Perez was nominated by the Royals for his extraordinary efforts to build healthy and active communities in his native Valencia, Venezuela, his baseball home of Kansas City, Mo. and beyond.

Perez, the first member of the Royals to receive the honor, will be formally presented with the Roberto Clemente Award during a pregame press conference at Yankee Stadium before tonight’s Game Three of the World Series presented by Capital One.

Perez, the fourth captain in Royals history, a nine-time All-Star, five-time&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award winner and World Series MVP, has made meaningful humanitarian contributions, creating opportunities and better outcomes for the less fortunate in the following ways:

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award.” It was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 to honor the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Perez was selected from a list of 30 Club nominees by a distinguished panel that included Commissioner Manfred, Roberto Clemente’s children,&nbsp;Enrique, Luis&nbsp;and&nbsp;Roberto Jr., former players (including former Roberto Clemente Award winners), and journalists from MLB-affiliated network and media partners (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN, TBS and MLB.com). During the COVID-19 shutdown, Colombia set strict travel guidelines. Determined, Perez crossed the border on foot, at significant personal risk, to be there for the families who counted on him.</li><li>In the U.S., Perez has partnered with organizations fighting against ALS, most notably Sarah’s Soldiers, raising money and awareness to find a cure. Ohtani planned to take some swings at Yankee Stadium during the Dodgers' workout on Sunday night. Roberts said pain tolerance was the key factor. Roberts says: "I just don't see him not playing Game 3" and adds "if he feels good enough to go, then I see no reason why he wouldn't be in there." Ohtani did not travel with the team to New York in order to undergo imaging. He was on a separate flight.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team closed out its 2024 home season in style for the Blue Dragons’ four sophomores on Saturday night.

The Blue Dragons hit .294 and help the Pratt Beavers to .000 hitting in a dominant 25-14, 25-10, 25-14 KJCCC victory in the final home match for sophomores Shelbi Wilson, McKenzie Murphy, Precious Johnson and Ryleigh Stuhlsatz.

The Blue Dragons are 19-18 overall and 7-7 in the KJCCC with two road games remaining at No. 8 Barton on Wednesday and No. 7 Colby next Saturday.

The Blue Dragons were led by redshirt freshman Tiana Simmons, who had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Simmons hit .347 on 23 attacks and she added three block assists.

Freshman Atlyn Proctor tied for match-high honors with 10 kills on .333 hitting. Proctor had two block assists.

Sophomore Precious Johnson had six kills and freshman Kierny Follmer had four kills.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson finished with 28 assists and five digs.

The Blue Dragons had 11 team blocks, led by sophomore McKenzie Murphy with a career-high 10 total blocks.

The Dragons also had nine service aces led by Ellie Suber’s five aces and two aces each from Johnson and Beatriz Carvalho.

Freshman libero Addy Foster finished with 16 digs.

Set 1: The Dragons got off to a slow start falling behind 7-2 in the opening set, which prompted an early timeout. Hutchison got the offense rolling by countering Pratt’s start with a 10-1 run. The Dragons took an 8-7 lead on a Simmons kill. Murphy’s kill on a slide attack capped that initial surge for a 12-8 lead. A 5-0 run with two Carvalho aces upped the lead to 17-9. Simmons closed a four-kill, one-block performance in the first with a kill on set point for a 25-14 win.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons dominated the second set, opening with a 10-2 run on a Pricilla Raschen kill. Back-to-back double blocks from Simmons and Murphy and Follmer and Murphy gave the Dragons a 13-3 lead. Leading 19-10, the Dragons close out the set on a 6-0 Wilson service run. She had an ace while Johnson had a kill and block. The Dragons had four blocks in the second set.

Set 3: Pratt scored the first four points of the third set, followed by a Blue Dragon 4-0 run and another 4-0 Pratt run to five the Beavers an 8-4 lead. After that, the Dragons scored on 21 of the next 27 rallies to finish off the match. Tied at 11-11, the Dragons went on a 13-0 run on Suber’s serve. Suber had three aces in that run. Leading 24-14, freshman Angela Reupena’s sixth kill of the season came on match point.

🏐 Dragons sweep Pratt on Sophomore night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team knew it needed a single point on Saturday to lock itself into a third-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference.

Led by Haley Rogers’ four-point game, the No. 16-ranked Blue Dragons got that point with a 3-3 tie against the No. 19-ranked Cowley Tigers on Sophomore Day at the Salthawk Complex.

The Blue Dragons finished the 2024 regular season with a 9-2-6 overall record and finished third in the KJCCC with 30 points (8-2-4). The Dragons finished one point ahead of Cowley for third. Hutchinson will now play host to a Region 6 Tournament at 2 p.m. next Sunday, November 3 at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Official pairings will be released on Monday.

Hutchinson went 5-0-3 through the second half of the KJCCC season. The last loss the Dragons suffered was 3-0 at Cowley on September 25.

Rogers had a goal and two assists to lead the Blue Dragons offensively.

Tied at 2-2 at halftime, Rogers delivered a perfect corner kick that sophomore Kaitlyn Edwards headed into the upper right corner of the goal for a 3-2 Blue Dragon lead with 36:41 to play in the second half. The Blue Dragons were less than 2 minutes from a victory, but Cowley’s Hina Suzuki, the KJCCC’s second-leading goal scorer – scored her second goal of the game to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:23 to play in regulation time.

Sophomore Katharina Marx also scored for the Blue Dragons, while Nancy Stefanek scored an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower had her fourth career game of 10 or more saves with 10 saves against the Tigers. She now has 162 career saves, which is second-most in team history.

Suzuki had two goals and an assists to lead the Tigers, who out-shot the Blue Dragons 24-14. Tiger goalkeeper Marin Peoples finished with four assists.

The Blue Dragons scored the first goal of the game when Rogers took a throw-in from Stefanek and lobbed a shot over the top of Peoples for a 1-0 Hutchison lead 10:42 into the game.

A little less than 3 minutes later, Marx and Rogers weaved their way through the Cowley defense and ended up with a 2-on-1 vs. Peoples. Rogers slid a perfect pass to her right and Marx smashed it into the goal for a 2-0 lead with 31:38 remaining in the first half.

Cowley didn’t take long to tie the game. Suzuki scored her first goal of the game in the 17th minute to cut the Dragon lead to 2-1. Anna Linzler scored 2 minutes, 46 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2 with 25:39 to play in the opening half.

The Blue Dragons are now 14-6-2 against Cowley.

GAME NOTES – Katharina Marx now has 22 career goals, 21 career assists and 65 career points. She is tied with Nicole Randall (2009-10) for 17th on the Blue Dragon career points list. She is tied for 17th with Kayla Delzer (2006-07) and Esther Karhayu (2019-2020/21) in career goals scored and is tied for 13th in career assists with Madison Joyce (2010-11), Johanna Adolfs (2006-07) and Marah Franke (2019/2020/21).

The six ties extend the current Blue Dragon single-season record for ties. 

Haley Rogers had 13 goals, nine assists and 35 points this season.

Kaitlyn Edwards has nine goals, four assists and 22 points this season.

⚽ Dragons tie Cowley to secure third place in KJCCC

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State nearly hit the century mark in a wire-to-wire exhibition win over Emporia State Sunday night, 99-53.The 99 points are the most a Wichita State team has scored in an exhibition since 2017 when they scored 113. Wichita State upped its exhibition win streak to 30 in a row.

Five Shockers reached double figures, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/corey-washington/9068">Corey Washington</a>&nbsp;with 15. He missed just one shot from the field, going 6-for-7.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/9056">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/9059">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;both added 12 points, while Ballard tallied eight rebounds – five offensive.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/9058">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/ronnie-degray-iii/9061">Ronnie DeGray III</a>&nbsp;chipped in 11 points apiece.

In all, 13 Shockers saw action with 12 of them finding the scoring column. Only one Shocker registered more than 20 minutes on the night.

The Shockers shot 52 percent from the field and 10-of-25 from three-point range. Wichita State had just five turnovers on the night and dominated the boards, 49-31. Twenty-five of Wichita State's points came off 13 ESU turnovers.

Wichita State raced out to a 12-2 lead after Washington and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bijan-cortes/9060">Bijan Cortes</a>&nbsp;combined for 10 of the first 12 points. Eight straight points from ESU cut it to a two-point game, but the Hornets would come no closer.

Wichita State led by as many as 49 points in the second half, emptying the bench around the 10:00-minute mark.

The loudest applause of the night belonged to walk-on&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/henry-thengvall/9063">Henry Thengvall</a>&nbsp;who knocked down a pair of three-pointers, totaling eight points on the same night of his grandfather's 80th birthday.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes passed for 262 yards and two touchdowns and the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs remained undefeated with a 27-20 victory over the reeling Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

The Chiefs (7-0) extended their winning streak to 13 games, including the playoffs. Their last loss was at home to Las Vegas, but the Chiefs are 5-0 against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium and 6-0 there including the Super Bowl in February.

Las Vegas (2-6) has lost four consecutive games, but this was the first time the Raiders had scored at least 20 points since a 20-16 victory over Cleveland on Sept. 29.

Mahomes became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 30,000 yards, doing it in his 103rd game. Matthew Stafford had hit that mark at 109 games.

Mahomes' top target was Travis Kelce, who had 10 catches for 90 yards, both season highs. He last caught double-digit passes on Oct. 22, 2023, and this was the highest-yardage output since Nov. 26.

Kelce also had a touchdown catch, his 75th to pass Jason Witten for fifth on the NFL tight end list. Kelce moved within two of breaking Tony Gonzalez's team record.

Gardner Minshew completed 24 of 30 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns for Las Vegas, but was sacked five times. Jakobi Meyers, who missed the two previous games because of an ankle injury, caught six passes for 52 yards and the TD.

Minshew had the burden of carrying an offense that had virtually no running game, finishing with 33 yards, averaging 1.6 per carry.

The Raiders, however, made the champs work for this victory. But Las Vegas failed to take advantage of key opportunities

The Raiders had the ball and 1:57 left on the clock at the end of the first half, but went with two running plays before an incomplete pass on third down. Kansas City got the ball back and went 56 yards on nine plays for Harrison Butker's 42-yard field goal with four seconds left that made it 17-10.

Las Vegas trailed 17-13 in the third quarter when safety Tre'von Moehrig intercepted Mahomes' pass to give the Raiders the ball at the Chiefs 3. Running plays by Alexander Mattison resulted in plays of 2 yards, a no gain and a loss of 2 before Minshew was sacked on fourth down.

The Chiefs then went 87 yards on 19 carries, taking 9:43 off the clock, to set up another field goal from Butker, this one from 24 yards early in the fourth quarter for a seven-point lead.

A strip sack of Minshew set up the final Chiefs' touchdown with 4:59 left to all but seal the victory, though the Raiders scored a TD just before the 2-minute warning to create some drama. Kansas City then recovered the onside kick.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Several area teams were successful at regional cross country on Saturday.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, Chris Tennant kicked a 51-yard go-ahead field goal with 1:42 to go and No. 16 Kansas State stopped Kansas on fourth down to preserve a 29-27 victory Saturday night.

D.J. Giddens added 102 yards rushing for the Wildcats (7-1, 4-1 Big 12), who kept alive their chances of playing for a conference title and in the College Football Playoff by beating their biggest rival for the 16th consecutive time.

Kansas (2-6, 1-4) got the ball back after Tennant's field goal and picked up a quick first down. But Jalon Daniels bookended a short completion with a couple of incomplete passes, and he was tracked down on fourth down with less than a minute to go, giving the Wildcats the ball back and the chance to run out the clock.

Daniels threw for 209 yards and accounted for two touchdowns and an interception. Devin Neal ran for 66 yards and a score.

Kansas opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown drive, then looked as if it would take control a few minutes later, when Daniels spotted Quentin Skinner running open down the middle of the field. But the senior wide receiver dropped the would-be 49-yard touchdown throw, and the Jayhawks ultimately were forced to punt.

The Wildcats seized on the opening, then took advantage of another Kansas blunder.

After Johnson led a 95-yard drive to knot the game, Kansas freshman Jameel Croft Jr. inexplicably caught the ensuing kickoff at the 1-yard line and stepped out of bounds. Neal was stuffed for a safety on the very next play, and Kansas State followed with a 59-yard drive and its second touchdown in a matter of minutes.

Daniels calmed the Jayhawks, though, and his touchdown throw to Luke Grimm got them within 16-14 at the break.

The teams swapped touchdowns to begin the second half, then traded punts, before the Jayhawks regained the lead on Daniels' touchdown run late in the third quarter — the second year in a row they have led Kansas State in the second half.

The Jayhawks still led 27-26 with 3:44 to go when Daniels, trying to scramble near midfield, went airborne and had the ball pop loose. Brendan Mott was there to recover it for the Wildcats, giving Johnson and Co. one last chance with the ball.

They did just enough to set up Tennant's go-ahead field goal inside the final 2 minutes.

Kansas dominated the game for long stretches but was forced to overcome itself. Daniels had two turnovers, something that was a problem for him earlier in the season, and the Jayhawks made too many special teams blunders.

Kansas State had 479 yards of total offense but struggled on third down. It also had a chance to score a go-ahead TD early in the fourth quarter, but Johnson's pass sailed high and the Wildcats kicked a chip-shot field goal that nearly cost them.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has announced that Kansas men's basketball will play Indiana in the 2027 Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium on Nov. 12, 2027.

The contest will be a part of a double header marking the first-ever basketball games played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Duke will play Arizona in the other contest and both games will be televised on TNT Sports' networks and platforms.&nbsp;

Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders and Super Bowl LVIII, will also serve as the site for the 2028 NCAA Men's Final Four.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson turned the football over six times in a 27-22 loss to No. 13 Butler on Saturday at Gowans Stadium, handing the Blue Dragons its first loss of the season.

HutchCC (7-1, 3-1 KJCCC) saw its 22-game Jayhawk Conference winning streak come to a close, as well as a 29-game regular season winning streak. The loss marked the first regular season loss since falling to Independence on Oct. 7, 2021.&nbsp;

Butler (5-2, 5-0) scored 21 of its 27 points off of Hutchinson turnovers, including the would-be game winning score with 13:52 to play.

The Blue Dragons scored the final 12 points of the game, after falling behind 27-10, Hutchinson pulled within five, but the fifth interception thrown by Christian Johnson with just over a minute to play would ultimately end the comeback bid.

Waymond Jordan Jr. rushed for 121 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown, the sixth time this season the sophomore has rushed for 100-plus yards.

Hutchinson outgained Butler, 508-217, including 286 through the air and 222 on the ground.

The Blue Dragons are off until Nov. 9, when they'll host Highland at Gowans Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.&nbsp;

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and will play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. It's his first start since being concussed in Week 2. The Dolphins designated Tagovailoa to return to practice on Monday after he spent about a month on injured reserve after suffering the third known concussion of his NFL career on Sept. 12. Tagovailoa has since met with numerous medical experts who deemed it safe for him to play again. MAIZE, Kan. - The Hutch High Salthawks closed out their regular season on the road at Maize South and came away with a huge win over the Mavericks 42-20 on Friday night.

Levi Kepler put up his best individual numbers of the season throwing for one touchdown and running for another while going 2 for 5 passing for 75 yards and earning 48 yards on the ground.

Kade Smith three of the six Salthawk touchdowns including the nail in the coffin run on 2nd and 24 from the Hutchinson 46 yard line. Smith basically said "enough of this" and romped 54 yards up the sidelines with 2:13 remaining in the contest.

Hutchinson jumped out early taking advantage of a Maverick muffed punt on the Hutchinson 46 yard line.

The Salhawks put together an 11 play, 54 yard drive that took up 5 minutes and 35 seconds. Smith finished it off with a 2 yard run to put Hutch up 7-0 after the Taysen Runyon PAT with 4:48 to go in the 1st quarter.

Kepler found Taishaun Williams from 39 yards out with 2:46 to go in the first plus another Runyon PAT to extend the lead to 14-0 after 1 quarter of play.

Maize South got on the board with a 3 yard Christian McDonald run in the second quarter to pull within 8 after the PAT kick was not any good.

The Salthawks answered back with a Kepler to Williams pass to the Maize South 2 yard line that set up a 2 yard TD run by Terrell King with 5:33 to go in quarter two. Hutch 21, Maize South 6.

Kepler then ran a perfectly executed left side option read and ran untouched for 38 yards to score with 1:51 prior to halftime. Hutch 28, Maize South 6.

But Maize South marched right down the field to set up a 3 yard TD pass to Landen Gatto with 7 seconds remaining in the quarter. Gatto had a huge night with 13 catches for 183 yards and 1 touchdown on the night. That score made the halftime score Hutch 28, Maize South 13.

Hutchinson scored first in the second half with a Smith touchdown run from 5 yards out with 8:57 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Tate McNew got Maize South on the scoreboard with a 7 yard pass to Stratton Ebers in the right corner of the Salthawk end zone to close the gap to 35-20 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was back and forth with each team exchanging possessions until Hutch took advantage of Maize South catch and fumble near mid field that set up the final run by Smith for 54 yards for the final Salthawk touchdown with 2:13 to go.

Smith finished the night with 24 carries for 181 yards. Smith closes out the regular season with 1,374 yard for his senior season.

Hutchinson (6-2) will now host Salina South (1-7) next Friday, November 1st for the start of the playoffs. The Salthawks finished tied for the 5A West 3rd spot but were granted the 4th seed after a coin flip. The full 5A bracket can be found on the KSHSAA site.

🏈 Kepler and Smith shine for Hutch High in win over Maize South

WINFIELD, Kan. —&nbsp;Running the same Kansas Veterans Home course where she shattered the Blue Dragon women’s 5K record time two weeks ago, Hutchinson Community College freshman Faith Jepchirchir became the third Hutchinson runner in program history to win the Region 6 individual championship.

Jepchirchir paced the No. 6-ranked Blue Dragon women to a Region 6 Championship runner-up team finish and a Jayhawk West championship on Friday.

The Blue Dragons were edged for the regional team championship by one point – 69-70 – by Butler. Dodge City was third with 73 points and Cloud County was fourth with 76 points. This was Hutchinson’s second-straight Region 6 runner-up finish.

The Blue Dragons won their third Jayhawk West championship, the first since 2020, with 52 points, edging Dodge City by two points and Cloud County by four points.

Jepchirchir joined Ruth Limo (2001) and Louise Cocking (2021) as Blue Dragon runners to win the Region 6 individual championship. Jepchirchir broke Serenity Larson’s 2022 Region 6 record time at 5,000 meters with a time of 17:08.43 on Friday.

This is Jepchirchir’s third event championship of the season, also winning the Terry Masterson Classic and the Region 6 Preview two weeks ago at the Kansas Veterans Home course.

Sophomore Jordyn Picolet continued her impressive sophomore season with a sixth-place Region VI finish and fifth-place KJCCC finish. Picolet improved her personal-best time to 17:48.80, which remains third fastest at 5,000 meters in Blue Dragon history.

Sophomore Abigail Grantham moved up to 11th place on the Blue Dragon all-time 5K list with a time of 19:06.76. Grantham placed 16th in the region and 13th in the Jayhawk West.

Freshman Ava Lemaster posted a PR time of 20:04.37 to place 27th in the region and 20th in the conference.

Sophomore Laura Avila was 31st in the region and 22nd in the conference with a time of 20:22.56.
