Thirty-one minutes into Wednesday's Jayhawk Conference women's soccer game between Hutchinson Community College and Dodge City, Mother Nature decided to intervene.

With the No. 13-ranked Blue Dragons leading 3-1 at Don Michael Field, the game went into a weather delay with 10:19 remaining in the first half and was ultimately suspended.

The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex, but moved to the turf field at Don Michael and pushed back to 7 p.m. because of heavy rains in the Hutchinson area early Wednesday.

No date for the resumption of the game has been set yet. The Blue Dragons (4-1) plays host to Seward County at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Dodge City took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a goal from Mette Battling on the Conquistadors' first shot attempted of the game.

The Blue Dragons then scored three unanswered goals to build a 3-1 lead.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/tamaki_olivia_seh8">Olivia Tamaki</a>&nbsp;scored in the 17th minute to tie the game on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/simpson_bessie_i938">Bessie Simpson</a>&nbsp;assist. She gave the Dragons the lead with her second goal of the game and fifth of the season on an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/puccinelli_isabela_fmo3">Isabela Puccinelli</a>&nbsp;assist in the 26th minute.

The Dragons took a 3-1 lead when Puccinelli took a long Ana Pokrandt pass and scored from 20-yards out in the 31st minute.

⚽ Weather forces suspension of HutchCC-Dodge City game

With one race and one team title under its belt, the Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team remained No. 4 in the first regular-season USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I national rankings of the season.

The Blue Dragons are one of three Jayhawk Conference teams in the Top 10 of the latest poll released on Wednesday. Butler is No. 7 and Garden City is No. 10. Colby is the fourth KJCCC team in the rankings at No. 16.

Hutchinson runs in its first 8K race of the season on Saturday, competing in the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Missouri.

The Blue Dragons last ran on August 30 when they dominated the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. Blue Dragon runners finished in the top four spots led by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kogo_cornelius_a3hy">Cornelius Kogo</a>.

Last season the Blue Dragons won both the Region 6 and Jayhawk West championships and finished third in the NJCAA Division I National Championships.

Heading into its first 5K race of the season on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team has joined the Top 10 of the USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I Women's Cross Country national rankings.

⚽ Hutchinson-Dodge City game moved to 7 p.m. at Don Michael Field

The Reno County Extension Master Gardeners and Reno County-K-State Extension invite the public to enjoy an evening of music, learning, and community at the Music in the Garden event on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The event will take place at the Reno County Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden, located on the Hutchinson Community College campus. Guests will have the chance to explore the garden, learn about plants that thrive in the area, and ask questions of Extension Master Gardener volunteers, who will be on hand beginning at 5:30 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m., live music will fill the pavilion as Dr. Jack Cassidy, Jazz Coordinator at Hutchinson Community College, performs. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, as seating will be limited. Guests are also welcome to pack a picnic and enjoy the music while they dine in the garden setting.

The event is free and open to the public.

WACO, Texas &ndash; Freshman Grant Hatzerbuehler earned his first collegiate Top 10 finish and the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team earned a fourth-place finish in the fall season opener at the Waco River Classic on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons got off to a sizzling start in the third round on Tuesday at Bear Ridge Golf Course, playing the first 10 holes in 8-under par. Unable to hold that blistering pace, the Dragons still shot their best team round of the tournament at 291 (+3) and finished with a 54-hole score of 882, 12 shots behind team champion McLennan.
Hatzerbuehler was at 6-under for the final round through 10 holes, but back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 slowed him down. Hatzerbuehler finished with his first collegiate under-par round of 70 &ndash; tallying six birdies and four bogeys &ndash; and tied for eighth 1-under 215 for the tournament. He shot rounds of 73 and 72 on Monday.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/duquaine_hugo_o1wf">Hugo Duquaine</a>&nbsp;just missed the Top 10 with a tie for 11th place. Duquaine carded a 74 and finished at 4-over 220.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/northgraves_jack_xzbb">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;tied for 22nd at 223, tying his tournament low round of 73 on Tuesday.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/gibb_ronnie_uf6d">Ronnie Gibb</a>&nbsp;had a 74 in the final round and finished at 10-over 226 for a tie for 41st.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hewlett_mark_9cke">Mark Hewlett</a>&nbsp;had a 77 in the final round and tied for 55th-place at 231.
Both Blue Dragon individuals had strong final rounds on Tuesday.
Freshman Matt Vearnecombe jumped 12 places in the standings to tie for 12th at 4-over 220. He shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/austin_joe_x3hk">Joe Austin</a>&nbsp;had an eagle on the 515-yard par-5 16th hole to highlight his round of 73. He tied for 34th at 226.
McLennan shot a team 287 to jump two spots into the top spot for the tournament, shooting a 54-hole team round of 870. Midland was second at 872 after a 288 on Tuesday. Day 1 leader Weatherford shot a third-straight 291 and placed third at 73.
McLennan's Abe Bignell shot a tournament low 66 on Tuesday to win individual honors by five strokes with a total of 208.
The Blue Dragons play next Monday and Tuesday in the Bent Tree Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

⛳ Hatzerbuehler leads Dragons to 4th-place finish at Waco River

Brenda Kretzer-Kowitz, 69, of Hutchinson died September 13, 2025, at Hospice House. She was born on December 2, 1955, in Hutchinson, to Bobbie L. Kretzer and Barbara Lee (Bell) Carithers.

Brenda graduated from Nickerson High School in 1972; and attended Hutchinson Community College. In 1998, she graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Business Management. Brenda was the assistant manager of Credit Thrift, Hutchinson, before working at Barb’s Bail Bonds as a bail bond agent for over 30 years. She later became the Reno County Treasurer, working for the county for over 12 years, prior to her retirement in 2023. Brenda was a powered parachute sport pilot as well as a certified scuba diver. She enjoyed travelling, camping and waterskiing at Beaver Lake, AR, and Wilson Lake. Brenda was the world’s best storyteller; she was able to perfectly paint the picture and describe events in great detail. She loved spending time with her dogs and parrot. Brenda was a member of Inspire Church, Hutchinson.

Brenda is survived by: her brothers, Bobbie (Kerry) Kretzer of Grove, OK, Mark (Rhoda) Kretzer and Kathy (Jerry) Shank, both of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; lifelong friend and caregiver, Phyllis Swank of Hutchinson; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Jackie Rupp-Scott; sister, Bonnie Galloway; ex-husband and friend, Eric Kowitz.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, at Inspire Church, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson, with Pastor Kent Pedersen officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday until the day of the service, at Elliott Mortuary.

Brenda Kretzer-Kowitz |1955-2025|

Mary Eileen Bauer (Mooney) passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on September 13, 2025, in Dallas, Texas with her family by her side. She was born December 11, 1941, in Wichita, Kansas, the youngest of four children, to Michael J. and Margaret Mooney (Hamilton).

Mary spent her early childhood on a farm in Stafford County. What she remembered most about her time on the farm was her favorite dog, Joe, a Newfoundland, who she adored. Around the age of five, the family home was moved to Hutchinson when her father took over the family business, Hamilton Roofing. Shortly thereafter, Mary contracted polio, and after enduring very difficult treatments, she was fortunate to have survived without lasting harm.&nbsp;

Her family was a long-time member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and later joined Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson, Kansas. Mary attended high school at St. Teresa High School where she and her older sister, Margaret Ann were cheerleaders. After graduating in 1959, she briefly attended Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to Kansas City with friends.&nbsp;

In August 1963, she married her beloved husband, Philip M. Bauer, and moved with him to Boston where they later welcomed their first child, Courtney (1966). In 1967, they settled in Dallas, Texas, where Phil began working for Collins Radio. During this time, they met John and Jackie Earls who became lifelong friends. When Phil’s career offered him an opportunity to live and work in Norway for an extended period in the mid-1970s, Mary adjusted to life overseas and enjoyed exploring and shopping throughout Norway and Sweden. They returned to Richardson, Texas, in 1975. In those years, Mary enjoyed playing tennis with Phil and friends, shopping, and raising Courtney.&nbsp;

Later, their family expanded, adding Ryan (1976) and Megan (1978), and they moved to Plano, Texas, where they would make their home for the next 48 years. Over the years the family thrived, thanks in large part to Mary's indomitable spirit, boundless love and unyielding devotion. She was always a fierce protector of her children and a source of strength for her family.&nbsp;

Mary always had a very close bond with her two older sisters that often involved late nights of endless laughing, mornings filled with coffee, cinnamon rolls and Sara Lee coffee cakes, and days on end of marathon shopping trips. Their bond was unparalleled. Mary was known for her quick wit and masterful timing, but when the three sisters were together, she was in her element – their humor and joy radiated to everyone around them. Mary’s laugh had a unique, unmistakable quality - bright, infectious and full of life, it could fill any room and lift the spirits of everyone nearby.

Mary had a gift for enjoying life and delighted in sharing the little pleasures she had discovered with her children and grandchildren. She did not hesitate to indulge them or herself whenever the opportunity arose. If it was a new Christmas decoration or if it was adding a splash of whole cream to a bowl of cereal, she seized the opportunity. She lived life to the fullest without regrets.

Mary often combined her enjoyment of shopping with her deep love of the Christmas holiday season. Those who knew her, undoubtedly knew that the magic of Christmas and the joy of the season was one of her great passions. She loved nothing more than decorating the house for Christmas, baking endless holiday treats and painstakingly fulfilling her family’s wish lists. Mary carried with her the magic of Christmas morning and made sure to give her children and grandchildren that same sense of childlike delight. &nbsp;She worked tirelessly to make every Christmas the best in every way.

Mary was a devoted wife to Phil for 62 years, a loving mother and a cherished grandmother. She prioritized family above all else. Her generosity and kindness knew no limits. As the years went on, she experienced a difficult physical decline that she endured with courage, grace and extraordinary resilience. Despite much physical difficulty, she rarely complained. In her final days, when the intensive care doctor came to deliver the results of a critical test, Mary looked at him and said softly, “You should go home – you must be tired."&nbsp; He held her hand and was visibly touched by her kindness. Mary was selfless to the very end, always more concerned with the comfort and needs of those around her than with her own.&nbsp;

She leaves behind her husband, Philip; her daughters, Courtney (Matthew) and Megan (Suzanne); her son, Ryan (Kate); grandchildren, Zoey, Siobhan, Graeme, Eiley, August and Mae; her sister, Margaret Ann Hohl; nieces, nephews and other relatives in Texas and Kansas, brother-in-law, Michael Bauer (Jeanette) and lifelong friends, John and Jacqueline Earls.

Preceding her in death are her parents, sister, Helen Louise Mullen, and brother, Michael Mooney.

Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2025, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Around the age of five, the family home was moved to Hutchinson when her father took over the family business, Hamilton Roofing. Shortly thereafter, Mary contracted polio, and after enduring very difficult treatments, she was fortunate to have survived without lasting harm.&nbsp;Her family was a long-time member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and later joined Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson, Kansas. Mary attended high school at St. Teresa High School where she and her older sister, Margaret Ann were cheerleaders. After graduating in 1959, she briefly attended Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to Kansas City with friends.&nbsp;In August 1963, she married her beloved husband, Philip M. Bauer, and moved with him to Boston where they later welcomed their first child, Courtney (1966). In 1967, they settled in Dallas, Texas, where Phil began working for Collins Radio. During this time, they met John and Jackie Earls who became lifelong friends. When Phil’s career offered him an opportunity to live and work in Norway for an extended period in the mid-1970s, Mary adjusted to life overseas and enjoyed exploring and shopping throughout Norway and Sweden. They returned to Richardson, Texas, in 1975. In those years, Mary enjoyed playing tennis with Phil and friends, shopping, and raising Courtney.&nbsp;Later, their family expanded, adding Ryan (1976) and Megan (1978), and they moved to Plano, Texas, where they would make their home for the next 48 years. Over the years the family thrived, thanks in large part to Mary's indomitable spirit, boundless love and unyielding devotion. She was always a fierce protector of her children and a source of strength for her family.&nbsp;Mary always had a very close bond with her two older sisters that often involved late nights of endless laughing, mornings filled with coffee, cinnamon rolls and Sara Lee coffee cakes, and days on end of marathon shopping trips. Their bond was unparalleled. Mary was known for her quick wit and masterful timing, but when the three sisters were together, she was in her element – their humor and joy radiated to everyone around them. Mary’s laugh had a unique, unmistakable quality - bright, infectious and full of life, it could fill any room and lift the spirits of everyone nearby.Mary had a gift for enjoying life and delighted in sharing the little pleasures she had discovered with her children and grandchildren. She did not hesitate to indulge them or herself whenever the opportunity arose. If it was a new Christmas decoration or if it was adding a splash of whole cream to a bowl of cereal, she seized the opportunity. She lived life to the fullest without regrets.Mary often combined her enjoyment of shopping with her deep love of the Christmas holiday season. Those who knew her, undoubtedly knew that the magic of Christmas and the joy of the season was one of her great passions. She loved nothing more than decorating the house for Christmas, baking endless holiday treats and painstakingly fulfilling her family’s wish lists. Mary carried with her the magic of Christmas morning and made sure to give her children and grandchildren that same sense of childlike delight. &nbsp;She worked tirelessly to make every Christmas the best in every way.Mary was a devoted wife to Phil for 62 years, a loving mother and a cherished grandmother. She prioritized family above all else. Her generosity and kindness knew no limits. As the years went on, she experienced a difficult physical decline that she endured with courage, grace and extraordinary resilience. Despite much physical difficulty, she rarely complained. In her final days, when the intensive care doctor came to deliver the results of a critical test, Mary looked at him and said softly, “You should go home – you must be tired."&nbsp; He held her hand and was visibly touched by her kindness. Mary was selfless to the very end, always more concerned with the comfort and needs of those around her than with her own.&nbsp;She will be dearly missed.&nbsp;She leaves behind her husband, Philip; her daughters, Courtney (Matthew) and Megan (Suzanne); her son, Ryan (Kate); grandchildren, Zoey, Siobhan, Graeme, Eiley, August and Mae; her sister, Margaret Ann Hohl; nieces, nephews and other relatives in Texas and Kansas, brother-in-law, Michael Bauer (Jeanette) and lifelong friends, John and Jacqueline Earls.Preceding her in death are her parents, sister, Helen Louise Mullen, and brother, Michael Mooney.Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2025, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Salley caught four balls for 106 yards against the Reivers.

Hauling in a long reception of 52 yards to get the Dragons out of a deep hole, Salley then caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/johnson_christian_b2h0">Christian Johnson</a>&nbsp;in the right corner of the end zone on third down to give the Dragons a 30-27 lead with 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Through two games, Salley has seven receptions for a team-high 180 yards and four touchdowns.

This is Salley's first career conference player of the week award.

🏈 HutchCC's Salley Jr., Haines named KJCCC players of the week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2025 Kansas State Fair drew 300,784 visitors over 10 days, a weather-affected total that trailed the 328,714 reported in 2024 and 330,044 in 2023, organizers said.

The Fair opened Sept. 5 under misty skies, followed by a strong weekend before heavy rain on Monday snarled parking. To keep the grounds accessible, officials rolled out shuttle service from Hutchinson Community College, the Hutchinson Uptown Mall and Bold 3PL.

“We are grateful to the Hutchinson community and our emergency response partners for helping us make these adjustments quickly and safely,” General Manager Bryan Schulz said. “Our staff, Fair Board, and countless supporters worked tirelessly to make this year’s Fair a success despite the weather.”

Grandstand highlights included Ludacris (6,600), Jeff Dunham (just under 6,000), Josiah Queen with Ben Fuller (5,700) and The Fray with Plain White T’s (4,400).

Fair leaders thanked fairgoers, staff, volunteers, sponsors and community partners for keeping the event a place for Kansans to make memories—rain or shine.

Kansas State Fair draws 300,784 despite rainy weather

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jim Olson spent more than 30 years living a life of secrets. On Tuesday, the former CIA counterintelligence chief talked about his long clandestine career, which was both the honor of a lifetime and a constant test of endurance.

Olson, who served in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations before becoming chief of counterintelligence at headquarters in Langley, Va., spoke at a press conference ahead of his Dillon Lecture Series appearance at Hutchinson Community College.

“Our mission is to protect the American people,” Olson said. “It was a very fulfilling thing to do. My wife and I really got a lot of satisfaction out of providing intelligence to keep the American people safer.”

He described his Cold War posting to Moscow as the dream assignment of any CIA officer, though it carried grave risks. “The consequence of getting caught would be catastrophic,” he said. “Our job was to steal Russia’s secrets on their turf, under their nose, and not get caught.” He and his wife, Meredith, underwent intensive psychological testing before the assignment. “Your apartment is bugged. You’re followed everywhere you go. You can’t talk about your work, you can’t talk about your problems. It’s a very artificial way to live,” he said. Even so, the couple believed in their mission. “We felt honored to be there and to have the opportunity to collect intelligence against our main adversary.”

Coming home required adjustment. “We couldn’t believe we could actually talk,” Olson said. “Living in a hostile environment like that is hard to get away from. Our marriage is strong, and we adjusted in due course, but it has its aftereffects. I have recurring dreams. For some reason, my dreams are being chased.”

Olson said he never planned on becoming a spy. Raised in Iowa, he studied law and expected to become a small-town attorney until the CIA reached out. “I did not apply. They found me,” he said. “Somebody spotted me, one of my professors, I think, and I got a call out of the blue. Once I got there, I realized that’s where I belonged.” He recalled being asked where he thought he could best contribute. “I liked research. I liked writing. I said I think I could help you with analysis. They were looking at all my psychological profiles and training records. They knew me better than I knew myself. They said, ‘No, you’re going to be an operator.’ It turned out they were right.”

After retiring, Olson accepted an invitation from former President George H.W. Bush to establish an intelligence studies program at Texas A&amp;M University. The move required him and his wife to come out from undercover, a step most CIA officers avoid. “Most of our people retire undercover,” Olson said. “That’s much more comfortable. You don’t have to worry about the threats. That was our plan, but it didn’t work out that way.” Leaving secrecy behind also brought new dangers. “There are really bad people out there, terrorists, narcotics traffickers, organized crime, and they’ve got long memories,” he said. “Meredith and I are always very careful. The FBI and local police have been involved several times because of threats we’ve received.”

At Texas A&amp;M, Olson said interest in intelligence careers is strong, but many students are undone by mistakes from their teenage years. “It’s heartbreaking,” he said. “Because of dumb decisions you made when you were 16, 17 or 18, it’s never going to happen.”

Reflecting on decades in the shadows, Olson said the work was never easy but always worthwhile. “We had a lot of very courageous Russians who were risking their lives working secretly with us,” he said. “You always were aware that a single mistake could be fatal to them and possibly to you as well. But what sustained us was our belief in the mission. We felt honored to be there. It was kind of the dream assignment of any CIA officer to go to Moscow.”

Former CIA officer Jim Olson recalls life undercover, sacrifices of service at Dillon Lecture Series

WACO, Texas – There were a lot of ups and downs for the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team on Monday in the fall season-opening tournament at the Waco River Classic.

The Blue Dragons are nine strokes off the pace, sitting in fourth after 36 holes at the Bear Ridge Golf Couse at 15-over 591.

Weatherford (291-291—582) has a one-stroke lead over McLennan (297-286—583) and a two-shot lead over third-place and top-ranked Midland (293-291—584) heading into Tuesday's final round. That round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with Hutchinson, Weatherford, McLennan and Midland being paired together in the final 18 holes.

The Blue Dragons opened the 54-hole tournament shooting a 297 with freshman Grant Harzerbuehler leading the way with a 73. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/duquaine_hugo_o1wf">Hugo Duquaine</a>&nbsp;had a 71 and Harzerbuehler shot an even-par 72 to lead the Dragons in Round two. Hutchinson shot a 294 Monday afternoon.

The five Blue Dragon players who are figuring in the team scoring this week had a combined 23 birdies and one eagle against 48 bogeys and eight double bogeys or worse in the first two rounds on Monday.

Hatzerbuehler is the only Blue Dragons in the Individual Top 10 after two rounds at 1-over 145. Hatzerbuehler sandwiched six birdies and three bogeys between two double bogeys on the opening and closing holes in the opening round to shoot 1-over 73. He eagled the 515-yard, par-5 15th hole and had three birdies against three bogeys and one double-bogey to finish at even-par 72 in Round 2.

Duquaine opened the tournament with a 75 and shot a team-low 71 in the second round and is tied for 11th at 2-over 146. Duquaine had five birdies in the second round.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/northgraves_jack_xzbb">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;is tied for 22nd at 4-over 148. He had rounds of 73 and 75 on Monday.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/gibb_ronnie_uf6d">Ronnie Gibb</a>&nbsp;shot 8-over 152 and is tied for 41st after 36 holes. Gibb had a pair of 76s on Monday.

Freshman Mark Hewett is tied for 55th at 10-over 154 following rounds of 78 and 76 on Monday.

The Blue Dragons have two individual players in the tournament.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/vearncombe_matt_bbd7">Matt Vearncombe</a>&nbsp;is tied for 24th at 5-over 149. He carded a 75 and 74 on Monday. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/austin_joe_x3hk">Joe Austin</a>&nbsp;is tied for 47th at nine-over 153 after rounds of 78 and 75.

⛳ Dragons 4th after 2 rounds of opener in Waco

Last Saturday's No. 1-vs.-No. 2 battle between Hutchinson and Iowa Western at Gowans Stadium lived up to the hype.

The top-ranked Blue Dragons rallied late in the fourth quarter and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 1:01 remaining in regulation for a 30-27 victory over the second-ranked Reivers.

The outcome did not change the Top 2 spots in Monday's NJCAA Division I Football Rankings – the Blue Dragons received all 12 first-place votes and stayed No. 1. Iowa Western remained No. 2.

The Blue Dragons extend their program record for longest consecutive weeks in the national poll with to 52 weeks. The Dragons have been ranked in the top three of the NJCAA Rankings for 46 consecutive polls and have been ranked No. 1 in 41 of the 71 polls released in the Drew Dallas era.

Hutchinson (2-0) will be on the road this week to meet another Top 10 opponent as the Blue Dragons travel to Fort Dodge, Iowa to play No. 9 Iowa Central (2-0) at Noon in Dodger Stadium.

With Saturday's win, the Blue Dragons are now 4-1 all-time No. 1-vs.-No. 2 matchups in program history.

Two new teams join the Top 5 this week after the upset of former-No. 3 Northwest Mississippi. Tyler (3-0) jumps up to No. 3. Garden City (2-0) remains No. 4 and Mississippi Gulf Coast climbs to No. 5.

Only one other Jayhawk Conference team is in the Top 15 this week with Butler (2-0) moving up two spots to No. 13.

🏈 HutchCC remains No. 1 after instant classic with No. 2 Reivers

Suffering its first loss of the season last week, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team dropped only one spot in the latest NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Rankings released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons (4-1-0, 1-1-0) are now No. 13 in the latest ranking. Hutchinson has home matches against Dodge City (Wednesday) and Seward County (Saturday) coming up this week.

Hutchinson suffered its first setback of the season with a 2-1 home loss to then-No. 11 Cowley at the Salthawk Soccer Complex last Wednesday in a Top 15 national battle. The Dragons rebounded with an 8-0 win on Saturday at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons extended their record of consecutive weeks in the national rankings with their 22nd-straight appearance in the poll, which dates back to the 2023 season.

Daytona State, Arizona Western and Salt Lake retained the Top 3 spots in the rankings this week. Navarro moved up one spot to No. 4 and Iowa Western jumped up four spots to No. 5.

With the victory over Hutchinson and a 2-0 week, Cowley jumped up three spots to No. 8. Garden City jumps in at No. 20, marking the program's first-ever national ranking.

The Blue Dragons are 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents this season.

James Olson, former Chief of Counterintelligence for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)will present the third Dillon Lecture of the 2025 Series on Tuesday, September 16 at 10:30 am at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Olson served for over thirty years in the Directorate of Operations of the CIA, mostly overseas in clandestine operations. In addition to several foreign assignments, he was Chief of Counterintelligence at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

He has been awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Donovan Award, and several Distinguished Service Citations. He is also the recipient of awards from the Bush School and the Association of Former Students for excellence in teaching at Texas A &amp; M University.

Olson is the author of&nbsp;Fair Play: The Moral Dilemmas of Spying&nbsp;and&nbsp;To Catch a Spy: The Art of Counterintelligence. Prior to his career in the CIA, he served in the US Navy, where he attained the rank of lieutenant commander.

Olson to present at Dillon Lecture Series 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Christian Johnson found Derrick Salley Jr. for a 3-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining, and No. 1 Hutchinson Community College escaped with a 30-27 victory over No. 2 Iowa Western on Saturday afternoon at Gowans Stadium in a rematch of last season’s NJCAA national championship game.

Johnson, who accounted for three touchdowns, led the Blue Dragons (2-0) on a seven-play, 87-yard drive in the closing minutes after Iowa Western’s Malachi Marshall gave the Reivers (1-1) a late lead with a 15-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

Hutchinson trailed 20-16 in the third quarter after Marshall connected with Cyrus Courtney for a 43-yard strike, but Jack Sells swung momentum with a rare 100-yard return of a blocked extra point. Johnson later punched in a 2-yard touchdown to put the Dragons back on top, 23-20.

Marshall threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns, including scores to DeAndre Horn and Jaivyn Moore, while adding 30 yards and a rushing touchdown. But the Reivers were turned away on downs in the final seconds after Hutchinson’s defense held near midfield.

Johnson completed 18 of 26 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while rushing for 68 yards and two scores. Salley Jr. was his top target with four catches for 106 yards, his first career 100-plus receiving yards game. Rashaud Hurt added 55 rushing yards, including a 40-yard touchdown burst in the second quarter.

Defensively, McPherson native Teegan Haines led Hutchinson with 12 tackles, while K.J. Henson Jr. added seven stops and 1.5 sacks. Kevin Moorer also recorded a sack, and M.J. Graham intercepted Marshall in the third quarter. For Iowa Western, Jerome Baker posted a game-high 13 tackles and Andy Burburija tallied two of the Reivers’ four sacks.

The teams were nearly even statistically — Hutchinson finished with 360 yards of offense to Iowa Western’s 343 — but the Blue Dragons overcame 14 penalties for 136 yards.

The Blue Dragons have won four straight against the Reivers — the longest streak any opponent has managed in Iowa Western’s 17-year program history.

Hutchinson will travel to Fort Dodge, Iowa next week to face No. 14 Iowa Central (2-0), while Iowa Western returns to Kansas to face Dodge City (0-1).&nbsp;

🏈 Johnson, late TD lift No. 1 Hutchinson over No. 2 Iowa Western in thriller

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Press Box Suite C at Gowans Stadium has been renamed the Rusty Hilst Broadcast Booth, honoring the longtime voice of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College athletics.

Hilst, who died in June after a battle with ALS, spent more than 50 years calling football and basketball games for the Salthawks and Blue Dragons. Known for his warm and steady delivery, he became a fixture on the local airwaves and a trusted source for generations of fans.

The dedication was held Friday at Gowans Stadium, where family, colleagues and friends gathered to celebrate Hilst’s legacy as a teacher, coach and broadcaster.

“Rusty started broadcasting Blue Dragon athletics in 1969,” HutchCC sports information director Steve Carpenter said. “He called 870 Blue Dragon football games, winning 692, and 1,681 Blue Dragon men’s basketball games, winning 1,274. In the later years, he even did 249 women’s basketball games, winning 226. During that time, he got to call three national basketball championships, 19 men’s conference titles, six women’s titles, 14 men’s Region VI titles and six women’s Region VI titles. In football, four league titles and 16 bowl appearances. Rusty got to call a lot of good stuff.”

Over his career, Hilst earned numerous accolades, including Kansas Sportscaster of the Year and the Hod Humiston Award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. He was inducted into the Hutchinson High School Wall of Honor and later became the first non-player inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame.

“When you name a room after an individual, it’s a permanent way to recognize their importance to a team, school or organization,” HutchCC athletic director Josh Gooch said. “Today is a special day. We get to honor and memorialize a legendary broadcaster that we all got to enjoy.”

Friends and colleagues said Hilst’s influence extended beyond the press box, recalling his kindness, mentorship and commitment to the Hutchinson community.

“On behalf of Hutch High and USD 308, I just want to say how thankful we are for Rusty,” Hutchinson High athletic director Steve Kappenman said. “Myself, growing up, those are my first memories of listening to Hutch High and the Blue Dragons with my dad — that voice in our house. We didn’t have smartphones, so it was that radio tuned into Rusty each time.”

One of Hilst’s longtime broadcast partners and the current voice of the Salthawks, Glen Grunwald, shared stories from years of traveling to and from games together.

Gowans Stadium Press Box renamed for late broadcaster Rusty Hilst

For the third time in as many seasons, the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons and Iowa Western Reivers meet as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the NJCAA Division I national football rankings.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (1-0) renew their rivalry against the No. 2-ranked Reivers (1-0) at 12:03 p.m. on Saturday in Hutchinson's 2025 home opener at Gowans Stadium.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 11:30 a.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Rob Dreher (color) calling the action.

The game will also be nationally televised on ESPN+ with Pat Strathman (PBP) and Gary Thomas (color) on the call at Noon.

This is a rematch of the 2024 NJCAA Football Championship game where the No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the top-ranked Reivers 28-23 on December 18, 2024 in Canyon, Texas, halting Iowa Western's bid at a championship repeat.

Hutchinson plays in a No. 1-vs.-No. 2 match-up for the fifth time in program history. The Blue Dragons are 3-1 in such games with two of the previous four matchups against Iowa Western.

The Blue Dragons opened the 2025 season with an impressive 76-8 road win last Saturday at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico.

Iowa Western had last week off, but rolled to a 39-20 season-opening win over No. 6 Georgia Military, defeating the Bulldogs 39-20 on August 30 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Running back Daniel Swinney rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Malachi Marshall was 13 of 15 passing for 238 yards and a touchdown. The Reivers racked up 510 total yards and held Georgia Military to 356 yards with six quarterback sacks and two takeaways.

Hutchinson bids for its 12th home-opening victory on Saturday. Since 2000, the Blue Dragons are 22-3 in home openers and overall they are 67-24-2 in home openers.

🏈 No. 1 Dragons play host to No. 2 Reivers on Saturday

Tiana Mangakahia, a former Hutchinson Community College women's basketball player whose story of resilience inspired fans around the world, died Thursday at the age of 30.

Mangakahia, originally from Brisbane, Australia, attended HutchCC from 2015 to 2017 but was ruled ineligible to compete under NJCAA rules because she had previously signed an amateur contract in her home country. Despite never playing a game for the Blue Dragons, she became a fixture around the program before transferring to Syracuse in 2017.

At Syracuse, Mangakahia quickly rose to national prominence. She led the nation in assists and earned first-team All-ACC honors, establishing herself as one of the premier point guards in women’s college basketball.

Her career was interrupted in June 2019, when she was diagnosed with Stage 2, Grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. She underwent chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, and was declared cancer-free in November 2019. Mangakahia sat out the 2019 season but returned in 2020, averaging 11.4 points, 7.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for the Orange.

Following graduation, she played professionally in Russia and in the Women’s National Basketball League in Australia. She retired in 2023 after her cancer returned.

Just last week, Mangakahia revealed on social media that her health had taken “a negative turn” and that she was “experiencing significant physical decline.”

Mangakahia’s journey from Hutchinson to Syracuse to the professional ranks, and through the fight of her life against cancer left a lasting impact on teammates, coaches and fans on both sides of the globe.

Despite never playing a game for the Blue Dragons, she became a fixture around the program before transferring to Syracuse in 2017.At Syracuse, Mangakahia quickly rose to national prominence. She led the nation in assists and earned first-team All-ACC honors, establishing herself as one of the premier point guards in women’s college basketball.Her career was interrupted in June 2019, when she was diagnosed with Stage 2, Grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. She underwent chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, and was declared cancer-free in November 2019. Mangakahia sat out the 2019 season but returned in 2020, averaging 11.4 points, 7.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for the Orange.Following graduation, she played professionally in Russia and in the Women’s National Basketball League in Australia. David Leroy Beachy, 84, passed away on September 10, 2025, at Kenwood View Health and Rehabilitation Center, Salina, KS. David was born on May 31, 1941, in Hutchinson, KS, the son of David M. and Susie (Borntrager) Beachy.

David graduated from Hesston High School and attended Hesston College where he also played basketball. He received his bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Denver. He was a social worker in Denver, CO and was the owner of Moon Mist Hotel in Meade, KS. He was the director of Children’s Choir and did missionary work in the Philippines for over 25 years. David was a Broncos and Chiefs fan. On September 3, 1999, David married Magdalina “Maggie” Hora in the Philippines.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral chapel. The burial will take place in the Yoder Cemetery, Yoder, KS. Memorials may be given to the Faith Baptist Church-Salina and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.&nbsp;
