in Pratt. They enter the state tournament with a 22-1 record.

The Teutons outscored their three opponents in regional play, 36-3.

Ellie Thimmesch led the Teutons at the plate, going 3-for-3 with singles in the second, fifth and seventh innings. Inman racked up 14 hits overall, with Maddi Parsons also collecting three and both Taylor Froese and Adi Alcala recording multiple hits.

In the decisive second inning, Marlee Ballard drove in a run with a single, Allison Schrag cleared the bases with a three-run double, Alexis Noone added a sacrifice fly, and Sharley Leonhardt executed a sacrifice bunt to bring home another run.

Parsons added an RBI single in the third inning, while Noone and Schrag finished with two RBIs each.

Lyla Levin earned the win in the circle for Inman, allowing six hits and one run over seven innings. She struck out seven and walked none.

Bennington was led by Brooklyn Clark and Gracie Caswell, who each collected two hits. Clark drove in the Bulldogs' lone run. Haylee Blake took the loss, allowing eight runs on 14 hits over seven innings.

⚾🥎 Hutch Post-area regional scoreboard for Tuesday

McPHERSON, Kan. — A five-run first inning powered the McPherson Bullpups to a 9-2 victory over Mulvane in a Class 4A regional championship game Tuesday, securing a spot in the state tournament.

McPherson advances to the Class 4A state tournament, scheduled for May 29-30 at Salina South High School. The Bullpups will be the No. 1 seed in the state tournament, as they're the lone unbeaten team in Class 4A.

The Bullpups jumped out early as Addie Herrera delivered an RBI single, and Rylie Whitfield, Kynedi Huggard, Ashlyn Schroeder and Addison Chapman each drew bases-loaded walks to give McPherson a 5-0 lead.

Chapman added an RBI groundout in the third inning, and Carmin Pavlovich crushed a two-run home run to center in the fourth to extend the Bullpups’ lead.

Chapman earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four hits and two runs over seven innings, while striking out six and walking five.

McPherson collected 11 hits. Herrera, Huggard, Haely Hagemann and Pavlovich each recorded two hits, while Chapman and Schroeder drove in two runs apiece. The Bullpups walked 10 times, including three by Chapman.

Regan Witt led Mulvane at the plate, going 2-for-4. Gracyn Crow and Bailey Hall each recorded an RBI. Blake Ferraro drew three of Mulvane’s five walks.

Mulvane starter Sophie Bruce was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on one hit and seven walks in two-thirds of an inning.

The Bullpups defeated Clay Center, 14-4, in the regional semifinal.

Bengtson doubled in the second inning, singled in the fourth and added another base hit in the fifth as part of McPherson’s seven-hit effort. The Bullpups took the lead in the second when Brenden Doile hit into a fielder’s choice that scored a run.

Ian Razak earned the win on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits, struck out seven and walked three. Carter Allen closed out the final 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing no hits and one walk.

Brody Seidl added two hits for McPherson.

Jacob Miller accounted for all three of Buhler’s hits, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Brayden Henry took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing six runs,&nbsp; three earned, while striking out six over six innings with no walks.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School girls soccer team opened postseason play with a 7-2 victory over Goddard on Tuesday evening at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Salthawks improved to 11-6-0 and advanced to the Class 5A regional championship game. They will travel to face Maize South at 7 p.m. Thursday in Maize. Maize South earned its spot with a 12-0 win over Ark City on Monday.

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High’s Mitchell Rice earned a runner-up finish at the Class 5A regional boys golf tournament Tuesday at Auburn Hills Golf Course, carding an 8-over-par 80 to advance to the state tournament.

Rice finished five strokes behind Maize South’s Laken Matthews, who claimed medalist honors with a 75.

Hutchinson’s Alex Haas also qualified for state, placing 14th with a 90 as one of the top five individual finishers not on a top-three team.

Maize South, the regional host, dominated the team standings with a 320 to win by 55 strokes. Great Bend finished second at 375, followed by Salina South at 377. Hutchinson and Hays tied for fourth at 378.

Landyn Powell finished in a tie for 17th for the Salthawks, narrowly missing the individual cut.

The Cougars won the Goessel Regional by a commanding 56 strokes, posting a team score of 331. St. John-Hudson finished second at 387, with Ellis placing third at 403.

Sophomore Cael Kooiman led the way for Central Christian, claiming individual medalist honors with a 6-over-par 77. He edged his older brother, senior Ryland Kooiman, by three strokes.

Senior Nathan Reed added a fifth-place finish with an 85, while freshman Tyler Reed placed eighth after carding an 89.

Senior Tarren Scripsick finished 23rd with a 108, and senior Brody Froese finished 26th with a 110.

Pretty Prairie sophomore Braden Woods finished 33rd overall with a 125.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person has died following a fire Tuesday morning at the Store'N Go storage facility near 4th Avenue and Bonebrake Street, according to the Hutchinson Fire Department.

Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. after the Hutchinson Police Department, already on scene, reported visible smoke. Upon arrival, firefighters found one of eight 30-by-220-foot storage buildings filled with smoke. Crews forced entry into multiple units, cutting locks and doors, and launched an aggressive attack on four units actively burning.

While extinguishing the flames, firefighters discovered one deceased individual inside a unit that appeared to be used as a residence. The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. The Reno County Coroner’s Medical Investigator is working to determine the cause of death and make a positive identification. Next of kin will be notified once the identity is confirmed.

The fire caused moderate damage to four units, with smoke damage affecting approximately 75% of the remaining compartments. No injuries to firefighters were reported. Crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department’s Fire Marshal.

The property owner has been notified and will contact tenants of the affected units.

Hutchinson Fire expressed appreciation to partner agencies including Evergy, Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County EMS, the Reno County Coroner’s Office, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications, and Hutchinson Public Works.

LUCAS, Kan. — Tim Rhodes went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run to help lead the Hesston Swathers to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Beloit on Monday evening to punch their ticket back to the Class 3A state tournament.

The Swathers qualify for state with a 16-6 record, while the Trojans end their season with a 12-9 mark.

Rhodes doubled in the first and third innings before launching a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to end the game. The Swathers finished with nine hits, including a two-run home run by Andrew Huxman in the third inning and an RBI single by Blayne Wilson in the fifth.

Brody Curran was dominant on the mound, striking out 10 while allowing just two hits in a five-inning complete game. He did not issue a walk.

Hesston opened the scoring with a pair of sacrifice flies in the second inning, including one from Landen Meyer. In the third, Levi Flaming delivered an RBI double ahead of Huxman’s two-run blast to extend the lead to 5-0.

Flaming went 2-for-2, while Rhodes, Huxman and Curran each drove in two runs. Defensively, Hesston turned a double play and committed no errors. Meyer led the team with 10 chances in the field.

Beloit starter Brooks Dunstan took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings. Paxton Fouts and Ashton Bletscher each recorded a hit for the Trojans.

Hesston defeated Minneapolis and Halstead prior to their win over Beloit, while Beloit beat Nickerson and Ellsworth.

The Class 3A state tournament will be held May 30-31 at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler High School’s girls soccer team opened the postseason in dominant fashion, blanking Winfield 8-0 on Monday night at Crusader Stadium.

The Crusaders improved to 12-5-0 with the win, while the Vikings ended their season at 0-16-1.

Alyssa Berner, Mikaela Jarrett and Kennedee Applegate each scored twice for Buhler. Juliette Shank and Madi McCool each added a goal to round out the scoring.

Jarrett led the team with three assists, while Zoey Dick, Kenzie Polk, Berner and Nicole Anselmo each contributed one.

The victory marked Buhler’s 10th shutout of the season. The Crusaders will host the winner of Tuesday’s Wichita Collegiate vs. Mulvane matchup in the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m. in Buhler.

McPHERSON, Kan. — Buhler captured the Class 4A regional golf championship on Monday at Turkey Creek Golf Course, edging out a competitive field behind a balanced team effort and a clutch playoff performance from senior Zach Chance.

Buhler posted a team score of 321 to secure the regional title. Clearwater’s low total of 101 did not count in the team standings due to having just two golfers. Pratt and Concordia tied for second at 332, but the Greenbacks earned the runner-up trophy by virtue of the better fifth score, Hudson Rector's 89, compared to Concordia's Baylor Knox with a 96.

Zach Chance led the Crusaders with an 2-over-par 72 and claimed medalist honors after winning a two-hole playoff over Abilene’s Aaron Hartman. Buhler also received top-15 finishes from Drew DeMeyer (79), Isaiah Heredia (85), Nick Chance (85), and James Dingler (85), while Jace Heimerman rounded out the team score with an 89.

Pratt’s Grant McAtee was third individually with a 73, followed by Quinton Humble (84), Beau Ferrell (87), Mathew Garnett (88), and Rector (89).

McPherson finished fourth in the team standings with a 340. Cole Cooper led the Bullpups with a 76, good for fourth place individually and a state qualification as one of the top five individual finishers not on a qualifying team. Paxton Ingels added an 85, Hudson Krehbiel shot 88, Kameron Buckbee posted 91, and Lawson Ediger carded a 99. Teigan Younger shot 107.

Despite Meireis’ standout round of 79, the Eagles narrowly missed qualifying as a team, finishing fourth with a 361, just two strokes behind the final qualifying spot.

Cheney captured the team title with a 347, followed by Hoisington (358) and Garden Plain (359) to round out the state qualifiers. The top three teams from each of the four regional tournaments advance to next week’s state championship.

Meireis earned one of five individual state berths awarded to golfers not on advancing teams. Kingman also received scoring contributions from Chaz Snyder (88), Will McBeth (91), Jace Sasina (103) and Malachi Graber (116).

Lyons placed sixth in the team standings with a 424. Noah Geeves led the Lions with a 94, while Landon Ankerhol shot 97, Easten Benevide 116, Robert Beitler 117, Lucas Timberlake 124 and Diego Cabral 132.

Haven was not in team contention but was led by Kyler Nikkel’s 103. Kolton Altvater added a 105 and Jacob Myers shot 112.

SALINA, Kan. — Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic punched its ticket to the Class 2A state boys golf tournament with a runner-up finish Monday at the Sacred Heart regional held at Salina Municipal Golf Course. 

The Celtics shot a team total of 319, finishing behind perennial power Salina Sacred Heart (307) and ahead of third-place Ellinwood (355) to secure one of three team qualifying spots.

The Class 2A state tournament will be held May 27-28 at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

⛳ Trinity Catholic advances to state with runner-up finish at 2A regional

PLEVNA, Kan. — A tornado struck the tiny Reno County community of Plevna late Sunday night, leaving behind widespread damage and prompting a community-wide cleanup effort Monday morning.

Vonda Zongker, who lives just north of Plevna, described a chaotic night as the storm tore through homes, vehicles and landmarks in and around the town.

“Right now what the city of Plevna could use is porta pottys,” Zongker said. “Everybody’s got their own wells, and we have no electricity, no water, no bathrooms.”

At least four homes are believed to be destroyed — three in the immediate Plevna area and one closer to the community of Zenith. Numerous other structures were also damaged or destroyed, including the town’s Plevna Community Bible Church and its parsonage.

“The church in Plevna has a lot of damage, most of the roof is gone. The parsonage is, I’m sure, a total wipeout and will have to be rebuilt,” Zongker said.

The tornado also demolished a neighbor’s shed and totaled the vehicles that were stored inside. Their house, Zongker added, is “pretty well totaled.”

Zongker said the twister passed between her home and a neighbor’s to the east, just a mile apart, shortly after they had left each other’s homes.

“A lot of damage, and we could use a lot of prayers out here,” she said. “A lot of people are struggling.”

Emergency crews and residents are currently assessing the damage and beginning cleanup efforts. No injuries had been reported as of midmorning, but officials were still working to evaluate the full impact of the storm.

The National Weather Service has not yet released an official damage rating for the tornado.
