Sports arena parking lot to get some renovation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The parking lot at the Hutchinson Sports Arena is getting a bit of a facelift.

The Hutchinson City Council will consider having the two lots chip sealed during their meeting Tuesday. The low bid for the project is $234,732. The city had originally wanted to mill and overlay the parking lot but the asphalt is only three inches thick and is in too poor of shape for an overlay to last much longer than the current plan. The chip seal project also includes the seal, removing and replacing parking blocks and restriping. The work is expected to last about eight to ten years.

The other alternative and the one that was originally part of the arena renovation project would be to completely rebuild both parking lots at a cost of more than $2,500,000. That would provide parking at the arena for about 50 years.

Discussions with Hutchinson Community College showed a preference to go with the chip seal method. The college will reimburse the city for 25% of the cost. The work is expected to start after the basketball season.
