
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Top-ranked Hutchinson Community College continued its dominant start to the season Saturday, scoring 34 points in the second quarter and cruising to a 72-0 victory over Independence at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons (7-0, 4-0 KJCCC) recorded their fourth shutout of the season, with all four coming in their last five games. Hutchinson remained unbeaten while handing Independence (0-7, 0-6) its seventh consecutive loss.
Hutchinson quarterback Randy Phillips threw four touchdown passes, completing 13 of 23 attempts for 179 yards. Backup quarterback Jace Jefferson added 61 yards and a touchdown on 4-of-7 passing as the Blue Dragons finished with 418 yards of total offense.
The Blue Dragons wasted little time taking control, scoring on their first possession. After forcing a three-and-out, Hutchinson needed just two plays to cover 35 yards, with Jayden Hall scoring on a 14-yard run less than two minutes into the game.
Parker Grizzell added a 42-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give Hutchinson a 10-0 lead.
Hutchinson broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring five touchdowns to build a commanding 44-0 halftime advantage.
Phillips opened the second-quarter scoring with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Bravin Powell before Rayvelle Leak broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run.
Hall added his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon from 1 yard out after a fumble recovery by Jack Sells gave Hutchinson possession at the Independence 1-yard line.
Phillips followed with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Shaw III and connected with DyVair McCray for a 6-yard score with 52 seconds remaining in the half.
The Blue Dragons continued to pour it on after halftime.
Phillips connected with Hall for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter before Jefferson found Gerald Campbell for a 38-yard score, extending Hutchinson's lead to 58-0.
Hutchinson's defense joined the scoring in the fourth quarter when Kelby Tyre intercepted Independence quarterback Ennio Yapoor and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown.
Ryan Campbell capped the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run with 3:14 remaining.
Hall finished with 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries while adding a 25-yard touchdown reception. Campbell led the Blue Dragons on the ground with 68 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Aiden Bruce led Hutchinson's receivers with two catches for 60 yards, while Shaw, Campbell, Hall, Powell and McCray each caught touchdown passes.
Defensively, Hutchinson held Independence to just 159 yards of total offense, including 49 rushing yards on 37 attempts. The Blue Dragons registered 17 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions while limiting the Pirates to 1-of-13 on third-down conversions.
Dylan Gill led Hutchinson with six tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception he returned 29 yards. Makai Simpson, LaDarius Jemes and Donavin Garfield each finished with five tackles.
Tyre added four tackles to go along with his 49-yard interception return for a touchdown. Ira Warren recorded four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
The Pirates had opportunities to avoid the shutout, but Oscar Salgado missed field-goal attempts from 54 and 29 yards, including a 29-yard attempt with three seconds remaining.
Hutchinson also controlled the turnover battle, forcing three turnovers while committing just one. The Blue Dragons converted two of those takeaways into offensive touchdowns and returned another for a defensive score.
Grizzell finished with 12 points, connecting on a 42-yard field goal and nine of 10 extra-point attempts.
The victory marked Hutchinson's fourth shutout in five games, with the Blue Dragons previously blanking Garden City, Butler and Iowa Western.
