LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) —&nbsp;No. 5 Kansas overcame a 17-point deficit, outscoring No. 9 Baylor 55-26 in the second half to beat the Bears 87-71 inside Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (22-5, 10-4 Big 12) outscored the Bears 55-26 in the second half. Kansas trailed by as many as 17 points, 40-23, with 3:30 to play in the first half. It was the largest deficit overcome by KU since defeating Kansas State 78-75 on Jan. 22, 2022 after also trailing by 17.

Kansas has now overcome two double-digit deficits to win in conference play for the first time since joining the Big 12 in 1996-97. The Jayhawks erased a double-digit halftime deficit and won by double digits for the first time since 2015 versus Oregon State. It’s the first time KU has done it in a conference game in the Big 12 era.

Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 21 points and 13 rebounds, marking his league-leading ninth double-double this season. Wilson has scored in double figures 26 times in 27 games this season. KJ Adams added 17 points and Gradey Dick had 16.

Baylor (20-7, 9-5) got nearly all of its scoring from its three-guard combo of Adam Flagler (22 points) Keyonte George (20 points) and LJ Cryer (15 points). The rest of the team combined to score just 14 points.

Baylor shot 9-of-14 from 3-point range in the first half and and 10 for 25 overall. Conversely, Kansas, which hit only 1-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half finished 6-for-21 from long distance.

The Jayhawks scored the last three points of the first half and the first 10 of the second half to trim a 15-point deficit to 45-42 with less than 2:30 gone in the second half.

When Dick hit a 3-pointer at the 14:29 mark, Kansas had stormed all the way back and led 50-49. The Jayhawks never trailed again and extended the lead to double digits (65-54) at the 10:20 mark of the second half. Kansas’ double-digit victory was the first time since Dec. 12, 2015 (vs. Oregon State) that Kansas trailed by double figures, only to come back and win by double-digits.

The Bears led 20-14 at the second media timeout with Cryer (11 points) and Flagler (9) combining for all 20 Baylor points. Baylor used an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 33-21 with 5:07 left. George joined in the scoring, and when he hit a 3-pointer with 3:54, followed by another with 3:32 left, the Bears led 39-23 with all the points coming from the three guards.

MANHATTAN, Kan.—Nineteen-year-old Dick Towers looked forward to admiring the construction every day on his walk to class. Towers, a native of Olathe, Kansas, who felt the heat while watching Kansas State basketball games inside stuffy 2,400-capacity Nichols Gymnasium, knew he was witnessing something special straight north of Memorial Stadium. It was a monument, no, an institution, no, a crown jewel rising 84 feet high, touching the Manhattan sky, so many years in the making, 10 to be exact, a petition of 4,000 names scratched on a roll of paper spanning nearly a quarter-mile long, pleading for a field house. The structure that Towers so liked to examine from afar each day would be named Ahearn Field House. It was a drive by several individuals, including Mike Ahearn, who served as basketball coach in the early 1900s and athletic director from 1920-47, and head coach Jack Gardner. Construction of Ahearn Field House was $2 million. Once completed, it was the fifth-largest fieldhouse in the United States with a capacity of 14,000, was the envy of every Big Seven Conference school, and it was used not only for basketball, but so much more. Two completely enclosed batting cages could be lowered from the ceiling, running track was a standard 220-yards in length with six three-feet lanes, and pole vault, high jump, broad jump and shot put facilities were available during track and field meets. The K-State football team used Ahearn Field House for spring practice, removing the basketball floor, which raised 22 inches above the earth floor. Over the years, Ahearn also housed women's volleyball, tennis, music concerts, rodeos, and speeches by prominent politicians. But, of course, it all trailed back to its original purpose, basketball, the hottest ticket in town. Towers played K-State football and ran track, and eventually became K-State athletic director from 1981-85. Towers is 92 years old and resides in Manhattan.

"Ahearn Field House was the largest indoor facility west of St. Louis all the way to the coast," Towers says. "Every day I walked on campus between 1949 and 1950 and saw the construction, and boy, it turned out to be a tremendous, tremendous facility, and a great use. It was really a mammoth. "At basketball games, of course, there were bleachers along the side, so when you sat next to somebody, you packed in tight. The amazing part was the attendance number. Nichols Gym seated 2,000 or maybe a little bit more, and as students you couldn't see all the ballgames. You were able to see one-third of the games. At the time, I helped set up bleachers before and after the ballgame at Nichols, so we got to see games inside Nichols, but with Ahearn, we went from 2,000 capacity to about 14,000. The town of Manhattan had about 20,000 people. A lot of people came to town to see Kansas State play basketball." Ahearn Field House officially sprang to life on December 9, 1950, when K-State hosted Utah State. The largest-ever capacity to witness a K-State basketball game arrived when 14,028 saw K-State defeat No. 4 Long Island, 85-65, on January 31, 1951. The Wildcats went on to win 378 games, including six undefeated home basketball seasons, inside Ahearn between 1950-51 and 1987-88. Former K-State head coach Lon Kruger remembers the final basketball game played in Ahearn. K-State beat Norm Stewart and Missouri, 92-82, on March 5, 1988. Kruger, a native of Silver Lake, Kansas, was two-time Big Eight Player of the Year in 1973 and 1974 and served as head coach from 1987-90.

"The last game against Missouri, there was a lot of build-up to that," Kruger says. "Norm Stewart and the Tigers were in town. It was a big-time game and a big-time atmosphere and a good result. It was always loud and intense, but that game, the fans raised it to another level. "The first thing that comes to mind are the fans. They impacted the outcome of a lot of games. I mean, just not in sheer numbers, but our fans were very knowledgeable. Sometimes, fans will respond to a good stretch, but our fans could sense when we needed a good stretch, and they demanded it. They were really unique in that way. It was the best atmosphere in the league. You didn't want to let the fans down." Even when the capacity shrank to 11,200 to accommodate health codes, Ahearn remained one of the most imposing arenas in college basketball.

Ahearn Field House also served as host site for the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament five times — 1996, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007. Liz Wegner-Busch remembers those days. The first two-time All-American women's volleyball player in K-State history, Wegner helped K-State to one of its most successful four-year stretches in history between 1998-2001. The Wildcats won 80 matches and participated in four NCAA Tournaments. "I remember the smell," she says. "It's very nostalgic to me. It just felt like home. I loved competing in Ahearn. I remember the very first time I walked onto the court during my recruiting visit, I thought it was the most unique setup and environment. I loved the court and how it was surrounded by the big track. I loved how over the years we began to pack Ahearn. They put the big purple netting behind the seating on the north side. "I liked how hot it got inside Ahearn. I loved competing when it was hot and always thought it was an advantage for us. A lot of teams couldn't handle the heat. I couldn't have imagined competing anywhere else."

Same goes for Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto, the world-renown track coach who is in his 31st&nbsp;season leading the program. Rovelto has personally coached 17 Olympians who have made a combined 22 Olympic appearances. However, Rovelto's introduction to Ahearn actually arrived before he officially came to K-State. Rovelto was a 22-year-old head track and field coach and basketball coach at McLouth High School. He attended a coaches clinic led by K-State head coach Jack Hartman. Kruger was a graduate assistant at that time. "My first time in Ahearn," Rovelto chuckles, "and I was there for a basketball coaching clinic." Ahearn would become Rovelto's home for more than three decades. "First of all, for track junkies, it's really kind of cool because you're in a relatively confined space and there are a lot of things going on at the same time," Rovelto says. "Indoor track has been described as a three-ring circus and it is in a lot of ways. There's always a lot of activity and energy at indoor meets, particularly when it means something." And Friday means something. On Friday, the K-State men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Steve Miller Invitational to finish out the indoor regular season before the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Friday's indoor track and field meet will mark the final athletic event ever in Ahearn Field House. After 72 years, two months and eight days, K-State athletics bids farewell to the facility that was once the envy of schools everywhere. "Being a dinosaur and being somebody who's been here for 35 years, it's the end of an era," Rovelto says. "It's been home. We've had a lot of outstanding performances in Ahearn. We've had a lot of really good track meets in there over the years. It's definitely something that'll be missed. It's just an evolution, but it's definitely something that I'll miss, that's for sure. "It'll be a little sentimental for me." It'll be sentimental for 92-year-old Towers as well. "Ahearn has so many memories for me," he says. "I'm an old guy that saw the thing grow up from its beginning. It was great to walk on campus and see the construction of it. It really was a good spot on campus. "We were all quite proud of the building."

Fond Memories in the Ahearn Field House

With the 1994 NJCAA national champion Blue Dragons in attendance, the 2022-23 Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to build on the success of Tuesday night with Jayhawk Conference matchup against Northwest Tech.

The Blue Dragons (16-11, 10-11) and Mavericks (10-16, 5-15) tip off as a matinee at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena. This is Hutchinson's first home Saturday afternoon tip at the Arena in the regular season in several seasons.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) at 3:45 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (Color) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game live at 3:45 p.m.

At halftime will be the 2023 Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Fame induction ceremony that will enshrine five individuals and the 1994 national champion Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons had one extra day to prepare for Northwest Tech, while the Mavericks had one less day to prep for the Dragons. Hutchinson and Colby moved Wednesday's game at Colby up to Tuesday because of the mid-week snowstorm to strike northwest Kansas. Tech's game with Seward County was postponed until Thursday.

Both teams enter Saturday's matchup with coming off victories.

The Blue Dragons put together one of their strongest defensive efforts of the season, holding Colby to a season-low 24 points in the first half in Hutchinson's 89-67 victory over the Trojans.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;produced his eighth double-double of the season with 27 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 11 of 22 shots from the field.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/potter_aaron_ylpj">Aaron Potter</a>&nbsp;went off in the second half hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers to finish with 14 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/carr_kieran_slod">Kieran Carr</a>&nbsp;had 11 points and season highs of eight rebounds and five assists.

With six 3-pointers in the game, the Blue Dragons have 299 for the season and are 14 away from surpassing the all-time single-season Blue Dragon record of 312 set last season.

Northwest Tech shot just shy of 50 percent in a 79-71 home victory over Seward County on Thursday. Zaire Hayes came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points. Keyishon Miller had 19 points.

Back on January 4 in Goodland,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/bundy_kernan_viy9">Kernan Bundy</a>&nbsp;nailed five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points to pace the Blue Dragons to a 90-87 victory over Northwest Tech. Franklin added 22 points as Hutchinson hit 12 3-pointers in the game.

Miller hit 9 of 13 from the field to pace Tech with 25 points.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons take on Northwest Ks Tech on Hall of Fame Day

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team plays its first home matinee in several years on Saturday and a much-improved Northwest Tech Mavericks provided the opposition on Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Fame Day.

The Blue Dragons (20-7, 14-7) and the Mavericks (10-15, 6-14) tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon Flagship Station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) at 1:45 p.m. with Steve Carpenter (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will also be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Then Hutchinson traveled to Goodland to meet Northwest Tech on January 4, that was a much-different looking Maverick team then. Missing some key people because of injuries, the Blue Dragons defeated the depleted Northwest Tech team 81-52.

The Northwest Tech team coming to the Sports Arena just pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history with a dominant 80-63 victory over Seward County on Thursday in Goodland. The Mavericks have now won three games in a row and 5 of their last 8 outings.

Northwest Tech's win over the Saints gave the Blue Dragons some help in Jayhawk Conference as Hutchinson now has a two-game lead over the Saints for fourth place in the KJCCC. Each team has three games to play and Hutchinson travels to meet the Saints on Wednesday in Liberal.

The Blue Dragons rebounded by exploding to a 24-4 third quarter on Tuesday to down Colby 80-41. The Blue Dragons reached the 20-win plateau for the 31st time in the program's 49-year history.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;had 19 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/howard_kali_o73g">Kali Howard</a>&nbsp;scored 15 points and Mia Williams added 12 points.

Back on January 4 in Goodland, the Blue Dragons shot nearly 50 percent with nine 3-point goals in their 81-52 victory over the Mavericks. Duffy and Williams scored 16 points each while&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;added 15 points. 🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons take on surging Mavericks Saturday

TEMPLE, Texas –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/bradford_blake_qa9v">Blake Bradford</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>&nbsp;both homered in the first two at-bats of this weekend's Texas road trip on Friday at Temple College.

The Blue Dragons weren't able to sustain the momentum on those back-to-back homers and fell to Temple College 7-2.

Now 3-2, the Blue Dragons play at Hill College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and at McLennan College at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Bradford hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the game on Friday. Edmunson followed with his second homer of the season to give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game. One out later,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/young_jackson_pkgv">Jackson Young</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/gunderson_cody_4bzo">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;both singled, but the Dragons didn't push more runs across.

From that point, the Blue Dragons had just one more hit in the game and the Temple bullpen didn't allow a hit over the final six innings.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit 14-5 by the Leopards.

Gunderson had the only multi-hit game for the Blue Dragons, going 2 for 4.

TISHOMINGO, Oklahoma – Murray State College has already rolled through a couple of Jayhawk Conference opponents early this season.

The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team didn't fare much better against the NJCAA Division II-No. 2-ranked Aggies on Friday.

Murray State combined for six home runs as the Aggies rolled by the Blue Dragons 18-2 and 8-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Dragons fell to 6-3 overall. Hutchinson wraps up this weekend's trip to Oklahoma and Texas with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday against North Central Texas in Gainesville, Texas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy is reported to be leaving for the Washington Commanders.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Friday that Bieniemy is finalizing a deal to be the new offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The deal is expected to be official by Saturday, Rapoport noted.

HAYSVILLE, Kan.—The Hutch High basketball teams wrapped up their final regular season road trip in fitting fashion on Friday night with a sweep of Haysville-Campus. The Salthawk Girls won 46-17 while the Hutch Boys let a run away game get interesting late in the fourth quarter before closing it out to remain undefeated with a 79-67 win over the Colts.

The Salthawk girls dominated Campus in about every phase of the game Friday night by establishing a big lead early in the first quarter 20 to 3. Then extended their lead at the half to lead 33 to 7.&nbsp; The Salthawks finished the game with a running clock to win their 14th game of the season 46 to 17.

Hutchinson had a balanced scoring attack, led by Josie McLean's 10 points. Super Sophomore Aliyah Green scored 9 followed by Grace Posch's 8 points including 2 treys in the game. Ayanna Green added 4 points with Kaia Smith, Libby Jackson and Mya Thompson adding 3 apiece.&nbsp; Hannah Ames, Kyndra Gaines and Azariah Dawes scored 2 each for the Salthawk girls in the win.

Campus was led by in scoring by Mya Free and Brylie Laake with 4 points each.

Hutchinson will host Derby next Tuesday at the SAC in Hutchinson.

The undefeated Salthawk Boys again jumped out to a huge lead in the first half vs Campus to lead at halftime, 51 to 26. However, Hutchinson allowed Campus to chip away at the big lead ending the third quarter leading 67 to 47.&nbsp; Campus got hot in the final quarter and managed to hold Hutch to only free throws and Nic Lange's two field goals to cut the lead to 9 on a late possession before Hutchinson closed it out to win by a 79-67 final score.

Hutchinson's Wade Meyer scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half with three triples to lead Hutch in scoring. Garrett Robertson had a solid night with 18. Sophomore Terrell King and Senior Nic Lange both had 12. Dauntay King had 7 points all in the second half. Julian Smith came off the bench to score 4. Bradyn Rodriquez added 2 along with Devon Spiller with 2 points to round out the scoring.

Hutchinson (18-0) clinched the AVCTL Div. 1 Championship and returns home to close out the season on Tuesday against Derby and Newton on Friday.&nbsp; 

Tuesday is Pack the SAC night with the public being asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Reno County Food Bank. Hutch Elementary students will receive a free Salthawk Basketball T-Shirt upon admission.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods had some explaining to do in the Genesis Invitational. Not only did a bad day putting give him a 74 and place him on the verge of missing the cut, some chauvinistic humor went viral as well. Social media zoomed on video of Woods handing Justin Thomas a tampon during the opening round after Woods hit it farther than Thomas off the tee. Woods apologized if anyone was offended. He said it was meant as a joke with Thomas. As for his golf, Woods finished with three bogeys on his last four holes and was outside the cut line when he finished.

Homa feeling at home and leads at Riviera as Tiger makes cut

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Homa is leading the Genesis Invitational. That used to be a big deal to the guy who grew up in the area. Now it feels normal because Homa is playing so well. Already a two-time winner this season, he had a 68 for a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm, Keith Mitchell and Lee Hodges. Tiger Woods will be around for the weekend, just barely. Woods made three bogeys over his last four holes for a 74 and will make the cut on the number. Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay are also in the mix going into the weekend.

A person familiar with the situation says free agent quarterback Derek Carr is meeting with the New York Jets this weekend. The 31-year-old spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Raiders but was released by Las Vegas after he declined to waive the no-trade clause in his contract. The Jets are looking for a veteran quarterback to lead their offense after Zach Wilson struggled mightily after being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn't announce its plans. NFL Network first reported on the meeting.

The Washington Commanders are finalizing terms of a deal with Eric Bieniemy to hire the longtime Kansas City Chiefs assistant as their offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. That's according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been competed. Bieniemy spent the past five seasons as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. They won the Super Bowl twice in that time. Bieniemy has interviewed for numerous head coaching jobs. But coach Andy Reid calling plays for Kansas City appeared to hurt Bieniemy's stock. He's now set to get the chance to call plays for Washington and run every aspect of its offense under Ron Rivera.

Qatar-based bid for Man United confirmed on deadline day

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — A Qatar-based bid for Manchester United has been confirmed with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani promising to rid the iconic soccer club of debt and return it to its former glories. Sheikh Jassim is the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank and has submitted a 100% offer to buy out current owners the Glazer family. Friday was the final day for serious bidders to step forward in the race to buy the club. The Glazer family bought United for about $1.4 billion in 2005. BBC Sport says it understands that British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos had also made a bid and met the deadline. There's been no official confirmation from Ineos.

Gasol, Nowitzki, Parker, Popovich among Hoop Hall finalists

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker are all one step closer to basketball immortality. The three international greats were among the list of Class of 2023 finalists unveiled Friday by the Basketball Hall of Fame, putting them on the doorstep of enshrinement this summer. Also on that list was Gregg Popovich, the winningest coach in NBA history with the San Antonio Spurs, and Dwyane Wade, part of three championship teams with the Miami Heat. The other finalists are Olympic champion and world champion Jennifer Azzi, six-time WNBA All-Star and WNBA championship-winning coach Becky Hammon; and longtime coaches Gary Blair, Gene Bess, David Hixon, Gene Keady and Marian Washington.

American skier Shiffrin leads 1st run of slalom at worlds

MERIBEL, France (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin took the lead with her first run of the slalom at the world championships Saturday. Shiffrin opened the race in 52.54 seconds. Swiss skier Wendy Holdener trailed by 0.19 seconds in second place. Laurence St-Germain of Canada was 0.61 behind in third. The rest of the field had more than nine-tenths of a second to make up in the second leg. Shiffrin is after her third medal at these worlds after winning gold in the giant slalom two days ago and silver in the super-G last week.

Ghana soccer player Christian Atsu dies in Turkey earthquake

Christian Atsu, the Ghana international forward who played for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle, has died in the earthquake in Turkey. He was 31. His manager said Saturday that search teams recovered Atsu's body in the ruins of a luxury 12-story building where he had been living in the city of Antakya, Hatay province. Murat Uzunmehmet told private news agency DHA, "Atsu's lifeless body was found under the rubble." Atsu joined Turkish club Hatayspor in September. Antakya, the city where Hatayspor is based, is in the southern region of Turkey hardest hit by the earthquake. The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude quake on Feb. 6 in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria passed 43,000 on Friday.

With 'Air,' Affleck tells lesser-known Michael Jordan story

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ben Affleck is promoting his movie "Air" at NBA All-Star weekend. It's the story of how Nike signed a rookie named Michael Jordan in 1984 to what became an iconic deal. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Led by Jaykwon Walton's 21 points, the Wichita State Shockers defeated the Temple Owls 79-65 on Thursday night. The Shockers are now 14-12 on the season, while the Owls fell to 14-13.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — IndyCar driver Conor Daly raced Floyd Mayweather into the Daytona 500 for a second consecutive year by bobbing and weaving his way through myriad issues for the ill-prepared team. Daly’s attempt to make his first Daytona 500 was only announced last week. Daly will become the 62nd driver in history to race in both the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500. In May, he can become the 29th driver to compete in both races in the same year. His chances seemed slim from the moment Daytona International Speedway opened because of problems with his car.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The fast-food burger wars were on the menu in the run-up to the Daytona 500. McDonald's and Wendy's bickered this week over the paint schemes for their respective drivers. Bubba Wallace races with McDonald's golden arches on the car. Noah Gragson has Wendy's on his car. Wendy's took a shot at McDonald's ubiquitous logo selection and called it McBland. McDonald's retorted it had better results this week at Daytona.

It skipped about $140 million in interest payments due Wednesday, starting a 30-day grace period that could be the prelude to a bankruptcy filing. Manfred acknowledged some teams could be at risk of losing revenue. He says MLB is prepared to help those teams.

MERIBEL, France (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin won the gold medal in the women’s giant slalom at the world championships. Shiffrin held on to her first-run lead to beat Italian skier Federica Brignone by 0.12 seconds. Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway took bronze. It’s Shiffrin’s seventh world title and 13th medal overall from 16 career world championship races. Shiffrin’s victory came a day after an unexpected split with longtime coach Mike Day. Shiffrin was the 2018 Olympic champion in the event and won five of the last six giant slaloms on the World Cup circuit. The victory makes her only the fourth female skier to win world titles in four different disciplines.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested and charged with choking his fiancee and fired less than a month later when the university said he was “unfit” to lead the program. Now the third-degree felony charge is dismissed, and so is the threat of up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors announced that after reviewing the evidence and the fiancee's wishes not to prosecute they likely could not get a conviction. Domestic violence experts say prosecutors had little room to maneuver without a cooperative witness.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma is in the midst of one of the most dominant runs ever in women's college softball. The Sooners have won five of the past nine national titles. They could add another rare accolade this season by becoming the first program since UCLA from 1988 to 1990 to win three consecutive titles. During 60 years in major league baseball, McCarver played in two All-Star games and on two World Series championship teams. He was the preferred catcher for Bob Gibson in the 1960s and Steve Carlton in the 1970s. He later had a long run as one of the country’s most recognizable, incisive and talkative television commentators. For years, he teamed with Joe Buck on Fox sports telecasts. The Baseball Hall of Fame honored his on-air work in 2012.

It was also the Shockers' first Liacouras Center victory, albeit on just their third try, due to a combination of unbalanced schedules and COVID-19. Nationally-ranked WSU teams fell in 2018 and 2020. Temple (14-13, 8-6) used a 13-0 run to forge ahead 62-58 at the 6:23-mark of the second half but missed eight straight nine of its last 10 shots. The Shockers scored the next 15 points to take control. NEW YORK — Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame 
broadcaster who during 60 years in baseball won two World Series titles 
with the St. Louis Cardinals and had a long run as the one of the 
country's most recognized, incisive and talkative television 
commentators, died Thursday. He was 81.

McCarver's death was 
announced by baseball's Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday 
morning due to heart failure in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with 
his family.

Among the few players to appear in major league games 
during four decades, McCarver was a two-time All Star who worked closely
 with two future Hall of Fame pitchers: The tempestuous Bob Gibson, whom
 McCarver caught for St. Louis in the 1960s, and the introverted Steve 
Carlton, McCarver's fellow Cardinal in the '60s and a Philadelphia 
Phillies teammate in the 1970s.

He switched to television soon 
after retiring in 1980 and called 24 World Series for ABC, CBS and Fox, a
 record for a baseball analyst on television.

“I think there is a 
natural bridge from being a catcher to talking about the view of the 
game and the view of the other players,” McCarver told the Hall in 2012,
 the year he and Joe Buck were given the Ford C. Frick Award for 
excellence in broadcasting. “It is translating that for the viewers. One
 of the hard things about television is staying contemporary and keeping
 it simple for the viewers.”

McCarver became best known to 
national audiences for his 18-year partnership on Fox with play-by-play 
man Buck. McCarver moved to Fox in 1996 when it began televising 
baseball and called his final World Series in 2013.

“I learned 
really fast that if you were in his inner circle, he would be a fierce 
defender of you and for you,” Buck said Thursday. "He taught me how to 
deal with criticism because he had been criticized, his whole broadcast 
career. And sometimes it was because he was a teacher of the game. If 
some player or manager didn’t manage or play the way he thought the game
 should be played, he let a national audience know it. He was always the
 first one in the clubhouse the next day. If that person had something 
to say back to him, he would engage and stood his ground, but it was 
fair.

“He taught me a lot about the game, but he taught me as much or more about how to broadcast on a on a national level.”

Commissioner
 Rob Manfred said in a statement that McCarver was “a respected teammate
 and one of the most influential voices our game has known.”

Six 
feet tall and solidly built, McCarver was a policeman’s son from 
Memphis, who got into more than a few fights while growing up but was 
otherwise playing baseball and football and imitating popular 
broadcasters, notably the Cardinals’ Harry Caray. He was signed while 
still in high school by the Cardinals for $75,000, a generous offer for 
that time; just 17 when he debuted for them in 1959 and in his early 20s
 when he became the starting catcher.

McCarver attended segregated
 schools in Memphis and often spoke of the education he received as a 
newcomer in St. Louis. His teammates included Gibson and outfielder Curt
 Flood, Black players who did not hesitate to confront or tease 
McCarver. When McCarver used racist language against a Black child 
trying to jump a fence during spring training, Gibson would remember 
“getting right up in McCarver’s face.” McCarver liked to tell the story 
about drinking an orange soda during a hot day in spring training and 
Gibson asking him for some, then laughing when McCarver flinched.

feet tall and solidly built, McCarver was a policeman’s son from 
Memphis, who got into more than a few fights while growing up but was 
otherwise playing baseball and football and imitating popular 
broadcasters, notably the Cardinals’ Harry Caray. He was signed while 
still in high school by the Cardinals for $75,000, a generous offer for 
that time; just 17 when he debuted for them in 1959 and in his early 20s
 when he became the starting catcher.McCarver attended segregated
 schools in Memphis and often spoke of the education he received as a 
newcomer in St. Louis. His teammates included Gibson and outfielder Curt
 Flood, Black players who did not hesitate to confront or tease 
McCarver. When McCarver used racist language against a Black child 
trying to jump a fence during spring training, Gibson would remember 
“getting right up in McCarver’s face.” McCarver liked to tell the story 
about drinking an orange soda during a hot day in spring training and 
Gibson asking him for some, then laughing when McCarver flinched.“It
 was probably Gibby more than any other Black man who helped me to 
overcome whatever latent prejudices I may have had,” McCarver wrote in 
his 1987 memoir “Oh, Baby, I Love It!”Few catchers were strong 
hitters during the ’60s, but McCarver batted .270 or higher for five 
consecutive seasons and was fast enough to become the first in his 
position to lead the league in triples. He had his best year in 1967 
when he hit .295 with 14 home runs, finishing second for NL Most 
Valuable Player behind teammate Orlando Cepeda as the Cardinals won 
their second World Series in four years.McCarver met Carlton when
 the left-hander was a rookie in 1965 “with an independent streak wider 
than the Grand Canyon,” McCarver later wrote. The two initially clashed,
 even arguing on the mound during games, but became close and were 
reunited in the 1970s after both were traded to Philadelphia. McCarver 
became Carlton’s designated catcher even though he admittedly had a 
below average throwing arm and overall didn’t compare defensively to the
 Phillies’ regular catcher, Gold Glover Bob Boone.“Behind every 
successful pitcher, there has to be a very smart catcher, and Tim 
McCarver is that man,” Carlton said during his Hall of Fame induction 
speech in 1994. “Timmy forced me pitch inside. Early in my career I was 
reluctant to pitch inside. Timmy had a way to remedy this. He used to 
set up behind the hitter. There was just the umpire there; I couldn’t 
see him (McCarver), so I was forced to pitch inside.”McCarver 
liked to joke that he and Carlton were so in synch in the field that 
when both were dead they would be buried 60 feet, 6 inches apart, the 
distance between the rubber on the pitching mound and home plate.During
 a 21-year career, when he also played briefly for the Montreal Expos 
and Boston Red Sox, McCarver batted .271 and only twice struck out more 
than 40 times in a season. In the postseason, he averaged .273 and had 
his best outing in the 1964 World Series, when the Cardinals defeated 
the New York Yankees in seven games. McCarver finished 11 for 23, with 
five walks, and his 3-run homer at Yankee Stadium in the 10th inning of 
Game 5 gave his team a 5-2 victory.Younger baseball fans first 
knew him from his work in the broadcast booth, whether local games for 
the New York Mets, Yankees, Philadelphia and San Francisco, as Jack 
Buck’s partner on CBS (1990-91) or with son Joe Buck for Fox from 
1996-2013. McCarver won six Emmys and became enough of a brand name to 
be a punchline on “Family Guy”; write a handful of books, make cameos in
 “Naked Gun,” “Love Hurts” and other movies and even record an album, 
“Tim McCarver Sings Songs from the Great American Songbook.”Knowledge
 was his trademark. In his spare time, he visited art museums, read 
books and could recite poetry from memory. At work, he was like a 
one-man scouting team, versed in the most granular details, and spent 
hours preparing before each game. At times, he seemed to have psychic 
powers. In Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, the score was tied at 2 
between the Yankees and Arizona, and New York drew in its infield with 
the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth. Mariano Rivera 
was facing Luis Rodriquez.“Rivera throws inside to left-handers,”
 McCarver observed. “Left-handers get a lot of broken-bat hits into 
shallow outfield, the shallow part of the outfield. That’s the danger of
 bringing the infield in with a guy like Rivera on the mound.”Moments later, Gonzalez’s bloop to short center field drove in the winning run.“When
 you the consider the pressure of the moment,” ESPN’s Keith Olbermann 
told The New York Times in 2002, “the time he had to say it and the 
accuracy, his call was the sports-announcing equivalent of Bill 
Mazeroski’s home run in the seventh inning to defeat the Yankees in 
1960.”Many found McCarver informative and entertaining. Others 
thought him infuriating. McCarver did not cut himself short whether 
explaining baseball strategy or taking on someone’s performance on the 
field. “When you ask him the time, (he) will tell you how a watch 
works,” Sports Illustrated’s Norm Chad wrote of him in 1992. The same 
year his criticism of Deion Sanders for playing two sports on the same 
day led to Atlanta outfielder/Falcons defensive back’s dumping a bucket 
of water on his head. In 1999, McCarver was fired by the Mets after 16 
seasons on the air.The Mets said in a statement that McCarver 
gave Mets an insightful, humorous and knowledgeable behind the scenes 
look into the game.“Some broadcasters think that their 
responsibility is to the team and the team only,” McCarver told the 
Times soon after the Mets let him go. “I have never thought that. My No.
 1 obligation is to the people who are watching the game. And I’ve 
always felt that praise without objective criticism ceases to be praise.
 To me, any intelligent person can figure that out.”After 
retiring from Fox's national broadcasts, McCarver announced part-time 
for Fox Sports Midwest and worked the occasional Cardinals game before 
sitting out the 2020 season because of concerns about COVID-19. Besides 
the Frick award, he was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame, in 
2017.“By the time I was 26 I had played in three World Series and
 I thought, ’Man this is great, almost a World Series every year,” he 
said during his acceptance speech. “Uh-uh. The game has a way of keeping
 you honest. I never played in another World Series.”McCarver is survived by his daughters Kathy and Kelley, and grandchildren Leigh and Beau.
