NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge became the second-fastest player in major league history to reach 200 career home runs, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 8-2. 

The 6-foot-7 slugger’s 200th homer came in his 671st career game, behind just Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard, who achieved the feat in 2009 in 658 games. 

DJ LeMahieu homered and had an RBI single, and Matt Carpenter homered for the 15th time in 40 games for New York, which won its third straight after dropping a pair of games to the New York Mets. 

The American League-leading Yankees have won seven straight against the Royals and 10 of the last 11.

Naturals win over Surge Friday

WICHITA, Kan. — Coaches from Kansas and Iowa convened at Century II in Wichita Friday to discuss the upcoming football season.&nbsp;

The KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference) and ICCAC (Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) will come together in 2022 after a two-season hiatus because of the pandemic.&nbsp;

Hutchinson was predicted to finish first in the preseason poll, ahead of Garden City and Independence.&nbsp;

Iowa Western was selected to finish first of the three teams from Iowa.&nbsp;

Hutchinson finished 9-2 last year and just missed the NJCAA four-team playoff for the national championship. The Dragons finished No. 5 in the last poll and No. 3 in the final poll.&nbsp;

Drew Dallas led Hutchinson to a national championship in his first season. He knows the talent level across the board will be high once again. "Any of these teams can beat you on any given Saturday," Dallas said.

Independence head coach Jason Martin said two teams from the 10 represented Friday in Wichita had a good chance of being in the four-team playoff at the end of the season.&nbsp;

Iowa Western played for the national championship, but lost to New Mexico Military last year. The Reivers finished 10-1 and No. 2 in the final poll.&nbsp;

Six teams represented in Wichita Friday made the final 15 poll in the NJCAA last season.

Hutchinson opens the season Aug. 27 at home in Gowans Stadium at 1 p.m. against Navarro.&nbsp;

TOPEKA —&nbsp;The state championship dominance of schools like Bishop Miege is at least on the table to be discussed by the State Board of Education and the Kansas Legislature. The State Board of Ed hearing is now scheduled for August 10 at&nbsp;9:20 a.m. and will be held in the boardroom in the Landon Office Building in Topeka.

The classifications from 4A and down voted in favor of a proposed change that would introduce a multiplier for successful private schools that would inflate their enrollment number for classification purposes, 5A and 6A did not vote in favor.

Kansas High Schools voted 216 to 139 to make the change.

Those wishing to testify about the proposal at the hearing, either orally or in writing, must register with Barbara Hughes, the executive secretary of the State Board of Education, by sending an email to <a href="mailto:bhughes@ksde.org">bhughes@ksde.org</a> or a letter to State Board of Education, Landon State Office Building, 900 SW Jackson St., Suite 102, Topeka, Kansas. 🎙 Eagle Radio Sports for Thursday Morning

Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 9-3 on Tuesday night as Cole Sturgeon and Chris Williams each hit homers to power the Surge to a series-opening victory.

Williams put the Surge on the board with a home run in the bottom of the first to give Wichita an early 2-0 lead. Williams finished one for two with two RBIs and two walks in the game.

Simeon Woods-Richardson came in relief in the third inning in his first appearance since June 11th and pitched two scoreless innings and tallied a strikeout before being relieved in the fifth inning.

Sturgeon finished two for three with two walks and three RBIs on the night and busted the game open in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run homer to give Wichita a 5-0 lead.

Wichita scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth featuring a two-run RBI single from Christian Encarnacion-Strand and an RBI double from Andrew Bechtold to extend the lead to 9-1.

The Naturals scored two runs in the top of the ninth behind an RBI single from Maikel Garcia and an RBI sacrifice fly from Sebastian Rivero that shrunk the deficit to 9-3.

The Wind Surge have won seven consecutive home wins.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Angels' Shohei Ohtani fanned on three pitches during his first at-bat against the Royals on Tuesday night.

His next at-bat set the tone for the rest of the game.

The do-everything All-Star sent the third pitch of that at-bat 420 feet to straightaway center field, giving Los Angeles the early lead. The Angels piled on from there, getting a bases-loaded double from Luis Rengifo and a late home run from Max Stassi, while Jose Suarez and their bullpen dominated Kansas City in a 6-0 victory.

Suarez (2-4) scattered three hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings before the Los Angeles bullpen, which was hammered by Kansas City in a series-opening loss, rolled through the same bunch to clinch the Angels' first win since July 13.

They also kept Kansas City from winning four consecutive games for the first time this season.

The Royals' Angel Zerpa (2-1) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk before departing with a right knee injury in the fifth.

Royals shut out Tuesday at home

WICHITA — Darral Willis Jr. hit a bucket to finish off the Elam Ending for the AfterShocks on Monday night, as the Wichita State alumni basketball squad won 70-69 over the North Texas alumni Bleed Green in The Basketball Tournament at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita.

Aftershocks still alive in TBT after Monday win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zack Greinke is getting to the point in his career where it seems as though just about every start brings with it some kind of record, even those that the former Cy Young winner never anticipated seeing.

IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– One of the most decorated players in Kansas men’s basketball history, Ochai Agbaji can add 2021-22 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year to his list of honors as the conference announced its athletes of the year awards Monday. Oklahoma softball player Jocelyn Alo is the league’s 2021-22 female athlete of the year.

Nominees are submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected based on athletic performance during the 2021-22 school year by a media panel. Nominees must be in good academic standing.

"What a great honor to be named this among all the athletes in the Big 12. It is humbling to be listed among Heisman Trophy winners, other national champions and great athletes. This would not be possible without my teammates, coaches and the KU support staff. We had a great run to the national title and it took a lot of people to get there, not just me."

Since the league started in 1996-97, Agbaji is the fourth Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year, with all four being men’s basketball players – Jacque Vaughn in 1997, Nick Collison in 2003 and Frank Mason III, who was a co-recipient in 2017. Historically, Kansas’ Danny Manning (1988) and Rex Walters (1993) were Big Eight Conference Male Athletes of the Year, making Agbaji the sixth KU men’s basketball player to earn the honor. Overall, Agbaji is the ninth Kansas conference athlete of the year honoree joining the aforementioned and Nolan Cromwell, football (1977), Lynette Woodard, women’s basketball (1981) and Tammy Thomas, women’s swimming (1983).

Last month, Agbaji was selected No. 14 by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2022 NBA Draft, becoming the KU’s 18th lottery selection and the 12th in the Bill Self era. The Final Four and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Agbaji was a 2022 Consensus All-America First Team honoree, collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, Associated Press, The Sporting News and USBWA. The Kansas City, Missouri, native is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concluded his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The 88th annual NBC Baseball World Series opens this week at Hobart Detter Field in Hutchinson's Carey Park. &nbsp;Pool play begins Thursday at noon with four games scheduled each day and running from July 28th to July 31st. &nbsp;Then the tournament will move to Wichita to be comped at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

The Hutchinson Monarch's will play on Thursday at 6pm vs Wichita's 316 Elite. &nbsp;Win or lose, their next game would be on Saturday with game time to be decided. The top 2 teams out of pool play will advance based off win-loss records.

NBC World Series to open Thursday in Hutchinson

Tulsa, OK- The Wind Surge fell short in the series finale against the Tulsa Drillers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon behind home runs from Carson Taylor and Jonny DeLuca as the Drillers clinched the Propeller series for the first time.

Carson Taylor got things started for Tulsa as he broke the tie in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to give the Drillers a 1-0 lead. Taylor finished three for three with an RBI in the afternoon.

Tulsa scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a home run from Jonny DeLuca to extend the Drillers lead to 3-0.

Kyle Hurt got the start on the mound for Tulsa and pitched four scoreless innings and allowed four hits and recorded seven strikeouts before being revived in the fifth inning. The Drillers bullpen pitched five scoreless innings as Keegan Curtis earned his second win on the year. 

The Wind Surge will resume action on Tuesday; June 26th for a six-game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Hutchinson then will prepare for the National Baseball Congress at Hobart-Detter Field starting on Thursday. Their first opponent will be a familiar one, as they play 316 Elite at 6 p.m. Thursday. The full schedule is below.

Monarchs lose Sunday, look ahead to NBC Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Virginia Tech outfielder Gavin Cross wasted little time getting to Kansas City after being drafted No. 9 overall by the Royals on Day 1 of the Draft. The club on Saturday announced its deal with Cross, whose bonus is worth $5,202,900, the full slot value for the No. 9 pick, according to MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis. Cross, a left-handed power hitter, became the highest pick in Virginia Tech history and can play all three spots in the outfield.

Some of the Royals’ Draft picks, including Louisville outfielder Levi Usher (10th round), Maryland lefty Ryan Ramsey (13th round) and Walden Grove (Ariz.) High School outfielder Milo Rushford (18th round), have said they plan on signing with the club, but they still need to complete physicals and paperwork before it becomes official. Several are heading to the Royals’ Spring Training facility in Arizona this weekend to do so.
