OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida had been involved in more close games than any other team at the College World Series this year.

That changed in a big way Sunday, when the Gators unleashed an offensive barrage of historic proportions.

Florida scored the most runs in a CWS game and came up one short of the record for largest margin of victory in a 24-4 rout of LSU that forced a deciding Game 3 of the finals.

The Gators (54-16) hit six home runs on a windy day at Charles Schwab Field and pounded LSU (53-17) pitching for a CWS record-tying 23 hits a day after Ty Floyd struck out 17 in the Tigers' 4-3, 11-inning win in Game 1.

“We did exactly what we said we were going to do — flush last night and come in today ready to play,” outfielder Wyatt Langford said. “The balls were falling for us today. And that’s just kind of how it went.”

The teams play the final game of the College World Series on Monday night, with the winner earning the national championship.

“Obviously we can’t take any of these runs into tomorrow,” Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. “We’ll have to reset, reboot. But awfully proud of the way they responded from last night’s tough loss.”

LSU coach Jay Johnson said he and his players must quickly forget what happened Sunday.

“So we’re going to stick to how we prepare and roll it out tomorrow and give it everything we have,” Johnson said. “One game for the national championship. I think coach O’Sullivan probably feels great about his team, as he should with the players they have.

"I feel great with my team, with the players we have.”

Two-way star Jac Caglianone will pitch for the Gators. Johnson didn’t announce a starter or comment on the availability of ace Paul Skenes, who has thrown 15 2/3 innings over two CWS starts and would be coming off three days’ rest if he were to pitch.

Florida came into Sunday having played in four of the CWS record-tying eight one-run games. The Gators had totaled 17 runs in those games before the offense broke loose.

Ty Evans and Caglianone each homered twice, with Evans' grand slam breaking things open early. Langford and BT Riopelle also went deep.

Florida's 24 runs broke Notre Dame's CWS record, set in a 23-2 win over Northern Colorado in 1957. The 20-run win over the Tigers ranks second to that game for largest margin.

The Gators hadn’t scored so many runs since a 28-5 win over Winthrop on March 3, 2019.

LSU hadn’t given up so many in any of its 245 NCAA Tournament games or in any game since a 28-2 loss to Alabama in 1997. The Tigers committed a season-high five errors that led to six unearned runs.

Asked if there was a point he felt the game was slipping away, LSU star Dylan Crews said, “Not really. I guess you could say when it got up to about 20 runs. But we felt like we were in it the whole time, honestly. We made some pretty remarkable comebacks in our career.”

Langford was 5 for 5 with six RBIs with two doubles and his homer.

Evans' shot down the left-field line off Nate Ackenhausen (3-1) tied it 1 in the second. His grand slam off Gavin Guidry in the third was a high fly that looked to be headed foul, but the 20-mph wind blowing left to right pushed it inside the left-field foul pole.

The Tigers should have been out of the third before Evans came to bat, but shortstop Jordan Thompson’s fielding error cost them a chance at a double play and kept going what became a six-run inning.

Langford connected in the fifth, and Caglianone followed with his nation-leading 32nd and 33rd homers.

Florida starter Hurston Waldrep, who had allowed two earned runs in 21 innings in the NCAA Tournament, went just 2 1/3. He walked six, hit two batters and allowed four hits in his shortest appearance of the season, not counting a start against Vanderbilt when he didn’t return after one inning because of a rain delay.

LSU did next to nothing against Florida relievers Blake Purnell (2-0) and Nick Ficarrotta. They combined to pitch 6 1/3 innings of three-hit relief.

“They don’t need a rah-rah speech tomorrow,” O'Sullivan said. “We’re playing a very good LSU team and the winner is going to have the opportunity to be national champion. Enjoy it tonight and wake up tomorrow and stay in our routine.”

The Cubs missed a chance to get back to .500 after Stroman left the game with a blister on his right index finger, and the Cardinals ended a two-game skid after an error-filled first inning handed the Cubs a 4-0 lead. The Cubs (37-39) won 9-1 in the first game but had their winning streak halted at four games.

DENVER (AP) — Ezequiel Tovar had two hits and two RBIs, Austin Gomber became Colorado’s first starter to earn a win in more than a month, and the Rockies edged the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Sunday, less than 24 hours after being routed 25-1. The Rockies entered the series mired in a season-worst eight-game losing streak, but took two of three from the Angels, who had a 32-12 scoring advantage. It’s the second-worst run differential for a winning team in a series in MLB history, behind only the 1897 Louisville Colonels at negative-23.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman got his 2,000th career hit. He reached the milestone in the eighth inning Sunday night with his second double in a 6-5 loss in 11 innings to the Houston Astros. Freeman’s sharp line drive to right field drove in Mookie Betts and made him the 295th player in major league history to reach the mark. Freeman was playing in his 1,801 game, becoming the seventh player to reach 2,000 hits as a member of the Dodgers. The 33-year-old Freeman spent his first 12 seasons with Atlanta. He joined the Dodgers as a free agent before the 2022 season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A misdemeanor assault charge filed last October against Las Vegas Raiders’ wide receiver Davante Adams has been dismissed. Adams was charged after shoving a photographer to the ground while walking off the field. The Kansas City Star reports the charge was dropped June 5. Adams' lawyer declined to comment. Kansas City police say the photographer suffered whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams apologized in his postgame media comments and later on Twitter. The photographer said in an ongoing lawsuit against Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs that he was targeted online and feared for his safety after the incident.

LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) — Ross Chastain held off Martin Truex Jr. and won the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway. It's the third Cup Series victory for Chastain and his first since Talladega in April of last year. Chastain also gave Trackhouse Racing its first victory of the year at its home track. He led a race-high 100 laps, including the final 34. The 30-year-old had to weave by some slower traffic to hold off Truex by 0.789 seconds. Chastain clinched a playoff berth and celebrated with a burnout before smashing a watermelon. Denny Hamlin finished third, Chase Elliott was fourth and Kyle Larson was fifth.

CROMWELL, Conn (AP) — Keegan Bradley built a big enough lead in front of adoring New England fans that he broke the tournament record at the Travelers Championship despite a shaky closing stretch. Bradley closed with a 2-under 68 for a three-shot victory. He finished at 23-under 257 at TPC River Highlands, a shot better than Kenny Perry’s previous record from 2009. The 37-year-old Vermont native won on the PGA Tour for the sixth time. Zac Blair closed with a 62 and finished in a tie for second with Brian Harman, who shot 64. It was Blair's best finish on the PGA Tour.

WICHITA, KS – Wind Surge shortstop Ernie Yake was the stand-out player of the game when he went 2-3 at the plate and drove in a run in a low scoring ball game. He also had a couple of impressive defensive fielding plays throughout the game. The Travelers defeated the Wind Surge 3-1 and won the series five games to one.

The Travelers scored first. Isiah Gilliam continued to cause trouble for the Surge pitching, as he has all series, when he hit a line drive RBI single in the top of the first. Then Patrick Frick hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run in the top of the second.

Wichita got on board in the bottom of the second. Yake started at shortstop and got his first hit of the season for the Wind Surge in his third game played. He hit a double and was able to drive in a run on a beautifully struck ball straight down the right field foul line that stayed fair.

Spencer Packard hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth that added the final run for the Travelers.

Travis Adams was the starting pitcher for the Wind Surge and was credited with the loss. He pitched four and one thirds innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out four batters. Kyle Tyler started for the Travs and earned the win. He pitched six innings, gave up one run one six hits and struck out four batters.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to 28-34 on the season and the first place Arkansas Travelers improve to 45-24.

Owen Griffith has been placed on Voluntarily Retired List. Patrick Winkle improved his hit streak to ten games. This marks the end of the first half of the season. The second half will begin on Wednesday with all teams records reset to 0-0.

⚾️ Yake shines in Wind Surge loss

Still, Tampa Bay reached the halfway point of the season at 54-27, with a 4 1/2 game lead over Baltimore in the AL East.

“It's awesome,” Rays starter Tyler Glasnow said. “It's great. We've been playing really well all season and we've maintained it throughout the season as well.”

Kansas City dropped to 22-56 and is winless in 11 consecutive series, the third-longest stretch during the same season in franchise history.

“Tough game,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were in it right to the end.

The game was delayed approximately 15 minutes in the fifth inning when plate umpire and crew chief Mark Wegner took a hard foul tip by Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena off the mask. After being checked out behind the plate, Wegner walked off the field with a Rays’ trainer.

Siri opened the seventh inning by drawing a walk from Taylor Clarke (1-2). Yandy Díaz got his fourth hit of the game on an infield single that deflected off the Royals reliever to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who was charged with an error for an errant throw to first that put runners on second and third.

Siri scored on Clarke's wild pitch before Franco's sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Assistant Josh Eilert has been selected as the interim coach at West Virginia, punctuating a hectic week after Bob Huggins resigned following a drunken driving arrest.

Eilert, who has no previous head coaching experience, emerged as athletic director Wren Baker’s choice to shepherd the team through a challenging offseason stretch. Baker stayed in-house and chose not to hire a full-time coach given the limited options of conducting a nationwide search in June and the urgency of finding someone — anyone — with the start of practice only four months away.

“I spoke with knowledgeable basketball people around the country over the last week, including coaches, professional basketball executives and others of whom I trust to identify a strong group of candidates to speak with,” Baker said in a statement announcing the move Saturday night. “Ultimately what I came to recognize, was that conducting this search in late June was difficult for many of our candidates and also it put our talented student-athletes at a real disadvantage. With that said, we will conduct our national search at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.”

Under NCAA rules, West Virginia’s players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, and several apparently have chosen to do so, although they have the option to return. Eilert could be the glue that keeps together an upper class-heavy roster built largely through transfers.

“Josh Eilert is the right person to lead our men’s basketball program next season,” Baker said. “He has been an important part of our success, and he has displayed great integrity, work ethic and dedication. He has been involved in all facets of our program during his time on the basketball staff, and he has earned this opportunity to coach our team on an interim basis for the 2023-24 season.”

The 43-year-old Eilert first joined Huggins as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 2006, then followed him to West Virginia in 2007. Eilert has had a variety of roles with the Mountaineers, including video coordinator and director of basketball operations, before being named an assistant coach in July 2022.

“I would like to thank Wren Baker, President Gee, Rob Alsop, Steve Uryasz and the rest of our administration for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead our storied Mountaineer basketball program,” Eilert said. “I would also like to thank Coach Huggins for retaining me on his staff at K-State in 2006 and for bringing me to West Virginia in 2007. I’ve learned so much from Coach Huggins, and it was an honor to work for a Hall of Fame coach for the last 17 years."

Among others who were linked to the opening were UAB coach and former Huggins assistant Andy Kennedy, and former West Virginia and Michigan coach John Beilein.

Huggins had assembled arguably one of the better recruiting classes in the country from the portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

Huggins’ 16-year run as West Virginia’s coach ended with his resignation on June 17. The day before, he was charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint, Huggins initially believed he was in Columbus, Ohio. A breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 3 in Pittsburgh.

Huggins also pleaded no contest in 2004 to driving under the influence when he was the coach at Cincinnati. He was fired a year later amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the DUI arrest.

His resignation at West Virginia came a month after the university suspended him for three games for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last September.

Assault charge dropped against Raiders' Davante Adams for shoving photographer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A misdemeanor assault charge filed last October against Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver Davante Adams has been dismissed. Adams was charged after shoving a photographer to the ground while walking off the field. The Kansas City Star reports the charge was dropped June 5. Adams' lawyer declined to comment. Kansas City police say the photographer suffered whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams apologized in his postgame media comments and later on Twitter. The photographer said in an ongoing lawsuit against Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs that he was targeted online and feared for his safety after the incident.

WICHITA, Kan.—A near record crowd of 7,962 fans came out to watch the Wind Surge at Riverfront Stadium but a victory would prove to be out of reach. The Travelers defeated the Wind Surge 7-4 and lead the series four games to one.

The Travelers took an early lead on a sacrifice fly by Patrick Frick that drove in a run in the top of the second. In the top of the third Robbie Tenerowicz added another run for the Travs with an RBI single.

The Wind Surge got their bats going in the bottom of the third. David Banuelos hit a solo home run over the left field wall that traveled 408 feet. Brooks Lee then hit an RBI single that tied the ball game.

Arkansas piled on three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Frick continued his good day of hitting and hit in an RBI single and Isiah Gilliam hit a home run.

Wichita doubled their score in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough to rally back. Alerick Soularie hit a ground out that scored Seth Gray from third. Brooks Lee then was able to reach base on a fielding error and Banuelos made it home from third.

Jose Bravo was the starting pitcher for the Surge. In his first start for Wichita, he delivered four and two thirds innings, gave up four runs on six hits, and threw three strikeouts. He was credited with the loss. Jake Haberer was the starting pitcher for Arkansas. He only pitched two innings, struck out two batters and walked one batter. Ben Onyshko earned the win for the Travs.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to 28-39 on the season and the first place Arkansas Travelers improve to 44-24.

⚾ Huge crowd witnesses close game between Travelers and Wind Surge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jordan Lyles hasn't had much to smile about this season.

Lyles ended a 15-game winless streak and the lowly Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-4 for their second victory in three days against the team with the best record in the majors.

“He had a big smile on his face when we came up the stairs (postgame),” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The guys were ribbing him a little bit. He's got a lot of pride in what he does. He's handled himself tremendously well through this streak, so it feels really good for him.”

Lyles (1-11) allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings. It was his first victory since his final start last year on Sept. 30 while playing for the Baltimore Orioles.

“It feels really good,” Lyles said. “Even more so just how well we played all the way around team-wise. Just a really good team all around win."

Drew Waters, Freddy Fermín and Edward Olivares homered for the Royals, who have the second-worst record in the majors at 22-55.

Lyles retired his final eight batters before relievers Carlos Hernández worked a 1-2-3 seventh and Nick Wittgren went two perfect innings.

Tampa Bay (53-27) is 5-7 over its last 12 games including two losses to Oakland, which has the worst record.

“We're not firing on all cylinders right now,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “I think we're in a tough stretch. Wins just haven't come easy for us. Today, give the Royals credit, they put it to us.”

Rays shortstop Wander Franco&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rays-franco-benching-810b62b10527bc52c6bb8973f85f3780">returned after being benched</a>&nbsp;for two games for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rays-wander-franco-benched-60edb2d54221d7883ac7adc3a6eaa3ee">how he was handled frustrating situations</a>&nbsp;this season and hit a 417-foot solo homer during a two-run first. “There's no denying he's a really good player and he really makes our team, a good team, that much better,” Cash said.

Waters got his third homer, and second in three days, as the Royals scored three times in the third to make it 4-3.

Fermin hit a three-run homer off Yonny Chirinos (3-3) during a four-run fourth as the Royals rebounded to go up 7-4. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in his second run with a run-scoring double.

“Coming from behind was nice,” Quatraro said. “Getting down four, things didn't look great. To keep adding on was a nice thing.”

Nick Pratto made it 8-4 in the sixth on his second RBI grounder. Olivares went deep against Zack Littell in the eighth.

Chirinos allowed eight runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Royals: C Salvador Pérez, who left Friday's game with a right hamstring cramp, was the DH and went 0 for 4 with a walk. ... LHP Ryan Yarbrough (facial fractures), struck by an 106.2 mph liner off the bat of Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, was scheduled to make his second rehab start Saturday night for Triple-A Omaha.

Rays: Ace Shane McClanahan (mid-back tightness) had his next start pushed back from Wednesday to Friday. The lefty, who left Thursday in the fourth inning, threw for five minutes in the outfield.

Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (1-3) was set to face RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-1) on Sunday.

⚾ Lyles ends 11-game losing streak, lowly Royals beat the majors-leading Rays

With the Kansas Shrine Bowl less than a month away, the
final touches of the events surrounding the all-star football game in Hays are
starting to fall into place and that includes the appearance of a Pro Football
Hall of Famer.

The 2023 President of the <a href="https://www.kansasshrinebowl.com/2023-shrine-bowl.html">Kansas Shrine Bowl</a>, Donnie Bohannon
recently spoke with the Hays City Commission about plans for the 50th
annual All-Star Football game July 15 in Hays.

Bohannon said he has been working to build up the Kansas
Shrine Bowl Alumni Association. NFL Hall of Fame running back and Kansas native Barry Sanders will be in Hays, at this year’s game, to be inducted into
the Kansas Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame.

“That's been a goal,” Bohannon said, “and I'm so excited for
the city and the Shrine Bowl.”

Bohannon said a documentary crew has contacted the Shrine
Bowl about coming to Hays as part of the festivities as they film a documentary
on Sanders. 

“They'll be filming the parade. They'll be filming some of
the game (and) they'll be filming his induction ceremony,” Bohannon said. “I
can't say enough how excited I am for the event coming up.”

Sanders, a Wichita North graduate, played for the West team
in the 1986 game. Sanders went on to Oklahoma State where he won the Heisman
Trophy and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1989. After a 10-year NFL career, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Bohannon said they are looking for places around the
community to host Sanders and the film crew.

The events for this year’s Shrine Bowl start Friday, July 14
with the golf tournament. They also will have a community kickoff at 9 a.m. on that
Friday morning and then a 50th Birthday Banquet later in the
afternoon.

Gameday, on Saturday, July 15, kicks off with the parade on
Main Street at 10 a.m. followed by a pep rally at 11 a.m. 

There also will be an alumni reunion Saturday afternoon
followed by a fan fest and then the game at 7 p.m. at Lewis Field Stadium on
the Fort Hays State campus.

The annual all-star game and events surrounding the game
raise money for the Kansas Shriners in support of the Shriners Hospitals for
Children. The charity has given more than $3.7 million to Shriners Hospitals
for Children.

A pair of homers were scored in the third inning. The first was by Tanner Kirwer for the Travs who hit a solo home run and took the lead. Brooks Lee answered right back for the Surge in the bottom of the inning with his own solo home run that got crushed 428 feet over the center field wall and tied the game up.

The Surge took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Will Holland hit a high sacrifice fly into right field that scored Seth Gray from third base.

Robbie Tenerowicz gave Arkansas the lead back for the final lead change of the game when he hit a two-run home run over the left field wall. The Travs added two more runs in the top of the eighth off of a throwing error and an RBI single by Leo Rivas.

Wind Surge starting pitcher, Carlos Luna, pitched four and one third innings, allowed three runs on nine hits, struck out three batters and caught a runner stealing. He suffered the loss for Wichita. Emerson Hancock started for the Travelers and earned the win. He pitched six full innings and gave up two runs on seven hits.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to 28-38 on the season and the first place Arkansas Travelers improve to 43-24. The Travs clinched the first half division title.

NOTES: The Wind Surge placed RHP Owen Griffith on injured list. Patrick Winkel extended his hitting streak to eight games.

For one California family, it was a double dose of disappointing news. Trevor Megill was optioned Thursday to Triple-A Nashville, clearing a roster spot for Milwaukee setup man Matt Bush when he was reinstated from the injured list Friday. Tylor Megill was jettisoned Friday by the struggling Mets, opening a spot in their rotation. He was ineffective Wednesday in Houston, leaving him 6-4 with a 5.17 ERA in 15 starts for New York this season.
