MANHATTAN, Kansas – After a stellar opening weekend, K-State sophomore defender Jazmin Brown earned a share of the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor in an announcement by the league office on Wednesday. Brown shared the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor with BYU's Kendell Petersen.
In addition to earning the Big 12 co-Defensive Player of the Week citation, Brown was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week and the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the first time in her career. She is the first Wildcat to earn all three weekly honors in the same week.
Brown is the third Wildcat to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining goalkeeper Miranda Larkin (October, 2017) and defender Shae Turner (November, 2020).
The product of Gilbert, Arizona, helped the Wildcats secure an unbeaten opening weekend for the first time since 2018, including the program's first road point against a ranked opponent. She opened the 2023 season with the first two goals of her collegiate career, heading home a pair of corner kicks in K-State's 4-1 win at Green Bay. She was the second Wildcat and first K-State defender to score two or more goals in a season-opener.
At 18th-ranked Northwestern on August 20, Brown helped snuff out a number of attacks by Northwestern and push K-State to its first shutout of the season. The shutout was K-State's first since September 22, 2022, at Iowa State.
For the season, Brown has played all 180 minutes. She has attempted two shots this season with both finding the back of the net.
K-State returns to action on Thursday night at 8 p.m., as the Wildcats host UTSA in its home opener at Buser Family Park.
Thursday's match against UTSA is National Waffle Day, as K-State students will be treated to a free waffle bar on the south pavilion above the student section.
