WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Amber Glenn was disappointed but not defeated after her short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the reigning champion defiantly vowing to “go on the attack” when she returned to the ice for the free skate on Friday night.

She did exactly that, beginning with a powerful triple axel to start the program and ending with an elegant layback spin.

The 25-year-old from Plano, Texas, wound up with 216.79 points, enough to edge out Alysa Liu, who had led after the short program but made a couple of small mistakes in her free skate that proved to be just big enough. The two-time national champion, in the midst of a comeback from a two-year retirement, finished right behind Glenn with 215.33 points.

“I wasn't feeling my absolute best and today, being able to not fully lock in but for the most part get into the zone I needed to be, I'm very proud of my mental fortitude and the progress I've made,” Glenn said.

Two-time champion Bradie Tennell, who was second after the short program, struggled through a fall on her triple lutz in her free skate and was passed for third by Sarah Everhardt, an 18-year-old rising star from Haymarket, Virginia.

Glenn rolled into nationals unbeaten for the season, becoming the first American woman to win the Grand Prix Final in nearly 15 years along the way. But after her uneven short program, Glenn was left in third place and trailing Liu by nearly six points.

Her opening triple axel may have been the best of her career, and it set the tone for the rest of her night. Glenn landed six more triple jumps, including three in combination, before her only real mistake — a fall on her triple loop late in the program.

“I still don't believe I won,” Glenn said. “It's a real shock to me.”

Liu, the youngest U.S. champion ever when she triumphed at the age of 13, was trying to add a third title five years after winning her last. But a couple of errors, including a mistake on her layback spin at the end, may have cost her the gold.

“I did not think I won," she said with a laugh. “I honestly didn't know if I would medal or not.”

Earlier in the night, two-time defending ice dance world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates pranced their way through three decades of popular American music and into a big lead after the rhythm dance portion of their competition.

Chock and Bates scored 92.16 points, nearly 10 more than second-place Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko. To put that into context, second through fourth places were separated by less than a point, with the pair of Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik scoring the exact same — 82.13 points — as Caroline Green and Michael Parsons.

Chock and Bates were not available after their performance because she was dealing with a food-related stomach bug.

They are going for their fourth straight national title and sixth overall, which would tie the U.S. record held by Meryl Davis and Charlie White. And this one would come 11 years after Chock and Bates first stepped atop the podium.

The ice dance finale is Saturday, when world champion Ilia Malinin also will be in action during the men’s short program.

The proscribed style for the rhythm dance this season is “social dances and styles of the 1950s, ‘60s and ’70s," and while many teams chose to dance to Elvis Presley, Nancy Sinatra or disco fare, the avant-garde Chock and Bates chose to take their fans on a rollicking journey through all three decades of American popular culture.

There was music from “Hawaii Five-O” and a version of “Let’s Twist Again.” Chock and Bates did the “Watusi with Lucy” and spent time “Stayin’ Alive” with the Bee Gees. And of course, they had the Village People leading the arena in doing the “YMCA.”

The performance underscored their status as favorites heading into the world championships in March in Boston.

They're probably the favorites heading into the Winter Olympics next year in Milan, too.

But Sinner broke there, then dominated the ensuing tiebreaker, and broke again to begin the second set. The only trouble Sinner ran into the rest of the way was when he clutched at his left hamstring, and then his right thigh, in the third set. It would cap a covert operation that included owner Shad Khan moving on from general manager Trent Baalke and Coen reversing course with the Buccaneers. MCPHERSON, Kan. - The shots would not fall for the Hutchinson Salthawks Thursday as the Blue Valley West Jaguars used a strong defensive first quarter to upset the Hutchinson Salthawks in the first round of the McPherson Invitational Tournament Thursday afternoon to come away with a 53 to 42 win.

The biggest surprise was the Salthawks not being able to score a point in the first quarter as Blue Valley West jumped out to a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Hutchinson cut the Jaguar lead down to six in the second quarter to trail 23-16 at the half.

But Blue Valley West took all the momentum that the Salthawks had built to outscore the Salthawks 17-9 in the third and then built a 15 point lead that Hutchinson could not respond to.

The Salthawks made a final run to pull within five points late thanks to two Lamar Govain three point baskets, but the Jags shut the door by knocking down free throws to earn the win.

Hutchinson was led in scoring by Taishaun Govain's 15 points and Lamar Govain's 10 point afternoon. Terrell King added 7 but was held to 1 for 13 shooting on the day.

Blue Valley West was led by Brandon Kirk with 13 points and Kade Wysong and Aiden Adams both scored 8.

Hutch High will now match up with Wichita East at 3pm today in the consolation bracket.

Blue Valley West will take on St. James Academy who defeated East in the game prior to the Salthawk vs Jaguar contest. St. James is coached by former Medicine Lodge, HutchCC and Newman stand out Stan Dohm.

🏀 Blue Valley West pulls 1st round upset win over Hutch High

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Alysa Liu wore the smudge of blood on her dress at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Thursday night like a poignant badge of honor, symbolic of everything she has gone through over the past few years.

The 19-year-old has been through some battles.

The youngest American champion ever when she triumphed at 13, and then defended her title the next year, Liu walked away from the sport in 2022 content with her career. She had done everything that everyone had ever asked of her, and she was more than ready to move on to the next phase of her life, which meant enrolling at UCLA to study psychology.

But then, early last year, Liu decided to mount a comeback. And with the bright lights shining again, Liu delivered a brilliant and breathtaking short program in her return to nationals, scoring 76.36 points to take a solid lead over two-time U.S. champ Bradie Tennell and defending champion Amber Glenn heading into Friday night's free skate.

“I was emotional from the very beginning to the end,” said Liu, who had nicked the palm of her hand when she grasped her skate blade especially hard during the program. “And I really loved that for me, and I felt very connected to the ice.”

In the pairs competition earlier in the night, Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea scored 77.19 points in a near-flawless short program. It was more than four points better than their best in international competition, and put Kam and O’Shea more than eight ahead of second-place Emily Chan and Spencer Howe heading into Saturday night’s free skate.

This year’s nationals, just over a year out from the Milano-Cortina Games, should help identify the front-runners for the squad the U.S. sends to Italy. It also will go a long way toward deciding the U.S. team for the world championships, which are returning to American soil for the first time in nine years this March in Boston.

Who would have thought Liu might be there?

“I don’t remember the first time I won (nationals) or like, the feeling of it, honestly,” said Liu, who got back on the ice after a ski trip, when she realized had she missed the adrenaline of competing. “It feels like a different lifetime. And when I’ve seen like, old videos of me, it’s like that wasn’t me, you know what I’m saying? But it was, obviously. It was just so long ago.”

Liu's score Thursday night would have been the third highest in international competition this season, and it was more than five points clear of Tennell, who scored 71.23 to land in second. Glenn scored 70.91 after a mistake on her combination jump.

Tennell was still pleased with her performance, especially given the foot and ankle injuries that have hobbled her for years.

“It felt amazing,” she said. “This program is so lively and so energetic and so much fun for me to perform, and there's nothing like performing for your home country. Nationals always feels like coming home. And I'm very happy.”

The 25-year-old Glenn wasn't nearly as pleased, especially after a season in which she won every competition she entered.

“I didn't feel the attack or adrenaline going out there today," Glenn said. “I came into this event trained and ready but definitely more fatigued and not quite as — I'm trying to find a word for it — exhilarated as I'd like to be.”

Kam and O'Shea, who were fifth at the Grand Prix Final last month, opened their short program with a clean triple twist before landing side-by-side triple salchows. But it was their throw triple loop that highlighted their program, and Kam and O'Shea both knew it when their music came to an end — she punched both of her fists and he punched one of his own.

And their moms, who had clenched hands while watching from the stands, finally exhaled and celebrated.

“My mom and I share some high anxiety in pressure moments. I think she knows what I feel,” Kam said, “but being able to see them on the big screen, it's just really special for them to come to these events with us.”

Chan and Howe, the 2023 silver medalists at nationals, scored 69.10 points for their program to Lara Fabian's cover of “Je Suis Malade." The score was dragged down just a bit by a noticeable wobble going into their lift midway through.

Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, the reigning silver medalists, were right behind Chan and Howe with 69.03 points.

“We were both really happy with how we felt out there,” said Chan, who dealt with a concussion earlier this season that limited the amount of time the pair could spend on the ice. “We put our heads together and really made a lot of improvement and felt we were really happy with our training, and we wanted to put it out here tonight.”

Memphis (15-4, 5-1 American Athletic Conference) broke open the tight game by scoring 12 straight points in the final five minutes. There were 10 lead changes and three ties in the contest.

Harlond Beverly led the Shockers (11-8, 1-5) with 18 points. Corey Washington scored 11 points and Quincy Ballard added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Wichita State. which has lost five of six.

The first half was filled with turnovers and poor shooting. Memphis’ sloppy play led to 14 miscues before the break. Neither team shot better than 40%, and together they shot 5 for 20 from 3-point range.

Wichita State: The Shockers held the lead through much of the first half, showing much better than their conference record.

Memphis: As has been the case in other home games, Memphis got off to a poor start and trailed at the break. It took a late rally for the Tigers to pull out the win.

Haggerty had 18 points with 4:54 left when he went to the locker room with an injury, and the Tigers trailing 51-49. Tyrese Hunter connected on a 3-pointer 26 seconds later to give Memphis a 52-51 lead. Memphis went on a 12-0 run, and Hunter had two steals in the outburst.

Xavier Bell, Wichita State’s leading scorer averaging 14.8 points, was held scoreless, missing all four of his shots. Four fouls limited his time on the floor.

🏀 No. 24 Memphis mounts second half comeback to down WSU

The rosters for the&nbsp;annual Eight-Man All-Star Games have been revealed. The game will be played on Saturday, June 7 in Beloit. The rosters were voted on&nbsp;by the Eight-Man Football Coaches Association.

The Division II game will kickoff at 10 a.m. while the Division I game will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Hutch Post area selections include&nbsp;Ry Kooiman (Central Christian School), Keaton Miller (Central Christian School), Connor Fowler (Fairfield), Garrett Lanning (Fairfield), Kyler Bergkamp (Little River) and Ruxton Birdsong (Little River).

Central Christian School head coach Matt Barnett and Fairfield head coach Kyle Finder were both selected as assistant coaches for the Division II West Team.

WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;For the second straight season Wichita State softball has been voted the favorite to win the American Athletic Conference by the league&apos;s coaches.
 
Wichita State received four first place votes and 75 total points in the preseason coaches poll. A total of seven points separate the top three teams in the poll. Coming in behind right behind Wichita State are Florida Atlantic (70) and North Texas (68).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Bills and Chiefs have met seven times over roughly four years, building such an intense, competitive rivalry that Kansas City safety Justin Reid admitted that the Super Bowl champs just assume&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-analysis-playoffs-chiefs-7aec90e5c2383aa05884644750f46030">they’ll see Buffalo twice a year</a>.

Once in the regular season and once in the playoffs.

So, the Chiefs begin working on them in the offseason, studying everything Buffalo does on offense and defense with their eyes on January. And it must be paying off, because while the Bills have won all four matchups in the regular season, and handed the Chiefs one of their two losses this season,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-playoffs-mahomes-allen-93deeaa4fb1312ca4a5d956788a8d8a6">Kansas City has won all three games</a>&nbsp;played in the postseason.

The Chiefs will try to do it again Sunday night as they pursue an unprecedented third straight Lombardi Trophy, while the Bills will try to end what is fast becoming a postseason curse by finally beating Kansas City for the AFC championship.

“You always remember the feeling of not pulling through. That sticks with you for a while, and it really doesn’t leave,” Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen said. “But again, I think every year you go through in this league, you learn more things about yourself, about your team, about the game of football. We’re just grateful and humbled to have another opportunity at it.”

It’s hardly surprising that the Bills and Chiefs have met so often, or that they are meeting again, when you consider the collective star power. Allen could be headed to his first MVP award this season, while&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-playoffs-afc-c80da15f5d80d86eae0e8f4c882fc88c">Kansas City counterpart Patrick Mahomes</a>&nbsp;already has two.

“I don’t think anyone is making this too big of a moment. Everybody knows how big it is,” said Mahomes, who is 4-2 in AFC title games with both of the losses coming in overtime, “but at the same time, we have to go about our process.”

As for the Bills, who have not made it back to the Super Bowl since losing to the Cowboys in their fourth straight appearance in the 1993 season, all of those playoff losses to Kansas City over the years have come in heartbreaking fashion.

They scored the first nine points of the 2020 AFC title game before getting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/reigning-champion-chiefs-dump-bills-38-24-in-afc-title-game-d6f4334e89b9c54f70bf16d0758a6492">outscored 38-15 the rest of the way</a>. In the divisional round the next year, Buffalo took the lead on a touchdown with 13 seconds left, only to watch Mahomes lead the Chiefs to a tying field goal as time expired, then&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cincinnati-bengals-kansas-city-chiefs-buffalo-bills-nfl-sports-060041ec1dd4c9bea035ca7283fa5e7a">beat them with a TD in overtime</a>. And in the divisional round a year ago, Isiah Pacheco’s short touchdown run with 40 seconds left lifted the Chiefs to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-bills-score-kelce-mahomes-534e95ba7ec9ff08367c7543cae540ae">a 24-20 victory in Buffalo</a>.

“It feels like a divisional game. We know them really well, they know us,” Reid said of playing the Bills. “In the offseason we’re preparing for each other because we know we’ll face each other twice, because it seems to happen every year. And it’s always a tough challenge, but it’s one we’re excited for, and another good one for all the fans.”

The Bills are 0-4 on the road in the playoffs under Sean McDermott, and they’ve dropped seven straight since a 29-10 victory at Miami in the AFC championship game in the 1992 season. Two of their losses have come in overtime, a 22-19 defeat at Houston in the 2019 wild-card round and that 42-36 loss at Kansas City in the 2021 divisional round. There’s also the “Music City Miracle,” a 22-16 loss at Tennessee in the 1999 wild-card round that was decided on a kickoff return in the final seconds.

McDermott will never be considered the NFL’s biggest gambler on fourth downs, but the Bills coach has been one of the most successful this season. Buffalo converted 16 of 22 opportunities in the regular season for a 72.7% success rate that was second in the league. It’s a big improvement from McDermott’s first season, when the Bills converted 2 of 15.

“You grow through the years. You learn things. You learn about a bunch about your team for that season,” he said. “So all are a little bit different. But you continue to try to put your team in position to win. And that’s what we do.”

The Chiefs didn’t have injured pass rusher Charles Omenihu nor cornerback Jaylen Watson when the Bills beat them 30-21 in November. Omenihu didn’t return from his torn ACL for two more weeks, and Watson didn’t make it back from a broken ankle until their 24-13 divisional win over Houston. Both could play a big role in slowing down Allen and Co. on Sunday.

The Bills had a league-best plus-24 turnover differential in the regular season, and they’re plus-3 in two playoff games. The Chief were merely plus-6 in the regular season, but they’re plus-11 and have not lost a turnover since playing Buffalo in Week 11.

“Every team that’s won ball security, won the turnover battle, has won the game (in the playoffs) so far,” Mahomes said. “That is important to us. Buffalo does a great job it. I don’t think they’ve lost a turnover battle this season.”

The Chiefs had eight sacks against the Texans last weekend, the second most in a playoff game in franchise history. But getting Allen to the ground is a tough task — he was sacked 17 times in the regular season, and Kansas City failed to do it at all.

“Once you have ahold of him,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “you’d better know he’s going to be difficult to bring down.”

Oklahoma State was picked as the preseason favorite in a vote by the league&apos;s head coaches in the 2025 Big 12 Baseball Preseason Poll. The ranking is the highest in program history, surpassing the Cowboy&apos;s previous high of second, which they had been slotted seven times in the history of the Conference poll. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
 
The Cowboys received nine first-place votes and are coming off a season that saw OSU win the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship and host the NCAA Stillwater Regional. In its first season in the Conference, Arizona tallied four first-place votes to slot second after competing in the NCAA Tucson Regional last season followed by third-place TCU, who grabbed the final first-place vote.
 
West Virginia, fresh off its first appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals, came in at the fourth spot followed by Texas Tech. Arizona State comes in at sixth in its first season in the league, with UCF closely behind after making its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2017. Kansas State was voted eighth after advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2024.
 
Kansas is ninth and Cincinnati is 10th followed by Houston at 11th, Utah at 12th, Baylor at 13th and BYU at 14th.
 
Oklahoma State&apos;s Nolan Schubart was named the Preseason Player of the Year to highlight the 2025 Big 12 Preseason Baseball Awards while Kansas&apos; Dominic Voegele was tabbed the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Houston&apos;s Cade Climie became the first Cougar to receive preseason Big 12 baseball recognition and TCU&apos;s Noah Franco was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year.
 
Schubart was named an All-American in 2024 and became the 13th player in OSU history to do so in multiple seasons. The 2024 All-Big 12 Second Team member recorded 21 multi-hit games as well as a team-leading 20 multi-RBI contests. The junior led the Big 12 in home runs (23), RBIs (68), slugging percentage (.838) and on-base percentage (.513) and set a Big 12 record with 18 total bases against Wichita State (April 30).
 
Voegele was picked as a 2024 First Team Freshman All-American and earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year after posting a 7-2 record with a 3.32 ERA. The righty from Columbia, Illinois struck out 80 batters in his collegiate debut season, the most by a freshman in program history, and tied a school record for freshmen with 15 starts.
 
Climie was named the NJCAA World Series MVP after leading Blinn to the NJCAA National Championship. The right-handed batter finished with 20 home runs and 76 RBIs on a .394 batting average. He recorded 27 multi-hit games which included eight three-hit games and one four-hit game.
 
Franco, a left-handed pitcher from Downey, California, was rated as one of the top 100 prospects in the Major League Baseball Draft and was a two-time member of the 18U USA Baseball National Team. The two-way player was named a high school All-American by MLB, Baseball America, Under Armour and Perfect Game as he hit .337 with a 0.89 ERA as a senior.
 
Schubart and Voegele were joined by TCU&apos;s Ben Abeldt as those unanimously selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 team. All 14 Big 12 squads open the season on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Tulsa Drillers and the Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Thursday that 10-year Major League veteran manager and 2007 American League Manager of the Year, Eric Wedge, will be the team’s 24th full-time manager.

Wedge becomes one of the most accomplished managers in Tulsa baseball history. He has spent ten seasons leading Major League clubs, including seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians from 2003 to 2009 and three with the Seattle Mariners from 2011 to 2013. During that time, he won 774 games in the majors.

Wedge’s managerial career began in 1998 in the minors when he was named manager of Cleveland’s Single-A affiliate. He spent a total of five seasons managing in the minors, amassing three Manager of the Year awards before being named manager of Cleveland ahead of the 2003 MLB season.

After his stint in Cleveland, Wedge was named manager of the Mariners in October 2010 and won 213 games during three seasons in Seattle.

As a player, Wedge was an All-American catcher at Wichita State, where he helped the Shockers reach two College World Series, winning the national championship in 1989.

He later returned to the school as the head baseball coach. He was hired in 2019 and left the school before the 2023 season to focus on personal health matters.

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;With the first game at the reimagined David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium seven months and one day away, the interior of the upgraded stadium is starting to come to life with detailed design and state-of-the-art seating.
&nbsp;
The seating will feature the &quot;K Flag&quot; design in the north bowl of the stadium, with &quot;Rock Chalk&quot; proudly displayed throughout the view level of the west side of the stadium. The stadium will also boast multi-colored seats &ndash; blue, navy, red and white &ndash; to complement the new design.

The seating bowl won&apos;t just look different to Kansas fans, it will also feel different. Every seat on the north and west sides of the stadium will be seatbacks to aid in the comfort for fans taking in the action. Fans will also see a 50 percent increase in area per seat and leg room in all renovated sections of the stadium, adding comfort to the fan experience. In addition, suites will be 80 feet closer to the field and all seats on the west and north will be closer to the action than in the previous design.

The first row of seating will be four feet higher off the field for improved viewing and there will be approximately 2,300 club seats in three different club spaces with unique social zones. All of the seating -- with the exception of 160 premium seats &ndash; will be installed by Irwin Seating Company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Irwin is one of the most reputable seating companies nationally and has worked on 23 of 32 NHL arenas, 18 of 29 NBA arenas, 18 of 30 NFL stadiums and 20 of 30 MLB stadiums. Irwin also has deep experience in Broadway theaters and thousands of movie theaters across North America. The remaining 160 seats will be designed and installed by DreamSeat who is a leading designer of custom logo premium seating across professional and college clients.

While the design and installation for the seats at the new David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium are finalized, the field design has not been finalized yet, but will be revealed in the coming months. Any current renderings or pictures showing the field are still incomplete.

The Bears were down a dozen when Dug McDaniel drilled a 3-pointer to put the Wildcats up 40-28 less than four minutes into the second half.

Baylor was down nine when Jalen Celestine made a pair of free throws to ignite a 19-5 run for a 55-40 lead. Edgecombe had 11 points and capped the surge with a 3-pointer. Celestine also had a pair of 3s in that stretch.

Brendan Hausen hit his third 3 of the half to pull Kansas State within 57-56 with just under five minutes to go but Celestine and Edgecombe worked the Bears’ lead back to nine with a minute left.

Celestine scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for the Bears (12-6, 4-3 Big 12 Conference). Norchad Omier grabbed 13 rebounds for Baylor.

David N’Guessan scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Kansas State (7-11, 1-6), which has lost 15-straight road games and six overall. McDaniel and Hausen both added 12.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 23 Hutchinson Community College men's basketball win streak ended at seven with a 91-86 loss to Barton on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are now 13-6 overall, 9-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Barton (15-4, 9-4) ended the first half and started the second half on a 10-0 run to go from down 31-28, to up 38-31 with just over 18 minutes to play. The Cougars built the lead up to 10, but saw the Blue Dragons continue to chip away at the lead.

After Barton led by 12, it's largest lead of the game, with 2:08 to play, Hutchinson pulled within four, but never got any closer.

The Cougars dominated the glass, out rebounding the Blue Dragons 43-34, including 22 offensive rebounds. Barton scored 22 second chance points. Barton also committed just six turnovers.

Hutchinson shot 50% from the floor, including 11 of 18 from behind-the-arc. The Blue Dragons had 16 turnovers in the loss, which resulted in 16 Cougar points.

Bo Aldridge and Kobe Smith each had 19 points apiece to lead the Blue Dragon scoring. D.J. Dudley had 17, while Mikhail Abdul-Hamid finished with 12 and Khalil Arnold 11.
