
Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College football team passed its first test as the No. 1-ranked team in the NJCAA last Saturday. Now the Blue Dragons face a similar opponent on Saturday.
The top-ranked Blue Dragons (6-0, 3-0 KJCCC) play host to the Independence Pirates (0-6, 0-5 KJCCC) in a Noon kickoff for Military and First Responders' Appreciation Day Gowans Stadiums.
The game will be broadcast on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Rob Dreher (color) calling the action beginning at 11:30 a.m. The game will be exclusively streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday's Jayhawk Conference matchup will be a battle of the top two offenses in the league this season.
The Blue Dragons have surpassed 50 points in a game in 4 of 6 outings this season. They lead the Jayhawk Conference in scoring at 52.2 points and 439.5 total yards per game.
Despite its poor record so far, the Pirates are second in the KJCCC scoring 32.5 points and racking up 401.5 total yards per game this season.
The Pirates have a multi-quarterback system and is producing yards and points. Ennio Yapoor is completing 53.5 percent of his passes for 1,167 yards with 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 373 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Pirates have surpassed 30 points three times and their season low is 15 points in a 21-15 loss last week at home to Butler.
The Blue Dragon defense saw its three-game, 14-quarter shutout streak come to an end last Saturday with a late first quarter touchdown by Highland. In fact, the Scotties stunned the Dragons for 20 points and 240 yards in the first half. The Dragons responded well with no points and just 73 total yards allowed in the second half.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons had five rushing touchdowns and two special teams touchdowns against Highland. Hutchinson leads the Jayhawk in scoring average at 52.2 points per game and total offense at 439.5 yards per game. The Blue Dragons have scored 88 percent of the time when reaching the red zone (29 of 33).
The overall series between Hutchinson and Independence goes all the way back to 1930. The Blue Dragons lead the series 61-24-5, winning the past five meetings with the Pirates.
The 61 wins against Independence are the most against any single opponent in program history, now playing in its 95th season.
