WICHITA, Kan.—The Wind Surge out hit the Travelers eleven hits to eight but failed to capitalize on the opportunities and took a 5-1 loss. Arkansas tied the series up one game to one. 12 men were left on base by the Surge and they were one for nine with runners in scoring position.

In the bottom of the first Yunior Severino hit a ground ball to the Travs second baseman that got through and allowed DaShawn Keirsey Jr. to score on the fielding error. Severino earned an RBI on the only scoring play for Wichita in the evening.

Arkansas took the lead in the top of third when Jonatan Clase hit a triple down the first base line that drove in two runs. Two more runs were added when Isiah Gilliam hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Gilliam hit another solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Wind Surge starting pitcher Pierson Ohl made his home field debut tonight and got his third start of the season. He pitched five and two thirds innings, struck out three batters, and gave up three runs on four hits. He took the loss for the Surge.

Shawn Semple was the starting pitcher for the Travelers. He pitched five innings, gave up one run on nine hits and recorded five strikeouts.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to 28-36 and the Arkansas Travelers improve their record to 41-24.

⚾ Wind Surge drop game at home

DETROIT (AP) — Zack Short homered and drove in three runs, Javier Báez got his 1,000th career hit and the Detroit Tigers beat the slumping Kansas City Royals 9-4 on Wednesday.

Matthew Boyd (5-5) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings for Detroit. He struck out seven without a walk.

“He had a really good changeup and a pretty good slider today,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He can fall in love with them a little. You want him to maintain his fastball command at the top of the zone. But he did a very nice job for us.”

Brady Singer (4-7) lost his third straight decision, giving up five runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings. He entered the game with a 6-0 record in 11 starts against Detroit but allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision on May 22.

“I thought he threw the ball well, but he couldn't get them to miss his slider,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He had good movement, but they kept making good contact.”

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second. Maikel Garcia and Samad Taylor singled before Freddy Fermin hit a line drive to left-center field. Left fielder Andy Ibañez and center fielder Matt Vierling both went for the ball, which evaded Ibañez's reach then bounced off the wall and past Vierling for a two-run double.

Eric Haase tied it with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning, and Short made it 3-2 with an RBI single.

“We got shut out last night, and then they come out and get the two quick runs on us today,” Hinch said. “To be able to answer back was really nice and then we kept tacking on and built some separation as the game went on.”

Báez put the Tigers ahead 4-2 in the third, driving in Kerry Carpenter with his 1,000th hit.

“I congratulated and reminded him he's still 2,118 behind (teammate Miguel Cabrera), so he better keep it up,” Hinch said.

Short led off the fifth with his fourth homer, giving the Tigers a three-run lead.

Kansas City second baseman Taylor and right fielder Matt Beaty collided going after Spencer Torkelson's shallow fly ball to lead off the eighth. Both players stayed down for several minutes, but Taylor stayed in the game and Beaty walked off under his own power.

“That was scary, because Matt went down really hard and Samad also went down hard,” Quatraro said. “Luckily, it isn't a serious injury. He's got a non-concussive whiplash injury, which is a lot better than it could have been.”

Torkelson ended up on third and scored on Báez's single over a drawn-in infield. The Tigers added three more runs in the inning for a 9-3 lead.

The 1:10 pm start was Detroit's 38th day game of the season, the most in the majors. The Tigers are 14-24 in afternoon games as opposed to 18-17 at night.

Moments after Taylor was shaken up by the collision with Beaty, he was taken out on a hard slide by Jake Marisnick while trying to turn a double play. In the ninth, he was hit on the left hand by a 94.4 mph fastball but stayed in the game after another visit with the trainer. Adding insult to injury, after a review, it was ruled a foul ball.

The Tigers have Thursday off before opening a weekend home series with the Minnesota Twins. LHP Joey Wentz (1-7, 6.82) is scheduled to start the opener.

Kansas City will travel to Florida for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals will use RHP Jose Cuas (3-0, 4.15) as an opener on Thursday while Tampa Bay has not announced a pitcher.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– The Kansas State men's basketball team will open the 2023-24 season against USC in the 2023 Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas on Monday, Nov. 6 in a quadruple-header at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. &nbsp; In addition to the contest between the Wildcats and Trojans, the quadruple-header will include women's games between defending NCAA national champion LSU and Colorado as well as USC and Ohio State, along with a men's matchup between Georgia and Oregon.

Tickets for the event are scheduled to go on sale in mid-July. On-sale date, game times and television broadcast information will be released at a later date.

The matchup will mark the first time in more than 20 seasons that K-State will open the season away from home since a 73-64 loss to BYU at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 23, 2002, in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. It will be just the 10th season opener away from home since 1970, including the fourth neutral site matchup.

K-State is 4-1 all-time against USC, including an 80-67 win in the last meeting with the Trojans in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. This will be the second meeting in Las Vegas after a 68-55 win by the Wildcats at the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Dec. 22, 2006.

K-State has made several visits to Las Vegas in recent years, including the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the 2008 and 2017 Las Vegas Invitationals held at the Orleans Arena. The Wildcats have also played the hometown Runnin’ Rebels in Las Vegas in 2009 and 2019. This will be the school’s first game in T-Mobile Arena.

Led by 11th-year head coach&nbsp;Andy Enfield, USC posted a 22-11 overall record, including a tie for second place in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season in 2022-23. He has led the Trojans to 95 wins over the last 4 seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2020-21.

The Basketball Tournament (TBT) – the $1 million, winner-take-all summer basketball event broadcast live on ESPN networks – today announced the bracket for this year's tournament. OMAHA, Neb. —&nbsp;Mark this down for future reference. The Men’s College World Series hasn’t matched the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in 24 years, going back to 1999.

But here we have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/baseball/d1/2023/cws?utm_campaign=inline-article" target="_blank">No. 1 Wake Forest 2-0 on one side of the bracket, and No. 2 Florida 2-0 on the other side</a>. Is Omaha about to witness something it hasn’t seen this century?

Depends. LSU could spoil the plot if the Tigers can knock off Wake Forest twice the next two days. LSU was ranked No. 1 much of this season so the Tigers are pretty big fish themselves. Wake Forest must be feeling some pressurized urgency Wednesday night because if the Demon Deacons lose, they could well be looking down the business end of Paul Skenes’ famous fastball on Thursday.

No, everyone knows the real gate crashers left in town. Mark this down for future reference, too. TCU has never played in the championship finals. Ever. What it will take to change that narrative is two wins over Florida. That’s asking a lot, but then it’s supposed to be that way here in June.

But is it doable? Recent precedent is not so encouraging to the Horned Frogs. Using the past 15 MCWS as a guide, 30 teams stood where TCU does now, needing to beat a team twice to move on. Only seven of the 30 pulled it off, the most recent Oregon State in 2018.

Then again, in this Men's College World Series anything seems possible. Unexpected twists galore. There’s been a 456-foot home run bouncing around the concession stand in left field, and Skenes topping 100-miles-an-hour 46 times in one game. There have been 13 runs scored in the first two innings, but 25 in the eighth and ninth. LSU sent out a pitcher Tuesday who hadn’t started a game all season — Nate Ackenhausen — and he shutout out Tennessee for six innings. Coach Jay Johnson texted him at 8:56 Tuesday morning to tell him he would be starting. Ackenhausen didn’t send this answer back until after 11 because he was sleeping in: “I’ll give you all I got.”

So Florida has been duly warned of the peril Wednesday afternoon. Just like Wake Forest will take the field later that night keenly aware of Skenes leaning over the rail in the LSU dugout, possibly needing only one more day of rest until he can hurl his 200 strikeouts and 1.81 earned run average at the Demon Deacons. Thursday will give him four days' rest from his Saturday win. Wake Forest will be facing a Tiger pitching staff that has given up only six runs and struck 38 batters in three games in Omaha.

And there has been Oral Roberts. That storybook had to have a last page and it was Tuesday with a 6-1 loss to TCU. “Not obviously how we wanted it to end but if you’re going to play the last game somewhere, it might as well be at Charles Schwab Field,” first baseman Jake McMurray said. “Just ran out of magic at the end.”

It was something of a bizarre final chapter. An Oral Roberts balk was changed to a pitch clock violation for ball four, meaning the TCU runner who was awarded home had to go back to third, and the batter who thought the count was 3-1 could walk to first base. Later, two Horned Frogs were tagged out while both in the vicinity of third base. It was ruled a double play, despite one of the runners being knocked off the bag by a Golden Eagles infielder. And while all that was happening, TCU coach Kirk Saarloos was doing an ESPN interview, so he had to excuse himself, take off his headphones and check with the umpires to find out what the heck was going on out there.

“Just a weird game, a crazy game,” Oral Roberts coach Ryan Folmar said afterward.

Since the Horned Frogs have sent Oral Roberts home, they now assume the upstart role. And yeah, given the theme of intrigue in 2023, anything seems on the table Wednesday — and maybe Thursday — at Charles Schwab Field.

TCU was once 23-20 and had to fight for its life to save its season. The hardened purpose from that experience could be heard in the Horned Frogs voices Tuesday as they pondered the task at hand against Florida.

From centerfielder Elija Nunez: “We’ve had our backs against the wall for a long time now.”

And second baseman Tre Richardson: “That’s how we got here. We got back to playing like that, playing with our hair on fire.”

From pitcher Kole Klecker, who allowed one run in five innings in game 1 and might be Wednesday’s starter against the Gators: “It’s what we’ve been doing all season, so it’s kind of normal to us. We like it.”

And Saarloos: “We’ve been playing kind of this style or this type of game situation for six weeks. It’s just what they’ve been doing. Now that there’s a second deck on the stadium, there’s 23,000 people. I don’t think it’s changed anything.

“I think they got consistent at being consistent...That’s the neat thing about coaching 18 to 22-year old kids; it’s fun when they all grab hold of it together and don’t want it to end. And I think that’s what this group is doing. They’ve got their head down, they haven’t taken a second to look up, and I think they’re enjoying what they’ve been able to do.”

That includes winning 21 of their last 24 and quickly forgetting the shocking way their trip here began — losing to Oral Roberts 6-5 in game 1 when the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the ninth inning. That exploding cigar sentenced TCU to the trials of the loser’s bracket. It’s a hard road, but the Horned Frogs have responded by allowing only four runs and 12 hits in the two wins since over Virginia and Oral Roberts. Florida hasn’t exactly been bashing opponents, eking by with two one-run victories while hitting .215 as a team in Omaha, so there’s another opportunity for the TCU pitchers. Still, beating any SEC team here is hazardous duty and now the Horned Frogs have to do it twice in two days.

But lately, they’ve refused to take no for an answer. They have not trailed by more than two runs in a game since the beginning of May. They have pushed three of the top-16 nationally seeded teams — No. 3 Arkansas, No. 14 Indiana State and No. 7 Virginia — right out of the tournament. Plus Cinderella.

TCU expected to be in the middle of this, too. Saarloos mentioned in jest Tuesday how the team might have been close to its weight limit on the flight here, since everyone packed heavily because “we’re planning on being here a long time.” Bottom line, he said, his guys just love to play baseball.

“Throughout this whole season we’ve probably been in every situation possible,” shortstop Anthony Silva said.

CINCINNATI (AP) — TJ Friedl hit a three-run homer on a four-hit night, rookie Elly De La Cruz added a solo shot and the Cincinnati Reds extended their winning streak to 10 games with an 8-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Will Benson had a solo homer in the sixth, helping the NL Central-leading Reds to their longest winning streak since 2012, when they also won 10 straight. Jorge Alfaro’s three-run homer in the eighth, which bounced off the top of the fence in center, couldn’t keep the Rockies from their seventh straight loss.

(AP) — Nate Ackenhausen pitched six innings in his first start for LSU and combined with Riley Cooper for the Tigers’ nation-leading 11th shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory over Tennessee in the College World Series. LSU beat its SEC rival for the fourth time in five meetings and will play No. 1 national seed Wake Forest on Wednesday night. The Tigers would have to beat the Demon Deacons in that game and again Thursday to reach the CWS finals. Tennessee failed to score for the first time in 133 games and was eliminated from the CWS.

That's what general manager Perry Minasian strongly indicated before the Angels faced the Los Angeles Dodgers. Minasian didn’t directly vow Tuesday that he won’t trade Ohtani, who is scheduled to enter free agency this winter. But the GM suggested the Angels intend to do everything possible to end their eight-year playoff drought, and that includes taking the risk of losing their two-way superstar in free agency if they don’t trade him.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill is under investigation by Miami-Dade police for assault and battery after he allegedly hit a man on Sunday. The incident was first reported by WPLG-TV in Miami after the station received a tip Sunday night. Miami-Dade police spokesman Angel Rodriguez confirmed Tuesday via email that police are investigating, The station reported that Hill got into an argument with an employee of a charter company at Haulover Marina in Miami, which apparently ended with Hill hitting the man. A Dolphins spokesman says team officials are aware of the situation and have spoken to Hill and the NFL.

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-plus French player expected to be taken by San Antonio with the first pick in the NBA draft this week, threw out a wild ceremonial first pitch before the New York Yankees played the Seattle Mariners. He wore a pinstriped jersey with “New York” across the chest rather than the traditional interlocking “NY,” and he had Joe DiMaggio’s No. 5 on the back. Standing on the rubber, he fired the ball in the dirt, well wide of the plate to the first-base side. The NBA draft is Thursday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

MIAMI (AP) — Lionel Messi is expected to make his Major League Soccer debut with Inter Miami at a July 21 home game, the team confirmed Tuesday. Owner Jorge Mas told selected outlets on Monday that his club and Messi have agreed to terms and are finalizing paperwork and a visa. The team confirmed certain details Tuesday to The Associated Press, including that Messi will be signing a contract through the end of the 2025 season with an option for 2026. Messi’s contract will be worth $50 million to $60 million per year, the team said Tuesday. He cannot sign until sometime in July, after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires. The 35-year-old Messi announced on June 7 that he was joining Miami.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rory McIlroy is going on nine years without winning a major and the questions won't stop. For most players, the question is when they'll finally win their first major. Even worse is getting asked when they'll get the next one. McIlroy let another good chance slip away at the U.S. Open when he couldn't make a putt or catch Wyndham Clark. More disturbing is that in the nine years since his last major, McIlroy has given himself so few chances. The inquiries used to be limited to the Masters and getting the last leg of the Grand Slam. Now any major will do.

PARIS (AP) — Officials say French investigators have searched the Paris Olympic organizers’ headquarters as part of corruption investigations into contracts linked to the Games. This is the third straight time graft allegations have dogged a Summer Olympics. The Paris organizing committee said in a statement that a search was underway Tuesday at their headquarters in the suburb of Saint-Denis. It said it was cooperating. It would not comment further. An official with the financial prosecutor’s office said the search was linked to two preliminary investigations related to the Olympics that had not previously been made public. The official was not authorized to be publicly named according to office policy.

WICHITA, Kans.— Alerick Soularie’s impressive four RBI day combined with Aaron Rozek’s four scoreless innings pitched earned the Surge the win at home. The Wichita Wind Surge defeated the Arkansas Travelers 12-4 in the first game of six between the two teams at Riverfront Stadium after a long two-week road stretch.

The first big inning came for the Surge in the bottom of the second. Soularie got things started with a three-run double. Then Brooks Lee hit a sacrifice fly as deep as possible into center field that drove in another two runs.

Soularie got his fourth RBI when he hit a solo home run over the left field wall that was absolutely crushed 468 feet. Aaron Sabato added his own solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh the Travelers were able to start chipping away at the lead. Rozek gave up his first run of the day in the fifth when Josh Morgan hit a home run. A sacrifice fly that scored a run to end the bottom of the fifth, a solo home run in the sixth, and an RBI double in the top of the seventh brought the Travelers within three runs of the Surge.

The Surge pulled away with their second five run inning in the bottom of the seventh. Jake Rucker hit a two RBI double and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. extended his hitting streak to eleven games when he hit the third home run of the day for the Surge with a three-run shot over the left field wall.

Rozek pitched four and two thirds innings for the Wind Surge, delivered six strike outs, and allowed two runs on three hits. Kyle Tyler pitched four innings for the Travelers, delivered five strike outs and gave up six runs on six hits. He took the loss for Arkansas. Relief pitcher Alex Phillips earned the win for the Wind Surge.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to 28-35 and the Arkansas Travelers fall to 40-24. Arkansas remains tied for first place in the first half with five games to play.

Beaty was drafted by the Royals in 2011, but chose to attend Belmont University. He joined them on a minor league contract this spring, but was traded to the Giants before opening day. He was designated for assignment by San Francisco and signed another minor league deal with the Royals last week before getting called up Sunday.

“This is certainly a full-circle moment for me,” Beaty said. “This is the team that drafted me out of high school and these are the guys I was playing with in spring training. It means a lot to be here and get the opportunity to help them win a game.”

Aroldis Chapman walked the bases loaded in the eighth, but Spencer Torkelson grounded into an inning-ending force at second.

Javier Báez doubled with one out in the ninth for Detroit, but Scott Barlow retired the next two hitters for his eighth save, completing the two-hitter.

The Tigers were shut out for the 10th time this season and the sixth time in their last 20 games.

“We obviously didn't get anything going at all against Lynch,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He gave the ball to two very good relievers, and we fought for some chances against them, but we never got anything done.”

Lynch (1-3) had gone 0-9 in 15 starts since beating the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 1 last year. He struck out two and walked two. The only hit off him was Andy Ibañez's one-out single in the fourth.

Lynch threw 78 pitches — the second-fewest for a pitcher throwing seven shutout innings this season. Tampa Bay's Drew Rasmussen threw 76 against the Yankees on May 11.

“The defense was great and (Salvador Perez) was calling an outstanding game,” Lynch said. “I was just being aggressive in the zone and it got us some quick outs.”

Tigers starter Michael Lorenzen (2-5) permitted one run on six hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out seven and stranded eight runners.

“I was trying to keep my mind quiet and not do too much,” said Lorenzen, who allowed four infield singles, including three that were misplayed by teammates. “I'm just trying to pick up our guys and get outs.”

The Royals had a chance in the first, but second baseman Zack Short threw out Nick Pratto at the plate when he tried to score from second on an infield single.

Kansas City left six runners on base in the first four innings. In the sixth, Maikel Garcia singled and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Beaty's double.

Tigers LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) threw a bullpen and is scheduled to face hitters on Saturday. Two more of Detroit's injured starters, LHP Tarik Skubal (elbow) and RHP Matt Manning (foot), are set to make rehab starts this week for Triple-A Toledo.

With a game-time temperature of 84 degrees and an air quality in the high-moderate range, Lynch and Lorenzen were both working as quickly as possible. The first seven innings were played in just more than 90 minutes and the game ended in 2:11 — 21 minutes before sunset in Detroit.

“That was definitely a hot one, especially since I pitch in (long) sleeves,” Lorenzen said. “It was easy to get into a rhythm, because we were going so fast.”

The teams finish their three-game series Wednesday afternoon, with Detroit LHP Matthew Boyd (4-5, 5.60 ERA) facing RHP Brady Singer (4-6, 6.33).

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs dropped it's second game in as many nights to the Kansas Cannons, falling 14-9 on Tuesday night at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Cannons erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits in the game, while also drawing 10 walks.&nbsp;

Hutchinson trailed 12-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Monarchs plated six runs in the inning, but failed to get any closer after stranding the bases loaded.&nbsp;

The Cannons responded with two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth to push it's lead back to five, 14-9.&nbsp;

Erich Pouch earned the win on the mound for the Cannons, going 2.2 innings, while Max Buettenback was credited with the loss for the Monarchs.

Hutchinson stranded 13 runners on base, one less than the Cannons' 14. The Monarchs committed four errors defensively in the loss.

The same two teams go at it again tonight in Augusta with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. from Wheeler Stadium. The Cannons have already won the series, winning the first two games, and outscoring the Monarchs in doing so, 34-9.

Max Buettenback led the Monarchs offense by going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Jarrett Flaggert went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Monarchs return to Hobart-Detter Field on Thursday to open a series against the Newton Sluggin' Rebels. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be watched live on Hutch Post.

⚾ Monarchs drop second straight to Cannons

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team received good news on Tuesday, as big man Zach Clemence will be returning to Lawrence for the upcoming season.

Clemence had previously entered the transfer portal and then committed to UC Santa Barbara, but had not enrolled in any classes in Santa Barbara, making him eligible to return to Kansas.&nbsp;

The 6-foot-10 forward from San Antonio, Texas has played in 44 games while at Kansas, 20 in 2022-23 and 24 in 2021-22. As a sophomore in 2022-23, Clemence averaged 5.6 minutes per contest.

Clemence reportedly had a conversation with Bill Self last week and asked if he could return to Lawrence. Self says Clemence is on scholarship and will plan to redshirt this season.

🏀 MBB: Clemence will return to Kansas

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— According to reports from Kendall Rogers with D1Baseball.com, new Wichita State head baseball coach Brian Green has made some additions to his coaching staff.

The news has not officially been released by Wichita State athletics, and will more than likely be done within the next week after the three sign their contracts.

Anthony Claggett has been Green's pitching coach since 2018. Clagett started at New Mexico State with Green in 2018 and then followed Green to Washington State in 2020. Claggett <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/claggan01.shtml">played one season in the MLB with three teams</a>.&nbsp;

Clay Overcash spent six seasons at Oklahoma as it's recruiting coordinator. Overcash worked with catchers and also served as the first base coach for the Sooners. Prior to his tenure in Norman, Overcash spent 18 years as a regional scout in the Chicago White Sox organization.

Anthony Miller just finished his first year as a full-time assistant at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. Miller served as the hitting coach, helping guide the Cavaliers to the NJCAA World Series and finished as the No. 2 hitting team in the country. Miller played at Blue Valley Southwest High School and JCCC. He then went pro in 2015 and finished his professional career in 2019.

“There was no question in my mind that I wanted the seventh inning,” Lyles said. “At that point, I was thinking about eight. I made some good pitches to Miggy and he hit a soft liner to right and then Schoop worked me to 3-2. I had to come to him and he barreled it up."

Rogers hit a two-run single off Taylor Clarke (1-1) that cut the deficit to 4-3, and Carpenter hit a two-out line drive down the right-field line for his sixth homer this season.

“That was Jordan's inning, and we knew if he got a couple guys on, we had ready,” Royals manager Matt Quataro said of Clarke. “He has bailed us out of those situations before, and I was confident he could do it there too.”

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch thought the key moment of the inning might have been McKinstry's one-out walk.

Tyler Alexander (2-1) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Diego Cocca was fired as coach of Mexico's national team, four days after a 3-0 loss to the United States in a CONCACAF Nations League semifinal. The federation said Jaime Lozano will take over the national team. Lozano coached under-23 team to a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Cocca was hired in February and led El Tri to three wins, a loss and three draws. El Tri had not lost to the U.S. by three goals in 23 years.

HOUSTON (AP) — Francisco Lindor homered and drove in five runs, and Max Scherzer pitched eight fantastic innings for his longest outing with the New York Mets in their 11-1 victory over the skidding Houston Astros. The win was New York's first over the Astros since Sept. 28, 2014, at Citi Field, snapping a seven-game skid. The Mets had lost eight in a row in Houston since their previous win there in May 2011. Scherzer gave up just four hits and struck out eight to bounce back from consecutive rough starts against the Braves and Yankees. Daniel Vogelbach homered and tied a season high with three RBIs as New York won for only the fourth time in 15 games overall.

Reds' streak leaves them on doorstep of first place in NL Central

Elly De La Cruz's arrival gave fans in Cincinnati a reason to be hopeful about the future. Then the Reds started looking like they might be contenders — right now. It helps that they play in the NL Central, where everyone is one great week away from challenging for the division lead. And after eight straight victories, the Reds are only a half-game behind first-place Milwaukee. Cincinnati finished the week by sweeping a three-game series on the road against defending champion Houston. The Reds haven't had a winning streak this long since 2012.

Oliver is a familiar name throughout the American Athletic Conference, having spent the last two seasons as an associate head coach (2021-23) at Houston, and the six seasons (2016-21) prior as&nbsp;the head coach at East Carolina. "We are excited to welcome Courtney Oliver into the Shocker family," Bredbenner said.&nbsp;"She brings with her 15 years of high level coaching experience that will help our pitchers develop physically and mentally." While at Houston, Oliver worked primarily with the pitching staff and Kenna&nbsp;Wilkey, who led the Cougars with a 2.61 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 2023. In six seasons as the head coach at ECU, Oliver compiled a career record of 125-166. At ECU, the 2018 season saw Oliver bring in the nation's No. 22 ranked recruiting class, which immediately paid dividends, as the Pirates squared up against the 29th-toughest schedule nationally. That same year, ECU took the season series from USF, handing the eventual American Athletic Conference champion Bulls their only series loss in conference play. Oliver wasted no time making her presence felt at ECU, guiding the Pirates to a seven-win improvement from the previous season in her first year. She then followed that campaign developing one of the most explosive offenses in the nation in 2017, setting a program and then-conference record 64 home runs, while topping the league in slugging percentage as well. While in&nbsp;Greensville, N.C., Oliver also took the ECU Softball program to new heights in the classroom. In all six years of her tenure, the Pirates achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, which included perfect APR scores from 2015-17. More than 25 student-athletes surpassed the 3.5 GPA mark under Oliver. Prior to her time at ECU, Oliver served as an assistant coach at NC State from 2013-15, where she helped bolster the&nbsp;Wolfpack&nbsp;to three NCAA Regional appearances and a Super Regional berth in 2015. NC State finished the 2015 season with its first ever top-25 finish, concluding the year at No. 19 in the polls. In her three years with the Wolfpack, Oliver brought Emily Weiman and Renada Davis to national prominence, as each were selected to the 2015 NFCA All-Southeast Region team and later drafted to the National Pro Fastpitch. With Oliver's guidance, Weiman was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year in 2013. Before arriving in Raleigh, N.C., Oliver served as an assistant at her alma mater, Hofstra, having guided the Pride all the way to the NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional in 2012, where she was part of the coaching staff that was later named the NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Her tenure with the Pride also saw her work with Olivia Galati, who earned back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year honors from 2011-12. Galati garnered an NFCA First Team All-America accolade in 2012 as well. Oliver returned to her alma mater after spending a season at Boston University, where she coached the conference Player and Pitcher of the Year and April Setterlund, who earned an NFCA First Team All-America accolade. During her playing career, Oliver was one of the most decorated players in Hofstra history, making four NCAA Regional appearances and winning four conference championships. By the time she completed her career, Oliver owned a pair of First-Team All-CAA honors and was part of the winningest class in school history.&nbsp;&nbsp;
