HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bishop Carroll swept Hutchinson on opening night of the Allen Samuels Classic on Friday at the Salthawk Activity Center, taking both the girls’ and boys’ contests as the high school basketball season tipped off.
The Golden Eagle girls rallied past Hutchinson 53-41 after the Salthawks opened the game on a 9-0 run and later built a 26-16 halftime lead. Carroll turned the momentum by forcing turnovers and exploiting Hutchinson’s foul trouble, limiting the Salthawks to just four third-quarter points.
Freshman Danai Morgan led Hutchinson with 15 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Avery McCorry powered Bishop Carroll with 16.
In the boys’ matchup, Bishop Carroll led 40-25 at halftime and never relinquished control, rolling to a 70-41 victory. Brody Kreutzer scored 24 to pace the Golden Eagles, who shot 7 of 9 from beyond the arc and displayed balanced scoring throughout.
Hutchinson’s Lamar Govain led the Salthawks with eight points. Hutch showed early promise with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 18 in the second quarter, but Carroll’s efficiency on the perimeter proved too much to overcome.
In the afternoon games, the Andover Central girls defeated Great Bend 41-23, while the Great Bend boys dominated Andover Central 78-51 behind Ian Premer’s 30-point performance.
