STERLING, Kan. — For the first time since the program’s 1982 state championship season, Sterling finds itself one win away from playing for a title. The unbeaten Black Bears, now 11-0, will host another 11-0 power on Friday night when Smith Center comes to Smisor Stadium for a 7 p.m. Class 1A state semifinal kickoff, renewing a matchup that has not been played since 2013.

Sterling reached the semifinals after surviving a wild 44-42 quarterfinal win over Trinity Catholic, a game unlike anything the Black Bears had seen all season. Trinity limited standout running back Zane Farney to 49 yards, hit Sterling for back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns to open the second half and nearly forced overtime with a late score inside the final minute. Sterling never trailed by more than eight, but needed every bit of its depth and poise to hold on.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” head coach Brent Schneider said. “They came with a great plan, took Zane out of the game better than anyone has, but our other guys stepped up. Logan had a great game, Wyatt had a great game, and nobody flinched after giving up two kick returns. A lot of teams would check out when that happens. Our kids did not.”

Quarterback Logan Isaac shouldered a big part of the load with 127 rushing yards, including a 54-yard touchdown immediately after Trinity’s first kick return. Wyatt Newberry added 123 yards and a 63-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Sterling even found points when offensive lineman Derek Krone recovered a fumble in the end zone. It was the type of game where Sterling had to lean on every phase of its offense, something Schneider said his team embraces.

“Zane is such a selfless player,” Schneider said. “He was not complaining. He carried out every fake knowing he was going to get tackled because that is the job. That is who our guys are. Everybody does what is needed to make the offense work.”

The win also kept Sterling at home for a fifth straight week, a benefit of earning the No. 1 seed and taking care of business throughout district play. Schneider said the atmosphere last week was the best he has seen in his time as a player or coach, and he expects the same Friday, even with the threat of winter weather.

“It is a great honor to still be home,” he said. “The crowd last week was unbelievable. The kids treat it like business as usual, but the community is fired up. And I do not think a little weather is going to keep anyone away.”

If Sterling wins, the title game in Hutchinson is only a short drive away. The Black Bears know it is close, but Schneider said they have been careful not to let that reality distract them.

“We know it is right there,” he said. “But you cannot look ahead. Not with who we are playing.”

Smith Center brings one of the state’s most physical rushing attacks and is coming off a 22-14 win over Moundridge in a game that was not decided until the final play. The Redmen put together 80- and 97-yard touchdown drives, leaned on their dual-threat quarterback and a bruising offensive front, and made a game-saving defensive stop in the end zone on the final snap.

“They are the most physical team we have played, and we have played some physical teams,” Schneider said. “They remind me of Conway Springs. They get a lot of bodies to the point of attack. They run their quarterback hard. They are really sound. We pride ourselves on being physical too, so I think we will be the most physical team they have played as well.”

Moundridge is the lone common opponent between the two teams. Sterling beat the Wildcats 27-15 in Week 2, while Smith Center outlasted them last week. Schneider said there is limited value in the comparison because of how early Sterling faced them, but noted his team’s schedule has prepared them for a matchup like this.

“We have played some really big, really physical fronts,” he said. “Ellinwood, South Sumner and Conway Springs all try to get a lot of bodies to the point of attack. Those games helped us. I think that matters now.”

Farney has put together an exceptional season, rushing for 1,982 yards on 171 carries and averaging 11.6 yards per attempt. He has scored 37 touchdowns and topped 100 rushing yards in 10 of 11 games. He's currently at 6,368 rushing yards over his four years, averaging 8.1 yards per carry and 85 rushing touchdowns. He has rushed for over 100 yards in 27 of his 40 total games as a Black Bear.

Newberry has added 1,017 rushing yards on 67 carries, averaging 15.2 yards per attempt. He has 14 touchdowns and six games with more than 100 yards.

For Schneider, the formula Friday night is simple. Run the ball inside, stop Smith Center from doing the same and avoid the mistakes that can swing a possession in a game where both teams are comfortable controlling the clock.

“Take care of the football, try to force a turnover and make every possession count,” he said. “They are going to eat the clock. We cannot waste opportunities.”

🏈 43 years in the making: Sterling hosts Smith Center in biggest game since '82

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — P.J. Haggerty scored 37 points, Nate Johnson added 14, and Kansas State turned a tight halftime lead into a runaway, beating Mississippi State 98–77 on Thursday night.

Haggerty shot 13 of 21 from the field, hit four 3-pointers and went 7 of 8 at the line, repeatedly beating closeouts off the bounce. Johnson knocked down two 3s and handed out four assists, while Abdi Bashir Jr. chipped in 12 with four makes from deep.

Kansas State (5–0) buried 14 threes and assisted on 22 of its 37 field goals. Leading 44–36 at the break, the Wildcats broke the game open with a 13–5 surge. Haggerty sliced to the rim for a layup, Johnson drilled a transition 3 and Haggerty followed with another from the left wing for a 52–41 cushion.

Mississippi State (2–2) briefly countered behind Jayden Epps, who hit back-to-back 3s to close the gap to 57–47, but David Castillo answered with a 3 of his own.

McGriff scored seven straight points in the final stretch, Castillo knocked down two free throws, and Bashir buried a corner 3 to push the lead past 20 with under three minutes left.

Josh Hubbard led the Bulldogs with 23 points, and Brandon Walker scored 18 off the bench, but MSU struggled from deep (7 of 25) and couldn’t keep pace with the Wildcats’ perimeter fire

🏀 Haggerty erupts for 37 as K-State blows past Mississippi State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft pick Josh Simmons said Wednesday that he had the support of the entire organization during a sudden four-game absence, though the standout left tackle declined to discuss what ultimately caused him to leave the team.

Simmons returned to the field Sunday and started in a 22-19 loss in Denver. It was his first game since Oct. 6.

“I just want to keep it in-house, all due respect,” Simmons said in his first public comments since his departure.

The Chiefs drafted the 22-year-old out of Ohio State with the 32nd overall pick in April, hopeful that he would be able to overcome a knee injury that cost him most of last season and to become the blind-side protector they had long sought for Patrick Mahomes.

Simmons not only rebounded quickly from the injury, he showed so much promise in camp that he earned the starting job early. And he was on the field for the first six weeks of the season, impressing both his coaches and teammates with his rapid development.

“I mean, he's a great football player, and he's gotten better every week that he's played,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “And he will continue to get better. I think just for him, it's just continue to stack days on days of just getting better, and pushing himself to be the best player that he can be. ... I think the sky's the limit. He's got to keep pushing to get even better.”

That should be a whole lot easier now that the 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive lineman is back with the team.

Simmons said he had access to gyms and a training area while he was away, dealing with what Chiefs coach Andy Reid would only describe as a “family matter.” Simmons also had his playbook and said he was able to watch his teammates play on television.

They are just 5-5 through the first 10 games and have a crucial game against AFC South-leading Indianapolis on Sunday.

“The team and I were very transparent, especially at the end,” said Simmons, adding that he will be with the Chiefs through the rest of the season, however long it may last. “I've got some teammates that were always checking on me. They obviously had games, but when you have teammates like that, I was itching to get back and fight for them.”

Simmons drew a tough task in his first game back. Not only is Denver pass rusher Nik Bonitto third in the NFL in sacks, the Broncos lead the league in total sacks by a wide margin; they ultimately dragged Mahomes down three times last Sunday.

“Going against that was a fair welcome back,” Simmons said, “but with the teammates I had throughout the week, they helped me.”

In other news Wednesday, left guard Kingsley Suamataia remained in the concussion protocol and did not practice, and wide receiver Xavier Worthy was on the field but did not appear to be participating after Reid said he had tweaked an ankle injury.

Running back Isiah Pacheco was back at practice with a brace on his right knee. He has missed the past two games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association this morning announced on MLB Network that&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;has been named the overall Heart &amp; Hustle Award winner for the second consecutive season.

Created by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association in 2005, the Heart &amp; Hustle Award is voted on by alumni and active Major League players and is presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game.

The MLBPAA formed 30 committees, comprised of alumni players with established relationships to each team. One player from each Major League team is chosen by the committees based on the passion, desire and work ethic demonstrated both on and off the field. As the season draws to a close, fans, all Alumni and active players vote to select the final winner from the 30 team winners.

Witt Jr. has been Kansas City’s nominee in each of his first four Major League seasons. Since the award was established in 2005, he’s the second player to win the award twice, joining Hall of Famer&nbsp;Craig Biggio, who was named the Heart &amp; Hustle winner in 2006 and 2007.

Witt Jr., 25, has led the Majors in hits in each of the last two seasons, becoming the first player to accomplish that feat (excluding 2020) since&nbsp;Whit Merrifield&nbsp;did so for the Royals from 2018-19. Witt Jr. also led the Majors with 47 doubles in 2025.

He slashed .295/.351/.501 (184-for-623) in 157 games with Kansas City in 2025 and recorded 23 home runs and 38 stolen bases, becoming the first player in Major League history with at least 20 HR and 30 steals in each of his first four big league seasons.

Witt Jr. has already been recognized this offseason with a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Platinum Glove Award, which recognizes the best defender in each league. He’s also been named a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award winner, a Silver Slugger Award winner and First Team All-MLB at shortstop, all for the second straight season. He’s also been named Royals&nbsp;Les Milgram&nbsp;Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson could not withstand a late Garden City surge on Thursday night, falling 84-76 in Jayhawk Conference play at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons led 54-46 with just over 11 minutes to play after a stretch that included a Kyrell Shaw layup, two free throws from Daleron Thomas and a Kordell Williams dunk in transition. Garden City answered with a decisive run, using second-chance points, free throws and timely perimeter shooting to flip the game. Zaire Lott sparked the Broncbusters with a layup and later a three from the left wing, while Jordon Nevill buried multiple perimeter shots as Garden City outscored Hutchinson 38-22 over the final 11 minutes.

Nevill finished with a game-high 26 points, going 8 of 17 from the field and 5 of 12 from three, and hit 5 of 7 free throws to help close the game. Lott added 15 points off the bench, while Garden City’s reserves combined for 44 points. Mangok Gach added five points and a team-high seven rebounds, and the Broncbusters turned 13 steals into transition opportunities, taking advantage of 20 Hutchinson turnovers.

Shaw paced Hutchinson with 21 points and seven rebounds, attacking the lane and going 6 of 8 at the foul line. Bobby Cannon added 20 points and eight rebounds, including a three in the final two minutes that trimmed the deficit to 79-73. Asher Boney chipped in 13 points on 3 of 4 shooting with two 3-pointers, and Williams posted six points and 10 rebounds. Point guard Lolo Rudolph finished with 10 points and 11 assists while getting to the line for a 6 of 7 night at the stripe.

Hutchinson shot 44.2 percent from the field and held a 45-39 rebounding advantage, but the Blue Dragons were 4 of 17 from three and 26 of 38 at the line. Garden City shot 39.2 percent, went 8 of 36 from long range and 14 of 19 at the stripe, but compensated with extra possessions and a 44-24 edge in bench scoring.

The Broncbusters led 38-34 at halftime after a back-and-forth first half that saw Hutchinson start strong behind Cannon inside and Shaw attacking the rim. A late Nevill three extended Garden City’s lead going into the break, and although the Blue Dragons opened the second half with a 15-5 burst to briefly take control, Garden City’s closing run decided the contest in the final minutes.

Leading 16-15 after a back-and-forth first quarter, Hutchinson took control with a 19-4 run in the second. The Blue Dragons held the Broncbusters to two field goals in the period and forced a string of turnovers that turned defense into offense. Katie Duncan’s three-point play started the surge, KaMyra Barber scored in transition, and Delora Pricop converted a three-point play of her own as Hutchinson built a 32-19 cushion. A late three by Whitney Brown sent the Blue Dragons to halftime with a 35-21 lead.

Hutchinson never trailed after Duncan’s go-ahead layup early in the second quarter. KANSAS CITY, Mo.—In conjunction with the Texas Rangers and Surprise Stadium, the Kansas City Royals today announced home game times for their 32-game exhibition schedule for 2026. Game dates and opponents were announced earlier this month. Game times are subject to change.

The Royals will begin their 24th season in the Cactus League on Friday, Feb. 20 as the road team vs. the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium beginning at 2:05 p.m. CT. Kansas City’s schedule features 15 home games at Surprise Stadium, plus 2 games as the visiting team vs. the Rangers on Feb. 20 and March 18.

Seven of the 1st 8 home games will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT. Starting on Sunday, March 8, when Daylight Saving Time begins, the Royals normal start time will be 3:05 p.m. CT. They will host 3 night games during Cactus League play, on Thursday, March 5 vs. the Texas Rangers (7:05 p.m. CT), Friday, March 13 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks (8:05 p.m. CT) and Tuesday, March 17 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers (8:05 p.m. CT).

There are two split-squad dates, on which the Royals will field a pair of teams and play 2 games, on Wednesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 19. Both home games on those dates will begin at 3:05 p.m. CT.

The Royals will play 32 games in 33 days next spring, including 29 Cactus League games. The other 3 games include an exhibition vs. Team Cuba on Tuesday, March 3 at Surprise Stadium (2:05 p.m. CT), plus 2 games vs. the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24, after the conclusion of Cactus League play.

The Blue Dragons have a tough challenge to open the 2025-26 conference season. After facing Garden City and its 113.5 point scoring average, the Blue Dragons travel to play Butler, the No. 3 scoring team in the nation at 108.8 points per game on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons' KJCCC fourth-ranked scoring defense will be put to the test. Hutchinson is allowing 67.7 points per game. The Dragons have yet to surrender 75 points or more in a single game this season.

Hutchinson had a full week to prepare for Garden City, last playing in a 79-55 win over Labette last Wednesday at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons held Labette to 21 points in the second half to break open a three-point halftime lead.

Through six games, the Blue Dragons are scoring 84.8 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the field, including 35.9 percent (2nd in the KJCCC) from 3-point range.

DeSalme and the Busters started the season 5-0 before being upset by North Platte Community College 91-77 last Wednesday in North Platte, Nebraska.

Before the North Platte game, Garden City had back-to-back games of 152 points against the Bethany College JV and 128 points against Otero.

Devonte Reed is the top Garden City scorer and fourth-leading scorer in the KJCCC at 20.7 points per game while shooting 53.7 percent from the field.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team is set to open the 2025-26 Jayhawk Conference season on Wednesday night.

The first game of the 24-game conference marathon comes against the unbeaten Garden City Broncbusters at 5:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live and exclusively on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The defending Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragons went 5-1 in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Dragons come off a pair of impressive victories over Murray State (86-68) and Otero (82-59) last weekend.

Entering conference play, the Blue Dragons are average 77.7 points per game. They are shooting 43.6 percent overall and are shooting 34.6 percent from 3-point range. Gouldsby's third return success put the Blue Dragons in plus yardage and helped No. 1 Hutchinson score early in a 49-7 victory over Highland last Saturday in Highland.

Gouldsby was named the KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday. He also won the award in back-to-back weeks in Week 7 and Week 8.

Gouldsby opened Saturday's game with a 56-yard kickoff return that set the Dragons up at the Highland 36. Four plays later, the Dragons scored.

Gouldsby also had a 30-yard punt return in the first quarter that led to a field goal. Gouldsby had 96 all-purpose yards against the Scotties.

This is the 12th time the Blue Dragons have had a player earn offensive, defensive or special teams awards this season.

Kudrna, 22, made a career-high 24 appearances (22 starts) between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha in 2025. He made 20 appearances (19 starts) with Northwest Arkansas and recorded a 4.21 ERA (44 ER in 94.0 IP) with 96 strikeouts (9.2 K/9). In his last 6 starts at Double-A, from July 4-Aug. 13, he recorded a 1.71 ERA (6 ER in 31.2 IP), including a career-high 11 strikeouts in 6.0 innings on July 22 at Arkansas. That stretch earned him Northwest Arkansas Pitcher of the Month honors for July and Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period of July 21-27.

Kudrna was a SiriusXM Futures Game selection in 2024 and was named the organization’s&nbsp;Paul Splittorff&nbsp;Pitcher of the Year in 2022. He was selected by Kansas City in the 2nd round of the 2021 Draft out of Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park, Kan.

⚾ Royals select two players to 40-man roster

The Wichita Open will leave the Korn Ferry Tour after this season and join PGA Tour Americas in 2026, ending a 35-year run as one of the Korn Ferry Tour’s original stops.

The tournament isn’t leaving Wichita. Crestview Country Club will continue hosting, with next year’s dates set for June 25–28. Fans can expect the same experience — including the popular 17th-hole atmosphere — and no changes to pricing.

The move comes as the Korn Ferry Tour reshuffles its schedule. Rather than losing its spot entirely, Wichita shifted circuits to maintain its June window and keep the event in place.

Fans can expect the same experience — including the popular 17th-hole atmosphere — and no changes to pricing.The move comes as the Korn Ferry Tour reshuffles its schedule. Rather than losing its spot entirely, Wichita shifted circuits to maintain its June window and keep the event in place.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — P.J. Haggerty scored 25 of his 29 points in the second half and Kansas State rallied from a five-point deficit in the final 49 seconds to beat Tulsa 84-83 on Monday night.

Myles Rigsby hit two foul shots to give Tulsa (3-1) its largest lead at 83-78 with 49 seconds to go. Haggerty hit two free throws and a jumper following a Tulsa turnover to cut it to 83-82 with 31 seconds left.

Khamari McGriff stole the ball from Miles Barnstable and fed Danny Castillo for a go-ahead layup 13 seconds later. Barnstable missed a 3-pointer and David Green missed a jumper in the final 7 seconds for the Golden Hurricane.

McGriff had nine points and Abdi Bashir Jr. scored eight to help the Wildcats (4-0) take a 39-34 lead at halftime. Nine different players had first-half points for Tulsa.

Haggerty made three foul shots and a layup in a 12-3 run and Kansas State led 68-60 with eight minutes left. Tylen Riley scored six in a 16-6 spurt and Tulsa moved in front 76-74 to set the stage for a wild finish.

Haggerty made 9 of 16 shots and 11 of 12 free throws, also grabbing 10 rebounds for K-State. McGriff totaled 13 points and nine rebounds. Castillo scored 12 off the bench and Bashir added 10 points.

The Hutchinson Community College football team remained No. 1 in the NJCAA rankings for the 13th-consecutive week with the new Division I Football poll released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons (9-0) will now play their fifth nationally ranked opponent this season when No. 14 Garden City comes to Gowans Stadium for a noon kickoff on Saturday.

The Dragons defeated Highland 49-7 on Saturday in Highland for their 13th-straight victory and 25-consecutive road win.

Hutchinson received all 12 first-place votes again with Iowa Western (9-1), Tyler (10-0), Northwest Mississippi (10-1) and Georgia Military (10-1) rounding out the top 5.

The Blue Dragons extend their program record for longest consecutive weeks in the national poll to 61 weeks. The Dragons have been ranked in the top three of the NJCAA Rankings for 55 consecutive polls and have been ranked No. 1 in 50 of the 80 polls released in the Drew Dallas era.

The KJCCC continues to have four teams in the Top 15. Coffeyville (7-3) remained No. 7. Butler (6-3) moved up three spots after a win over Dodge City to No. 10. Garden City (6-4) dropped three spots to No. 14 after an overtime loss to Iowa Central, which jumped up two spots to No. 8.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team moved up one spot in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings this week after a 2-0 week last week to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule.

The Blue Dragons are No. 18 this week and are one of four Jayhawk Conference teams in the newest Top 25 that was released on Monday.

Hutchinson earned victories over Murray State (86-68) and Otero (82-59) in the Hutch Women's "BreatheFire" Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sports Arena to close the non-conference schedule at 5-1.

Now starts the 24-game grind of the KJCCC double-round-robin schedule on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons will open with Garden City (5-0) at home at 5:30 p.m. and then will travel to No. 14 Butler (5-0) at 2 p.m. on Saturday in El Dorado.

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked in 33 consecutive polls and have been ranked in 192 of the last 214 polls.

For the first time since Hutchinson was ranked No. 1 last season, the KJCCC has the top-ranked team residing within the conference. With a loss by Northwest Florida State over the weekend, Dodge City (5-0) is the No. 1-ranked team for the first time in program history.

This week's Top 5 has Dodge City, Chipola, Three Rivers, Gulf Coast State and Northwest Florida State.

🏀 Dragons move up to No. 18 as KJCCC play begins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals announced their 2025 team award winners today, which were voted on by the Kansas City Chapter of the BBWAA.

Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was named the&nbsp;Les Milgram&nbsp;Player of the Year, an award named in honor of the late Kansas City businessman, community leader and Royals board member. Left hander&nbsp;Noah Cameron&nbsp;was named&nbsp;Bruce Rice&nbsp;Pitcher of the Year, named in honor of the late Kansas City-area sportscaster.

Maikel Garcia&nbsp;earned the&nbsp;Joe Burke&nbsp;Special Achievement Award, named in honor of the Royals Hall of Famer, who was the club’s General Manager and President during his 20 years with the Royals from 1973-92. The award is given to an unsung player who contributed beyond what was expected or someone voters felt deserved recognition for an outstanding season.

Witt Jr. has won Royals Player of the Year in each of his four seasons in the Majors, including unanimous selections in 2023 and 2024. He is the first to win Royals Player of the Year honors in four consecutive seasons. Since the award was established in 1971, Witt Jr.’s four Royals Player of the Year Awards are 2nd most, trailing only&nbsp;George Brett, who won the award a club-record eight times.

Witt Jr. slashed .295/.351/.501 (184-for-623) in 157 games with Kansas City in 2025 and recorded 23 home runs and 38 stolen bases, becoming the first player in Major League history with at least 20 HR and 30 steals in each of his first four big league seasons.

He led the Majors this season in hits for the second consecutive year, becoming the first player to accomplish that feat (excluding 2020) since&nbsp;Whit Merrifield&nbsp;did so for the Royals from 2018-19. Witt Jr. also led the Majors with 47 doubles in 2025.

Witt Jr. has already been recognized this offseason with a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Platinum Glove Award, a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award and was named First Team All-MLB at shortstop.

Cameron was named Royals Pitcher of the Year as a rookie, becoming the first pitcher to earn the honor in his first Major League season since&nbsp;Brad Keller&nbsp;in 2018. Cameron went 9-7 with a 2.99 ERA (46 ER in 138.1 IP) in 24 starts with Kansas City, the lowest mark among American League rookies in 2025 (min. 20 starts).
