The win is Wichita State's first in a rubber match this season, securing a 2-1 series win over the Pirates and moving the Shockers back into a three-way tie for the eighth and final seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament. The Shockers (15-31, 7-14) squandered a late 7-3 lead, allowing East Carolina (27-21, 11-10) back into the game with a four-run top of the seventh that evened the score at 7-7. The score stayed there until the bottom of the ninth, when WSU capitalized on a dropped fly ball by Pirates right fielder Alex Peltier that put&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/9191" rel="smarttag" rev="9191">Jordan Rogers</a></dfn>&nbsp;at second base with nobody out. After a walk to&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/9186" rel="smarttag" rev="9186">Mauricio Millan</a></dfn>, Gustafson showed bunt on a 1-0 pitch then pulled the bat back and chopped a ground ball through the open left side of the infield, scoring Rogers with the winning run. Pirates reliever Bradley Zayac (1-2) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run over 3.0 innings of work.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/nick-potter/9404" rel="smarttag" rev="9404">Nick Potter</a></dfn>&nbsp;(2-1) picked up the win for Wichita State, allowing just one baserunner over 2.1 scoreless frames. Wichita State grabbed control of the game with a five-run bottom of the fourth inning, erasing a 2-1 deficit. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out for&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaleb-duncan/9419" rel="smarttag" rev="9419">Kaleb Duncan</a></dfn>, who laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Gustafson to tie the game, 2-2.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/9183" rel="smarttag" rev="9183">Camden Johnson</a></dfn>&nbsp;earned a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run, then&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kam-durnin/9177" rel="smarttag" rev="9177">Kam Durnin</a></dfn>&nbsp;scored two with a sacrifice fly when Duncan alertly saw the ball loose on the infield and came in to score all the way from second.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/9191" rel="smarttag" rev="9191">Jordan Rogers</a></dfn>&nbsp;made it 6-2 with a two-out RBI single. The two teams traded runs in the fifth, as East Carolina got a solo homer from Alex Bouche and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/cole-dillon/9411" rel="smarttag" rev="9411">Cole Dillon</a></dfn>&nbsp;responded with an RBI single to reach 7-3. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jeremiah-arnett/9174" rel="smarttag" rev="9174">Jeremiah Arnett</a></dfn>&nbsp;got a no-decision as the Wichita State starter, allowing four hits and two runs over 3.2 innings. Gustafson led the way offensively with three hits, while Dillon, Duncan and Millan each added two knocks. The Shockers are back in action on Tuesday night against BYU. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT.</div>

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;&ndash; Kansas softball fell to UCF 8-6 on May 4 in its final home game of the season at Arrocha Ballpark. UCF improved to 32-21-1 (12-12 Big 12), while Kansas dropped to 22-27 (6-18 Big 12). Junior&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lizzy-ludwig/6881" rel="smarttag" rev="6881">Lizzy Ludwig</a></dfn>&nbsp;got the start for the Jayhawks, retiring UCF's first three batters. Kansas went hitless in the bottom half of the inning. UCF recorded the game's first hit in the second, but Kansas ended the frame with a double play to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the second, the Jayhawks came alive. The Knights tied the game in the fourth with three runs. Freshman&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kennedy-diggs/15857" rel="smarttag" rev="15857">Kennedy Diggs</a></dfn>&nbsp;took over in the fifth, holding UCF scoreless for two straight innings. Kansas had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth but left a runner in scoring position. In the sixth, Kansas loaded the bases and Tatum delivered again with a two-run single up the middle to reclaim a 6-4 lead heading into the final inning. Diggs recorded Kansas' first strikeout of the game in the seventh, but UCF loaded the bases with one out. Bruno came in for a relief appearance, but the Knights rallied for four runs, capped by a three-run homer to center field. Kansas couldn't respond in the bottom half, sealing the 8-6 loss. Up Next Kansas closes out its regular season and is set travel to Oklahoma City to compete in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament from May 7-10.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Wichita State (28-24-1, 15-11-1) will be the No. 5 seed in next week's American Athletic Conference Championship. They will face the winner of No. 8 Tulsa and No. 9 UTSA on Wednesday, May 7 in Tampa. After going hitless over the first two games of the series, Eck bounced back with a 3-for-4 day that included a double and two RBIs. Neither team found the run column through the first four innings until the top of the fifth when Wichita State broke up the shutout with a trio of runs. The ball never left the infield during the frame, as the Shockers used the small ball to score all three runs. Nihart carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth and had retired eight straight Tigers until a leadoff double broke it up. That leadoff double would turn into a run two batters later on an RBI fielder's choice. Another double cut the Shockers' lead to 3-2. Eck missed a home run by an inch in the top of the sixth, as it bounced off the top of the wall and stayed in the park for an RBI double, pushing the margin to 4-2. Up Next Wichita State heads to Tampa, Fla., for the 2025 American Athletic Conference Championship, May 7-10.</div>

🥎 Shockers close out regular season with win over Tigers

COFFEYVILLE &ndash; The Kentucky Derby was ran on Saturday, the first leg of horse racing's triple crown.
The Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team completed a triple crown on Saturday. The Blue Dragon men won the Region 6 cross country championship in November and then won the Region 6 indoor track and field title in February.
On Saturday at Coffeyville's Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Blue Dragons finished off the Region 6 Triple Crown with a team victory in the Region 6 Outdoor Championship &ndash; clinching Saturday's title with a school-record performance in the 4x400 Relay.
The Blue Dragons won their first regional championship since 2013 with 135 points. Barton was second with 127 points. The Dragons trailed by nine points with two events to go, but scored 12 points in the men's 5,000 meters with a runner-up finish by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kiprotich_titus_hgfs">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;and fifth-place showing from&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/mangelson_farrin_7y5g">Farrin Mangelson</a>.

With a three-point lead entering the final event, the 4x400-meter relay, the Blue Dragon relay of&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/lester_da-shawn_ptrw">Da'Shawn Lester</a>, Ryckyle Telemaque,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/warren_d-antonio_9loc">D'Antonio Warren</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/thid_david_57oh">David Thid</a>&nbsp;placed second behind Coffeyville, but broke the Blue Dragon school record with a time of 3:09.52 to clinch the team title. Barton placed sixth in the relay.
Also winning the Jayhawk West title with 185.5 points, the Blue Dragons captured four individual Region 6 championships and scored in 21 of 22 events with multiple scorers in five events.
Sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/makalo_kebba_vl76">Kebba Makalo</a>&nbsp;won the 100 meters with a school-record time of 10.06 seconds. That mark is No. 2 in the NJCAA this season.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/legrand_leo_gfpl">Leo LeGrand</a>&nbsp;then won the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.39.
Then defending national champion&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/thid_david_57oh">David Thid</a>&nbsp;made it three-straight Blue Dragon wins on the track with a dominant victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.91 seconds.
The day started with sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/roland_ty-rique_hoh9">Ty'Rique Roland</a>&nbsp;winning the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 9 1/2 inches (2.07 meters. Roland was the Region 6 runner-up in 2024.
Kiprotich completed a 17.5-point meet with a runner-up finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:01.27. Mangelson was fifth in a time of 15:06.34.
Other Blue Dragon performances on Saturday:

+ The Blue Dragon 4x100 relay team of Warren, Giovanni Jones, Telemaque and Makalo was third with a national qualifying time of 40.54 seconds, the third-best time in Blue Dragon history.
+ Lester won the Jayhawk West championship and was third in the region in the 400 meters with a time of 47.54 seconds. Telemaque placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 48.45.
+&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/spencer_jayce_3o70">Jayce Spencer</a>&nbsp;placed third and won the Jayhawk West crown in the pole vault with a time of 13-11 3/4 (4.26 meters).

DODGE CITY &ndash; The Hutchinson Community College softball team saw its 2025 Region 6 Tournament run come to an end on Saturday evening in a third-round elimination game at Legends Park.
Butler hit two home runs and scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Blue Dragons 8-3. Earlier on Saturday, the Blue Dragons stayed alive with 4-3 win over Dodge City.
The Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragons close the 2025 season with a 37-11 record.
The Blue Dragons left the bases loaded in the first and left two runners on in the fifth. Butler had home runs in the second and fourth innings in building a 5-0 lead after five innings.
The Dragons finally broke through in the sixth. After a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;double,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/golly_taylor_l19d">Tailor Golly</a>&nbsp;hit a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/brawner_brie_hldl">Brie Brawner</a>&nbsp;then singled home&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_brooke_ngsp">Brooke Backhaus</a>&nbsp;in the sixth to cut the Butler lead to 5-3.
Things got away from the Blue Dragons in the bottom of the sixth when three errors led to three-unearned runs and rebuilt a five-run lead at 8-3.
Each team had six hits in the game.
Kruger went 2 for 4 with a double and run scored and Golly went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;and Brawner had the other Hutchinson hits.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;(21-7) went three-plus innings in her final Blue Dragon start. Tomlinson allowed four hits and three runs with two strikeouts and a walk.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/schmidt_jessica_edec">Jessica Schmidt</a>&nbsp;pitched the final three innings.

🥎 Blue Dragons finish season in Region VI Tournament

COFFEYVILLE &ndash; Led by freshman thrower Deisheline Mayer Scott, the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team matched its best team finisher ever at the Region 6 Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Scott earned her second regional runner-up finish of the meet on Saturday in the shot put and scored 16 total team points to lead the Blue Dragons to a third-place Region 6 and third-place Jayhawk West finish. The Blue Dragons matched their third-place regional performance of 2024, which was the highest finish in team history.
The Blue Dragons amassed 95 Region 6 team points, finishing behind only Cloud County (197 points) and Barton (128 points) in the regional standings. Cloud County also won the Jayhawk West title with 238 points. Barton was second with 158 points and Hutchinson was third with 135 points.

Overall, the Blue Dragons scored in 13 of 22 events and had multiple scorers in six events.
After a regional runner-up finish in the javelin on Friday, Mayer Scott added a second runner-up finish in the shot put on Saturday. Mayer Scott's best attempt in the shot put was 43 feet, 5 1/4 inches (13.24 meters). That was a personal best for Mayer Scott, who is now No. 8 in Blue Dragon outdoor history. That performance also netted Mayer Scott a Jayhawk West championship.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/grantham_abigail_40ez">Abigail Grantham</a>&nbsp;finished a strong meet with a third-place and national-qualifying performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Grantham posted the second-best time in team history with a time of 11:59.01. Grantham was also a part of Friday's third-place 4x800 relay.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/moreno_yaya_hvj4">Yaya Moreno</a>&nbsp;scored six points in the triple jump with a third-place effort in the triple jump. Her career best jump of 36-2 1/4 (11.03 meters) is ninth in Blue Dragon outdoor history.
Sophomore distance runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/picolet_jordan_z3sx">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;added a pair of fourth-place finishes to score 20 team points over the two-day competition. Picolet was fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:09.10 and was fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:55.67.

PRATT &ndash; The Hutchinson Community College baseball team took care of business on Saturday at Stanion Field with a doubleheader sweep of the Pratt Beavers.
Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/stokes_taber_u8n0">Taber Stokes</a>&nbsp;drove in two runs each to lead Hutchinson to a 7-3 win over the Beavers in Game 1 on Saturday.
Stokes followed his Game 1 performance with a two-hit game to lead the Blue Dragons to a 9-4 win that gave the Blue Dragons a 3-1 series win over the Beavers, their 12th-straight series win over Pratt dating back to 2013.
The Blue Dragons close the regular season with a 37-19 overall record and secured third place in the Jayhawk West with an 18-14 mark.
The Dragons will be the No. 3 seed out of the Jayhawk West and will unofficially play Allen in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament next week at Hobart-Detter Field. Official pairings will be released on Sunday.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 7, Pratt 3 The Blue Dragons made a four-run third inning stand up in Game 1.
Maher lined a single to right field to score&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Mustow</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/allen_griffin_bmj4">Nick Glantz</a>&nbsp;for a 2-0 lead. Then Stokes it a two-run home run to left field for a 4-0 lead.
The Dragons added to the lead when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/tygart_baker_ked6">C.J. Reid</a>&nbsp;singled home&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/hamrick_cael_iiy0">Cael Hamrick</a>&nbsp;in the top of the sixth for a 5-0 lead. The Beavers finally broke through against Blue Dragon starter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/ainsworth_seth_huwf">Seth Ainsworth</a>&nbsp;for three runs, cutting the Hutchinson lead to two runs.
Hutchinson answered right back in the top of the seventh when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Mustow</a>&nbsp;led off the inning with a home run and Glantz scored on a wild pitch for a 7-3 lead.
Ainsworth pitched 5 2-3 innings to earn the victory. He allowed seven hits and three runs with seven strikeouts and two walks.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/flores_colin_o7x4">Colin Flores</a>&nbsp;earned his seventh save of the season with 1 1-3 innings. Flores had three strikeouts.

GAME 2 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 9, Pratt 4 Stokes followed his Game 1 performance with two hits &ndash; the only Hutchinson player with a multi-hit game in Game 2 &ndash; with two runs and an RBI. Stokes walked and scored in the Dragons' four-run third inning. He then singled and scored in the Dragons' three-run fourth to build an 8-0 lead.
The Blue Dragons had just seven hits in Game 2, but racked up eight stolen bases. Reid,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;and Maher had two steals each. Stokes and Mustow had the other steals.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dean Kremer allowed three hits in seven innings, Ryan O'Hearn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Friday night for a rare low-scoring victory in their first shutout this season.

Last-place Baltimore improved to 2-16 when scoring three or fewer runs and won back-to-back games for only the second time this year.

Kremer (3-4) and Michael Wacha (1-4) battled for six scoreless innings before Adley Rutschman led off the Baltimore seventh with a double. O'Hearn followed with a drive to left-center field for his sixth home run of the year.

Emmanuel Rivera, playing because infielder Ramón Urías was scratched with right hamstring tightness, added an RBI single later in the inning.

Kansas City lost for just the second time in 11 games. Bobby Witt Jr. went 0 for 4, ending his 22-game hitting streak, as the Royals were blanked for the fourth time.

Yennier Cano pitched the eighth, and Félix Bautista finished the four-hitter for his sixth save in six chances.

Wacha allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

⚾ Witt's 22-game hitting streak ends as Orioles shutout Royals 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School baseball coach Mace Krol earned bragging rights in the first-ever Krol Series on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field, as the Salthawks picked up a pair of wins over teams coached by his brothers — Adam, head coach at Andale/Garden Plain, and Noah, head coach at Haven.

With the two wins, the Salthawks improve their record to 12-9 on the season. They will host Newton on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;

With the split for Haven, the Wildcats are now 15-7, and will travel to Hesston next Friday. The two losses drop Andale/Garden Plain to 10-10, and they will play at Buhler on Monday.

Game 1 — Hutchinson 3, Andale/Garden Plain 1

Jack Davis delivered a complete-game gem on Friday, leading the Hutchinson Salthawks to a 3-1 win over Andale/Garden Plain (10-9) in the opening game of the Krol Series.

The win marked Davis’ second complete game of the season and improved his record to 4-1. The right-hander allowed just three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out four and walking two.

Andale/Garden Plain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Brody Winter drew a bases-loaded walk. Hutchinson quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Caiden Beavers to even the score.

The Salthawks broke the tie in the sixth when GeVaugn Embers came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit sacrifice fly. An error later in the inning added an insurance run for a 3-1 lead.

Beavers, Embers, Jack Yoder, Carter Morgan, and JuJu Lyons each had one hit for Hutchinson. Beavers and Embers also drove in runs. Defensively, the Salthawks turned three double plays.

Caden Fowler took the loss for Andale/Garden Plain, allowing three runs — only one earned — on four hits over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

Noah Stanley, Austin Bugner and Jared Flax each had one hit for the Indians, while Winter drove in the team’s lone run.

Game 2 — Haven&nbsp;7, Andale/Garden Plain 2

Haven rallied in the seventh inning to stun Andale/Garden Plain 7-2 on Friday, scoring six runs in the final frame to cap a come-from-behind win.

Andale/Garden Plain opened the scoring in the third inning on a fielder’s choice by Noah Stanley. The lead held until the sixth, when Jaxson Wilder’s RBI single down the right field line tied the game for the Wildcats.

In the bottom of the sixth, Austin Bugner singled home a run to give Andale/Garden Plain a brief 2-1 advantage.

But Haven erupted in the top of the seventh, collecting five hits and scoring six runs to flip the game. The biggest blow came from Chandler Ingold, who ripped a three-run triple to right-center to put the Wildcats in control.

Ingold also earned the win on the mound, throwing a complete game. He allowed just four hits and two unearned runs while striking out three and walking four over seven innings.

Patrick Keehn took the loss for Andale/Garden Plain, pitching six and one-third innings. He gave up six runs — five earned — on seven hits, striking out five and walking two.

Haven finished with nine hits, led by Ingold and Tanner Loughrie with two apiece. Ingold went 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs.

Greyson Winter, Bugner, Easton Linnens and Cruz Kaiser each had one hit for Andale/Garden Plain. Stanley and Bugner drove in one run apiece.

Game 3 — Hutchinson 12, Haven 0 (5 Innings)

Caiden Beavers recorded his sixth three-hit game of the season as Hutchinson rolled past Haven 12-0 in five innings Friday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Beavers went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, his first home run of the season. He also singled in the first and doubled in the third, driving in a total of four runs.

The Salthawks erupted for six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Beavers’ two-run single, an RBI double by Cole Bleything, a sacrifice fly from JuJu Lyons, and RBI contributions from Jack Davis and Merrick Brotzman.

In the second, Hutchinson tacked on five more runs despite recording just one hit in the frame. Beavers’ inside-the-park homer brought in two, followed by a hit-by-pitch RBI for Brotzman, a bases-loaded walk to Oak Williams, and a sacrifice fly by Carter Morgan.

Lyons capped the scoring in the third with a line-drive single to right.

On the mound, Morgan earned his first complete-game victory, allowing just three hits over five shutout innings. He struck out five and walked two. Wyatt Bontrager took the loss for Haven, giving up six runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning.

Williams led Hutchinson with three walks and two stolen bases. The Salthawks swiped five bags as a team and turned one double play defensively.

Brogan Wray, Chandler Ingold, and Tanner Loughrie each had one hit for Haven.

Through the first month of the season, Witt Jr. landed among American League leaders in several categories, including stolen bases (3rd, 9), hits (T-4th, 38), extra-base hits (T-7th, 14) and batting average (T-9th, .322), while he led the Majors with 12 doubles. Tanner Schobel&nbsp;led off the game with a solo home run in the first at-bat in May. Four more scores followed on three homers in the top of the second: a solo shot by&nbsp;Tyler Dearden, and then back-to-back long balls on a two-run blast by Schobel and a&nbsp;Ricardo Olivar&nbsp;round-tripper.

The Cougars (22-21, 7-15 Big 12) brought nine hitters to the plate in the first and seven in the third, scoring three and four runs in those frames. Ryder Robinson hit a two-run homer in the first, his first of the night, and Parker Goff launched a three-run shot in the third. &nbsp; "BYU played better than we did tonight," said head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2603" rel="smarttag" rev="2603">Pete Hughes</a></dfn>, now is in his seventh year at the helm of the K-State baseball program. Starter Hayden Coon bounced back, striking out the side to strand the runners on second and third. BYU spotted Frost for three runs in the first frame, led by a two-run blast by Robinson. Slack took over for Frost and fired one pitch for a lineout to third to get the Cats out of a bases loaded jam. Coon struck out seven of the first 10 batters he faced, building momentum in the Cougars dugout as BYU extended its lead with a three-run homer in the third. &nbsp; Trailing 7-0, Bishop punched a two-out single through the left side, bringing Evasco to the plate. The true freshman belted his eighth collegiate no-doubter 410-feet to centerfield to bridge the gap to five. Robinson immediately answered with a leadoff solo shot to stretch the Cougars' lead. After a scoreless fifth, the Wildcats broke through with four runs to pull the score within two, 8-6. Reliever Brett Hansen walked four straight batters to start off the sixth, forcing BYU to make its third pitching change. ⚾ K-State drops series opener in Provo

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered to extend his hitting streak to 22 games and had three RBIs, Seth Lugo pitched solid six innings and the Kansas City Royals earned a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays with an 8-2 victory on Thursday.

Vinnie Pasquantino had a single, a double and two RBIs for the Royals, who have won nine of their past 10.

Mikael Garcia hit a line-drive double to center field for the Royals, stole third base and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Massey to tie it 1-1 in the fourth.

Lugo (3-3) gave up two runs and five hits with five strikeouts. Daniel Lynch IV, Angel Zerpa and Chris Stratton each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Royals.

Shane Baz (3-1) gave up seven runs and nine hits with three walks over 5 2/3 innings and had his ERA increase from 2.45 to 3.86.

Yandy Díaz hit a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MLB/status/1917993889257898444">solo homer</a>&nbsp;in the first for the Rays. Jonathan Aranda added an RBI single in the sixth.

Salvador Perez (hip soreness) left the game in the seventh inning. The 34-year-old catcher was in the lineup at designated hitter, replaced behind the plate by Freddie Fermin. Perez hit an RBI double in the fifth and Fermin had a double, a single and scored twice.

⚾ Bobby Witt Jr. homers as Royals earn 3-game sweep over Rays

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the Krol brothers, baseball has never just been a game. It has been the family language, the setting of their childhood, and the legacy of a father who spent three decades molding high school athletes and four state championship teams.

On Friday, that legacy will echo louder than ever across Hobart-Detter Field, where Mace, Noah and Adam Krol will each lead their respective high school teams in a unique three-team baseball triangular, probably the first-ever of it's kind in state history.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (10-9), coached by Mace, the youngest of the three, will host Andale/Garden Plain (10-8), coached by Adam, the oldest, and Haven (14-6), led by middle brother Noah. 

The event begins with Hutchinson vs. Andale/Garden Plain at 2 p.m., continues with Andale/Garden Plain vs. Haven at 4 p.m., and concludes with Hutchinson vs. Haven at 6 p.m. 

All three games will be video streamed on Hutch Post.

The game fell in place after the KSHSAA voted to allow up to 26 games on the schedule, meaning more teams playing teams they may have not ever played in a 20-game schedule.

“It just kind of came together,” Noah said. “We were already playing Andale. I don’t know if it was Mace’s idea or Adam’s, but someone said, ‘Why don’t we all just play each other?’ It made too much sense not to do it.”

Mace puts it more simply: “I think they were already scheduled, and I just kind of snuck my way in.”

The roots of the Krol coaching tree stretch deep into central Kansas soil. Their father, the late <a href="https://www.elliottmortuary.com/obituary/richard-krol">Rich Krol</a>, was one of the most accomplished and respected prep baseball coaches in Kansas history. In 30 years at Nickerson High School, Rich led the Panthers to four state titles (1989, 1990, 1993, 2002) and was posthumously inducted into the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2022.

His influence extended far beyond the dugout.

He taught metal shop and psychology, coached football, girls basketball, boys basketball and baseball.

 “But it was the relationships he built with players that always stood out," Adam said. "That’s what we try to do now, connect with the kids and build a team identity.”

The boys grew up immersed in that world. Summers were spent as bat boys, shagging fly balls and absorbing the game from the dugout. Their childhood memories were filled with evenings at Hobart-Detter, where their dad coached the Hutch Colts, and early mornings helping prep the field for weekend tournaments.

“I remember mowing the field at 2 a.m. with Tommy Garcia just to get the field ready for a tournament the next day,” Adam said. “We were always around the ballpark.”

For Noah, the memories are a sensory experience. “I remember walking through the front gate and smelling pipe tobacco from the old American Legion guys. John Fogerty’s ‘Centerfield’ playing over the loudspeakers, it’s just ingrained in your head.”

Each brother eventually pursued his own playing career: Adam played at Barton Community College, Noah played at HutchCC and Wichita State before a five-year stint in the Tigers and Pirates minor league systems, and Mace played at HutchCC, Nicholls State and Fort Hays State.

But no matter where they went, baseball always brought them back home.

The three brothers each now lead programs shaped by the foundation their father laid. Adam coached Hutch High for six seasons before leaving Kansas for a coaching position in Republic, Missouri. He returned this season to take over Andale/Garden Plain, motivated by a desire to be closer to family.

“We were missing birthdays, Easters, Sunday dinners, just all the things that make us who we are,” Adam said. “We needed to be back where we belong.”

Noah is in his third season at Haven, following a successful run as a player.

 Mace, now in his third season as the head coach at Hutch High, teaches physical education and has taken on the challenge of leading the same program his brother once helmed.

Despite their coaching differences, they all share the same feeling about how this season has gone so far.

“If I were to guess for all three of us, I’d say we all think we should be better than we are,” Noah said.

“I’d concur,” added Mace. “We’ve underperformed. Friday is a chance to right some wrongs.”

One person who won’t miss a pitch Friday is their mother, Diana Krol, who has attended thousands of games and remains one of the most vocal fans you'll hear.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a game and not heard my mom yelling, usually at the umpires," Mace said. 

“And it’s not just the umpires," Noah said. "She yells at me, Adam, Mace, the players and anyone. Everyone’s fair game.”

“She’s well-known around the state,” Adam added. “She won’t know what to do with herself, watching all three of her sons at once.”

While their mother’s voice will surely be heard, one thing from their father’s coaching days will largely remain in the past: the “Texas Mau Mau” pig Latin-style signal system he famously used at Nickerson.

“That was a Nickerson thing,” Noah said. “I don’t use it. One of my assistants tries to now and then, but I think it should stay there.”

“There might be a moment Friday where I yell something in Mau Mau just to mess with my brothers,” Adam joked.

Mace, who has Jim Walker on staff, said the code occasionally makes its way into conversations. “Coach Walker throws it out all the time, but I haven’t taught the players. Sometimes I’m glad they don’t understand what he’s saying.”

When the first pitch is thrown Friday afternoon, nostalgia will take a backseat to competition. The Krols know what’s at stake, bragging rights among brothers.

“I’ll definitely try to beat my brothers,” Adam said. “Especially since I’m the oldest. Getting beat by either one of them wouldn’t sit well.”

For Mace, the youngest, the triangular is more than just another game.

“I’ve pretty much gotten my butt kicked by my brothers my whole life,” he said. “This would be a great chance to change that.”

Friday’s setting is fitting. Hobart-Detter Field, recently renovated with new turf and batting cages, is where so many Krol memories were born.

“I’ve played there, coached there, worked on the field,” Adam said. “To come back and coach there with both my brothers on the same day, it’s really special.”

For Noah, it’s about more than just baseball. “It’s a return to where it all started. This field is part of who we are.”

The tri will stand as a tribute, not just to the brothers, but to the father who shaped their paths, the mother who never stopped cheering, and the game that continues to bring them together.

Any youth baseball/softball player can wear their favorite jersey and receive free admission with a paid adult.

She allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks. After a scoreless first inning, KU put a run on the board in the top of the second on a leadoff solo home run from Olivia Bruno. Wichita State had a scoring opportunity in the third with two runners in scoring position but a deep flyout kept the Shockers off the board. Finally in the bottom of the fourth, Compton evened the score at 1-1 on her 11th home run of the season, a solo shot off the scoreboard in left. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/ryley-nihart/9325" rel="smarttag" rev="9325">Ryley Nihart</a></dfn>&nbsp;came in to start the top of the sixth and proceeded to walk the first two batters. She would get the next two out on a sac bunt and pop-up and then an unintentional, intentional walk of Bruno loaded the bases. Nihart would induce a grounder to short, but the ball would skip off&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/sami-hood/9312" rel="smarttag" rev="9312">Sami Hood's</a></dfn>&nbsp;glove into left, bringing in two runs to put the Jayhawks up, 3-1. Down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, the Shockers put together a two-out rally. What looked like a game-ending groundout off the bat of&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/krystin-nelson/9315" rel="smarttag" rev="9315">Krystin Nelson</a></dfn>&nbsp;turned into a game-extending throwing error on the KU shortstop. With runners on the corners, Wichita State then worked three straight walks to tie the game at 3-3, sending the game to extra innings. The Shockers were unable to bring in the winning run with the bases loaded to end the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, KU puts its leadoff hitter aboard on a leadoff single and then moved her to third on a stolen base and passed ball with no outs. Following a strikeout, Natalie Marshall laced an RBI double in the right-center gap to put the Jayhawks in front, 4-3. Two batters later, KU pushed the margin to two on a bloop RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, Wichita State left the tying runs on first and third to end the game. Up Next Wichita State travels to Memphis for the final series of the regular season, May 2-4.</div>

🥎 Shockers drop home finale to Jayhawks in extra innings

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Royals left-hander Noah Cameron took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his major league debut and Vinnie Pasquantino homered as Kansas City blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Cameron, who grew up in the Kansas City area, shut out the Rays over 6 1/3 innings until Curtis Mead ended an 0-for-16 slump with a one-out single down the left-field line. Recalled from Triple-A Omaha prior to the start, Cameron (1-0) allowed one hit and five walks while striking out three. He threw 79 pitches with 46 strikes.

Carlos Estévez stranded two in the ninth for his ninth save.

Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. wasted no time extending his hitting streak to 21 games. He singled in the first inning, then scored on Pasquantino’s fourth homer of the year. Playing in his 500th major league game, Witt also reached 1,000 total bases with his fifth-inning single that scored Cavan Biggio.

Salvador Perez, Maikel Garcia and Kyle Isbel each had two hits for the Royals, who’ve won eight of nine.

Drew Rasmussen (1-2) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings for the Rays, who’ve lost seven of their last eight at Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home.

Pasquantino launched a first-pitch fastball, Rasmussen’s 10th pitch, to right-center to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead. The Royals have outscored opponents 17-2 in the first inning this season, including 3-0 against the Rays.

A Royals pitcher hasn’t thrown a no-hitter since Bret Saberhagen on Aug. 26, 1991, a span of 5,244 games. Only Cleveland and Toronto have gone longer without one.

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;The Kansas men's golf team has been selected to its ninth-straight NCAA Regional appearance, setting a new program record. Head Coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/coaches/jamie-bermel/182" rel="smarttag" rev="182">Jamie Bermel</a></dfn>&nbsp;and the Jayhawks will travel to Washington for the Bremerton Regional as the No. 8 seed, with play scheduled from May 12&ndash;14.&nbsp; This marks the longest streak of NCAA Regional appearances in program history. Kansas previously made eight consecutive trips on three occasions: 1989&ndash;96, 1998&ndash;2005 and 2016&ndash;2024. The NCAA Tournament was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19.&nbsp; "Nine straight appearances is quite a feat," said Bermel. "I don't think about it each year, as each year is different, but it says a lot about the program both past and present. When kids come here, they want to play in the postseason, and we've had a good run of luck here. Nine straight is a lot, and we are ready to go play."&nbsp; The other teams in the regional, listed by seed, include Arizona State, Florida, Utah, South Carolina, South Florida, Colorado, Charlotte, Kansas, Colorado State, Kansas State, Elon, Coastal Carolina, Oral Roberts and Seattle. The 14-team field will tee it up at Gold Mountain Golf Club, May 12-14.&nbsp; "It's a golf course where driving is premium, and there's big evergreen trees," Bermel added. "I like the course. We've played it for Regionals when I was at Colorado State and it's a good test of golf. It's got some risk-reward holes and obviously we need to go out there and play well. We don't need to play great, but we need to play well."&nbsp; The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, held at Omni La Costa Resort &amp; Spa's Championship Course in Carlsbad, California, beginning May 23.&nbsp; Last season, Kansas placed 11th at the Rancho Santa Fe Regional with a score of 883 (+43). ⛳ KU headed to ninth straight NCAA Regional

&nbsp;MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;&ndash; For the third time in the last four seasons and the 10th time in program history, the Kansas State men's golf team earned a postseason bid as the Wildcats were selected as the No. 10 seed in the 2025 NCAA Bremerton Regional, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Committee announced Wednesday during&nbsp;Golf Central&nbsp;on GOLF Channel. K-State will compete at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington, May 12-14, against a field of 14 teams. This is the first time the Wildcats have earned a regional bid at least three times in a four-year stretch since being selected in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The top five teams at the NCAA Bremerton Regional and the top individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Championship, May 23-28, at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California.&nbsp;The Wildcats are joined by four other Big 12 teams at the Bremerton Regional in No. 1 seed Arizona State, third-seeded Utah, sixth-seeded Colorado and No. 8 seed Kansas. "It's definitely a goal of ours to be a team that is consistently in regionals, and we've gotten to the point now where we have made it three out of four years," head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/coaches/grant-robbins/2583" rel="smarttag" rev="2583">Grant Robbins</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "We've been in discussion for six years in a row now, either making a regional or being one of the first two or three teams out. We have gotten to that point consistently, and now it's time to take that next step." Checking in at No. 57 in the latest National Collegiate Golf Rankings, K-State holds a team scoring average of 288.32 to rank fifth in school history, while its five top-five finishes this season are tied for ninth. The Wildcats notched a win at the Wildcat Invitational in September, while it earned a runner-up finish at the Colleton River Collegiate in early March in addition to a pair of third-place showings to end the fall and begin the spring at the Steelwood Collegiate and Hal Williams Collegiate, respectively. The Wildcats have been led this season by a trio of seniors in&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/nicklaus-mason/12219" rel="smarttag" rev="12219">Nicklaus Mason</a></dfn>,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/kobe-valociek/12228" rel="smarttag" rev="12228">Kobe Valociek</a></dfn>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/cooper-schultz/12223" rel="smarttag" rev="12223">Cooper Schultz</a></dfn>. Mason's scoring average this season sits at 71.68 to rank eighth in school history, while Valociek is second on the team at 72.32 and Schultz is third at 72.58. A native of Shawnee, Kansas, Mason has produced two of the top-10 rounds in school history this season, including a 64 during the second round of the Steelwood Collegiate to tie for third in program history. He shot in the 60s in all three rounds of that event to total a 54-hole score of 199, which is tied for third in school history. Mason has both of K-State's individual wins this season, taking the title at the Wildcat Invitational and Steelwood Collegiate. His two career wins are tied for third in school history, while he is tied for 10th with six top-five finishes in his career. Valociek, a transfer from Virginia Tech, has four top-10 showings this season, including a season-best tie for fourth place at The Prestige. Schultz, who matched Mason's 64 during the final round of the Wildcat Invitational to help fuel a tie for second place, also has four top-10 finishes this season. K-State's last appearance in the NCAA Regional was nearly the first time the Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Championship. The Wildcats finished in sixth place &ndash; just one spot shy of qualifying &ndash; in the 2023 NCAA Bath (Mich.) Regional at 7-under par 845 and missed a playoff for the final spot by only three shots. Schultz will be playing in his third-straight NCAA Regional after competing for the Wildcats in 2023 and advancing as an individual a year ago. The Andover, Kansas, product tied for 30th place in the 2024 NCAA Austin Regional, while Valociek tied for 46th at that site as he competed as an individual in his final appearance as a Hokie.&nbsp; Mason will also be seeing action in a third postseason. He tied for 32nd and the Wildcats placed ninth in the 2022 NCAA Norman Regional. Two seasons ago in Bath, Mason tied for 43rd place.

⛳ K-State punches ticket to NCAA Tournament

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;Kansas State bolstered its offensive line unit this week by signing transfers&nbsp;JB Nelson&nbsp;(Penn State) and&nbsp;Terrence Enos Jr.&nbsp;(Pittsburgh).

Both players have one year of eligibility remaining and are the first two transfers to sign with K-State during the spring window. They join a list of 12 other NCAA Division I or II transfers who will play for the Wildcats this coming fall.

A product of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Nelson played in 31 games over three the last three season for the Nittany Lions, which included eight starts during the 2023 campaign in which he was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention pick by both the league&rsquo;s coaches and media. He saw time at both guard and tackle positions, totaling 776 offensive snaps during his time in Happy Valley and helping Penn State accumulate a 23-6 record the last two seasons. Last year, Nelson played in three College Football Playoff contests, a first-round victory over SMU, a win over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.

As a starter in 2023, Nelson helped the Nittany Lions earn a No. 28 national ranking in rushing offense (184.8), while they ranked 19th&nbsp;in fewest sacks allowed per game (1.23) and 10th&nbsp;in fewest tackle for loss per game (3.92). Penn State also ranked in the top 20 in all three categories a year ago.

Nelson began his collegiate career by starting all 10 games of his freshman season at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was the top-rated overall community-college prospect for the Class of 2022 by On3, while he ranked No. 2 by 247Sports and ESPN.

Enos Jr., who hails from Redford, Michigan, saw time in 27 games with five starts during the last three years at Pittsburgh. As a junior in 2024, Enos Jr. played in all 13 games with four starts at various positions as he earned starts at left tackle against Syracuse and SMU, left guard against Virginia and right tackle against Toledo in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. He totaled 383 total offensive snaps a year ago. In 2023, Enos Jr. saw action in nine games with a start at right tackle against Notre Dame.

Kansas State is coming off a 2024 season in which it went 9-4 and capped its season with a 17-point comeback victory over Rutgers in the Rate Bowl. The Wildcats have won at least nine games each of the last three seasons, one of only 10 Power 4 teams &ndash; and the only Big 12 program &ndash; to win at least nine games each of the last three seasons. They are also one of only five programs to accomplish that feat and claim a conference championship during that timeframe, joining Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Oregon.

Hutch High holds spring signing day 

Sterling College Athletics and Vice President of Athletics, Scott Downing, announced that women's basketball head coach K.C. Bassett has resigned to take a NCAA Div. II assistant position.&nbsp;

"K.C. has been an invaluable asset as coach of the Lady Warriors," Downing said. "After stepping into the role following Hall of Fame Coach Lonnie Kruse, she has shaped and developed a team that reflects her unique basketball style while competing for championships. Her influence extends beyond the court; she influences student-athletes in every area of their lives. Her program impacts the entire Sterling community. We are grateful for her loyalty and wish her continued success in her career.&nbsp;

Bassett finished her tenth season at the helm of the Lady Warrior's basketball program with a record of 232-114&nbsp;after taking over in 2014-15. She started her coaching career at Sterling College in 2007 under Kruse and was inducted into the Sterling College Hall of Fame herself in 2016. She has also served Sterling as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women leader starting in 2021.&nbsp;

Over the past seven seasons, she has led the Lady Warriors to three KCAC regular season championships, three KCAC conference tournament championships and six trips to the NAIA National tournament (2019-23 &amp; 2025).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bassett has also coached five NAIA All-Americans, three KCAC Players of the Year, two KCAC Freshmen of the Year and numerous all KCAC honorees.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a coach she has amassed several accolades including NAIA National Coach of the Year (2021) by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), 4-Year Women's Basketball Coach of the Year (2021) by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, three time Lonnie Kruse KCAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year (2021-23) and KCAC Champion of Character Coach of the Year (2015).&nbsp;

Her time with Sterling College women's basketball began in 2003 as she was a four-year starter for the Lady Warriors. On the team, she won two conference championships and one KCAC tournament championship. The team also made three trips to the NAIA National tournament where they finished in the Sweet Sixteen twice and the Elite Eight once.&nbsp;

"In 2003 I arrived on the campus of Sterling College, as a student-athlete, having no idea how much of an impact this school and community would have on me," Bassett said. "After 22 years, there is no adequate way to express how much my time here has meant to me."&nbsp;

Individual awards Bassett received during her time on the court include: KCAC Freshman of the Year (2003-04), KCAC Player of the Year (2006-07), KCAC All-Conference honorable mention (2003-04), KCAC All-Conference First Team (x3), NAIA All-American (third-team) and NAIA Scholar Athlete (x2). She ended her playing career as Sterling College women's basketball all-time assist leader with 549.&nbsp;

"First and foremost, thank you to legendary coach, Lonnie Kruse. I would not be where I am today without Coach believing in me and giving me the opportunity to carry on his amazing legacy," Bassett said. "Thank you to President Scott Rich, Vice President of Athletics, Scott Downing, and Director of Athletics, Justin Morris who have endlessly supported me and this program. Assistant Athletic Director, Deb Wiebe and Director of Athletic Training, Pete Manely, have been there for me from the moment I stepped onto campus, and I truly do not know where I would be without them. To all the players I have coached- you have given me so much more than I could ever give you and I am so proud of the young women you have become. Thank you to the incredible Sterling Women's Basketball fans. You have been such a blessing. Lastly, thank you to my family - you are truly the best. I will always be a Warrior for life."&nbsp;

Assistant coach Tim Hendrixson will serve in the interim until a coach is announced.&nbsp;

"The impact that K.C. has had not only on our women's basketball team but across our campus will be truly missed. It has been a blessing to see her grow as a student-athlete, to assistant coach, then as our head coach, associate athletic director and senior women's leader. We wish her all the best and we are excited to see her excel in her next chapter," Athletic Director Justin Morris said. &nbsp;
