Saturday's 42-17 victory over Garden City had a very positive effect for the Hutchinson Community College football team in Monday's release of the NJCAA Division I Rankings.

The 9-1 Blue Dragons are now in sole possession of second place in the latest rankings. Last week, Hutchinson and Georgia Military were tied for second with 135 poll points each.

The new poll had the Blue Dragons firmly in second place with 138 points. Hutchinson earned two first-place votes this week. Georgia Military (10-1), which completed its regular season last week, is third with 129 points and Mississippi champion Northwest Mississippi is fourth. Iowa Western remained in the top spot after a narrow 21-14 win on Saturday at Highland.

The top four teams in the national rankings receive bids to play in the NJCAA National Playoffs, with the top two teams in the poll earning home games.

There is one week left in the regular season and just two games are on the schedule … Coffeyville played at Butler in a weather-make-up game in El Dorado. Then, No. 6 Navarro plays at No. 7 Tyler in the SWJCFC Championship game.

Now ranked in 46-straight polls, the current run of consecutive appearances is the longest in program history. The previous longest run was 45 set from 2010 to 2013.

The Dragons have been ranked the nation's Top 3 for 42 consecutive polls.

With six-straight victories to open the 2024-25 season, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team claimed the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA Division I Rankings for the second-straight regular-season poll.

The Blue Dragons defeated the Kansas Wesleyan JV (85-54) and Redlands (81-59) in the Barton Classic this weekend to bump their record to 6-0, extending their winning streak to 43 games.

This week the Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play with a pair of road tests at Barton (4-2) and Fort Hays Tech Northwest (0-4), formerly known as Northwest Kansas Tech at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday in Goodland.

The Top 11 teams from last week all won last weeks and stayed exactly the save. No. 12 Cochise was the highest-ranked women's team to lose last week and fell to No. 16.

The Top 5 remains Hutchinson, Northwest Tech, New Mexico Junior College, Wabash Valley and Gulf Coast State.

The KJCCC is well represented this week. Dodge City remains No. 9 and Butler jumps into the rankings at No. 24.

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked No. 1 in seven consecutive polls dating back to last season. They have appeared in 17 consecutive rankings dating back to the first regular-season poll of the 2023-24 season.

🏀 HutchCC women remain No. 1 in nation

Five members of the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned post-season recognition as members of the 2024 All-KJCCC Division I/All-Region 6 Volleyball teams.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/murphy_mckenzie_tghh">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/proctor_atlyn_7f6g">Atlyn Proctor</a>&nbsp;were named to the all-KJCCC/Region 6 second team. Freshmen Addy Foster and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/simmons_tiana_pzqy">Tiana Simmons</a>&nbsp;and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/wilson_shelbi_f4d1">Shelbi Wilson</a>&nbsp;were honorable mention selections.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/murphy_mckenzie_tghh">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;– 2nd Team Murphy, a sophomore middle blocker from Fort Scott, was Hutchinson's leading blocker in 2024 with 1.06 blocks per set. She averaged 1.22 blocks per set against KJCCC competition this season.

Her 152 blocks this season ranked 15th in team single-season history. Murphy's 297 career blocks rank sixth in program history.

Offensively, Murphy hit .247 and averaged 1.24 kills per set. She had a season-high nine kills against both Cloud County and Seward County. She posted season highs of eight blocks against Neosho County and Pratt.

Murphy is a two-year all-KJCCC selection. She was honorable mention all-conference as a freshman in 2023.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/proctor_atlyn_7f6g">Atlyn Proctor</a>&nbsp;– 2nd Team A freshman outside hitter from Nelson, British Columbia, Canada was the Blue Dragons' leading hitter this season. Proctor averaged 2.96 kills per set on 1.85 hitting. Proctor also averaged 0.74 dogs and 0.39 blocks per set.

Proctor reached double figures in kills 21 times, breaking the 20-kill mark three. She had 22 kills on .288 hitting against Vincennes University at the Cardinal Classic in Park Hills, Missouri. She had 21 kills on a season-high .459 attack percentage against Pratt. Proctor also tallied 21 kills on .457 hitting against Butler.

Proctor posted five double-doubles this season, getting a season-high 18 digs against the Friends JV.

Addy Foster – Honorable Mention Foster, a freshman libero from Derby, set a Blue Dragon freshman record for digs and ended up No. 2 on Hutchinson's single-season digs list.

Foster racked up 664 total digs this season, averaging 4.54 digs per set. Those 664 digs were second on the single-season list to Mariana Blum's 731 in 2004. Foster's 4.54 digs-per-set average ranked sixth overall and third on the freshman list.

Foster had double figures in digs in 36 or 40 matches this season. She had eight matches surpassing 20 digs, including a season-high 28 digs against Vincennes University on October 11. Foster had 25 digs in a five-setter against Dodge City on October 9 and 25 digs in a four-set win over McCook on September 20.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/simmons_tiana_pzqy">Tiana Simmons</a>&nbsp;– Honorable Mention The redshirt freshman right-side hitter from Stillwell, Kansas, averaged 2.56 kills on 2.08 hitting this season. She also averaged 1.64 digs and 0.57 blocks.

Simmons had a season-high 18 kills twice – the first vs. McCook when she hit .318 for the match and added 16 digs. The second was against the McPherson JV. Simmons had double figures in kills in 14 of 36 matches played.

Simmons had three double-doubles this season.

Wilson also averaged 19.2 digs and had 37 service aces this season.

Wilson had a season-high 45 assists in a four-set match vs. Butler on October 23. She had 40 assists in a five-set battle with Vincennes.

Posting a season-high 12 digs vs. Dodge City on October 9, Wilson had three double-doubles this season.

🏐 Blue Dragons place 5 on All-KJCCC teams

No. 19 TCU entered The Associated Press&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">Top 25 women’s basketball poll</a>&nbsp;with its best ranking in 16 years Monday while the first 12 teams, led by No. 1 South Carolina, were unchanged.

The Horned Frogs joined the rankings after topping&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nc-state-tcu-score-04a1cfd577525de1c5fb6865868d8b52">then-No. 13 N.C. State</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. It was the team’s first ranked win since 2021 and victory over a top 15 opponent in six seasons. TCU has its best spot in the poll since the school was also 19th in 2008.

“It means a lot as we build this program,” TCU coach Mark Campbell said of getting ranked. “We’ve come a long way. I inherited a program that was 1-17 (in the conference) and at rock bottom. Last year’s group laid an incredible foundation to springboard into this season.”

The Gamecocks remained the unanimous No. 1 team, receiving all 31 first-place votes from a national media panel. They routed their two opponents last week by an average of 36.5 points. South Carolina visits No. 5 UCLA on Sunday.

No. 2 UConn, No. 3 USC and No. 4 Texas followed South Carolina. No. 6 Notre Dame heads west to play the Trojans in a top-10 clash on Saturday. LSU, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Kansas State round out the first 10.

Stanford fell out of the rankings after losing at Indiana on Sunday.

West Virginia moved up to No. 13 for its highest ranking since 2018 when the Mountaineers were 12th. After a win over Texas A&amp;M, the Mountaineers have won 32 straight nonconference home games dating to the 2018-19 season. They could potentially face Texas in the Gulf Coast Showcase over Thanksgiving weekend.

N.C. State has had a challenging start to its season, playing both No. 1 South Carolina and TCU on the road. The Wolfpack, who reached the Final Four last season, fell to No. 20 in the poll after the loss to the Horned Frogs. Coach Wes Moore’s squad could face LSU in the Bahamas during Thanksgiving week.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma will have his first chance to become the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/uconn-geno-auriemma-wins-record-260e62cbae1151ac3bf2649522463e78">all-time wins leader</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday when the Huskies host Fairleigh Dickinson. UConn is bringing back many of its alumni for the game. Auriemma has 1,216 victories in his Hall of Fame career and is tied with retired Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer.

All eyes are on Los Angeles this weekend: No. 6 Notre Dame at No. 3 USC on Saturday and No. 1 South Carolina at No. 5 UCLA on Sunday. All four teams have looked solid in their wins so far, combining to go 16-0.

🏀 K-State women stay put at No. 10 in AP poll

Kansas strengthened its grip on No. 1 in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>.

The rest of the top 10 turned into a jumble of teams swapping places.

The Jayhawks picked up five first-place votes in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released on Monday, receiving 49 from a 61-person media panel. No. 2 UConn had seven first-place votes, No. 3 Gonzaga earned two and No. 4 Auburn three. Iowa State climbed two spots to round out the top five.

The shuffling started with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alabama-purdue-basketball-score-4077039f0dd95c5abe6ed8772210da45">No. 8 Alabama’s 87-78</a>&nbsp;loss to No. 6 Purdue, a game that dropped the Crimson Tide six spots and bumped the Boilermakers up seven. Losses by Duke and Arizona shook up the top 10 further.

The No. 12 Blue Devils dropped six spots from last week after their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-duke-score-1cd6da897073c93c3a0c3dae0ece1ca2">77-72 loss</a>&nbsp;to No. 9 Kentucky. Chargers beat Bengals 34-27 on Dobbins' late TD after squandering 21-point lead

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — J.K. Dobbins rushed for a 29-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining, and the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 after squandering a 21-point third-quarter lead. Justin Herbert passed for 297 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 65 yards as the Chargers won their fourth straight. Dobbins ran for two TDs. Joe Burrow passed for 356 yards and three touchdowns, but the Bengals suffered another excruciating loss. They have five defeats by seven points or fewer. After its offense stalled for most of the second half, Los Angeles went 84 yards on four plays in 26 seconds on the decisive drive.

Boswell kicks 6 field goals and the Steelers bottle up Lamar Jackson in 18-16 win over the Ravens

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chris Boswell tied a franchise record with six field goals and the Pittsburgh Steelers limited Lamar Jackson and the NFL's top-ranked offense in an 18-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers (8-2) won their fifth straight behind Boswell and a defense that never let Jackson, Derrick Henry or the rest of the offense get into a rhythm, opening up a little breathing room atop the AFC North. The Ravens were held to season lows in points and yards and while turning it over three times to fall to 7-4.

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff brings touchdowns and Jewish teachings to predominantly Mormon school

PROVO, Utah (AP) — This year's successful 9-1 football season for Brigham Young University, the Utah private school run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has an unexpected player at the helm: its first Jewish quarterback. Jake Retzlaff, a junior college transfer, has earned a hero's embrace by rabbis and others in the tiny but tight-knit Jewish community in Provo while also becoming a favorite of the large fan base that lovingly calls him the "BYJew." The starting quarterback has used his newfound stardom to shine a spotlight on his own faith at a school where 98.5% of students are members of the faith known widely as the Mormon church.

Beyoncé will perform at halftime of Ravens-Texans Christmas Day game on Netflix

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Beyoncé is coming to your home on Christmas — provided you have Netflix and are tuning in to the Ravens-Texans game. Netflix announced late Sunday that the megastar would perform during halftime of a Christmas Day matchup in her hometown of Houston. The streaming service didn't reveal details about the performance but teased that it would likely feature guest appearances from her "Cowboy Carter" album, which delivered Beyoncé a leading 11 Grammy nominations earlier this month. Netflix is also streaming a Christmas day Kansas City Chiefs game, setting up the possibility that another of the world's biggest stars, Taylor Swift, would be on the stream. Swift is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Raiders' Brock Bowers and other NFL players celebrate TDs with Trump-inspired dance moves

The Trump dance is becoming a trend around the NFL. Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley and Lions defensive end Za'Darius Smith followed Nick Bosa's lead on Sunday and celebrated big plays with dance moves inspired by President-elect Donald Trump. Bowers had 13 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown for Las Vegas in a 34-19 loss at Miami on Sunday. Cavaliers to put perfect start on line against champion Celtics in juicy matchup, playoff rematch

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers will put their perfect start on the line in the perfect place. Unbeaten through 15 games after defeating Charlotte 128-114 on Sunday, Cleveland will try to become just the second team to go 16-0 on Tuesday when it visits the defending champion Celtics, who bounced the Cavs from the playoffs last season. It's both a rematch and a chance for the Cavs to see how they stack up against the NBA's best. Despite resting All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell against the Hornets, the Cavs followed a familiar formula in joining the Golden State Warriors (2015-16), Houston Rockets (1993-94) and Washington Capitols (1948-49) as the only teams to open 15-0.

James Harden breaks tie with Ray Allen, moves to No. 2 on NBA's career 3-point list

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — James Harden now stands alone at No. 2 in 3-pointers. Harden, the Los Angeles Clippers guard, connected on the 2,974th 3-pointer of his career on Sunday night and broke a tie with Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen for the No. 2 spot on the NBA's list. Harden's history-making shot came from the right wing with 6:09 left in the first quarter in a 116-105 victory over the Utah Jazz. The only player ahead of Harden on the list is Golden State's Stephen Curry at 3,782. Harden was 2 of 8 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Backup QB Arbuckle leads Toronto past Winnipeg 41-24 for the Argonauts' 19th Grey Cup title

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Backup quarterback Nick Arbuckle led the Toronto Argonauts to their record-extending 19th Grey Cup title, throwing two second-half touchdown passes in a 41-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday night at B.C. Place. Forced into action after starter Chad Kelly broke his ankle in Toronto's East championship victory over Montreal, Arbuckle completed 26 of 37 passes for 252 yards in Toronto's second Grey Cup victory over Winnipeg in three seasons. Toronto has won its last eight appearances in the Grey Cup dating to 1991 and is 8-0 against Winnipeg. Winnipeg was appearing in its fifth straight Grey Cup. It won consecutive titles in 2019 and 2021, with the 2000 season canceled.

Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs were the NFL's last undefeated team and finally ran out ways to eke out one-score victories and overcome second-half deficits. The Chiefs had won 15 straight, including playoffs, since they fell 20-14 to the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 17, 2023.

The Bills have won six straight and moved closer to their sixth straight AFC East title.

Buffalo has defeated the Chiefs in four straight regular-season meetings, though Kansas City holds the postseason edge, having won the past three matchups dating to 2020. And it wouldn't be a surprise if the teams met again in January.

The packed stadium erupted in chants of “MVP!” as the videoboard showed replays of Allen’s touchdown. Bills coach Sean McDermott opted to go for it on fourth-and-2 instead of kicking a field goal for a five-point lead. Allen faked a pass to his left and then broke up the middle, where he bounced off two Chiefs defenders before crossing the goal line.

Allen played through a sore throwing hand, which was examined on the sideline during the game. He finished 27 of 40 for 262 yards with the TDs passing and rushing and an interception.

The rushing touchdown was the 58th of Allen’s career, moving him into second on the Bills list, one ahead of O.J. Simpson, and seven behind Thurman Thomas. Allen’s two-touchdown outing also increased his total to 244, tying Jim Kelly for first in team history.

Buffalo’s defense ended Kansas City's desperate final drive linebacker Terrel Bernard intercepted Mahomes.

Mahomes finished 23 of 33 for 196 yards with three touchdown passes -- two to tight end Noah Gray and another to Xavier Worthy — and two interceptions.

After trading leads five times in their last meeting — Kansas City’s 27-24 win in the divisional playoff round in January — the teams traded leads four times in the first half. Cook scored twice before halftime and Buffalo took a 16-14 lead into the break, one it never relinquished, after Tyler Bass closed the second quarter by hitting a 33-yard field goal.

A highly anticipated showdown between two of the NFL’s top quarterbacks turned into a battle of defenses through three quarters with the teams exchanging seven punts in calm and mild conditions, with temperatures in the high 40s and minimal wind.

The Bills went ahead 23-14 a little over two minutes into the fourth quarter when Allen capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive with a short pass to Samuel, who sidestepped a defender and raced into the end zone.

Mahomes responded by marching the Chiefs on a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard TD catch by Gray with 7:53 left.

The Chiefs had shown resolve in winning their first nine games by a combined 58 points, with four decided on the final play. That included a 16-14 win over Denver last week in which Leo Chenal blocked Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

🏈 Buffalo hands Kansas City first loss of the season

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw for 169 yards, Dylan Neal ran for two touchdowns and Kansas upset No. 7 BYU 17-13 on Saturday night to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.

The Jayhawks (4-6, 3-4 Big 12) beat ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks for the first time in school history and improved to 3-0 against the Cougars. Neal surpassed 4,000 yards rushing in his career, finishing with 52 yards on the ground.

The victory over BYU kept alive hopes of Kansas qualifying for a bowl game for a third consecutive season following a 1-5 start.

“I feel like our team has always done a great job being able to stay the course,” Daniels said. “I feel like a big staple within our program is being able to trust the process.”

Jake Retzlaff threw for 192 yards for BYU (9-1, 6-1, No. 6 College Football Playoffs). LJ Martin ran for 76 yards for the Cougars, who were held to a field goal in the second half.

BYU totaled 354 yards but went just 2 of 4 in the red zone and came away with no touchdowns on all four drives inside the 20.

“They had a really good game plan,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. “Looking at the stats, we just didn’t make enough plays and (made) way too many mistakes to come out with the victory. “

Trailing 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, Kansas went ahead on Neal’s 3-yard run.

Daniels quick-kicked on fourth-and-14 when the drive stalled at BYU’s 36. His kick deflected off Evan Johnson’s helmet and when Jakob Robinson dove to secure it, the ball squirted out of his arms. Quentin Skinner pounced on the loose ball at the 3 to set up the go-ahead score.

“We found a way this time,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said.

BYU drove to the Kansas 15 with two minutes left. The Cougars stalled on offense coming out of the two-minute timeout. They gained four total yards on three straight runs and a false start penalty backed them up to the 16. BYU turned it over on downs with 46 seconds left when Chase Roberts was tackled 3 yards short of a first down.

“We had all the confidence in the world in our defense to be able to go out there and make a stop,” Daniels said.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the first half. Kansas took a 7-0 lead on its opening drive following Neal’s 7-yard burst up the middle. BYU went ahead 10-7 in the second quarter on a 30-yard strike along the sideline from Retzlaff to Hinckley Ropati.

The Cougars had a chance at another go-ahead score before halftime when they drove 70 yards over a minute down to Kansas 5. Mello Dotson intercepted Retzlaff in the end zone on a fade route to keep BYU from putting another touchdown on the board.

“We can’t score in the red zone,” Roberts said. “I feel like we struggled a little bit in practice this week in the red zone, and it carries over. You got to lock in. You got to be prepared when you come out and play a good team like Kansas.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks took care of the ball and made smart decisions against an opportunistic BYU defense that ultimately forced only one turnover.

BYU: A turnover prevented a potential go-ahead score before halftime. A second one led to a late Kansas lead.

BYU opened the third quarter with a 17-play drive that covered 66 yards and took 10:26 off the clock. The drive culminated in a 35-yard field goal from Will Ferrin that ended up being the Cougars' only second-half points.

“It didn’t seem like it was going to ever end,” Leipold said. “That might be one of the longest drives I’ve seen in my career. 17 plays. But to hold them to that field goal was huge.”

BYU will likely drop out of the Top 10 following its first loss.

The Blue Dragons finish the regular season with a 9-1 record, going 5-1 in Jayhawk Conference play. The win also guarantees Hutchinson a spot in the NJCAA national semifinals, which will be played on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Hutchinson went into Saturday tied for second in the country with Georgia Military College, both teams receiving 150 points in the latest poll.

The top four teams in the final poll, which will be released next weekend, qualify for the national semifinals. The top two seeds will host the semifinal, with No. 1 hosting No. 4 and No. 2 hosting No. 3.

Waymond Jordan Jr. secured his eighth 100-plus yard rushing game of the season, going for 132 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Samari Collier threw for 116 yards and three scores.&nbsp;

Tre Brown hauled in three catches for 50 yards and two touchdowns to lead he receivers. Ben Prosper also hauled in a touchdown from 17 yards out.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 15 Hutchinson (4-2) built a 16-point lead just 51 seconds into the second half before NOC-Enid (5-2) went on a run.

The Dragons jumped out to a 38-24 lead on the Jets at halftime behind 14 Isaiah Jackson points.

Jackson finished with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting, but the Dragons had trouble finding the distance from deep.
