BARTLESVILLE, Okla.&nbsp;— The Kansas State University men's basketball team got it's first commitment from the class of 2024 on Tuesday, and it's a big one.

David Castillo, a 5-star point guard, announced his commitment to K-State on Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-1 point guard is the No. 27 overall prospect in the country for the Class of 2024, according to On3 Sports.&nbsp;

Castillo took official visits to Kansas and Oklahoma State before choosing K-State. He held offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida and many others.

Castillo is scheduled to graduate from Bartlesville High School next spring.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. --&nbsp;Wichita State launched six home runs in a game for the first time in 25 years and got six scoreless innings from the bullpen, knocking off Kansas State 10-4 on Tuesday night at Tointon Family Stadium. The win snaps an eight-game losing streak for the Shockers in Manhattan, giving WSU their first victory at Tointon Family Stadium since the 2012 season. The six round-trippers are the most for the Shockers in one game since&nbsp;April 26, 1998 against Indiana State. The Shockers (21-15) wasted little time breaking out the power bats in the top of the first.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/chuck-ingram/7448">Chuck Ingram</a>&nbsp;doubled on the first pitch of the game, and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/brock-rodden/7450">Brock Rodden</a>&nbsp;followed with a drive to deep right that was destined for a two-run homer before Kansas State right fielder Cash Rugely leaped to make the catch above the wall. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Bochy watched from the Texas dugout Tuesday night as, one by one, the Rangers stepped to the plate in the sixth inning to face Kansas City Royals reliever Carlos Hernández and sent his pitches right back at him.

All except for the one that Marcus Semien sent over the center field wall.

Semien's three-run shot highlighted a five-run inning that broke open a close game, and Adolis Garcia added another three-run homer in the eighth, as the Rangers routed the Royals 12-2 to reach their best 17-game start since the 2013 season.

Sandy León also drove in a pair of runs, and three Rangers that reached base on walks from erratic Royals starter Brad Keller also scored, as Texas (11-6) improved to five games over .500 for the first time since July 16, 2019.

“That's fun when it's on your side,” Bochy said of the Rangers' big sixth inning, which began with seven consecutive hits. “It did get contagious and that's baseball.”

The Rangers also dealt the Royals their fifth straight loss. They are 1-11 at home this season, and their 4-14 start is the second worst in franchise history behind only the 2-16 start that Kansas City had in 1992.

“You look at that game, it's close. They blew it open with that big sixth inning, but I didn't think the guys came out here thinking about yesterday,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were in a good, competitive game and it fell apart.”

Nathan Eovaldi (2-2) went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five. It was quite the bounce back after last week, when the Rangers' right-hander allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings against Kansas City.

“It took me a little bit to find my rhythm,” said Eovaldi, who allowed just one baserunner over his last two innings.

Keller (2-2) allowed three runs on three hits and five walks, including leadoff walks in three of his four innings.

In the third, Brad Miller walked before Travis Jankowski's single gave Texas a 1-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Josh Jung and Robbie Grossman walked before the pair scored on a single by Ezequiel Duran and Miller's fielder's choice.

Still, the Royals were within 3-2 after RBIs by MJ Melendez and Kyle Isbel when the Rangers put the game away in the sixth.

Hernández allowed four straight singles to start the inning, including the two-run base hit by León that extended the Rangers' lead. Semien followed with his three-run shot that traveled 417 feet and made it 8-2.

The line for Hernández: five runs on five hits without a batter retired.

“We had role players that did some major contributions and you're going to need that throughout the season,” Bochy said. “You are going to have guys that need to sit, they're going to miss games, and you're going to need someone to step up.”

Amir Garrett gave up two more hits in the sixth, running the Rangers' streak to seven straight to begin the inning. Isbel cut down Jankowski trying to score from second with a spectacular throw from deep center field, though, and Garrett finally was able to settle down enough to prevent Texas from scoring any more runs in the frame.

Given the way the Kansas City offense has performed this season, they already had more than enough.

Rangers ace Jacob deGrom plans to make his next start after leaving Monday night's game after four hitless innings with a sore right wrist. But the Rangers want to see him throw Wednesday before penciling him into the rotation.

“That's good news for us,” Bochy said. “Right now it's all positive, and he's positive on where he's at with that arm.”

Rangers: RHP Jon Gray (bruised right forearm) is “good to go” for his next start, Bochy said. Gray threw two shutout innings against the Astros on Saturday before taking a line drive off Yainer Diaz's bat off the forearm.

Royals: LHP Kris Bubic (forearm flexor strain) will get a second opinion on his injury Thursday. He experienced tightness during his start Saturday against Atlanta and the Royals have some “underlying concerns,” Quatraro said.

Rangers LHP Martin Perez (2-1, 2.87 ERA) faces Royals RHP Brady Singer (1-0, 4.91) in the series finale Wednesday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas continued its hot hitting Tuesday as the Jayhawks beat the Air Force Falcons 19-4 at Hoglund Ballpark. The Jayhawks have scored at least 18 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since 2007.

Every Jayhawk starter had a hit and RBI on Tuesday night. Redshirt sophomore Michael Brooks had a team-high four hits, while Tyler Gerety, Sam Hunt and Mike Koszewski each had three hits. KU had 19 hits as a team, with the four combining for 13 of those hits. Brooks and Koszewski each had four RBIs and Gerety added three himself.

Kansas (18-18, 5-7 Big 12) trailed 2-0 early in the game, but the Jayhawks went on to score the next 12 runs. In the second inning, a wild pitch and an RBI bunt single from Koszewski evened the game at 2-2. Brooks hit an RBI single in the third inning to give Kansas a 3-2 lead it would never relinquish.

Four runs came into score in the fourth inning for the Jayhawks. Back-to-back-to-back run-scoring hits with two outs by Janson Reeder, Gerety and Hunt pushed the Jayhawks lead to 7-2. Reeder hit an RBI double, Gerety had a two-run double and Hunt notched an RBI single.

Another run scored in the fifth on an RBI single by Cole Elvis and four runs scored in the sixth on a pair of infield singles and two sacrifice flies. Kansas had a 12-2 advantage after six innings.

Air Force (16-22, 9-9 Mountain West) added a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single, but Kansas came back immediately with an answer. The Jayhawks tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Gerety, an RBI double from Brooks and an RBI groundout from Koszewski to make the score 15-3.

Kansas added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth on two bases-loaded walks and a 2-run single by Koszewski. Air Force added a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to make the score 19-4.

Sophomore Gavin Brasosky made his first career start and earned the win after tossing four innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Ethan Bradford, Stone Evers and Toby Haarer combined to throw the final five innings of relief.

Tulsa struck first with a pair of first inning runs and led 2-0 until the seventh inning when DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. crushed a two-run homer on a line drive to left field. Keirsey’s homer against Tulsa marks his first of the season.

The No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team swept Jayhawk Conference Division I weekly honors for the third time this season on Tuesday.

Pennycuff's second weekly league honor is the fifth time this season that a Blue Dragon pitcher earned weekly honors.

Pennycuff, a freshman from Auburn, Nebraska, hit .455 for the week and had some very meaningful hits in a huge doubleheader sweep of Barton last week for the then-No. 17 Blue Dragons. Darnell was 5 for 11 with eight RBIs, including a double, triple and home run.

In the Dragons' doubleheader sweep of Barton, Darnell hit a three-run home run in Game 1 and added a three-run triple in Game 2 against the Cougars.

Pennycuff, a sophomore from Augusta, orchestrated back-to-back complete-game shutouts over Barton and Dodge City to go 2-0 for the Blue Dragons last week.

Pennycuff allowed a combined three hits over 12 innings – 1 to Barton, 2 to Dodge City – as she improved her season record to 12-2. Pennycuff had 10 strikeouts to only two walks.

NEWTON – The Hutchinson Community College men's golf team captured its fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference team title, winning the Jayhawk Championship, the third-and-final league designated tournament of the season, on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

Blue Dragon freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;won his second league tournament on Tuesday and was crowned the 2023 Jayhawk Conference individual season champion, the fourth-straight season that honor has been claimed by a Blue Dragon.

No. 2 nationally ranked Hutchinson carded a 2-over 290 on Tuesday to win the tournament by 16 strokes over No. 3 Dodge City. The Conquistadors shot 286 in the final round on Tuesday.

Hutchinson won the team title with 24.5 team points, which were amassed over the season's three league tournaments. The Blue Dragons tied Dodge City in the first league tournament and won Jayhawk No. 2 last week by 29 strokes.

The 2023 team championship is the 11th in Blue Dragon program history.

The Blue Dragons counted scores on Tuesday of 70 from Lindstrom, 73 from&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;and 74 from&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/anderson_marco_z2pq">Marco Anderson</a>.

Lindstrom was battling Barton's Worathan Thammachokecharoen for the individual title all day Tuesday, playing in the final group after the two players entered the final round tied for the tournament lead at 2-under par.

Thammachokecharoen led by one stroke through 11 holes. Lindstrom played the final seven holes in 2-under par, including three-straight birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 16. Thammachokecharoen was 3-over par of the final seven holes.

Lindstrom joins Ben Partridge (2022), Partridge and Charlie Crocket (2021) and Crocket (2019) during this current run of Blue Dragon individual league champions (the 2020 season was wiped out because of the Coronavirus pandemic). Lindstrom is the 12th Blue Dragon player to win the KJCCC individual season title.

Lindstrom finished with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday and won the individual tournament title with his third-straight under-par round in the tournament, closing at 4-under 212. Lindstrom won the tournament by three strokes over Dodge City's Supakit Seelanagae (215) and Thammachokecharoen (216).

Lindstrom won the season championship with 29 points. Saffell finished second in the season standings with 23.75 points and Clemons was fourth with 17 points. Lindstrom, Saffell and Clemons earned All-KJCCC first-team players. Anderson earned second-team all-league honors, placing ninth in the league standings with 11.75 points. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/galvin_louis_mscz">Louis Galvin</a>&nbsp;was an honorable mention player with four points and a 14th-place finish.

Four Blue Dragons placed in the tournament Top 10.

Clemons closed with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to place fourth at 1-over 217.

Saffell tied for fifth at 3-over 219 after a 73 on Tuesday.

Anderson tied for ninth at 3-over 74 and shot a 54-hole total of 5-over 221.

Galvin shot a 75 on Tuesday and tied for 20th at 231.

Individual player&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/svederman_kalle_hvj9">Kalle Svederman</a>&nbsp;shot a 74 on Tuesday and placed 19th in the tournament at 230.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/sauder_brooks_5d71">Brooks Sauder</a>&nbsp;shot 86 on Tuesday and closed the tournament tied for 39th at 244.

The Blue Dragons will next play at the Central District/Region VI Tournament at Crestview Country Club North on Monday and Tuesday in Wichita.

⛳️ HutchCC Golf wins KJCCC Championship for 4th straight year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the last 17 years, the University of Kansas men's basketball program has entered the NCAA Tournament with an average seed of 1.6.&nbsp;

Bill Self's teams have won two national championships (2008, 2022) and played for another (2012) in that span.

The nine-time conference coach of the year said winning is different when fans expect titles every year.

"Winning is a relief," Self said. "Winning becomes a relief and losing is a disaster."

<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/dillon-lecture-series">Self spoke in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday for the Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) about what it takes to be successful</a>. He also addressed how to achieve more after a goal is reached.

Self asked for the Wichita State fans to make some noise. A few did.&nbsp;

He asked for the K-State fans to make some noise. The crowd got a little louder.&nbsp;

As the applause faded, Self told those fans they could kindly leave.&nbsp;

All joking aside, Self praised the success of not just Kansas teams, but all collegiate teams because "Iron sharpens iron."

"It raises the bar for everybody," Self said.&nbsp;"We should be great because someone else is good."

Self is the sixth member of the Naismith Hall of Fame to speak for the DLS, now in its 42nd season.

He outlined what it took to be successful with so much pressure. 

"Show up," Self said. "Be fully present. Be a caretaker and contributor."

Self noted he is the chief caretaker of the most prestigious and storied program in the nation, but urged attendees to apply that same drive to their every-day job and life.

"When's the last time you were just present?" Self asked. "When was the last time you were at the dinner table and didn't look at your phone?"

Self outlined the culture change at KU that led to championships and added success.&nbsp;"The less we have to coach, the better we'll be," Self said of his teams that have been player-led.

He said many of those same concepts can be utilized in daily life.&nbsp;

"Add fun to what's going on," Self said. "We've got to enjoy each other. We have to energize a place."

"It's our responsibility to make sure we add value to everyone else," Self noted.

"Have a culture to make everyone better," Self said.

"Acknowledge what you don't know. Become a sponge," Self said to the youth in attendance.

According to Self, the great Henry Iba was a sponge. As an assistant at Oklahoma State, Self was in charge of chauffeuring Iba.

Self once made a comment about another coach that was not positive. "Can you believe this coach did that?" Self asked Iba.

"Let me tell you something," Iba responded. "A broken clock is right twice a day."

Self implored the youth of the audience to listen to their parents.

"Even as a young person, you might think your parents aren't nearly as smart as you," Self said, but he once again used Iba's example of the clock: It's still right two times a day.

MANHATTAN — Excitement is at an all-time high following one of the most successful athletic seasons in recent memory, and Wildcat fans will soon get the opportunity to see their favorite student-athletes and coaches as the department has announced its 2023 Kansas Strong Catbacker Tour dates and stops.

The tour will kick off May 17 with stops in Salina, Great Bend and Scott City before moving to Liberal, Garden City and Dodge City on May 18 and then on to Colby and Hays on May 19. Head coach Jerome Tang and other coaches and student-athletes will be in attendance during the swing of Western Kansas. Head coach Chris Klieman and other assistants and student-athletes will be a part of the second week of tours, beginning with Manhattan on May 22. Following stops in Hutchinson and Wichita on May 23, the tour will head to Emporia, Chanute and Kansas City May 24 and end in Seneca and Topeka on May 25. The tour stops will have a fan friendly atmosphere and feature mini-pep rallies and photo opportunities and meet and greets with the guests. K-State announces annual Catbacker Tour dates and stops

SALINA, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team will travel to Salina South on Tuesday, April 18th to take on the Cougars at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Salthawks are off to an 0-8 start following two home losses at home last Friday run rule losses to Campus, while the Salina South Cougars are 2-6 on the season and come in to today's games after dropping a double-header with Maize last Friday.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32796/jacob-degrom">Jacob deGrom</a>&nbsp;exited with a sore right wrist after pitching four spotless innings, and two&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/tex/texas-rangers">Texas Rangers</a>&nbsp;relievers completed a one-hitter Monday night in a 4-0 victory over the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-royals">Kansas City Royals</a>.

The Rangers said deGrom was removed as a precaution. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner struck out five and walked one, throwing 39 of his 58 pitches for strikes.

“I felt it a little bit warming up,” deGrom said. "I thought it was going to loosen up and it actually tightened up a little bit as the game went on.

“We’re playing it smart. Could I have kept going? Probably. But it was lingering and it got a little bit worse as the game went on. I just want to play it safe. We’ve got a long season ahead of us.”

Texas manager Bruce Bochy said there's concern any time you have to take a player out of a game because of injury, but he's optimistic.

“We'll re-evaluate him tomorrow,” Bochy said. “Any time you take somebody out, that's a fair question. I think I can answer it better tomorrow. Right now, I feel pretty good about it.”

<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42437/josh-jung">Josh Jung</a>&nbsp;launched a three-run homer in the first inning and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32146/marcus-semien">Marcus Semien</a>&nbsp;added a solo shot in the third.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/36080/dane-dunning">Dane Dunning</a>&nbsp;(1-0) struck out five and walked none in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

“He's been doing a terrific job for us,” Bochy said. “With the confidence in Dane coming in, we felt good. We brought in a guy who's been throwing the ball well. He was set to go, so that was an easy call.”

<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33453/matt-duffy">Matt Duffy</a>'s one-out single in the fifth off Dunning was Kansas City's only hit. José Leclerc got two outs to end it.

Beset by injuries the past two seasons with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/nym/new-york-mets">New York Mets</a>, deGrom signed a $185 million, five-year contract with Texas as a free agent in December.

“I'm honestly not too concerned,” he said. “I would like to think I'll make my next (start), but we'll see how it is tomorrow.”

The right-hander is 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in four starts for the Rangers.

Kansas City (4-13) dropped to 1-10 at home this season.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31061/jordan-lyles">Jordan Lyles</a>&nbsp;(0-3) gave up four runs — one earned — and three hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out three.

The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. ⚾ Rangers blank Royals 4-0 after deGrom exits with sore wrist

LAWRENCE, Kan.—Marcus Adams Jr. has signed to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Monday. Originally a class of 2024 recruit, Adams (6-foot-8, 205 pounds) reclassified for the 2023 class and will be a freshman at KU for the 2023-24 season.

“We started recruiting Marcus very late in the process,” Self said. “Coach (Kurtis) Townsend was the point recruiter with Marcus. When we had Marcus and his family in on an official visit, we just really connected. He certainly fills a need. He’s a tall wing. He’s 6-foot-8 and can shoot the basketball. He had two games this year, one in which he made 11 threes and the other which he made 13 threes. He’s good with the ball in his hands and can make plays for others as well. We think he is very underrated and a youngster that can find immediate minutes with the departure of our tall wings from last year.”

From Torrance, California, Adams played prep basketball at Nathaniel Narbonne High School where he averaged 28.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in 2022-23 for coach Kumase Demesma. He had three 40-point performances, including a 50-point, 21-rebound game. Adams was the recipient of the 2023 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year Award for the L.A. City Section Open Division.

A four-star recruit at the wing position, Adams is ranked No. 36 by 247Sports.com.

Adams is the fourth signee for Kansas for the 2023-24 season.
