INMAN, Kan. —
Halfway through the 2025 football season, the Inman Teutons have transformed from a rebuilding team into a district frontrunner. With a 4-1 record and an undefeated mark in Class 1A District 6, Inman has already matched its win total from a year ago and looks every bit like a postseason contender.

The Teutons’ only setback came in a 60-47 shootout loss to 1A No. 2 Sterling on Sept. 19, a game that showed both their explosiveness and their resilience. Since then, Inman has rolled through district play with convincing wins over Remington (54-0) and Marion (52-30), displaying a balance of speed, toughness, and improved execution across the board.

Head coach Lance Sawyer, now in his 10th season at the helm, said the team’s maturity has been evident from Week 1.

“Coming into the season, we knew we would be pretty good,” Sawyer said. “We have three seniors — Cooper Wiens, Dylan Larson, and Braeden Stutzman, who have played extremely well, but we’ve also got a lot of sophomores and juniors who are getting better every game. They’re starting to gel, and the leadership is coming on.”

Inman’s veteran experience and summer weight-room gains have translated into a punishing offense. The Teutons piled up 523 total yards in last week’s win at Marion, including 458 rushing yards on 56 carries, while converting 73 percent of their third-down attempts.

Junior quarterback Malachi Brunk has been a force behind center, rushing for 277 yards and three touchdowns against Marion and adding a 65-yard touchdown pass to Korbyn McClellan. Brunk’s ability to break tackles and extend plays has become the heartbeat of Inman’s attack. He has 699 rushing yards and nine scores to go along with his 645 yards through the air and seven touchdowns.

“Malachi knows the playbook inside and out,” Sawyer said. “He’s a tough runner and puts himself in the right spots. When you need three yards, you keep it in his hands.”

Behind a cohesive offensive line anchored by Wiens, Stutzman, and Larson, the Teutons have found success in both power and speed. McClellan added 74 yards and two touchdowns on the ground last week, while Kru Harris rushed for 48 yards and a score. Fullback Braxton Malloy contributed 59 yards on 11 carries, giving Inman four legitimate ballcarriers capable of striking from anywhere on the field.

“We’ve got four guys who can run the ball every play,” Sawyer said. “Last year, teams gunned for our outside speed. This year, we can hit inside, too. Our line is stronger, and the offense is more versatile.”

The Teutons’ defensive improvement has been just as vital to their rise. Senior defensive end Cooper Wiens continues to lead the charge up front, recording seven tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss against Marion while forcing a fumble. Wiens leads the defense with 43 total tackles, including 12 for loss and seven sacks. His presence has anchored a fast, aggressive front that has adapted well to a 3-4 scheme designed to maximize team speed.

“Cooper has been dominant,” Sawyer said. “He’s a physical beast. If he gets his hands on you, he’ll bring you down.”

Inman’s defense, led by Wiens, Malloy, McClellan, and Tyler Jerrick, has forced turnovers and limited big plays during district play, complementing an offense that can control tempo and wear opponents down.

The Teutons will look to continue their surge this Friday when they host Sedgwick, a team that has long been known for its passing attack but is adjusting under a new head coach. Sawyer expects another test.

“Sedgwick still has talent,” he said. “Their quarterback throws well and can run, and they’ve got some really good receivers. It’ll be a physical battle up front, and we’ll have to contain them.”

With remaining games against Bennington and rival Moundridge to close the regular season, Inman controls its path toward a district title and another postseason berth.

“Our goals are lofty,” Sawyer said. “We’re excited to see where this goes. The kids have worked hard in the weight room and on the field, and we’re ready to make a run.”

🏈 Inman Teutons rolling with momentum, confidence

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Legendary Kansas Volleyball coach Ray Bechard has been selected for induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame Class of 2025, honoring his distinguished four-decade career and extraordinary impact on the sport. The AVCA announced Wednesday morning.

Bechard, who retired following the 2024 season after 27 years leading the Jayhawks, will be formally honored at the USMC/AVCA Coaches Honors Banquet on Thursday, December 18, during the AVCA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Joining Bechard in the 2025 class is Jenny Hahn, Alan Knipe, and Tracy Rietzke.

"I am truly humbled with this honor, especially coming from the coaches' organization. The AVCA has been a great platform for all coaches in the sport," Bechard said. "Like any award, this is not about me but all the players, coaches, and staff that I have worked with throughout my career. I have been so blessed to have the support of my family, the University of Kansas and Barton County Community College throughout my career."

The winningest coach in Kansas Volleyball history, Bechard guided the Jayhawks to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Sweet Sixteens, a 2015 Final Four berth, and the 2016 Big 12 Championship, the program's first conference title. During his Kansas tenure, he compiled a career record of 496-313 (.613) and coached 12 AVCA All-Americans.

A five-time Big 12 Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2025) and three-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year, Bechard led Kansas to national prominence with six straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2012 to 2017, a span that included 45 consecutive weeks ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll. His 2015 squad reached the NCAA National Semifinals, while the 2016 team captured the Big 12 title with a 15-1 league record.

Bechard's teams also set new standards for fan engagement. Under his leadership, Kansas Volleyball established one of the most electric home atmospheres in the nation, selling out Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in back-to-back seasons, and annually finishing among national leaders in capacity percentage.

Before his arrival in Lawrence, Bechard built a national powerhouse at Barton County Community College, where he posted a 716-60 (.923) record across 13 seasons from 1985 to 1997. At Barton, he coached 23 Academic All-Americans, earned two AVCA National Junior College Coach of the Year awards (1990, 1993), and captured 12 AVCA District IV Coach of the Year honors. His success led to induction into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998.

Over 38 seasons as a head coach, Bechard amassed more than 1,100 career victories across both levels and was previously enshrined in the Barton County Community College Sports Hall of Fame and the Kansas Volleyball Association Hall of Fame.

Bechard also played a key leadership role nationally. An active member of the AVCA for decades, he served as the organization's president in 2010 and sat on its board of directors from 1992–2008, helping guide the association through significant growth in membership and programming.

A native of Grinnell, Kansas, Bechard earned both his bachelor's (1980) and master's (1982) degrees in physical education from Fort Hays State University. Before his collegiate coaching career, he began in high school athletics, leading Lewis High School to multiple conference titles in volleyball and basketball from 1980–83.

Bechard's influence on the Kansas program extended beyond the court. His players excelled academically and professionally, and his family's ties to KU athletics remain strong. His daughter, Ashley Bechard Henkelman, played for Kansas Volleyball from 2001–04, and his son, Brennan Bechard, now serves as Director of Basketball Scouting for Kansas Men's Basketball.

Bechard's induction into the AVCA Hall of Fame marks his fourth career Hall of Fame honor, capping a career defined by competitive excellence, program-building success, and lifelong dedication to the sport of volleyball.

The AVCA Hall of Fame Class of 2025 will be recognized on December 18 during the USMC/AVCA Coaches Honors Banquet, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship at the Kansas City Convention Center.

WSU announces new coaches show podcast

CHENEY, Kan. — Rain shortened the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division III and IV girls golf meet to nine holes Tuesday at Cherry Oaks Golf Course, where McPherson captured the team title with a score of 164, edging Wellington by two strokes.

Buhler finished third at 170, just six shots off the pace, led by Paityn Weber’s 3-over 39, good for fourth place individually. Teammates Anika Paulsrud, Macy Miller, and Harlie Terrell each turned in solid rounds between 42 and 47 to keep the Crusaders near the top of the standings.

McPherson’s depth carried the Bullpups to victory behind a balanced effort from Brodie Kuhn, who carded an even-par 36 to place second overall, and Andi Buschbom, who shot 38 to finish third. Lleyton Kuhn added a 41 for McPherson, which posted four scores at 41 or better.

Winfield’s Lilli Sympson claimed medalist honors with a 1-under-par 35.

Wellington (166) finished second, followed by Augusta (182), Winfield (188), Wichita Collegiate (206), Andale (207), Rose Hill (213), Circle (223), and Mulvane (230).

The Swathers finished with a team total of 382, led by Maci Kramer, who earned medalist honors with a 14-over-par 86. Teammate Wendy Roth was close behind with an 88 to finish runner-up, while Elizabeth Hosford added a 100 to place fifth overall.

Pratt took second in the team standings with a 433, paced by Hayden Riffey’s 99 for fourth place and Ava Simmons’ 102 for seventh. Iliana Craft and Lexi Simmons rounded out the Greenbacks’ scoring with rounds of 115 and 117.

Nickerson finished fifth at 518, led by Aubree Nikkel’s 120 and Jillian Hartman’s 123. The Panthers also counted scores from Brooke Michels (137) and Rylee Gilbert (138) to complete their team total.

Larned placed third at 442, and Hoisington was fourth at 516.

⛳ McPherson, Hesston capture league girls golf titles

NEWTON – Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/northgraves_jack_xzbb">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to lead the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team in the final round of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational at Sand Creek Station.

The Blue Dragons shot a final-round 293 on Tuesday and tied with Southern Indiana University for 12th-place at 882.

Hutchinson counted scores on Tuesday from Northgraves,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hatzenbuehler_grant_e33p">Grant Hatzenbuehler</a>&nbsp;(72),&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/scullion_corey_2mll">Corey Scullion</a>&nbsp;(75) and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hewlett_mark_9cke">Mark Hewlett</a>&nbsp;(75).

The Dragons had team rounds of 299, 290 and 293.

Hatzenbuehler was the only Blue Dragon to finish in the individual Top 20 at the Shocker Invitational. The tied for 19th at 217 after his 72 on Tuesday. That was Hatzenbuehler's ninth round of par or lower this season.

Scullion tied for 38th at 221 after his second-straight round of 75.

(AP) — Trevor Lawrence tripped and fell to the ground, stumbled trying to get up, finally got back on his feet and then&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1975398203173577216">scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;with 23 seconds remaining — turning a comical miscue into an improbable score — and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Kansas City 31-28 on Monday night.

“What a crazy, crazy finish,” said Lawrence, who was serenaded by teammates in the locker room to celebrate his 26th birthday.

The chaos ended with the Jaguars (4-1) snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs (2-3) and matching their win total from last season.

Patrick Mahomes, who drove the Chiefs into position to take a 28-24 lead with 1:45 to play, had a final chance with 16 seconds remaining. But he failed to muster much of a threat, and his final throw was incomplete, setting off a raucous celebration for the home team.

“We like to make things very interesting,” Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. “But the resiliency is really what I think this team has."

Lawrence ran for two touchdowns on the night and also threw for a score, helping balance a performance that included two turnovers.

He was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars. Lawrence dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain. Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence's trip and score.

Right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on Lawrence's right foot as he took the snap, and the quarterback fell several yards into the backfield. His first thought was “throw it away.” But when he got to his feet, he saw a lane and took it. He broke a tackle and somehow found the end zone.

“It's a goofy finish, but what a tough moment for him,” Coen said. “He wasn't going to lose.”

It helped that several defenders, including Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, stopped on the play.

“We’ve got to finish that play," Jones said. "It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles. I put it on us as a defense. We’ve got to finish. We’ve got to bring him down right there.”

Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards. He also ran for a team-high 54 yards.

Mahomes accounted for two touchdowns, and Kareem Hunt ran for two more scores for Kansas City, which had won 23 straight when leading by at least 14 points. The Chiefs took an early 14-0 lead, thanks in part to a fumble by Lawrence at the goal line.

Jacksonville's comeback got a huge boost from linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC defensive player of the month for September. Lloyd&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1975383731272548625">returned an interception 99 yards</a>&nbsp;for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was the longest interception return in the regular season by a linebacker in NFL history.

Lloyd stepped in front of Mahomes' pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line and took off the other way for his league-leading fifth takeaway.

He juked Mahomes and Hunt, then got up to full speed along the Jaguars’ sideline. He picked up a block from Josh Hines-Allen and then held the ball tight as Tyquan Thornton tried to knock it loose at the 5-yard line.

“It's a big win," Lawrence said. "Obviously it's a good team. They've been a good team for a long time. They're hard to beat, they really are. ... At the end of the game, they're always in it and they always seem to make the plays.

“So it was cool for us to go take it and have to win it at the end, put together a good drive. And showing up a big stage does say something.”

The Blue Dragons shot a 2-over 290 on Monday and are tied for 12th after 36 holes at 589. The Blue Dragons are tied with Indian Hills, which shot 292 on Monday.

The third and final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

Hatzenbuehler shot a 1-under 71 on Monday to lead the Blue Dragons. He eagled the 525-yard par-5 16th hole on Monday for his second eagle of the tournament and fourth of the fall season. Hatzenbuehler had one bogey and 16 pars for his third sub-par round of the season. Hatzenbuehler is tied for 21st after 36 holes.

Hewlett improved five strokes from Sunday's opening round with an even-par 72. Hewlett finished at even par with a birdie on his final home. Hewlett is tied for 53rd after 36 holes.

Northgraves is tied for 68th at 151 after a second-round 74. Gibb made a six-stroke improvement from the first round with a 73. He is tied for 74th at 152.

The Top 5 has Hutchinson, with all 12 first-place votes, Iowa Western, Tyler, Mississippi Gulf Coast and Navarro.

Scullion led the Blue Dragons to a 299 team score (11 over par) on Sunday. The Blue Dragons are in ninth place after 18 holes of the 17-team tournament. Hutchinson trails team leader Kansas City by 12 strokes.

Kansas City shot a 1-under 287 on Sunday to lead South Dakota State by one stroke. St. Thomas University is third at 289 and Wichita State is fourth at 292.

Midland College is the top NJCAA team in the field after the opening round. The Chaparrals shot 296. Indian Hills and Odessa are tied for seventh at 297 and then the Dragons at 299. Garden City is 15th after a 304 on Sunday. Dodge City is 16th at 305.

Scullion had a very steady round in the first round. Starting on hole No. 10, Scullion was even at the turn with a birdie on No. 11 and bogey on No. 17. Scullion had a birdie on No. 7 to play his back nine in one-under 35.

Scullion is six shots off the pace of Kansas City golfer Harry Bent, who shot 65 on Sunday.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hatzenbuehler_grant_e33p">Grant Hatzenbuehler</a>&nbsp;is tied for 28th at 2-over 74. ARKANSAS CITY – After a wild first half and a scoreless second half, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 KJCCC draw on the road at No. 6 Cowley College on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 (11 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons have a busy week ahead with a home battle Wednesday against Coffeyville, the resumption of their suspended game against Dodge City on Friday and then a road trip to Dodge City next Sunday. First-place Cowley is now 6-0-3 overall and 6-0-2 (20 points) in the conference.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/pokrandt_anastasia_o9md">Anastasia Pokrandt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/puccinelli_isabela_fmo3">Isabela Puccinelli</a>&nbsp;scored goals for the Blue Dragons on Saturday. Isabella Van Fleet had the only assist. Goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/carvell_evie_w1nf">Evie Carvell</a>&nbsp;(4-2-2) had five saves in the game.

Sara Arsee and Sara Cortez were the Cowley goal scorers. Tiger goalkeeper Julia Suelly had two saves.

The Blue Dragons were out-shot 16-8 by the Tigers, who had seven corner kicks to none for the Blue Dragons.

Every time Cowley scored in the first half the Blue Dragons produced an answer.

The Tigers scored first just 7:51 into the match when Cortez scored. The Dragons knotted the game in the 25th minute when Pokrandt hammered a high-arching free kick from about 48 yards out toward goal. The ball bounced about 5 feet in front of the goal and bounced over Suelly to tie the game at 1-1 with 20:46 to play in the half. The goal was Pokrandt's first of the season and third-career marker.

A little more than 2 1/2 minutes later, Arsee scored unassisted to give Cowley a 2-1 lead.

Then when less than a minute to play in the first half. Van Fleet played a through-ball up the middle that Puccinelli got two and split three Cowley defenders. Going in one-on-one with the Cowley keeper, Puccinelli outmaneuvered her and scored into an open net with 24 seconds remaining in the half to tie the game at 2-2.

Going against a strong south wind in the second half, the Dragons weren't able to produce much offense, getting out-shot 10-2 in the final 45 minutes. The Dragons didn't get a shot on goal in the second half.

Carvell had to make four saves in the second half to help preserve Hutchinson's second draw of the season.

The Blue Dragons are now 14-7-4 all-time against Cowley, going winless (0-4-3) in their last seven matches against the Tigers.

⚽️ Dragons draw even with No. 6 Tigers

GREAT BEND – Minus two starters because of injuries, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball pushed the No. 12-ranked Barton Cougars to the brink on Saturday night at the newly renovated Barton Gym.

Playing their second Jayhawk Conference five-set match of the week, the Blue Dragons fell 18-25, 25-21, 27-29, 26-24, 15-8 as Barton completed the regular-season sweep of Hutchinson. The Dragons are now 11-13 overall and 3-6 in the KJCCC. Barton improved to 20-5 overall and 7-1 in the league. The Blue Dragons play host to Cloud County on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/villanueva_alondra_w1k3">Alondra Villanueva</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with her 11th double-double of the season, going for 18 kills on 63 attacks and a career-best 28 digs.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/mcneil_jaylynn_8662">Jaylynn McNeill</a>&nbsp;hit a conference-high .290 on 31 attacks, finishing with 13 kills.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/follmer_kierny_j8x3">Kierny Follmer</a>&nbsp;posted a career-high 12 kills on 29 swings for a .379 hitting percentage.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .229-.175. Barton had 74 kills to Hutchinson's 59. Barton out-blocked the Dragons 10-9 and out-aced Hutchinson 7-1.

Freshman setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/garcia_alexandra_ev7s">Alexandra Garcia</a>&nbsp;finished with a season-high 48 assists and posted her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. She also had three blocks.

Follmer and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/galliher_mattie_fggb">Mattie Galliher</a>&nbsp;tied with six block assists each to lead the Dragons in that category.

Stasa Stamenkovic had a match-high 27 kills on 65 attacks to led Barton. Carolini Cristiny had 17 kills and Aubrey Olander had 11 kills and six blocks for the Cougars.

After dropping the first set, Villanueva led a second-set charge by the Blue Dragons with six kills and .333 hitting. The Dragons had a pair of blocks late in the set, including a stuff by Galliher on set point to win 25-21.

The Dragons led 22-21 in the third set, but faced and fought off two set points against. Barton outlasted the Dragons 29-27 in the third to take a 2-1 match lead.

Hutchinson raced out to an 8-0 lead to start the fourth set. The lead was 19-14 after a Galliher/Garcia double block and Villanueva kill. Barton went on a 5-1 run to pull within 20-19, but Follmer played a tip deep that landed on the back line for a kill and a 26-24 set win by Hutchinson to knot the match.

Barton led 8-7 at the fifth-set crossover and closed out the Dragons with a match-clinching 7-1 run.

The Dragons are now 2-4 in five-set matches this season.
