WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Led by Jaron Pierre Jr.'s 15 points, the Wichita State Shockers defeated the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 71-48 on Tuesday night. The Shockers are now 6-4 on the season, while the Delta Devils fell to 1-10.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kevin Obanor scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, De’Vion Harmon had 19 points and six steals and Texas Tech held off Eastern Washington 77-70. Texas Tech (7-2) extended its home winning streak to 27 games — with its last loss coming on Feb. 9, 2021. Steele Venters banked in a 3-pointer to pull EWU within 61-59 left but Texas Tech freshman Pop Isaacs answered with a 3-pointer and Harmon dunked it to rebuild a seven-point lead. Harmon made a layup while being fouled and missed the free throw with two minutes left, but Texas Tech secured the rebound and Obanor made two free throws for a 72-65 lead. Isaacs finished with 15 points for Texas Tech.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Free agent left-hander Ryan Yarbrough has signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals after spending the past five seasons with Tampa Bay. The 30-year-old Yarbrough was 3-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games last season, making nine starts. He twice was on the injured list with groin tightness and a strained oblique. Yarbrough was 40-31 with a 4.33 ERA in 127 games, including 59 starts, for the Rays. He was 16-6 as a rookie in 2018. He was 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA in eight postseason games. Yarbrough played college ball at Old Dominion, where new Royals manager Matt Quatraro and Kansas City infielder Vinnie Pasquantino also went to school.

UNDATED (AP) — Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach has died following complications from a heart condition. The pioneering coach helped revolutionize the college football passing game with the Air Raid offense. Leach had been hospitalized over the weekend and had a bout of pneumonia late this season. He died Monday night. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six. Mike Leach was 61.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The streets of Argentina have turned into a party as the national team beat Croatia by a comfortable 3-0 and earned this soccer-crazed South American country a spot in the World Cup final. Fans poured out onto the streets of the capital of Buenos Aires as soon as the match ended, with people waving Argentina flags out of their cars and people took over whole streets as they jumped and sang in joy amid a sea of wearing the national team’s jersey. Earlier, Buenos Aires had come to a standstill as fans packed cafes, restaurants and public plazas, where giant screens showed exploits of the Lionel Messi-led national team.

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — As Morocco faces France in the World Cup semifinal, many players and fans of both diverse teams grapple with family tales of colonial history, challenges of immigration, and questions of national loyalty. The match has political and emotional resonance for both nations. It dredges up everything that’s complicated about the relationship in which France still wields considerable influence. For many in the former protectorate, the match against the defending champion is an opportunity to show that Morocco is a formidable foe — on the soccer pitch at least. That's even though immigration between the two countries has blurred the lines for many in France and in Morocco about who to support Wednesday in Qatar.

Sports Headlines for Wednesday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — No. 1 Hutchinson (11-0) is set for a rematch with No. 3 Iowa Western (8-2) Wednesday in War Memorial Stadium for the national championship.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/c2201c10-d364-4ddc-b1e6-739f9c5ec889">The two teams met in the regular-season finale in a matchup for the ages. Hutchinson blocked a punt late in the fourth quarter and returned it for a touchdown to win 29-28 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Nov. 12.</a>

Iowa Western (the then-No. 4 team in the nation) moved up to No. 3 despite the loss as the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the nation also fell in the same week.

The Reivers earned a spot in the round-of-four playoff and beat NW Mississippi Dec. 4 in Senatobia, Mississippi.

Meanwhile, the Dragons rematched KJCCC-rival Coffeyville (No. 4) on Dec. 3. Hutchinson gained a slight 10-7 halftime lead before cruising to 38-7 victory.

This is Hutchinson's second trip to the national championship game in three seasons. The Dragons won a program-first title in the spring-shortened season of 2021.

Pollsters left Hutchinson out of the top four playoff one season ago as the Dragons were slapped in the face with a No. 5 final-season ranking one year ago (fall of 2021).

Meanwhile, Iowa Western (last fall's No. 1) played in the national championship last fall, but lost to No. 2 New Mexico Military 31-13.

Because of the pandemic and shortened season of 2020-2021 (championship played in spring of 2021), both teams actually played for a national title one year ago — Hutchinson in the spring and Iowa Western in the fall.

The Shockers (6-4) forced 23 Delta Devil turnovers while committing just three to finish at +20. It's the&nbsp;largest margin this season in a game involving two NCAA Division I schools. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High Salthawk basketball teams overcame slow starts to win over Salina South Tuesday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.

In the girls contest, Hutchinson trailed 10-1 after one quarter before bouncing back to lead 21-16 at the break 36-24 after three and win 44-28.

The Salthawks were paced by Grace Posch's 14 points, Josie McLean added 13. Salina South did not have any double figure scorers in the girls game.

On the boys side, it didn't take the Salthawks an entire quarter to get going, but they did lead by only six after one 16-10, then got the game sped up even more, especially right before halftime and led 36-21 at the break, stretched the game out to 59-34 after three and finished with a running clock in an 80-39 triumph.

The Salthawks had four in double figures, led by Terrell King's 12 points, Garrett Robertson had 11 and Dauntay King and Jay Lewis had ten each.

Salina South was paced by Jace Humphrey's 14 points, Layson Sajdak added 10 in the loss.

Hutchinson improves to 3-0 for both squads and visits Goddard on Friday night. The 3-0 start for the boys is the first time since the 2003-2004 season.

🏀 MBB: Dragons win second straight

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Blue Dragons had zero problems with Colby Monday night in the Sports Arena.

Colby (1-12, 0-8) has now lost 12 straight games.

Hutchinson held Colby to 2 of 13 shooting (15.4%) in the first quarter.

The Dragons (11-4, 5-4) took a commanding 42-15 lead into halftime.

Morgan Browning led the Dragons with 10 points at the break. She finished 13 points and five assists.

Hutchinson had five players score in double digits.

Monae Duffy and Journey Armstead led the way with 15 points each. Duffy had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Kali Howard and Mya Williams each added 10.

Colby got a boost from Aaliyah Chambers, who paced her team with 22 points on 9 of 24 shooting.

STARKVILLE, MS(AP) —Mike Leach, the gruff, pioneering and unfiltered college football coach who helped revolutionize the passing game with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-college-football-sports-mike-leach-texas-dc84b9b6c1f92acb64d1c5f37f82dd59">the Air Raid offense,</a>&nbsp;has died following complications from a heart condition, Mississippi State said Tuesday. He was 61.

Leach, who was in his third season as head coach at Mississippi State, fell ill Sunday at his home in Starkville, Mississippi. He was treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) away.

“Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather. He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity," the family said in a statement issued by Mississippi State. "We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our beloved husband and father’s life.”

Leach fought through a bout with pneumonia late in this season, coughing uncontrollably at times during news conferences, but seemed to be improving, according to those who worked with him.

News of him falling gravely ill swept through college football the past few days and left many who knew him stunned,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Holgorsendana/status/1602140964742696961">hoping and praying</a>&nbsp;for Leach's recovery under grim circumstances.

His impact on college football over the last two decades runs deep and will continue for years to come.

Leach was known for his pass-happy offenses, wide-ranging interests — he wrote a book about Native American leader Geronimo, had a passion for pirates, a taught a class about insurgent warfare — and rambling, off-the-cuff news conferences.

Leach’s teams were consistent winners at programs where success did not come easy. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. And his quarterbacks put up massive passing statistics, running a relatively simple offense called the Air Raid that he did not invent but certainly mastered.

An interview with Leach was as likely to veer off into politics, wedding planning or hypothetical mascot fights as it was to stick to football. He considered Donald Trump a friend before the billionaire businessman ran for president and then campaigned for him in 2016.

He traveled all over the world and his curiosity knew no bounds. He most appreciated those who stepped outside of their expertise.

“One of the biggest things I admire about Michael Jordan, he got condemned a lot for playing baseball. I completely admired that,” Leach told The Associated Press last spring. “I mean, you’re gonna be dead in 100 years anyway. You’ve mastered basketball and you’re gonna go try to master something else, and stick your neck out and you’re not afraid to do it, and know that a lot of people are gonna be watching you while you do it. I thought it was awesome.”

As much as Leach enjoyed digging into topics other than football, he was excellent at the Xs and Os.

Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six.

Calling plays from a folded piece of paper smaller than an index card, Leach turned passers such as B.J. Symons (448.7 yards per game), Graham Harrell (438.8), Connor Halliday (430.3) and Anthony Gordon (429.2) into record-setters and Heisman Trophy contenders.

“You have to make choices and limit what you’re going to teach and what you’re going to do. That’s the hard part,” Leach told the AP about the Air Raid’s economical playbook.

Purdue moves to No. 1 in AP Top 25, Alabama cracks top 5

Purdue has climbed to No. 1 in men's basketball AP Top 25 for the second straight season. The Boilermakers moved up three spots in this week's poll. Virginia moved up to No. 2, with Connecticut, Alabama and Houston rounding out the top five. The Crimson Tide have their second top-five ranking in three seasons after becoming the second team to beat two No. 1 teams in the same season. Alabama knocked off Houston last week after beating North Carolina earlier in the season.

Purdue picked up wins over West Virginia, No. 15 Gonzaga and No. 12 Duke in consecutive weeks to win the Phil Knight Legacy tournament earlier in the season.

Wins over Hofstra and Nebraska last week, combined with a loss by Houston, were enough to move the Boilermakers to No. 1 the AP Top 25 for the second straight season.

Purdue moved up three spots in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll released on Monday, receiving 27 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel. No. 2 Virginia received 19 first-place votes to move up a spot, No. 3 Connecticut received 15 and No. 6 Tennessee also got one.

Alabama and Houston rounded out the top five.

Purdue (10-0, 2-0 Big Ten) has made a steady climb after being unranked in the preseason, moving up to No. 5 by winning the Legacy tourney in Oregon. The Boilermakers were No. 4 last week, then blew out Hofstra and scratched out a 65-62 overtime win over Nebraska despite poor shooting and a quiet scoring afternoon by 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey.

"Can you can you find a way to win a game when you don't shoot the ball well? We were able to do that," Purdue coach Matt Painter said.

The Boilermakers hope this run at No. 1 will last longer than their last one. Purdue went to No. 1 for the first time in school history in Week 4 last season and promptly lost to Rutgers.

Alabama had to replace three of its top four scorers and started the season without dynamic guard Jahvon Quinerly while he recovers from knee surgery.

None of it has slowed the Crimson Tide's ride to a second top-five ranking in three seasons.

Alabama knocked North Carolina off its top-ranked perch in four overtimes on Nov. 27 and became the second team — with Oklahoma in 1990 — to beat two No. 1 teams in the same season with its 71-65 win over Houston on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide moved up four spots in this week's poll.

"Huge program win," Alabama coach Nate Oats said. "Not sure how many teams get the chance to play two No. 1 teams in nonconference, let alone beat them, but I think that shows where we've gotten this program to that we can play with anyone in the country at this point."

No. 17 Mississippi State had the biggest jump in the poll, moving up six spots after beating Minnesota.

No. 19 Auburn had the biggest drop, losing eight spots following an 82-73 loss to Memphis. No. 20 Maryland dropped with consecutive losses to No. 22 Wisconsin and No. 6 Tennessee.

No. 7 Texas lost a chance to move up to No. 1 after its overtime loss to Illinois, dropping five spots instead.

No. 22 Wisconsin moved into the poll for the first time this season following wins over Maryland and Iowa. No. 24 Virginia Tech is ranked for the first time since 2020-21 after wins over Dayton and Oklahoma State.

No. 25 Miami beat Cornell and North Carolina State to get ranked for the first time since 2017-18.

Creighton dropped out of the poll after reaching No. 7 earlier this season. The Bluejays, ranked 21st last week, have lost four straight.

Iowa State dropped out from No. 20 after a lopsided loss to Iowa while San Diego State fell out from No. 22 after losing to Saint Mary's in Phoenix.

The Southeastern and Big Ten conferences led the way with six ranked teams each. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12 had four each and the Pac-12 three.

The Big East, American Athletic and West Coast conferences had one ranked team each.

The Chiefs won 34-28 and the Broncos lost quarterback Russell Wilson to a concussion. Mahomes threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs improved to 10-3. He led a clock-chewing drive after L'Jarius Sneed's interception of Brett Rypien's pass late in the fourth quarter. Rypien came in after Wilson was knocked out of the game early in the fourth quarter. Wilson got hurt at the end of a 14-yard scramble to the Kansas City 2-yard line.

The Chargers moved into position for the final AFC playoff berth, ahead of the New York Jets. Herbert completed a career-high 39 passes on 51 attempts for his 21st 300-yard game. He became the first NFL quarterback to throw for 13,000 yards in his first three seasons. Tyreek Hill scored two touchdowns for the Dolphins, one of them on an improbable fumble recovery. But Tagovailoa had his worst game as an NFL starter, completing 10 of 28 passes for 145 yards.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles are going to the playoffs for the second straight year and the fifth time in six seasons. The league's best team improved to 12-1 on Sunday with a 48-22 thrashing of the New York Giants. MVP candidate Jalen Hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Eagles opened a 21-0 lead and never looked back. Miles Sanders ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles finished with seven sacks, including three by Brandon Graham. The Giants have one win in their past six games, going 1-4-1 in that span. This was New York's worst loss under first-year coach Brian Daboll.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson scored 18 points to lead seven in double figures and Kansas State routed Incarnate Word 98-50. AMES, Iowa (AP) — Aljaz Kunc scored 21 points and No. 20 Iowa State broke away in the second half to beat McNeese State 77-40. DENVER (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs own the Denver Broncos — even when Patrick Mahomes throws three interceptions and a 27-0 lead turns into a nail-biter.

Mahomes counterbalanced his mistakes with a trio of touchdown passes and the Chiefs (10-3) outlasted the Broncos 34-28 on Sunday. Russell Wilson left with a concussion early in the fourth quarter as Denver (3-10) lost to Kansas City for the 14th consecutive time.

“Just three bad decisions,” Mahomes said. “Luckily for me, the rest of the team stepped up. Defense made a lot of stops in some critical moments when we were putting them in some bad situations. Even my special teams. (Punter) Tommy (Townsend) flipped the field a couple of times for us.”

Mahomes improved to 10-0 against Denver, becoming the fourth QB to ever beat one team 10 times without a loss. The Chiefs reached double digits in wins for the eighth straight season and they inched closer to their seventh consecutive AFC West crown.

The Broncos, well, they came up short again and lost a one-score game for the seventh time this season under rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett.

"We never finish the way we want to," Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy said after a career-best&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1602071004746223616">three-touchdown</a>&nbsp;day, “but the one thing I can say for sure is that we never quit.”

The Broncos, who have lost five straight overall and eight consecutive AFC West games for the first time since divisional play began with the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, turned their 27-0 deficit into a ballgame by scoring three touchdowns over a 3 1/2-minute stretch spanning halftime.

Rypien had a chance to put the Broncos ahead following linebacker Josey Jewell's second interception of the game with just under six minutes left. But Rypien was hit by Chris Jones just as he released a deep throw toward Jeudy, and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed picked off the high pass with 4:21 remaining.

A personal foul on Frank Clark after that interception pushed the Chiefs back to their 15-yard line, but Mahomes &amp; Co. chewed up the rest of the clock, never letting the Broncos get another crack at the upset.

Mahomes threw for 352 yards and one of his three touchdowns was a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1602057078000201729">no-look hook pass</a>&nbsp;to Jerick McKinnon, who had two TD catches.

Mahomes was scrambling for a first down when he shook defensive lineman D.J. Jones and flung a pass across his body to a wide-open McKinnon, who raced down Denver's dejected sideline for a 56-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

“I was committed to running,” Mahomes said, “and I saw I was about to get hit like I did last week in Cincinnati, so I just kind of flicked it. I was just trying to get it to him whatever way possible.”

Mahomes and McKinnon connected on a more traditional 10-yard TD on Kansas City's next possession. At that point, Mahomes had 224 passing yards to Wilson's 33, but things would get even worse for Denver's scuffling quarterback before they got better.

On fourth-and-2 at his own 45-yard line, Wilson tried to throw a screen pass to Brandon Johnson but didn't get it high enough. “I was an athlete all through high school,” Gay said, “so I knew I was going to be able to get that.”

His pick-6 put the Chiefs in charge at 27-0 with 4:32 left in the half.

Jeudy caught his first two touchdown passes, from 18 and 5 yards out, after Mahomes uncharacteristically threw interceptions — to Josey Jewell and Patrick Surtain II — on consecutive possessions, making it 27-14 at the half.

On the opening drive after halftime, running back&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1602076235122630658">Marlon Mack</a>&nbsp;caught a short pass from Wilson and raced 66 yards for the end zone to pull Denver within 27-21.

Mahomes countered with a 4-yard TD strike to JuJu Smith-Schuster.

“Luckily we got the win,” Mahomes said. “But you don't win a lot of games when you've got three interceptions.”

By improving to 10-0 against the Broncos, Mahomes joined Andrew Luck, who started 11-0 against the Titans; Tom Brady, who went 10-0 against the Falcons; and John Elway, who won his first 10 against the Patriots.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Mahomes had a difficult day connecting, but coach Andy Reid said, “you've got to give a couple of shout-outs to Kelce” after he caught four passes (out of nine targets) for 71 yards.

That made Kelce the first tight end in NFL history to record seven straight 1,000-yard seasons, and he became the fifth tight end to top 10,000 yards, joining Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates and Shannon Sharpe.

“Honestly," Kelce said, “right now the winning means more than any of those stats.”

Broncos LG Dalton Risner (back) missed his first game of the year. RB Mike Boone (ankle) and WR Kendall Hinton (hamstring) couldn’t finish.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas Women’s Basketball improved to 9-0 Sunday afternoon, defeating Wichita State in convincing fashion 72-52 at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks are now 9-0 for just the fourth time in program history and first time since opening the 2019-20 season 11-0.

The 20-point rout over Wichita State is good for Kansas’ seventh-straight win over an opponent by 20 or more points. The last time the Jayhawks had a seven-game streak with a winning margin of 20+ points came in 1980.

On Sunday, Kansas was led by the senior duo of Zakiyah Franklin and Holly Kersgieter, who both poured in 16 points against the Shockers. Chandler Prater also added 10 points and four rebounds, while Taiyanna Jackson posted seven points and 13 rebounds.

Kansas was very efficient on the defensive end of the court, grabbing 15 steals and seven blocks as a team. The Jayhawks’ 15 steals are a season-high and the most since Dec. 5, 2018, against Nebraska. Prater and Kersgieter each had four steals, while Franklin had three and Sanna Strom had two. Jackson also tied her season-high in blocks with five.

Both teams came out slow, but Kansas gained control of the lead late in the first quarter, 13-7. A three-pointer from Franklin sparked offense for the Jayhawks, resulting in a buzzer-beating layup from Kersgieter to end the first.

The Jayhawks held the Shockers to just seven points, the second time this season Kansas has held a team to less than 10 points in the first quarter (Dec. 4, 2022, vs. Southeast Missouri State).

Kansas led by eight, 31-23, at the half after an offensive second quarter. The Jayhawks kept busy on the defensive end, forcing 10 turnovers. Prater grabbed three steals and Franklin notched two. Jackson pulled in seven points and seven boards, leading both teams at the half individually.

Kersgieter caught fire right out of halftime, producing eight points for the Jayhawks. Franklin put up 11 points in the third and cashed in on a corner three-pointer for her second of the quarter. The game switched gears in the second half, with Franklin and Kersgieter both reaching double figure scoring in the third quarter to give Kansas a 19-point lead into the fourth.

Nadira Eltayeb scored her first points in the fourth, converting on an and-one left-hook in the paint to put Kansas up 63-43. The Jayhawks outscored the Shockers 41-29 in the second half to close out the game 72-52.
