HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There hasn't been much change in the past week in gas prices, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"We have settled in a little bit, it seems like, in the past couple of weeks," Steward said. "Haven't seen any big increases, but, from a month ago, we're up here in Kansas, a little more than 20 cents a gallon. We're at $3.17 a gallon on average across the state. The good news is, it's 39 cents lower than the national average and seventh cheapest in the nation."

Local county averages are on either side of the state average.

The fundamentals suggest that we may be looking at increases going forward, however.

"We're moving into, seasonally, typically a higher demand time of the year where more people are out driving," Steward said. "We're headed toward summer driving season and the demand is likely going to be increasing as we head into summer. We've seen some issues on the crude oil market, OPEC production limits, geopolitical issues with Russia, tensions in the Middle East."

Brent Crude was over $89 a barrel as of Thursday morning.

"It's quite a bit higher than we were earlier this year," Steward said. "We've seen that jump here in the past few weeks."

According to <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/u-s-refiners-still-have-gas-in-the-tank-commodities-roundup-a1fe3332?mod=mw_quote_news">Marketwatch.com</a>, shares of Marathon Petroleum are up 45% year to date, while Valero and Phillips 66 are up 39% and 30%, respectively.

AAA: Gas prices flat in short term, but likely headed up

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Central Christian College of Kansas (CCCK) announced Thursday it is adding two new concentrations to provide students with expertise in high-growth areas in which employers are searching for talent. New offerings include Cybersecurity (<a href="https://www.centralchristian.edu/cybersecurity">https://www.centralchristian.edu/cybersecurity</a>) and Data Science/AI (<a href="https://www.centralchristian.edu/datascience">https://www.centralchristian.edu/datascience</a>).

The 0% unemployment rate for Cybersecurity graduates reflects the ever-increasing role they have across the globe - roles which increasingly go beyond coding into management, structures, analysis and more. CCCK’s new Cybersecurity concentration equips students with the technical and business knowledge needed to secure the high-paying and growing jobs in this field, all without needing to be high-ranking programmers. Portfolio-building and project-based classes ensure a robust resume before graduation, and allow students to demonstrate the skills they need to land the best jobs in the field.

With the field of Data Science now underpinning every industry on the globe, and a reported 97% of businesses investing in improving their data systems, CCCK students pursuing a concentration in Data Science will be learning job-focused skills needed to succeed in this growing industry. Built with the University of Michigan’s Dr. Charles Severance, and structured around the UC Berkeley’s internationally recognized data curriculum structures, graduates will be poised to succeed in an industry expected to grow at 4x the national average over the next decade.

“We are thrilled to provide students with additional options within the Management major that help them learn the skills that employers are asking for,” Professor Melissa Kent said in the release. “These two new concentrations were created with the involvement of experts in the industry and should help prepare our students for exciting careers in these fields.”

Dr. Lara Vanderhoof, Chief Academic Officer added, “I commend our faculty for working to create these new programs that are so relevant to today’s job marketplace. These two new areas of academic study will be highly relevant to the workplace and economy for years to come and I’m excited we have added these to help prepare students for the rapidly changing landscape in the digital age.” These new programs are available starting Fall 2024 through a partnership with the Lower Cost Models Consortium (LCMC) and Rize Education. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West 6th Avenue on the south side.

Right after WW2, Howard Jackson and Bernard King were working for J.S. Dillon &amp; Sons in Wichita and saw a need for a meat locker plant in Hutchinson. They moved here to start that business.

In March of 1946, Howard Jackson hired Oscar Young Construction to build a new building at 13 W. 6th for $12,000. The first photo shows the new Jackson Food Locker at completion.

The second photo shows the business opening in late 1946.

The third photo shows the interior display and sales area.

Business flourished and, by 1955, the company had a staff of eight with four delivery trucks. The fourth photo shows the employees and trucks.

In 1960, Howard's son, Bill, purchased the business from his parents.

In 1995, Michael and Robin Jackson bought the business from Bill.

In 2010, Jeni and Andrew Bryan purchased the business from Mike and Robin Jackson. The fifth photo shows the 13 W. 6th location, now known as Jackson Meat, still flourishing today with Jeni Bryan as owner and operator, and Andrew Bryan as co-owner.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— At a retirement ceremony for HutchCC President Dr. Carter File this week, his predecessor Ed Berger said leadership is about knowing when to take a step back. File took Berger's place in the presidency in July of 2014.&nbsp;

"My succession plans were certainly looking at Carter coming in and picking up the reins where we left off," Berger said at the retirement reception. "It was great to have that opportunity."&nbsp;

File's retirement ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 2 at Stringer Fine Arts Center.&nbsp;

"Mostly I was just honored by the turnout and some of the kind words that people had to say about me," File said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

File will retire from HutchCC effective Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024. He has a more than 24-year career in higher education. File was the college's Vice President of Operations and Finance from 2005-2014.&nbsp;

"When our dean of finance retired, Bill Warner, we knew we wanted to replace Bill with somebody as strong as Bill was," Berger said. "We wanted to replace him with somebody that had great experience as the dean of finance. And so we looked across the community college spectrum and there was one person that really stood out. An individual who was well respected by his colleagues, well respected by other community college presidents, and that was Carter File."&nbsp;

File said he and his wife Tracey have thoughts of moving to the Tampa, Florida area after retirement to be closer to family. However, the move would not be immediate. File said retirement is a bittersweet feeling because he knows he and his wife would be leaving good friends behind if they decide to move.

&nbsp;"We've always just kind of lived our lives as the next adventure, the next thing up," File said. "If we do move to Tampa, we'll look for something to do down there that will keep us busy."

The college announced on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 that File submitted his request to the college board of trustees indicating his intent to retire.&nbsp;

File took Berger's place in the presidency in July of 2014.&nbsp;"My succession plans were certainly looking at Carter coming in and picking up the reins where we left off," Berger said at the retirement reception. "It was great to have that opportunity."&nbsp;File's retirement ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 2 at Stringer Fine Arts Center.&nbsp;"Mostly I was just honored by the turnout and some of the kind words that people had to say about me," File said.&nbsp;&nbsp;File will retire from HutchCC effective Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024. He has a more than 24-year career in higher education. File was the college's Vice President of Operations and Finance from 2005-2014.&nbsp;"When our dean of finance retired, Bill Warner, we knew we wanted to replace Bill with somebody as strong as Bill was," Berger said. "We wanted to replace him with somebody that had great experience as the dean of finance. And so we looked across the community college spectrum and there was one person that really stood out. An individual who was well respected by his colleagues, well respected by other community college presidents, and that was Carter File."&nbsp;File said he and his wife Tracey have thoughts of moving to the Tampa, Florida area after retirement to be closer to family. However, the move would not be immediate. File said retirement is a bittersweet feeling because he knows he and his wife would be leaving good friends behind if they decide to move.&nbsp;"We've always just kind of lived our lives as the next adventure, the next thing up," File said. File ready to embrace retirement

TOPEKA, Kan. — Leadership Kansas, one of the country's oldest and most distinguished statewide leadership programs, on Wednesday announced its Kansas Emerging Leaders (KEL) Class of 2024.

Brittany Inskeep of Joe McGuire Insurance in Hutchinson is part of the class.

KEL is a statewide program designed to enhance and motivate young leaders from various Kansas communities. Each year, Kansans in their 20s and 30s are nominated to apply for the program.

Developed in 2019 based on feedback from the nearly 1,600 Leadership Kansas alumni, LK created KEL to give outstanding young leaders a format to learn more about Kansas and about the opportunities within the state for professional growth.

LK Executive Director Aaron Miller said the 20 individuals selected to participate in the 2024 program reflect Kansas's demographics and geography as well as the state's make up of private and public sectors.

"We are excited to help them begin their journey of leadership and discovery. Upon completion of the program, these young professionals will be better equipped to shoulder important leadership responsibilities in their individual careers and for their respective communities because of their experience and training through Kansas Emerging Leaders," Miller said.

The class will learn about a myriad of topics important to Kansans through five monthly sessions, including:

Learn about Kansas’ business, social, educational, and government issues of our past, how they impact us today, and how they will shape our future.

Build a network of fellow Kansans who are committed to our state’s success.

Meet mentors and connect with Kansas leaders.

Create a pipeline of potential future Leadership Kansas program participants.

The class will visit Dodge City, Hays, KC Metro, Manhattan, Topeka, and Wichita.

To qualify for the program, nominees must work or live in Kansas, be an outstanding leader, who have been involved in campus or community programs and express an interest to stay in Kansas and become more involved.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Beginning Friday, phones will be ringing across the district, as a brief patron survey will begin.

School district officials say the survey of district households will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges, and long-term facility needs.

“This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from a cross-section of our patrons their opinions about our performance, and what our priorities should be for the future,” says Dr. Dawn Johnson, superintendent. “We’ll hear from all geographic parts of the district, people of all different ages, and everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The survey was designed by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm that has worked with school districts across the Midwest.

The calls will be completed by Kansas City-based Market Research Associates, a firm that uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Calling starts on Friday, April 5th&nbsp;and will last for two weeks. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the district’s website starting April 15th.

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete, and the district is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.

“We are very fortunate to live and serve in a community that values our schools,”&nbsp;Johnson says. “If you get called for the survey, please answer and give your honest feedback.”

USD 308 to conduct phone survey starting next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the end of Kansas Cold Weather Rule on April 1, requests for funds are coming in faster than ever to the Hutchinson Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut has become a one stop headquarters for year-round aid and is a location for other organizations. 

Currently, VITA is in the final stages of helping seniors and low income get taxes filed through volunteer help at their building. Most weekdays the Salvation Army also hosts Friendship Meals for seniors; provides headquarters for the Reno County Food Bank; furnishes cooling fans in the summer, blankets and clothing throughout the year, helps disabled and others in need manage assistance funds along with a variety of other year-round aid.

2023 Christmas fund raising came in about $20,000 short of the previous year, which limits year round assistance. As of mid-March the Salvation Army was down about $23,000 for the fiscal year that started last October.

James says the past two years have been challenging and difficult with 2023 coming up short by $40,000 compared with 2021 and 2022. This year they are even further behind where they need to be to help those who come to their building. 

"Growing need, limited resources, pretty well sums up our current situation," said James. United Way of Reno County support continues to be a critical asset to allowing the Salvation Army to help more people.

Along with monetary donations, James says there's a list of personal care items needed to serve an increasing number of requests from those who are homeless. Those who can help boost the supply can drop supplies by the Salvation Army office any weekday between 8 a.m and 5 p.m.

Needed items include bars of soap, small bottles of laundry detergent, toilet paper, diapers sizes 3 through 6, wipes, combs and hairbrushes, deodorant for men and women, shampoo and conditioner.

The National Wheat Yield Contest is organized by the National Wheat Foundation. The 2024 categories include irrigated winter wheat, dryland winter wheat, irrigated spring wheat and dryland spring wheat. The contest will name 26 national winners, including state winners. All national winners will receive a trip to the 2025 Commodity Classic to be held March 2-4, 2025, in Denver.

Contest fields must be at least five continuous acres planted with professionally produced, certified, branded and newly purchased wheat seed. The field must be verified by a third-party supervisor during harvest of the contest field. Entries cost $100, with vouchers available from contest sponsors.&nbsp;

Contest rules also require growers to retain a 10-pound sample of grain from their entry, which will be milled, baked and evaluated for quality if the entry places nationally. For each class, the three highest ranking samples for quality will be recognized and awarded an additional $250.&nbsp;

In last year’s contest, William Noll of Winchester had the top yields for both dryland and irrigated winter wheat categories. His dryland entry of AgriMaxx 516 soft red winter wheat yielded 103.99 bushels per acre, while his irrigated entry of AgriMaxx 505 soft red winter wheat yielded 121.1 bushels per acre. Second prize in the state’s dryland winter wheat category was awarded to Matt Grabbe of Hays with a sample of WestBred WB4792 that yielded 79.18 bushels per acre, the same variety with which he won third place in the previous year’s contest.&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY —Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Watson Kevin Bradford, 51, died Wednesday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 He was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday afternoon. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Mr. Bradford was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Bradford was serving a life sentence, for convictions of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and forgery committed in Leavenworth County, Kansas.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Plans being made for new downtown park

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Wednesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by Harry&nbsp;Neufeldt, 92, Inman, was westbound on Arapaho Road&nbsp; and failed to stop at the stop sign at Kansas 61 Highway.

The pickup struck a northbound 2020 Kia Soul driven by Aung Thiha&nbsp;Kyaw, 31, Salina. After impact the pickup&nbsp;came to rest in the roadway and the Kia came to rest in the median.

&nbsp;Neufeldt was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center where he died.&nbsp; EMS transported Kyaw to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Newfeldt was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MCPHERSON COUNTY — The Kansas Highway Patrol and McPherson County Sheriff's Office are reporting that K-61 was closed for around two hours Wednesday morning at Arapaho Road in McPherson County due to an injury accident.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, troopers Malo, Voss, Fraser, and Rust are actively investigating this two-vehicle crash. Eagle Med is transporting one person to Wesley Hospital in Wichita.

The road was reopened just prior to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"The City has requested that we implement a few things before we open up to the public again," Davis said. "Changing ownership always comes with some new inspections and new regulations. So, there are a couple of things I have to get nailed down in the building. Nothing major, and only things that will make the place overall a safer building for everyone."

The first official day for the re-opening will be next Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. 

"Don't expect to see major changes," Davis added. "Rather, it will be your regular ol' Taco Hut, just with a few new people slinging the tacos."

Davis said they are actively hiring for both days and evenings. Pay starts at $12/hr, but will consider higher pay for qualified candidates. Looking for one full time person and several part timers. People with previous Taco Hut experience are also very welcome.&nbsp;

Taco Hut transition delays reopening

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast said Tuesday that the city has made an offer to a candidate for the permanent City Manager position.

"Word is currently, we have a candidate we've made an offer to, contigent upon an intensive background check," Fast said. "We expect that to come back any day. If that comes back clear, we will probably approve a contract for this individual on the April 16 agenda."

It will still be a few more weeks before the new hire can get to Hutch.

"We've had some discussions on a transitional period, to make sure they are set up for success," Fast said. "I think he'll start the first part of June. Mary Grace, I think we'll keep her as long as she'll stay around and as long as the new city manager would want her to stay around."

The budget process for 2025 is already beginning to take shape, as the city will need to approve a budget in August.

"This is up to him," Fast said. "We, as a council, we hire the city manager. Everything below that, the city manager takes care of."

Compensation for the new hire will come out when the contract is approved by the council.

New City Manager hire waiting on background check

"Harry is a down on his luck, insecure, British shoe salesman," Nowlan said. "Harry finds out that his recently deceased uncle has left him an inheritance of $6 million, but there's a catch. That catch is that he has to take his uncle's corpse on vacation to Monte Carlo."

Another unique feature of the show is that the set dressing will use periaktos. These triangular prisms made of wood are three-sided set backgrounds that will be moved and positioned by the actors during the course of the show. The ten periaktos were constructed by John Harding and painted by Jamie Goble.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Stage 9 bringing Lucky Stiff back to life 

PLEASANTVIEW, Kan.&nbsp;—&nbsp;An annual Reno County celebration is set for Saturday.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1134602624364743">Pleasantview's 2024 Spring Celebration</a> will include a free pancake feed, an antique tractor show, emergency vehicle expo, kids cookie decorating contest, extended store hours and more.&nbsp;

"It's the community of businesses out here in Pleasantview that come together," Glenda Yoder of Glenn's Bulk Food Shoppe and Gospel Book Store said. "And we just want to basically give back to our customers and just offer a free or complimentary event for people to come out and enjoy and see what all of the shopping and all of the stores and all of the businesses in Pleasantview and see what they are all about."

The free pancake feed will start off the celebration behind Stutzman's Greenhouse from 7:30-10:30 a.m.&nbsp;Glenn's Bulk Food Shoppe and Gospel Book Store will hand out one-day coupons at the feed.&nbsp;

"There's all sorts of things going on," Yoder said. "You can come out and shop. You can come out and see what everything's about."&nbsp;
