
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Cowley (19-12) beat the odds and topped Hutchinson (14-17) for the third time this season.
The Dragons built an eight-point lead with 3:28 to play in the first half before the Tigers crawled back within four at the break.
The teams went back and forth in a game that featured five ties and eight lead changes.
Cowley went up 51-50 with 6:06 to play when Xavier Vickerstaff hit his sixth triple of the contest.
Vickerstaff scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second frame.
Daleron Thomas led Hutchinson with 19 and scored 13 of those in the first half.
Hutchinson answered with a pair of and-ones from Chudier Dorar and Asher Boney. Dorar completed his three-point play while Boney missed the free-throw opportunity.
Cowley got an and-one from Marcus Smith with 2:49 left to go up one. He missed from the line.
Thomas put Hutchinson up 60-57 with his and-one with 1:33 to go. He also missed from the charity stripe.
C.J. Majors answered with a layup to pull the Tigers within one.
Smith got another bucket with 20 seconds left to put Cowley up a point.
With 13 seconds left, Hutchinson took a timeout to draw up a final play.
Thomas got a defended look with a drive to the basket. His shot missed but Kordell Williams followed with an offensive rebound. His putback was no good.
