GARDEN CITY – Freshman goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/slothower_karsyn_3puo">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;came up big several times on Wednesday night to help the No. 18 Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team to a scoreless draw with the Garden City Broncbusters in the 2023 Jayhawk Conference opener at Broncbuster Stadium.

Slothower registered 10 saves, with three huge stops in the final four minutes to preserve the tie, just the third scoreless draw in program history.

The No. 18-ranked Blue Dragons (1-0-1, 0-0-1 KJCCC) will play host to Seward County at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. Garden City is now 2-0-1, 0-0-1 in the league.

The tie is the first time in 31 all-time meetings with Garden City that the Blue Dragons relinquished a point in the standings to the Broncbusters. Hutchinson leads the all-time series with Garden City at 30-0-1. Hutchinson has registered 22 shutouts in series history.

Slothower became just the 13th Blue Dragon goalkeeper in program history to register 10 or more saves in a single game. The last Dragon keeper to reach double figures in saves was Caroline Howard, who had 11 saves against Rose State on August 28, 2016. Slothower tied Ashley Perez, Bailey Shupe and Vickie Dukart for 13th on the Blue Dragon single-game saves list.

Slothower was tested right away with a save just 1:33 into the contest. With 17 minutes to play in the first half, the freshman keeper deflected the ball for a save on a direct free kick straight away from 20 yards out. Slothower immediately made another save on a point-blank shot resulting from a Garden City corner kick. Slothower had six saves in the first half.

The Blue Dragon goalkeeper kept the game scoreless with 17:40 to play when she stopped a Buster breakaway with an aggressive play going 1-on-1 with Jessica Newton.

The final minutes were heart-stopping as Slothower made two late saves and had a Buster sharp-angled shot glance off the right goal post with a little more than a minute to play.

Each team fired 14 shots with 10 shots on goal. Garden City goalkeeper Ava Wilson had seven saves.

Late in the first half, the Blue Dragons couldn't convert on some prime scoring chances as shots by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/marx_katharina_hedq">Katharina Marx</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoy_destiny_838y">Destiny Hoy</a>&nbsp;and Jada Wyatt were all legally stopped by scrambling Garden City defenders with Wilson out of position.

The Blue Dragons forced five corner kicks in the first 6 minutes of the second half. The best scoring chance from those set pieces was a header by Wyatt.

Ragans limited the A's to two singles, improving to 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in six starts since being traded from Texas on June 30. The left-hander has struck out 47 and walked 10 in 34 2/3 innings with the Royals. Dairon Blanco hit his first career homer off A's starter Adrián Martínez in the third inning to put Kansas City ahead.

"I just tried to attack today, go at the guys, No walks was, I think, the biggest thing for me. I didn't give up any free baserunners. I made them earn their thing and trust my defense behind me and go from there," Ragans said.

"That was probably one of the best performances we've seen all season on the mound," Oakland manager Mark Kotsay added. "You face that type of stuff and it's a tough day. We really didn't get any good swings off today."

Dairon Blanco hit his first career homer off A's starter Adrián Martínez in the third inning to put Kansas City ahead.

"I'm really happy for him," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "He really got into that ball, a slider. That guy is tough on righties, too. For him to get that, I really feel good for him."

Martínez (0-2) allowed one run on three hits and a walk, striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.

Drew Waters added to the lead with an RBI triple in the fourth. Maikel Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Witt homered in the fifth. He also singled and walked to help the Royals snap a four-game losing streak.

Oakland loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning, but Carlos Hernández retired Seth Brown and Zack Gelof to maintain the shutout.

"Bases loaded, there's no room for error," Quatraro said. "He continued to execute good pitches. His fastball was lively today, and he mixed his curveball and slider in, so they had to respect all three."

Hernández also pitched the ninth inning to record his third save in six opportunities.

Gelof went 0 for 4, ending a 19-game on-base streak. The A's were seeking their third series sweep of the season.

"Any time you win a game, you feel good for the guys," Quatraro said. "We were in all three of these games and we were able to come out with this one. It's better to go into an off-day feeling that way than getting swept, for sure."

The Athletics selected LHP Sean Newcomb from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned LHP Hogan Harris. Newcomb was acquired from the Giants on Tuesday for minor league OF Trenton Brooks and pitched a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout and a walk. Oakland transferred LHP Richard Lovelady (strained left forearm) to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster.

Royals: Following an off-day, RHP Brady Singer (8-9, 5.04 ERA) opens a three-game series at Seattle on Friday opposite Mariners RHP Bryce Miller (8-4, 3.78).

Athletics: LHP Ken Waldichuk (2-7, 5.91) opens a four-game road series against the White Sox on Thursday. Chicago counters with RHP Jesse Scholtens (1-6, 3.79).

⚾ Witt homers and Cole Ragans strikes out 11 as Royals blank A's

Little Rock, AR - David Festa pitched an impressive outing in tonight’s ball game. He struck out seven Arkansas batters over five innings and laid the groundwork for the Surge to cruise to victory after allowing only one run. Alex Isola came in clutch with three RBIs and the Wind Surge defeated the Travelers 5-1. The series is now tied at a game apiece.

The Wind Surge took an early lead in the top of the first. Isola hit his first RBI of the ball game on a soft fly ball to center field for an RBI single.

Wichita was gifted a run in the top of the fifth. A throwing error and a wild pitch allowed Will Holland to reach home after he singled and stole second base.

Arkansas was held without a hit until the fifth inning. A ball dropped in shallow left after it hit off the sprinting shortstop’s glove for the first hit. Logan Warmoth drove in the only run of the ballgame for Arkansas. He hit a two-out RBI single on a ground ball that ricocheted off the Wind Surge pitcher’s leg to second base.

Isola hit his second RBI of the day in the top of the seventh. He hit a soft line drive for an RBI single with two outs to give the Wind Surge a two-run lead.

The Wind Surge extended their lead in the top of the ninth. Another wild pitch by Travelers pitching allowed a run to score and then Isola hit his third RBI of the game on a line drive to center field.

David Festa made his 19th start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched five innings and only allowed one run off two hits. He struck out seven batters and walked none. He earned the win, and his record improves to (3-3).

Arkansas starting pitcher Blas Castano pitched three and a third innings where he gave up one run off two hits. He struck out three batters and walked three more. He was credited with the loss.

The Wichita Wind Surge improved to (25-22, 53-62) and the Arkansas Travelers fall to (19-27, 64-51).

NOTES: Seth Gray extended his hitting streak to ten games. Wind Surge Manager Ramon Borrego earned his 200th career win with tonight’s victory.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani won't pitch for the rest of the season because of a torn ligament in his right elbow, Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday night. The Angels don't yet know whether the major league homers leader and 10-game winner will need surgery to repair the UCL ligament nearly five years after the two-way superstar had his first Tommy John surgery in late 2018 following his AL Rookie of the Year season. Ohtani left the mound abruptly Wednesday in the second inning of his start against Cincinnati in the opener of a doubleheader. The injury will have a massive effect on baseball's free agent market this winter with Ohtani headed to free agency.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman calls this season 'a disaster'

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says this season has "been a disaster." New York is 61-65, on track for its worst season in more than 30 years. CINCINNATI (AP) — Lionel Messi had two assists and converted in a shootout to lead Inter Miami over MLS-leading Cincinnati 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw and into a U.S. Open Cup final against Houston. Miami and remained unbeaten in eight matches with Messi heading into his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday at the New York Red Bulls. The Atlantic Coast Conference is making progress toward an expansion that could grab Stanford and California from the sinking Pac-12, a person with direct knowledge of the ACC's potential move told The Associated Press. John Isner says he will retire from professional tennis after playing at the U.S. Open. The 38-year-old American announced Wednesday on social media that he is ready to end a career that included one Grand Slam semifinal appearance and a victory in the longest match in the sport's history. The U.S. Open begins Monday in New York. Isner reached a career-best ranking of No. 8 in 2018, shortly after reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon, won 16 singles titles and has hit more than 14,000 aces, an ATP Tour record. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday there has been no communication with Chris Jones, one day after the All-Pro defensive tackle indicated on social media that his contract holdout could stretch well into the regular season.

Jones is entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million deal. The Chiefs had been talking with his representatives about a long-term contract, but those negotiations have seemingly grown more contentious as the sides dig in, and with their Super Bowl title defense beginning in a little more than two weeks against the Lions.

“There's been no communication so I don't know what's going to happen there,” Reid said after the last practice open to reporters before the Chiefs' preseason finale Saturday against the Browns. “The game goes on. That's how it works.”

Jones posted&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/StoneColdJones/status/1694014694552379898?s=20">a photograph of a chalkboard on social media Tuesday</a>&nbsp;with the message, “If it's out of your hands, it deserves freedom from your mind also.” That led to a back-and-forth with fans, and when one asked how long he was willing to stay away from the team, Jones replied that he could make an appearance around Week 8 — nearly halfway through the season.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chris-jones-kansas-city-chiefs-d5c737b22c4307ec7f8aae853561357b">Jones has been piling up daily fines</a>&nbsp;of $50,000 for missing a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-chris-jones-camp-46c0c4fe762efc3077fe14035e118db7">mandatory minicamp over the summer along with all of training camp</a>, and he has proven his willingness to forfeit his game check of about $1.1 million for each game he is absent.

When one fan brought up the hefty bill, Jones replied: “I can afford it.”

Jones has not stated publicly what he is demanding, but the assumption is that he wants to be the second-highest paid defensive tackle in the league behind the Rams' Aaron Donald, who is working on a three-year, $95 million deal.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he's been in touch with Jones, but that his contract situation is rarely discussed.

“I don't think anyone expected him to not be here now,” Mahomes said, “but that's part of the negotiations. I'm not looking down on him for that. He has some stuff he's trying to get done and that he feels like he needs to get done right now.”

The 29-year-old Jones is coming off the best season of his seven-year career. He matched a career best with 15 1/2 sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered one while starting every game. And Jones might have been even better in the playoffs, especially the AFC title game against the Bengals, when he hit quarterback Joe Burrow five times and had his first two postseason sacks.

“We stay in contact with him all the time. He's in good spirits,” Mahomes said. “He's a guy that loves football, loves playing for the Chiefs. It's a hard time for all players whenever this stuff comes up. You want to play. You want to be out there. But at the same time, you want to take care of your family.”

In the meantime, the Chiefs are treating Jones' absence as if he was injured, rotating several defensive tackles into his spot during practice. They got some help when Turk Wharton returned to practice after dealing with some swelling in the knee, and veterans Derrick Nnadi and Danny Shelton along with sixth-round pick Keondre Coburn have been in the mix.

But none of them has the pass rushing impact of Jones, whose 65 sacks are fifth most in franchise history, and that puts the Chiefs in a bind. They released Frank Clark in the offseason to free up salary cap space, but his replacement, Charles Omenihu, is suspended for the first six games of the regular season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

That means the Chiefs' pass rush must lean even more heavily on second-year defensive end George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, their first-round pick out of Kansas State, who missed most of the offseason because of thumb surgery.

“You have to have depth everywhere. You have to have guys that step up when their number is called,” Mahomes said. “Yeah, you want to have great players like Chris, but you have to be ready to step up.”

Asked whether the holdout would affect Jones' standing in the locker room, where he is one of the longest-tenured Chiefs and a leading voice on the defense, Mahomes replied: “It doesn't hurt his relationship with any of us.”

"When he comes back," Mahomes said, “we'll welcome him with open arms.”

Even if that doesn't happen until Week 8.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks are represented by six players on the 11th Annual Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List. Earning a spot on the list are quarterback Jalon Daniels, wide receiver Luke Grimm, safety Kenny Logan Jr., offensive linemen Mike Novitsky and Dominick Puni, and linebacker Craig Young.

The watch list is composed of 720 position players who were evaluated by the Senior Bowl staff and identified by the scouting team as the “best of the best” draft prospects at every level of college football. Every player on the list is eligible to participate in an all-star game as either a 2019 high school graduate or a true four-year player.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. The longest continual-running all-star game has taken place in Mobile the past 74 years. More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams, and over 1,100 media members from around the country were credentialed last year. In each of the past three years, the Reese’s Senior Bowl has had 100 or more players drafted and over 40 percent of the entire draft class, which are both record-setting figures for any all-star game.

Daniels has previously been selected to six award watch lists, in addition to being named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He appears on watch lists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Manning Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the Maxwell Award and the Wuerffel Trophy.

Grimm led the Jayhawks in receptions (52) and touchdowns (6) last season, while ranking second on the team with 623 receiving yards. He’s appeared in 28 games at KU over the past three years, totaling 93 receptions for 1,227 cards and 11 touchdowns.

Logan Jr. has been KU’s leading tackler in each of the past three seasons and earlier this month he was named to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is presented to the most versatile player in major college football. Logan has excelled on defense with over 100 tackles in each of the past two seasons, and on special teams, where he has averaged 23.5 yards per return for his career.

Novitsky has started all 25 games at center for the Jayhawks the past two seasons. Last season, he anchored an offensive line that ranked No. 7 in the country with just 12 sacks allowed. Novitsky is a two-time All-Big 12 selection while at Kansas and earlier this month he was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List for the fourth consecutive season.

Puni made an immediate impact at Kansas last season, starting all 13 games at left guard as the Jayhawks advanced to a bowl game for the first time since 2008. He received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2022 and has been named a Preseason All-Big 12 selection by both Phil Steele and Athlon Sports.

Young is in his second season as a Jayhawk after starting 12-of-13 games at linebacker in 2022. He was third on the team in tackles (60) and tackles for loss (5.5) last season, while ranking second with 4.5 sacks. Heading into the 2023 season, Young received Preseason All-Big 12 selections from Phil Steele and Athlon Sports.

Kansas has had 41 players compete in the Reese’s Senior Bowl all-time, including participants in each of the past two seasons. WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State women's golf head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/coaches/tom-mccurdy/1176">Tom McCurdy</a>&nbsp;and the women's golf staff have announced their 2023-24 schedule.&nbsp; The Shockers tee off on the new season in Springfield, Missouri on September 11th&nbsp;where they will compete in the Payne Stewart Invitational. It will be the third straight year that the Shockers play their season opener in Springfield.&nbsp; Two weeks later, the Shockers will make their longest trip of the season, a jaunt up to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to compete in the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational that runs from September 24th&nbsp;to September 26th. In their next tournament. the Shockers will look to defend their Big O Classic crown when they make the trip to&nbsp;Omaha, Nebraska to compete in the 2023&nbsp;Big O Classic which plays from October 2nd to October 3rd. The women's golf team defeated host-school Creighton by two strokes to win the tournament last season. The team rounds out fall season action with a trip to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, to battle in the Little Rock Golf Classic. The spring season for the Shockers begins on February 23rd&nbsp;down in Rio Verde, Arizona at the Rio Verde Invitational. In the spring, the Shockers will also compete in the Tulane Classic (March 10th-12th), the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona (March 16th-17th), and round out the regular season at the Oral Roberts Spring Invitational which runs April 8th-9th.&nbsp; The American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Tournament is once again being hosted by Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida. LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas soccer super-senior Melania Pasar has been named Goalkeeper of the Week by TopDrawerSoccer and the Big 12 Conference. This is the first time the Portoroz, Slovenia, native has earned the national award in her career and her second time winning the conference honor.

In the first match of the 2023 season on Aug. 17, Pasar recorded her fifth career shutout at Wisconsin, a team that returned 10 starters and finished third in the Big Ten in 2022. Pasar made a career-high nine saves in the match, with one of those on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute to preserve a scoreless game.

In the 4-1 win at Loyola Chicago on Aug. 20, Pasar recorded three saves in leading KU to a 1-0-1 record in its first road trip of the season.

Pasar leads the Big 12 in saves through the first two games with 12. She is second in the league in save percentage (.923) and tied for second in goals against average (0.50).

A two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, Pasar was also named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Aug. 30, 2022.

Pasar is the first Kansas goalkeeper to win TopDrawerSoccer Goalkeeper of the Week since Sarah Peters on Nov. 12, 2019. She also joins Peters in winning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week on multiple occasions.

Brown shared the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor with BYU's Kendell Petersen.&nbsp;

In addition to earning the Big 12 co-Defensive Player of the Week citation, Brown was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week and the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the first time in her career. She is the first Wildcat to earn all three weekly honors in the same week. Brown is the third Wildcat to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining goalkeeper Miranda Larkin (October, 2017) and defender&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/shae-turner/8496">Shae Turner</a>&nbsp;(November, 2020). The product of Gilbert, Arizona, helped the Wildcats secure an unbeaten opening weekend for the first time since 2018, including the program's first road point against a ranked opponent. She was the second Wildcat and first K-State defender to score two or more goals in a season-opener. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has been selected to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Watch List, awarded to the top senior or upperclassmen quarterback set to graduate with their class. The Watch List recognition is Daniels’ sixth of the preseason.

Daniels is one of 48 of the nation’s leading quarterbacks on the list, which includes players from all 10 FBS conferences as well as a football independent. The preseason watch list is selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. This year’s watch list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2023 football season.

The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.

The Golden Arm Award is the sixth preseason watch list to recognize Daniels, who was also named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Daniels appears on watch lists for the Manning Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the Maxwell Award and the Wuerffel Trophy.

Howard is one of 48 quarterbacks in the nation to be named to the initial watch list, and it is the ninth time a Wildcat has been up for the award. Most notably, current K-State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/collin-klein/1979">Collin Klein</a>&nbsp;was the 2012 recipient, while Chad May and Michael Bishop were finalists in 1994 and 1998, respectively. CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox have fired executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, cutting ties with their leadership on the baseball side amid another disappointing season. Williams was in his 11th season in his position after serving as the club’s general manager for 12 seasons. He was one of baseball's most prominent Black executives. Hahn had been the GM since October 2012. The White Sox are finishing a miserable season. They have dropped eight of 10 to fall to 49-77 on the season. Chicago made the playoffs in 2020 and 2021, and then went 81-81 last year.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona has had serious talks with the organization about his future, hinting that this could be his final season. The winningest manager in club history, the 64-year-old Francona, who has dealt with major health issues in recent years, did not announce his retirement and said any of those decisions will be addressed later. Francona is in his 11th season with Cleveland. He led the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles before joining the Guardians in 2013. The Guardians have made the playoffs six times and had only one losing season with Francona. This has been an especially challenging season for the defending AL Central champions because of injuries.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos signed wide receiver Josh Hammond on Tuesday after placing wide receiver Jalen Virgil on injured reserve. Virgil tore the meniscus in his right knee while trying to score at the end of a 50-yard catch-and-run just before halftime of the Broncos’ preseason game against San Francisco on Saturday night. His ACL wasn’t damaged but he’ll need surgery. Hammond is a second-year pro from the University of Florida who entered the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020 and played in two games for them in 2021. He was on the DC Defenders for the 2023 XFL season, catching 34 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown.

(AP) — Saints coach Dennis Allen says he expects tight end Jimmy Graham to return this week to practice following what team officials have described as a “medical episode” that led police in the Los Angeles area to arrest the veteran player and take him to a hospital. Saints team physician Dr. John Amoss has said Graham likely had a seizure and was disoriented when he was picked up by authorities in Orange County on Friday night. The Saints were in California last week for joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers in advance of New Orleans’ 22-17 victory in both teams’ second preseason game on Sunday night. Graham did not play in the game.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Shea Langeliers homered for the second consecutive day, and the Oakland Athletics spoiled the return of former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Aledmys Díaz added three RBIs for the A’s, and Brent Rooker had two hits a day after hitting his second game-ending home run of the season.

The game between the two worst teams in baseball attracted a crowd of 4,021, with chants of “Sell the team” echoing throughout a mostly quiet Coliseum during much of the evening.

Langeliers drew a louder response from the crowd with his home run. The veteran catcher has quickly become a fan favorite in Oakland after being acquired from the Braves in March 2022 in exchange for slugger Matt Olson, who is tied with two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani for the majors lead with 43 home runs.

“We all know the power and the hit tool’s there,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “This isn’t easy at this level to come up here and have immediate success. We saw it with Sean Murphy in his first full season, and I think we’re seeing it with Shea as well. He’s really showing progress of working in the right direction.”

Greinke had been out for two weeks with a right elbow injury before being activated off the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game. A six-time All-Star who has 224 career wins and won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award, followed opener Angel Zerpa (1-2) and pitched out of the bullpen for the first time since doing so for the Houston Astros against the Chicago White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Oct. 10, 2021.

The 39-year-old Greinke looked sharp while throwing 53 pitches and allowing two hits in four scoreless innings. He had five strikeouts and allowed one runner past first base.

“He looked like he was back to his normal form,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Got a bunch of swing and misses, soft contact. It was a really positive outing for him. It’s great to have him back.”

The last-place A’s have won two straight against the Royals and four of five overall this season, one of the few teams Oakland has been able to handle this season.

Hogan Harris (3-6) got the win despite an erratic outing when he allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings. Trevor May worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Langelier’s home run leading off the second off Zerpa traveled 412 feet. All but two of the slugger’s 14 home runs have gone at least 400 feet.

“This year when I have hit them it seems like I’ve connected pretty good,” Langeliers said. “But it kind of feels like they’re few and far between. If I keep building this momentum and keep it going, it’d be nice.”

Harris is partners with Langeliers in a fantasy football league and said he always tries to stop and watch when his friend is batting.

“I gotta watch my boy,” Harris said. “I can’t not watch him, or he’ll yell at me. Him and I, since the very first time we met each other, we just kind of clicked well.”

Díaz made it 5-2 with a two-run double just inside the third base line. The ball rolled into foul territory past the A’s bullpen then bounced off the wall back onto the field.

Salvador Perez had a two-run single off Harris in the fifth, pulling the Royals within 5-4.

Zerpa struggled with his control early and hit the first batter in the first then walked the second. After Carlos Perez flew out, Rooker lined an RBI single into left-center. Zack Gelof scored on a sacrifice fly by Díaz, easily beating the off-target throw by Royals right fielder Drew Waters.

The Royals tied it on Kyle Isbel’s two-out, bases-loaded single in the second off Harris, who pitched in relief of opener Dany Jiménez.

Royals second baseman Michael Massey&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsKC/status/1694196167574167947">made a tremendous defensive play</a>&nbsp;to rob Ryan Noda of a hit in the seventh inning. Massey fielded Noda’s sharp grounder up the middle with his glove hand then flipped the ball to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. who relayed to first for the 4-6-3 out as Noda stumbled over the bag.

Royals: RHP Dylan Coleman was optioned to Triple-A Omaha to make room for Greinke.

Athletics: RHP Tayler Scott was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, clearing room on the roster for Harris.

Little Rock, AR - Wind Surge starting pitcher Travis Adams was electric to start the game. He gave up no hits and struck out five batters through three, but Surge bats did not provide him the support he needed. They struggled to put a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning and could not take advantage of the situation once they got there. The Travelers defeated the Wind Surge 5-0 in the road series opener.

Arkansas was able to get their first hits and run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Spencer Packard hit a leadoff single that ended the potential no-hitter. He was followed by Isiah Gilliam with his own single and then Alberto Rodriguez hit a line drive to left field for an RBI single. The Travelers ended the inning with a one run lead off three hits.

The Travelers added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Morgan grounded out, but he hit the ball sharply enough up the middle to drive in Robert Perez Jr. from third.

The Wind Surge were the closest they had been all ball game to getting on the board in the top of the seventh. For the first time in the game, they were able to get runners in scoring position. Two walks and a Dalton Shuffield single loaded the bases, but the Surge could not capitalize on the opportunity.

In the bottom of the eighth the Travelers put some insurance runs on the board. Perez Jr. hit a single on a ground ball to right field that was mishandled by Yoyner Fajardo which allowed two more runs to score on the error. Morgan then hit an RBI single on a ground ball to center field.

Travis Adams made his team leading 21st start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched four and a third innings and gave up only one run off four hits. He struck out five batters and walked two more. He was credited with the loss and his record falls to (3-9).

Arkansas starter Shawn Semple pitched six and a third scoreless innings, allowed five hits, struck out four batters and walked two more and earned the win with his performance.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to (24-22, 52-62) and the Arkansas Travelers improve to (19-26, 64-50).

NOTES: Seth Gray extended his hitting streak to nine games. Wichita activated David Festa from the temporary inactive roster. They also promoted Francis Peguero to Triple-A St. Paul. Patrick Winkel’s on base streak ended at 18 games today and David Banuelos ended at 20 games.
