DERBY, Kan. — Derby wide receiver Michael Castillo scored three touchdowns and the Panthers forced three interceptions in a dominant 51-7 victory over the Hutchinson Salthawks Friday night at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers (3-2) limited Hutchinson to just 98 total yards while scoring on offense, defense and special teams in their 11th straight win over the Salthawks. Quarterback Blade Clark threw three touchdown passes and added a rushing score, while Derby’s defense produced a pick-six and two more takeaways to spark the rout.

After Hutchinson (3-2) recovered a fumble on the game’s opening play, Derby’s Jaalum Jackson intercepted a pass to halt the Salthawks’ momentum. Tripp Holtzinger booted a 31-yard field goal for the early lead, and Clark extended it with a 5-yard run late in the first quarter. Clark then found Rowan Foster on a 52-yard deflected touchdown pass to push the margin to 17-0.

Hutchinson answered before halftime with a 2-yard scoring pass from Robert Hunter to Lamar Govain, trimming the deficit to 17-7. But Derby seized control with 26 unanswered points in the third quarter, highlighted by Amarion Houston’s 7-yard interception return and a 16-yard reverse touchdown by Castillo.

Castillo went on to haul in scoring passes of 23 and 29 yards from Clark, stretching Derby’s lead to 43-7. Tyler Pontious closed the scoring with an 18-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The game was marred by a brief sideline scuffle midway through the third quarter after Clark was hit late out of bounds. Four players — Two from Derby and two Hutchinson players — were ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Derby finished with 343 total yards, including 198 on the ground, while Hutchinson was held to six first downs and just 31 rushing yards.

The Panthers will travel to Valley Center on Oct. 10, while Hutchinson looks to regroup in AVCTL play by hosting Campus.

The Hutchinson Community College football team's 42-day road trip continues on Saturday with a second-straight trip to the state of Iowa.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (3-0) play their final non-conference contest against the Ellsworth Panthers (2-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cadet Field in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Daren Dunn (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Coming off their first of two bye weeks last Saturday, the Blue Dragons last played on September 28 and defeated No. 9 Iowa Central 35-17 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Before the Blue Dragons play again at Gowans Stadium in October 18, they have road games at Ellsworth and Dodge City before then. Again, the 42 days between home games is the longest stretch between home games in program history.

Defensively,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/wiley_darius_xg0z">Darius Wiley</a>&nbsp;(11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sacks) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/haines_teegan_n109">Teegan Haines</a>&nbsp;(15 tackles) led a Dragon defense that rolled up 16 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.

An improved Ellsworth team had a tough battle last week in Iowa Falls, losing to No. 8 Garden City 66-10. Two weeks ago, the Panthers defeated Highland 41-38. That was Ellsworth's first KJCCC/Iowa Alliance victory since September 14, 2019, a streak of 36 games.

Last season, the Blue Dragons tied an NJCAA scoring record, defeating Ellsworth 99-0 on September 28, 2024 at Gowans Stadium, Hutchinson's sixth-straight win in the series.

The Blue Dragons out-gained Ellsworth 583-100, including 460 yards on the ground led by eventual NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year, Waymond Jordan, Jr., who had 175 yards on nine carries and four touchdowns.

Entering play on Saturday, Salley is the nation's leader in touchdown receptions with seven and is third in yards per game and yards per reception at 108.7 and 21.7 yards, respectively. Johnson leads the nation in completion percentage at 71.0 percent.

Defensively, safety M.J. Graham leads the nation with four interceptions. Haines is second in the NJCAA in tackles per game (11.0).

Now 2-0 in the KJCCC/Iowa Scheduling Alliance this season, the Dragons are now 27-8 since the Alliance started in 2014.&nbsp;

⚾ Royals outfielder Mike Yastrzemski named 2025 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award recipient

HAVEN, Kan. — For the second straight season, Haven High School has opened 4-0. But unlike last year’s quick start that ended with a loss to Garden Plain, this year’s Wildcats are looking to rewrite the script, and perhaps make history.

Haven hasn’t started 5-0 since 1985, when it rattled off nine straight wins before falling to Larned in the Class 4A Bi-District round of the playoffs. On Friday, the Wildcats travel to Garden Plain (3-1) with first place in Class 2A District 5 on the line.

Co-head coaches Drew Thalmann and Thomas Cooprider are in their seventh season guiding the Wildcats, posting a 36-25 record while splitting duties, Thalmann handling the offense and Cooprider the defense. Both say this year’s group has embraced the challenge of replacing last year’s senior trio of Van Loop, Aiden Hoopes and Nash Wray, who combined for 41 of the team’s 51 touchdowns.

That production has been filled by a breakout sophomore and a steady junior presence. Running back Cole Brawner has emerged as one of the top backs in Class 2A, rushing for 635 yards and eight touchdowns on 96 carries through four games, averaging 158.8 yards per game. Quarterback Brogan Wray, Nash’s younger brother, has completed 65 percent of his passes (36 of 55) for 464 yards and six touchdowns. He has also added 157 rushing yards and four scores, giving him 10 total TDs this season.

“Cole’s done a nice job stepping in at tailback, he had over 200 yards last week against Douglass,” Thalmann said. “Brogan has been running our offense since middle school, so he’s comfortable. He’s different than Nash, but dangerous in his own way.”

The passing game has leaned on two juniors: Kolton Altvater, who leads the team with 13 receptions for 185 yards and four touchdowns, and Zade Turner, who has caught nine passes for 162 yards and two scores. Senior Jaxson Wilder adds balance with seven catches for 87 yards.

That group has produced 465 passing yards, 804 rushing yards and 470 receiving yards across four games, averaging more than 317 yards of total offense per game. Haven has scored at least 26 points in every outing, with wins over Hillsboro (26-12), Nickerson (44-7), Smoky Valley (38-6) and Douglass (31-20).

Much of that success starts up front. Seniors Aaron Logan and Jacob Myers, along with 6-foot-3, 285-pound junior Cody Holzrichter, a returning All-League selection, anchor an offensive line that has opened lanes and kept Wray protected.

“Somebody asked if our offensive line was the catalyst of our offense, and I think that’s true,” Thalmann said. “They’re making holes for Cole and keeping Brogan upright. They’ve been excellent.”

Defensively, Haven has been just as strong, allowing only 49 points all season. Senior linebacker Grant Patry, a returning All-State selection, made his season debut in Week 4 after knee surgery and recorded a sack on his second play back.

Patry joins Wilder, Marks and Brawner in a defense that has racked up 28 tackles for loss in four games. Brawner and sophomore John Williams share the team lead with 30 tackles apiece, while Wilder has 29. Senior lineman Brock Marks and Myers each have a sack, and freshman Alexander Hall added another.

Haven’s secondary has been especially opportunistic, recording eight interceptions through four games. Wray leads the team with three, while Brawner and Altvater each have two. Senior Chris Barrientos has one.

“Effort is unbelievable this year,” Cooprider said. “We’ve only had to run pursuit drill maybe twice all season. These guys fly around, hit people, and believe in what we’re doing.”

For Cooprider, the goal has been more than another hot start, it’s about sustaining success.

“We’ve had good seasons before, but we’ve never followed them with another good one,” he said. “We challenged this group to be the one that breaks that trend, and so far they’ve risen to it.”

Friday’s matchup with Garden Plain offers a chance to prove it. The Owls ended Haven’s 4-0 start last fall with a decisive win, and they’ve once again positioned themselves as a district contender.

“Garden Plain is always technically sound,” Thalmann said. “They’re physical, talented and disciplined. These games show us where we’re at. We’d like to get over the hump one of these days.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Garden Plain. A win would give Haven its first 5-0 start in four decades, and keep the Wildcats’ climb back to the top very much alive.

🏈 Haven seeks revenge on Garden Plain, first 5-0 start in 40 years

NICKERSON, Kan. — Nickerson High School celebrated a milestone Thursday with a ribbon-cutting for its renovated weight room, a project years in the making and one school leaders say represents a larger commitment to the success of student-athletes.

The space was gutted this summer after the Panthers’ strength program concluded its final workout. Old flooring and racks were removed and relocated to Reno Valley Middle School, giving younger athletes their own six-rack training facility. Panther Pride, the school’s booster club, repainted the room and helped give it what head football coach Parker Bruce called a “face lift.” New LED lighting, flooring and racks followed, transforming the space into a brighter and more functional facility.

“Anything worthwhile is going to take a long process,” Bruce said. “It’s been a little longer than what we wanted, but now seeing it in person, it’s totally worth it.”

Bruce said seeing the reactions from students when they walked into the weight room for the first time Thursday morning at the school assembly underscored the project’s importance.

“It’s just awesome to know, for them to know, and for us to know that they know that there is an investment into their success and to the process of success,” he said. “A lot of people think it’s just a football thing. It’s every athlete, every student in here that comes through our weight room will be able to use this facility and be able to use this equipment.”

Athletic director Devin Maxwell, a Nickerson graduate, said the project represents how far the school has come since his own high school days.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Maxwell said. “It’s been nice to see the change from when I was here in high school to what it is now, and just the investment everything. It’s nice to show the kids like, hey, we believe in you. We trust in you. Let’s get things changed and get things moving.”

Maxwell has reshaped the athletic department since taking over, hiring a mix of experienced leaders and young coaches to rebuild programs across the board. That includes bringing in Bruce for football, Trish Wade in volleyball, Terrence Williams in boys basketball and Kelly Cannon in softball.

“I truly believe in the school and the kids, and truly believe that we are better than what we have been in the past, and all it takes is just coaches and people to believe in the kids so they can believe in themselves,” Maxwell said.

Both Bruce and Maxwell said the updated facility is only the beginning. The project signals to students that they are supported and that the school’s culture is shifting toward higher standards.

“It’s fun to see the excitement,” Maxwell said. “I’m hoping that the excitement builds and continues to build, and they can get in there and they know, I mean, that we believe in them, and that they can just do big things.”

Maxwell added that more upgrades could be ahead as the school continues investing in its athletic infrastructure.

“Hopefully, I mean, we start to change the culture to a winning culture, and one that we can be proud of, back to how I truly believe we could be,” he said. “Hopefully some more investment into, there’s talks of renovating the concession stand and things like that.”

For Bruce, the weight room is more than racks and flooring. It’s a visible sign to athletes and the community that Nickerson is committed to restoring tradition and pride.

“This shows people want them to succeed and wanting them to get better,” he said. “It’s just all around great.”

‘A long time coming’: Nickerson celebrates new weight room

Sophomore Beatrice Salas scored her first career goal and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/puccinelli_isabela_fmo3">Isabela Puccinelli</a>&nbsp;returned to the lineup to dish out a pair of assists as the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 KJCCC victory over the Barton Cougars to complete the first half of conference play on Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

The Blue Dragons snapped a two-match winless streak to improve to 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 (10 points in the KJCCC. Hutchinson travels to play No. 6 Cowley on Saturday in Arkansas City. Barton is now 6-5-0 overall and 3-4-0 (nine points) in the league.

Battling through a tightly contested scoreless draw in the first half, but Blue Dragons scored first just 4 minutes into the second half.

Puccinelli fired a low shot from 18 yards out that Barton goalkeeper Leonie Chambe made a save on, but the rebound caromed off to her left right to Salas, who hammered the loose ball home for a 1-0 lead with 41 minutes to play in the second half. Missing half of her freshman season to injury in 2023, Salas scored her first career goal, which turned into her first game-winning goal.

With 24:54 remaining the second half, the Blue Dragons got a big insurance goal. Puccinelli feathered a pass through to the foot of&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/smith_poppy_opqw">Poppy Smith</a>, who drew the Barton keeper to her and then scored to the lower right corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Dragon defense was equal to the task in protecting the shutout.

Freshman goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/carvell_evie_w1nf">Evie Carvell</a>&nbsp;tied a season high with six saves. Her most important save came in the second half in the 62nd minute when Carvell's save of a point-blank shot of Ayaka Nagano preserved Hutchinson's 1-0 lead at the time.

Carvell is now 4-1-1 with her second shutout of the season.

Barton out-shot Hutchinson 15-12. Each team had three corner kicks.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/villanueva_alondra_w1k3">Alondra Villanueva</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/vazquez_lauren_ysnb">Lauren Vazquez</a>&nbsp;combined for 51 kills to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team in its Jayhawk Conference home matchup against Butler on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

But after capturing the first two sets, the Blue Dragons dropped the final three sets by a total of seven points in a 3-2 loss to the Grizzlies.

Hutchinson is now 11-12 overall and 3-5 in the Jayhawk. The Blue Dragons travel to play at No. 12 Barton at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Butler is now 13-8 overall and 4-4 in the KJCCC.

The Blue Dragons broke a single-match team record for kills with 75. Villanueva had a career-high 30 kills and Vazquez had a career-high 21 kills.

Villanueva is the second Blue Dragon in program history to reach 30 kills in a match. Katelyn Elstun had 34 kills against Missouri State-West Plains in 2019. Villanueva also tied for the second-most attacks in a match with 30, tying Hall of Famer Mariana Blum, who had 70 against Indian Hills in 2004.

Villanueva hit .314 for the match and posted her team-high 10th double-double of the season with 16 digs.

Vazquez had her fourth double-double of the season with 21 kills on 40 attacks for a .375 hitting percentage. She added 16 digs.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Butler .226-.220 and had 75 kills to Butler's 58. The Grizzlies out-blocked the Blue Dragons 11-7 and had 12 aces to Hutchinson's six. The Dragons out-dug Butler 86-57.

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/reupena_angela_5uex">Angela Reupena</a>&nbsp;had 37 assists, six digs, four kills and an ace.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons got off to a tremendous start hitting .419 for the set and sided out at a 77-percent clip. Five different players has at least three kills led by Vazquez's five kills and Villanueva's four. 🏐 Dragons fall in 5 sets to Grizzlies

The Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team matched its highest national ranking in program history on Wednesday coming in at No. 2 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division I rankings.

With two team victories on their resume this season, the Blue Dragons jumped two spots from No. 4 in the first regular-season poll two weeks ago.

The last time the Blue Dragon men were ranked No. 2 in the national rankings was on September 23, 2020. The Dragons have been ranked in 16 consecutive polls, which is second to their record 18-straight polls from 2018 to 2020.

Hutchinson has team wins in the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on August 30 and the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 20.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kogo_cornelius_a3hy">Cornelius Kogo</a>&nbsp;won the Masterson and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kiprotich_titus_yvcm">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;won the MSSU Stampede. The Dragons had five Top 10 finishers at the Masterson and three Top 10 placers at the Stampede.

👟 HutchCC men up to No. 2 in USTFCCCA rankings

The Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team dropped one spot to No. 11 in this week's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA Division I women's national rankings released on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons were No. 10 after the first regular-season rankings after starting the season ranked No. 15 in the preseason rankings.

Hutchinson finished second in the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in August, but did not post a team score in the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 20 in Joplin, Missouri.

The Blue Dragons are being led by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/roni_mildred_mud8">Mildred Rono</a>, who has two individual race wins this season.

Hutchinson next runs at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open on October 11 in Hays.

The Blue Dragons remain the highest-ranked Jayhawk Conference team this week. After the Dragons, Butler is No. 13, Garden City is No. 14, Dodge City is No. 18, Cloud County is No. 20 and Neosho County is No. 25.

The Big 12 Conference, along with host institution Kansas, announced today that the Jayhawks will square off with Arizona State in the first-ever&nbsp;Union Jack Classic&nbsp;at London's iconic Wembley Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026. The matchup will mark the first-ever college football game at Wembley Stadium, a historic venue that opened in 1923 and has hosted multiple Summer Olympics, a World Cup final, the legendary Live Aid concert, several NFL games and many more historic moments. It will now add college football to its vast list of events. The game will serve as a home matchup for the Jayhawks, who will still play six home games at the reimagined David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in 2026. With the east side of the stadium slated for construction following the 2025 season and throughout the 2026 season, Kansas will have reduced capacity for home games next season.

 The Union Jack Classic will be the third Big 12 football game in two seasons played in Europe, which began with Iowa State's and K-State's 2025 season opener in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland. 🏐 Halstead, McPherson, Moundridge among area teams in latest KVA rankings

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced this morning that infielder Vinnie Pasquantino and right-handed pitcher Stephen Kolek have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for September. The awards are determined by a local media vote.

Pasquantino started each of the Royals final 25 games of the season, slashing .290/.330/.520 (29-for-100) with 19 RBI, and 15 of his 29 hits went for extra bases (11 doubles, 4 home runs). His 15 extra-base hits last month were tied for 5th most in the Majors, behind only Shohei Ohtani (19), Jorge Polanco (17), Daylen Lile (16) and Jackson Merrill (16), and they tied for the 7th most by a Royal ever in the month of September. He recorded his 100th RBI of the season in the 3rd inning on Sept. 10 in Cleveland, becoming the 21st different player in Royals history to record a 100-RBI season with the club. Pasquantino hit his team-leading 32nd home run in the 1st inning last Thursday in Anaheim, which also marked his Major League-leading 32nd go-ahead RBI of the season. Thanks to his strong month of September, he finished the year with 33 doubles and 32 home runs, making him one of eight players in Royals history to record at least 30 doubles and 30 home runs in a season, something teammate Salvador Perez also did this season (35 doubles and 30 HR). Pasquantino is only the third Royals left-handed batter to turn the trick, following George Brett in 1985 (38 2B, 30 HR) and John Mayberry in 1975 (38 2B, 34 HR). This marks his fifth career monthly honor and second straight, after recording an American League-leading 29 RBI in August.

Kolek was unanimously named Royals Player of the Month in his first full month with the club, as he was acquired by Kansas City at the Trade Deadline and made his next 5 starts with Triple-A Omaha before being recalled on Aug. 29. He made 4 starts with the Royals in the month of September, during which he pitched to a 2.00 ERA (6 ER in 27.0 IP) and allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in all 4 outings. He limited opponents to a .165 batting average (16-for-97), which was the 3rd-best opponents’ average in the American League (min. 4 GS), behind only Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson (.140) and Seattle’s Bryan Woo (.143). Kolek’s 2.00 ERA ranked 5th in the AL (min. 4 GS), trailing Tanner Bibee (1.30), Joey Cantillo (1.55), Gavin Williams (1.88) and Max Fried (1.89). He pitched to a 1.91 ERA (7 ER in 33.0 IP) spanning 5 starts as a Royal following his acquisition, making him one of only four Royals to allow no more than 7 earned runs over at least 33.0 innings in their 1st 5 appearances with the club, a feat last done by Jason Vargas in 2014 (6 ER in 35.0 IP).

Henderson is among 11 additions to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, marking the first in-season addition of receivers since announcing its initial watch list on August 6.

Henderson, a native of Hartford, Alabama, is Kansas' leading wide receiver through five games, catching 23 passes for 435 yards and four touchdowns, including receiving touchdowns of 93, 75 and 62 yards. Henderson's 435 receiving yards are the second most in the Big 12 Conference and 10th most nationally this season.

Last week against Cincinnati, Henderson took the first offensive play for a 93-yard touchdown on a strike from quarterback Jalon Daniels. Later in the third quarter, Henderson broke free for a 75-yard touchdown, becoming the first player in FBS this season with receiving touchdowns of 75+ yards in the same game. Henderson finished with the fourth most receiving yards in school history, 214, on five catches and two touchdowns.

Henderson is currently one of four players in FBS this season with 200+ receiving yards and 2+ receiving touchdowns in a single game and is the only one to do so against a conference opponent.

The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff

The members of the watch list have all demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field.

Daniels is a four-time team captain for the Jayhawks, becoming the first four-time captain in program history. Daniels, a native of Lawndale, California, is now in his sixth season at Kansas and is the only Power 4 quarterback to start at least one game in all six seasons.

Daniels has gotten off to a hot start to the 2025 season, completing 85-of-127 passes for 1,262 yards and 16 touchdowns. Daniels' 16 passing touchdowns are the second most in all of college football this season. Last week against Cincinnati, Daniels threw for 445 yards and rushed for 55, totaling 500 yards of total offense, the most in a single game in the country this season.

Daniels is one of Kansas football's most productive quarterbacks in school history, ranking second in Kansas football history in career passing yards (8,013), career completions (621), and career passing touchdowns (61). Daniels has the 8th-most career passing yards amongst all FBS quarterbacks and is one of three Power 4 quarterbacks with 55+ passing touchdowns and at least 7,000 passing yards at one school.

As impressive as Daniels is on the field, he is as equally impressive off the field. Daniels was recently named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy – awarded the top college football player with the best combination of academics, leadership, and on-field performance. Prior to the 2025 season, Daniels was named to the Walter Camp Award Preseason Watch List and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Watch List entering the 2025 season. In 2022, Daniels was named an Academic All-American.

Daniels is also very involved in the community, serving as an offseason captain and leading teammates to participate in community service initiatives within the Lawrence community. Daniels has also started the "Mom2JD6" Foundation committed to supporting single mothers raising athletic children by providing financial aid, mentorship, sports training, and community resources.

Twenty semifinalists will be selected by a by a subset of the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Selection Committee and announced on Tues., October 14. Three finalists will then be named for the award on Monday, December 15. The winner will be announced at the award ceremony at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on April 16, 2026.

Last year, J.J. Weaver of Kentucky won the eighth annual award. The first seven Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year awards were presented to Shaquem Griffin of UCF in 2017, D'Cota Dixon of Wisconsin in 2018, Trey Smith of Tennessee in 2019, Sam Ehlinger of Texas in 2020, Joshua Paschal of Kentucky in 2021, Deslin Alexandre of Pittsburgh in 2022 and Mike Hollins of Virginia in 2023.

The award, presented by Albertsons and Tom Thumb, is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player's leadership, both on and off the field. Leadership is a term synonymous with Jason Witten, who, in addition to becoming one of the best tight ends in the history of the sport, served as one of football's most prominent role models during his 16-year pro career. In addition to winning the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2012, Witten also received the Bart Starr Award, Pro Football Weekly's Humanitarian of the Year Award, Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP and the Bob Lilly Award, among many others. All of those honors have recognized his work in the community, achievements on the field and dedication to his teammates and family.

Coming off a bye week, the Hutchinson Community College football team remains at No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I Football rankings, which were released on Tuesday this week.

The Blue Dragons (3-0) stay at the top of the rankings for the eighth-straight week. Hutchinson travels to Ellsworth (2-3) for an 11 a.m. kickoff at Cadet Field on Saturday at Iowa Falls, Iowa. The Dragons will open Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday, October 11 at Dodge City.

The top eight teams all remained the same this week with the Blue Dragons once again capturing all 12 first-place votes.

The Blue Dragons extend their program record for longest consecutive weeks in the national poll to 54 weeks. The Dragons have been ranked in the top three of the NJCAA Rankings for 48 consecutive polls and have been ranked No. 1 in 43 of the 73 polls released in the Drew Dallas era.

There was no movement to the top eight teams in the latest rankings. After the Blue Dragons, Iowa Western, Tyler, Mississippi Gulf Coast and Navarro remain teams 2 through 5.

With Coffeyville’s win over Butler on Saturday, the Red Ravens jump into the Top 10 and there are now three Jayhawk Conference teams in the Top 10 this season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – One day after being named to the Ray's 8 list, Kansas State sophomore Simon McClannan was chosen as the best of the group by being named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, the award's organization announced on Tuesday.

McClannan averaged 51.0 yards on his four attempts last week against UCF as three of his four punts went at least 45 yards, none were returned and all four resulted in the Knights beginning the next drive inside their own 20-yard line. His effort included a career-long 65-yard punt, which was the longest by a Wildcat in two seasons.

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, McClannan became the first Wildcat punter in the Big 12 era to average at least 50.0 yards per punt on at least four attempts in consecutive games as he produced a 50.8-yard average in the previous game at Arizona.

McClannan enters this week's game at Baylor ranking third in the Big 12 with a 45.1-yard average on 19 punts, which includes seven that have traveled at least 50 yards to tie for second in the Big 12.
