LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The University of Kansas has announced the selection of the No. 1 construction manager in the United States, Turner Construction, as the lead on the transformational Gateway Project and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium at 11th and Mississippi Streets.

Turner, ranked as the top construction manager in the country by Engineering News-Record and the No. 3 “sports builder” in the country by the same publication, has a longstanding and successful relationship with the University of Kansas, completing more than 25 projects for the university, including 16 for Kansas Athletics alone.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to work with Kansas Athletics and Multistudio on this exciting project that will transform the 11th and Mississippi area, enhance the KU football experience and bring additional events and economic activity to the Lawrence community,” said Joshua Jones, Turner Operations Manager.

In addition to completing Anderson Family Football Complex at KU in 2008, Turner has also worked on the region’s top sports venues, including Arrowhead Stadium, Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas Speedway and Allen Fieldhouse.

The selection of a construction manager is the latest step in the development of the Gateway Project, which will enhance the campus experience for students, faculty and guests and provide meaningful impact to Kansas Football and the fan experience at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. KU first announced its plans for the project in October 2022 and has since been working with architectural firms and other partners to develop plans, budgets and timelines. Earlier this year, KU was awarded a $50 million challenge grant by the Kansas Department of Commerce for the project. In April, crews began renovations to Anderson Family Football Complex. In June, the university issues an RFP inviting partners to bid on the project.

More information on the Gateway Project and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will be revealed on Aug. 15 at a campaign announcement by the University of Kansas.

WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;In fall of 2022, Wichita State Athletics unveiled a 4-phase renovation project for Wilkins Stadium – home of Wichita State softball. On Thursday, July 20, 2023, the Wichita State University Board of Trustees voted, unanimously, to invest $3 million into Phase 1 of the project. Phase 1, a $9.65 million endeavor, features the construction of an indoor practice facility, which includes a 12,000-square-foot team complex, housing a team locker room, coaches locker room, classroom, team room, athletic training room, staff offices, break room, work room, umpire locker rooms and laundry area. It will also feature a 14,400-square-foot indoor practice facility containing a full indoor infield, batting cages and storage areas. "I would like to thank the Board of Trustees for their foundational investment in the long-term future of softball and women's athletics at Wichita State University," said Wichita State University President Rick Muma. "We are incredibly thankful for and appreciative of their commitment and support as we align resources to expectations." In addition to several of the latest significant upgrades, Wichita State recently completed installation of artificial turf in the outfield, warning track, foul territory and apron areas. "Over the last two years, collectively we have invested over $2 million in Wilkins Stadium upgrades to include new lights, batting cages, third base dugout and an artificial playing surface," said Wichita State Director of Athletics Kevin Saal.&nbsp;"These upgrades paved the way for Shocker Athletics' to host the 2024 American Athletic Conference Softball Championship.&nbsp;The Wilkins Stadium renovation represents a significant capital project priority for WSU and we encourage Shocker Nation to join our institution's commitment as we strive to complete Phase 1 fundraising within the 2023 calendar year." BOSTON (AP) — Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro was ejected on Monday night arguing a checked-swing call on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox.

It was an important play, too: Instead of an inning-ending strikeout of Luis Urias, the bases were loaded for Pablo Reyes, who hit a walk-off grand slam to give Boston a 6-2 victory.

“Yeah, I can’t think of being much more frustrated than that," Quatraro said. "I mean, he gets the strikeout to move to extra innings — and then he didn’t. I don’t really have much else to say about that.”

The Royals rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the seventh. It was still 2-2 when Rafael Devers one-hopped the short wall in right field, then Adam Duvall struck out (for the fourth time in the game) and Triston Casas was intentionally walked.

Urias appeared to go around on the 3-2 pitch, and the Royals began walking off the field as they appealed to first base umpire Vic Carapazza. But he waved his arms safe, and the Royals dugout began shouting across the diamond at him.

Carapazza quickly pointed at the dugout and tossed Quatraro.

“Well, obviously I thought he went," the Royals manager said. "Vic makes the call, he’s got the better angle, but I obviously disagreed.”

“I didn't see it,” Quatraro said in the clubhouse afterward. “I was up here.”

⚾ Quartraro ejected just before Red Sox walk-off Royals

The Kansas City Chiefs took to the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph Monday on a cool and cloudy morning.

The Chiefs, who had Sunday off, worked for about two hours in full pads in what was the 13th practice of training camp. It was a pleasant 68 degrees to start the workout, and there was a healthy crowd on hand.

Tight end and receiver autograph sessions following practice may have had something to do with the strong attendance.

Head coach Andy Reid is pleased with how the team is progressing with the first preseason game coming up this Sunday.

"I like the way they're challenging themselves," Reid said of the players. "That's a part you never know, coming in, how it's going to be. You see it and hear it. They're getting after each other and doing it the right way. It's competitive out here and that's a good thing."

Corner L’Jarius Sneed (knee), receiver Kadarius Toney (knee) and tight end Jody Forston (shoulder) are still sidelined. Reid notes that Sneed is "progressing," but it still dealing with swelling in his knee.

Receiver Cornell Powell didn’t practice Monday, but he wasn't included in the injury report.

Defensive end Mike Danna was back to work after missing time with a calf injury. As for Chris Jones, Coach Reid said he doesn’t know when he’ll report.

"I don't know when he'll be here, but any work he can get will help him. It's a pretty fast game."

Skyy Moore had himself a strong day Monday with several great catches, including this one.

Defensive tackle Turk Wharton got his first real work on the field Monday, lining up with the first-team defense during 9-on-7 and also getting limited reps during 11-on-11.

Wharton was just activated from the PUP list this past Wednesday.

Tight end Matt Bushman has been getting an increased number of reps with the first-team offense and consistently making the most of it. He had several more grabs on Monday.

Trent McDuffie had a highlight moment for the defense when he picked off a pass intended for Moore during one-on-one drills.

Running back Isiah Pacheco has become a fan favorite after an electric rookie season in 2022. He since had offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum and a broken hand.

Pacheco has been at training camp every day working, but doing so in a yellow, no-contact jersey. He’s able to partake in 9-on-7 and 7-on-7 drills, but not yet the full-team, full-contact periods.

Pacheco says he’s ready for full contact when given the go-ahead.

"Whenever they allow me to go, I'm ready to go," he said. "I'm just going to keep working and finding those ways to get better. Finding the little things to get better at. I have high standards, and I'm unsatisfied."

Andy Reid has been pleased with what he’s seen from Pacheco this camp.

"Telling (Pacheco) to go slow is a hard thing," Reid said. "He's got to have patience and he doesn't have a lot of it. He's doing great. We'll just have to see, as it goes on here, with the contact part here. But, he's getting good work in without that."

Pacheco rushed for 1,027 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Special teams drills may not always be the most thought of or talked about part of training camp, but Chiefs' special teams' coach Dave Toub expects the very best out of his unit.

Punter Tommy Townsend, entering his fourth season in Kansas City, says Toub demands perfection from the specialists and that makes the season a bit easier.

"That's one thing (Toub) takes pride in is making practice harder than the game," Townsend said. "I think he does a really good job of that. I do get a little nervous out here, especially the first few practices back. It's really nervy and getting everything going and just the speed of it and how he has our practices set up. It really gets you prepped and ready for the season."

Townsend dealt with a sprained ankle during camp last week and was limited for a day or two, but he has been back on the field working. Townsend described the ankle as "day-to-day" and says things are "progressing nicely" in the training room.

Coming off of a first-team All-Pro season in 2022, Townsend says this camp is all about building on the things he does well.

"Just trying to hold onto the ball as long as I can and really pull my leg straight through," Townsend said. "Trying to work on a bunch of different kicks. Trying to be a wizard with the football. Trying to be Harry Potter with the football."

Townsend finished the 2022 season with 53 punts for 2,672 net yards for a 50.42 average.

Numbers like that? You're a wizard, Tommy.

Last year's rookies, this year's veterans

The Chiefs entered the preseason in 2022 with a lot of young, capable rookies eager to prove themselves.

Not only that, but there were a lot of new players on the scene in general. Like Justin Reid, Marques Valdez-Scantling and so on.

Corner Trent McDuffie was one of the 10 new rookies last year. Now getting ready for this season, McDuffie says there’s a lot more familiarity compared to this time a year ago.

"Coming into training camp, it's felt like nothing has gone missing," McDuffie said. "Everybody has been building and building. I feel like last year we were on a different level. We were a little bit farther down, still trying to learn and work it out. This year, everyone has come in confident and excited and ready to play."

Kansas City plays its first preseason game this Sunday at New Orleans. Kickoff is set for noon. The game will be broadcast on both Q Country 92.7 FM and KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph with pregame coverage starting at 11 a.m.

The Chiefs are back to work on Tuesday morning at 9:15. After Tuesday, there are just five training camp practices remaining.

🏀 MBB: Shockers improve to 2-0 in Greece exhibition games

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico&nbsp;– Redshirt junior guard Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 23 points as the Kansas men’s basketball team lost to the Bahamian National Team, 87-81, Monday afternoon in an exhibition game at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum.

A crowd of 3,422 saw Kansas pull within one at 81-80 on a Harris putback with 2:30 remaining in the game. The Bahamian Team then scored five-straight points that included a three point field goal with just under a minute remaining to keep a cushion. The loss ended a 35-game exhibition winning streak for Kansas dating back to 2012. KU is now 94-10 all-time in exhibition play.

Harris shot 10-for-14 from the field, including three three pointers, along with a game-high five steals. Graduate guard Kevin McCullar Jr. had 19 points and a team-high seven assists, while senior center Hunter Dickinson just missed a double-double with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Graduate Nicolas Timberlake scored 13 points for KU that included three threes.

The Bahamian National Team is made of professional and college players as it is prepping for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup. Included are current NBA standouts Buddy Hield and Eric Gordon. Hield led his team with 19 points, while Gordon scored 12.

With the score 8-6, Harris drained a three from the left side and had a steal and lay-in on the next possession. Harris ended the quarter with seven points. It was a quarter of runs as KU led 17-9 before the Bahamian team scored six-straight points. KU responded with seven straight that included a McCullar dunk, a three by Timberlake and a pair of Elmarko Jackson free throws. Jackson ended the contest with seven points and five assists. KU led 24-17 after the first quarter.

The Bahamian National Team came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring KU 16-4 to take its first lead of the game at 30-29 with 5:30 to go in the half. Harris would score Kansas’ final seven points of the half that included two fast break lay-ins and his second three pointer of the contest. The Bahamian team led 46-40 at the half.

Kansas opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run and tied the game at 54-54 on a Dickinson baseline jumper. The remainder of the game had two ties and five lead changes as neither team led by more than six.

Next up for Kansas basketball is the 39th annual Late Night in the Phog on Friday, Oct. 6. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Brandon Schneider announced today the signing of three student-athletes who will join Kansas women’s basketball for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

The newest Jayhawks include a pair of Kansas natives returning to their home state, and one incoming freshman. Graduate transfer Ryan Cobbins is a guard/forward from Kansas City, Kansas, and comes to KU from Alabama after playing the first three seasons of her career at North Dakota State. Skyler Gill is a guard/forward from Wichita, Kansas, who joins the Jayhawks after two seasons at North Alabama, and Paris Gaines is a freshman center from Orlando, Florida, who will start her career in Lawrence.

The Lyons community now has a regulation full-court outdoor basketball court. The City of Lyons, USD 405, and the Lyons Recreation Commission collaborated on the project to build the court, which is located in the middle of Tobias Park, adjacent to the city swimming pool.

Thanks to the City of Lyons and the generosity of multiple individuals and businesses who donated funds, expertise, and labor, and to the South Central Community Foundation for a $1,000 grant, Lyons children and adults will be able to enjoy the court for years to come.

Former LHS boys’ basketball coach and LHS alum Brian Friess was instrumental in raising funds for the project and has been excited to see the idea become a reality. Coach Friess said, “This court will be great for the town of Lyons. We appreciate the monetary donations from LHS alums and local businesses, along with the labor supplied by so many local people.”

Former LHS girls’ basketball coach BJ Smith added, “I am grateful for the community’s support, giving our kids a chance to play basketball!”

City of Lyons Parks Superintendent Matt Detmer was also happy to see the project completed. He worked with the City of Lyons for approval of the majority of the funding and credits the City Council and Mayor for their support.

The National Baseball Congress World Series, powered by Evergy, kicksed off at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium on Thursday, August 3rd&nbsp;for the 89th&nbsp;NBC World Series. Welcoming 16 teams from across the country for the 89th&nbsp;playing, the NBC World Series has been held in Wichita every year since 1935.

2023 NBC World Series Pool Play continues on Monday, August 7th and Tuesday, August 8th.

DeChambeau gets first LIV Golf win in style with a 58 at Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau has his first LIV Golf victory and his name in the record book. He shot a 58 on a rain-softened White Course at Greenbrier to win LIV Golf-Greenbrier by six shots. DeChambeau is the fourth player on a top-level tour to shoot 58. Jim Furyk had a 58 at the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour in 2016, while Ryo Ishikawa and S.H. Kim had a 58 in different events on the Japan Golf Tour. DeChambeau's round was so amazing that he shot 58 with a bogey. He had 13 birdies. Mito Pereira finished second.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Lucas Glover has won the Wyndham Championship for his first PGA Tour title in more than two years. And it couldn't have come at a better time. The two-shot victory moves Glover to No. 49 in the FedEx Cup and gets him into the lucrative postseason. He got help from Russell Henley who bogeyed his last three holes. The final round was delayed two hours by storms. For Justin Thomas, his season is over. His birdie chip on the 18th hit the base of the pin. Thomas missed by one spot going to the FedEx Cup playoffs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —&nbsp; Bryson Stott, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals 8-4 on Sunday.

Bryce Harper had two hits and drove in a run for the defending champion Phillies, who have won five of seven. Philadelphia began play in second in the NL wild-card standings.

“I felt like we did a really good job this whole series responding,” Schwarber said.

Taijuan Walker (13-4) recovered from a shaky first inning to become the first major league pitcher to reach 13 victories.

“He just competes even if he doesn't have his good stuff,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

The Phillies went ahead for good on Schwarber’s 28th homer in the second, a 421-foot drive to center off Zack Greinke (1-12) that made it 5-4. The two-run shot stopped an 0-for-19 skid.

“I always have confidence in him,” Thomson said.

Castellanos tacked on a two-run shot to left in the fifth, and Harper hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Kansas City tagged Walker for three runs on five hits in the first, but the Phillies evened the score in the bottom half on Stott’s opposite-field drive to left with two down.

“That changed the momentum,” Thomson said.

After Melendez made it 4-3 in the second with a solo shot, Walker settled down and allowed just one more hit. The 30-year-old right-hander finished seven innings of seven-hit ball.

Walker is trying to figure out why his velocity has started slow in the last two outings, but his mentality remains the same.

“My job is to go out there and give the team the best chance to win,” he said.

The struggles continued for Greinke, a six-time All-Star. He left after surrendering five runs and seven hits in four innings.

Royals second baseman Michael Massey and shortstop Maikel Garcia combined on a sensational putout of Stott in the third inning. Massey snared Stott’s hard-hit grounder while diving to his right, flipped the ball out of his glove to Garcia, who fired to first base to just get the speedy Stott.

“Incredible,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Stott responded with his own stellar defensive play two innings later, robbing Matt Beaty of an RBI hit with a diving grab.

Center fielder Kyle Isbel took extra bases away from Harper in the seventh with a leaping grab of his drive to the wall in center. The Phillies did score on the sacrifice fly.

Harper extended his on-base streak to 14 consecutive games with a first-inning double.

Garcia made it 10 contests in a row with a hit when he singled in the first.

Kansas City has lost 30 of 34 series after dropping two of three to the Phillies. Still, Quatraro was pleased with the direction in which his club is headed. The Royals won seven in a row before Saturday's loss.

“They played well this series,” Quatraro said of his club.

Trea Turner doubled in the first inning and finished 1 for 4. Since the Phillies fans responded to a social media campaign to loudly cheer the slumping slugger beginning on Friday night, Turner is 4 for 12 with a three-run homer, two doubles and five RBI.

Royals: C Salvador Pérez exited with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch from Walker in the second. X-rays after the game were negative, Quatraro said.

Phillies: Placed OF Brandon Marsh on the 10-day injured list with a left knee contusion. Marsh got hurt during Saturday night’s 9-6 victory over Kansas City when he crashed into the center-field wall trying to catch Samad Taylor’s fifth-inning triple. Weston Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Marsh’s spot on the roster.

Royals: Open four-game series at Boston on Monday night. Royals LHP Cole Ragans (3-3, 4.33 ERA) opposes Red Sox RHP Brayan Bello (8-6, 3.79 ERA).

⚾ Stott, Schwarber and Castellanos homer to help Phillies down Royals

WICHITA, KS - The Wind Surge were fueled by a pair of home runs by Yoyner Fajardo and newcomer Dalton Shuffield who rallied to defeat Tulsa. Wichita won the ball game 10-9 and win the series four games to two.

Tulsa wasted no time and put some runs on the board in the top of the first. Yusniel Diaz hit a two RBI single to get the Drillers offense going. Diego Cartaya then hit a two-run home run that landed in the Wind Surge bull pen. The Drillers now had a four-run lead.

The Wind Surge scored in the bottom of the first inning when Yoyner Fajardo stepped to the plate and crushed a lead-off solo home run over the right field wall that flew 419 feet.

The Drillers picked up another run in the top of the second. Jorbit Vivas hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed a runner to score from third.

The Surge took the lead from Tulsa in the bottom of the second. It started with a stand-up bases clearing three RBI triple from Will Holland to bring the Surge within one run. Fajardo then got his second RBI of the game when he hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Holland to tie the game. Tanner Schobel then hit an RBI double to put the Surge in the lead.

The lead swung back to the Drillers in the top of the third when Carson Taylor hit a three-run run home run over the right field wall.

The Drillers added to their lead in the top of the fifth. Hamlet Marte hit an RBI single on a line drive to center field.

In the bottom of the seventh Shuffield got a strike to swing at. After being walked the first three at bats, he crushed the ball over the right field wall for a three-run home run that tied the ball game. The home run was his third home run in just two games, and he has a hit in all three games he has played for Wichita.

Aaron Sabato had the tie breaking hit when he ripped a ball down the third base line for an RBI double and the Surge lead.

⚾ Wind Surge come from behind in exciting series finale

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, en route to a 12-1 run-rule win in seven innings over the Seattle Blackfins on Sunday night at Eck Stadium. 

The Monarchs are now 2-0 in pool play in the 89th annual NBC World Series with one game remaining before bracket play.

Max Buettenback, a Nebraska signee, had a night to remember, going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in five runs. Buettenback recorded a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and then a two-run triple in the seventh inning. The five RBI recorded are tied for the most in an NBC World Series single-game in Monarchs history.

Hutchinson (22-17) set a new single-game record in program history with 17 hits recorded as a team.&nbsp;

The Monarchs plated three in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh. The lone Blackfins run came in the bottom of the first.

The nine Monarchs in the batting order recorded at least one hit, including six of the nine recording a multi-hit game.

Cooper Harris (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Sam Wiese (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Will Edmunson (3-for-5, RBI), Jaden Gustafson (3-for-5, RBI) and Drew Bugner (2-for-4) all had at least two hits in the victory. The Monarchs had seven extra base hits out of their 17 total.

Brady Pacha got the start and earned the win on the mound, going six innings, striking out eight and walking just one. Noah Kelley worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief.&nbsp;

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Lina Hurtig's converted her penalty and Sweden knocked the United States out of the World Cup 5-4 on penalties after a scoreless draw at the Women's World Cup.

U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher fruitlessly argued she had saved Hurtig's attempt, but it was ruled over the line. The stadium played Abba's "Dancing Queen" in the stadium as the Swedes celebrated.

The United States, which has a record four World Cup titles overall and was trying to win an unprecedented third consecutive title, was eliminated in the Round of 16 for the first time in team history.

Previously, the Americans' worst finish had been third place, three different times.

“I am proud of the women on the field," said U.S. coach Vlatko Andonovski. “I know we were criticized for the way we played, and for different moments in the group stage. I think we came out today and showed the grit, the resilience, the fight. The bravery showed we did everything we could to win the game. And, unfortunately, soccer can be cruel sometimes.”

It was the first match at this World Cup to go to extra time.

Two-time World Cup participant Julie Ertz was in tears after the match.

“We didn't put anything in the back of the net,” she sobbed. “The penalties was tough as well. It's just emotional because it's probably my last game ever. It's just tough. It's an emotional time. It obviously sucks. Penalties are the worst.”

The addition of Sonnett allowed Horan to move up higher in the midfield.Sweden pressed in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Sofia Jakobsson, who came in as a substitute in the 81st minute, nearly scored in the 85th but Naeher managed to catch it for her first save of the tournament.Neither Caroline Seger or Megan Rapinoe started the match, but Rapinoe came in as a sub for Alex Morgan in the first overtime period.Seger, whose 235 appearances for Sweden are the most for any woman in Europe, was on the bench to start the match.
