WICHITA, Kan. - The Wind Surge jumped out to an early lead off a pair of solo home runs. The RockHounds threatened to significantly reduce the Wind Surge playoff chances in the top of the fifth when they took the lead after piling on four runs. The Surge rallied and took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth off a couple of clutch hits from Jake Rucker and Will Holland. Wichita was able to protect the one-run lead from the RockHounds for the remainder of the game and defeated Midland by a score of 5-4. The Midland RockHounds now lead the series two games to one.

The Wind Surge took an early lead off a pair of solo home runs. David Banuelos hit his tenth home run of the season 361 feet on a fly ball over the left field wall in the bottom of the second. Alerick Soularie then hit a 384-foot home run in the bottom of the third on a line drive that landed in the visitor’s bullpen.

The RockHounds bats came to life with six hits and four runs scored in the top of the fifth. Euribiel Angeles hit a line drive to left field for an RBI single, and William Simoneit hit a three-run home run.

The Wind Surge loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning off two walks and a hit by pitch. Jake Rucker took advantage of this opportunity and belted a line drive to center field for a two RBI single. Will Holland then gave the Surge the lead back off an RBI single.

Travis Adams made his team leading 24th start on the mound for the Wind Surge. He pitched four and one third innings where he gave up four runs off seven hits. He struck out five batters and walked none.

Midland starting pitcher Brady Basso pitched one and one third innings. He gave up one run off three hits. He struck out three batters and walked none.

The Wichita Wind Surge improved to (35-31, 63-71) and the Midland RockHounds fell to (36-30, 68-67).

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers says on Instagram he had surgery to repair his torn left Achilles tendon on Wednesday. Rodgers' post Thursday night includes a picture of him smiling in a blue medical cap and gown in a hospital bed with his left foot clearly bruised. Rodgers said the surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles who has worked with numerous professional athletes during his career. GREELEY, Colo. --&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/emerson-wilford/7495">Emerson Wilford</a>&nbsp;tied a career high with 13 kills, one of six Shockers with four or more terminations, as Wichita State rolled to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 straight sets win on Thursday afternoon at Bank of Colorado Arena in the opening match of the Northern Colorado Classic.

It's the 29th consecutive victory for Wichita State over Bradley, 24 of which have been sweeps.

The Shockers (4-4) hit .380 as a team and got better as the match wore on, improving the hitting percentage from .308 in the first set to .400 in the second and .452 in the third.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/sophia-rohling/7490">Sophia Rohling</a>&nbsp;made her presence felt in the early going with five first-set kills, then added three in the second and four more in the third to finish with 12 at a .479 clip. Setter&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/izzi-strand/7498">Izzi Strand</a>&nbsp;dished out 34 assists in three sets while also leading the Shockers defensively with 11 digs.

Wichita State seized a quick 9-4 lead in the first set, but Bradley (7-4) clawed back to a 10-10 tie and later took a 20-18 lead after a 5-0 run. A native of Midland, Texas, Clinton posted a match-high 11 kills and hit .304 followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/aliyah-carter/11044">Aliyah Carter</a>&nbsp;with eight kills.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field. Kickoff on Sunday. Sept. 17 is slated for 12 p.m. CT. KC enters the contest looking for its first win after falling 21-20 to the Detroit Lions in Week 1. The Chiefs hold an 8-6 all-time record against the Jaguars and have won six straight games against the club.

The Chiefs are on their quest for an eighth straight AFC West title.Over the last four seasons the Chiefs have played in three Super Bowls (LIV, LV and LVII). Kansas City has hosted a record five-straight AFC Championship Games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. In 2022. the Chiefs finished with a 14-3 record and the number one seed in the AFC. KC has clinched seven-consecutive AFC West titles, tying for the second-longest streak in NFL history (NE - 11, 2009-19). Since 2015, Kansas City has tallied a 42-6 record (.875) against AFC West opponents, the NFL's best divisional record over an eight-year span since divisional realignment in 2002. Under Head Coach Andy Reid. KC has qualified for the postseason nine times in 10 seasons and has nine 10+ win seasons. Reid owns 269 career victories (regular and postseason combined). He ranks fifth on the NFL's all-time wins list. He has tallied 117 regular season wins in Kansas City.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is in his sixth season as the club's starting quarterback. As the starter, Mahomes has led the team to five-consecutive home AFC Championship Games, three Super Bowl appearances and earned NFL MVP (2018, 2022) and Super Bow MVP honors (2019, 2022). Since 2018, he leads the league in yards (24,183), touchdowns (184). 254 yard completions (209) and first down throws (1,193). With onty 49 interceptions (since 2018), he owns a +145 TDAINT ratio, the highest mark of any active QB in that span. He owns 41 career games of 300% passing yards. TE Travis Keice has recorded an NFL record sever-straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons (1,338 yards in 2022). He owns 35 games with 100+ receiving yards (most in NFL history for a tight end) and has caught at least one pass in 161 consecutive games (reg. and postseason). Since entering the NFL in 2013, Kelce leads all tight ends in receiving yards (10,344) and receptions (814). He ranks first in touchdowns (69) and catches of 25+ yards (81). Defensively, DT Chris Jones recorded 15.5 sacks last sesson and CB L'Jarius Sneed recorded a team-high three INTs.

The 2023 Chiefs feature several new faces including two new tacides, Jawaan Taylor (RT) and Donovan Smith (LT). The club drafted DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the first round (31 overall) and WR Rashee Rice in the second round (55 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft held in Kansas City. WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita jumped out to an early lead but they could not build on the early momentum and only scored the one run all game. The Midland RockHounds came from behind late and defeated the Wind Surge by the score of 2-1. Midland leads the series after taking the first two games.

The Wind Surge took an early one run lead in the bottom of the second. Ben Ross came to the plate with a runner on third and two outs. The count was full when he hit a soft ground ball straight up the middle and hustled to first for a clutch RBI single.

Midland tied the ballgame up after going scoreless in their first six innings. Brayan Buelvas hit a solo home run for the RockHounds on a fly ball to left center field.

Midland took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. William Simoneit hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to center field. A run was able to reach home and the RockHounds had a one run lead.

Pierson Ohl made his 14th start on the mound for the Wind Surge this season. He pitched five and one third scoreless innings where he only gave up three hits. He struck out five batters and walked one. Sean Mooney was credited with the loss in his first decision of the year and his record falls to (0-1).

The Corpus Christi Hooks starting pitcher Jack Perkins pitched six innings. He gave up one run off four hits. Perkins struck out six batters and walked two. Jasseel De La Cruz earned the win.

CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Massey homered for the second straight game, Salvador Perez had three hits and two RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Wednesday night. Four pitchers combined to limit Chicago to one run on five hits while striking out nine. Kansas City won its second straight against Chicago and took the season series 7-6. Rookie Steven Cruz opened with two scoreless, two-hit innings. Fellow rookie Alec Marsh (1-8) followed, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league victory. James McArthur got five outs, and Tucker Davidson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. Mike Clevinger (7-8) was the loser.

Four pitchers combined to limit Chicago to one run on five hits while striking out nine. Kansas City won its second straight against Chicago and took the season series 7-6.

Rookie Steven Cruz opened with two scoreless, two-hit innings in his first career start. Fellow rookie Alec Marsh (1-8) followed, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league victory.

“That was probably the best we've seen with him as far as his execution of pitches, the quality the shape of the pitched, the competitiveness,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said.

James McArthur got five outs, and Tucker Davidson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win for Marsh, who pitched in his 14th game. The 25-year-old righty started eight of them since being recalled from Omaha and making his debut June 30.

“To see the things I've been working on, to see it come together was amazing” said Marsh, who added teammates “didn't let up on him” in a postgame celebration.

Massey has six homers and 17 RBIs in 19 career games against the White Sox, a team he rooted for while growing up in the Chicago suburb of Palos Park, Illinois. The 25-year-old infielder has 13 homers this year, his second in the majors, and 17 total so far in his career.

As usual, Massey had group of family and friends cheering him on during the series on the South Side.

“I've gone back and forth, like, `If I'm doing it against these guys, what have I got to change against other teams?'" Massey said. “Again, I think it always comes down to just my family's here and being comfortable with them the whole week.”

Chicago starter Mike Clevinger (7-8) allowed two runs — on Massey’s drive in the second — and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and didn't give up a walk.

“Six innings, two runs, made one mistake,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Paid for it with Massey, but overall this is another good start for him.”

Nick Loftin drove in two runs, with a single and double, after entering as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Loftin, Perez and Bobby Witt, Jr. had RBIs in the seventh for the Royals, whose 46—101 record is the worst in the majors. The White Sox have the fourth-worst mark at 56-90. Both teams have been eliminated from the postseason.

Massey hit Clevinger’s 1-0 fastball into the right-field bullpen in the second to put Kansas City ahead 2-0.

Loftin and Perez each had an RBI single in the seventh as Kansas City scored three-runs off relievers Aaron Bummer and Lane Ramsey to take a 5-0 lead. Witt drove in a run with a sac fly.

Through the first six innings, Chicago advanced only two runners as far as second base.

The White Sox broke through in the seventh. Yoán Moncada led off with a double, then advanced to third on Andrew Vaughn's infield hit and scored when Witt threw wildly on Yasmani Grandal's grounder to shortstop.

Loftin and Perez drove in runs in the ninth.

The Milwaukee native struck out Gavin Sheets to cap a 13-pitch at bat for the first out of the seventh before McArthur took over and got Elvis Andrus to ground into a double-play.

“I think it was the longest at-bat of my career," Marsh said. “It was a battle the whole time.”

Royals: Had not yet named a starter to face Houston RHP Cristian Javier (9-3, 4.78) at Kansas City on Friday.

White Sox: Will send RHP José Ureña (0-5, 8.46) to face Minnesota RHP Kenta Maeda (4-7, 4.65) in Chicago on Thursday to open a four-game series.

The union's executive director Lloyd Howell says it's the easiest decision the NFL can make. Players consider it a matter of career preservation. The union's repeated request for all grass comes less than 48 hours after four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon in his debut with the New York Jets. A new artificial surface was installed this year at MetLife Stadium. Carolina linebacker Shaq Thompson has been fighting for grass the past two years. He says he hopes to see everyone to take a stand.

Jets' Aaron Rodgers says he 'will rise yet again' in first comments since season-ending injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers' season is over. It appears he might not be ready to call it a career. The New York Jets quarterback wrote on Instagram on Wednesday night that "I shall rise yet again." That came after coach Robert Saleh said he'd be shocked if Rodgers ends his playing career this way, but he hasn't had any conversations along those lines with him. The 39-year-old quarterback tore his left Achilles tendon on his fourth snap in his debut with the Jets on Monday night in a 22-16 overtime win over Buffalo. Saleh said Rodgers is currently going for some medical consultations to determine his next step, which will include surgery.

Rangers RHP Scherzer to miss rest of regular season because of strained muscle in shoulder

TORONTO (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer will miss the rest of the regular season because of a strained muscle in his shoulder. Rangers general manager Chris Young says it's also unlikely that Scherzer would be able to pitch in the postseason if Texas qualifies for the first time since 2016. An MRI on Wednesday revealed a low-grade strain of the teres major muscle. The 39-year-old Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star, left Tuesday's game at Toronto in the sixth inning of a win. He finishes the season 13-6 in 27 starts for the New York Mets and Rangers.

Chiefs' Chris Jones: 'I would change it' if given another chance to avoid a holdout

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said Wednesday that he would have changed his approach to his holdout if given another chance. But the All-Pro pass rusher also said he was happy with how things worked out. He was at practice for the first time since agreeing to a reworked one-year deal Monday that includes incentives that could push his salary over the $19.5 base that he was scheduled to make. Senator subpoenas Saudis for documents on LIV-PGA Tour golf deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of a Senate investigations subcommittee is subpoenaing Saudi officials for documents on the kingdom's new golf partnership with the PGA Tour. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, said Wednesday that Saudi Arabia had to be more transparent about what he said was its $35 billion in investments in the U.S. The move is the latest to challenge Saudi Arabia's assertion that as a foreign government it enjoys sovereign immunity from some U.S. courts and institutions. That includes when it comes to disclosing information related to its golf investments. The Saudi Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference and the rest of the power conferences are relying on off-site help for stadium officials when dealing with football replay reviews. The use of collaborative replay has gone from experimental several years ago to essential at the top levels of college football. It has officials in a centralized location consult with stadium officials in making the review. The ACC recently opened its expanded operations at its new headquarters in Charlotte. League supervisor of football officials Alberto Riveron says officials are using technology to make sure officials catch any "egregious mistake" with an incorrect call.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles host Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings in their home opener in prime time for the second straight season. The Eagles and Vikings kick off Week 2 on Thursday night at rowdy Lincoln Financial Field. The defending NFC champions were rusty and lucky to pull off a 25-20 win last week at New England. Netflix's 'Full Swing' won't be getting full access to the Ryder Cup team rooms

The Netflix golf documentary series "Full Swing" won't have full access at the Ryder Cup. U.S. captain Zach Johnson says he spoke to his team when concerns were raised about a film crew in the team room. He says they agreed to keep certain areas off limits. Netflix is in production for its second season of the popular series. The Ryder Cup figured to be a big part of 2023. PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh says Netflix will still be at Marco Simone. He says decisions about access to the team room are typically left up to the captain and the team.

NBA takes steps to try to ensure its star players appear in more games

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has taken steps to try to ensure that its star players appear in more games, particularly nationally televised matchups and the in-season tournament that is being added this year. The league's board of governors has approved a new player participation policy that will take effect for this upcoming season, replacing the player resting policy that was implemented prior to the 2017-18 season. The new rules focus primarily on star players — someone who has been an All-Star or on the All-NBA team in any of the prior three seasons. Teams will have to manage their rosters to ensure that multiple available star players aren't sitting out the same game to rest.

For as long as Heath Gerstner and Rick Sabath have been around high school baseball in Kansas, as players and coaches, the topic has been a source of contention.

“Why can’t Kansas play more games?”

Since 1965, high school baseball and softball teams in Kansas have been limited to a maximum of 20 regular-season games. In the nearly 60 years since, efforts to extend the season were shot down, most recently last April when Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors voted 33-32 to maintain the status quo.

“I think there’s a lot of challenges any time there’s change,” said Gerstner, who not only is the head baseball coach at McPherson but also has been the president of the KABC for the past four years. “To see the good at the end is sometimes difficult and there’s so many points of view out there with big schools and small schools, baseball programs with 60 kids involved and programs with 11 kids involved. To find a way to allow all of those programs the opportunity to play in more games was important.”

Dejected, but undeterred by past rejections, the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches didn’t go back to the drawing board. Instead, it took some feedback from the board and joined forces with the state’s softball coaches to try and elicit change.

On Wednesday, change finally occurred. At the KSHSAA’s first Board of Directors meeting of the 2023-24 school year, the proposal to increase the maximum number of baseball and softball games allowed during the regular season again was up for vote.

And this time, it had more than enough momentum and support to pass.

With a 42-17 vote in baseball and 48-11 vote in softball, high school teams may now play up to 26 regular season games. The change is effective immediately.

“I think we finally did what’s best for kids,” Gerstner said. “Our players deserve more games and we’re excited.”Sabath, who began coaching in the college ranks at various stops in Kansas before taking over at Olathe West when the school opened, said the process has been a long time coming. And one many involved with the KABC weren’t sure would ever come.

“This has been a passion of ours for a long time,” said Sabath, who takes over at St. Thomas Aquinas this spring as head coach. “We were told it would never happen. To see it happen today is so fulfilling for all of us and all the guys in the past who tried to get this done.”

The proposal to increase the maximum number of games was put forth by the Sunflower League and Olathe West athletic director Pat Butler made a brief presentation on behalf of the league. In his presentation, Butler made a simple rationale.

“Kansas lags behind, really the rest of the country, but specifically the states that surround us,” Butler said.

The numbers back up that claim. Nebraska allows its high school baseball and softball teams to play more than 30 games. Missouri allows 26. Oklahoma 37. Iowa 40.In addition, he presented numbers on the percentage of games played at the high school level compared with the college level. Where basketball plays roughly 67% of a collegiate schedule, soccer plays around 80% and volleyball is over 90%, baseball and softball have a schedule that is closer to 40% of the collegiate slate.

“It’s not really just about the volume of games,” Butler said. “But the opportunities those games can provide our kids and programs – to maybe play in tournaments, leave their league and move around the state and play a bit, all unique things we want to provide our kids.”

Gerstner said the KABC has been working on extending the season for quite some time now, and when the 2020 season was canceled for COVID concerns it drove home that desire even more. The proposal had the backing of 90% of the state’s baseball coaches.

Butler and Sunflower League colleagues Todd Dain, principal at Shawnee Mission South, and Jay Novacek, principal at Olathe West – who officially put the proposal to the vote -- also expressed concerns about the lure of club sports of elite athletes in both baseball and softball, particularly in the metro area.

“I would argue that high school sports, particularly baseball and softball, are under attack at times from club sports,” Butler said. “We need to continue to provide new opportunities, more opportunities for our athletes. We want to protect our high school programs and this is the opportunity to do that.”

“We want to promote our sports because we believe that’s where it’s at,” Novacek said. “It teaches life lessons and builds life-long relationships. We would hate to lose those.”

Discussion on the floor after both Butler and Gerstner spoke in favor of the proposal raised questions about the number of games involving the loss of instructional time being raised from 13 to 20 games. Paola principal Jeff Hines also presented a counter-argument about the impact of an increase in baseball and softball games on other sports and activities.

“I both appreciate and admire the passion that the baseball coaches have expressed in support of this,” Hines said. “However, we need to promote the belief system as school administrators and members of the board of directors that all activities that we offer at our member schools are important. We have a duty to make sure that one sport or activity doesn’t take precedence.”

Hines cited the addition of preseason jamborees for baseball and softball this season as well as the addition of a preseason arm-care conditioning throwing program for baseball pitchers as new amenities already afforded the sport. He also raised concerns about conflicts for dual-sport or dual-activity student-athletes during a spring schedule loaded with various state competitions such as forensics and music.

“For us to figure out how to make all those things interact and not make baseball more important or less important is difficult,” Hines said.

Horton principal Larry Mills also levied concerns from smaller schools that already battle low numbers, and in particular, pitchers currently that would be taxed even more by an increased schedule.

Gerstner said he understood such concerns.

“We’re allowing 26 games, not making it mandatory,” he said. “We’re neighboring schools with Little River and they may not think that 26 games fits their personnel, where it does us.”

After the pro/con discussion, the vote was held and it was overwhelmingly in support of increasing the maximum to 26 games for both baseball and softball.

“I’m super-excited with the decision today,” Gerstner said. “I think it all came down to the aspect that you’re not required to play the 26. You look at the postseasons now and you’ve got teams going into regionals with 17 games even though it says play 20. Games get pushed back, rainouts happen, it’s difficult. Now with 26, if you get rained out, you still get 23, 24 games.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

KSHSAA Board of Directors approves increase in games for baseball, softball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Given another chance, Chris Jones acknowledged Wednesday that he would have changed the way he approached his holdout with the Kansas City Chiefs, which the All-Pro defensive tackle carried through the offseason, training camp and preseason right through their season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions.

Exactly how would he change it? Jones didn't really say.

"When you have a lot of new guys, it's kind of tough to be away, especially in the defensive line room," said Jones, who was back at practice two days after agreeing to a reworked one-year deal that could amount to a raise if certain incentives are hit.

"These are the decisions you have to live with," he continued. "I would change it, but I'm grateful for how it turned out."

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he expects Jones to be on the field in some capacity Sunday in Jacksonville.

"He's an important part of it and you know, I'm glad he's back. We'll just see where he's at physically as we go," Reid said. "He normally keeps himself in pretty good shape. We'll see how he does out there."

Jones spent the Chiefs' opener against Detroit last Thursday watching from a suite — his suite.

It wasn't exactly a view he enjoyed, either, as Kansas City stumbled to a 21-20 loss. Jones was powerless to help his teammates after they celebrated their latest Super Bowl triumph with a pregame banner-raising ceremony, and he mostly spent the game "biting my nails" and feeling like the other 80,000-some fans jammed into Arrowhead Stadium.

"It all felt crazy," Jones said. "First time I ever sat in my suite. I see what I pay so much money for. Food was amazing. But it was a different viewpoint. I could see from a fan's viewpoint how stressful it is."

It's been a stressful offseason for the Chiefs, who have been trying to reach an agreement with Jones on a long-term deal; he is finishing a four-year, $80 million pact.

But the sides were never close, and as negotiations dragged on, Jones racked up millions in fines for missing mandatory minicamp, training camp and the preseason. He also forfeited his Week 1 game check.

Jones said his reworked contract allows him to recoup the fines, but did not discuss the details of it. He also said that he would not continue negotiations during the season but was open to revisiting them once it is complete.

"I don't want to go back and forth during the season," Jones said. "My focus right now is being the best me I can be for this team; being the best player on this defense, the best player in the league. Anything less than that is a disappointment to myself."

Jones also said he wasn't necessarily trying to become the league's highest-paid defensive tackle. That honor that currently belongs to the Rams' Aaron Donald, who is playing on a three-year, $96 million contract.

"Not at all," he said. "Is it important to be the best at my position? Absolutely."

There's an argument to be made that Jones was exactly that last season. He had 15 1/2 sacks to match the best season of his career, picked up his first postseason sacks and won his second Super Bowl ring in the past four years.

His ability to produce pressure from the interior of the line is unique, and it was sorely missing in the Chiefs' loss to the Lions. They were already playing without defensive end Charles Omenihu, who is serving a six-game suspension handed down by the NFL, and wound up sacking Detroit's Jared Goff just once.

Goes without saying that the group up front will need to do better against Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on Sunday.

Just how much Jones will play in Jacksonville remains to be seen, but he was welcomed back Wednesday by a Kansas City locker room that consistently said throughout the offseason that it would stay out of his business.

"Happy to have him. Chris is not only a great player but a great person in the locker room," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "Always has a smile on his face. Like I said early in training camp, whenever he gets back here, we're going to welcome him with open arms, and now we're going to try to get out there and get a win."

NOTES: TE Travis Kelce was back at practice after hyperextending his knee last week. He missed the game against Detroit but Reid was optimistic he will be available in Jacksonville. "It's like Chris. They're good football players. We welcome them back in and we go," Reid said, "but on the other hand, I expect the other guys to step up and do the job."
