Peggy Lou Dunlap, 91, Wichita, formerly of Abbyville, passed away Friday, December 17, 2021, at Brookdale East, Wichita. She was born November 29, 1930, in Topeka, KS, to Clifford William and Ernestine Elizabeth (Cummings) Birket.

She was a 1948 graduate of Abbyville High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College and the University of Arizona.

On August 20, 1954, she married Richard Lee Dunlap in Abbyville. Her husband Richard of over 61 years of marriage passed away April 21, 2016.

Peggy and Richard raised their family in Southern California. She was a homemaker and in later years worked as an administrative assistant at Hartwell/Hasco in California. After retiring, they moved back to Kansas and built their retirement home near Abbyville.

Peggy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed painting with oils and acrylics and gave numerous paintings to family and friends. She also enjoyed motorhome traveling, sewing, and watching college basketball. She was an avid KU basketball fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant grandson, Ryan, and siblings, Betty Dunn and Clifford ‘Bud’ Birket.

Survivors include her children, Scott and wife Robyn of Wichita, and April Connelly of Blue Springs, MO; Step grandchildren, Rochelle (Zack) Helgesen and Riley (Aaron) Babbidge; Step great-grandchildren, Brenna, Thor and Keira Helgesen, and Augie and Reagan Babbidge; brother-in-law, Kenneth Dunn of Abbyville; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Abbyville Cemetery with Reverend Christy E. Dew presiding.

Earl Irvan Montford, 83, was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on March 18, 1938, and with family at his side, passed away there on December 17, 2021. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Irvan C. and Opal (Lee) Montford, and infant sister Carolyn Joyce. Earl grew up in Turon, Kansas and, after high school graduation, joined the Army Reserves. He then attended Hutchinson Junior College. In 1960, he married Karen (Wisby) Montford with whom he raised three children. They divorced in 2004. After working a brief time at Cessna in Hutchinson, he began working at the National Cash Register Company (NCR) which was his career for the next 35 years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed life roaming parts of the U.S. in his RV. After many adventures, he settled in Hutchinson for his final years. 

Survivors include two sons Brian, Dallas, Texas, and Brett (Michelle), St. Joseph, Missouri, and a daughter, Deanne Gaede Book, Bellevue, Nebraska, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a sister Norma Lee Smith, Buhler, Kansas, brothers Carl (Barbara), Seattle, Washington, Gary (Jeanie), Overland Park, Kansas, and Leon (Jan), Turon, Kansas, many nieces, nephews, relatives and numerous friends.

Doris graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961, Salt City Business College, and received 2 associate’s degrees from Hutchinson Community College in marketing/retailing and paralegal. She worked as a sales associate at Walmart, from 1989 until she retired in 2019. Generous to a fault, Doris was an avid reader and enjoyed watching movies, working crossword puzzles, and taking pictures.

She is survived by: her children, Carl Showalter (Brandy) of Mineral Wells, TX, Angela Young of Thornton, CO, Abby McMurry (Ed) of Halstead, Amy Sollers (John) of Hutchinson, Andrea Williams (Eric) of Haven; siblings, Ethel Hildebrandt of Fountain Inn, SC, Sandy Taylor (Scott) of Carbondale, Lissa Gardner of Wichita, Stan Hildebrandt (Mary) of Andover; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family members.

Dr. John Richard Melland, Sr., 86, died December 15, 2021, at his home.&nbsp; He was born October 6, 1935, in Hutchinson, to John Arndt and Jeanne Ann (Plouff) Melland.

John graduated from St. Teresa High School, Rockhurst College, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.&nbsp; He enjoyed taking care of many patients over the years at his dental practice.&nbsp; In his spare time, John enjoyed golfing, hunting, and watching his children take part in sporting events.&nbsp; He was a member of Prairie Dunes County Club, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, Knights of Columbus #7279, and Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On March 15, 1957, he married Darlene Ann Pfannenstiel, in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp; She died January 14, 2009, after sharing almost 52 years of marriage.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The parking lot at the Hutchinson Sports Arena is getting a bit of a facelift.

The Hutchinson City Council will consider having the two lots chip sealed during their meeting Tuesday. The low bid for the project is $234,732. The city had originally wanted to mill and overlay the parking lot but the asphalt is only three inches thick and is in too poor of shape for an overlay to last much longer than the current plan. The chip seal project also includes the seal, removing and replacing parking blocks and restriping. The work is expected to last about eight to ten years.&nbsp;

The other alternative and the one that was originally part of the arena renovation project would be to completely rebuild both parking lots at a cost of more than $2,500,000. That would provide parking at the arena for about 50 years.&nbsp;

Discussions with Hutchinson Community College showed a preference to go with the chip seal method. The college will reimburse the city for 25% of the cost. The work is expected to start after the basketball season.

Sports arena parking lot to get some renovation

Carol Marie Mosier, 74, of Hutchinson, died December 15, 2021, at Hospice House. She was born June 22, 1947, in Monmouth, IL, to Russell G. and Lillian M. (Johnson) White.

After graduating from Stronghurst High School in Illinois, Carol attended Sterling College, where she received her sociology degree. She later pursued an additional degree in teaching. Carol taught school for several years before going to work for Reno County Health Department. She then became a job placement counselor at Kansas State S.R.S. until she retired.

Carol enjoyed the simple things in life such as baking, reading, and spending time with family. She absolutely loved being a grandma and was affectionately known to her grandkids as “NASCAR Namo”. On Mondays, while in Arizona, you would find her at breakfast, enjoying coffee and the company of her two sisters.

Carol was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church in Green Valley, AZ, where she was actively engaged with the kitchen staff. Carol was known and loved by many through her acts of service. While living in Hutchinson, Carol attended CrossPoint Church.

On December 29, 1972, she married Rodney K. Mosier, in Stronghurst, IL. They later divorced, but remained good friends.

Carol is survived by: her children, Matt Mosier (Deanna) of McPherson, Karla Kuhn of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Tracy Mason, Judah, Israel, and Marah Kuhn, Jhordan and Jhaidyn Brown; sisters, Mildred Irwin (John), of Allegan, MI, Miriam Sawtell of Green Valley, AZ; former husband, Rod Mosier of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Mary Alice Dowell; and brothers Lyman and Lanny White.

Rosie attended Hutchinson schools and graduated from beauty college in Michigan. She worked as a waitress at the Hutchinson Town Club for 30 years until retirement. Rosie’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.

Charles Todd Potucek, 62, died December 8, 2021, at his home in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born August 15, 1959, in Dodge City, KS, the son of Charles W. Potucek, Jr. and Patricia Ruth (Pudden) Potucek.&nbsp;

Todd was a 1978 graduate of Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; Following high school, Todd joined the United States Navy.&nbsp; He served four years active duty and four years in the Naval Reserve.&nbsp; He received an Associate of Arts Degree in Applied Science from Kansas City Kansas Community College in 2010.&nbsp;

A precision sheet metal worker, Todd was retired from several manufacturing companies throughout the state.&nbsp; He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Todd is survived by:&nbsp; one brother, Scott and Anne Potucek of Hutchinson; four sisters, Monica and Mike Bryant of Santa Rosa, CA, Marcia and Shawn Streepy of Shawnee, KS, Lesle and Doug Knop of Paola, KS, and Shannon and Paul Elliott of Kingwood, TX; 13 nieces and nephews; and 23 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Todd requested burial at sea.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held at a future date.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.

Dragons No. 6 in men's NJCAA poll

Bonnie Sue Dahlman, who returned to Hutchinson, after raising a family, working for social justice, and other adventures, died on December 10, 2021, of natural causes. She was 84 years old.&nbsp; Bonnie was born in Columbus, Ohio, on September 9, 1937. Her father was Clarence “Carl” Lovejoy East, an insurance claim adjuster originally from Tilden, Illinois. Her mother was Cora May Tague, originally from Augusta, Kansas. They soon moved from Columbus to Hutchinson.&nbsp; As she grew up in Hutchinson, Bonnie’s favorite memories included frequent visits to a local chicken hatchery and time shared with the family of Roy and Margaret Dunmire at their farmhouse on Lorraine Street.&nbsp; In 1956, Bonnie married an industrial engineering student and two years later, they were living in Newton, Iowa. They had two sons – Steven Ray Dahlman, born in 1961, and Alan Lee Dahlman, born in 1963.&nbsp; Bonnie was an active volunteer. She was a coordinator for a volunteer organization that helped the disadvantaged and elderly. She worked on presidential campaigns and managed the campaign of a candidate for the Iowa Senate. She tutored math students at a local elementary school.&nbsp; She was a member of the Newton Presbyterian Church, National Organization for Women, and League of Women Voters.&nbsp; In 1987, then living in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Bonnie graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree.&nbsp; The next year, she moved to Istanbul, Turkey, where she taught English to engineering students at Istanbul Technical University. She was also a tutor for a family in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul and she volunteered her time to help Kurdish refugees in Turkey.&nbsp; By 2001, she had returned to Hutchinson. She took courses from Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas, and Newman University in Wichita.&nbsp; Her volunteer work continued, providing clerical support to the American Red Cross in Hutchinson as it responded to natural disasters that included Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Wilma, and the Greensburg tornado.&nbsp; As a volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program at South Hutchinson Elementary School, she helped Hispanic students with English, math, and other issues they had besides schoolwork.&nbsp; She was on the Reno County Health Department Pandemic Flu Board and a volunteer for Hospice &amp; Homecare of Reno County.&nbsp; She did what she could to advance social justice and was proud to call herself an advocate for civil rights, equal rights for women, and human rights of refugees.&nbsp; She was a member of the Partridge Community Church. Most recently, she was a resident of Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson.&nbsp; Bonnie is predeceased by her mother, Cora, in 1999, and her father, Carl, in 1969. Ronald Dean O’Hara, 81, of Hutchinson, died December 11, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born February 2, 1940, in Hutchinson, to William and Helen (Epperson) O’Hara.

Ron graduated from Partridge High School in 1958, and attended Hutchinson Community College, Emporia State University, Sterling College, and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1963. He was a farmer and worked at the Partridge Co-op. Ron assumed many volunteer positions, including: the Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Public Library, Foster Grandparents for South Hutchinson Elementary, Partridge volunteer fireman, Partridge Community Church Treasurer, and Center Township Board. He was a member of Partridge Community Church.

On September 12, 1965, Ron married Judith Ann Grossardt, in Hutchinson. They shared 56 years together.

He is survived by: wife, Judy O’Hara, Hutchinson; daughter, Julie Edgar (WC), Phoenix, Arizona; son, Patrick O’Hara, Arcadia, Missouri; grandchildren, Savannah Edgar, Brooklyn, New York, Emily, Kate, and Kevin O’Hara, Farmington, Missouri; sister, Carol Pitzer, Springfield, Missouri.

Ron was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Bill O’Hara; and sister, Marcy Henderson.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Partridge Community Church, with Pastor Sheridan Irsik officiating. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

The Board approved two new positions related to Enrollment Management, Advising and Career Development. The Director of Enrollment Management and Advising Services will provide leadership and develop strategies for the college’s ongoing enrollment and retention initiatives. There is no gain of positions as these positions are created from the consolidation of existing, vacant positions.

Also Thursday, the board approved a number of bids for various purchases and projects. The first is for a truck driving simulator from L3Harris at a cost of $98,400. The simulator is being paid for with a grant.

The board also approved a bid from Lampton Welding for equipment at a cost of $100,203; new communication equipment from Weis Fire and Safety for the fire science department for $25,170; and an upgraded lighting and sound system for the Stringer Fine Arts Center. The bid for the lighting from Kent AV totals $108,475 and the bid for the sound system comes from Peach Production Services for $107,390.

The next meeting of the board will be Thursday, January 13. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater.&nbsp; The public is invited to attend.

HutchCC women win in Colby Monday

The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors would like to announce the assistant coaches for the 2022 Kansas Shrine Bowl. The assistant coaches are chosen based on the success of their season, as well as eligibility limitations and coach availability. The coaching staff for the 49th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl features 14 of the most talented and respected coaches in the state. The 49th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played at Carnie Smith Stadium, on the campus of Pittsburg State University, on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022, at 7 p.m.

The 2022 Head Coaches, announced earlier this year, are Basehor-Linwood’s Rod Stallbaumer for the East and Wichita Collegiate’s Troy Black, leading the West. &nbsp;

The East coaching staff had a combined record of 66-12 in 2021, including State Championships from Rider and Hammes. The East staff has a combined six Kansas Shrine Bowl coaching appearances, Derick Hammes served as an assistant in 2016 and returned to lead the East in 2017. Rod Stallbaumer is at the helm of the East for the second time, after serving as the Head Coach in 2009 while at Lyndon. Stallbaumer also assisted the East in 2008, 2014, and 2021. The East coaches also include two former players, Derick Hammes (1989 East, Nemaha Valley) and Neal Philpot (2000 West – Norton).

Assistant coaches for the West team are Ene Akpan (6A – Wichita East), Tony Crough (5A – Hays), Steve Warner (4A – Buhler), Jordan Echer (3A – Concordia), Brad Gober (2A – Beloit) and Lance Sawyer (1A – Inman). &nbsp;The West Coaching staff had a combined 62-19 record in 2021, including two State Runner-Up finishes in Beloit and Inman. The staff also has a combined four Kansas Shrine Bowl coaching appearances. Head Coach Troy Black returns to the Kansas Shrine Bowl sideline after serving as an assistant in 2021 and 1999 and Buhler’s Warner will return after stints in 2009 and 2014. Hays High’s Tony Crough also returns to the Kansas Shrine Bowl after playing for the West in 1999 out of Garden City.

All Shrine Bowl events are produced and presented to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children, now known as Shriners Children’s.&nbsp; Shriners Children’s offers care for a range of orthopedic issues, as well as care for burn injuries, craniofacial conditions, spine care and spinal cord injuries, colorectal and gastrointestinal care, and sports medicine. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay. The Kansas Shrine Bowl is an all-star high school senior, East vs. West, football game put on each year in Kansas, by the Kansas Shrine. It is a 501(c) 3 non-profit charity that produces annual events and related activities, with net proceeds benefiting Shriners Children’s. The Kansas Shrine Bowl has sent over $3M to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The game has been played throughout Kansas each summer since 1974. Host cities have included Lawrence, Manhattan, Wichita, Topeka, Hays, Emporia, Pittsburg, Dodge City and Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Warner, Sawyer on West coaching staff for 2022 Kansas Shrine Bowl

Billy Frank Campbell, 70, of Hutchinson, died December 10, 2021, at his home. He was born August 13, 1951, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to William and Jimmie (Dutton) Campbell.

Billy graduated high school in 1969, and in 1994, earned a degree from Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Army, Special Forces during the Vietnam War. Before retiring, Billy was a private surgical scrub tech for Dr. Tejano and delivery driver. He enjoyed bowling.

On June 9, 1989, Billy married BeLinda Dawn Ratcliffe, in Hutchinson.

He is survived by: wife, BeLinda Campbell, Hutchinson; seven daughters, including: Christeen Jones, Salina, Heather Campbell, Orlando, Florida; stepson, Alex Radcliffe, Wichita; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Billy was preceded in death by: his parents, brother, and stepson.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no services at this time. Arrangements made with Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

He enjoyed bowling.On June 9, 1989, Billy married BeLinda Dawn Ratcliffe, in Hutchinson.He is survived by: wife, BeLinda Campbell, Hutchinson; seven daughters, including: Christeen Jones, Salina, Heather Campbell, Orlando, Florida; stepson, Alex Radcliffe, Wichita; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.Billy was preceded in death by: his parents, brother, and stepson.Cremation has taken place. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will go over a number of bids for various projects when it meets on Thursday.

The first is for a truck driving simulator from L3Harris at a cost of $98,400. The simulator is part of the new truck driving courses at the college. The simulator is being paid for with a grant.

The simulator is being paid for with a grant.Also, the board will be asked to approve a bid from Lampton Welding for equipment at a cost of $100,203; new communication equipment from Weis Fire and Safety for the fire science department for $25,170; and an upgraded lighting and sound system for the Stringer Fine Arts Center. The bid for the lighting from Kent AV totals $108,475 and the bid for the sound system comes from Peach Production Services for $107,390.Also Thursday, the board will go over two new positions for the college. One is for a new Director of Enrollment and Advising Services.
