LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's fight song begins, “There is no place like Nebraska.” When it comes to volleyball, those words never rang more true than Wednesday night.

The Cornhuskers laid claim to the world record for largest attendance at a women's sporting event with 92,003 filling Memorial Stadium for their volleyball match against Omaha.

The university took aim at the record last spring when it announced it would hold a daylong celebration of a sport that enjoys immense popularity in this state of fewer than 2 million.

“We took a chance by playing in Memorial Stadium, and to go for the record and break it. ... I don’t think anybody could have envisioned that when this whole thing started,” Nebraska coach John Cook said. “It feels like a great accomplishment for this sport called volleyball played by women. It’s a state treasure. We proved it.”

The event began with an exhibition between in-state Division II powers Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State and was followed by the Huskers' three-set sweep of Omaha in a regular-season match. Country artist Scotty McCreery performed afterward.

The previous&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/winter-olympics-womens-soccer-sports-soccer-barcelona-0abf21b88c76e5183fda8cc4ac03244a">attendance record was 91,648, set during a Champions League soccer match</a>&nbsp;when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-2 at the Camp Nou Stadium in 2022.

Memorial Stadium's official capacity is just over 85,000 for football, but that number was higher for this event because there were seats and standing room on the field.

Fans in red and white started their tailgate parties outside the stadium hours before first serve of an exhibition Wayne State won in three sets. The stadium was one-quarter full at the start of that match and gradually filled to capacity as players for Omaha and Nebraska were warming up.

There was a flyover during the national anthem and, minutes before first serve, Cook led his Huskers into the stadium to the Tunnel Walk, the longtime tradition of the football team. Synchronized chants of “Go Big Red!” were heard all around.

Conditions were 83 degrees, clear skies and a south wind listed at 4-mph at court level with gusts that sometimes moved the ball in unpredictable ways.

Though 91,648 was widely acknowledged as the women’s sports attendance record, at least one match at the unofficial&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rsssf.org/tablesm/mundo-women71.html">1971 Women’s World Cup in Mexico City reportedly drew 110,000 people.</a>

The American record attendance for a women’s sporting event had been 90,185 for the 1999 World Cup soccer final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California — the game where&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/23/sports/soccer/23seconds.html">Brandi Chastain ripped off her shirt</a>&nbsp;after scoring the decisive penalty shot for the U.S. win.

The NCAA does not track attendance across all sports, but associate director of media coordination and statistics Jeff Williams said a crowd of 90,000-plus was easily among the largest for a non-football game. A 2010 outdoor&nbsp;<a href="https://collegehockeyinc.com/stats/boxes11.php?mmicmsu1.d11">hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor drew more than 113,000 fans.</a>

A message seeking comment from officials of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/">Guinness World Records</a>&nbsp;was not immediately returned.

Nebraska has sold out 306 consecutive regular-season matches. (Wednesday's event won't count toward the streak because it is not being held on the team's Devaney Center court.) The Huskers have led the nation in attendance every season since 2013, and eight of the top nine crowds in NCAA volleyball history are matches that have involved Nebraska.

Nebraska has won five national championships in volleyball, and its program is one of the few in Division I women's sports that turns a profit — $1 million last year, according to athletic department CFO Doug Ewald.

“This is a statement on Title IX, and having two daughters of my own, what Title IX has done for women's sports is huge,” fan Troy Pfannenstiel of Omaha said before the matches.

Chancellor Rodney Bennett canceled classes for the day. NCAA President Charlie Baker, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti were on hand, as was Gov. Jim Pillen. So were Husker volleyball players who were part of iconic coach Terry Pettit's teams over four decades. High school teams from across a state stretching 430 miles border to border were excused from classes to attend.

There are 75 women from the state of Nebraska who are on Division I volleyball rosters this season. At 44 players per million in population, the state trails only Hawaii (67 per million) in Division I players produced per capita, according to volleyball statistician and historian Rich Kern of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.richkern.com/vb/FreePage.asp">RichKern.com.</a>

“You don’t think you’re going to be part of a world record event, and seeing how much everyone supports volleyball and wanted to be part of that record is awesome to see,” Omaha's Shayla McCormick said.

Volleyball has surpassed basketball as the No. 1 girls high school team sport in the United States. It’s long been No. 1 in Nebraska.

About 7,000 girls play high school volleyball in the state. Volleyball has been played in varying forms in Nebraska since the early 1900s. For many years, girls volleyball matches were warmup acts for boys basketball games. Volleyball became a sanctioned sport in 1972 and took off in the late 1970s when Pettit invited many of the state’s high school coaches to work at his camps in Lincoln.

Pettit also conducted so-called “satellite” clinics in small towns across the state. In a place where boys grow up dreaming of becoming Cornhusker football players, many girls are equally passionate about some day playing volleyball for a Nebraska team that annually ranks among the nation’s elite.

Ella Beck, 10, came with a group from tiny Pierce to see her first college volleyball match and root for her favorite player, setter Lexi Rodriguez.

Neveah Kehr, 10, came with her mom, Nicki, from Bismarck, North Dakota, to be part of the event. Nicki graduated from Nebraska, and she brought up her daughter watching the Huskers on television.

Neveah wore the No. 5 jersey of middle blocker Bekka Allick at a pep rally before the matches and, with more than 1,000 fans cheering, was invited to walk to where the players stood and was introduced to the woman she called her idol.

Neveah teared up, and Bekka gave her a hug.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1976">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;Radio Show returns to the airwaves on Wednesday night, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1976">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;TV Show is back for another season as K-State Sports Properties, a property of LEARFIELD, announced the show lineup.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The radio show will air every Wednesday night, 7-8 p.m., beginning today (August 30) and will continue to originate from Powercat Sports Grill on the west side of Manhattan (3011 Anderson Avenue). The show, hosted by the Voice of the Wildcats, Wyatt Thompson, will be held every Wednesday throughout the season with the exception of Thanksgiving week (November 22).

🏈 Chris Klieman Radio Show debuts Wednesday, TV Show on Monday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – As K-State football fans prepare to descend upon Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the home opener Saturday against SEMO, fans are alerted to the following construction projects in and around the Manhattan area that could impact travel and parking plans. 

I-70 at Junction City –&nbsp;A pavement replacement project is underway between Exit 295 on the west and mile marker 302 on the east of Junction City. The passing lanes in each direction will have periodic closures to allow for crossover construction as the project continues. The speed limit is reduced in this area and delays are anticipated with heavy gameday traffic. Please allow for additional travel time to and from the stadium and use caution in the work zone.

North Campus Corridor –&nbsp;Kimball Avenue is fully open, allowing access to all stadium and auxiliary parking lots.

Parking Lots –&nbsp;With the completion of the Morgan Family Volleyball Arena/Morris Family Olympic Training Center, Gate 1 from College Avenue is open again to all Ahearn Fund members assigned parking in the West stadium lot. Gate 3 (from College Avenue) and Gate 5 (from Kimball Avenue) are also available. On the east side of the stadium, the only change this season is that Ahearn Fund members assigned to Lot E-1 will be required to exit postgame out of Gate 7 eastbound onto Kimball Avenue to help safely expedite exiting traffic from Lot E-2 on the south end of the Shamrock Practice Facility.

Satellite Parking Lots –&nbsp;The signal light at Gate 8/Agriculture Road (Grain Science Center) is operational. Parking in the Grain Science Center Lot for eastbound and westbound traffic is accessible only from the signal.

Fans parking in the Agronomy Lot north of the stadium will be required to enter from the new frontage road on College Avenue just north of Kimball Avenue. This is the only entrance into the Agronomy Lot.

Final construction of the frontage road from the Grain Science Center to Denison Avenue will be ongoing through the fall. Along with the construction of a new commercial office building just west of the KSU Foundation, parking has been reduced at the Foundation but is still accessible from Denison Avenue at this time. Additional satellite parking is available at the Equine Center off Denison Avenue to the north of the Fire Station and in the new Bullpen Lot off Kimball Avenue east of Denison Avenue at the Discovery Way entrance to NBAF.

All parking lots around Bill Snyder Family Stadium open five hours prior to kickoff (1 p.m. this Saturday). As always, fans are encouraged to arrive early as pregame traffic could become congested.

A free shuttle sponsored by the K-State Union, Housing and Dining Services and K-State Campus Store is available to fans with free parking in the K-State Parking Garage. The shuttle begins two hours prior to kickoff from the south circle on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, between the K-State Parking Garage and the Union. Passengers will be dropped off near the Jardine Plaza Neighborhood. Return trips resume with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, and rides will continue until approximately one hour after the end of the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;Following an unbeaten second week of the season, K-State saw a pair of players collect Big 12 weekly league honors. Sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/murphy-sheaff/11202">Murphy Sheaff</a>&nbsp;was named Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, while freshman forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/jo-sees/11212">Jo Sees</a>&nbsp;was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week in an announcement by the league office on Wednesday.&nbsp;

In addition to her Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honor, Sheaff was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Sheaff is the first Wildcat goalkeeper to be named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. She is the third Wildcat netminder to earn Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors.Sees is the fifth K-State player to be named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week and is the first since&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/sophie-harlan/11064">Sophie Harlan</a>&nbsp;earned the distinction in October of 2022.&nbsp;For the week, Sheaff was 1-0-1 with four saves while facing 17 total shots and adding her second and third shutouts to her ledger this season. ⚽ WSOC: K-State’s Sheaff, Sees earn Big 12 weekly honors

PGA Tour golfer Gary Woodland announced Wednesday that he will have surgery on Sept. 18 to remove a lesion from his brain.&nbsp;

Woodland is a native of Topeka, Kansas and played high school golf at Shawnee Heights in Tecumseh. Woodland then played collegiately at the University of Kansas.&nbsp;

The 39-year old is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

Woodland turned pro in&nbsp;2007&nbsp;and briefly competed on the circuit then known as the Nationwide Tour, now the Korn Ferry Tour. Woodland has competed on the PGA Tour since 2009.

Head Coach Brandon Schneider has announced a challenging non-conference schedule that awaits the Kansas women’s basketball team in the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Kansas will play 11 non-conference games, with five of those to be played at Allen Fieldhouse, while six are on the road or at a neutral site. The Jayhawks will host former conference foe Nebraska, travel to Power 5 opponents Penn State and Texas A&amp;M and hit the road to continue an in-state series with Wichita State. Additionally, Kansas will compete at the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic and face national-ranked opponents in Virginia Tech and UConn.

The Jayhawks open the season on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at home against Northwestern State prior to visiting Penn State on Monday, Nov. 13. The Jayhawks then head to Municipal Auditorium for a neutral-site matchup against Kansas City before heading to the Cayman Islands Classic during the week of Thanksgiving.

KU returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 30, then travels to College Station, Texas, take on Texas A&amp;M on Dec. 3. The Jayhawks are at home for three of the next four games, hosting Houston Christian (Dec. 6), Central Arkansas (Dec. 16) and Nebraska (Dec. 20) while traveling to face Wichita State at Charles Koch Arena on Dec. 10.

On June 20, the Big 12 announced conference opponents for the 2023-24 season, with the full schedule to be released later. Kansas will face Baylor, BYU, Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma twice, while also hosting Cincinnati, Houston, Oklahoma State and West Virginia at Allen Fieldhouse. Opponents the Jayhawks will face only on the road include UCF, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech.

The Jayhawks finished 25-11 last season after winning six games in March and early April to claim the 2023 WNIT Championship. Kansas returns four starters from that team, led by All-Big 12 First Team selections Taiyanna Jackson and Zakiyah Franklin, and three-time All-Big 12 honoree Holly Kersgieter. KU has won at least 20 games and advanced to the postseason in each of the past two seasons.

LANDOVER, Md. —&nbsp;The&nbsp;Washington Commanders&nbsp;are keeping undrafted rookie receiver Mitchell Tinsley on the 53-man roster after a strong performance in Saturday's preseason finale,&nbsp;per the Washington Post.

Tinsley attended&nbsp;Hutchinson Community College&nbsp;in for two years, recording 57 receptions for 656 yards and four touchdowns for the&nbsp;Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

In 2020, Tinsley transferred to&nbsp;Western Kentucky University&nbsp;to play for the&nbsp;Hill toppers. In his first year there, he had 43 receptions for 377 yards and four touchdowns. As a 14-game starter in 2021, Tinsley had 87 receptions for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In 2022, Tinsley transferred to&nbsp;Penn State&nbsp;to play for the&nbsp;Nittany Lions.In his first game at Penn State, he had seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. In 13 starts, Tinsley recorded 51 receptions for 577 yards and 5 touchdowns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tinsley is from Lee Summit, Missouri.&nbsp; He attended&nbsp;Lee's Summit High School, where he only played one year of football, recording 19 receptions for 350 yards and six&nbsp;touchdowns&nbsp;as a senior.

Tinsley signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in May of this year.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Tinsley capitalized on his four targets by making three catches producing 89 yards of offense and nearly scoring two touchdowns for&nbsp;Washington in the process.

“I think it went pretty well,” Tinsley said when asked after the game about his preseason and training camp overall. “I took advantage of my opportunities when I got them and I think I capitalized on them.”

One touchdown was confirmed, but the other was overturned on review and fellow rookie Brycen Tremayne got the honors of scoring from one-yard out on the next play.&nbsp;

It was a great game for Tinsley, and it was one he needed after dropping two golden opportunities to shine in the second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.&nbsp;

Tinsley signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State, the same school that starting receiver Jahan Dotson played for.

Now, Tinsley will have to report back to Ashburn, Virginia for work on Wednesday.&nbsp;

🏈 Former Blue Dragon Mitchell Tinsley makes Washington Commanders roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning, helping rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. Hayes hit his 11th homer of the season 424 feet to left-center to erase a one-run deficit. In the ninth inning, Liover Peguero added a three-run homer and Jack Suwinski scored on a Kansas City error. The Pirates won the series opener 5-0 on Monday and will try to win three in a row on Wednesday for only second time since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh hasn't swept a series since June 27-29 against San Diego. Luis Ortiz (3-4) allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of relief to get the victory. Carlos Hernandez (1-9), one of five Kansas City pitchers, gave up the home run to Hayes and took the loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning, helping rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Hayes hit his 11th homer of the season 424 feet to left-center to erase a one-run deficit. In the ninth inning, Liover Peguero added a three-run homer and Jack Suwinski scored on a Kansas City error.

"It feels great," Hayes said. "Those are the type of moments you grow up playing the game for — late in the game tying the game up or taking the lead."

The Pirates won the series opener 5-0 on Monday and will try to win three in a row on Wednesday for only the second time since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh hasn't swept a series since June 27-29 against San Diego.

Luis Ortiz (3-4) allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of relief to get the victory.

"Ortiz was outstanding," Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. "He was totally in control of his delivery. The big inning was when he got out of the bases-loaded jam. He gave up one run, but he stayed composed and did a nice job."

Carlos Hernandez (1-9), one of five Kansas City pitchers, gave up the home run to Hayes and took the loss.

The Royals lost a series for the seventh time in eight tries and would need to go 16-12 in their final 28 games to avoid matching the franchise record of 106 losses from 2005.

Kansas City squandered a solid effort by starter Cole Ragans, who allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one in carrying a shutout through seven innings. With the nine strikeouts, he finished the month of August with 53 Ks, the second-most in Royals history behind Dennis Leonard's 55 in June 1977. He has a 1.73 ERA in seven starts with the Royals since being acquired in mid-July from Texas for Aroldis Chapman.

Shelton gave credit to Ragans when asked what changed after seven fruitless innings on offense.

"Ragans was out of the game, quite honestly," he said. "That's really good stuff, a left-handed fastball at 99 and a change-up and a cutter. That's a good young pitcher."

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro was equally impressed.

"(A) continuation of what he's been doing," he said. "All his pitches (were) effective, around the zone, in the zone, getting chase when he needed it, swing-and-miss in the zone. I would guess he might say it wasn't his best command. He lost some balls arm-side, but was able to correct. But, his stuff's so good that even when he was behind in the count he would get swing and miss."

The first hit of the game came with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, when Bobby Witt Jr. lined a single into left field. Salvador Perez then lined a single off the glove of Hayes, sending Witt to third with no outs. After striking out MJ Melendez, Ortiz walked Nelson Velazquez, loading the bases. Drew Waters hit a line drive that tipped off Connor Joe's glove at first. Waters was retired, 4-3, but he picked up the game's first RBI.

Ragans allowed his first baserunner on a leadoff walk to Joe in the fifth. He later gave up a two-out single to Peguero, ending his no-hit bid. He struck out Jack Suwinski to end the threat.

Steven Cruz made his MLB debut Tuesday for Kansas City. He was acquired in the offseason in a trade for Michael A Taylor from the Twins. He became the 34th pitcher to appear in a game this season for Kansas City, extending a club record set last year at 32.

The Royals added two runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Freddy Fermin.

Royals: RHP Steven Cruz was selected from Triple-A Omaha. In a corresponding move, LHP Taylor Hearn was optioned to Triple-A Omaha following Monday night's game.

The Pirates and Royals conclude their three-game series Wednesday night. The Pirates will send Andre Jackson (0-1, 4.91 ERA) to the mound. Kansas City has not announced a starter.

Garry Jr. hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. The solo home run flew over the right field wall and extended the Surge lead back out to three.

The Wichita Wind Surge have won 13 of their last 15 games and improve to (30-22, 58-62) and the San Antonio Missions fall to (25-27, 62-59).

The freshman from Wichita, had two goals and one assist in the now-No. 16 Blue Dragons' 5-0 KJCCC victory over Seward County on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. She earned her first career game-winning goal. It was her second multi-goal game of the season.

The Blue Dragons went 1-0-1 last week with a scoreless draw at Garden City and the five-goal win over the Saints.

TRE RICHARDSON – Co-Offensive and Special Teams Player of the WeekRichardson had one of best debuts in Blue Dragon history on Saturday. The freshman from Topeka accounted for 268 all-purpose yards against the Bulldogs and scored three touchdowns – a 32-yard run, 57-yard reception and a 92-yard kickoff return.

Richardson had 32 rush yards, 93 receiving yards, 113 kickoff return yards and 30 punt return yards The 268 all-purpose yards by Richardson is second in a Blue Dragon debut only to Roger Frazier's 330 all-purpose yards against Dodge City in 2005.

Richardson's third-quarter 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the key play of the game. With Hutchinson leading 14-6 after Navarro took more than 7 minutes off the clock to kick a field goal, Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and a 21-6 lead just 12 seconds later.

JORDAN SCRUGGS – Defensive Teams Player of the WeekScruggs, a sophomore from Overland Park, had a Pick-Six in a dominant defensive performance by Hutchinson.

Scruggs jumped a route for an interceptions and traveled 52 yards untouched for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Scruggs had two total tackles.

"Austin is quite deserving of this promotion, "said Hughes. "He carries the responsibilities of a trailblazer in a sport where black coaches are alarmingly underrepresented. He always does this with composure grace and integrity.""He has become a great role model for all young coaches. More importantly, he has established himself as one of the best offensive minds in college baseball and a tireless recruiter. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;It’s officially football season as the Kansas Jayhawks kick off their season on Friday, Sept. 1 against Missouri State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Fans can expect to see&nbsp;the return of popular and some new&nbsp;game day enhancements for the 2023 season.

The Jayhawks play host to seven home games in 2023, including the season opener against Missouri State on Friday, Sept. 1 under the lights at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The Jayhawks will host Illinois on Friday, Sept. 8, before taking on Big 12 opponents BYU, UCF, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Kansas State throughout the 2023 season.

Help welcome the Jayhawks back to the Booth by joining us for the Hawk Walk! New for 2023, the Jayhawks will walk down “The Hill” to the locker room two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff. They will be dropped off near the Campanile, with Hawk Walk taking place as they walk down the Hill. Fans can line the walk and greet them as they arrive for the day’s game.

Concessions Happy Hour is back! From 90 minutes to 30 minutes before kickoff, fans can enjoy concessions happy hour – an offer that allows fans to get items like hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, pretzels and beverages (sodas and beer) at a discounted price. The happy hour pricing can be found&nbsp;at these select stands on the lower-level concourse: 4, 6, 21, and 23.

Fans can expect to see some new food options around David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, including new additions Pizza Hut, Uplift Coffee and Biggs BBQ. All concessions are now 100% cash less and take all forms of credit and debit card, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Gameday on the Hill Presented by Electric Park

Enjoy the re-imagined Gameday on the Hill before every game during the 2023 home season. You will find entertainment from local cover bands and DJs, and food trucks at the bottom of the Campanile hill.

Gameday on the Hill will feature a fan tailgate that includes open-air and tented seating and socializing areas, TV’s, tailgating games,&nbsp;light snacks and a cash bar. Admission comes with&nbsp;one drink token&nbsp;which you will receive upon check-in. Non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages will be available.
