The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the Jets didn't announce the decision. Lyles wins world title at 100 meters and sets his sights on more

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Noah Lyles calls himself the "Told you're not a 100 guy." That didn't stop him. In fact, nobody could at the world championships on Sunday in what has always been his second-best race. Now, he doesn't see anyone slowing his path to becoming the world's next great Olympic sprinter. The 26-year-old American reeled in the field to win the 100-meter world title in 9.83 seconds. That's a victory that puts him in position to be the first man to complete the 100-200 double since Usain Bolt made a habit of it at Olympics and world championships from 2008-16.

CHICAGO –&nbsp;Kansas scored four unanswered goals in the second half Sunday to lift the Jayhawks to a 4-1 win at Loyola Chicago and return to Lawrence with a 1-0-1 record after the first road trip of the season. Sophomore Lexi Watts, freshman Montelene Dymond, redshirt junior Hallie Klanke and junior Magali Gagné all scored in the win.

The goal for Dymond was the first of her career, while Klanke’s was her first goal as a Jayhawk. Watts, who scored six goals last season and was voted to the Big 12 All-Freshman team, scored the first KU goal of the season and Gagné’s goal was her first since the 2021 season after missing the 2022 season with an injury.

“I thought the kids’ response was fantastic,” Head Coach Mark Francis said. “They told me in the huddle ‘we’re in this, let’s just keep going’. Within two minutes, we equalized, so that was a great response. The mentality of this group – you saw it on Thursday – I think the difference today was that we ended up getting the result and the win. Our grit is creating opportunities as well, not just making it difficult for opponents. I thought defensively we did the work, especially for a Sunday game and made it difficult for them.”

Kansas trailed 1-0 shortly into the second half after Loyola Chicago’s Amanda Cassidy converted on a direct free kick just outside the box. Less than two minutes later, in the 58th minute, Watts responded with the first Jayhawks goal of the year when she redirected a pass from Klanke into the back of the net.

With the game tied at 1-1, Dymond was the recipient of a ball that deflected into the box. She was able to place it in the top left corner to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.

Then, in the 79th minute, Klanke received a pass from Brie Severns at the edge of the box and struck the ball off the crossbar and down into the goal.

Gagné scored the final goal of the game in the 86th minute. She dribbled the ball into the box with a pair of defenders chasing her and was able to hit the ball with her left foot, off the right post and into the net.

Kansas held a 22-8 advantage on shots, including a 10-4 edge for shots on goal. Severns led the Jayhawks with five shots, four of them on goal.

EVANSTON, Illinois –&nbsp;K-State soccer went on the defensive Sunday afternoon at 18th-ranked Northwestern, and K-State came away with a 0-0 draw for its efforts at Martin Stadium. The performance was the first road draw against a ranked opponent in program history. HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State (1-0-1) parried away 19 total shots, including 12 in the first half, by Northwestern (1-0-1). Of the 19 shots, only five were on goal. - Sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/murphy-sheaff/11202">Murphy Sheaff</a>&nbsp;was up to the task, as she stopped all five of the threatening attempts. - This was K-State's first shutout since September 22, 2022, at Iowa State. A pair of freshmen had memorable debuts and the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team earned its fourth-straight season-opening victory on Sunday morning against Northeastern Junior College.

The Blue Dragons scored six first-half goals and rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Plainswomen at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The game was moved up to 10 a.m. to avoid the intense summer heat.

The 1-0 Blue Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday at Garden City with a scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff at Broncbuster Stadium.

The victory was the 248th in the coaching career of Hutchinson head coach Sammy Lane. The Blue Dragons are now 15-4-0 all-time in season openers.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/marx_katharina_hedq">Katharina Marx</a>&nbsp;had a five-point game in her Blue Dragon debut with a goal and three assists. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored two goals for a four-point game as the Blue Dragons out-shot NJC 24-1 and held the Plainswomen to no shots on goal.

Marx's five points are the most by a Blue Dragon making their debut since Sheena Nicol had a four-point game against North Lake College in the 2016 opener. She is also the 15th Blue Dragon to have three assists in one half.

Edwards became the first Blue Dragon to have a multi-goal game in their Blue Dragon debut since Sydney Blackwell had two goals against Northeast Nebraska in 2018.

Delgado started the scoring for the Dragons when working on the left side of the penalty box, she made several 1-on-1 moves to gain some space and ripped a shot from 16 yards out to score an unassisted goal at the 33:21 mark of the first half and a 1-0 lead.

Just 1 minute, 12 seconds later, Mayumi found herself with a nearly wide-open net after a Marx cross from the right side. Mayumi scored to make it 2-0 with 32:09 to play. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoy_destiny_838y">Destiny Hoy</a>&nbsp;was credited with a secondary assist.

The Dragons made it 3-0 when Marx was working on the right side of the goal. She made a quick drive to the net and flicked a pass to a driving Azevedo, who scored for a 3-0 lead with 27:19 to play in the first half.

Edwards scored the fourth and fifth goals of the half. First, she took a long pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/brungardt_kendra_vdzj">Kendra Brungardt</a>&nbsp;and lobbed a shot from about 35-yards out over the head of NJC keeper Jasmine Enright with 24:25 to play in the half. Edwards tallied her second goal on Marx's third assist of the half for a 5-0 lead with 11:42 left in the half.

Marx's first goal came with 10:45 remaining. Mailee Harnisch was credited with the assist.

The Dragons led 6-0 at halftime, outshooting NJC 17-1 in the opening 45 minutes.

The only goal of the second half came from a Wyatt penalty kick five minutes into the half for a 7-0 lead.

⚽ WSOC: Blue Dragons blank Northeastern JC in season opener

BUHLER, Kan.&nbsp;— Buhler High School senior Jeffrey Neill announced on Sunday afternoon that he has committed to play baseball at HutchCC for the 2024-25 school year.&nbsp;

Neill is a three-sport student-athlete at Buhler High School, playing football, basketball, and baseball. 

He is the son of Crusaders baseball coach John Neill, and younger brother of current Blue Dragon baseball player, Bradley Neill.

As a junior, Neill was a first team all-state selection by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches as a middle infielder, as well as first team pitcher and second team short stop on the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III teams.&nbsp;

Neill hit .405 at the plate this past spring, going 30-for-74 with 11 doubles, two triples and one home run. He threw 42 1/3 innings on the mound, while striking out 20 and walking eight, with a 4.63 ERA.

The Crusaders finished 15-7 in the spring of 2023 and fell to McPherson in the regional championship game.&nbsp;

⚾ Buhler native Neill commits to play at HutchCC

CHICAGO (AP) — Seiya Suzuki and Miguel Amaya hit solo homers, helping Kyle Hendricks and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Sunday.

Chicago, which has a one-game lead fir the NL's final wild card, won two in a row after losing the series opener.

“It is such a close-knit group. Picking one another up, day in and day out. Again, we're just playing good baseball focused on the fundamentals one day at a time. We're in a good spot, we just got to go on a good stretch here and keep it rolling," said Hendricks.

Jordan Lyles (3-14) became the major leagues' first 14-game loser as Kansas City fell for the fourth time in five games and dropped to 40-86, better only than Oakland among the 30 major league teams.

Hendricks (5-6) won for the first time since July 25, allowing one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He retired 10 in a row before his lone walk, to Matt Beaty in the fifth inning.

Hendricks was a valuable member of the rotation during the 2016 World Series championship team.

"There is a few pieces missing right now, my curveball, runners on base, a couple of things, if I can bring that all together,” Hendricks said.

Mark Leiter Jr. got two outs in the seventh, Julian Merryweather pitched a perfect eighth and Adbert Alzolay got his 18th save in 19 chances after allowing pinch-hitter Maikel Garcia's run-scoring single and Beaty's RBI groundout. With a runner on second, Dairon Blanco hit a game-ending groundout.

Lyles gave up four runs — two earned — and five hits in his third complete game this season. Lyles has pitched four games this season in which he has thrown at least eight innings and lost.

After Michael Massey's RBI single in the first, the Cubs went ahead in the bottom half when center fielder Kyle Isbel allowed Ian Happ's single to bounce by for a run-scoring, two-base error and Cody Bellinger followed with a sacrifice fly.

“Had some ups some good and some bad. Obviously, the first inning wasn’t ideal.," Lyle said. "Later on in the game just two mistakes, backup sliders that left the yard, just execution-wise it wasn’t there on those two pitches, thankfully there was no one on base so it was only a single run each time,”

Suzuki hit his 12th home run of the season in the fifth and Amaya hit his fourth in the eighth inning.

Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr. made a sliding backhanded catch in the outfield grass to rob Mike Tauchman of a hit in the third inning.

Cubs manager David Ross fiill the open spot in the starting rotation with LHP Drew Smyly. “I am just hoping he can build off a couple of performances out of the pen. I think there are some analytic numbers that went to leaning towards him, there is some experience leaning towards him. I think there is the value of Hayden (Wesneski) out of the 'pen," Ross said. Since Aug. 13, Smyly has not allowed a run in three straight relief appearances. He is 7-8 with a 5.01 ERA as a starter this season.

The game lasted 2 hours, 2 minutes, then fastest nine-inning game at Wrigley Field since a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on May 8, 2005, took exactly 2:00. “The game keeps moving. There is a lot of excitement," Hendricks said. "I think it is a lot better for the fan overall.."

Suzuki was dropped from the everyday lineup in early August. He hit his third home run since Aug. 9 and is batting .343 with six RBIs during that stretch. “There was a span where I wasn't out there on a regular basis, so during that time I took some time, I thought to myself, what can I do to make myself even a better player and because of that time spent I'm getting better results now,” Suzuki said through a translator.

Royals: Garcia missed his second consecutive star. He is dealing with upper-body soreness on his left side. Royals manager Matt Quatraro expects Garcia to be ready for Monday night's game at Oakland.

Royals: LHP Tucker Davidson (1-2) will move from the bullpen to a starter on Monday as the Royals start a three-game series at Oakland. He will be making his first start of the season.

Cubs: RHP Javier Assad (2-2) is scheduled to start Monday at Detroit, which goes with RHP ALex Faedo (2-4, 5.16). Assad is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA since rejoining the rotation on Aug. 5.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City's first-team offense didn't play well during its first few series Saturday night, dropping a few passes, committing a few penalties and coming up well short of the end zone.

An expected light preseason night for the starters was suddenly becoming a little longer. Before the third drive, MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a message for his teammates.

“If we don't want to keep playing, we'd better score," Mahomes said.

The Chiefs responded with a 10-play, 92-yard drive&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1693060892248932792?s=20">that ended in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson</a>&nbsp;and Kansas City was on its way to a 38-10 victorty over the Arizona Cardinals.

It was the first extended preseason action for Mahomes, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, playing the entire first quarter. The defending Super Bowl champs never trailed and outgained the Cardinals 504 yards to 286.

Kansas City rookie receiver Rashee Rice — a second-round pick out of SMU — caught eight passes for 96 yards.

“You can see the talent,” Mahomes said. “He makes a lot of tough catches. He had a drop early and then responded well. I think that's just the jitters of being in your first few NFL games. I've got a lot of trust in him that he'll make those catches in tough spaces.”

Kansas City (1-1) is expected to be among the NFL's best teams again this year, while Arizona (1-1) is a popular pick to be among the worst. Franchise quarterback Kyler Murray is likely out for the first several weeks of the season while he recovers from a torn ACL suffered last year.

Veteran Colt McCoy is the expected starter until Murray returns. He completed 5 of 8 passes for 25 yards. Rookie Clayton Tune — a fifth-round pick out of Houston — completed 12 of 24 passes for 133 yards. He also ran for 35 yards.

The Chiefs built a 17-0 lead by late in the second quarter following Harrison Butker's 28-yard field goal. The Cardinals cut it to 17-7 just before halftime on Keaontay Ingram's 5-yard touchdown.

Arizona's Matt Prater made a 54-yard field goal with 9:33 left in the third to make it 17-10, but Kansas City would finish the game with 21 straight points.

Kansas City's backup quarterbacks both had strong performances. Shane Buechele was 10 of 10 for 105 yards, while also running for a 15-yard touchdown. Blaine Gabbert was 7 of 8 for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

“It was a good effort, all the way around,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Defensively, I thought we started fast, which is what we needed to do. Offensively, we had a few hiccups early. We've got to take care of business with that. But all in all, the groups came out and played good, respectable football.”

The Chiefs' four quarterbacks — Mahomes, Buechele, Gabbert and fourth-stringer Chris Oladokun — combined to complete 31 of 38 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns.

“All three phases, we've got to get cleaned up or that is what going to happen against a good football team,” Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said. “You’re going to get beat pretty good. It will be very black and white to our guys what we need to improve in a hurry.”

Arizona's Isaiah Simmons has made the move to safety from linebacker as the Cardinals try to unlock the potential of the former No. 8 overall pick of the 2020 draft.

The first preseason game went OK. The second one was a little rougher.

Simmons appeared to get beat on multiple plays in the first half as the Chiefs built their 17-0 lead. He finished with two tackles. Gannon said the entire defense gave up too many explosive plays.

“I obviously need to play better,” Simmons said. “I feel that each and every game. Explosives definitely are something we need to tone down.”

It was the third time in less than a year that the Chiefs have played at State Farm Stadium.

Kansas City beat Arizona 44-21 in last year's season opener before returning before returning to the desert for their Super Bowl win over the Eagles in February. Six months later, they were back in Glendale for the preseason game.

Chiefs: Host the Cleveland Browns in their final preseason game next Saturday.

Cardinals: Travel to face the Minnesota Vikings in their final preseason game next Saturday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Cody Bellinger homered twice and Justin Steele pitched six effective innings, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Saturday.

Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki each hit a sacrifice fly for Chicago (63-59), which had dropped three of four. The Cubs are fighting for playoff positioning in the crowded NL standings.

Bellinger, who signed a $17.5 million, one-year contract in December, hit a two-run shot in the first and a solo drive in the third. He has 20 homers on the season for his highest total since he swatted 47 for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019 on his way to the NL MVP award.

The 28-year-old Bellinger went 2 for 3 with four RBIs. He is batting .326 with 63 RBIs and 17 steals in 91 games.

“It’s just must-watch television at this point,” Steele said of Bellinger’s offensive production. “Any time he comes up, whatever the situation, he’s must watch. He’s always putting together great at-bats and is a great presence in the clubhouse.

It was Bellinger's 17th career multihomer game. He credited having a simple approach at the plate for his recent offensive tear.

“I think it’s just understanding myself and being able to control what I want to do inside the box,” Bellinger said. “It’s all correlated. When I get off, I try to get right back on track and just trust my swing and my ability.”

Steele (14-3) allowed two runs and six hits. He struck out seven and walked none while improving to 5-0 in his last six starts.

“He’s been so good for us and given us six (innings) consistently,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “He’s one of our best pitchers. You got to put trust in him, ride him and give him the ball. When in doubt, he’s been really good.”

Adbert Alzolay worked the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits for Kansas City (40-85), and Salvador Perez went 2 for 3 and scored two runs. Brady Singer (8-9) was charged with six runs — four earned — and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

“A couple different pitches could have changed a lot of things,” Singer said. “Obviously, I wish I would have done that but that’s the way the game goes sometimes.”

Witt singled home Drew Waters in the seventh, and Kyle Isbel added an RBI double in the eighth. But the Royals' rally fizzled from there.

The Junior Crusaders are comprised of a third grade team, fourth grade team, fifth grade team and a sixth grade team. The competitive and developmental program is for children in the USD 313 school district.&nbsp;

The teams will compete in area leagues and tournaments. The Junior Crusaders are hoping to have multiple teams at each grade level, as well.

WICHITA KS, - Alex Isola hit his fifth home run in the last five games to give the Surge an early lead they would hold for the entire ballgame. The Wind Surge defeated the Cardinals 5-4 in front of a large home crowd of 7,221 fans. Wichita has now clinched the series after winning the first four games straight. They also extended their winning streak to six games.

The Wind Surge took an early lead in the bottom of the first. Alex Isola crushed a two-out two run home run 441 feet to put the Surge up.

In the top of the third the Cardinals put a run of their own on the board. Noah Mendlinger hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field and a runner was able to advance home.

Tanner Schobel hit an RBI single on a soft line drive to right field in the bottom of the third to extend the Surge lead back to two.

Max Homa sets course record at Olympia Fields to lead BMW Championship
