ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. tripled in front of the hometown crowd, then really turned on the speed with two stolen bases to start a four-run inning for Kansas City.

The son of former Texas pitcher Bobby Witt helped the Royals to season highs in runs and hits as they avoided a three-game sweep with a 10-1 rout of the Rangers on Wednesday night.

The RBI triple was among three hits for the younger Witt, and his three steals overall were a career high as the Royals ended a three-game losing streak.

“There’s going to be some times this year when he’s going to beat out some routine ground balls,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I haven’t looked at the time, but those plays are a lot closer than they should be when he hits a ground ball. He’s going to score some runs single-handedly for us.”

MJ Melendez drove in three runs to back another strong outing from Brad Keller, Vinnie Pasquantino homered and the Royals had three consecutive run-scoring singles — the last of their 14 hits — in the four-run seventh after coming in with .190 team batting average while scoring 2.8 runs per game.

The Rangers had their second three-game winning streak of the season stopped on the day they announced star shortstop Corey Seager would miss at least four weeks with a hamstring strain.

“They’re not fun days,” Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. “You’re going to have them during a season. I always say, these games are games you flush out, put behind you.”

Witt led off the seventh with a single and stole second and third before Franmil Reyes’ RBI single. Edward Olivares drove in another, and Michael Massey brought home two off reliever Taylor Hearn.

Keller (2-1) didn't allow a run after giving up Nathaniel Lowe's first-inning homer, leaving after his two-out walk in the seventh ended a streak of 10 consecutive batters retired.

The right-hander, who gave up three hits and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, has half of Kansas City's four victories without allowing more than two runs in any of his three starts.

It was Keller's 18th consecutive start with a decision, the longest streak in the majors in three years and longest for the Royals since Tim Belcher's 21-start streak in 1996-97.

“The breaking ball was outstanding,” Quatraro said. “You can tell, even when he was pulling the fastball a little bit, he’d get back in the count with the breaking ball and got bad swings.”

Melendez lined a tiebreaking two-run double into the gap in right-center for a 3-1 lead in the second and an RBI single in the fourth before scoring on Witt's triple into the right field corner.

Nathan Eovaldi (1-2), one of three free agent additions to the Texas rotation, allowed 10 hits and six runs with seven strikeouts and a pitch clock violation over five innings in a second consecutive loss.

Josh Smith started in place of Seager, who was injured running the bases a night earlier, and went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts from the second spot in the order normally occupied by the three-time All-Star.

Kansas City built a 6-1 lead with a big boost from four run-scoring hits with two out. The clutch hits came a night after an 8-5 extra-inning loss in which the Royals went 4 for 20 with runners in scoring position, their most such at-bats in six years.

“It was just a matter of time for when it was going to break open for sure,” Witt said. “They were great at-bats, just not getting the results. So then, now you get results with those at-bats and this is the outcome.”

Both teams are off Thursday going into three-game weekend series. Kansas City RHP Brady Singer (1-0, 4.91 ERA) is scheduled to face Atlanta at home. Texas LHP Martín Pérez (1-1, 2.53) is set for the first meeting of the season with Houston.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas has won nine of their last 10 games, including an 11-7 victory against Texas Southern on Wednesday to complete a two-game series sweep of the Tigers. Kansas remained undefeated at Hoglund Ballpark this season, improving to 7-0 on the year. The Jayhawks are one of seven teams in NCAA Division I baseball to still be undefeated at home this season.

Kansas (17-15, 5-4 Big 12) used a six-run first inning to take a lead that it would never relinquish. Junior pitcher Hunter Cashero tossed six innings for the Jayhawks in his start and allowed only three runs to record his first career win.

After a Texas Southern home run in the top of the first, Kansas responded in a big way in the bottom half of the opening inning. Freshman Kodey Shojinaga hit an RBI single to score Jackson Kline and tie the game at 1-1. In the ensuing at-bat, sophomore Luke Leto singled home junior Janson Reeder to give the Jayhawks the lead.

Later in the frame, Kansas hit back-to-back run-scoring doubles. Redshirt sophomores Sam Hunt and Jackson Cobb each doubled with Hunt’s double scoring two runs and Cobb’s scoring one. The sixth and final run of the inning came on a double steal with Cobb coming home to score after the ball was thrown to second base. All six runs came with two outs and gave the Jayhawks a 6-1 advantage after an inning.

Kansas added two runs in the third, both on RBI groundouts. Kline scored Cobb, and redshirt sophomore Mike Koszewski scored Michael Brooks on his RBI groundout, as Kansas pushed its lead to 8-1.

Texas Southern (21-14, 7-5 SWAC) scored one run in the fourth and one run in the sixth to trim their deficit to 8-3. A sacrifice fly in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth cut it to a five-run margin. Cashero ended his day by inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play in the sixth.

Sophomore Stone Evers entered in relief of Cashero in the seventh. Evers pitched two scoreless innings without surrendering a hit.

Kansas extended its lead in the seventh and eighth innings. Brooks hit an RBI single in the seventh to score Leto and bring the score to 9-3. Then, in the eighth Shojinaga hit a 2-out, 2-run homer to left field to give Kansas an 11-3 edge.

The Tigers tacked on four runs in the ninth to tighten the game to 11-7, but that was as close as the Tigers were able to get. The Jayhawks have now defeated the Tigers seven times in a row and improved their all-time record against Texas Southern to 18-1.

⚾️ Kansas stays undefeated at home; sweeps Texas Southern in two-game series

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State head coach Jason Mansfield announced Wednesday the hiring of Quinn Roche as the director of volleyball operations. 

"We are so excited to welcome Quinn Roche to the K-State Volleyball family," said Mansfield about his recent hire. "Quinn comes to our program with great integrity, selflessness and a strong work ethic." "She has had a wonderful opportunity to be mentored by some of the best director of operations in the country and we are all excited for her to help our program continue to grow in a positive direction," said Mansfield. As the director of volleyball operations, Roche will be in the forefront of the volleyball program's recruiting efforts as well as managing the team's travel and summer camps. Roche comes to Manhattan after serving as the volleyball operations graduate assistant at the University of Washington alongside Mansfield in the 2022 season. Roche helped coordinate team travel and recruiting during her time with the Huskies. "I'm very excited to be here and get started," said Roche. "I've always had a lot of respect for K-State Athletics and can't wait to get to know all the student-athletes. I was lucky enough to work with Coach Mansfield at UW and am grateful to continue working with him. I'm also looking forward to working with Coach Astor, Coach Fonoti, and all the great support staff." Prior to working with the UW volleyball program, Roche spent two years as a marketing and fan outreach intern in the athletics department where she assisted in the promotional efforts of multiple sports. She coordinated and assembled the UW Women's Basketball Virtual Assembly Field Trip Day for elementary students in the area during the CoVID-19 pandemic. A native of Belchertown, Mass., Roche graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's in business administration from UW in June 2022. WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— Wichita State athletics announced on Tuesday that head women's basketball coach Keitha Adams has resigned from her position for the same job at UTEP. Adams served as the head coach of the Shockers for the past six seasons, accumulating an overall record of 80-93.

Adams will return to El Paso as the all-time winningest coach in UTEP women's basketball history after serving as the Miners' head coach from 2001-2017 where she went 284-209.&nbsp;

“Today is a very special and unique day for me. I’m thrilled and grateful to be returning as the head women’s basketball coach at UTEP,” Adams said.  “The love I have for this University, community, and program runs deep in my soul.  I want to thank President Heather Wilson and Director of Athletics Jim Senter for this opportunity.  I’d also like to thank committee members Jeff Darby, Daniel Garcia, Julie Levesque, Charley Thrash and Taylor Vena for their support in this process.”

Adams will be re-introduced as the UTEP coach on Wednesday afternoon with a 2 p.m. press conference.

“I’m excited to meet with the players and start working towards next season.  I look forward to coaching again in the greatest basketball venue in the country, the Don Haskins Center, and making more special memories,” Adams said. “I can’t wait to get started with the team, connecting with Miner fans, and reconnecting with El Paso.”

WICHITA, Kan.—In front of a record-breaking crowd of 8,506 fans at Riverfront Stadium, the Wichita Wind Surge sealed its home opener against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Surge scored an unanswered run in the first after Jake Rucker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Brooks Lee. The Naturals tied it up in the fifth on a solo shot from Luca Tresh.

The Surge took the lead, 2-1 in the eighth inning, taking advantage of two Naturals errors. Brooks Lee walked and scored on a wild pitch. Pat Winkel then walked, scoring Yoyner Fajardo.

RHP pitcher Carlos Luna made his debut with the Surge Tuesday evening. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out 10 out of 18 batters. He allowed one run and one hit.

LHP Kody Funderburk pitched 2.0 innings. He struck out three, walked one and allowed two hits. RHP Alex Scherff got the win. He pitched 1.1 innings and struck out two.

⚾ Wind Surge win home opener in front of huge crowd

MAIZE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team dropped two games at Maize South on Tuesday evening in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play. The Salthawks dropped the opener 7-6 in eight innings before losing the second game, 16-1 in four innings.

The Salthawks scored first in game one when Bradyn Rodriguez homered to left field to give Hutch a 2-0 lead. Maize South scored a single run in the second to pull within 2-1, before the Salthawks scored in the third to lead 3-1. Maize South took advantage of a Hutch error and plated three runs in the third to lead 4-3 after three.&nbsp;

Hutchinson quickly regained the lead with a three-spot of their own in the top of the fourth. The Mavericks scored two in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at six. Bentley Eckhoff faced a runner at third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and was able to escape to send the game to extras.&nbsp;

After the Salthawks failed to score in the top of the eighth, Maize South came to bat. The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out and the game-winning run 90-feet away. Payton Akers proved to be the hero for the Mavericks, as he laid down a perfectly placed suicide squeeze bunt down the first base line to give Maize South the 7-6 win.

The Salthawks scored first again in game two with a single run in the top of the first, but the Maize South offense exploded for five runs in each of the first two innings, two in the third and four in the fourth to win the game via the run-rule. The Mavericks outhit the Salthawks 13-2, while Hutchinson committed four more errors defensively.

The Salthawks return to Hobart-Detter Field on Friday when they will host the Campus Colts. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be watched and heard on Hutch Post, as well as the NFHS Network.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas has now won eight of its last nine games as the Jayhawks defeated the Texas Southern Tigers in the second annual Buck O’Neil Classic at Legends Field&nbsp;on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-5. Kansas has won both years of the Buck O’Neil Classic.

Kansas (16-15, 5-4 Big 12) hit three home runs on Tuesday evening in a night that honored Buck O’Neil and Negro League baseball. Sophomore Chase Jans, freshman Kodey Shojinaga and redshirt sophomore Jackson Cobb each homered in the contest. The home run was the first of Cobb’s career.

The Jayhawks would get on the board first, as Shojinaga blasted a solo home run over the left-field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Kansas would tack on another run on a fielding error&nbsp;and added one more in the second on a sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore Michael Brooks to bring in sophomore Luke Leto and extend the Jayhawks’ lead to 3-0.

Texas Southern (21-13, 7-5 SWAC) would scratch two runs across on a fielding error in the fourth inning to cut the Kansas lead to 3-2.

The Jayhawks would answer back in the bottom half of the inning, as Brooks collected another RBI with a single to score Leto and push the lead to 4-2.

Kansas scored&nbsp;another run in the fifth, as junior Janson Reeder hit an RBI single off the pitcher that allowed Jans to score from second base and give Kansas a 5-2 advantage.

The Jayhawks would face some trouble in the top of the sixth, with two on and one out, but junior Thaniel Trumper was able to induce a double play lineout to first baseman Cole Elvis. The double play helped the Jayhawks escape the inning without surrendering a run.

Redshirt sophomore Jackson Cobb added to the Kansas lead, as he hit his first career home run over the right field wall to extend the lead to 6-2 for Kansas. The Jayhawks weren’t done in their half of the sixth, as Jans blasted a solo home run of his own. The homer was the fourth of the year for Jans and made the score 7-2.

Jans drove in another run in the eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle to score Brooks. The RBI hit was Jans’ second RBI of the game.

The Tigers picked up three runs in the ninth on a home run, but that was as close as Texas Southern would get.

Freshman Karter Muck started the game for the Jayhawks and allowed two unearned runs in three innings of work. Muck also struck out four batters. Junior Kolby Dougan entered the game in relief for Muck and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit, while striking out three batters. Dougan earned the win to improve to 2-0 this season.

Lindstrom wins the Jayhawk No. 2 individual title with a three-round 8 under par 205. Marco Anderson comes in second with a 4 under par 209.

The return of the two starters provides experience to a Spartans roster that is primed to add two McDonald’s All-America selections in center Xavier Booker and guard Jeremy Fears Jr. The two are part of a highly rated recruiting class for the Spartans.

Ultimately Jon Rahm winning was more relevant than where players made their living. It was an example that majors should strive to have the best fields without regard to which tour a player belongs. But it's all about the world ranking at the moment. And after this year, the path to the majors will become increasingly difficult for players who chose to join LIV Golf. They would do well to play their best at majors.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten is hiring former MLB executive Tony Petitti to be its next commissioner. That's according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a deal was still being finalized. An announcement is expected by the conference by the end of the week. Petitti replaces Kevin Warren, who is leaving to become president of the Chicago Bears. Petitti continues a trend of recent hires to lead the top conferences coming from outside college sports — like Warren, who came from the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jonah Heim was behind the plate as Jacob deGrom had nine strikeouts to break another Texas record that had been held by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. The catcher then hit the no-doubt homer to end the game after the Rangers had blown the lead following the exit of their new ace.

Heim hit a three-run shot in the 10th inning for the Rangers in their 8-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The 403-foot, three-run shot to right off Scott Barlow (0-1) came after Josh Jung’s two-out walk that followed a tying RBI single by Adolis Garcia.

“That was a good one. Just sometimes you just kind of know,” Heim said of his third career walk-off homer — the other two came in back-to-back games in 2021. “We don’t get there unless Adolis and Jung do their job. That’s a great team win right there.”

Texas shortstop Corey Seager left the game in the middle of the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness. Seager was running between first and second base after hitting an opposite-field double into the left-field corner. He appeared to make the turn around first base cleanly, but then pulled up after a few steps and gingerly went to second base.

Seager wasn't in the clubhouse when it was opened to reporters after the game. Manager Bruce Bochy said he had spoken only briefly to the shortstop, who will be revaluated Wednesday.

Michael Massey had a sac fly for the Royals in the 10th after they had scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings.

Cole Ragans (2-0) retired the only two batters he faced, the first being Massey on the sacrifice fly.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks are one of eight teams among an impressive field that will compete in the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic women’s college basketball tournament, which will be held on Nov. 24-25 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

The tournament field includes 2023 national champion LSU, Final Four participant Virginia Tech, along with UConn and UCLA, who both finished the season ranked in the top 15. Kansas joins Niagara, Tulane and Virginia in rounding out the field.

Kansas will play two pre-determined opponents in the Cayman Islands, with matchups to be announced later. The 2023 tournament is the first women’s edition of the Cayman Islands Classic, which will be played at John Gray Gymnasium, just minutes away from the world famous Seven Mile Beach.

The Jayhawks are set to return all five starters from its 2023 WNIT Championship team, which finished 25-11 after defeating Western Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Washington and Columbia to win the WNIT. All-Big 12 selections Zakiyah Franklin, Taiyanna Jackson and Holly Kersgieter have each announced their intention to exercise the option for an extra year of eligibility, as granted by the NCAA for student-athletes in response to the impact COVID-19 had on college athletics during the 2020-21 season.

Jackson was a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team and All-Big 12 Defensive Team selection in 2022-23, while Franklin earned also All-Big 12 First Team honors. Kersgieter received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, her third All-Big 12 selection as a Jayhawk. ⚾ Wildcats blank Creighton

MAIZE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team will travel to Maize South on Tuesday, April 11th to take on the Mavericks. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Neill won his and Buhler's only state baseball title back in 2016. They were runner up to Nickerson in 2019.

After Salvador Perez went down swinging leading off the fourth inning, Matt Duffy ended the streak with a flyout to right field. DENVER (AP) — Germán Márquez pitched five strong innings before leaving with right forearm tightness, Alan Trejo tied a career-high with three hits and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4. Márquez was warming up for the sixth inning when he began rubbing his forearm as manager Bud Black and the trainers gathered around him. He allowed two runs and struck out four. The hard-throwing righty now has 979 career strikeouts. He's six away from tying Jorge De La Rosa’s mark for most K’s in Rockies history. Jordan Walker singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. It’s the longest by a rookie to start their career in Cardinals history.

(AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays became the first major league team since the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers to open the season with 10 straight wins, getting a solo homer from Brandon Lowe in the eighth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0. Lowe homered for the third straight game, sending a one-out pitch from Chris Martin into the right-field stands. Lowe has nine RBIs over his last three games. The 1987 Brewers and 1982 Atlanta Braves share the major league record for the best start to a season at 13-0. This was the Rays’ first win by fewer than four runs. Five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

NEW YORK (AP) — The major league batting average rose 16 points to .249 over the first 1 1/2 weeks of this season with new shift limits in place, while game time dropped 31 minutes to 2:38 in the first year of the pitch clock. The time is on track to be the lowest since 2:35 in 1984. There were 125 pitch clock violations, an average of 0.89 per game. Two-thirds of the penalties have been imposed on pitchers. Stolen bases were up 30% to 1.3 per game in the first year of larger bases.

MIAMI (AP) — Getting to the play-in tournament probably wasn’t the goal of any team when training camps opened back in September. But it beats the alternative. There are 12 teams with playoff spots right now, 10 teams whose seasons are over and eight teams with a second chance. The play-in tournament starts Tuesday, with Atlanta going to Miami and Minnesota visiting the Los Angeles Lakers. The winners of those games will be going to the postseason. Oklahoma City goes to New Orleans and Chicago visits Toronto on Wednesday for elimination games. The winners there move on to face the loser of Tuesday’s games in another win-or-go-home contest.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have suspended center Rudy Gobert for their play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 10-year veteran threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in an argument in the huddle during a timeout. Gobert took a swing at Anderson and hit him in the upper chest in the second quarter of Minnesota’s game Sunday against New Orleans. If the Timberwolves beat the Lakers they’ll get the No. 7 seed and face Memphis in the first round. If they lose, they’ll host the New Orleans-Oklahoma City winner for the No. 8 seed and a first-round date with Denver.

PARIS (AP) — A costly and complex clean-up is resuscitating the River Seine just in time for it to play a starring role in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The city and its region are rushing to make the Seine's murky waters swimmable, so it can genuinely live up to its billing as the world’s most romantic river, one that’s actually fit again for people. In a warming world, the renewed ability to take cooling dips in the river could help France’s capital remain bearable during increasingly frequent heatwaves. French triathlete Thibaut Rigaudeau is hoping to be among the first who'll get to race in his home river. He's already fielding questions from disbelieving friends who says the Seine “looks disgusting.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas senior Cole Elvis was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Elvis is the first Jayhawk to win a weekly award this season.

Elvis slashed .353/.476/.882 (6-for-17) with three home runs, six RBIs, four runs and four walks in four games last week. He hit a home run in each of the three games at West Virginia, marking the first time in his career he has homered in three consecutive games. All three home runs were hit to the opposite field (right field twice, right-center once). He posted a 1.167 slugging percentage in the three games at West Virginia.

The Vacaville, California, native and transfer from Cal has a home run in each of the last five conference games. He is hitting .389/.463/.917 (14-for-36) with four doubles, five home runs, 14 RBIs, 11 runs and five walks in nine Big 12 games this season. He also has multiple hits in four of the last six conference games.

Elvis is the only Kansas player to start every game this season and Coach Dan Fitzgerald has repeatedly called him the best leader he’s ever coached. He helped lead Kansas to a seven-game winning streak and back-to-back Big 12 series wins for the first time since the 2017 season. Elvis is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak during which his average has jumped from .253 to .298.

Elvis is the first Kansas player to win Big 12 Newcomer of the Week since Caleb Upshaw on May 2, 2022. He is the 14th player in Kansas history to win the honor.

Kansas (15-15, 5-4 Big 12) is off to its best start in conference play since 2014. The Jayhawks have won seven of their last eight games and play nine of the next 10 games at Hoglund Ballpark, where Kansas is 6-0 this season. The only game not at Hoglund Ballpark is on Tuesday night at Legends Field when Kansas hosts Texas Southern in the Buck O’Neil Classic at 6 p.m. CT.

Heaney matched a record shared by Detroit reliever Tyler Alexander against Cincinnati on Aug. 2, 2020, and Detroit reliever Doug Fister against Kansas City on Sept. 27, 2012.

The major league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, set by the New York Mets’ Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970, and matched by the Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola on June 25, 2021, and the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes on Aug. 11, 2021.

“He’s got an interesting delivery,” said first-year Royals manager Matt Quatraro, who returned to action after missing the team’s previous five games with COVID-19. “Low slot, carry guy, so the ball had that rising appearance to it, and it’s tough to lay off. He did a good job, to his credit, pitching at the top of the zone or just above.”

Garcia’s slam capped a seven-run sixth inning and snapped his 0-for-16 slump.

Corey Seager and Jonah Heim also homered off Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (0-3). Greinke gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings.

Hunter Dozier homered for Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Seager had three hits, two off Grienke. Seager is 10 for 24 with four homers off the 2009 AL Cy Young winner.
