NORMAN, Ok. (AP) - Grant Sherfield scored 22 points and Oklahoma went on a 12-0 run early in the second half on their way to a 79-65 win over No. 12 Kansas State on Tuesday night.

The win snapped a seven-game Big 12 conference losing streak for the Sooners (13-13, 3-10 Big 12) and prevented the Wildcats (19-7, 7-6) and first-year coach Jerome Tang from earning their 20th win of the year.

Tanner Groves scored 16 while freshman Milos Uzan added 13 for Oklahoma. Nae’quan Tomlin had 17 points — 13 of them in the first half — and 10 rebounds to pace Kansas State.

Sherfield’s 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds of the opening half sent the teams into intermission tied at 36.

The Wildcats got the first basket of the second half, and then the Sooners scored 12 straight to move to a 48-38 lead early in the second half, spurred by threes from Sherfield, Groves and Uzan. Oklahoma shot 11-for-23 (47.8%) and went on to lead by as many as 16. Kansas State got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

It was Oklahoma’s first conference win in a month, since a one-point win at home over West Virginia. With the loss, Kansas State fell into a fifth place tie with Oklahoma State in the Big 12 race.

Kansas State - Tang was trying to become just the fourth Wildcats coach to win 20 games in his first season, joining Lon Krueger, Bob Huggins and Frank Martin. He is currently still tied for the winningest first year head coach this season with Sean Miller of Xavier and Dennis Gates of Missouri.

Oklahoma - The Sooners shot 14% better from three than their season average. The Sooners avoided their eighth straight conference loss, which last occurred in the 2011-12 season.

Both teams came out on top.&nbsp; The Salthawk girls defeated 5A No. 7 Maize South 47-43 in double overtime before the 5A No. 2 Hutchinson boys completed the sweep, winning 52-49 over the 5A No. 4 Mavericks. Maize South turned up its defensive intensity and caused all sorts of problems for the Salthawks. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs awoke Monday still reveling in the glow of their second Super Bowl title in a four-year span, while the Philadelphia Eagles were left to lament how close they came to winning another Lombardi Trophy of their own. BEATRICE, Nebraska – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team earned its first series victory of the season after splitting Games 3 and 4 of the season-opening series with Southeast Community College on Monday at Christensen Field.

Will Edmundson continued his torrid start with a pair of twos and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/childress_max_4ayg">Max Childress</a>&nbsp;drove in three runs as Hutchinson defeated the Storm 8-4 in the first game on Monday. The Blue Dragons had 10 hits, but stranded 14 base runners in a 5-4 loss in the series finale.

The Blue Dragons are 3-1 after the opening weekend. The Blue Dragons travel to Texas this weekend for three games against Temple, Hill and McLennan.

GAME 1 RECAP Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/mckee_gus_hrea">Gus McKay</a>&nbsp;earned a victory in his first career start, working four-plus innings in the first game on Monday. McKay allowed four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks. He threw three shutout innings in the first three innings. After retiring the first two batters of the fourth inning, McKay allowed a two-out walk and run-scoring double.

⚾️ Dragon BSB starts 3-1

The Hutchinson and Colby Community College athletics departments made a mutual decision on Sunday to move up Wednesday's regularly scheduled games to Tuesday.

The reason that prompted the move is a scheduled winter storm for northwest Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday. Colby is forecast to have anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow with north wins above 30 mph.

The Blue Dragons and Trojans will now play on Tuesday at the Colby Events Center. The women's game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Open Spaces Sports will provide the only video stream of the games.

The games will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9), beginning at 5:15 p.m.

🏀Hutchinson at Colby Games moved up to Tuesday

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in a memorable Super Bowl that included plenty of big plays on and off the field. Here's a look at some top moments from Sunday night's game:

Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining to lift the Chiefs to their 38-35 win over the Eagles. The Chiefs have won the Super Bowl in two of the past four seasons and their roll shows no sign of stopping, especially with Patrick Mahomes throwing the passes. Kansas City's quarterback overcame a sprained ankle to earn Super Bowl MVP honors after throwing for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Coach Andy Reid also captured his second Super Bowl title and this one came at the expense of the franchise he coached for 14 seasons before coming to Kansas City.

Rihanna provided a high-flying halftime performance in Arizona. The nine-time Grammy Award winner began and ended the halftime show suspended high above the field. She wore a puffy, bright red jumpsuit with tight, rubbery garb underneath as she stood on a transparent rectangular platform that raised and lowered as she belted out the lyrics to her hit songs over the turf.

Oh yeah, and to top it off, she did the performance while pregnant, news that was revealed after the show.

The Phoenix area is no stranger to hosting big events, but this was a huge weekend even by its standards. The winter and spring months are already tourist season in Arizona and the Super Bowl added another layer of revelry, adding tens of thousands of people who filled bars and restaurants and at times spilled into the streets. Throw in the Phoenix Open, the PGA Tour's version of a boozy mosh pit on grass, and the Phoenix area transforms into a weeklong Valley of Fun.

"The buzz is definitely here," said Jay Parry, president and CEO of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.

This could be a highlight or lowlight, depending on rooting allegiances, but James Bradberry's penalty on the final drive was undeniably a huge moment. The Chiefs were driving and faced third-and-8 at the Eagles 15-yard line with 1:54 remaining when Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw incomplete to JuJu Smith-Schuster. But officials flagged Bradberry for defensive holding, which negated the incompletion and, more importantly, gave the Chiefs a first down. Replays showed Bradberry made light contact with Smith-Schuster, though it didn't appear to affect the play much. Many fans — and some football commentators — disagreed with the call. The only person who didn't seem upset with the call was Bradberry himself.

"It was a holding. I tugged his jersey," Bradberry said. "I was hoping they would let it slide."

Mahomes rallied the Chiefs to victory and for that, casinos around the U.S. were pleased. Kansas City's 38-35 win meant the books were winners on the betting line, which generally favored the Eagles by 1 1/2 points and drew plenty of wagering on the NFC champions. That victory by the casinos offset a loss on the total, which was 51 1/2 points at many places. Sports betting has become huge business in the U.S. now that two-thirds of the country can do so legally.

Kadarius Toney's struggles with injuries and inconsistency prompted the New York Giants to give up on him midway through his second NFL season. The Kansas City Chiefs gave him a second chance and the talented receiver proved he's no first-round bust. Toney made history and two of the biggest plays in the Chiefs' win. His 65-yard punt return in the fourth quarter was a particularly big moment. It was the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.

The first hint it might be the Chiefs' night came in the second quarter when Hurts fumbled and Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton scooped up the football and ran 36 yards for the touchdown. It was at a pivotal moment in the evening: The Eagles were ahead 14-7 and driving at midfield when Bolton's game-changing play occurred. Suddenly, the game was tied and the drama was just beginning.

The Super Bowl might be known for its extravagance, but country singer and songwriter Chris Stapleton didn't need any high-tech help for a stellar performance during the national anthem. Stapleton stood at midfield with just a guitar and his smooth baritone voice, belting out an emotional rendition that had Eagles coach Nick Sirianni in tears by the end.

Hurts wasn't victorious in his first Super Bowl appearance, but the young quarterback has no reason to be ashamed. He was phenomenal in Arizona, setting a Super Bowl record with three rushing touchdowns. On top of that, he completed 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown, showing poise and perfect throwing touch on a number of occasions.

The field at State Farm Stadium may have looked immaculate, but by the second half, it was clear that traction was not great. Said Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata: "It was like playing on a water park." The grass at State Farm Stadium is on a giant tray that is rolled in and out of the retractable roof stadium. The field sits out in the Arizona sun on warm days and is brought back inside when it gets cold. This particular batch of grass started growing in May of 2021, but even a nearly two-year process couldn't produce a flawless field.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin made it to the Super Bowl. He made three appearances during the week in Arizona, including on the field at State Farm Stadium prior to the game. It's been a little more than a month since Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated on the field in Cincinnati. Sunday's appearance was another milestone in his remarkable recovery. "I'm allowing that to be in God's hands," Hamlin said in an interview with Fox's Michael Strahan. "I'm just thankful he gave me a second chance."

The Kansas City Chiefs gave him a second chance and the talented receiver proved he's no first-round bust. Toney made history and two of the biggest plays in the Chiefs' win. His 65-yard punt return in the fourth quarter was a particularly big moment. It was the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.BOLTON'S SCOOP, SCOREThe first hint it might be the Chiefs' night came in the second quarter when Hurts fumbled and Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton scooped up the football and ran 36 yards for the touchdown. Long before Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the biggest winner of this NFL season walked onto the field. Damar Hamlin came out to a rousing ovation during a pregame ceremony honoring the men and women who saved his life.

Hamlin’s third appearance of the week was the best feel-good moment on a day filled with many inspirational themes.

Mahomes and Jalen Hurts put on a historic show in the first Super Bowl featuring two Black starting quarterbacks. Hurts was spectacular but Mahomes played through an ankle injury and rallied the Chiefs from a 10-point deficit for a 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

It was yet another lesson on dealing with adversity and rising to the occasion playing out before hundreds of millions of viewers on the sport’s biggest stage.

“I appreciate it because of the failures,” Mahomes said about winning his second championship in four years. “I mean the failure of losing a Super Bowl and losing the AFC championship game gives you a greater appreciation to be standing here as a champion."

Brotherhood was on display in the first Super Bowl matchup involving two brothers playing on different teams. Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce caught a touchdown pass to help his team topple All-Pro center Jason Kelce and the Eagles. Mama Kelce was everywhere throughout the week and sat between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Hamlin in a suite.

“There’s nothing I can say to him other than I love him and he played a hell of a year, a hell of a season,” Travis Kelce said. “To see my family be in all its glory and get all its flowers, my mom be the center of attention on the Jumbotron before the game on the biggest stage and being able to get closer with my brother throughout the season and to meet him at the mountain top, it’s the best feeling in the world. I don’t know how many more I got left, but I’ll cherish this one forever.”

Donna Kelce was the most popular mother in Arizona until Rihanna showed up for a scintillating halftime show. The superstar singer kicked off and finished her superb performance soaring high above the slippery field surface on a platform that was suspended in the air.

And, she did it while pregnant. Rihanna’s representative confirmed afterward that she’s pregnant with her second child.

“So iconic for Rihanna to let an American football game happen at her pregnancy reveal/concert,” a fan wrote on Twitter.

Even the commercials had a warm, fuzzy vibe. Advertisers used familiar celebrity faces, light humor and plenty of cute dogs in ads that cost as much as $7 million for 30 seconds.

About the only negative on Super Sunday was a controversial penalty on the final drive of the game that left viewers feeling angry that officiating again impacted a playoff game. A defensive holding call on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry allowed Kansas City to keep the ball, run down the clock and Harrison Butker kicked the go-ahead 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left.

But Bradberry quickly squashed the outrage, saying he held the receiver.

“It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide,” Bradberry said.

On a day filled with unifying events, Bradberry’s acknowledgement was a prime example of losing with dignity.

A fifth-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1972 NFL Draft, the Wyoming product played the game how he wanted, which led to Dobler earning three Pro Bowl selections in his 10 NFL seasons, which included time with the Cardinals, New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and former teammates of Conrad Dobler," Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said in the team's statement "He was the kind of tough, physical and fierce player that you love to line up with as a teammate and hate to line up against as an opponent. The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) is pleased to introduce Mike Saddler as the next Commissioner of the Jayhawk Conference effective July 1, 2023. Saddler is set to succeed current KJCCC Commissioner, Carl Heinrich, who announced his retirement at the end of the 2022-2023 year.

Heinrich has served as the head of the Jayhawk Conference since 2018, providing the leadership for 21 institutions in Kansas, including the 19 community colleges, Northwest Tech, and Hesston College.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to become the next commissioner of the premier conference in the NJCAA. I’ve been fortunate to spend 16 years involved with this conference as a player, coach, and administrator so getting the privilege to lead the conference as it’s commissioner is humbling. I’m looking forward to working alongside the presidents, athletic directors, and coaches to help this conference continue to grow and thrive”, said Saddler. Current KJCCC President, Dr. Marlon Thornburg of Coffeyville said, “we’re excited to have Mike on board to lead the Jayhawk Conference. His knowledge and experience within the conference and on the national level will be beneficial as he provides the leadership for our member institutions.”

Saddler is the current Athletic Director at Colby Community College in Colby, KS, a position he has held since 2018. The Trojans have experienced outstanding success on the field under Saddler. Colby has won five of the 18 Jayhawk Conference Championships since Saddler become the Athletic Director, and the men’s cross-country team recently claimed the school’s first National Championship in over 20 years.

Prior to his time at Colby, Saddler spent nine years at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, KS. He started his career at Neosho County as an assistant baseball coach where he helped guide the team to its second NJCAA World Series appearance before transitioning to a role in athletic administration in the fall of 2012. Saddler spent three years as Assistant Athletic Director, before being named the Athletic Director in the Spring of 2015.

Saddler has also been an active voice at the conference and national level serving as the Region 6 Men’s Director since 2015. As part of his role Saddler has served as the NJCAA Division I Baseball Chair since 2017 and also serves as the vice chair of the NJCAA Eligibility Committee in addition to other committee assignments. In 2017 Saddler was also named the Jayhawk Conference Secretary/Treasurer.

An alum of the Jayhawk Conference, Saddler began his collegiate career as a student-athlete at Colby Community College where he earned an Associate degree and NJCAA All-Academic honors in 2002. He would continue on to the University of Kansas where he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree followed by a Master’s of Science in Sports Administration from Fort Hays State University.

Saddler has been a member of the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators and the National Association of College Directors of Athletics since 2012. In July of 2022 Saddler was recognized as the 2021-22 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Athletic Director of the Year.

Saddler and his wife Sara reside in Colby, KS. The Saddlers have two sons, Brody (12) and Hudson (9).

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Quarterback Derek Carr turned down a trade offer from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New Orleans Saints, a person with knowledge of the decision said Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to comment publicly. That person said Carr wouldn’t accept a pay cut to help finalize the deal, and the Saints were the only team interested in making a trade with the Raiders. Carr has a no-trade clause in his contract. Given those circumstances and Wednesday’s deadline for the Raiders to trade or release Carr, it appears Las Vegas will cut the QB.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Liz Scott finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and No. 16 Oklahoma breezed to its fourth straight win with an 85-68 victory over Kansas State. UNDATED (AP) — New Mexico State has called off the rest of its men’s basketball season after reviewing a police report that cited three players for false imprisonment, harassment and criminal sexual contact against a teammate. In a statement, chancellor Dan Arvizu said the action was needed after receiving additional details of reports related to hazing allegations against players. KTSM-TV in El Paso, Texas, obtained what it said was a redacted police report with none of the players named. The station said the report detailed the victim telling investigators that on Feb. 6, three members of the team held down the victim, removed his clothing exposing his buttocks and began to hit him in the buttocks, The victim also said the players touched his scrotum.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Patrick Mahomes shook off an ankle injury, turned back into a magician and pulled out another comeback on the biggest stage to help the Kansas City Chiefs win their second Super Bowl in four years.

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and scrambled 26 yards on the go-ahead drive before Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Mahomes and Hurts excelled in the first Super Bowl matchup featuring two Black starting QBs. But Mahomes, the two-time AP NFL MVP, turned it up in the second half after reaggravating a sprained right ankle.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who couldn't win the big game in Philadelphia, beat his former team to earn his second ring with Mahomes and the Chiefs.

With the score tied at 35-35, the Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown with under two minutes left so they could get the ball back. But Jerick McKinnon slid at the 2, forcing the Eagles to use their last timeout.

After Mahomes took a knee two times, Butker nailed his kick, sending thousands of red-clad Chiefs fans into a frenzy.

The Chiefs won their second Super Bowl following the 2019 season, 50 years after the first one. It took just three years to get another Lombardi.

Chiefs fans were outnumbered in the stadium, but they did their part to silence the boisterous Philly fans with the tomahawk chop chant.

Down 24-14 with a limping Mahomes, the Chiefs followed up Rihanna's electrifying halftime performance with a sensational offensive outburst.

Mahomes, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the divisional round, hurt it again on a 3-yard scramble late in the second quarter. He limped off the field but showed no ill effects on Kansas City's next possession.

Mahomes slipped — several players lost their footing on the natural grass surface — in the pocket yet somehow regained his balance and scrambled 14 yards to the Eagles 4, setting up Isiah Pacheco's 1-yard TD run that cut the deficit to 24-21.

After Jake Elliott's 33-yard field goal extended Philadelphia's lead to 27-21, the Chiefs struck again.

Mahomes tossed a 5-yard TD pass to a wide-open Kardarius Toney to give Kansas City its first lead, 28-27, early in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs tightened up their defense, forcing Philly to punt. Then Toney returned a line-drive kick 65 yards to the Eagles 5 for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.

On third down from the 4, Mahomes connected with Skyy Moore to extend their lead to 35-27. Moore also was wide open on the play.

Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard gain to the Chiefs and ran in for his third score of the game. He also ran in for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 35-35 with 5:15 to go.

As "Fly! Eagles! Fly!" reverberated throughout the stadium, Mahomes and the Chiefs went back to work.

The 27-year-old Mahomes became the third player to win his second NFL MVP award before age 28. He also became the youngest QB to start three Super Bowls. Then, Mahomes became the first player to win the Super Bowl the same season he was MVP after nine straight players lost.

Just five years after winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history, the Eagles came close with a new coach — Nick Sirianni — and new quarterback — Hurts.

Hurts set a Super Bowl record with 70 yards rushing and tied a record with three rushing scores.

The Eagles marched 75 yards down the field with Hurts scoring from the 1 for a 7-0 lead, and controlled the ball for almost 22 minutes in the first half.

Hurts, who missed two games late in the season with a shoulder injury, had no trouble throwing a perfect deep ball to A.J. Brown, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead with a 45-yard connection on the first play of the second quarter.

But Hurts then made a rare mistake on the next drive when he fumbled without being hit while scrambling away from pressure. Nick Bolton picked it up and raced 36 yards for a score that made it 14-14. Hurts had just eight turnovers this season, six picks and two fumbles.

He took off for 14 yards on the first play after the fumble. On fourth-and-5 from Chiefs 44, Hurts ran 28 yards. He finished off the drive with a 4-yard TD run to put Philadelphia ahead 21-14.

Elliott kicked a 35-yard field goal to send the Eagles into halftime leading 24-14.

Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce on an 18-yard TD pass in the right corner to tie it at 7-7 in the first quarter. The Chiefs' All-Pro tight end and Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce became the first set of brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Their mom, Donna Kelce, wore a half-red, half-green jersey with No. 87 on the front for Travis and No. 62 on the back for Jason. She sat in a suite between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Damar Hamlin.

Eagles fans turned State Farm Stadium into a sea of green, chanting "E-A-G-L-E-S!" and singing the team's fight song after each score. But they left disappointed.

Reid won more games than any coach in team history during 14 seasons with the Eagles but the one knock against him was that he couldn't win the big one. Reid finally earned his ring with the Chiefs when they beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl following the 2019 season. They went back the next year and lost to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The first Super Bowl involving both No. 1 seeds since the Eagles beat the Patriots in February 2018 lived up to its hype. It was the third-highest scoring Super Bowl and the Eagles scored the most points by a losing team.

Plenty of celebrities were the Eagles fans wearing, including Bradley Cooper and Kevin Hart, who wore a Reggie White No. 92 jersey.

Paul McCartney and LeBron James also were in the crowd of 67,827.

🏀 MBB: Shockers rally for double-overtime win over SMU

MANHATTAN –&nbsp;K-State looked to collect its third win over a ranked opponent this season, but (16/13) Oklahoma held by the Wildcats with a 85-68 win at Bramlage Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

K-State (14-11, 3-9 Big 12) saw four players reach double digits and were led by former Sooner Gabby Gregory with a game-high 24 points on 6-of-19 shooting and a 10-of-11 effort from the foul line. This was Gregory’s 15th&nbsp;game this season with 20 or more points, most in the Big 12. Gregory also hauled in six rebounds and dished out three assists in 40 minutes of action.
