ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu was suspended Friday for the first six games of the regular season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy following an alleged domestic violence incident in January.

Omenihu was playing for the 49ers when police were called to his San Jose home for a report of domestic violence, according to the San Jose Police Department. A woman who said she was Omenihu’s girlfriend told officers that he had “pushed her to the ground during an argument,” though there were no visible injuries and she declined medical treatment.

Omenihu has participated in the entire offseason program with the Chiefs, who signed him to a two-year deal that could be worth up to $20 million to help replace departed pass rushers Frank Clark and Carlos Dunlap. Omenihu remains eligible to participate in the Chiefs' three preseason games but cannot play until Week 7.

Omenihu started three games and appeared in 17 for San Francisco last season. He had 4 1/2 sacks.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas senior Mason Fairchild is one of 48 tight ends named to the 2023 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award is presented by the Friends of John Mackey.

The award’s namesake, John Mackey, was one of the great leaders in NFL history, both on and off the field. He was a Hall of Fame player who redefined his position and a courageous advocate for his fellow NFL players as head of the NFL Players Association. As a player, Mackey revolutionized the tight end position when he entered the NFL with the Baltimore Colts in 1963. Regarded as one of the all-time greats to have ever played the tight end position, he played in the NFL for 10 years and was elected to the Pro Bowl five times.

As a junior, Fairchild ranked third on the team with 35 receptions for 443 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 12.7 yards per reception. He was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection and had at least four receptions in five of the last six games, including a career-high six against Oklahoma and Arkansas. In the Jayhawks game at OU, Fairchild finished with six receptions for a career-high 106 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 17.7 yards per catch.

Fairchild enters the 2023 season with the fifth most touchdowns by a tight end from a year ago, which ranks as the most in the Big 12 Conference. Fairchild’s six receiving touchdowns in 2022 are the most in school history by a tight end.

This is the second preseason honor for Fairchild, who was also nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes student-athletes from around the country for exemplary community service, academic dedication and impact on and off the field. 🏀 MBB: Shockers win opener in Greece

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Aaron Rodgers has yet to throw a pass in a game for the New York Jets. He's already responsible for a long completion.

Zach Wilson showed he can move New York's offense as a backup quarterback, but the Jets kicked off the Rodgers Era with a 21-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame game.

Wilson, whose struggles as a starter the past two seasons sent the Jets on a QB quest that eventually got them Rodgers via trade from Green Bay in April, had some positive moments during his three series.

On his 24th birthday, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft was 3 of 5 passing for 65 yards. Wilson set up the game’s first score with a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/nyjets/status/1687261943806238720">57-yard completion to wide receiver Malik Taylor</a>&nbsp;— on a play suggested by Rodgers.

“Great call by Aaron Rodgers,” Wilson said smiling. “I have to give him a shoutout there. We were backed up then and took the shot downfield. Malik’s done great job all camp and I wanted to get a ball to him.”

Jets coach Robert Saleh was pleased with Wilson's performance.

“Zach did a good job, he was poised and looked comfortable in the pocket," he said. "It’s just rebuilding that confidence and swag we (saw) during the draft process. No setbacks. It’s all about confidence with him.”

It was a battle of rookies and reserves as both teams rested their starters in the NFL's inaugural game of 2023.

There was a notable opening-night glitch as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hall-of-fame-game-jets-browns-power-outage-ef4f17250771ffd4cd0b80ddf4e1212d">a power outage in Tom Benson Stadium</a>&nbsp;caused about a 20-minute delay between the third and fourth quarters.

Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson rallied the Browns with a pair of second-half touchdowns. Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick, threw&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Browns/status/1687297181844140032">a 22-yard TD pass to Austin Watkins Jr. with 9:33 left</a>&nbsp;to put Cleveland ahead.

Thompson-Robinson also threw a block that sprung Demetric Felton, his former UCLA teammate, for a 10-yard TD run.

“It was awesome,” Felton said. “It felt like it was back at UCLA. It was cool.”

Thompson-Robinson said he was happy to lend a shoulder.

“All instincts,” he said. “I’m out there playing as hard as I can for my teammates. I seen Felt was going to cut back and kind of how the hole was going to open up and all he had was one person to be back sideways was the corner. So I figured I’d stick my nose up there real quick.”

Greg Zuerlein kicked field goals of 54, 44 and 53 yards and Israel Abanikanda had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Jets.

The four-time MVP watched from the sideline wearing black Jets gear and a headset, giving him more the look of an assistant coach than star quarterback. On Wednesday, Rodgers toured the Hall of Fame and got an up-close view of a place where he'll one day be enshrined.

Before that, he's supposed to return New York's franchise to glory.

The 39-year-old is not expected to play this preseason — he hasn't since 2018 — and said earlier this week that upcoming joint practices against Tampa Bay and Carolina will help him prepare for the Sept. 11 season opener against Buffalo.

The Browns sat quarterback Deshaun Watson, who like Rodgers, is expected to do big things in his second year with Cleveland.

Watson went 3-3 after returning from his 11-game suspension in 2022 for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after he was accused by two dozen women of sexual harassment and assault during massage therapy sessions while he played for Houston.

Kellen Mond started for the Browns and played the first half, going 7 of 12 for 49 yards with a TD pass and an interception. Thompson-Robinson finished 8 of 11 for 82 yards.

As both teams formed a tunnel near midfield, this year's Hall of Fame class was introduced before the opening kickoff.

Of course, the biggest ovation went to former Browns tackle Joe Thomas, who waved to the thousands of Cleveland fans packing Tom Benson Stadium.

New inductee DeMarcus Ware sang the national anthem.

Both teams got a look at their respective massive tackles.

New York's Mekhi Becton played for the first time since the 2021 season opener. It has been a long road back for the 6-foot-7 Becton, who underwent multiple surgeries on his right knee. He slimmed down to 350 pounds after once tipping the scales at 400.

Cleveland rookie Dawand Jones, just a tad bigger than Becton at 6-8, 374, held his own while playing the entire game.

More than two dozen Hall of Famers, most wearing their signature gold jackets, attended a tribute earlier in the day for legendary Browns running back Jim Brown, who died in May.

Brown was remembered for his football accomplishments, and much more.

Former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis delivered the most impassioned remarks about Brown, who became his mentor.

“He became a father to the fatherless, gave hope when there wasn’t hope,” said Lewis. “I’ve never met a greater person.”

The Browns wore “32” decals — Brown's number — on their helmets for the first time.

Jets: LB Hamsah Nasirildeen (neck) left after being hurt on New York's first defensive series and didn't return. ... CB Brandin Echols (hip) and LB Chazz Surratt (hamstring) were both ruled out after halftime. Surratt's interception in the first half set up New York's TD. ... LB Maalik Hall left in the fourth with an undisclosed injury.

Browns: WR Daylen Baldwin (hamstring) went out in the first half. He was targeted once. ... CB Thomas Graham Jr. (ankle) didn't play in the second half.

⚾ Shockers join field at inaugural Jax Classic

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten has joined the Big 12 in pushing the Pac-12 to the brink.

Arizona is in serious talks to join the Big 12, a person with direct knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Big Ten is discussing membership with Oregon and Washington, two people with direct knowledge of those talks told the AP.

All spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing has been made official by the schools or conferences involved.

None of the news bodes well for the Pac-12's survival.

The boards of regents for Arizona’s two biggest universities, along with the University of Washington, had special meetings Thursday night, ramping up speculation that more Pac-12 schools could leave the flailing conference.

The person with direct knowledge of the Arizona situation also said that Arizona State was mulling jumping to the Big 12, too, but was not as far along in the process. That could slow down Arizona’s final decision because the Tucson-based school would prefer to be in sync with its rivals from Tempe.

The Arizona Board of Regents were holding a closed executive session Thursday to look at possible legal advice and discussion regarding university athletics.

Washington regents held a special meeting late Thursday night with most of the 90-minute gathering held in executive session to discuss present, pending or potential litigation with counsel. The meeting included Washington President Ana Mari Cauce and athletic director Jen Cohen, and adjourned around 10:35 p.m. PDT without any action taken.

While the Big 12 has been eyeing Pac-12 schools for months, the Big Ten — which dealt the first blow to the Pac-12 by poaching Southern California and UCLA last year —- has jumped in late.

The people with direct knowledge of those talks say no formal offer has been made to Oregon and Washington, but the framework of a deal was presented that would have the Ducks and Huskies enter the conference with an annual payout in the low-to-mid $30 millions.

The schools could also receive an advance on future payments that could increase the total payout to more than $40 million for the first several years they are in the conference, though it would be subtracted from future payouts, two people said.

That payout would be about half what current Big Ten members will receive when all its new television deals fully kick in next year, but still more than what Washington and Oregon are guaranteed to receive from a recently presented potential media rights deal the Pac-12 has on the table from Apple.

Southern California and UCLA are headed to the Big Ten next year, the same time Colorado is leaving the West Coast’s largest and most storied conference for the Big 12. The Buffaloes announced their return to the Big 12 a week ago.

That leaves the Pac-12 with nine schools — for now — and no media rights deal beyond the upcoming school year. None of the other remaining schools have scheduled regent or trustee meetings — yet.

The Big 12 also has targeted Utah to get to 16 members next year after Texas and Oklahoma leave.

The uncertainty in the Pac-12 is being felt across the conference, especially at places that might not have clear options to join another Power Five conference.

“You know, the old question of how long would it take TV money to destroy college football? Maybe we’re here," Washington State football coach Jake Dickert told reporters Thursday. “To think even remotely five years ago the Pac-12 would be in this position it’s unthinkable to think that we’re here today. And to think local rivalries are at risk and fans driving four hours to watch their team play in a road game and rivalries is at risk to me is unbelievable.”

“But at the end of the day, I just think we’ll look back at college football in 20 years and be like, ‘What are we doing? What are we doing?’” he added. “Let’s let our guys stay regional. Let’s play. Let’s preserve the Pac-12 and what it is.”

Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff presented details of a media rights deal to league stakeholders Tuesday, but no vote was held. ESPN reported the deal would make Apple TV the conference’s primary home and not a more well-known traditional network like ESPN or Fox.

The carrot may not have been big enough. The deal reportedly would guarantee schools about $20 million each per year, but with subscription based escalators that could grow that total.

Pac-12 being pushed to brink as Big Ten joins Big 12 in honing in on West Coast schools

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wind Surge left five men on base and were zero for five with runners in scoring position in tonight’s ball game. They were defeated 10-0 by the Tulsa Drillers and Wichita now leads the series two games to one, but Tulsa has already won the season long Propeller Series having won 14 of the 21 games played.

Tulsa started their scoring early when scored a run in the top of the first to take the lead. Jorbit Vivas hit a solo home run over the right center field wall.

In the top of the third the Drillers put another run on the board. The unearned run was scored off a sacrifice fly by Austin Gauthier to center field that allowed Ismael Alcantara to score from third.

The third run of the game was scored by Tulsa in the top of the fourth. Yusniel Diaz hit a solo home run over the left field wall.

The Drillers added another run to their lead in the top of the fifth. Vivas hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in a runner from third.

Josh Stowers hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to increase the Drillers lead.

In the top of the seventh Tulsa put four more runs on the board. Vivas and Diego Cartaya hit RBI singles and Josh Stowers hit a two RBI single.

Carlos Luna made his 14th start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched four and a third innings where he gave up four runs off six hits. He also struck out three batters and walked none. He was credited with the loss and his record falls to (1-7).

The starting pitcher for Tulsa was Nick Frasso. He pitched five scoreless innings where he only gave up three hits. He struck out eight and walked one more. He earned the win, and his record improves to (2-4).

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to (13-17, 41-57) and the Tulsa Drillers improve to (10-20, 51-48).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer is starting to look like the promising young pitcher that was at times dominant last season, and Bobby Witt Jr. is starting to make good on the expectations that many placed on him as one of baseball's top prospects.

Together, they're making the last-place Kansas City Royals look like a winning ballclub.

Singer tossed eight innings of three-hit ball Thursday, and Witt joined Drew Waters in hitting homers, helping the suddenly hot Royals blow out the free-falling New York Mets 9-2 to wrap up their second straight series sweep.

The last-place Royals had won just four of their first 33 series this season. But leaning on their young stars, they squeaked out three wins over Minnesota before taking three from the Mets, a club they had never swept in franchise history.

“It just shows you what we're capable,” said Witt, who got off to a poor start to this season. “The guys are really buying in.”

Singer (7-8), who also got off to a dismal start, allowed singles in the second, fourth and fifth and didn't walk a batter while cruising through the New York lineup. He did not allow a run while striking out four and throwing exactly 100 pitches.

“We're riding high and we should be,” Singer said. “Six in a row. Just keep doing what we're doing.”

Carlos Carrasco (4-5) allowed all six runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings in another poor start for the Mets. The right-hander has followed up eight shutout innings in Arizona on July 6 by allowing 21 earned runs in his last four starts.

Francisco Lindor provided the Mets' only offense with a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth.

“Our guys are motivated. They have a lot of professional pride,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “I can rattle off four or five things I was proud of today but I know nobody wants to hear of them when it’s 9-2.”

The series-ending romp wrapped&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mets-cohen-verlander-scherzer-alonso-18366d2ca50f2adf20af6202ffae3ea2">a tumultuous week</a>&nbsp;for the Mets, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mets-scherzer-verlander-trades-mlb-328a9452c1fc228ffc32e76df68993bb">traded Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander</a>&nbsp;as part of a stunning selloff that also included closer David Robertson, and outfielders Tommy Pham and Mark Canha.

Meanwhile, the Royals (35-75) completed just the fifth perfect homestand of at least six games in franchise history.

“We'll take them whenever they come, right?” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I mean, obviously we've got ourselves in an enormous hole record-wise, but like we've talked about all year, the effort has been there. The intensity of the work and all those things. So it's nice to see some rewards coming for the guys.”

Witt got their offense started with a single in the first inning, then he stole second for his 31st of the season, before trotting home when Salvador Perez doubled off the wall to give Kansas City the early lead.

The Royals continued to put pressure on the Mets with their baserunning in the third. Samad Taylor beat out an infield single, swiped second — that made Kansas City 13 for 13 on stolen base attempts on the homestand — and reached third on a wild pitch before a high sacrifice fly by Maikel Garcia gave the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Witt followed with his first-pitch, 425-shot to straightaway centerfield.

The Royals put the game out of reach with three in the seventh when Freddy Fermin and Matt Beaty opened the inning with singles and Waters took Carrasco deep to right field. They added three more in the eighth for good measure.

The Mets turned to infielder Danny Mendick to get their final two outs on the mound.

Witt was part of two spectacular defense plays behind Singer. The first came in the second inning, when the shortstop ranged to his left and grabbed Omar Narvaez's grounder behind second base, then wheeled around to throw him out at first. The second came in the fifth, when second baseman Michael Massey dived to get Narvaez's grounder, flicked it from his glove to Witt to get Mark Vientos at second base, and he fired to first to complete the double play.

Mets OF Brandon Nimmo (left quad) could be available to open a three-game set in Baltimore on Friday night, manager Buck Showalter said. RF Starling Marte (migraines) also could be back against the Orioles.

Mets RHP David Peterson (3-7, 5.92 ERA) gets the start against the Orioles on Friday night. The Royals will send RHP Jordan Lyles (2-12, 6.15) to the mound for their series opener Friday night in Philadelphia.

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico&nbsp;– Behind 20 points from sophomore guard Arterio Morris and 19 points from junior KJ Adams Jr., Kansas men’s basketball rolled to a 106-71 win against a Puerto Rico Select team Thursday in an exhibition game at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum.

A crowd of 3,174 saw Kansas score the first seven points of the contest and never look back, dominating the first quarter 25-7 in the FIBA rules game. Senior center Hunter Dickinson and freshman Elmarko Jackson each scored 13 points with Jackson and Morris leading KU making three 3-point field goals in the victory. Morris also had five assists and two steals for Kansas.

KU redshirt junior Dajuan Harris Jr., led all players with nine assists and four steals to go along with nine points. Kevin McCullar Jr. paced KU with seven rebounds and also scored nine points. Six of guard Nicolas Timberlake’s eight points were from beyond the arc and the graduate transfer also had three steals, while junior Zach Clemence made two threes and scored eight points.

KU dominated the game forcing 24 turnovers and converting those into 34 points. KU outscored Puerto Rico 48-24 in points in the paint, 35-14 on fast break points and 55-27 in bench points.

Adams and Morris scored 12 of Kansas’ first 14 points of the contest with each hitting a three pointer, putting Kansas up 14-2 six minutes into the contest. Kansas took its largest lead of the half, 27-7, in the second quarter on an Adams alley-oop from Harris to open the period.

Nine of the 10 Kansas players scored in the opening half led by Morris with 13 points and Adams with 12. McCullar added nine points, while Harris led KU with three steals and four assists. KU led 54-34 at intermission.

Kansas continued to wear out its opponent and built a 69-44 lead on a Clemence three-pointer with 4:20 left in the third quarter. Two minutes later Jackson made his second three of the game to put KU up 78-51.

The final quarter saw the Jayhawks continue their fast pace scoring on dunks, alley-oops and lay-ins as KU led 102-68 before Self cleared the bench for the final two minutes of the game.

Kansas will practice Friday in preparation for two more exhibition games against the Bahamian National Team. The first contest will be at 4 p.m. (Central) on Saturday, August 5, and the final game of the trip will be on Monday, August 7, at 11 a.m. (Central). Both games will be played at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;As the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) continues to announce its awards watch lists, Kansas State had two more honors on Thursday with senior quarterback&nbsp;Will Howard&nbsp;landing on the initial list for the Wuerffel Trophy and senior wide receiver/kick returner&nbsp;Phillip Brooks&nbsp;being named a candidate for the Paul Hornung Award.

Howard is a candidate for the Wuerffel Trophy for a second-straight season as the top college football player who serves others, celebrates their positive impact on society and inspires greater service in the world. Brooks is a candidate for the Hornung Award for a second time (2021) as the award presented to the most versatile player in college football.

A product of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Howard’s mention on the Wuerffel Trophy list is the ninth-straight season a Wildcat has been up for the award since its inaugural season of 2015. Fellow quarterback Skylar Thompson was a candidate for the award in both 2020 and 2021, while Denzel Goolsby (2019), Dalton Risner (2017-18) and Dante Barnett (2015-16) were also up for the award. Risner was a finalist for the honor in 2018.

One of the main reasons he is being honored for his work off the field is his driving force behind K-State’s Get in the Game/Be the Match bone marrow registry drive each of the last two years, which has presented an opportunity for student and faculty on the K-State campus to be connected with a blood cancer patient in need of a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. For his efforts with that program, Howard and K-State assistant head coach&nbsp;Van Malone&nbsp;earned the Get in the Game Impact Award presented by the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation.

Brooks’ inclusion on the Hornung Award watch list marks the third-straight season a Wildcat is represented and the eighth time since the award began in 2010. Past candidates include running back Daniel Thomas (2010) and wide receivers/kick returners Tyler Lockett (2013 and 2014), Tramaine Thompson (2013), Byron Pringle (2017) and Malik Knowles (2022).

A native of Lee’s Summitt, Missouri, Brooks is an accomplished punt returner in addition to being a mainstay at wide receiver throughout his career. Now in his sixth season, Brooks is one of only 12 players in Big 12 history and one of five in school history with 1,000 receiving yards and 600 punt return yards in a career. He enters his final campaign ranked second in school history in punt return touchdowns (4), fifth in both punt return average (14.6) and punt return yards (641), and eighth in punt return attempts (44). He is also tied for seventh in school history in career receptions (129), while he is 255 receiving yards, four receiving touchdowns and 227 all-purpose yards shy of entering K-State’s career top-10 list in each category.

Kansas State is in its first week of 2023 preseason camp as the Wildcats’ first practice was held on Wednesday morning. It was the first of 16 practices during preseason camp prior to the first day of the fall semester on Monday, August 21. K-State opens the 2023 campaign by hosting SEMO in a 6 p.m. contest inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday, September 2.

🏈 K-State garners 2 more Watch List designations Thursday

NEWTON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) organization
will host its 30th annual MAYB Nationals this weekend in two different states.
The boys’ nationals will take place in Wichita, while the girls nationals will
play in Oklahoma City, both happening Aug. 4-6.&nbsp;

MAYB was founded by Hesston native, Greg Raleigh, and has been going strong
since 1993.

"We started this when I first got out of high school coaching and was
doing a little bit of coaching at Bethel," Raleigh said. "I just
wanted more opportunities for kids to be able to play ball during the summers.
It kind of has just grown since then. It was never a plan to get as big as it
has, but it's been special seeing it take off like it has."

What started as one summer tournament with 69 teams has grown into more than
170 summer tournaments involving 3700 teams from at least 27 states and two
foreign countries.

the Andover Farha Center. The younger kids will get to play their national championships at Charles
Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State University, while the seventh grade
through high school kids will play theirs at Wichita Southeast High School."Numbers are way up for this year’s nationals," Raleigh said.
"This one tournament will bring in well over $10 million into the Wichita
area economy. The city of Wichita has been great to us and we love continuing
to use facilities in Wichita for not only our nationals, but also just
tournaments throughout the year."The girls national tournaments will take place in and around Oklahoma City
over the course of three days. Sites included will be the Oklahoma Athletic
Center, First Moore Church, Premiere Sportsplex, The Hive, Santa Fe Life Center,
and Solid Rock, while the championships will be played at Moore High
School.&nbsp;"We are extremely happy with our partnership with Oklahoma City and its
surrounding areas," Raleigh said. "This is the site I go down and
will be there to help run firsthand, and it's something I enjoy doing each
year."These events wouldn't be possible without officials, especially when the
country is struggling to find youth sports officials."We'll use over 500 officials this weekend," Raleigh said.
"We're very fortunate that we have very qualified officials, most of these
guys are working high school and college ball during the season. They've got a
lot of experience, and our supervisors do a great job of making everything run
smoothly. We'll have guys from five or six different states doing these
games."Raleigh made sure to recognize and thank his staff that works in the MAYB
office in Newton for all of their hard work to put this event on."We have six guys and a girl that work year around in our main
office," Raleigh said. "This time of year they're putting in long
long hours. They're great, and are really what makes this go. I can't thank
them enough for their hard work and dedication."The next 80 hours or so will be extremely busy for Raleigh and his team."I'll arrive in Oklahoma City on Thursday morning and will unload boxes
of awards, t-shirts, scorebooks, pencils and all of those things," Raleigh
said. "We'll have check in for the teams from 6-10 p.m. on Thursday night
where they'll show proof of grade and all of that. Then on Friday games get
going, so I'll be doing a lot of driving around the rest of the weekend and
