HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team hit a conference season-high .344 on Friday night to complete a match and season sweep of the Seward County Saints at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Spurred on by an 11-1 run to close the opening set, the Blue Dragons went on for a 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the Saints.

The Blue Dragons got back to .500 at 18-18 and are now tied for fifth at 6-7 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson closes out its regular-season home schedule with a 6 p.m. home match on Saturday against Pratt at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons will celebrate Sophomore Night activities before the game.

With the first set tied at 14-all, the Blue Dragons went on a 10-1 scoring run to close out the set and set the tone for the match.

Freshman Atlyn Proctor hit .421 and had a team-high 10 kills on 19 attacks.

Freshman Tiana Simmons had nine kills and hit .200. Simmons added 11 digs and five blocks.

Sophomore McKenzie Murphy hit a season-high 632 on nine kills, no errors and 13 assists.

Sophomore Precious Johnson finished with seven kills on .357 hitting. Johnson had five block assists.

Freshman Kierny Follmer had six kills on .300 hitting.

The Blue Dragons out-hit the Saints .344-.139. The Dragons out-blocked the Saints 10-4, out-dug the Saints 45-33 and had eight service aces to Seward’s four.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson finished with 41 assists, three digs and two ace serves.

Freshman libero Addy Foster had a match-high 17 digs. Freshman libero Beatriz Carvalho had a match-high five service aces and four digs.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — According to a release from the Garden City Community College athletic department, their football program is now 0-7 after finding out that the academic records of a student-athlete were not provided to the institution accurately.

"First and foremost, we completed a thorough eligibility check on the student-athlete in question prior to the start of the season," said GCCC Athletic Director Mike Pilosof. "All processes and procedures were followed to the letter of the law by the standards set forth by the NJCAA. However, it was discovered that information was not disclosed to Garden City Community College. Once we were made aware of the situation, our athletic department immediately contacted the national office."

The NJCAA has ruled that the Broncbusters must vacate wins over Dodge City, Coffeyville, Ellsworth, Community Christian, Independence and Butler.&nbsp;

The Broncbusters continue their season Saturday as they host Iowa Western. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Like the preseason Associated Press poll, Kansas men's basketball has been voted No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, released Oct. 23.

Kansas received 15 of a possible 32 first-place votes by the coaches and amassed 743 poll votes. Alabama received six first-place votes and was second with 718 points. UConn also had six first-place votes and is third. Houston, with four first-place votes, was fourth with No. 5 Duke, No. 6 Iowa State, No. 7 Gonzaga, No. 8 Baylor, No. 9 Arizona and No. 10 North Carolina rounding out the top 10.

This is the second-straight season and the fifth time in the coaches' poll that Kansas is No. 1 in the preseason poll with four in the Self era - 1996-97, 2004-05, 2009-10, 2018-19, 2023-24 and 2024-25.

The No. 1 ranking marked the 11th-straight year Kansas has entered the season No. 5 or higher in the coaches' poll dating back to 2014-15. Additionally, it is the 19th time in the Self era the Jayhawks have been preseason seventh or higher, including each of the last 13 seasons.

Kansas will play 10 games against teams ranked in the preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll Top 25. KU will play against No. 4 Houston (twice), No. 5 Duke, No. 6 Iowa State (twice), No. 8 Baylor, No. 9 Arizona, No. 10 North Carolina, No. 14 Creighton and No. 20 Cincinnati.

The Hutchinson Community College football team take on its fifth nationally ranked opponent of the 2024 season on Saturday as the Blue Dragons return to Gowans Stadium from a two-game road trip.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (7-0, 3-0 KJCCC) plays host to No. 13 Butler (3-3, 2-1) at Noon Saturday at Gowans Stadium for 2024 Fall Homecoming and the opening of a two-game homestand.

Hutchinson's Drew Dallas will become the sixth head coach in Blue Dragon Football history to coach 50 games. Dallas has amassed a 45-4 overall record in his fifth season with the Blue Dragons.

Dallas will tie Dave Wheeler (1999-2004) for the fifth-most games coached in team history on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons look to keep pace in the Jayhawk Conference with No. 5 Garden City. The Broncbusters are 4-0 in conference play and 6-1 overall. Garden City plays Iowa Western on Saturday in Garden City.

Hutchinson extended its Jayhawk Conference winning streak to 22 games with a 40-17 road victory at No. 12 Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragon defense forced five takeaways, including two interceptions from freshman defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/collier_kollin_in9z">Kollin Collier</a>. Back-up quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/johnson_christian_xik2">Christian Johnson</a>&nbsp;completed 13 of 20 passes for a season-high 228 yards and a touchdown and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/jordan_jr._waymond_h58l">Waymond Jordan Jr.</a>&nbsp;had his fifth 100-yard rushing game with 116 yards and three touchdowns to extend Hutchinson's road win streak to 18 games.

Butler suffered a 21-10 home loss to No. 5 Garden City last weekend in El Dorado.

The Grizzlies were out-gained 395-217 and were held to nine first downs by the Broncbusters. Running back Markellus Bass rushed for 103 yards and 13 carries to pace the Grizzly offense. Garden City led Butler 14-10 at halftime and scored the only points of the second half with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Saturday's meeting is the 101st all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Butler. The Dragons lead the overall series 50-49-1 with wins in the last three meetings, including a 43-16 victory last season at BG Products Stadium in El Dorado.

Saturday's game features the Nos. 1 and 3 scoring offenses in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons rank first at 48.9 points per game, while the Grizzlies are third at 28.3 points per game. The Grizzlies are No. 3 in scoring defense at 14.4 points per game. The Blue Dragons are fourth in scoring defense at 17.4 points per game allowed.

The Blue Dragons are off next Saturday and will play Highland on No. 9.

Ohtani and Judge are the likely MVPs this year, marking the first Series to feature both since in 2012. This will be the first Series with a pair of 50-home run hitters in Judge and Ohtani. With Kupp and Nacua back from injury, Stafford throws 4 TD passes in Rams' 30-20 win over Vikings

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Demarcus Robinson caught two of Matthew Stafford's four touchdown throws in the Los Angeles Rams' 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Cooper Kupp caught a TD pass and Puka Nacua had 106 yards receiving in their returns from injury absences. Stafford passed for 279 yards for the Rams, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season with an offense that looked exponentially more dangerous with its top two receivers back in uniform. Sam Darnold passed for 240 yards for the Vikings, who followed up their first loss of the season with an ineffective defensive performance.

Darnold, O'Connell not blaming missed face mask call as reason why Vikings lost to Rams

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Minnesota quarterback Sam Darnold didn't blame the officials for a missed face mask call when he was sacked for a safety late in the fourth quarter of the Vikings' 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Instead, Darnold lamented the situation that pinned Minnesota deep in the first place. On second-and-10, Darnold got a couple clean seconds in the pocket before Byron Young barreled past left guard Blake Brandel and took down Darnold for a safety, to put the game out of reach. Referee Tra Blake said in a pool report that he and umpire Carl Paganelli did not have a clear view.

Sean McVay shuts down Cooper Kupp trade speculation after star WR returns for Rams' win over Vikings

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay expects star receiver Cooper Kupp to stay right where he is. McVay criticized media speculation about the possibility of the Rams trading Kupp after the Super Bowl 56 MVP returned from injury in Los Angeles' 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Kupp had been blanketed by trade rumors this week as he neared a return from a four-game injury absence. The 2021 AP Offensive Player of the Year had five catches for 51 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings in the second victory in five days for the Rams.

USF men's basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim dies at 43

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — South Florida coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, who led the Bulls to the American Athletic Conference's regular-season championship a year ago, has died. He was 43. The school announced his death Thursday, saying he died from complications that presented while he was undergoing a procedure at a Tampa-area hospital. Abdur-Rahim was a rising star in the coaching world. He got the USF job after leading Kennesaw State to the NCAA Tournament in 2023. He was an immediate success with the Bulls, going 25-8 and winning a game in the NIT. Abdur-Rahim was a brother of G League president and former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

NBA opens investigation into Joel Embiid's playing status after 76ers star misses season opener

The NBA is now investigating why Philadelphia center Joel Embiid did not play in the team's nationally televised season-opener against Milwaukee. The league confirmed the probe on Thursday. It was opened as part of the NBA's player participation policy that went into effect last season. Such a move was to be expected: The NBA has said that any time a star player misses a game an investigation can be opened to "promote compliance" with league rules and can include "independent medical review and related determinations regarding player availability."

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Inter Miami's Lionel Messi played in only one Major League Soccer loss in 2024. It was at home against Atlanta United. Messi makes his MLS Cup playoff debut Friday night, and it's at home against Atlanta United. Inter Miami, which set the MLS records for most points and best winning percentage in the regular season, gets a big challenge right out of the gate in the playoffs by facing Atlanta in a best-of-three Eastern Conference first-round series. Messi is coming off a hat trick in the regular-season finale, a 6-2 romp past New England.

Shohei Ohtani won't pitch in the World Series, but that's not slowing Ohtanimania

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The race was on to reach Shohei Ohtani first. The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar waited calmly as a horde of media rushed toward him on the eve of his first World Series. He didn't flinch at the wall of cameras and microphones shoved toward him to capture his every thought. Some of Ohtani's teammates laughed as they watched the chaotic scene. Ohtani patiently answered questions about his excitement at making the World Series after six losing seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, how his dog Decoy will likely be at the games and traded compliments with Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.

NEWTON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College sophomore Charlie Box took Mother Nature’s best shot Thursday and built a seven-stroke lead after 36 holes of the NJCAA National Preview at Sand Creek Station.

Playing in gusty 25-30 mph wins, Box powered the Blue Dragons to a 13-stroke lead after two rounds on Thursday on the same course that will play host to the 2025 NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships next May.

The Blue Dragons posted a 36-hole total of 12-over 588. Hutchinson had rounds of 292 and 296 on Thursday. The Dragons lead No. 8-ranked McLennan, which shot a 25-over 601 (295-301).

Jayhawk Conference teams own 3 of the top 4 spots in the team standings. Dodge City is third after two round at 28-over 604 (293-311) and Garden City is fourth at 30-over 606 (301-305).

Hutchinson, McLennan, Dodge City and Garden City will be paired together in Tuesday’s final round, which is an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Also in the 15-team field is No. 3 Odessa, No. 4 Indian Hills, No. 5 New Mexico Junior College, No. 7 Western Texas and No. 10 Weatherford.

Box was the only player to shoot two rounds under par in the windy conditions. The Blue Dragon sophomore had five birdies and two bogeys in the opening round, including a birdie on the final hole of the round to post a 69. Box had seven birdies, a bogey and one double bogey in his second-round 68.

Teammate Jaydon Carruthers is in second place after griding out a pair of even-par 72s on Thursday. The Blue Dragon freshman had three birdies and three bogeys in the first round and had four birds, two bogeys and a double-bogey in the afternoon round.

Sophomore Louis Ross is tied for 17th  at nine-over 153. Ross posted rounds of 75 and 78 on Thursday.

Sophomore David Razinskas is tied for 21st with a 36-hole total of 154. Razinskas had rounds of 76 and 78.

Freshman Jack Northgraves had rounds of 77 and 82 for a 159, which is tied for 42nd.

The Blue Dragons had two individual players in the field of 80 players.

Freshman Tyler Walker is tied for 29th at 156 (76-80). Cal Schultz is tied for 55th at 163 (83-80).

⛳ Box with large lead in Newton

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs announced&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-deandre-hopkins-titans-trade-6de56c6dd565995135fd7de120182c9c">their trade for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins</a>&nbsp;on Thursday, sending the Tennessee Titans a conditional fifth-round draft pick for a three-time All-Pro that they hope can help a position group devastated by injuries.

The Chiefs made space for Hopkins by placing wide receiver Skyy Moore, who did not appear on the injury report for Sunday’s game in Las Vegas following Wednesday’s practice, on injured reserve with what it called a “core muscle injury.”

Kansas City was desperate for help at wide receiver after Marquise Brown had shoulder surgery before the season, Rashee Rice underwent season-ending knee surgery, and JuJu Smith-Schuster hurt his hamstring in last week’s win over the 49ers.

The Titans will get a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft for Hopkins, who has been dealing with a knee injury for much of the season. It could become a fourth-rounder if he plays 60% of snaps with the Chiefs and they make the Super Bowl.

Tennessee also agreed to pay $2.5 million of his remaining salary, an important point for the salary cap-strapped Chiefs.

Hopkins is the third high-profile wide receiver to be traded in just over a week.

But he gives the Chiefs a proven star — 943 catches for 12,528 yards and 79 TDs in a career spent mostly in Arizona and Houston — along with an accomplished red zone target for a team that has struggled to score touchdowns inside the opposing 20-yard line.

This is the third straight season the Chiefs have traded for wide receiver help. They acquired Kadarius Toney from the Giants two years ago, though he was cut before this season, and Mecole Hardman from the Jets last season.

🏈 Chiefs make Hopkins signing official

The Big 12 has arguably been the best conference in college basketball, winning two of the past four national championships while getting at least seven teams into the NCAA Tournament seven times in the last 10 years.

The addition of four new schools, three of which have recent NCAA Tournament appearances, may end the argument.

“The league is a monster and it’s been a monster for a long time,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Everybody is good.”

The conference tied for the most NCAA Tournament berths with eight last spring and won consecutive championships — by Baylor and Kansas — before UConn went back to back the last two years.

Kansas has been a perennial favorite and is No. 1 in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll</a>. No. 4 Houston, No. 5 Iowa State, No. 8 Baylor and No. 20 Cincinnati also were ranked.

No. 10 Arizona gives the Big 12 five of the top 10 teams in the preseason poll. Fellow new arrivals Arizona State, Colorado and Utah also make the conference stronger, potentially putting the Big 12 in position for a massive haul when NCAA Tournament teams are announced on Selection Sunday.

“Every single night you’re playing against old players, talented players, smart players and elite coaching, and as difficult and challenging as that is, that’s awesome,” Cincinnati coach Wes Miller said. “It helps you elevate your coaching, helps you elevate your program and what you’re doing and how you do them. I think that experience is awesome.”

Kansas was the preseason No. 1 a year ago and fell short of expectations, knocked out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-college-basketball-6bccdbe78ca31b5737e35161878d068f">Self retooled his roster,</a>&nbsp;adding shooters and athleticism to play around All-American Hunter Dickinson. Self hit the transfer portal hard, adding several key players, including A.J. Storr, who averaged 16.8 points at Wisconsin, and Zeke Mayo, who averaged nearly 19 per game for South Dakota State.

Mixed with a stellar recruiting class and a veteran backcourt, the Jayhawks again should be a favorite to win the Big 12 title and make a March Madness run.

Kansas will have plenty of competition from the deep, talented Big 12.

Houston has reached at least the Sweet 16 four straight seasons, including a trip to the 2021 Final Four. The Cougars have four starters back from last year’s Sweet 16 team, led by dynamic guard L.J. Cryer.

Iowa State has its highest preseason ranking ever and three starters back from last year’s team, which had the second-most wins in program history. Tamin Lipsey is one of the nation’s most versatile point guards, able to do a little of everything.

Baylor lost four starters, but coach Scott Drew filled the holes with a strong transfer class. The group includes two players with Final Four experience, Jeremy Roach from Duke and former Miami forward Norchad Omier.

Arizona got a huge boost when high-scoring guard Caleb Love opted to return instead of leaving for the NBA. The Wildcats have a solid returning core and coach Tommy Lloyd filled holes via the transfer portal, including Oakland forward Trey Townsend.

Cincinnati returns its top three scorers as the Bearcats attempt to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019.

Texas Tech lost its top two scorers, but coach Grant McCasland has a rosters full of shooters who can keep the Red Raiders in almost any game.

Kansas State missed the NCAA Tournament last season after making an Elite Eight run the year before, but coach Jerome Tang has the Wildcats poised to make another run by beefing up the roster through the portal, including former Illinois big man Coleman Hawkins.

Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley has one of his best recruiting classes, headlined by five-star big man Jayden Quaintance. The additions of Alston Mason (Missouri State) and BJ Freeman (Milwaukee) give the Sun Devils two proven scorers.

BYU always has shooters and this season, the first under coach Kevin Young, will be no different.

The Big 12’s expansion helped create some marquee matchups in a conference already filled with them, capped by Arizona at Kansas in the regular-season finale on March 8.

The Jayhawks also have consecutive games against No. 9 North Carolina and Michigan State in early November, and a showdown with No. 7 Duke in Las Vegas.

Arizona hosts Duke on Nov. 22 and continues its rivalry with former Pac-12 member UCLA in Phoenix.

Houston will host No. 11 Auburn on Nov. 9 and faces No. 2 Alabama on Nov. 26 in Las Vegas in what could be two of the best nonconference games of the season. Baylor at two-time reigning national champion UConn on Dec. 4 is another can’t-miss game.

🏈 Week 9 KJCCC, KCAC, MIAA schedule

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team dropped a tight four-set match to the Butler Grizzlies on Wednesday Night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won the first set, but the Grizzlies rallied to win the next three sets 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 23-25.

Hutchinson falls to 17-18 overall and 5-7 in the KJCCC standings. The Blue Dragons play host to Seward County at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons were led by freshman outside hitter Atlyn Proctor with 21 kills. This was her third 20-kill match of the season.

Freshman right-side hitter Tiana Simmons had 11 kills, while freshman Kierny Follmer added seven kills and sophomore McKenzie Murphy had five kills and two blocks.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson finished with 41 assists.

Freshman libero Addy Foster had 21 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Beatriz Carvalho had three service aced.

Butler was led by Sophia Neilhouse’s 17 kills. Sara Sullivan added 15 kills.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the teams haven't announced the trade. The Chiefs are sending a conditional fifth-round pick to the Titans, according to NFL Network. The 32-year-old Hopkins gives Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs another playmaker to help replace injured receiver Rashee Rice. Tua Tagovailoa practices for the first time since suffering a concussion in Week 2

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Tua Tagovailoa practiced Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion in Week 2, and the Dolphins are aiming for him to start Sunday against Arizona. Tagovailoa still needs to progress through the final stages of the NFL's concussion protocol for that to happen, but he moved one step closer by returning to the practice field. Tagovailoa has met with numerous medical experts who specialize in brain and head injuries since being diagnosed with the third concussion of his NFL career on Sept. 12. The experts deemed it safe for him to return to football, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday.
