KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Johan Oviedo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in 53 major league starts, Ke’Bryan Hayes had four hits and Zack Greinke lost his ninth consecutive decision in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-0 win and the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Oviedo (8-13) struck out five and walked two while throwing a career-high 112 pitches.

“He was on point the entire game," Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. "When he got behind he was able to execute..”

It was just the 28th complete game in the major leagues this season and the first complete game in 150 professional starts for the 26-year-old right-hander dating to 2016. Oviedo had never before gotten an out in the eighth inning, must less pitch the ninth.

“I was trying not to think about anything,” Oviedo said. “I was very excited. I tried to just check my mind and make good pitches.”

Catcher Endy Rodríguez lobbied Shelton and pitching coach Oscar Martin to allow Oviedo to finish.

“Going into the ninth, I didn't plan on pitching him, because he was at 97,” Shelton said of the pitch count. “I figured that was good. Endy Rodríguez made a pretty strong push. He kept saying, ‘Let’s go, he's fine.' ... I figured: young catcher feeling it. We were hitter by hitter, but it was good for Endy and good for Ovi.”

Pittsburgh won at Kansas City for the first time since Aug. 20, 2015.

Kansas City (41-92) didn't advance a runner past first base. The Royals were blanked for the 14th time this season and held to two hits or fewer for the eighth time.

“We didn't put too many good swings on him,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said.

Greinke (1-13) gave up two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, dropping to 0-9 in 17 starts since beating Baltimore on May 3. The 39-year-old right-hander is tied with Oviedo, Kyle Freeland and Rich Hill for second in the majors in losses, trailing only teammate Jordan Lyles at 15. Grienke had only one 1-2-3 inning.

“He was a little bit off with his command,” Quatraro said. “It's amazing how he can compete and get out of trouble. There's a reason he's been doing this for as long as he has.”

Hayes singled in the first, hit an RBI double in the third for a 2-0 lead, singled in the fifth to chase Greinke and singled in the seventh against Taylor Hearn. Hayes is hitting .438 (21 for 48) since Aug. 9 with four doubles, four home runs and eight RBIs.

“I've been putting good at-bats together and hitting the ball hard,” Hayes said. “We were able to find some holes. It feels good whenever you can find a hole.”

Alfonso Rivas hit a run-scoring double-play grounder in the second first after Rodríguez's leadoff single and walks to Jack Suwinski and Liover Peguero.

Andrew McCutchen and Joshua Palacios had RBI singles in the seventh off Hearn. and Rivas doubled in a run in the eighth against Jackson Kowar.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer is going to miss his next turn Wednesday. Manager Matt Quatraro said Singer has shown signs of arm fatigue but there is nothing physically wrong.

Kansas City LHP Cole Ragans (5-4, 3.66 ERA) starts Tuesday night.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its first Top 15 poll of the regular season on Monday afternoon, and the HutchCC Blue Dragons are ranked No. 1.

The Blue Dragons were No. 2 in the preseason Top 15 poll, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/42c02c55-844a-4212-a3c3-51842071fb90">but after dismantling then-No. 11 Navarro in the season opener, 42-6</a>, HutchCC found itself No. 1.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is one of three Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) teams in the poll. Garden City is No. 5 and Butler is No. 13. Coffeyville and Highland are both receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons will host Ellsworth (Iowa) on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the home opener at Gowans Stadium. The game had originally been scheduled for 2 p.m., but was moved up in the day to avoid the high temperatures. This will be the annual First Responders Day.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcasted on&nbsp;<a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9-FM</a>, the radio home for Blue Dragon athletics. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. with Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 10:30 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas Football will kick off its 132nd season on Friday, September 1 under the lights when the Jayhawks host Missouri State at 7 p.m. CT from David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The game will air on ESPN+ with Chuckie Kempf (Play-by-Play) and Ahman Green (Analyst) on the call.

Friday night’s season opener kicks off a highly anticipated season for the Jayhawks, who enter year three under head coach Lance Leipold. Kansas returns a wealth of experience, returning 17 starters, 398 career starts and the most offensive production in the country from a season ago (91%).

Kansas and Missouri State will meet for the third time in program history, with the previous meetings coming in 2002 (Kansas 44, Missouri State 24) and 2001 (Kansas 24, Missouri State 10). For the third-consecutive season, Kansas will make its season debut on a Friday night, following last year’s 56-10 win over Tennessee Tech and a 17-14 victory over South Dakota in 2021. Prior to 2021, Kansas hadn’t opened the season with a Friday night home game since beating Washburn, 47-0, to open the 1944 season.

The Jayhawks enter the 2023 season after a 6-7 (3-6 Big 12) finish in 2022, resulting in Kansas’ first bowl appearance since 2008. Kansas is led by Preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Jalon Daniels, alongside Preseason All-Big 12 First Team selections in running back Devin Neal, center Mike Novitksy and cornerback Cobee Bryant.

Neal enters the 2023 season as the Big 12’s leading returning rusher from a season ago, rushing for 1,090 yards on 180 attempts and nine touchdowns. Neal became Kansas’ 13th individual to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Kansas’ 29 rushing touchdowns in 2022 were the most by the Jayhawks in a single season since 2007.

Defensively, Kansas returns seven starters, including 81% of its returning production from the 2022 season. The Jayhawks return their top-three tacklers from 2022, including Logan Jr. (106), Miller (94) and Young (60).

Missouri State enters Friday night’s matchup under first year head coach Ryan Beard, who became the program’s youngest head coach in school history. The Bears compiled a 5-6 (3-5 MVFC) record in 2022 and return eight starters from a season ago.

Following Friday’s season opener, Kansas will return home to host Illinois to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 8 at 6:30 p.m.

🏈 KU hosts Missouri State in season opener on Friday

The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors is excited to announce the selection of Weston Moody, Wamego, and Jace Pavlovich, McPherson, as the next head coaches of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. The 51st&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas. The head coaches are selected from the group of assistant coaches in the previous year’s game. This selection is determined by a vote from the previous coaching staff, camp directors, trainers, and managers.

The East team will be led by Wamego High School Head Coach, Weston Moody. Coach Moody is entering his sixth season as the Head Coach at Wamego High School, where he has compiled an overall record of 38-15. Wamego is coming off a 12-1 season that included their first ever state championship game appearance in 2022. Coach Moody was named the 4A Coach of the Year by multiple outlets following his program’s historic 2022 season.

"I am honored to be selected as the Head Coach of the Shrine Bowl East squad,” said East Head Coach Weston Moody. &nbsp;“I'm humbled to be able to play a small part in the efforts of the Shriners, who provide care to youth in need worldwide and highlight the best football players in the state of Kansas.&nbsp; I'm grateful for this opportunity, and it would not be possible without&nbsp;our players, staff, Wamego community and my family."&nbsp;

McPherson High School Head Coach Jace Pavlovich will lead the 2024 Kansas Shrine Bowl West team. Coach Pavlovich is entering his ninth season as the Head Coach at McPherson High School where he has put together a career record of 72-18. Pavlovich enters the 2023 season tied with Tom Young as the program’s all-time wins leader. The Bullpups finished 10-2 during the 2022 season.

"I am honored and privileged&nbsp;to be chosen to lead the West squad this year,” said West Head Coach Jace Pavlovich. “To have the privilege&nbsp;of being a small part of this great event and to help in the noble cause it represents is a dream come true.&nbsp; I am grateful for being chosen, but the credit should rest with the outstanding players, coaches, and administrators at McPherson High School.&nbsp; Westside!"

The 51st&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth is returning to Emporia on June 29, 2024, for the sixth time and first since 2016. The West Team won the 50th&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth, 21-20, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Hays, Kansas. The West now holds a 31-17-2 advantage all-time and has not lost since 2018, with four wins and a tie (2022) since the last East victory in 2018.

“We’re excited to have both of these great coaches associated with our organization,” said Kansas Shrine Bowl Executive Director, B.J. Harris. “To be selected by your peers is an honor and reflects the type of skill and character both Coach Moody and Coach Pavlovich possess. We’re looking forward to working with both as we continue to grow the Kansas Shrine Bowl and maximize our impact on Shriners Children’s.”

The Kansas Shrine Bowl is an East vs. West, statewide all-star high school senior football game put on each year by the Kansas Shrine. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity that produces annual events and related activities, with net proceeds benefiting Shriners Children’s. The Kansas Shrine Bowl has sent over $3.7M to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The game has been played throughout Kansas each summer since 1974. Host cities have included Lawrence, Manhattan, Wichita, Topeka, Hays, Emporia, Pittsburg, Dodge City and Hutchinson.&nbsp; Beginning in 1974, the flagship event has been the East/West All-Star Football Game. As of 2023, the West leads the series with 31 wins, the East has 17 wins, and there have been two ties. Notable alumni include NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, former All-Pro Wide Receiver Jordy Nelson, former All-Pro NFL Defensive Back Terrance Newman, former Kansas State and Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Gary Spani, former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl Champion Linebacker Mark Simoneau and many others.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl also includes the Kansas Masonic All-State Marching Band Camp and Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Cheer Camp. Additional events include the Shriners Hospital Experience, Participant Appreciation Banquet, Parade, Golf Tournament and more.

All Shrine Bowl events are produced and presented to benefit Shriners Children’s. Shriners Children’s is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay.

The 51st&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas. The head coaches are selected from the group of assistant coaches in the previous year’s game. This selection is determined by a vote from the previous coaching staff, camp directors, trainers, and managers.The East team will be led by Wamego High School Head Coach, Weston Moody. Coach Moody is entering his sixth season as the Head Coach at Wamego High School, where he has compiled an overall record of 38-15. Wamego is coming off a 12-1 season that included their first ever state championship game appearance in 2022. Coach Moody was named the 4A Coach of the Year by multiple outlets following his program’s historic 2022 season."I am honored to be selected as the Head Coach of the Shrine Bowl East squad,” said East Head Coach Weston Moody. &nbsp;“I'm humbled to be able to play a small part in the efforts of the Shriners, who provide care to youth in need worldwide and highlight the best football players in the state of Kansas.&nbsp; I'm grateful for this opportunity, and it would not be possible without&nbsp;our players, staff, Wamego community and my family."&nbsp;McPherson High School Head Coach Jace Pavlovich will lead the 2024 Kansas Shrine Bowl West team. Coach Pavlovich is entering his ninth season as the Head Coach at McPherson High School where he has put together a career record of 72-18. Pavlovich enters the 2023 season tied with Tom Young as the program’s all-time wins leader. 🎧 EAGLE Media Sports Broadcast Schedule (8/28-9/3)

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Jake Rucker and Alex Isola both had three hits and four RBIs in tonight’s ballgame. Surge pitching also had yet another solid performance where they only allowed one run. The Wind Surge defeated the Travelers by a score of 11-1 and now lead the series three games to one.

Arkansas scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Locklear hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to right field that drove in a run. This would end up being their only run of the ball game.

The Wind Surge took the lead in the top of the third. Jake Rucker hit a line drive to right field for a two RBI single.

Wichita had a monster fourth inning where they drove in five runs. Rucker hit his second two RBI single of the ball game on a line drive to center field. Alex Isola then came to the plate and swung at the first pitch he saw for a three-run home run and the first home run of the series by either team.

The Wind Surge kept their bats hot in the top of the fifth. Yoyner Fajardo hit a line drive to center field for an RBI single. Tanner Schobel also ripped a line drive to center field. His was for a two RBI single. Isola hit in his fourth RBI of the game on a line drive to left field for a single as well. The Surge extended their lead to ten runs by the end of the half inning.

Marco Raya made his eighth start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched two and two thirds innings where he gave up only one run off two hits. He struck out a batter and walked two more. Carlos Luna earned the win and improved his record to (2-7).

Arkansas starting pitcher Alex Valverde pitched three innings where he gave up four runs off five hits. He struck out a batter and walked four more. He was credited with the loss.

The Wichita Wind Surge have won ten of their last 12 games and improve to (27-22, 55-62) and the Arkansas Travelers fall to (19-29, 64-53).

NOTES: The Wind Surge improve to a league best 16-6 in the month of August. Alex Isola extended his hit streak to seven games, in the streak he is batting .533, with two home runs and 16 RBI.

California wins Little League World Series 6-5 over Curacao on walk-off homer

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Louis Lappe hit a walk-off homer and California beat Curacao 6-5 in the Little League World Series championship on Sunday, despite giving up a four-run lead. Louis flipped his bat and threw his arms in the air as he trotted around the bases, leaping onto home plate before he was greeted by his teammates surrounding the batter's box. (AP) — NASCAR driver Ryan Preece is headed home from the hospital about 12 hours after his car rolled roughly a dozen times during a terrifying crash at Daytona International Speedway. Stewart-Haas Racing says Preece is traveling back to North Carolina after getting clearance from doctors at Halifax Health Medical Center. The team earlier said Preece was "awake, alert and mobile" and "had been communicating with family and friends." The 32-year-old Preece was able to climb out of his mangled No. 41 Ford on Saturday night with help before emergency workers put him on a gurney and into an ambulance. OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;– Kansas volleyball earned its second sweep in as many matches defeating Omaha 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-13) in the second round of the Omaha Invite at Baxter Arena Saturday in Omaha.

With the win, Kansas improved to 2-0 on the season, while Omaha dropped to 0-2.

It was a bit of a slow start for the Jayhawks against the Mavericks, as KU was down 0-4 right off the bat in the first set. However, big efforts from Toyosi Onabanjo and Camryn Turner, as well as Caroline Bien off the bench were crucial for bringing the Jayhawks back to life. Once Kansas&nbsp;finally took the lead at 11-10, back-to-back&nbsp;kills from London Davis forced an&nbsp;Omaha&nbsp;timeout at 13-10. This change in momentum&nbsp;started forcing multiple errors from the opposition. Despite UNO’s effort to close back in, Kansas kept its offense tight to take the set win with ease.&nbsp;

Things were even up throughout the first part of the second set, each team going point for point. Reagan Cooper was the true difference maker in this set and the rest of the match, going on a five-kill, one-block run midway through to push the Jayhawks ahead 17-13 and completely swing the momentum in Kansas’ favor. Cooper&nbsp;singlehandedly forced UNO into back-to-back timeouts, and from there, the Jayhawks were able to take care of the rest.&nbsp;

Kansas cruised to an easy 25-13 set three win with great offensive and defensive presence from everyone who checked in.

For the match, Kansas outhit Omaha .333 to .122. The Jayhawks were led by Cooper with 14 kills, while Davis tallied 10 kills. Turner led KU with 30 assists, while Raegan Burns paced KU with 13 digs, three more than Turner’s 10.

UP NEXTKansas will open its home portion of the 2023 regular season when it hosts the Kansas Invitational at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. 🏐 Kansas Volleyball Makes it 2-0 in Omaha, Downing Mavericks in 3-0 Victory

SEATTLE (AP) — Luis Castillo pitched seven shutout innings and the Seattle Mariners grabbed sole possession of first place in the AL West, beating the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Teoscar Hernández and Julio Rodríguez homered as Seattle won for the 11th time in 12 games. The Mariners also improved to a major league-best 36-14 since July 1 for their best 50-game stretch since they also went 36-14 from April 23-June 18, 2003.

Seattle (74-56) and Texas were tied for the AL West lead coming into the day, but the Rangers lost 7-6 to the Twins. Seattle trailed Texas by 7 1/2 games on Aug. 15.

It’s the latest the Mariners have had sole possession of first in a season since Aug. 24, 2003.

“We have a lot of baseball to go,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “There’s no question about it. But we have played extremely well, really since the first of July. And it’s a testament to our players. They just keep their head down and focus on getting better.”

The Royals put runners on second and third with two outs in the inning, but Justin Topa struck out Salvador Perez to preserve the one-run lead. Andrés Muñoz struck out the side in the ninth for his 10th save.

“You can feel the positivity and the good vibes here,” Castillo said. “It’s a team that just wants to go out there and win.”

Marsh allowed three runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out nine in his seventh career start.

Kansas City lost for the 10th time in 12 games. Nine of its past 10 losses are by two runs or fewer.

“Super frustrating series,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Really a frustrating road trip. Played better than what the results ended up.”

CORSICANA, Texas — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College opened the 2023 season with a bunch of new faces. Thirty-four players from last year's national championship runner-up team moved on to four-year schools.

Despite returning zero offensive starters, the Blue Dragons picked up where last year's team left off.

In 2022, then-No. 3 Hutchinson thumped then-No. 13 Navarro 42-0. It was the first time in 257 games that the Bulldogs went scoreless.

With new faces like quarterback Samari Collier and wide receiver Tre Richardson, the Dragons once again put up 42 points — after an inauspicious start.

The first two Dragon possessions went three-and-out before the third possession was squandered by penalties.

"We just needed the reps at it," coach Drew Dallas said of the slow start offensively. "We got a new group of guys, new quarterback, new offensive coordinator. There's a lot of 'new.' (Navarro) came out and showed us something a little bit different than we'd seen on film."

No. 11 Navarro got on the board first with an Eric Acosta 31-yard field goal. The seven-play, 41-yard drive was capped just six seconds into the second quarter.

Hutchinson answered with 14-straight points.

The Dragons capped a 14-play, 74-yard drive with a Brandon Epton Jr. five-yard rush.

With 1:36 left in the half, Tre Richardson hauled in a 57-yard bomb from Collier to put the Dragons up 14-3.

The deep ball was part of a 99-yard drive that took 4:12 off the clock.

Bulldog punter James Ingham had pinned Hutchinson at its own one-yard line, before the Dragons connected in the passing game.

Collier finished 12 of 16 for 160 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Tristan Smith on what was nearly a 14-yard touchdown. Smith battled to the goal line and lost the ball as he stretched for the score.

Fortunately, ManMan Singleton fell on the ball in the end zone to preserve the score. That touchdown was part of Hutchinson's 28 unanswered points to close the game.

After Navarro hit another 31-yard field goal in the third quarter to pull within 14-6, Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the house.

After the Singleton end-zone recovery, the Blue Dragons got a 32-yard scamper from Richardson, his third score of the night.

Richardson scored on a 57-yard reception, a 92-yard kickoff return and a 32-yard rush.

Jordy Scruggs finished the scoring with a 52-yard pick-six.

Hutchinson held Navarro to negative-six-yards rushing in the first half. Quarterback Dane Jentsch found some running room late against the third-stringers to finish with a team-leading 66 rushing yards.

Jentsch was just 15 of 36 for 146 yards and an interception. He was sacked four times.

The Dragons held the Bulldogs to 90 rushing yards and 236 total yards for the night.

"Our defensive effort was great all night long," Dallas said. "Even when (Navarro) had big plays, we were able to bounce back and hold them to field goals."

Meanwhile, the Dragon offense racked up 398 yards on 61 plays (6.5 yards per play).

The Bulldogs were held to 3.5 yards per play on 67 tries.

 </figure>CORSICANA, Texas — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College opened the 2023 season with a bunch of new faces. Thirty-four players from last year's national championship runner-up team moved on to four-year schools.Despite returning zero offensive starters, the Blue Dragons picked up where last year's team left off.In 2022, then-No. 3 Hutchinson thumped then-No. 13 Navarro 42-0. It was the first time in 257 games that the Bulldogs went scoreless.<figure>

The seven-play, 41-yard drive was capped just six seconds into the second quarter.Hutchinson answered with 14-straight points.The Dragons capped a 14-play, 74-yard drive with a Brandon Epton Jr. five-yard rush.With 1:36 left in the half, Tre Richardson hauled in a 57-yard bomb from Collier to put the Dragons up 14-3.The deep ball was part of a 99-yard drive that took 4:12 off the clock.Bulldog punter James Ingham had pinned Hutchinson at its own one-yard line, before the Dragons connected in the passing game.Collier finished 12 of 16 for 160 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Tristan Smith on what was nearly a 14-yard touchdown. Smith battled to the goal line and lost the ball as he stretched for the score.Fortunately, ManMan Singleton fell on the ball in the end zone to preserve the score.
