KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy is reported to be leaving for the Washington Commanders.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Friday that Bieniemy is finalizing a deal to be the new offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The deal is expected to be official by Saturday, Rapoport noted.

🎙 Napier named KIAAA Sportscaster of the year

HAYSVILLE, Kan.—The Hutch High basketball teams wrapped up their final regular season road trip in fitting fashion on Friday night with a sweep of Haysville-Campus. The Salthawk Girls won 46-17 while the Hutch Boys let a run away game get interesting late in the fourth quarter before closing it out to remain undefeated with a 79-67 win over the Colts.

The Salthawk girls dominated Campus in about every phase of the game Friday night by establishing a big lead early in the first quarter 20 to 3. Then extended their lead at the half to lead 33 to 7.&nbsp; The Salthawks finished the game with a running clock to win their 14th game of the season 46 to 17.

Hutchinson had a balanced scoring attack, led by Josie McLean's 10 points. Super Sophomore Aliyah Green scored 9 followed by Grace Posch's 8 points including 2 treys in the game. Ayanna Green added 4 points with Kaia Smith, Libby Jackson and Mya Thompson adding 3 apiece.&nbsp; Hannah Ames, Kyndra Gaines and Azariah Dawes scored 2 each for the Salthawk girls in the win.

Campus was led by in scoring by Mya Free and Brylie Laake with 4 points each.

Hutchinson will host Derby next Tuesday at the SAC in Hutchinson.

The undefeated Salthawk Boys again jumped out to a huge lead in the first half vs Campus to lead at halftime, 51 to 26. However, Hutchinson allowed Campus to chip away at the big lead ending the third quarter leading 67 to 47.&nbsp; Campus got hot in the final quarter and managed to hold Hutch to only free throws and Nic Lange's two field goals to cut the lead to 9 on a late possession before Hutchinson closed it out to win by a 79-67 final score.

Hutchinson's Wade Meyer scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half with three triples to lead Hutch in scoring. Garrett Robertson had a solid night with 18. Sophomore Terrell King and Senior Nic Lange both had 12. Dauntay King had 7 points all in the second half. Julian Smith came off the bench to score 4. Bradyn Rodriquez added 2 along with Devon Spiller with 2 points to round out the scoring.

Hutchinson (18-0) clinched the AVCTL Div. 1 Championship and returns home to close out the season on Tuesday against Derby and Newton on Friday.&nbsp; 

Tuesday is Pack the SAC night with the public being asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Reno County Food Bank. Hutch Elementary students will receive a free Salthawk Basketball T-Shirt upon admission.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods had some explaining to do in the Genesis Invitational. Not only did a bad day putting give him a 74 and place him on the verge of missing the cut, some chauvinistic humor went viral as well. Social media zoomed on video of Woods handing Justin Thomas a tampon during the opening round after Woods hit it farther than Thomas off the tee. Woods apologized if anyone was offended. He said it was meant as a joke with Thomas. As for his golf, Woods finished with three bogeys on his last four holes and was outside the cut line when he finished.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Homa is leading the Genesis Invitational. That used to be a big deal to the guy who grew up in the area. Now it feels normal because Homa is playing so well. Already a two-time winner this season, he had a 68 for a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm, Keith Mitchell and Lee Hodges. Tiger Woods will be around for the weekend, just barely. The Jets are looking for a veteran quarterback to lead their offense after Zach Wilson struggled mightily after being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Washington Commanders are finalizing terms of a deal with Eric Bieniemy to hire the longtime Kansas City Chiefs assistant as their offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. That's according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been competed. Bieniemy spent the past five seasons as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. They won the Super Bowl twice in that time. Bieniemy has interviewed for numerous head coaching jobs. But coach Andy Reid calling plays for Kansas City appeared to hurt Bieniemy's stock. He's now set to get the chance to call plays for Washington and run every aspect of its offense under Ron Rivera.

Qatar-based bid for Man United confirmed on deadline day

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — A Qatar-based bid for Manchester United has been confirmed with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani promising to rid the iconic soccer club of debt and return it to its former glories. Sheikh Jassim is the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank and has submitted a 100% offer to buy out current owners the Glazer family. Friday was the final day for serious bidders to step forward in the race to buy the club. The Glazer family bought United for about $1.4 billion in 2005. BBC Sport says it understands that British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos had also made a bid and met the deadline. There's been no official confirmation from Ineos.

Gasol, Nowitzki, Parker, Popovich among Hoop Hall finalists

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker are all one step closer to basketball immortality. The three international greats were among the list of Class of 2023 finalists unveiled Friday by the Basketball Hall of Fame, putting them on the doorstep of enshrinement this summer. Also on that list was Gregg Popovich, the winningest coach in NBA history with the San Antonio Spurs, and Dwyane Wade, part of three championship teams with the Miami Heat. The other finalists are Olympic champion and world champion Jennifer Azzi, six-time WNBA All-Star and WNBA championship-winning coach Becky Hammon; and longtime coaches Gary Blair, Gene Bess, David Hixon, Gene Keady and Marian Washington.

MERIBEL, France (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin took the lead with her first run of the slalom at the world championships Saturday. Shiffrin opened the race in 52.54 seconds. Swiss skier Wendy Holdener trailed by 0.19 seconds in second place. Laurence St-Germain of Canada was 0.61 behind in third. The rest of the field had more than nine-tenths of a second to make up in the second leg. Shiffrin is after her third medal at these worlds after winning gold in the giant slalom two days ago and silver in the super-G last week.

Ghana soccer player Christian Atsu dies in Turkey earthquake

Christian Atsu, the Ghana international forward who played for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle, has died in the earthquake in Turkey. He was 31. His manager said Saturday that search teams recovered Atsu's body in the ruins of a luxury 12-story building where he had been living in the city of Antakya, Hatay province. Murat Uzunmehmet told private news agency DHA, "Atsu's lifeless body was found under the rubble." Atsu joined Turkish club Hatayspor in September. Antakya, the city where Hatayspor is based, is in the southern region of Turkey hardest hit by the earthquake. The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude quake on Feb. 6 in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria passed 43,000 on Friday.

Salina Liberty's head coach is Heron O'Neil. This season is his sixth season with the Salina Liberty. O'Neil led Salina Liberty to the 2022 championship. He is the second winningest coach in the Champions Indoor Football league.&nbsp;

Spectators who haven't witnessed indoor football, should prepare for an action packed thrill ride said Salina Liberty team owner, Dan Mendicina.

"Indoor football is exhilarating, and definitely more fast paced than outdoor football," Mendicina said. "When you attend one of the Salina Liberty games you will feel like you're on the field itself, it is that action packed and fun to watch."&nbsp;

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Commissioner Rob Manfred says Major League Baseball can produce games digitally in conjunction with MLB.TV if Bally Sports regional networks are no longer broadcasting them. He says this is a chance to address the game blackouts that inspire so much anger among fans. Diamond Sports Group is the parent company of 19 Bally Sports networks. It skipped about $140 million in interest payments due Wednesday, starting a 30-day grace period that could be the prelude to a bankruptcy filing. Manfred acknowledged some teams could be at risk of losing revenue. He says MLB is prepared to help those teams.

MERIBEL, France (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin won the gold medal in the women’s giant slalom at the world championships. Shiffrin held on to her first-run lead to beat Italian skier Federica Brignone by 0.12 seconds. Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway took bronze. It’s Shiffrin’s seventh world title and 13th medal overall from 16 career world championship races. Shiffrin’s victory came a day after an unexpected split with longtime coach Mike Day. Shiffrin was the 2018 Olympic champion in the event and won five of the last six giant slaloms on the World Cup circuit. The victory makes her only the fourth female skier to win world titles in four different disciplines.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested and charged with choking his fiancee and fired less than a month later when the university said he was “unfit” to lead the program. Now the third-degree felony charge is dismissed, and so is the threat of up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors announced that after reviewing the evidence and the fiancee's wishes not to prosecute they likely could not get a conviction. Domestic violence experts say prosecutors had little room to maneuver without a cooperative witness.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma is in the midst of one of the most dominant runs ever in women's college softball. The Sooners have won five of the past nine national titles. They could add another rare accolade this season by becoming the first program since UCLA from 1988 to 1990 to win three consecutive titles. Even without super slugger Jocelyn Alo, the career home run leader, the Sooners are favored to win it all again. UCLA should be among the top challengers. It's building on a yearslong push prioritized by influential business and political leaders like Jazz owner Ryan Smith. Utah still proudly celebrates its history as a predominantly Mormon state, but it also tries to market itself as a visitor-friendly hub for businesses and tourists. Yet such mainstreaming efforts could face challenges as the deeply religious, predominantly-white state doubles down on socially conservative stances on matters of race, gender and sports.

NEW YORK (AP) — The famed broadcaster and former St. Louis Cardinals star Tim McCarver has died. He was 81. During 60 years in major league baseball, McCarver played in two All-Star games and on two World Series championship teams. He was the preferred catcher for Bob Gibson in the 1960s and Steve Carlton in the 1970s. He later had a long run as one of the country’s most recognizable, incisive and talkative television commentators. For years, he teamed with Joe Buck on Fox sports telecasts. The Baseball Hall of Fame honored his on-air work in 2012.

It was also the Shockers' first Liacouras Center victory, albeit on just their third try, due to a combination of unbalanced schedules and COVID-19. Nationally-ranked WSU teams fell in 2018 and 2020. Temple (14-13, 8-6) used a 13-0 run to forge ahead 62-58 at the 6:23-mark of the second half but missed eight straight nine of its last 10 shots. The Shockers scored the next 15 points to take control. 🏈 CHIEFS: Kelce to host SNL in March

NEW YORK — Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame 
broadcaster who during 60 years in baseball won two World Series titles 
with the St. Louis Cardinals and had a long run as the one of the 
country's most recognized, incisive and talkative television 
commentators, died Thursday. He was 81.

McCarver's death was 
announced by baseball's Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday 
morning due to heart failure in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with 
his family.

Among the few players to appear in major league games 
during four decades, McCarver was a two-time All Star who worked closely
 with two future Hall of Fame pitchers: The tempestuous Bob Gibson, whom
 McCarver caught for St. Louis in the 1960s, and the introverted Steve 
Carlton, McCarver's fellow Cardinal in the '60s and a Philadelphia 
Phillies teammate in the 1970s.

He switched to television soon 
after retiring in 1980 and called 24 World Series for ABC, CBS and Fox, a
 record for a baseball analyst on television.

“I think there is a 
natural bridge from being a catcher to talking about the view of the 
game and the view of the other players,” McCarver told the Hall in 2012,
 the year he and Joe Buck were given the Ford C. Frick Award for 
excellence in broadcasting. “It is translating that for the viewers. One
 of the hard things about television is staying contemporary and keeping
 it simple for the viewers.”

McCarver became best known to 
national audiences for his 18-year partnership on Fox with play-by-play 
man Buck. McCarver moved to Fox in 1996 when it began televising 
baseball and called his final World Series in 2013.

“I learned 
really fast that if you were in his inner circle, he would be a fierce 
defender of you and for you,” Buck said Thursday. "He taught me how to 
deal with criticism because he had been criticized, his whole broadcast 
career. And sometimes it was because he was a teacher of the game. If 
some player or manager didn’t manage or play the way he thought the game
 should be played, he let a national audience know it. He was always the
 first one in the clubhouse the next day. If that person had something 
to say back to him, he would engage and stood his ground, but it was 
fair.

“He taught me a lot about the game, but he taught me as much or more about how to broadcast on a on a national level.”

Commissioner
 Rob Manfred said in a statement that McCarver was “a respected teammate
 and one of the most influential voices our game has known.”

Six 
feet tall and solidly built, McCarver was a policeman’s son from 
Memphis, who got into more than a few fights while growing up but was 
otherwise playing baseball and football and imitating popular 
broadcasters, notably the Cardinals’ Harry Caray. He was signed while 
still in high school by the Cardinals for $75,000, a generous offer for 
that time; just 17 when he debuted for them in 1959 and in his early 20s
 when he became the starting catcher.

McCarver attended segregated
 schools in Memphis and often spoke of the education he received as a 
newcomer in St. Louis. His teammates included Gibson and outfielder Curt
 Flood, Black players who did not hesitate to confront or tease 
McCarver. When McCarver used racist language against a Black child 
trying to jump a fence during spring training, Gibson would remember 
“getting right up in McCarver’s face.” McCarver liked to tell the story 
about drinking an orange soda during a hot day in spring training and 
Gibson asking him for some, then laughing when McCarver flinched.

“It
 was probably Gibby more than any other Black man who helped me to 
overcome whatever latent prejudices I may have had,” McCarver wrote in 
his 1987 memoir “Oh, Baby, I Love It!”

Few catchers were strong 
hitters during the ’60s, but McCarver batted .270 or higher for five 
consecutive seasons and was fast enough to become the first in his 
position to lead the league in triples. He had his best year in 1967 
when he hit .295 with 14 home runs, finishing second for NL Most 
Valuable Player behind teammate Orlando Cepeda as the Cardinals won 
their second World Series in four years.

McCarver met Carlton when
 the left-hander was a rookie in 1965 “with an independent streak wider 
than the Grand Canyon,” McCarver later wrote. The two initially clashed,
 even arguing on the mound during games, but became close and were 
reunited in the 1970s after both were traded to Philadelphia. McCarver 
became Carlton’s designated catcher even though he admittedly had a 
below average throwing arm and overall didn’t compare defensively to the
 Phillies’ regular catcher, Gold Glover Bob Boone.

“Behind every 
successful pitcher, there has to be a very smart catcher, and Tim 
McCarver is that man,” Carlton said during his Hall of Fame induction 
speech in 1994. “Timmy forced me pitch inside. Early in my career I was 
reluctant to pitch inside. Timmy had a way to remedy this. He used to 
set up behind the hitter. There was just the umpire there; I couldn’t 
see him (McCarver), so I was forced to pitch inside.”

McCarver 
liked to joke that he and Carlton were so in synch in the field that 
when both were dead they would be buried 60 feet, 6 inches apart, the 
distance between the rubber on the pitching mound and home plate.

During
 a 21-year career, when he also played briefly for the Montreal Expos 
and Boston Red Sox, McCarver batted .271 and only twice struck out more 
than 40 times in a season. In the postseason, he averaged .273 and had 
his best outing in the 1964 World Series, when the Cardinals defeated 
the New York Yankees in seven games. McCarver finished 11 for 23, with 
five walks, and his 3-run homer at Yankee Stadium in the 10th inning of 
Game 5 gave his team a 5-2 victory.

Younger baseball fans first 
knew him from his work in the broadcast booth, whether local games for 
the New York Mets, Yankees, Philadelphia and San Francisco, as Jack 
Buck’s partner on CBS (1990-91) or with son Joe Buck for Fox from 
1996-2013. McCarver won six Emmys and became enough of a brand name to 
be a punchline on “Family Guy”; write a handful of books, make cameos in
 “Naked Gun,” “Love Hurts” and other movies and even record an album, 
“Tim McCarver Sings Songs from the Great American Songbook.”

Knowledge
 was his trademark. In his spare time, he visited art museums, read 
books and could recite poetry from memory. At work, he was like a 
one-man scouting team, versed in the most granular details, and spent 
hours preparing before each game. At times, he seemed to have psychic 
powers. In Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, the score was tied at 2 
between the Yankees and Arizona, and New York drew in its infield with 
the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth. Mariano Rivera 
was facing Luis Rodriquez.

“Rivera throws inside to left-handers,”
 McCarver observed. “Left-handers get a lot of broken-bat hits into 
shallow outfield, the shallow part of the outfield. That’s the danger of
 bringing the infield in with a guy like Rivera on the mound.”

Moments later, Gonzalez’s bloop to short center field drove in the winning run.

“When
 you the consider the pressure of the moment,” ESPN’s Keith Olbermann 
told The New York Times in 2002, “the time he had to say it and the 
accuracy, his call was the sports-announcing equivalent of Bill 
Mazeroski’s home run in the seventh inning to defeat the Yankees in 
1960.”

Many found McCarver informative and entertaining. Others 
thought him infuriating. McCarver did not cut himself short whether 
explaining baseball strategy or taking on someone’s performance on the 
field. “When you ask him the time, (he) will tell you how a watch 
works,” Sports Illustrated’s Norm Chad wrote of him in 1992. The same 
year his criticism of Deion Sanders for playing two sports on the same 
day led to Atlanta outfielder/Falcons defensive back’s dumping a bucket 
of water on his head. In 1999, McCarver was fired by the Mets after 16 
seasons on the air.

The Mets said in a statement that McCarver 
gave Mets an insightful, humorous and knowledgeable behind the scenes 
look into the game.

“Some broadcasters think that their 
responsibility is to the team and the team only,” McCarver told the 
Times soon after the Mets let him go. “I have never thought that. My No.
 1 obligation is to the people who are watching the game. And I’ve 
always felt that praise without objective criticism ceases to be praise.
 To me, any intelligent person can figure that out.”

After 
retiring from Fox's national broadcasts, McCarver announced part-time 
for Fox Sports Midwest and worked the occasional Cardinals game before 
sitting out the 2020 season because of concerns about COVID-19. Besides 
the Frick award, he was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame, in 
2017.

“By the time I was 26 I had played in three World Series and
 I thought, ’Man this is great, almost a World Series every year,” he 
said during his acceptance speech. “Uh-uh. The game has a way of keeping
 you honest. I never played in another World Series.”

McCarver is survived by his daughters Kathy and Kelley, and grandchildren Leigh and Beau.

broadcaster who during 60 years in baseball won two World Series titles 
with the St. Louis Cardinals and had a long run as the one of the 
country's most recognized, incisive and talkative television 
commentators, died Thursday. He was 81.McCarver's death was 
announced by baseball's Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday 
morning due to heart failure in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with 
his family.Among the few players to appear in major league games 
during four decades, McCarver was a two-time All Star who worked closely
 with two future Hall of Fame pitchers: The tempestuous Bob Gibson, whom
 McCarver caught for St. Louis in the 1960s, and the introverted Steve 
Carlton, McCarver's fellow Cardinal in the '60s and a Philadelphia 
Phillies teammate in the 1970s.He switched to television soon 
after retiring in 1980 and called 24 World Series for ABC, CBS and Fox, a
 record for a baseball analyst on television.“I think there is a 
natural bridge from being a catcher to talking about the view of the 
game and the view of the other players,” McCarver told the Hall in 2012,
 the year he and Joe Buck were given the Ford C. Frick Award for 
excellence in broadcasting. “It is translating that for the viewers. One
 of the hard things about television is staying contemporary and keeping
 it simple for the viewers.”McCarver became best known to 
national audiences for his 18-year partnership on Fox with play-by-play 
man Buck. McCarver moved to Fox in 1996 when it began televising

really fast that if you were in his inner circle, he would be a fierce 
defender of you and for you,” Buck said Thursday. "He taught me how to 
deal with criticism because he had been criticized, his whole broadcast 
career. And sometimes it was because he was a teacher of the game. If 
some player or manager didn’t manage or play the way he thought the game
 should be played, he let a national audience know it. He was always the
 first one in the clubhouse the next day. If that person had something 
to say back to him, he would engage and stood his ground, but it was 
fair.“He taught me a lot about the game, but he taught me as much or more about how to broadcast on a on a national level.”Commissioner

feet tall and solidly built, McCarver was a policeman’s son from 
Memphis, who got into more than a few fights while growing up but was

broadcasters, notably the Cardinals’ Harry Caray. He was signed while 
still in high school by the Cardinals for $75,000, a generous offer for 
that time; just 17 when he debuted for them in 1959 and in his early 20s

 schools in Memphis and often spoke of the education he received as a

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals have announced that Manager&nbsp;Ned Yost&nbsp;has been voted into the Royals Hall of Fame. He will become the elite group’s 27th inductee during on-field ceremonies prior to the Royals Sept. 2, 2023 game at Kauffman Stadium vs. the Boston Red Sox.

Yost was elected in his first ballot appearance in a vote of living Royals Hall of Fame Members, and members of the Royals Hall of Fame Executive Board, select members of the Kansas City Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America, Kansas City media representatives, current Royals front office staff with 15 years of service or more, and Royals fans via an on-line vote. To be eligible for the ballot, Royals Alumni must have been active with the ballclub for at least three (3) seasons and accumulated a minimum of 1,500 plate appearances or 300 innings pitched or managed the equivalent of three full seasons. Eligible alumni shall have ceased to be an active on-field member of the Royals (or for any other Major League organization) in the role for which they are being considered for at least three (3) calendar years preceding the election. Eligible alumni must be named on at least seventy-five percent (75%) of all ballots cast to be elected. Yost received (88.2%) support.

The 16th full-time manager in team history, Yost was named to the post on May 13, 2010, and five years later became the winningest skipper in franchise history by defeating the only other club he managed, the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2 on June 18, 2015, for his 411th win, surpassing the mark previously held by fellow Royals Hall of Famer&nbsp;Whitey Herzog.

Yost, 68, led the Royals to a 22-9 postseason record for a .710 winning percentage, which set an MLB mark for managers who have managed at least 20 postseason games. His 2014 club was the first in Major League history to begin the postseason with eight consecutive victories, winning the Wild Card Game at home over Oakland, followed by sweeps of the Los Angeles Angels (3-0) in the Division Series and the Baltimore Orioles (4-0) in the Championship Series.

The following season, he managed the Royals to their second World Series title, defeating Houston in the Division Series (3-2) and Toronto (4-2) in the Championship Series, followed by a 4-1 series win over the New York Mets to bring Kansas City its second World Series Championship and first since 1985.

Yost is the Royals all-time leader in managerial wins (746) and was the first skipper to lead the Royals to consecutive World Series appearances. He finished his career 32nd all-time in games managed in MLB history, with 2,544, three more than National Baseball Hall of Fame manager&nbsp;Earl Weaver. Yost also finished 45th all-time in MLB history with 1,203 managerial wins.

The Buhler boys and girls bowling teams led by Skip Wilson each won their AVCTL Tournaments Wednesday for the second year in a row.

Landon Kurtz lead the charge for the boys with a 709 series score.  The boys broke their own state title record with this years team series score of 3748.  Andale was 2nd with a team score of 3094.

Teigan Nielson lead the Buhler girls with a 658 series score.  Buhler had a team series total of 2941.

The Boys JV team also won the JV League title for the first time in team history.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. –&nbsp;A late rally by Kansas fell just short as a Taiyanna Jackson lay-in attempt in the closing seconds fell off the rim, allowing West Virginia to claim a 62-60 victory over the Jayhawks on Wednesday evening at WVU Coliseum.

Trailing 60-51 with 4:19 to play, Kansas held WVU to just two points the rest of the way, while rallying to within two, 62-60, following a steal and layup by Wyvette Mayberry with nine seconds remaining. After KU fouled three times, WVU missed a pair of free throws, giving the Jayhawks possession in the front court with a chance to tie or win the game. Zakiyah Franklin got the ball in to Jackson, who’s attempt sat on the rim and bounced off as time expired.

The loss drops Kansas to 16-8 on the year and 6-7 in Big 12 play, while the Mountaineers move to 16-8 (7-6 Big 12) this season.

Jackson was nearly perfect on the night as she led the Jayhawks with 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. She added four blocked shots and one steal in the game. Franklin matched her career-high with four made three-pointers and totaled 16 points and five assists, while Mayberry also reached double figures with 13 points and six assists.

Kansas had a 32-to-20 advantage in points in the paint and shot 42.5% from the field, compared to 38.3% for WVU. The Mountaineers made up the difference by turning 15 KU turnovers into 22 points and hitting six more three-pointers than the Jayhawks.

Kansas rushed out to an early 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and led early in the early going until West Virginia used an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Jackson hit a pair of free throws late in the quarter to stop the run and get KU back within three, 17-14, at the end of the first.

The Jayhawks shot the ball well in the second quarter, hitting 5-of-8 attempts from the field, but five KU turnovers allowed WVU to lead throughout. The Mountaineers used a 7-0 run in the middle of the quarter to build their largest lead of the half at 30-20, but the Jayhawks got back within four on a Franklin basket with just over a minute to play in the half. West Virginia pushed its lead back to seven on a three-pointer in the closing second of the half and led 36-29 at the break.

Jackson had eight of KU’s 14 points in the third quarter as the Jayhawks tried to cut into the WVU lead. Her second of back-to-back baskets late in the quarter had KU within three at 45-42, but another late three-pointer by West Virginia pushed the lead back to seven 50-43 as the third quarter proved to be a stalemate on the scoreboard.

The fourth quarter saw WVU lead by as many as nine, the final time at 60-51 before KU’s run 9-2 run to close out the game.

Va. –&nbsp;A late rally by Kansas fell just short as a Taiyanna Jackson lay-in attempt in the closing seconds fell off the rim, allowing West Virginia to claim a 62-60 victory over the Jayhawks on Wednesday evening at WVU Coliseum.Trailing 60-51 with 4:19 to play, Kansas held WVU to just two points the rest of the way, while rallying to within two, 62-60, following a steal and layup by Wyvette Mayberry with nine seconds remaining. After KU fouled three times, WVU missed a pair of free throws, giving the Jayhawks possession in the front court with a chance to tie or win the game. Zakiyah Franklin got the ball in to Jackson, who’s attempt sat on the rim and bounced off as time expired.The loss drops Kansas to 16-8 on the year and 6-7 in Big 12 play, while the Mountaineers move to 16-8 (7-6 Big 12) this season.Jackson was nearly perfect on the night as she led the Jayhawks with 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. She added four blocked shots and one steal in the game. Franklin matched her career-high with four made three-pointers and totaled 16 points and five assists, while Mayberry also reached double figures with 13 points and six assists.Kansas had a 32-to-20 advantage in points in the paint and shot 42.5% from the field, compared to 38.3% for WVU. The Mountaineers made up the difference by turning 15 KU turnovers into 22 points and hitting six more three-pointers than the Jayhawks.Kansas rushed out to an early 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and led early in the early going until West Virginia used an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Jackson hit a pair of free throws late in the quarter to stop the run and get KU back within three, 17-14, at the end of the first.The Jayhawks shot the ball well in the second quarter, hitting 5-of-8 attempts from the field, but five KU turnovers allowed WVU to lead throughout. The Mountaineers used a 7-0 run in the middle of the quarter to build their largest lead of the half at 30-20, but the Jayhawks got back within four on a Franklin basket with just over a minute to play in the half. West Virginia pushed its lead back to seven on a three-pointer in the closing second of the half and led 36-29 at the break.Jackson had eight of KU’s 14 points in the third quarter as the Jayhawks tried to cut into the WVU lead. MANHATTAN –&nbsp;Despite cold temperatures and an impending winter storm outside, K-State was on fire inside Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday night as the Wildcats secured a season split for the second straight season against Baylor with an 87-68 win.

K-State (15-11, 4-9 Big 12) shot a season-high 60.4 percent (29-of-48) from the field which included a 71.4 percent (20-of-28) performance on two-point field goals and 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from three-point range.

K-State’s 60.4 percent effort from the field was its highest field goal percentage since carding a 64.9 percent performance against Incarnate Word on Dec. 3, 2019. It was the highest K-State field goal percentage in a Big 12 game since Feb. 11, 2015, against TCU, when the Wildcats shot 63.5 percent.

The 87 points by the Wildcats were the second-most points K-State has scored against Baylor (16-9, 7-6) in the history of the series, trailing the highwater mark of 89 on Jan. 5, 2002.

The Wildcats featured four players in double figures and were led by 2022-23 Drysdale Award candidate Gabby Gregory with her second double-double of the season with 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 7-of-8 from the foul line and 10 rebounds. Gregory, recently named a candidate for the Staley Award, completed her stat line with three assists, a steal and a block.

Joining Gregory in double digits was the sophomore trio of Serena Sundell, Brylee Glenn and Jaelyn Glenn. Sundell carded 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, six assists and five steals.

Brylee Glenn tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, five rebounds and three assists, while Jaelyn Glenn finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

🏀 WBB: K-State women race past Baylor on Wednesday night

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Two-time All-Star Corbin Burnes and Brady Singer lost in salary arbitration on Wednesday.

Burnes will receive $10.01 million from the Milwaukee Brewers rather than his $10.75 million request, Melinda Gordon, Jules Bloch and Keith Greenberg ruled one day after hearing arguments.

Singer will get $2.95 million rather than $3,325,000 from the Kansas City Royals, according to the decision by Howard Edelman, Walt De Treux and Brian Keller.

Three players went to hearings on Wednesday: Los Angeles Angels infielder Gio Urshela ($10 million vs. $8.4 million), St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley ($3 million vs. $2.15 million) and Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Josh Rojas ($2.9 million vs. $2,575,000).

Five other players await pending decisions and four more have possible hearings.

Burnes, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA last year and made a career-best 33 starts, which tied for most in the major leagues. He led the National League with 243 strikeouts, second in the big leagues behind New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole at 257. Burnes earned $6.55 million.

He won the 2021 NL Cy Young Award after leading the majors with a 2.43 ERA. He went 11-5 for the Brewers that year.

A five-year veteran, Burnes is 35-19 with a 3.21 ERA. He is eligible for free agency after the 2024 World Series.

Singer, a 26-year-old right-hander, was 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA in 24 starts and three relief appearances last year, when he had a salary of $726,250. He was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on April 28 and recalled on May 17.

Singer was eligible for arbitration for the first time.

All-Star pitcher Max Fried ($13.5 million) lost to Atlanta earlier, outfielder Kyle Tucker ($5 million) was beaten by Houston and reliever Diego Castillo ($2.95 million) was defeated by Seattle.

Left-hander Jesús Luzardo ($2.45 million) and AL batting champion Luis Arraez ($6.1 million) both beat Miami, and reliever Jason Adam ($1,775,000) defeated Tampa Bay.

The 31-year-old Urshela hit .285 with 13 homers and 64 RBIs last season for Minnesota, which traded him to the Angels on Nov. 18 for minor league right-hander Alejandro Hidalgo. Urshela earned $6.55 million.
