Monday marked the official start of practice for high school winter sports across Kansas, with athletes in sports ranging from basketball to wrestling taking the first steps toward the new season.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) recognizes four activities that open practice today: basketball, boys swimming &amp; diving, Esports and wrestling.

KSHSAA winter sports practices underway

The Kansas Volleyball Association released its all-state teams for Class 6A through Class 1A Division II on Sunday.

In Class 4A, McPherson seniors Brooke Doile and Ava Romero were named to the all-state second team. Buhler senior Emerson Waldren earned honorable-mention recognition.

In Class 3A, Halstead senior Katharine Engel and Hesston sophomore Addyson Reiff were selected to the second team. Engel’s teammate, junior Bailey Bernal, was named to the third team.

In Class 2A, Sedgwick senior Kalyn Sampson and Moundridge senior Cammi Unruh were both second-team honorees. Inman junior Taylor Froese and Moundridge junior Hattie Hecox received honorable-mention honors.

🏐 Local stars earn Kansas Volleyball Association all-state honors

DENVER (AP) — Wil Lutz kicked five field goals, including&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1990218327000797565">a 35-yard game-winner</a>&nbsp;as time expired Sunday, pushing the Denver Broncos past the Kansas City Chiefs 22-19 for their eighth straight victory.

The Broncos (9-2) all but buried the Chiefs (5-5) in the AFC West, which Kansas City has won ever year since 2016. Chiefs coach Andy Reid fell to 27-5 following a bye week, counting the playoffs and his time with Philadelphia.

Bo Nix set up the game-winning kick with a 32-yard pass to Troy Franklin that got Denver to the Kansas City 15 with under a minute remaining.

Patrick Mahomes gave Kansas City its only lead on a 21-yard touchdown toss to Travis Kelce — the veteran tight end's 84th career TD, one more than previous Chiefs franchise record-holder Priest Holmes. That put the Chiefs up 19-16, but Harrison Butker's extra point was blocked by Frank Crum.

The Broncos tied it at 19-all on Lutz's 54-yarder with 4:10 remaining.

Denver's defense forced Kansas City to go three-and-out when Ja'Quan McMillian sacked Mahomes on third-and-10 from the Chiefs 36.

The Broncos chewed up the final 2:59 by driving 58 yards in 10 plays. They won their 11th straight game at Empower Field, where they haven't lost since October 2024.

Kelce's TD followed a 46-yard pass-interference flag at the Denver 29 on cornerback Riley Moss on an underthrown pass from Mahomes to Hollywood Brown. That came on third-and-19 from the Kansas City 29.

The Broncos' eight-game winning streak is their longest since 2012, when Peyton Manning led Denver to 11 consecutive victories. As a result, the Chiefs' nine-year reign atop the AFC West is in jeopardy.

Jaleel McLaughlin, playing in place of injured starter J.K. Dobbins, who underwent season-ending foot surgery last week, bullied his way in from 4 yards out to break a 6-6 tie in the third quarter.

The Chiefs seized the momentum, however, when Mahomes found Tyquan Thornton for a 61-yard gain to the Denver 11. That set up Kareem Hunt's 2-yard run that tied it at 13. That was KC's first touchdown at Empower Field in 11 quarters.

Both offenses struggled to move the ball against stingy defenses, and the first half featured four short field goals and ended in a 6-6 tie.

Chiefs: LG Kingsley Suamataia left in the third quarter to be checked for a concussion.

Broncos: Rookie WR Pat Bryant was evaluated for a concussion after his 48-yard catch with 26 seconds left in the third quarter. ... The Broncos were without several starters, including CB Pat Surtain II (pectoral), ILB Alex Singleton (testicular cancer) and Dobbins (left foot), who will miss the rest of the regular season.

🏈 Broncos beat Chiefs on Lutz's last-second field goal

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference and ESPN announced Sunday morning that Kansas State's game this Saturday at Utah will kick at 3 p.m. (CT) and be televised on ESPN2.

This is the first ever meeting between the Wildcats and Utes as Utah is in its second season in the Big 12. The Wildcats will be in search of their first win in the state of Utah after going 0-4 in Provo (BYU) and 0-1 in Logan (Utah State).

Following the game at Utah, K-State hosts Colorado on Saturday, November 29, for the Wildcats' annual Senior Day contest. Tickets to the game against the Buffaloes can be purchased online at www.kstatesports.com/tickets or by phone at 1-800-221-CATS.

🏈 K-State's game at Utah will kick at 3 p.m.

LAWRENCE, KAN. – The Kansas Jayhawks will close out its Big 12 Conference road schedule on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. CT at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, the Big 12 Conference announced on Sunday. The game will be televised on FS1.

The meeting between the Jayhawks and the Cyclones will be the 105th all-time meeting in a series that dates back to 1898. The long-time conference rivals have played in each season since 1932, with Kansas leading the series 53-45-6. Kansas has won the last three meetings, including a 28-21 win over Iowa State in Ames on Nov. 4, 2023.

Saturday's game against Iowa State will be the third 11 a.m. kickoff of the 2025 season and Kansas' second game on FS1.

The Jayhawks will enter the showdown against the Cyclones at 5-5 (3-4 Big 12) in search of bowl eligibility for the third time over the last four seasons. The game will serve as Kansas' final Big 12 road contest and the 11th of 12 games this season.

Iowa State is coming off a 20-17 come from behind win at TCU on Nov. 8, as the Cyclones improved to 6-4 (3-4 Big 12) on the season. The game will serve as Iowa State's senior day.

Freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2025-26/bios/brown_whitney_uv6o">Whitney Brown</a>'s efforts on both sides of the floor powered the 19th-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team to a decisive victory in the Hutch Women's "BreatheFire" Classic on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their third game in a row, defeating the Otero Rattlers 82-59 to close the non-conference portion of their schedule.

Hutchinson will take a 5-1 record into its KJCCC opener against Garden City on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Brown scored a season-high 19 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line to lead the Blue Dragons. Brown tied a season high with six assists. Defensively, Brown had three steals as the Blue Dragons forced an opponent-season-high 25 turnovers which were converted into a 25-12 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.

Two other Blue Dragons scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack. Ten of 11 Blue Dragons to play scored in the game.

Otero shot 39.0 percent (23 of 59 overall), going 12 of 28 from 3-point range and 1 of 2 from the foul line.

Itzasne Fernandez Arguello had a team-high 15 points to lead Otero. Brooklyn Kaiser hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

The Rattlers hit 5 of 10 3-pointers in the opening quarter and built a 21-16 lead after the first period. The Dragons started the game shooting only 6 of 18 from the floor.

The Blue Dragons immediately turned that deficit around as McPherson hit a pair of 3-pointers and sophomore Delora Precop scored her first points of the season in a 9-0 Hutchinson run over the first 3:35 of the quarter. McPherson's second 3-pointer gave the Dragons a 25-21 lead with 6:25 remaining in the half.

The Dragons extended their start to the second quarter into an 18-2 run. Barber's transition layup with 3:01 remaining upped the Dragon lead to 34-23. The Blue Dragons outscored Otero 23-6 in the second quarter, limiting the Ratters to 3 of 12 shooting and no 3-pointers. The Dragons led 39-27 at halftime.

⚽ No. 13 Kansas earns 20th win with 3-0 sweep over Kansas State

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Kansas State forced five turnovers in a 14-6 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday.

All of the Wildcats' points came off of those turnovers.

“Our guys showed up and our guys made play after play after play," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said of his defense.

The offense wasn't so good. Kansas State, which had averaged 34.2 points in its previous five games, was held to 284 yards. Despite that, the Wildcats held on for their third win in four games.

Kansas State, a 19 1/2-point favorite according to BetMGM, didn't care about the margin of victory. Klieman lost his previous three trips to Oklahoma State as the Wildcats' coach.

“This is a hard place to play, so we’re going to enjoy this win," he said. "I’m not apologizing for a win in Stillwater because it’s dang hard to win here.”

Avery Johnson passed for 177 yards and Joe Jackson added 69 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Wildcats (5-5, 4-3 Big 12), who need one more win to become bowl eligible.

Zane Flores passed for 233 yards for Oklahoma State (1-9, 0-7), but he threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles. Oklahoma State has lost nine straight, and seven straight under interim coach Doug Meacham.

“We just want it so bad for these kids," Meacham said. "You’ve got to look them in the eye every day. And they go to it, they work hard and they believe what you tell them and you sell them on an idea and a scheme. They believe in you, and you go out there and you fall short. Just like eventually, it kind of wears you out, you know what I mean?”

Kansas State did not score until eight minutes into the second quarter. The Wildcats got a first down by penalty after it appeared the Cowboys stopped them on a fourth-and-1, and Jayce Brown caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Johnson on the next play. The extra point put Kansas State up 7-6 — a score that held up at halftime.

An interception by Oklahoma State's Parker Robertson early in the third quarter set the Cowboys up deep in Kansas State territory. But Flores fumbled when stripped by Cody Stufflebean, and Kansas State's Zashon Rich recovered to preserve Kansas State's lead.

Kansas State's Jackson ran 15 yards for a touchdown on a fourth-and-1 play to put the Wildcats up 14-6 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats converted two fourth downs on the drive.

“A field goal, in my mind, was not going to do it,” Klieman said. "We were not going to try to win that game 10-6. We needed to get up 14-6 and make them score. So I thought they were going to have a hard time getting in the end zone.”

The Cowboys reached the Kansas State 26 on their final possession before turning the ball over on downs in the final minute.

Kansas State: The Wildcats played poorly overall but showed enough grit to pull through. The timely plays saved Klieman from an embarrassing loss in a season that began with high expectations.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys outgained Kansas State by 89 yards, but made too many mistakes to claim their first win under Meacham.

Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon was added to the Ring of Honor in Boone Pickens Stadium at halftime.

Blackmon won the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s top receiver in 2010 and 2011. He is one of just two players to win the award twice. He had 253 catches for 3,564 yards and 42 touchdowns during his college career and was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Oklahoma State outside linebacker Malik Charles was injured in the second half after running into a Kansas State player with his head down.

“I think it was more preventative and just being careful than anything, what it felt like," Meacham said. "But he had something -- you can’t just assume he’s okay. But I think it was a little bit more precautionary.”

HIGHLAND, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson Community College football team clinched at least a share of the Jayhawk Conference title and extended multiple program win streaks Saturday with a 49-7 road victory over Highland at Porter Family Stadium.

The Blue Dragons (9-0, 5-0 KJCCC) pushed their overall winning streak to 13 games and their road streak to 25. Hutchinson can secure the outright league title next Saturday when it hosts Garden City in the regular-season finale at Gowans Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

Hutchinson controlled all phases, piling up 420 yards of offense, including a season-high 258 rushing yards, while holding the ball for more than 36 minutes. Defensively, the Dragons limited Highland (0-10, 0-6) to 115 total yards and minus-5 rushing. The Scotties converted 0 of 12 third-down attempts and had only 35 combined yards outside of a single 75-yard scoring drive in the third quarter.

Backup quarterback Hudson Ferralez sparked the offense behind center, completing 10 of 15 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown while adding 44 rushing yards and a 15-yard score. Starter Christian Johnson added 43 passing yards and rushed for a 9-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Freshman running back Kade Smith led Hutchinson with 54 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Rashaud Hurt ran for 38 yards and a 24-yard score, while Ferralez and Christian Johnson also found the end zone. Freshman tight end Jabari Harris recorded his first career catch, a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Dragons produced eight scoring drives, including field goals of 25 and 21 yards by Alejandro de la Poza.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Behind career nights from KaMyra Barber and Kaia Smith, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team rolled to an 86-68 victory over Murray State College on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons improved to 4-1, while Murray State dropped to 3-2.

Barber delivered a career-high 23 points, going 9 of 18 from the floor and 5 of 5 at the free-throw line, while adding seven rebounds and five assists. Smith added her own career best with 14 points off the bench.

Noelle Anthon added 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds.

Hutchinson set the tone early with a 21-14 first-quarter lead and only trailed for a total of eight seconds the entire game. The Blue Dragons shot 49.3% from the field and assisted on 19 of 33 made baskets. Jaden Wilson added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Murray State’s Jordyn McNeal kept the Aggies within reach, scoring a game-high 22 points and going 11 of 14 at the free-throw line. Emily Steven scored 17, while Aniah Richard added 12.

Hutchinson will close the Hutch Women's Classic on Saturday when it hosts Otero at 4 p.m. in the Sports Arena.

The Hutchinson Community College football team returns to action this week after the season's second bye week and does so on the road to face the Highland Scotties.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (8-0, 4-0 KJCCC) and the Scotties (0-9, 0-5) will been at Porter Family Stadium in Highland for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Scottie Sports Network, a pay-per-view service.

As the Blue Dragons return to action this week, they have two active and significant winning streaks rolling. The Dragons have now won 12 games in a row, which is the fourth-longest winning streak in program history. Hutchinson is 5-0 on the road this season and have won 24 consecutive true road contests that date back to the 2021 season.

Since 2006, trips to Highland haven't always gone according to plan. Since that 2006 season, the Blue Dragons are just 4-5 at Kessinger Field/Porter Family Stadium. That included the Scotties' first-ever win in the series in 2006 and a 29-27 upset of the Blue Dragons when Hutchinson was ranked No. 1 in 2019.

The Blue Dragons extended their current win streaks two weeks ago with a 27-12 victory over No. 9 Butler in El Dorado. That win was Hutchinson's fourth over an NJCAA Top 10 opponent this season.

Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/johnson_christian_b2h0">Christian Johnson</a>&nbsp;rushed for two touchdowns and threw for 156 yards, while&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/smith_kade_2uit">Kade Smith</a>&nbsp;made his season debut with 98 rushing yards on 25 carries and a 5-yard touchdown.

Defensively, M.J. Graham had two interceptions and M.J. Harrell had a fumble recovery to lead the Hutchinson defense, which now leads the NJCAA in scoring defense allowing 9.9 points per game.

Highland comes off a near upset of No. 14 Garden City, falling to the Bronc- busters 20-13 last Saturday in Highland. Scotties' running back T.J. Porter rushed for 161 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns, including a 3-yard scoring run with 5:01 to play to cut the Highland deficit to 20-13. Porter was named the KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week for that performance.

During the week leading up to the game with Hutchinson, the Scottie athletic department made some coaching staff changes and named Cameron McGarry the interim head football coach.

The Blue Dragons enter the final two weeks of the regular season as the only undefeated team in the KJCCC and are one of two undefeated teams remaining in the NJCAA (No. 3 Tyler is 9-0 entering the SWJCFC playoffs this week. The Blue Dragons will close the regular season next Saturday at Gowans Stadium against the Garden City Broncbusters.

McPherson High School announces 2025 Wall of Fame Class

&nbsp; WICHITA, Kan. —&nbsp;Wichita State Athletics announced today that Mike Kennedy, the legendary play-by-play Voice of the Shockers, will retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, marking the close of a historic 46-year broadcasting career with the program.

Kennedy, 77, began calling Shocker men's basketball full time during the storied 1980-81 Elite Eight season and has since become one of the most enduring and respected voices in college athletics. On Nov. 17, 2023, he reached a remarkable milestone, calling his 1,400th consecutive Wichita State men's basketball game—a streak that stands as one of the longest in the nation.

Over nearly five decades, Kennedy has chronicled the full arc of Wichita State history, including NCAA Tournament runs, conference championships, postseason triumphs, and countless memorable moments across basketball, baseball, volleyball and football. His signature cadence, deep institutional knowledge, and steady presence have connected generations of Shocker fans to the teams they love.

"This has not been an easy decision, as you can imagine, but after a great deal of thought and consideration, I know in my heart, it's the right time to take this step," Kennedy said. "At the forefront of my decision is a desire to be able to spend more time with my family. I have been truly blessed to do something I love for a university I love for 46 years now. Over that time, there have been so many great moments and memories, but above all, has been the opportunity to develop so many longstanding relationships and friendships with coaches and administrators, student-athletes, fellow broadcasters, and the fans. Shocker Nation, your support, encouragement, and kind words are a huge part of what's made my work and my life, so enjoyable and so gratifying, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — P.J. Haggerty scored 23 points, Khamari McGriff 21 and Nate Johnson 20 as Kansas State built a big lead before hanging on to edge California 99-96 on Thursday night.

David Castillo added 16 points on four 3-pointers for the Wildcats (3-0), who shot 64% and made 9 of 18 3-point tries.

Chris Bell made 7 of 9 from the arc and scored 27 points and Dai Dai Ames hit 5 of 6 3s for 25 points for Cal (3-1), which shot 56% and made 15 of 28 3-point attempts. Justin Pippen added 14 points.

The Wildcats led 55-34 at halftime and were up 24 early in the second half before the Golden Bears rallied behind the 3-point shooting of Ames and Bell, who combined for 39 points after the break. Ames hit five 3s over the first 10 minutes of the second half then Bell made five in the final 4 1/2 minutes.

Bell's last 3-pointer made it a six-point game with 38 seconds left. The Wildcats made just 1 of 6 free throws in the final half-minute but a couple buckets from Semetri Carr weren't enough to bring the Golden Bears all the way back.

Kansas State shot 68% and made 6 of 8 from the arc in taking a 21-point halftime lead behind 11 points from Castillo and 10 each from Haggerty and McGriff. Haggerty went over 1,500 career points.

Cal is home against Presbyterian on Tuesday.

🏀 K-State builds 24-point lead before holding on to beat Cal 

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kenyon Giles scored 24 points to help Wichita State defeat Loyola Chicago 95-74 on Thursday.

Giles shot 7 for 8 from beyond the arc and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line for the Shockers (3-0). Michael Gray Jr. scored 17 points, going 5 of 11 (5 for 10 from 3-point range). Will Berg shot 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line to finish with 13 points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Major League Baseball tonight announced its First and Second All-MLB Teams. Kansas City’s&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was named First Team All-MLB at shortstop for the second consecutive season.&nbsp;

Major League Baseball introduced the All-MLB Team Awards in 2019 to give a more comprehensive honor that covered the full breadth of a season, complementing the All-Star Game selections that are awarded just past the season’s halfway point. Voters were asked only to consider performance during the regular season when casting their ballots. Fans accounted for 50% of the voting for the All-MLB Team, with a panel of experts taking the other 50%.

Witt Jr. has already been recognized this offseason with a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Platinum Glove Award, a&nbsp;RawlingsGold Glove Award and was named the Silver Slugger Award winner among American League shortstops.

Witt Jr. led the Majors this season in hits (184) for the second consecutive year, becoming the first player to accomplish that feat (excluding 2020) since&nbsp;Whit Merrifield&nbsp;did so for the Royals from 2018-19. Witt Jr. also led the Majors with 47 doubles in 2025.

Among Major League shortstops, Witt Jr. ranked 1st in hits, doubles, extra-base hits (76) and stolen bases (38), 2nd in slugging percentage (.501) and OPS (.852), 3rd in runs (99) and 4th in RBI (88).&nbsp;

On defense, Witt Jr. tied for the Major League lead among all players in 2025 with 24 Outs Above Average, according to&nbsp;Baseball Savant. He made 153 starts at shortstop and ranked 4th at the position in assists (382). Among American League shortstops, his 10 errors in 578 chances were 2nd fewest at the position (min. 125 starts).

Witt Jr. is the first player in Major League history to record at least 20 home runs and 30 steals in each of his first four seasons. He’s one of four players ever to record at least 100 HR and 100 steals through four seasons, joining&nbsp;Bobby Bonds,&nbsp;Darryl Strawberryand&nbsp;Julio Rodríguez.

Through four big league seasons, Witt Jr., 25, is a two-time All-Star, a two-time&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award winner, a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Platinum Glove Award winner, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, a Major League batting champion and now has twice been named First Team All-MLB at shortstop.&nbsp;

 </figure>By <a href="mailto:sean.boston@eaglemedia.com">SEAN BOSTON</a> Hutch PostSTERLING, Kan. — A pair of long postseason droughts and a familiar matchup headline Friday night’s Class 1A state quarterfinal at Smisor Stadium, where undefeated Sterling hosts surging Hutchinson Trinity Catholic at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the state semifinals to face either Moundridge or Smith Center on the west side of the bracket.The meeting is a rematch of a district game played just three weeks ago, one Sterling won 34–12 on its home field. But both coaching staffs agree that little from that night will carry over as the stakes rise dramatically.Sterling enters at 10-0, the program’s best start since the Black Bears’ legendary 1982 season, when they went 12-0 en route to a Class 2A state championship. Their 10 wins are the most since 1992. Trinity Catholic, meanwhile, is 8-2 and enjoying its best season since a 9-2 finish and quarterfinal appearance in 2018.For both programs, Friday marks an opportunity to break decades-long droughts. Sterling hasn’t reached the semifinals since 1982; Trinity’s last appearance came in 1979, when the Celtics went 13-0 and claimed the Class 1A title.Trinity enters the quarterfinals with momentum after back-to-back playoff victories over Plainville and Republic County. The Celtics’ 43–14 road win last week in Belleville was their most balanced offensive performance of the season, piling up 310 rushing yards and 167 passing yards. Junior running back Luke Kerns delivered 179 yards on the ground, while quarterback Drew Dechant accounted for four touchdowns, including a 65-yard strike to Kaid McElgunn.Head coach Jordan Bell said his team traveled with focus and purpose.“It was a well-rounded win,” Bell said. “Our offensive line has played extremely well the last couple of weeks, and our defense continues to play really, really well. It was a long trip, but a business-like approach.”Friday’s trip is much shorter, just 30 minutes, compared to the two-hour bus ride to Bellville. This trip brings a second shot at a Sterling team Bell believes is the most complete in Class 1A.“They’ve got the best players and the best team right now in 1A for a reason,” he said. “We can’t turn the ball over, and we missed too many tackles last time. It comes down to blocking, tackling and taking care of the football.”Bell said last year’s early postseason exit has fueled this group, which had dropped its previous two regional games by a combined five points.“Experience is huge,” he said. “Losing in those rounds was a big motivator. Getting past that regional round was a major goal for this senior group.”Across the field, Sterling has dominated its way to 10-0 behind a powerful rushing attack and a defense that has delivered key early stops. Last week’s 53–14 win over Marion featured a 270-yard, four-touchdown performance from senior running back Zane Farney, along with two rushing scores from quarterback Logan Isaac. The Bears led 33–6 by halftime and triggered a running clock early in the third quarter.Farney has rushed for 1,926 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2025, surpassing the 100-yard mark in all 10 games. He's now at 6,312 rushing yards and 84 touchdowns in his four-year career with the Black Bears.Head coach Brent Schneider said his team showed maturity and composure from the opening whistle.“I was proud of our kids for coming out with the intensity they did,” Schneider said. “Once our offense started clicking, things really got rolling.”Friday will mark Sterling’s fourth straight home game, a stretch that Schneider said has energized the town while keeping his team grounded.“Our community has been awesome,” he said. “But our kids are locked in. We’re not looking ahead. Trinity is always one of the hardest-playing teams we face, and we know we’ll get their best.”Schneider expects adjustments on both sides after the first meeting and cautioned against assuming Sterling’s regular-season win predicts much about Friday’s outcome.“Trinity always throws unique looks at us,” he said. “They’re physical, well-coached and good at what they do. People see Zane’s numbers and think stopping him is the key, but our offensive line is a weapon, our A-backs are weapons, Logan can throw it when we need to. We have options.”Sterling’s rise under Schneider has been as much about culture as it has been about game planning.“We talked early on about building a winning culture before the wins started,” Schneider said. “We love the success, but it’s about leading young men and doing things the right way. That’s what I’m most proud of.”Both coaches point to similar keys: physicality, discipline, eliminating turnovers and limiting explosive plays. Trinity wants to control the ball and force a fourth-quarter game. Sterling wants to establish its rhythm early and dictate tempo with its speed and power on the ground.With both communities hungry for their first semifinal appearance in more than 40 years, the atmosphere at Smisor Stadium is expected to be electric. Trinity is seeking a breakthrough after years of knocking on the door. Sterling is looking to keep a dream season alive.
