WACO, Texas – There were a lot of ups and downs for the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team on Monday in the fall season-opening tournament at the Waco River Classic.
The Blue Dragons are nine strokes off the pace, sitting in fourth after 36 holes at the Bear Ridge Golf Couse at 15-over 591.
Weatherford (291-291—582) has a one-stroke lead over McLennan (297-286—583) and a two-shot lead over third-place and top-ranked Midland (293-291—584) heading into Tuesday's final round. That round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with Hutchinson, Weatherford, McLennan and Midland being paired together in the final 18 holes.
The Blue Dragons opened the 54-hole tournament shooting a 297 with freshman Grant Harzerbuehler leading the way with a 73. Freshman Hugo Duquaine had a 71 and Harzerbuehler shot an even-par 72 to lead the Dragons in Round two. Hutchinson shot a 294 Monday afternoon.
The five Blue Dragon players who are figuring in the team scoring this week had a combined 23 birdies and one eagle against 48 bogeys and eight double bogeys or worse in the first two rounds on Monday.
Hatzerbuehler is the only Blue Dragons in the Individual Top 10 after two rounds at 1-over 145. Hatzerbuehler sandwiched six birdies and three bogeys between two double bogeys on the opening and closing holes in the opening round to shoot 1-over 73. He eagled the 515-yard, par-5 15th hole and had three birdies against three bogeys and one double-bogey to finish at even-par 72 in Round 2.
Duquaine opened the tournament with a 75 and shot a team-low 71 in the second round and is tied for 11th at 2-over 146. Duquaine had five birdies in the second round.
Sophomore Jack Northgraves is tied for 22nd at 4-over 148. He had rounds of 73 and 75 on Monday.
Freshman Ronnie Gibb shot 8-over 152 and is tied for 41st after 36 holes. Gibb had a pair of 76s on Monday.
Freshman Mark Hewett is tied for 55th at 10-over 154 following rounds of 78 and 76 on Monday.
The Blue Dragons have two individual players in the tournament.
Freshman Matt Vearncombe is tied for 24th at 5-over 149. He carded a 75 and 74 on Monday. Freshman Joe Austin is tied for 47th at nine-over 153 after rounds of 78 and 75.
