The Jayhawk West champion Hutchinson Community College baseball team will play the Highland Scotties in the opening game of the 2021 Region VI Hutchinson sub-regional tournament on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Pairings for the Hutchinson, Liberal, Arkansas City and Overland Park sub-regionals were announced on Monday by the Region VI baseball committee. Assigned to the Hutchinson sub-regional are East eighth place Highland, East fourth-place Allen and West fifth-place Colby.

The Blue Dragons (35-15) and Highland (9-32) open the sub-regional at Noon Friday. Allen (31-17) and Colby (26-23) will play in the second opening-round game.

The Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department announced that admission will be charged this weekend at Hobart-Detter Field. Admission will be $10 per person per day with kids age 5 and under admitted free.

All games from the Hutchinson sub-regional will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

The four sub-regional winners move into the Region VI Super-Regional on May 22-24 at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team had a bit of a shaky start in the opening round of the 2021 NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship on Monday at The Rawls Course.

The Blue Dragons finished with a flourish, though, and leads the national tournament after 18 holes, tying a school record in the process.

Led by freshman Ben Partridge’s 5-under 67 and freshman Harry Crockett’s 3-under 69, the Blue Dragons shot an 8-under 280 in Monday’s first round. Hutchinson leads Midland College and Odessa College by three shots each after 18 holes.

The 280 team score tied the Hutchinson record for a national tournament round, matching the 2006 record of 280 set at the Links at Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Monday’s round was the best single national tournament round since shooting 288 in the final round at the Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Florida in 2016.

The Blue Dragons, Midland and Odessa are scheduled to tee off in Tuesday’s second round from 1:30 to 2:10 p.m. Because of potential rainy weather, Tuesday tee times might be changed, according to tournament officials.

Starting the tournament on Hole No. 10 with the earliest tee times, the Blue Dragons started 7-over par with six bogeys and one double-bogey. Things quickly turned around as Hutchinson had five birdies, collectively, on Nos. 12 and 13. The Dragons made the turn at 4-over par.  

The Blue Dragons started their strong back-nine with six birdies and two bogeys over the next four holes. Then the Dragons caught fire on the final two holes.

Cameron Rios-Ceballos parred the final two holes of his round and Trey McCrae closed with a par and birdie.

Harry Crocket followed with back-to-back birdies, including a 20-foot downhill putt on No. 17. Ben Partridge finished birdie-birdie. Partridge nailed his approach on No 8 to 4 feet.

The only blemish down the stretch was a Charlie Crocket bogey on No. 8.

Partridge’s 67 on Monday started with four birdies on the front nine. He bogeyed Nos. 2 and 7 over his final nine holes, but countered with birdies Nos. 3, 8 and 9 to complete his seventh round in the 60s this season.

Partridge is in a three-way tie for second with Jefferson State’s Dillon West and Midland’s Bladen Samaniego. That trio trails individual leader Wil Adams of Odessa by one stroke.

Harry Crockett started the championship going double-bogey-bogey over his first two holes. He got it back to 2-over at the turn and played the back nine in 4-under to close at 3-under 69. Crockett is also in the Top 10, tied with five others for sixth place.

McCray and Rios-Ceballos are part of a seven-way tie for 18th after even-par 72s.

McCrae had seven birdies and seven bogeys in his first round. Rios-Ceballos started his round with 10 consecutive pars.

Charlie Crockett posted a 4-over 76 on Monday. He is tied for 46th.

Garden City is tied for sixth with Jefferson State at 4-over 292. Dodge City is 16th at 307 and Kansas City is 19th at 315.

Regina Louise Cade, 64, died Friday, May 7, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born April 12, 1957, in Hutchinson, to George William ‘Bill’ and Marilyn L. (Catte) Cade, Jr.

She was a graduate of Fairfield High School and Sterling College. Regina taught school at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility and Early Head Start.

Her favorite past times were camping and fishing.

Her significant other, Bradley Stiggins, of 24 years, survives. Other survivors include: son, Lloyd C. Symns of Partridge; mother, Marilyn&nbsp; Cade; sister, Celida Cade, all of Abbyville; brother, Lloyd Cade and wife Cherie of Packwood, WA; granddaughter, Sage Symns; seven nieces and nephews; aunts, Alice Kinnison of Colorado and Lois Hicks of Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her father, and a son, Michael Symns.

Marty Meador Brown-Devaul, 80, of Hutchinson, died May 8, 2021, at her home. She was born March 2, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Elmer and Rosa (Seward) Galliart.

In 1949, Marty’s father passed away. She was adopted by her step-father, Vane C. Meador, in 1956. Marty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958, Hutchinson Community College in 1960, and Sterling College in 1963. She was a seventh grade English teacher for USD 308 from 1979 to 2002. Marty also worked at Dillard’s from 1985 to 2006 in the house wares department. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson.

On Dec. 30, 2006, Marty married Carlton ‘Duke’ Devaul in Hutchinson. They shared nearly 15 years together.

She is survived by: husband, Duke Devaul, Hutchinson; son, Chad Brown, Florida; son, Scott Brown, Hutchinson; daughter, Wendy Brown, San Francisco, California; and granddaughter, Kara Brown, Hutchinson.

Marty was preceded in death by her parents and her Grandma Galliart.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, with John Chastain and Keith Neill officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team needed only 14 plays to produce a school-record single offensive quarter on Sunday at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson scored 49 points in the first quarter and rolled by the Highland Scotties, 77-7, in a Jayhawk Conference Mother's Day battle.

Dating back to the 2019 season, the Blue Dragons have won eight games in a row.

Highland dropped its fifth-straight game and fell to 1-5. The Scotties have now been outscored 267-24 in those five losses.

Hutchinson's 49-point first quarter broke the old record of 41 points (second quarter) set in 2019 against RPA. The Blue Dragons amassed 271 yards total offense on just 14 plays, seven of those plays were for touchdowns. The most plays needed to score on a single possession in the first quarter was just four plays. Hutchinson had three one-play scoring drives in the quarter.

The Blue Dragon defense helped set up their offense with three interceptions, all coming in Highland territory. The Dragons also sacked Highland quarterback Quinn Buessing seven times in the first quarter.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons dominated Highland holding the Scotties to a minus 1-yard of total offense. Highland rushed for a negative 40 yards and threw for 39. Five of Highland's eight first downs came from Hutchinson penalties. Blue Dragon Softball Season ends with 3rd-place Region VI finish

With two games remaining, the Blue Dragons control their path to an outright Jayhawk Conference title with home games remaining against Highland (1-4) on Sunday and Dodge City (1-3) next week.

Kickoff for Sunday's Mother's Day matchup against the Scotties is 1 p.m.

The Blue Dragons made it through the toughest part of their 2021 schedule with resounding wins over a pair of nationally ranked opponents - 23-7 over No. 3 Garden City on April 25 and 42-24 at No. 7 Independence last Sunday night.

The Blue Dragons are 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference, followed by Garden City at 4-1, Coffeyville at 3-2 and Independence at 3-2.

Last week against the Pirates, back-up quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/laible_dylan_mrze">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;came off the bench for an injured C.J. Ogbonna and threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns against a very good Pirate defense. Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/braham_cortes_6fw6">Cortez Braham</a>&nbsp;posted career highs of six receptions, 141 yards and became the first Blue Dragon receiver since 2014 to catch three touchdown passes in a game.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons limited Indy's vaunted rushing attack to 84 net yards, holding Tavion Thomas, the No. 4 rusher in the NJCAA to 35 yards on 12 carries.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/gilbert_marquise_o0s7">Marquise Gilbert</a>&nbsp;had two second-half interceptions that thwarted a Pirate comeback attempt.

Highland beat Fort Scott 30-14 in its season opener but as dropped four straight since by an aggregate score of 190-17. Last week, the Scotties lost to Butler 34-7 in El Dorado.

The Scotties rank last in scoring offense, but are second in passing yards at 219.8 yards per game. Highland quarterback Quinn Buessing is completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 212.8 yards per game with three touchdowns and nine interceptions. Receivers Deontay Campbell, Cam McKinney and Raequan Prince have combined for 72 receptions, 830 yards and four touchdowns.

One year ago, the Blue Dragons went into the Highland game undefeated and ranked No. 1 only to get upset by the Scotties 29-27.

Sunday's matchup is the 39th in series history. The Blue Dragons own a 33-5 all-time record, including 21-0 all-time at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons defeated Colby 13-6 in the winner's bracket semifinals on Saturday. Hutch then lost 9-0 in five innings to No. 3 Butler in the winner's bracket final, the Dragons' first appearance that keep in the regional winner's bracket since 2018.

Hutchinson (29-16) will play Barton (20-26) in the loser's bracket final at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The winner of that game would have to beat Butler twice at Noon and 2 p.m. to win the Region VI championship. The Blue Dragons bid for their third Region VI Tournament championship appearance in five seasons, the first in the Division I Tournament since 1987.

COLBY RECAP The Blue Dragons jumped on top-seeded Colby with three quick runs in the top of the first and finished off the Trojans with a six-run uprising in the top of the seventh.

The Botany and Space Exploration course is funded by a grant from Evergy.

With recommendations to engage students in creative discussion and hands-on activities, education professionals can immerse themselves in exciting topics including the history of aquaculture, food waste on Earth, and how to feed a colony on Mars.

The six-course program can be completed at your own pace within a 90-day window.

DODGE CITY – Over just five pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday, the Hutchinson Community College softball team went from three outs away from falling to the elimination bracket to a walkoff victory.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/head_easton_e2iz">Easton Head</a>&nbsp;doubled home pinch-runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/collins_cheyenne_i32h">Cheyenne Collins</a>&nbsp;with the game-winning run to complete only the second final at-bat comeback of the season in a 3-2 victory over Seward County in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament at Legends Park.

The Blue Dragons (28-15) will play top-seeded Colby, a 5-2 winner over Barton on Friday, in a winner's bracket semifinal at 11 a.m.

Hutchinson trailed 2-1 entering the Blue Dragons' final at-bat.

On the third pitch of the inning to clean-up hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bevan_natalie_gq93">Natalie Bevan</a>, she hit her ninth home run of the season to left field and tie the game at 2-all. On the very next pitch,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/sterneker_carley_kxwf">Carley Sterneker</a>&nbsp;doubled to right-center field and became the potential winning run. That hit also extended Sterneker's hitting streak to 18 games, third longest in program history.

Sterneker was then pinch-ran for by Collins. Head lined the first pitch to her just over the glove of Seward County shortstop Jaci Oakley. Collins scored the game-winning run, giving the Blue Dragons just their second walkoff win of the season and the third win of 2021 when trailing after six innings.

Seward County took a 1-0 lead in the second on an A.J. Luna home run. The Dragons tied the game in the fourth when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;scored on the back end of a double steal with&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>. It was Williams' 52nd stolen base of the season and Miller's 28th.

With one out in the sixth, the Saints took a 2-1 lead when Jacie Scott doubled down the left-field line and then scored on Oakley's triple to center.

The Dragons turned to left-handed pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/loney_sadie_l7nj">Sadie Loney</a>&nbsp;out of the bullpen at that point. She gave up an infield single to Ashley low, but Oakley remained at third. Loney and the Dragons got out of the jam with further damage when Williams threw out Low trying to steal second and Ayanna Clemmons lined out to Head at second base.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Seward County 8-5 with Bevan going 2 for 3. Sterneker had her 18th double of the season, which tied Tori Carruthers (2017) and Nicole Bauer (2008) for third on the Blue Dragon single-season list.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;pitched 5 1-3 innings in a no-decision. She allowed four hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks. Galliher did hit a batter.

Loney moved to 5-1 for the season with 1 2-3 innings of relief work. She allowed just that infield single and walked one while striking out two.

The Blue Dragons will play two games for sure and as many as three games on Saturday. A win over Colby advances Hutchinson to the winner's bracket final at 3 p.m. A loss to the Trojans means the Dragons would play an elimination game at 1 p.m. If Hutchinson wins that game, it would play again at 5 p.m. in another elimination game.

Luna home run. The Dragons tied the game in the fourth when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;scored on the back end of a double steal with&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>. It was Williams' 52nd stolen base of the season and Miller's 28th.With one out in the sixth, the Saints took a 2-1 lead when Jacie Scott doubled down the left-field line and then scored on Oakley's triple to center.The Dragons turned to left-handed pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/loney_sadie_l7nj">Sadie Loney</a>&nbsp;out of the bullpen at that point. She gave up an infield single to Ashley low, but Oakley remained at third. Loney and the Dragons got out of the jam with further damage when Williams threw out Low trying to steal second and Ayanna Clemmons lined out to Head at second base.The Blue Dragons out-hit Seward County 8-5 with Bevan going 2 for 3. Sterneker had her 18th double of the season, which tied Tori Carruthers (2017) and Nicole Bauer (2008) for third on the Blue Dragon single-season list.<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;pitched 5 1-3 innings in a no-decision. She allowed four hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks. Galliher did hit a batter.Loney moved to 5-1 for the season with 1 2-3 innings of relief work. She allowed just that infield single and walked one while striking out two.The Blue Dragons will play two games for sure and as many as three games on Saturday. A win over Colby advances Hutchinson to the winner's bracket final at 3 p.m. A loss to the Trojans means the Dragons would play an elimination game at 1 p.m. If Hutchinson wins that game, it would play again at 5 p.m. in another elimination game.

Blue Dragon Softball rallies; gets walk off win in Region 6 opener

The Hutchinson Community College softball team is the No. 4 overall seed for the 2021 Region VI Division I Softball Tournament, which begins Friday at Legends Park in Dodge City.

The Blue Dragons (27-15) will play fifth-seeded Seward County (17-15) at 3 p.m. on Friday in the opening round of the eight=team double-elimination tournament. The winner will advance to the district playoff later this month.

The Hutchinson/Seward County winner and loser will play the Colby/Barton pairing either at 11 a.m. on Saturday in a winner's bracket matchup or at 9 a.m. on Saturday in a first-round elimination game.

The Blue Dragons run-ruled Seward County twice in the only regular-season doubleheader of 2021 on April 15 at Fun Valley. Hutchinson won 12-4 and 10-1. The Blue Dragons combined for 22 runs on 28 hits against the Saints with three home runs.

The Dragons enter the postseason with a modest two-game hitting streak, but are 7-3 in their last 10 games. The Saints have lost two in a row and are 5-5 in the last 10.

Hutchinson is hitting .382 for the season and is averaging 8.2 runs per game.

Freshman shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/grimes_madison_qa73">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;is leading the Jayhawk Conference and is second in the NJCAA in hitting at .588. Grimes' 80 total hits are second in Blue Dragon single-season history. She already owns Hutch's single-season RBI record with 75. Grimes is also 35 of 36 in stolen bases and has a team-high 11 home runs.

Third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bevan_natalie_gq93">Natalie Bevan</a>&nbsp;is hitting .438 with 19 times, eight homers and 56 RBIs from the clean-up spot.

The top two hitters in the order – catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;and utility player&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>&nbsp;– have been setting the table all season. Williams, Hutchinson's single-season and career stolen base leader with 51 and 80, respectively, is hitting .395 with an on-base percentage of .619. She has scored 69 runs. Miller his hitting .397 with 22 bunt singles. Miller has an on-base percentage of .417 and she has stolen 27 bases this season.

First baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/sterneker_carley_kxwf">Carley Sterneker</a>&nbsp;is hitting .373 and is on a 17-game hitting streak, the third longest streak in team history.

Eight of the nine Blue Dragon starters hit .333 or better.

Hutchinson's staff earned-run average for the season is 5.98.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;(12-4) will likely get the opening-game start. She has an ERA of 5.07 with 95 strikeouts in 98 innings pitched.

Blue Dragon Softball opens Region VI play today in Dodge City

DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team had plenty to celebrate on Thursday at Cavalier Field.

The Blue Dragons took care of their own business with wins of 12-0 in five innings and 17-3 over the Conquistadors. Those wins, combined with Game 1 losses by Seward County, Butler and Cloud County, meant Hutchinson won the Jayhawk West championship, winning a league title for the 13th time in program history.

The Game 2 win turned out to be a milestone victory for Blue Dragon head coach Ryan Schmidt, who surpassed John Burgi as the program's coaching wins' leader. Schmidt now has 315 victories and four Jayhawk West titles (2014, 2017, 2019, 2021) in the Blue Dragon dugout. Schmidt is 315-166 in nine seasons with the Blue Dragons. Burgi had 314 wins from 1991-2000 and coached three West championship teams.

The 2021 Blue Dragons are now 34-14 heading into Saturday's regular-season finale at Hobart-Detter Field against Dodge City – first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. With the conference title, Hutchinson also became a Region VI sub-regional tournament site host. The four-team, double-elimination sub-regional starts next Friday, May 14 at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons' high-scoring offense returned to form on Thursday with two home runs in Game 1 and seven more in Game 2. The seven home run in the second game tied for the second most in Blue Dragon single-game history, but they aren't a season high. The Dragons hit a school-record eight home runs at State Fair on March 9.

Now with 86 home runs for the season, the 2021 Blue Dragons tied the 2018 Dragons for the third-most home runs in a season.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/callahan_austin_vm9d">Austin Callahan</a>&nbsp;hit his 18th home run of the season in Game 2. He is now fourth on the Hutchinson single-season home run list. His 21 career home runs moved him into the career Top 10. Callahan is tied for ninth with Josh O'Dell (2002-03), Matt Rebout (2001-02) and Matt McKay (1991-92).

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/totosian_jack_hwf9">Jack Torosian</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/mclaughlin_ben_izxd">Ben McLaughlin</a>&nbsp;became the sixth and seventh different Blue Dragons this season with multi-home run games. Both hit a pair of home runs in Game 2 on Thursday.

Torosian hit Hutchinson's seventh grand slam this season, which extends an ongoing team record. Torosian also had six RBIs in Game 2, which ties him for seventh in Blue Dragon single-game history. This is the fourth time this season a Blue Dragon player has registered six or more RBIs in a game.

He struck out five in the game, working 1-2-3 innings in the second and fourth frames. The only time Firmature had multiple runners on base was the fifth. Only one Dodge City batter reached second.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Dodge City 8-3, but took advantage of four Conquistador errors and five Dodge City walks in the opening game.

Hutch scored five runs in the first, one in the second and six more in the third. Eleven of the 12 runs scored in Game 1 were unearned.

Callahan and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/steele_jenner_eobj">Jenner Steele</a>&nbsp;had two hits each. Reetz had three RBIs with his first-inning three-run home run.

Lowe went 3 for 5 with a home run, double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Steele went 3 for 6 as part of an 18-hit Hutchinson attack. Delong also had a season-high three hits.

Blue Dragon Baseball clinches west title; Schmidt becomes HutchCC wins leader

Junior college basketball's winningest team is going high-octane.

Tommy DeSalme was named the 15th head coach in the 90-year history of Blue Dragon Men's Basketball. DeSalme was introduced to Blue Dragon Nation by Athletic Director Josh Gooch at a news conference on Thursday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hutchinson will be DeSalme's fifth stop as a head coach, his third in the Jayhawk Conference. DeSalme has amassed an overall coaching record of 316-233 in 20 seasons coaching at Cowley College (12 seasons), Independence Community College (2 seasons), Kansas Wesleyan University (1 season) and Sterling College (5 seasons).

DeSalme moves into the position vacated by Steve Eck, who left the Blue Dragons in April after 12 seasons as the winningest head coach in Hutchinson history. Eck ranks No. 3 in all-time Jayhawk Conference coaching wins and No. 5 in Region VI coaching wins.

With 284 KJCCC/Region VI victories at Cowley and Independence, DeSalme ranks seventh in Jayhawk coaching wins and ninth in Region VI coaching victories.

"What an incredible honor it is for me to have this opportunity," DeSalme said. "This gymnasium is a cathedral. This is such a special place. The town of Hutchinson is a special place and it's an honor for me to be the next head coach here."

Previous to Hutchinson, DeSalme spent 12 seasons at Cowley, becoming that program's winningest coach with a record of 239-143.

But it's his last two seasons that DeSalme put Tiger Basketball on the map as a Region VI and national contender.

DeSalme transformed the Tigers into an entertaining, high-scoring, high-pressure defensive group that set numerous scoring and 3-point shooting records, not to mention a lot of victories and deep postseason runs.

"Those who follow Jayhawk Conference basketball and those who attended the NJCAA Tournament know the brand of basketball that Coach DeSalme is known for," Gooch said. "It's a fast-paced aggressive style that players love to play and fans love to watch. That's what we are in for."

DeSalme's 2021 Cowley team was the No. 2 scoring offense in the NJCAA at 119.0 points per game. The Tigers reached the century mark 21 times, including a Cowley school record 143 points against Dodge City. The 2021 Tigers averaged 14.1 3-point goals and 38 3-point attempts per game, both of those marks led the NJCAA. Cowley had 10 or more 3-pointers 20 times in 2021, breaking the 20 mark four times, including a team record 25 against Dodge City.

Under DeSalme, the 2021 Tigers posted a 24-5 overall record, tied for the Jayhawk East championship, won the Region VI Tournament for the first time since 1957 and advanced all the way to the NJCAA Tournament championship game where Cowley fell to Jayhawk East rival Coffeyville in the finals.

In 2020, the 26-6 Tigers led the NJCAA in scoring at 109.8 points per game. Cowley won the Jayhawk East championship and advanced to the Region VI Tournament semifinals. Cowley was named as an at-large selection for the NJCAA Tournament, but the championships were canceled because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

"Three years ago, we had a team at Cowley that way overachieved, but couldn't shoot the ball, DeSalme said when asked about why he changed his style of play. "I was the king of 61-60 games and I was done with those. I wanted to play faster pace. It's a fun style.

"It allows you to play a different style. You don't have to wait to get a 6-9, 6-10 guy down in the front of the rim. It makes other teams worry about you."

Over his 12 full seasons at Cowley, DeSalme was named the league's Coach of the Year twice (2010, 2021). Cowley won or tied for three Jayhawk East titles (2010, 2020, 2021), played in two Region VI Tournament championship games (2012, 2021) and reached the regional semifinals five times (2011, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2021).

"What I learned about him through the interview process is his passion for student-athletes and the importance for them to be prepared in the classroom," Gooch said. "Coach DeSalme understands the importance of Blue Dragon Basketball in this community."

DeSalme mentored two Jayhawk East MVPs – Tyrus McGee in 2011, Dalen Ridgnal in 2021, both whom were also first-team NJCAA All-Americans in those seasons. Ridgnal was also a third-team All-American in 2020. DeSalme also coached three Jayhawk East Freshmen of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year, 29 all-conference players and eight first-team all-league selections.

DeSalme's first KJCCC stop was at Independence Community College in 2008 and 2009. DeSalme had a record of 45-19 with the Pirates. His first Independence team was ranked as high as No. 16 in the NJCAA Rankings and finished second in the Jayhawk East with a 16-2 record. Antonio Henson was the 2008 Jayhawk East MVP and second-team NJCAA All-American.

Previous to Independence, DeSalme spent one highly successful season at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 2007. The Coyotes went 28-4 record, won the KCAC regular-season and postseason titles, earned a No. 6 national ranking and put together a 19-game winning streak. KWU earned a berth in the NAIA National Tournament and advanced to the second round. The 28 victories also broke a school record for most victories in a season. DeSalme was named KCAC Coach of the Year. His Coyotes also led the nation in scoring defense in 2017.

Prior to Kansas Wesleyan, DeSalme spent his first five seasons as a head coach at Sterling College, where he turned the Warriors program around. DeSalme was 84-67 at Sterling, compiling a 60-30 record in KCAC regular-season play. Sterling finished second place in the KCAC for four consecutive seasons, and earned a berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament two times over a three-year span (2004 and 2006). The 2004 Warriors won the KCAC postseason tournament which sent Sterling to its first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance. Under DeSalme's leadership, Sterling twice tied the school record for most victories in a season with 18 in 2002 and 2005.

DeSalme started his coaching career as an assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. DeSalme was responsible for recruiting as well as eligibility and academic progress. While at SOSU, the Savage Storm captured two Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference titles in 1996 and 1997. The team also made two trips to the NAIA Division I National Championships, finishing with a No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Division I final poll in 1997 with an overall record of 27-4.

"I hope to continue the run here and keep putting up banners," DeSalme said.

DeSalme earned his Master of Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 1999, after earning his Bachelor degree in Education from SOSU in 1995.

DeSalme played collegiate ball at SOSU, where he was a four-year letter winner and a two-year starter.

A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, DeSalme earned all-state, all-region and all-district honors as a senior at Bartlesville High. As a three-year letter winner, he helped guide Bartlesville to a pair of state titles in 1989 and 1991.

The Tigers reached the century mark 21 times, including a Cowley school record 143 points against Dodge City. The 2021 Tigers averaged 14.1 3-point goals and 38 3-point attempts per game, both of those marks led the NJCAA. DeSalme becomes Blue Dragon Basketball's 15th head coach

Darryl Ammons, 81, of Hutchinson, died May 3, 2021, at his home. He was born Jan. 13, 1940, in Pampa, Texas to Carl and Bennie (Oliphant) Ammons.

Darryl graduated from high school in Pampa in 1958, and went on to earn his associate’s degree at Decatur Baptist College. He worked in the oil and gas industry as a field operations director for ConocoPhillips. Darryl was a member of Crosspoint Church, Hutchinson. He loved to read and visit with his friends and family. Darryl enjoyed attending athletic events for his children and grandchildren. He had the gift of encouragement, uplifting anyone who he came into contact with, even those who were there to care for him.

On Sept. 17, 1960, Darryl married Dorothy Nell Pitts in Pampa, Texas. They shared 60 years together.

He is survived by: wife, Dot Ammons, Hutchinson; daughter, Shanda Wilkens (Scott), Hutchinson; sons, Bruce Ammons (Ruthie), Houston, Texas, Gregg Ammons (Tinese), Lubbock, Texas, and Shawn Ammons (Cheryl), Conway Springs; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Diane Studebaker (Harold), Allenreed, Texas; and nephew, Derek Studebaker (Jolene), Amarillo, Texas.
