The Hutchinson Community College football team will highlight several community theme days during its home games of the 2023 football season, which begins on the Saturday, Aug. 26 in Corsicana, Texas against Navarro College.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons' home opener will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 against Ellsworth at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragon Athletic Department has announced its five themes for the five home games for Blue Dragon football.

Teachers, military and first responders appreciation will be the three of theme nights during Blue Dragon football games, celebrating and honoring education and those who protect the communities. Below are the scheduled theme nights for Blue Dragon football:

The Blue Dragons open their 2023 slate in Texas against the Navarro Bulldogs. Hutchinson defeated Navarro 42-0 in last year's season opener in Hutchinson as the Bulldogs went on to finish No. 15 in the country in the final NJCAA Division I rankings.

🏈 HutchCC releases themes for Blue Dragon home games

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to play Patrick Mahomes and the rest of their starters for the first half of their preseason game in Arizona, where they were last seen walking off the field hoisting their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said upon wrapping up training camp at Missouri Western on Thursday that the starters would get the first half and backups would split the second half. That's in line with what Reid has done since the league trimmed the preseason to three games and is designed to help Mahomes and the rest of his guys get ready for the speed of the regular season.

“They have to get ready for the game,” Reid said ahead of Saturday night's game against the Cardinals, “and at the same time, I think it's tough going into the first game — the first regular-season game. It's going to be fast, much faster than you can present in practice. So this is at least another step up from that, another kick up speed-wise to the game.”

Mahomes and the starters played only one series in their preseason opener in New Orleans, putting together a promising drive that ultimately stalled near midfield on a failed fourth-and-short conversion attempt. The second preseason game is closer to a dress rehearsal for their Sept. 7 opener against Detroit, which is why Mahomes will play into the second quarter.

Nevertheless, Reid acknowledged a balancing act between preparing for the season and the risk of injury in a preseason game.

“That's all part of the game," he said.

The Chiefs need look no further than last season's playoffs for proof that injuries can happen suddenly.

Mahomes was twisted to the turf in the divisional round against Jacksonville, sustaining a high ankle sprain that he had to manage the rest of their Super Bowl run; he even aggravated it in the championship win over Philadelphia, limping through most of the second half.

Even if Mahomes doesn't necessarily need the preseason reps, the rest of the Chiefs offense probably does.

They allowed both of their starting offensive tackles to leave in free agency, and Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith are still getting comfortable as the replacements. They also lost veteran wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman, which means the Chiefs could lean heavily on two players yet to take a regular-season snap in Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross.

“I thought those guys got better and better (in camp),” Mahomes said of his wide receivers Thursday. “They learned how to finish and keep that mentality throughout practice. They have a lot of talent but you have to learn how to be consistent every day, and I thought they got better and better at that as they went.”

Mahomes also was pleased with the way Taylor and Smith have worked with perhaps the league's best interior offensive line, anchored by Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey with guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith on either side of him.

“The offensive line did a great job throughout camp just battling,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes was asked Thursday how he would feel stepping on the field in Arizona, where the Chiefs rallied to beat the Eagles in February. But in typical fashion, Mahomes preferred to talk about what the Chiefs must do to get back to the Super Bowl, rather than look back on winning his second championship ring.

“We have a lot of stuff we have to continue to work on,” Mahomes said. “I said it after the ring ceremony, ‘That’s it.' We're going to go back and try to get another one.”

NOTES: Reid said the Chiefs have checked on the playing surface in Arizona, which has a history of problems, and were told that “it's gripping well.” Chiefs DB Trent McDuffie and K Harrison Butker were hurt playing their regular-season opener on the same field last season. ... Chiefs DT Chris Jones continued his holdout through the entire portion of camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, getting fined $50,000 for each day he has missed. “When he gets in,” Reid said, “he's going to have to get caught up.” ... CB Nic Jones (hand), WR Nikko Remigio (shoulder), CB L'Jarius Sneed (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (knee), DT Turk Wharton (knee) and OL Nick Allegretti (shoulder) did not participate in practice Thursday.

🏈 Mahomes, other starters to play first half in preseason game Saturday

The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their 13th year of training camp in St. Joseph Thursday with a short, 10-10-10 practice at Missouri Western.

The Chiefs came down the hill an hour earlier than normal at 8 a.m. and worked for just over an hour in half pads.

Head coach Andy Reid has overseen 10 training camps in St. Joseph and was once again very complimentary of Missouri Western's hospitality.

That, and the energy of Chiefs' Kingdom, who sat out in the heat for the last three weeks just to watch practice.

"Thanks to Missouri Western State University here, man," Reid said. "They've been tremendous again for us. Treating us well, feeding us well and the hospitality is second to none."

"And the fans coming out here. They've been incredible every day."

The Chiefs had 19 total training camp practices in St. Joseph since July 23.

There was no official injury report after Thursday's practice. Kadarius Toney (knee), Nikko Remigio (shoulder), Nic Jones (hand), L'Jarius Sneed (knee), Chris Jones and Turk Wharton (knee) didn't practice.

Nick Allegretti (shoulder) was present, but didn't work. Receiver Kekoa Crawford was absent Thursday, but a Chiefs spokesperson said it wasn't due to an injury.

Tight end Jody Forston, who's on injured reserve, revealed on social media Wednesday that he has undergone a successful shoulder surgery.

Kansas City now turns its attention toward their second preseason game at Arizona, which comes up this Saturday at 7 p.m. Coach Reid says the starters will play most of the first half, with the "twos and threes" rotating in the second half.

Patrick Mahomes says he wants the first-team players to get off to a better start than they did this past Sunday when the Saints raced out to a 17-0 lead.

"I just think having a better urgency from the get-go and throughout the entire game," he said. "Not necessarily (about) the result, you obviously want to win, but you want to have that mentality throughout the entire game."

Overall, Mahomes says it was a productive camp for their unit and the entire team.

"We improved on a lot of stuff," he said. "We didn't add a lot of receivers, but getting those new receivers in and flying around. Those guys here for a second year, you could see the improvements in how they practice. I thought it was a good camp. Offense, defense, special teams. We just flew around and competed every day, which is what you always want."

"You started this foundation," Reid said, recounting his final message to the team as camp adjourned.

"This is where it starts. You're building this thing as it goes up. Every week is different. Every day is different in this thing. But, you've accomplished some things here that will help carry you through during the season in a positive way."

U.S. women's national team coach Vlatko Andonovski has resigned, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The move comes less than two weeks after the Americans were knocked out of the Women's World Cup earlier than ever before. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the move has not been officially announced. The four-time tournament champions struggled throughout this World Cup. The Americans played well in the Round of 16 against Sweden, but ultimately fell on penalties after a scoreless tie. The U.S. scored just four goals over the course of the tournament. The United States had never finished worse that third in the tournament.

Detmers takes no-hitter into 8th inning, Ohtani hits 42nd homer as Angels beat Rangers 2-0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Angels left-hander Reid Detmers took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and two-way star Shohei Ohtani hit his 42nd home run as Los Angeles beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 2-0. The Rangers got their first hit Wednesday when Marcus Semien lined a double into the left-center gap with one out in the eighth on the 108th and final pitch by Detmers. Reynaldo Lopez and Carlos Estevez finished off the Angels' eighth shutout this season. Ohtani, the designated hitter whose turn in the starting rotation this week was skipped because of arm fatigue, went the opposite way for a 437-foot homer to left-center in the first inning off Jon Gray.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders gets hackles up over some of his players not joining in fight at camp

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Novak Djokovic had a short night in his first singles match in the U.S. since 2021, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Western &amp; Southern Open after the Spaniard retired early in the second set with a lower back injury. The second-ranked Djokovic won the first set 6-4, then two points into the second set, Davidovich Fokina hunched over in pain following his return and ended the match after 46 minutes. Djokovic, 36, lost in doubles on Tuesday in his return to the country after missing events because of COVID-19 vaccine restrictions.

Yormark: Big 12 had conversations with UConn, Gonzaga but is done expanding

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says his conference is done expanding, shutting down the possibility of adding UConn and Gonzaga after engaging with the basketball powerhouses on potential membership. Less than two weeks after the Big 12 announced Pac-12 schools will switch leagues and join the conference next year, Yormark appeared on the "Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast" and revealed other potential moves. Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin wrote a letter Wednesday to Kentucky Rep. James Comer urging him to send Snyder's case to the DOJ to determine if Snyder should be prosecuted for making false statements in his deposition and obstructing a congressional investigation. Raskin pointed to the results of the NFL's independent review that contradicted Snyder's testimony. Devastated Tuohys ready to end conservatorship for Michael Oher, lawyers say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A lawyer for a prominent Memphis couple with a longstanding relationship to former NFL player Michael Oher says that they want to end a conservatorship that he's challenging in court. Lawyer Randall Fishman says Wednesday that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy intend to enter into a consent order to end the conservatorship. Oher filed a petition Monday in Tennessee accusing the Tuohys of lying to him by having him sign papers making them his conservators. Oher, now 37, wants a full accounting of assets. He says he received nothing from the Oscar-nominated movie "The Blind Side." The Tuohys have called the allegations ridiculous and part of a shakedown attempt.

Cuba welcomed at Little League World Series and holds Japan to a run but gets no-hit in 1-0 loss

SOUTH WILIAMSPORT, Pa, (AP) — A long way from home and playing in its first Little League World Series game ever, Cuba allowed just one hit Wednesday, but got no-hit in a 1-0 loss to Japan in an opening round game. The Cuban team received a polite reception from the nearly 8,000 people in Volunteer Stadium, typical of the appreciation international teams receive at the LLWS. But the Cubans didn't have many true fans. As Japanese players embraced their parents after the win, manager Vladimir Vargas said no families of players made the trip directly from Cuba to South Williamsport for the game and the players had only teammates for support.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Teoscar Hernandez hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Julio Rodriguez had four hits for Seattle, including a ninth-inning single that provided an insurance run the Mariners wound up needing. Cal Raleigh added a home run and a double.

“Obviously Julio had a huge night for us,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “Probably the most impressive thing he did for us was take the (single) into right field in the ninth inning. We needed all the insurance runs we could get. That proved to be the winning run in the ballgame.”

Dylan Moore opened the eighth by reaching on an error and came around to score on Hernandez's fly to make it 5-4. The ball ended up close to the tarp down the right-field line, and Moore knew he was going.

“It was foul, so I was definitely tagging no matter what,” Moore said. “The closer it got to the tarp, I thought it might be a weird angle. It was definitely shallow, but I thought he might have to jump or get out of the way of something.”

Luis Castillo (9-7) allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out three.

“It was a really good effort by Luis Castillo,” Servais said. “He knew we needed him to get deep in the game. It took him a while to kind of get into his stuff, but we've seen that from Luis once in a while. He did find it and was able to get through seven.”

Matt Brash picked up his third save despite allowing Nelson Velazquez's homer in the ninth.

Dylan Coleman (0-1) took the loss for Kansas City. James McArthur, who made his first major league start as the opener for the Royals, allowed three runs on three hits in one inning.

The Mariners wasted no time in foiling the Royals' opener plan. Rodriguez led off with a double to the gap in right-center. He scored on Ty France's single, and France scored on Raleigh's two-run homer. Castillo had a three-run lead before he threw his first pitch.

Maikel Garcia extended his Royals rookie-record hitting streak to 18 games with a double on the first pitch from Castillo. It's the longest active streak in the majors. Garcia went to third on a groundout by Bobby Witt Jr. and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Massey.

The Mariners answered the Royals' run with another in the second. Rodriguez drove home Jose Caballero with a single.

The Royals got another run in the second on a sacrifice fly, this one by Kyle Isbel, scoring Drew Waters, who led off the inning with a triple. They drew within one in the third on a two-out double by MJ Melendez, scoring Salvador Perez from first.

“We weren't able to produce big numbers, but overall we did a good job,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said of his offense. “They had good at-bats right from the get-go. I was really pleased.”

The Royals loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but they only got the tying run. Velazquez grounded into a double play to squash the rally.

Mariners: C Tom Murphy was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left thumb sprain, retroactive to Aug. 14. In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected C Brian O’Keefe from Triple-A Tacoma.

Royals: RHP Nick Wittgren was optioned to Triple-A Omaha following last night's game. RHP John McMillon was selected from Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The Royals also transferred RHP Brad Keller to 60-day Injured List.

The Mariners and Royals will compete their four-game series with a Thursday matinee. Seattle will send RHP George Kirby (10-8, 3.32 ERA) to the mound. Kansas City will counter with LHP Angel Zerpa (1-1, 7.71 ERA).

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs decided to place tight end Jody Fortson on season-ending&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-rosters-football-injured-reserve-833263d4157e7c8f289ea99578830ae4">injured reserve</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday, then proceeded to lose to injuries three wide receivers who were competing for a job when they returned to practice following their preseason opener.

The Chiefs have had high hopes that Fortson, a former college wide receiver, could develop into a pass-catching tight end to pair with Travis Kelce. But the perennial training camp star has been slowed by injuries when the regular season rolls around, missing most of the 2021 season with a torn Achilles tendon and time last year with elbow and quad injuries.

He has appeared in 19 games with 14 catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns over the past two years.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs lost wide receivers Nikko Remigio to a dislocated shoulder, Justyn Ross to knee and hamstring troubles and Ihmir Smith-Marsette to a groin injury as they began their final week of camp at Missouri Western State University.

Remigio, an undersized undrafted free agent out of Fresno State, had been perhaps the biggest surprise of camp, and his solid performance in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/saints-chiefs-derek-carr-patrick-mahomes-preseason-913ab8a5f6db8349c8cfe88a4a3de721">Sunday's preseason loss in New Orleans</a>&nbsp;might have given him a boost toward sticking around — if not on the 53-man roster, then at least on the practice squad, where he could continue to develop.

“He's been killing it,” said fellow wide receiver Rashee Rice, the Chiefs' second-round draft pick out of SMU. “He’s going to show everybody why he should have been drafted.”

Remigio was hurt when he landed on his shoulder while making a spectacular catch down the sideline. He spent several minutes on the field, then more time in the trainers' tent, before he got into a cart and was driven to the locker rooms.

It wasn't clear when Ross and Smith-Marsette were hurt, though neither of their injuries appeared to be serious.

If Remigio has been the surprise of camp, Ross has been the feel-good story. He missed an entire season at Clemson to have a procedure on a potentially career-ending spinal condition, missed time later in his college career to a foot injury, then missed all of last season after undergoing a follow-up surgery to address the foot problem.

So when Ross caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Shane Buechele against the Saints, it meant far more to him than just another late-game TD catch in an otherwise meaningless first preseason game.

“That's the good part of the story,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said with a smirk, “and he came out healthy. That's a positive thing.”

The Chiefs had been relatively healthy throughout training camp. Their biggest losses have been wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who had knee surgery in late July but could be back early in the season, and L’Jarius Sneed, who has been managing swelling in his knee but who Reid has said could be ready for the opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas will begin sweeping renovations to Memorial Stadium and the Anderson Family Football Complex at the end of the football season. The construction will be completed before the 2025 season and represents the first steps toward a new multi-use district on the edge of campus. The school said most of the $300 million required for the stadium and upgrades to Allen Fieldhouse would come from private sources. It already has secured about $165 million in gifts and commitments. Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy are calling Michael Oher's claims that they enriched themselves at his expense "outlandish," "hurtful and absurd" and part of a shakedown by the former NFL offensive tackle. A statement from the Tuohys' attorneys also accuses Oher of filing this petition after an earlier shakedown attempt. Attorney Martin Singer says in the statement that the Tuohys hope they can reconcile with Oher but will defend their name. Oher filed a petition asking a Tennessee judge to end the Tuohys' reign as his conservators. That paperwork was signed months after he turned 18.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ty France lined a two-run single to center in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners rebounded from a blown-seven run lead to beat the Kansas City Royals 10-8 on Tuesday night.

Eugenio Suárez, France, Teoscar Hernández and Josh Rojas homered in a seven-run fourth inning off Jordan Lyles, the Mariners' first four-homer inning since May 2, 2002 at the Chicago White Sox. Suárez and France combined for Seattle's sixth back-to-back homers this year as the Mariners took a 7-0 lead.

Hernández tied his career high with five hits and had three RBIs.

“I definitely felt good today,” Hernández said. “My swing and my timing is fine right now. For me, the most important thing is I'm making a lot of contact right now.”

France had four hits and three RBIs. Kansas City outhit the Mariners 15-14, and the Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. sparked the comeback in a five-run fifth with his second grand slam in an 18-day span.

“We felt like we were in control of the ballgame, but we opened the door for them,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “They got some big hits. We couldn't put them away.”

Kansas City (39-82) clinched its seventh straight losing season since winning the 2015 World Series. The Royals have had just five winning seasons in the last 30 years.

Seattle, which had lost three straight games in which it led or was tied in the ninth, was ahead 8-5 after eight innings.

Nelson Velázquez grounded to Rojas leading off and reached when the second baseman threw wide of first for an error. That led to three unearned runs against Andrés Muñoz (3-5), who in a 42-pitch outing blew a save for the second time in eight chances. Michael Massey hit a two-run single and Salvador Perez had an RBI single.

"These guys, they don't quit," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “Those are good arms they battled back against. The ninth inning was exciting.”

France’s single off Tucker Davidson (1-2) lifted his average at Kauffman Stadium to .532 (17 for 32).

“I was looking for a slider,” France said. “I had done my homework on how he attacked guys in that inning. I figured I’d get one and I didn’t want to miss it.”

Tayler Saucedo got three straight outs for his first major league save.

Lyles allowed seven runs — six earned — and nine hits in five innings, while Seattle's Emerson Hancock gave up five runs and nine hits in five innings in his second career start.

Maikel Garcia extended his Royals' rookie-record hitting streak to 17 games with a bloop single leading off the first.

Seattle RHP Luis Castillo (8-7, 3.14 ERA) starts Wednesday night.

Plans for the district also include a combination of new retail, dining and other amenities that will drive student recruitment and enhance the campus experience for KU students and employees.

The first phase of the project will include additional renovations to, and expansion of, Anderson Family Football Complex, the training hub for Kansas Football. Additionally, the first phase will include the construction of new southwest, west and north sides of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, as well as a new conference center on the north end.Construction on the first phase will begin at the conclusion of the 2023 football season, and will be completed by the beginning of the 2025 season. Kansas Football will continue to play at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium during construction and will have reduced capacity for the 2024 season. Fans are encouraged to purchase season tickets for the 2023 season to have the opportunity to be in the stadium for the 2024 season.The project will be primarily funded by private funds from donors and no tuition dollars or state general funds will be used. Kansas Athletics has set an initial fundraising goal of $300 million for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse capital projects, which is currently under construction. A total of $165 million in gifts and commitments have been secured, including $125 million since the project was announced last October. This represents unprecedented and record-shattering fundraising results, but additional support will be needed in order to fulfill the full vision.Funding for the project will also include $35 million in ARPA funds appropriated to KU by the 2022 Kansas legislature, as well as up to $50 million through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s University Challenge Grant program. These funds will help fund the aspects of the Gateway District that will drive economic development, including the conference center and multi-use spaces. Additional funds may come from bonds issued by Kansas Athletics, the debt from which would be repaid from new revenue streams generated by the stadium.Future phases of the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will focus on the south and east portions of the stadium, as well as development of multi-use facilities to be used throughout the year to generate revenue for academic programming and student success. Although in the early stages of planning, the multi-use facilities will include a mix of amenities that further boost economic development in the area and advance the university’s academic mission, such as arts and entertaining, dining, retail, office spaces and lodging.The Gateway District, including the upgrades to the Anderson Family Football Complex and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, will create a best-in-class experience for student-athletes, fans and supporters. The first phase of upgrades to Anderson was completed earlier this month when Kansas Football unveiled a new locker room and weight room.The renovations to the Anderson Family Complex, to be completed as part of the first phase of the project, will equip the building with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center that will feature new hydrotherapy pools, cryotherapy chambers and infrared light therapy equipment. The building, which will be expanded north to connect to the stadium, will also have a new 2,300-square foot player lounge with a nutrition and fuel bar and will have nutrition fueling stations throughout the facility.Plans are also in place for a 1,200-square foot state-of-the-art photo/video/audio content studio and a 2,400-square foot in-house student-services center with dedicated study rooms and player development and academic support facilities. The team will also have a 180-seat team meeting room with full view into David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. In addition, the facility will be equipped with a 2,400-square foot virtual practice walkthrough room with a video wall that can be combined with the new lobby of the building to create 5,500-square feet worth of multi-functional event space.The reconceptualized northern entrance to campus will undoubtedly help in economic growth for the city of Lawrence and the University of Kansas. The mixed-use development is projected to amount to $2.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced spending and $1.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced earnings, while supporting an estimated 720 jobs. Construction of the mixed-use development will create an additional 670 temporary jobs, $2.2 million in state sales tax and $2.4 million in state personal income tax. An estimated 500,000 prospective students and guests who visit the University of Kansas each year would utilize and benefit from the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.The upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will create an unprecedented fan experience in Lawrence with amenities suited for all fans. The new seating bowl will bring fans closer to game action with the first row of seating four feet higher off the ground. On top of improved accessible seating and sight lines, there will be new chairback seating in the west and north seating areas and a videoboard that will be approximately two-and-a-half times larger and 60-feet closer to the field. There will be a 50 percent increase in area per seat and 50 percent more leg room throughout the stadium. Fans can also expect approximately 2,300 club seats in three different club spaces and unique social zones, along with suites 80 feet closer to the field. On the concourses, fans can expect four-times more food and beverage offerings and at least 1.5 times more restrooms.Local design firms HNTB and Multistudio have taken the design lead on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. HNTB, headquartered in Kansas City, is a national leader in sports architecture and has been the lead designer for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California and several other projects from coast to coast. In May, Legends, a global premium experiences company, and Kansas Athletics announced a comprehensive, long-term partnership focused on reimagining the fan experience at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Legends is working with Kansas Athletics to optimize revenue generation and curate experiences for all KU fans.
