The Broncos went three-and-out nine times and Denver's only sustained drive was an 80-yarder over 12 plays that Gordon capped with his 1-yard TD. Garoppolo threw a touchdown pass and was intercepted in his first start in place of injured starter Trey Lance, who broke an ankle in Week 2.

But Castillo struggled, and Michael Massey homered and drove in four runs during the Royals’ biggest inning since 2004. The Mariners stayed in the third wild-card spot, a half-game behind Tampa Bay. Seattle remained four games ahead of Baltimore for that last AL playoff slot. Castillo, an All-Star traded from Cincinnati to the Mariners in midseason, got a $108 million, five-year contract.

Grove, making his sixth appearance and fifth start, gave up one run and three hits to help the Dodgers tie a club record with their 106th win — previously accomplished in 2019 and 2021. Andre Jackson pitched the final three innings for his first save. The Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman doubled in the first inning, giving him 191 hits and tying his career-high set in 2018 with Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge remained at 60 home runs, one short of Roger Maris’ American League record, when the New York Yankees’ 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox was called after six innings because of rain. Judge went 1 for 2 with a double and was due up next for the Yankees when play was stopped. The game was called after a 98-minute delay, sending Judge to Toronto still in pursuit of Maris. New York can clinch the AL East title Monday night with a victory over the Blue Jays.

UNDATED (AP) — Tennessee and North Carolina State have broken into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll. Florida State is back in the rankings for the first time in four years. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 55 of 63 first-place votes in the Top 25. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson all held their places. Oklahoma’s upset loss to Kansas State created room for teams to move up, like No. 6 Southern California and No. 7 Kentucky. Tennessee moved up three to No. 8. The International team already was depleted by players who defected to Saudi-funded LIV Golf and were not eligible. It still showed plenty of fight. It just doesn't have a cup to show for it. The Americans won for the ninth straight time, and their only loss was in 1998 since the matches began in 1994.

There were a lot of tire issues that contributed to a track-record 16 cautions. There was also a 56-minute red flag for lightning, and a record 36 lead changes among 19 drivers. Chase Elliott entered as the points leader, and was ahead in the race around the midway part when he had hard contact and a fiery finish. Playoff contender Christopher Bell also got knocked out after a tire issue. And there were some bumping between William Byron and Denny Hamlin.

Sports Headlines for Monday

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones blamed himself for the Chiefs' first loss of the season.

Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes accepted responsibility, too.

The truth was there were plenty of head-scratching moments Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts rallied for the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left to steal a 20-17 victory in their home opener.

“It (stinks), man,” Jones said when asked about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he drew on Indy's final drive. “It was third down, we got off the field, defense fought hard and I kind of put us in a situation to get back on the field. And then we got scored on, and that sums up the game. So, I’ll take that one. It was my fault. It was definitely my fault.”

Jones thought he was simply having a conversation with Colts quarterback Matt Ryan and didn't know what drew the flag. Ryan said he wasn't sure, either.

According to a postgame pool report, referee Shawn Smith explained the call was for abusive language toward an opponent and additional details would be included in the crew's game report. Either way,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/highlight-michael-pittman-jr-rips-away-potential-int-translates-it-into-25-yard-">the result was the same — an extended drive that led to the loss</a>.

From Skyy Moore's muffed punt at his own 4-yard line to another misplayed punt that resulted in Kansas City being pinned inside the 1-yard line, Sunday's game was full of missed opportunities.

Yes, the Chiefs converted a 2-point pass just before halftime to erase Matt Ammendola's missed extra point. But they couldn't overcome Ammendola missing a 34-yard field goal to the left, setting up the Colts' final drive.

Or the fake field goal Reid called for on Kansas City's previous possession. Instead of potentially extending the lead to 20-13 with a 42-yarder, Tommy Townsend's pass fell incomplete.

“That’s one I probably shouldn’t have called,” Reid said. "In this league, the parity is crazy so any mistake is magnified. But we thought we could get it.”

Mahomes wasn't happy, either, when the Chiefs (2-1) decided to run out the clock before halftime instead of trying to score again.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1574106345703292928">It resulted in a brief shouting match</a>&nbsp;between the quarterback and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy before Reid broke it up.

But Mahomes was more upset with the Chiefs' inability to finish drives. In four red-zone trips, only two resulted in touchdowns and both came after turnovers deep in Colts territory.

Otherwise, it was a field goal kind of day.

“As an offense, we’ve got to make it where those little mistakes don’t cause a loss,” Mahomes said after going 20 of 35 for 262 yards, one TD and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/can-t-miss-play-rodney-mcleod-ices-colts-win-over-chiefs-with-int-on-mahomes">his first interception of the season</a>. "We have multiple chances to get in the end zone. If we get in one time in the second half and don’t stall out at the goal line, we win the game.”

Perhaps even more frustrating was that it all happened against a foe still reeling from last week's embarrassing shutout at Jacksonville and still seeking its first win. This time, though, the Colts (1-1-1) took full advantage of Kansas City's miscues.

They got their first lead of the season three plays after the muffed punt and took the lead for good on Ryan's 12-yard TD pass to rookie Jelanie Woods nine plays after the call on Jones.

“We still have a lot of improving to do and what I’ve found throughout my career is usually you find ways to get better throughout the season,” Ryan said. “But you’ve got to find ways to win till you get there.”

Kansas City, meanwhile, will spend this week looking for solutions after losing for just the third time in Mahomes' 16 career September starts.

“I didn’t think I said anything vulgar or disrespectful, but I just can’t say anything within the heat of the moment,” Jones said. "The game is changing, so I have to evolve to the game.”

🏈 Chiefs lose to Colts Sunday in Indianapolis

Frisco, TX- The Wind Surge fell short to the Frisco RoughRiders 11-3 on Sunday evening in game one of the Texas League Championship series as eleven hits and a grand slam powered the RoughRiders to a game one victory. Frisco leads the best of three series, 1-0.

Frisco struck first in the bottom of the first inning behind an RBI single from second baseman Justin Foscue to take an early 1-0 lead. Foscue finished two for five with three RBIs in the game.

The RoughRiders scored four more runs in the second inning as Jonathan Ornelas and Foscue each hit RBI singles to score three runs. Thomas Saggese followed with a double that allowed Foscue to score to stretch Frisco’s lead to 5-0 and force an early exit from Surge starter Kody Funderburk.

The Surge got on the board in the fourth inning behind a solo home run from Yunior Severino that cut the deficit to 5-1. Severino finished the game one for two with two RBIs and a walk.

The RoughRiders busted the game open in the sixth inning as Scott Kapers hit a grand slam for his second homer of the night and stretched the lead to 11-1.

Jair Camargo finished the game two for four with an RBI including an RBI single in the eighth inning. Yunior Severino followed with a sacrifice fly to score another run and cut the deficit to 11-3.

Frisco leads the best of three Championship Series 1-0. The next two games of the series, if necessary will be at Riverfront Stadium. Game two is set for Tuesday.

“We did a lot of good things offensively, had a commanding lead in the ballgame, and we let our guard down a little bit and didn’t shut it down,” Servais said. “I go back to the thing we talk about all the time, controlling the strike zone. We gave them an opportunity to come back in the ballgame because we didn’t throw strikes.”

Castillo struggled to begin the sixth, and Michael Massey homered and drove in four runs during the Royals’ biggest inning since 2004.

“I just wanted to get something up in the zone and put a good swing on it,” Massey said. “I wasn’t trying to hit a homer; I was just trying to find the barrel.”

Sophomore Baylee Miller had a combined 36 kills on Saturday, but the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team suffered a pair of losses to nationally ranked opponents on Saturday at the Blue Dragon Classic.

The day started off with a three-set loss to No. 8 Trinity Valley, 17-25, 21-25, 17-25.

The Blue Dragons then dropped the first two sets to No. 17 Mineral Area, rallied to win sets 3 and 4, but the Cardinals rallied from four points down midway through the decisive set to defeat Hutchinson 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12.

Hutchinson went 1-3 in its annual home tournament and fell to 17-8 overall. The Blue Dragons return to Jayhawk West play on Monday at Barton in Great Bend.

After forcing the fifth set, the Dragons had momentum. Miller had a back-row kill for a 3-0 lead. Morgan Harvey had a service ace for a 5-2 lead. The Dragons then led 9-5 after Mineral Area was called for a net violation.

The Cardinals then scored five in a row to take a 10-9 lead. The Dragons tied the set at 10-, 11- and 12-all. Mineral Area scored the final three points of the match.

Freshman Adriana Delgado’s second overtime goal of the season on Saturday powered the Hutchinson Community College Women’s Soccer team to a second-straight victory over a nationally ranked opponent.

After a tremendous counter attack started by sophomore Hadlie Lowe, Delgado delivered the game-winning goal 1 minute, 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Blue Dragons to a 2-1 victory over No. 15 Coffeyville at the Salthawk Sports Complex. Hutchinson defeated No. 17 Cowley 2-1 on Wednesday in Arkansas City.

The Blue Dragons improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Jayhawk West. Coffeyville fell to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Jayhawk East. The Blue Dragons are off until next Saturday, October 1 when Hutchinson travels to No. 6 Butler.

One minute, 25 seconds into overtime, Coffeyville had a corner kick from the left side of Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles. The kick bounced around in front of the net and was cleared by freshman defender Kendra Brungardt. She flipped a pass to Lowe, who beat a Coffeyville player to the ball.

Delgado also scored an overtime game winner in Hutchinson’s 4-3 double-overtime victory at Northeastern Junior College on August 27. She is just the second Blue Dragon player in program history with two career overtime goals, joining Alicia Robinson, who had two overtime winners in 2010.

The Blue Dragons are now 2-1 against Coffeyville in overtime games and 9-6-9 all-time in overtime contests.

The Wildcats opened their Big 12 Conference season by taking a bite out of a familiar foe in record-setting style. &nbsp; <a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8597">Adrian Martinez</a>&nbsp;threw for 234 yards and one touchdown and added 21 carries for 148 yards and four touchdowns, while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7993">Deuce Vaughn</a>&nbsp;added 25 carries for 116 yards, as K-State vaulted past No. 6 Oklahoma, 41-34, in front of a sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday. It marked the most points K-State has ever scored in Norman in a series that began in 1908. It also marked the third time in four meetings that K-State, 3-1 and 1-0, beat Oklahoma, 3-1 and 0-1. Daniels passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another, amassing 407 yards of total offense to lead KU. The Lawndale, California, native was 19-for-23 for 324 yards passing and rushed for 83 yards on 11 carries.&nbsp;

For the game, KU posted a season-high 528 yards with 324 yards in the air and 204 on the ground. The Jayhawks improved to 2-0 at home for the first time since the 2013 season. KU also improved to 3-0 in non-conference play for the first time since 2009.&nbsp;

Kansas took the opening drive 74 yards before stalling at the Duke one yard line. The Jayhawks then forced their seventh three-and-out of the season on the next possession.&nbsp;

On its second drive of the game Kansas went up 7-0 on a seven-play, 57-yard drive with Daniels connecting to redshirt-sophomore tight end Trevor Kardell on a six-yard touchdown pass. It was Kardell’s first career TD catch and Daniels’ eighth TD toss of the 2022 season. Duke would tie the contest at 7-7 on the game’s next drive.&nbsp;

Early in the second quarter, Daniels connected on a 73-yard touchdown pass to running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. Hishaw broke three tackles powering his way to the end zone to put the home team up 14-7 with 12:35 before halftime.&nbsp;

Kansas advances to an overall record of 11-3 (1-1 Big 12) while K-State drops to 9-5 (0-1 Big 12).

“I thought we played pretty well in the beginning and then K-State really picked up,” stated head coach Ray Bechard. “In the fifth set, we did a lot of things right and the ball fell our way.”

Junior Kennedy Farris kicked off the match with a kill followed by a kill from redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady to advance KU 2-0. Sophomore London Davis took the Jayhawks to the next level by putting the ball past the Wildcats for a Jayhawk kill. A double block by Elnady and super-senior Rachel Langs moved KU to a 5-1 lead. K-State was able to tie the set up at five, but a service error allowed Kansas to regain the lead 6-5. The Wildcats took the lead 11-9 after blocking sophomore Caroline Bien. A kill by Davis forced a K-State timeout with the Jayhawks ahead 13-11. Coming back from the timeout, Davis added another kill to her tally, moving Kansas to 14-11. 🏐 KU VB: Davis’ Career High Leads Jayhawks to Victory Over K-State

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson found itself in a defensive battle Saturday night against the Red Ravens, who came into the game receiving votes for the Top 15 poll.&nbsp;

The game featured eight turnovers, four by each team.&nbsp;

Hutchinson's four fumbles marked the second straight game the Dragons had to fight through four turnovers in a contest.&nbsp;

Hutchinson began last season as No. 1 and lost on the road at Coffeyville after turning the ball over seven times in a 17-10 decision.&nbsp;

"Credit our defense again," head coach Drew Dallas said. "We just played outstanding on the defensive side of the ball."

The Dragons gave up three points on defense. Coffeyville's lone touchdown came on a defensive scoop-six when Bishop Fitzgerald took a Dragon fumble 15 yards to the house.&nbsp;

Fortunately, Red Raven kicker Forrest Taylor missed a PAT for the first time this season after an errant snap threw off the kick's timing.&nbsp;

Hutchinson took a 7-6 lead into the locker room thanks to a second quarter strike to Malik Benson.&nbsp;

Dylan Laible hit Benson in space and the wide receiver took the ball 54 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;

The first half of the game featured an odd back-and-forth.&nbsp;

Hutchinson started three-and-out. Coffeyville matched with a three-and-out.

Coffeyville fumbled, then Hutchinson fumbled.&nbsp;

Coffeyville held the 9-7 lead late into the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

The Dragons' other Dylan entered the contest late in the third, marking the return of running back Dylan Kedzior from injury. He made his presence known in the fourth.&nbsp;

"Really proud of Dylan (Kedzior) for stepping up when we needed him to," Dallas said. "His legs are fresh and he looked really good."

Kedzior had not played since the week two win at Ellsworth. He finished the game as Hutchinson's leading rusher. He carried the ball 12 times for 85 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

His touchdown with 1:17 remaining put Hutchinson up for good and came on a 2-yard burst to cap a 10-play, 72-yard drive.&nbsp;

Coffeyville took one last shot offensively, but quarterback Isaiah Velez was picked off by Jalik Thomas.&nbsp;

J.R. Martin started the game for Coffeyville at QB. Martin and Velez went a combined 10 of 27 for 78 yards and two interceptions.

The Blue Dragons entered the game averaging 47.7 points per contest.&nbsp;

Off to a 3-0 start to the 2022 season, the Hutchinson Community College football team opens Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday at Coffeyville.

The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons and Red Ravens (receiving votes in the NJCAA Rankings), kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.

Hutchinson starts Jayhawk Conference play with Coffeyville for the third-straight season. The Blue Dragons are the final Jayhawk Conference team to play a conference game this season.

The Blue Dragons and Red Ravens (2-1, 2-1) both come off bye weeks in Week No. 4.

Hutchinson overcame four turnovers, including three in the fourth quarter and defeated No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28 in overtime on Cole Segraves’ 39-yard game-winning field goal. Coffeyville suffered its first loss of the season two weeks ago, falling to Independence 18-5 at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons enter Saturday’s game on a nine-game winning streak dating back to winning the final six games of 2021. That streak ties for the fifth-longest winning streak in program history, matching streaks in 1995 and in 2013-14. A victory on Saturday would tie for the third-longest streak of 10, which was done twice – 1973-74 and 2019-2020/21.

Coffeyville has dominated this series that dates back to 1932. The Red Ravens own a 56-30-4 overall record, but the Blue Dragons have won 12 of the last 14 games with Coffeyville. Last season, the Ravens upset preseason No. 1 Hutchinson 17-10 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Two weeks ago, Blue Dragon quarterback Dylan Laible became Hutchinson’s career passing touchdown leader with 51. Laible, a third-year sophomore from Little Elm, Texas, needed 21 games to break the old record of 50 set by Luke Barnes in 2012 and 2013. Laible is now only 405 yards from behind Hutchinson’s career passing yardage leader.

Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas won his 20th game on the Hutchinson sideline after the overtime victory over Iowa Central. Dallas is now 7-1 all-time against NJCAA Top 10 teams and 9-1 against all ranked opponents.

FB: Dragons head to Coffeyville Saturday

Day 1 of the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic as a mixed bag for the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team on Friday at the Sports Arena.

After dropping the first set to Jefferson College, the Blue Dragons battled to win the next three set and defeat the Vikings 24-26, 25-19, 28-26, 25-21 in the opening match on Friday.

Defending national champion Iowa Western handed the Blue Dragons a four-set loss, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 21-25.

Now 18-6 overall, the Blue Dragons play host to No. 8 Trinity Valley and No. 17 Mineral Area in back-to-back matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively on Saturday.

Both matches on Friday were rematches from earlier matches on opening weekend in August. The Blue Dragons avenged a sweep against Jefferson at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Reivers also exacted some revenge on the Blue Dragons on that same weekend. The Blue Dragons and Reivers now own wins on the other’s home court this season. Hutchinson defeated then No. 1 Iowa Western in five sets in August.

Sophomore Sophie Connor ignited the Blue Dragon comeback after dropping the opening set to Jefferson. Connor had nine kills in the second and third sets without an attack error. She also had three kills in the fourth set. Connor finished with a team-high 12 kills and two blocks.

Freshman Taniya Golden had 11 kills. Sophomore Baylee Miller had nine points and sophomore Blondie Penaflor with five kills and five blocks.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 34 assists and eight digs. Freshman defensive specialist Perrine Blanc had four of Hutchinson’s nine service aces. Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey had 17 digs. Blanc had 12 digs.

Jefferson’s Maureen Matthews had a match-high 17 kills. Jefferson out-blocked Hutchinson 13-7.

Hutchinson let several leads slip away against the Reivers on Friday.

The Dragons led 17-11 and 21-17 in the opening set, only to see Iowa Western win a deuce set with an 8-2 run. Hutch led the second set 17-14 and saw the Reivers reel off 10 points in a row in a set-closing 11-2 run. Hutchinson and Iowa Western were tied at 21-all in the fourth set, but the Reivers scored the final four points of the match.

Hutchinson trailed in the third set 16-14, but rallied with their own 11-2 run to claim the set 25-18.
