The Wichita State women's basketball team picked up a 54-44 win over Florida Atlantic on Wednesday at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers trailed 30-29 at halftime, before out-scoring the Owls 16-4 in the third quarter to take the 45-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.

With the win, Wichita State improved their record to 10-14 overall, 2-9 in American Athletic Conference play. FAU is now 8-16 overall, 2-9 in the AAC.&nbsp;

Jayla Murray led the way for the Shockers with 18 points and five rebounds, while Bre'Yon White scored 10.&nbsp;

The WSU defense held FAU to just 27% from the floor and forced 16 Owl turnovers.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/WVUWBB/status/1887316306342314466" target="_blank">Sydney Shaw had 13 of her career-high 22 points in the first quarter</a>&nbsp;and No. 18 West Virginia rolled to a 76-43 win over Kansas on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers held the Jayhawks scoreless for more than seven minutes to start the game and were never threatened. Shaw opened the game with a 3-pointer, then hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer and added seven more points for 13 of the first 15 points.

Jordan Harrison converted a three-point play with 44 seconds to go in the first quarter to make it 18-0. S’Mya Nichols had a three-point play for the first Kansas points at the 35-second mark and Britta Harshaw hit a 3 at the buzzer to make it 18-6.

The Jayhawks never got within single digits and it was 39-19 at the half when Harrison hit a 3 in the closing seconds. The biggest lead was 72-37 with just less than three minutes remaining.

JJ Quinerly had 16 points, all in the second half and 12 in the fourth quarter for West Virginia (18-4, 8-3 Big 12 Conference), which won its 14th-straight at home. Harrison had 16 points. Quinerly moved into sixth on the WVU career scoring list with 1,763 points.

Nichols had 12 points for the Jayhawks (14-9, 4-8), eight below her average. Kansas also had a season low in points by 13.

The Mountaineers had 36 points off 29 Kansas turnovers, with 17 steals. The Mountaineers forced more than 20 turnovers for the 18th time and their average is 25 with 15 steals. West Virginia also had a 36-25 rebounding advantage.

West Virginia is at Houston on Saturday when Kansas plays at Cincinnati.

🏀 No. 18 West Virginia women thump KU

Sundell made a turnaround jumper in the lane and was fouled as the Wildcats took a 41-36 lead in the closing moments of the third quarter.

The 17 turnovers by TCU proved costly and was a bit of an anomaly for a team that averages just 11 per game this season. Kansas State scored 15 points off those mistakes.

TCU hosts Texas Tech on Saturday and Kansas State travels to No. 25 Oklahoma State the same day.

🏀 Sundell scores 27 and leads No. 12 K-State over No. 9 TCU

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Every once in a while, when an unsuspecting offense is least expecting it,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-kelce-swift-hurts-barkley-chiefs-eagles-7228a2415050fdacaf7e5b1eaec4b923">Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid</a>&nbsp;will inch his way toward the line of scrimmage, then take off like a thunderbolt toward the quarterback the moment the ball is snapped.

It looks so simple, the way Reid blitzes, as if all he’s doing is timing up the QB’s cadence.

The timing is a big part of it, of course, but so is the way defensive linemen tie up the offensive line. The way the rest of the defensive backfield disguises coverage. The way pass rushers stunt or otherwise provide pressure on the quarterback from the outside, making him move to the exact point on the field where Reid expects to meet him.

The mad scientist pulling all those strings is Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs defensive coordinator, whose job in helping Kansas City get back to the Super Bowl had him interviewing with several clubs last week for another shot at being a head coach.

“He’s incredible,” Reid said ahead of Sunday’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-8d39bd71118260412913f13138c40328">Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles</a>. “My first year here, like, the amount of pressures and cover-zeros and simulated pressures — the sheer volume of it was a little bit like, ‘Wow, this is really deep.’ But as you get a ton of reps at it and start to get a feel for the defense, you’re almost hungry for it. Like, ‘Let’s put in more, put in something else nobody has ever seen.’”

Hard to believe there is something left to invent.

But that deep, complicated defensive playbook and all those exotic blitzes that “Spags” has developed over the years are a big reason why the Chiefs are back facing the Eagles on the NFL’s biggest stage.

“I love this defense, man. Spags, we’ve always trusted him and everybody that plays under him,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said. “They’re so sound and they play their tails off, and they throw their heart out there on the field every single week.”

In the early years of their dynastic run, the Chiefs defense was a liability, and it was up to Patrick Mahomes and the rest of a high-powered offense to bail it out. But that changed when Spagnuolo arrived, and general manager Brett Veach began investing free-agent money and draft capital into upgrades on that side of the ball. The result has been a defense among the NFL’s best in scoring the past few years, and one that was particularly good against the run this season.

That could prove pivotal as the Chiefs try to slow down&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-chiefs-eagles-barkley-d9e02612b0604ef5c69c7734444d5a63">Eagles running back Saquon Barkley</a>&nbsp;in the big game.

And when it comes to slowing down the passing attack, well, that’s where blitzes come into play. They can come from any level of the defense, at any point in time, and the only thing they have in common is the frequency in which they succeed.

“He doesn’t do it every down,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Sometimes you get the stigma of being a ‘blitz guy.’ It’s when he does it and how he knows the protections or the run scheme, you know, for the run blitzes. How he understands the scheme and when to go about using it. I think that’s what makes him so unique and why they’re so successful.”

The success of the Kansas City defense coupled with Spagnuolo’s relatable personality have made him a fan favorite, and why the Jets and Jaguars were among the teams that interviewed him for their head coaching vacancies.

Spagnuolo had a chance with the Rams from 2009-11, going 10-38 as a head coach. But the deck was stacked against him; the team was unsettled at quarterback, the most important position in the game, and was in the midst of a major rebuilding effort.

Andy Reid would love to see his longtime friend get another chance. But in the meantime, he’s thankful Spagnuolo and so much of his defensive staff have remained intact for several years, providing consistency on that side of the ball.

“They know the scheme like the back of their hand. Spags has confidence in them and then the players have confidence in their coaches and Spags,” Reid said. “You have to stay focused during the meetings, you have to detail it at practice, you have to detail the walkthroughs that you do meetings on the field. Then, most of all, you have to execute it on game day. But there’s that trust, that whole foundation that you’ve built with the trust and these guys, they’ve got that.

She has also registered 0.8 steals per game. This season, the product of Byron, Minnesota, has registered 10 games with two or more blocks. She tied her career-high and tied the school record for blocks in a conference game with eight against Arizona on Jan. 16. Lee also paces the Wildcats this season with 16.0 points on a career-high .654 field goal percentage. In her career, Lee holds the school record and ranks fourth in Big 12 history for career blocks with 351 and owns the school record for career blocks per game at 2.66. She is the first player in program history with 300 or more career blocks and 100 or more career steals. 🏀 K-State’s Lee named to Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List

Wednesday night's Jayhawk Conference women's and men's basketball games at Coffeyville have been postponed.

The make-up date for the games at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville has yet to be determined and will be announced when finalized.

The women's game will feature the No. 6 Blue Dragons (21-1, 15-1) and the No. 22 Red Ravens (17-3, 12-3). The Blue Dragon men (14-8, 10-6) will then meet the No. 10-ranked Coffeyville men (17-4, 13-2).

The games will both be broadcast on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5). The only video stream for the game will be on the Red Raven Network on YouTube.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools held a National Signing Day ceremony inside the Salthawk Activity Center on Wednesday morning for student-athletes that will be moving on to a two-year or four-year institution.&nbsp;

Eight current Salthawks signed their national letter of intents in front of a large crowd in the SAC. Each student-athlete had a table to decorate with their future schools' apparel.

The eight signees that were a part of the signing day activity are listed below.

The Blue Dragons enter play Wednesday tied with No. 5 Dodge City for first place in the Jayhawk Conference at 15-1 record. The Red Ravens are firmly in third place in the KJCCC at 12-3, 2 1/2 games behind both the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors.
Hutchinson plays its third nationally ranked opponent this season. The Dragons lost to then No. 3 Dodge City on January 18 and defeated now-No. 20 Murray State on November 9. The Blue Dragons defeated Butler on January 8. The Grizzlies are receiving votes in this week's rankings.
The Blue Dragons ran their win streak to four games with a 90-49 win over Independence on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/katcher_brynne_qgrf">Brynne Katcher</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/norris_kahlen_2uos">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 18 points to pace the Blue Dragons, who have averaged 87.8 points offensively and have allowed 47.8 points defensively.
The Red Ravens ran their season-long win streak to seven games one week ago after an 86-43 win over Independence. Over their win streak, the Ravens have averaged 73.3 points offensively and 53.0 points defensively.
Hutchinson earned a 66-53 victory over Coffeyville in the teams' first meeting on December 4 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons held the Red Ravens to a season-low 26.3 percent shooting, while Hutchinson drilled a season-high 15 3-point goals on 32 attempts. Four Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by Norris with 13 points. Karliey Parker had 12 points to lead Coffeyville.</div>

The Blue Dragons defeated the Tigers 70-62 on January 4 and stunned the Grizzlies 73-70 on January 8.
Hutchinson heads into Wednesday's contest after dropping 3 of its last 4 games. The Blue Dragons allowed season highs for points allowed an opponent shooting percentage as Independence's No. 1-KJCCC offense rolled to a 104-85 victory. The Pirates shot 58.5 percent with 11 3-pointers. Chianti Tramble had 41 points against the Blue Dragons, which is an individual opponent high.
Coffeyville has reeled off three-straight wins and seven victories in its last eight games. The Red Ravens had their second league bye on Saturday. One week ago, the Red Ravens trailed Independence 54-48 early in the second half and went on a 55-20 tear over the final 16 minutes for a 103-74 victory over the Pirates.
The Blue Dragons dropped the first meeting of the season with Coffeyville, falling 81-77 on December 5 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons led 30-26 at halftime, but were outscored 56-47 in the second half as Coffeyville shot 56.8 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/arnold_khalil_9vae">Khalil Arnold</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to lead the Dragons with 17 points. Sophomore shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;and freshman pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/thomas_aubree_o0p2">Aubree Thomas</a>&nbsp;were named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively on Tuesday.

The No. 22-ranked Blue Dragons opened the 2025 season last Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Western Oklahoma State, winning 6-3 and 4-1.

Backhaus, a sophomore shortstop from Newkirk, Oklahoma, went 4 for 8 with a double, run scored two RBIs and four stolen bases. Backhaus had three hits in Game 1, including a two-run double.

Making her collegiate debut, Thomas tossed six shutout innings in the 4-1 win in Game 2 win. Thomas scattered just four hits and didn't face more than four batters in any single inning. She struck out three and walked only one over her six innings. Thomas fielded her position flawlessly with three assists in three defensive chances.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore track and field athlete&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/thid_david_57oh">David Thid</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Track and Field Runner of the Week on Tuesday after an impressive performance at the Washburn Open on Saturday.

The sophomore from Ronninge, Sweden broke a school record and qualified for the NJCAA national championships in two events on Saturday.

Thid broke the oldest record remaining on the Blue Dragon indoor track record books, breaking a 38-year record in the men's 400 meters to win the Washburn Open with a national qualifying time of 47.16 seconds. Thid's time in the 400 meters is currently the fifth-fastest in the NJCAA this season and fastest non-altitude converted time.

Thid also ran the anchor leg of the Blue Dragons' fourth-place 4x400 relay team that qualified for nationals with the second-fastest Blue Dragon time in team history of 3:14.89. That is the eighth-fastest time in the nation for the 4x400 relay this season.

This is Thid's fourth career KJCCC Runner of the Week award. He won three conference awards as a freshman.

The New York Rangers have acquired veteran center J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks in a multiplayer deal. The Rangers sent center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a conditional draft pick to Vancouver. New York also received defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom. The Canucks were expected to trade either Miller or Elias Pettersson after a reported rift between the two stars. Miller was a last-minute scratch before Vancouver's game at Dallas on Friday night, and the teams announced the deal during the game. The 31-year-old Miller was drafted by the Rangers and played for New York for six seasons before being dealt to Tampa Bay in 2018.

Pelicans' Dejounte Murray suffers lower right leg injury and team braces for long absence

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray left the Pelicans' game against Boston in the first quarter with an injury to his lower right leg. Murray had driven into the lane and took a shot, then went to chase after his miss. But he fell to the court and grabbed at the area near his right foot. When he got up, he hobbled toward the nearby Pelicans bench. The Pelicans said Murray would not return to Friday's game. Afterward, coach Willie Green and Pelicans players made clear they expect to be without Murray for an extended period.

Mercury acquire Satou Sabally from Wings as part of 3-team deal, AP source says

Satou Sabally is heading to the Phoenix Mercury as part of a three-team trade. That's according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday night because the deal hadn't been announced. The Dallas Wings received Ty Harris and Kiki Herbert Harrigan from the Mercury as well as NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 overall draft pick from the Indiana Fever. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Sepp Straka beat most of the weather and shot another 65 to build a three-shot lead in the AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He got a preview late in his round of what to expect this weekend when temperatures dropped and wind increased. Rory McIlroy had four bogeys in a six-hole stretch and salvaged his round of 70 with an eagle on the final hole. He was six behind. Scottie Scheffler saved par from the beach on the 18th hole and shot 70. He was seven back. Straka is coming off a victory in his last start in the California desert.

Tennis Hall of Famer Pam Shriver's trophies are back after being taken in stolen car amid LA fires

International Tennis Hall of Fame member Pam Shriver has her trophies back. Shriver said Friday that she regained the dozen or so pieces of hardware that were in a car stolen from the hotel where she was staying after evacuating from her home during the outbreak of the devastating wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area. Shriver won 21 Grand Slam doubles championships — all but one alongside Martina Navratilova — a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and a total of 111 doubles titles. Shriver, now a TV commentator, was inducted into the sport's Hall of Fame in 2002.

Saquon Barkley could be latest in line of free agents who helped deliver Super Bowl titles

The offseason addition of Saquon Barkley helped elevate a sluggish offense for the Philadelphia Eagles and lead the team to a Super Bowl. While building teams through the draft is still the most desirable avenue for success in the NFL, free agent additions have played a major role for several Super Bowl teams since unrestricted free agency came to the NFL in 1993. Would-be pro soccer players navigate NWSL futures without a college draft

Players and teams alike are navigating the first season in the National Women's Soccer League without a college draft. The NWSL became the first top-tier pro sports league in the United States to eliminate the draft last year as part of its collective-bargaining agreement with players. While many college players in years past prepared for a January draft, now they're on the open market. The players' union says the move gives players greater control over their pro careers.

International Skating Union to honor athletes killed in plane crash when Boston hosts world champs

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — International Skating Union President Jae Youl Kim has held back tears while announcing they will honor athletes and others killed in the mid-air collision near Washington, D.C., when the world championships are staged in Boston in March. Kim was visibly emotional telling media on Friday at the European championships in Estonia. Skaters, coaches and family members on their way back from a national skating camp in Wichita, Kansas, were among those who died when a passenger jet hit a helicopter on Wednesday. They included two teenage skaters, their mothers and two coaches who were part of the Skating Club of Boston. Kim also praised Dick Button, the two-time Olympic figure skating champion and broadcaster who died on Thursday at 95.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - As Yogi used to say,&nbsp;

“It’s deja vu all over again.”&nbsp; That is what it felt like in the Salthawk Activity Center Tuesday night as both Maize South Basketball teams earned big wins of the home town Salthawks with the Maverick girls winning a low scoring game that featured lots of defense 33-25 and the Salthawk boys rally coming up short in a 55-51 loss.

Maize South was led is scoring with 14 points as the 6'0" junior kept finding a way to score late in the contest. Aliyah Singhateh added 10 points including a key three point basket late in the game.

Hutch was led by seniors Grace Posh 9 points and Kaia Smith's 8.

Hutchinson was as cold as the Kansas Winter wind outside with 10 for 45 shooting on the night.

Once again, Maize South found a way to pull away late in the contest after Hutchinson had made a lopsided game in the first quarter into a classic leading by 2 points going into the final quarter 39-37.

Hutchinson trailed early in the first quarter 17 to 5 but the Salthawks flipped a poor start into a slim 24-23 lead at the half.

The Maverick's Tucker Lowe only had four points in the game, but his final basket inside the final 15 seconds in transition made the final score 55-51 after the Salthawks had cut the Maverick lead to two at 53-51 with a late rally including forcing several Maize South turnovers.

Maize South's Jalen Batiste was the game's leading scorer with 20 points including 13 in the first half. Reece Pauly added 10.

Hutch High was lead by Terrell King with 14, Lamar Govain also had 14 and Tremell Walker added 12. Walker played outstanding defense in the first half to help with the Salthawks rally in the second quarter when Walker hit two big three point shots to give the Salthawks the lead 24-23 at the half.

Hutchinson is now stuck in a seven game losing streak after starting the year 4-1. The Salthawks have not found a way to win several close games in 2025 and are now 4-8.

Hutchinson host Salina South on Friday at the SAC for the 3rd annual Pack-the-SAC night where local elementary schools will see who wins the school wide pizza party donated by Papa John's pizza and the Hutchinson High School Athletic Department for which Elementary School has the most participants at the event.

Everyone is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the local food bank. Kids get a free Salthawk Pack-the-SAC t-shirt for a food item donation plus get in free to the games Friday night. Plus Hutch Regional Medical Center is helping out with $1 hot dogs.

The ICT Aerobelle Granny Basketball team will preform at the half of the boys game with an exhibition of how girls basketball was played back when it originated.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — David N’Guessan scored 22 points, including two free throws with 55.7 seconds left, and Kansas State took advantage of Arizona State missing two free throws at 4.1 for a 71-70 victory on Tuesday night.

After N’Guessan's free throws, Alston Mason made two at the stripe to get Arizona State within 71-70 with 41.7 left. Dug McDaniel missed a 3-pointer for Kansas State and Arizona State guard BJ Freeman grabbed the defensive rebound before racing the other way.

Freeman had it poked away but it ended up in the hands of Jayden Quaintance, who was fouled on a dunk attempt with 4.1 left. Quaintance, the youngest player in Division I, hit the back iron on both free throws and McDaniel secured the rebound and passed it ahead to run out the clock.

Kansas State (11-11, 5-6 Big 12 Conference) has won four straight games for the first time this season.

Max Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half for Kansas State. Brendan Hausen added 12 points, and Coleman Hawkins had 11 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Mason led Arizona State (12-10, 3-8) with 20 points. Basheer Jihad added 15, Freeman had 14 and Quaintance finished with 10 rebounds to go with three points. Adam Miller received a Flagrant 2 foul with 7:54 left in the second half after an interaction with McDaniel.

Arizona State started the game on a 15-0 run before Kansas State closed the half on a 22-6 run to take a 35-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Jones. The Wildcats also stated the second half on a 13-3 run to extend it to 48-35 lead as Arizona State was just 1 of 12 from the field spanning the halftime break.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Travis Kelce has no plans to retire anytime soon even if the Kansas City Chiefs win a third straight Super Bowl on Sunday.

The future plans for the 35-year-old Kelce have been a lingering question as his fame has risen off the field thanks to his relationship with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/taylor-swift">pop star Taylor Swift</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-kelce-smarter-than-a-celebrity-interview-d25a9933be6720bd0cbafa1dd2547c22">a media career</a>&nbsp;thanks to one of the most popular sports podcasts.

Kelce was asked at opening night festivities Monday night before Kansas City plays Philadelphia in the Super Bowl where he plans to be in three years.

“Hopefully still playing football,” he said. “I love doing this, I love coming into work every day. I feel like I still have a lot of good football left in me. We’ll see what happens. I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal knowing football only lasts for so long. You have to find a way to get into another career and another profession. I’ve been doing that in my offseason. But for the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football.”

Kelce is still playing at a high level even if he has fallen off a bit from his peak. He had 97 catches this season but only gained 823 yards and scored three TDs.

Kelce had a throwback game in the divisional round win over Houston with seven catches for 117 yards and enters the Super Bowl with the most catches ever in the playoffs (174) and second to Hall of Famer Jerry Rice in yards receiving (2,039) and TD catches (20).

Kelce was one of the most popular players with the media during opening night with a large group of reporters and others surrounding his podium for the entire hour, peppering him with questions on all sorts of topics from football to dances to whether he planned to give Swift a ring if the Chiefs win on Sunday. He quickly responded, “A Super Bowl ring? Next question.”

Kelce did say his relationship with Swift helps him on the football field by providing motivation that he needs to work as hard as she does to remain at the top of his game.

Kultida Woods, the Thai-born mother of Tiger Woods, died Tuesday morning, a week after being seen attending his indoor TMRW Golf League in Florida.

Woods did not reveal how his 78-year-old mother died in his&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/TigerWoods/status/1886816730569486452">social media post</a>&nbsp;announcing her death.

He described her as a “force of nature” who was quick with the needle and was his biggest supporter from the time she drove him to junior golf tournaments in California to being there for his 15 major championships, often wearing her wide-brimmed visor and sunglasses.

“My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,” Woods wrote. “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible. She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.”

Woods' father, Earl, died in 2006. Kultida had moved to South Florida when Woods relocated from Orlando to Jupiter.

President Donald Trump was among those who reached out&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113946642879077926">with a post on his Truth Social</a>, calling her “an amazing influence” on Woods.

Travis Kelce passed on an inquiry about popping the question to Taylor Swift.

Been here, done that. That's how the Kansas City Chiefs handled the annual extravaganza that kicks off Super Bowl week.

The Philadelphia Eagles were here two years ago so they weren't fazed by the silliness either, though their most dynamic player is new to the wild experience that could overwhelm teams that aren’t used to the circus atmosphere.

Saquon Barkley got his first taste of this made-for-television spectacle. Nick Sirianni received letters, and a kiss from Chad Johnson. Jalen Hurts even cracked a smile or two.

Before Mahomes, Kelce and the Chiefs take on Hurts,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-saquon-barkley-free-agency-9abe4dace17d6ac88ada369a77607a45">Barkley</a>&nbsp;and the Eagles in the Super Bowl on Sunday, they had to tackle the media in waves.

Barkley wasn't here two years ago when the Eagles lost to the Chiefs 38-35. He left the rival New York Giants to join a winning team and did his part with a historic season.

“That’s why me and my family made the decision to come to Philadelphia, to have an opportunity to play in the Super Bowl. And here we are,” Barkley said.

The Chiefs have been here five times in the past six years so they're used to the strange questions and odd requests that have become far too common on opening night.

Mahomes picked NBA players for a mock football team, choosing Russell Westbrook at quarterback and Anthony Edwards at wide receiver. He even asked the media for restaurant recommendations.

Kelce talked up Swift's pop tarts and said he hopes to match her energy on stage when he's on the field. But asked if he plans to propose to his Grammy-winning superstar girlfriend, Kelce pulled a Drew Rosenhaus: “Super Bowl ring? Next question.”

Players were asked their favorite foods, colors, Kendrick Lamar songs and more. A Mexican television reporter gave Sirianni a stack of letters from fans. He also got a kiss on the head from Johnson, the former Bengals star also known as Ochocinco. The usually stoic Hurts cracked up laughing when someone tossed him a cookie — it was an errant throw. Browns quarterback Jameis Winston, working for a television network, fired questions at Darius Slay before telling him to eat a "W."

The Eagles went first, spending an hour talking to thousands of reporters from across the globe inside the Superdome. The Chiefs came later and received a loud ovation.

Media day has evolved from a daytime event on Tuesdays to a live, ticketed, prime-time showcase on national television. More than 6,000 media members from 26 countries were accredited to cover the Super Bowl last year in Las Vegas.

Yes, this is where a female reporter showed up in a wedding dress and veil and proposed to Tom Brady in Arizona in 2008. He politely declined.

Football’s Xs and Os take a back seat for the first night.

The Big Easy is hosting its 11th big game and first since the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Harbaugh Brothers Bowl in February 2013.

The Chiefs are chasing history, aiming to become the first NFL team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era. The Eagles are seeking the franchise’s second Vince Lombardi trophy.

“We're obsessed with winning,” owner Jeffrey Lurie said.

Both teams arrived Sunday and every player and coach was available to the media for one hour on Monday night. A select group of players, including head coaches and quarterbacks, also have media sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Due to the hectic schedule, most of the preparation was completed last week. Game plans were installed and both teams held normal practices because this week won’t be routine.

One person who’ll be under the microscope this week is Eagles offensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-kellen-moore-saints-3b46d282a5d09f47eb66555b13e6fc2f">Kellen Moore</a>, who is a frontrunner to become the head coach of the Saints. Moore can’t accept the job until after the Super Bowl but he has to be preparing to assemble a coaching staff while focusing on the task at hand.

Staying focused will be a priority for everyone on both teams. Avoiding distractions, especially the first night, could set the tone for winning it all Sunday.

IRVING, Texas -&nbsp;Today, the Big 12 Conference announced its 2025 football schedule as the league celebrates its 30th football season. The schedule will see all 16 programs play nine league games. The 30th year of Big 12 Football will kickoff in Dublin, Ireland, as Iowa State and Kansas State square off in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. This marks the first-ever Week 0 Conference game for the Big 12, as well as the first time a Big 12 competition has been held abroad. Following 15 weeks of action, the Big 12 season will conclude with the 2025 Big 12 Championship Game, held at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, TX, in the first week of December. For the first time ever, the Big 12 Conference and Big 12 Studios will host a Big 12&nbsp;Schedule Reveal Show, which will be broadcast on ESPNU, FS2, truTV and streaming on MAX and ESPN+. The Big 12 will play 14 games against opponents from other Power Four conferences throughout non-conference play, with matchups beginning in Week One with Cincinnati hosting Nebraska at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, TCU playing at North Carolina and Oklahoma State taking on Oregon in Eugene the following week. Other notable non-conference games on Big 12 campuses include Baylor versus Auburn, Colorado hosting Georgia Tech, Iowa State's rivalry game against Iowa and UCF versus North Carolina. Defending Big 12 Champions Arizona State will kick off their conference slate in Waco against Baylor on Sept. 20, while a rematch of the 2024 Alamo Bowl will see BYU and Colorado square off in Boulder on Sept. 27. The University of Kansas baseball team will play two games at Equity Bank Park in downtown Wichita in the 2025 season.&nbsp;
