OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The College Baseball Hall of Fame has never had a permanent home, until now. 

The College Baseball Foundation announced on Tuesday that the College Baseball Hall of Fame will have its first-ever physical location in the Museum at Prairiefire, located in Overland Park. The museum is set to open in 2025.

The foundation started in Lubbock, Texas to preserve, elevate and advance the game.

“We are honored to serve as the storytellers and caretakers of college baseball history,” said Craig Ramsey, Chair of the College Baseball Foundation Board chair Craig Ramsey in a release. “The sport is our national pastime, and we can’t wait to bring the stories of the college game to life in Overland Park. The stories of thousands who have had the privilege to be part of the game and the impact they have had on their teams, their schools, their families, and their communities will be a tremendous draw. Prairiefire is the perfect home for visitors and fans to experience the game’s greatest legacies.”

Visit Overland Park's Warren Wilkinson said that he expects to see around 150,000 visitors in the first year when the museum opens.&nbsp;

The College Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 2004.

Prairiefire and Visit Overland Park will host the College Baseball Foundation’s Night of Champions, the annual recognition of college baseball’s top athletes, on Feb. 15, at The Marriott Overland Park.

NEW YORK (AP) — Todd Helton thought back to when he was a kid being coached by his father, Jerry, a minor league catcher in the 1960s.

“When I would go 1 for 3 — and it’s a bad day when you’re young — he’d say 1 for 3 gets you into the Hall of Fame,” Helton said.

He got 293 votes (76.1%), four more than the 75% needed, after batting .306 with 143 homers and 906 RBIs in 15 years, all with his hometown Minnesota Twins.

Beltré, Mauer and Helton will be inducted on July 21 along with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jim-leyland-hall-of-fame-6fbba1daf50370931874cb3c5ef3c0e2" target="_blank">Jim Leyland, elected last month by the contemporary era committee for managers, executives and umpires</a>. There are 273 players among 346 people in the Hall, and just 60 of those players were elected on the first try.

Beltré becomes the fifth Dominican-born Hall of Famer after Juan Marichal, Pedro Martínez, Vladimir Guerrero and David Ortiz.

“I’m proud of the fact that I was able to play for a long time and be able to compete at the highest level,” Beltré said. “I’m honored to be in the Hall of Fame. It’s something that I never even dreamed of.”

Reliever Billy Wagner was five votes short at 284 (73.8%) but up from 68.1% last year. He will appear on the ballot for the 10th and final time in 2025, when Ichiro Suzuki and CC Sabathia are newly eligible.

Gary Sheffield got 246 votes for 63.9% in his final appearance on the BBWAA ballot, up from 55% last year and 11.7% in 2015. He is eligible for consideration by the contemporary baseball player committee, which next meets in December 2025.

Beltré, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004), Seattle (2005-09), Boston (2010) and Texas (2011-18). His 2,759 games at third base are second to Brooks Robinson’s 2,870 and his 636 doubles are 11th.

Helton, a five-time All-Star first baseman and the 2000 major league batting champion, hit .345 with 200 homers and 791 RBIs at home and .287 with 142 homers and 547 RBIs on the road.

“Pitchers get hurt — they say you can’t throw in thin air. And then hitters get dinked because they play Colorado,” Helton said. “I’m not embarrassed or anything about my home and road numbers. Going on the road after hitting in Colorado is hard. The ball breaks more and it’s a huge adjustment going through the season.”

Mauer was a six-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner and the 2009 AL MVP. An All-Star in six of his first 10 big league seasons and the only catcher to win three batting titles, Mauer moved to first base for his last five years following a concussion on a foul tip off the bat of the New York Mets’ Ike Davis on Aug. 19, 2013, an injury that ended Mauer’s season. Concussion symptoms returned on May 11, 2018, when he had whiplash while diving for a foul ball at Anaheim. He tried to play through it for a week but missed 25 games and retired after the season.

“I feel effects of some of those things like that,” he said.

Voters included an average of seven names per ballot, up from 5.86 last year, and 24.4% of the voters checked the maximum 10 candidates, an increase from 13.9%. Just 10 eligible voters failed to return ballots.

Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramírez again lagged, hurt by suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez received 34.8% and Ramírez 32.5%.

Among other first-time candidates, Chase Utley (28.8%) and David Wright (6.2%) will remain on next year’s ballot.

José Bautista, Bartolo Colon, Adrián González, Matt Holliday, Victor Martinez, Brandon Phillips, José Reyes and James Shields all were under 5% and will be dropped.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders announced Tuesday they hired Tom Telesco as their next general manager and passed over interim Champ Kelly for the position. Kelly could remain as the assistant general manager. That's the position he held under Dave Ziegler, who was fired Oct. 31. Kelly then was given the interim title and was believed to be a strong candidate to get the job full time. Telesco comes from the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers, where he was the general manager since 2013.

Bucks fire coach Adrian Griffin after 43 games despite having one of NBA's top records

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks have fired coach Adrian Griffin after just 43 games despite having one of the league's top records midway through his first season. Milwaukee is 30-13 to tie the Minnesota Timberwolves for the league's second-best record. The Bucks are 3 1/2 games behind the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference. But the dip in Milwaukee's defensive performance had raised concerns about the Bucks' viability as a championship contender. Milwaukee had given Griffin his first head coaching job this summer after firing Mike Budenholzer. Joe Prunty, who had been an assistant coach on Griffin's staff, will serve as the Bucks' interim head coach.

There are few surprises in USA Basketball's men's player pool for the Paris Olympics that was announced Tuesday, with most of the big names like LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant on the list. The surprise may have been who was missing. Draymond Green wasn't among the 41 names released by USA Basketball as candidates for the team that will compete in Paris this summer in search of a fifth consecutive gold medal. Green helped the U.S. win gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and then another title at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The Timberwolves lost 128-125 to the Hornets despite a franchise-record 62 points by Karl-Anthony Towns. The Last Two Minute Report is issued by the league for games at or within three-point margins in the final 2 minutes of fourth quarters and overtimes. This report revealed that six mistakes benefited the Hornets and three of them went for the Wolves. One was simply a foul called on the wrong Charlotte player.

Heat trade 6-time All-Star Kyle Lowry and a draft pick to the Hornets for Terry Rozier

MIAMI (AP) — Kyle Lowry has been traded by the Miami Heat to the Charlotte Hornets for Terry Rozier in a swap of guards. The Heat also are sending a 2027 first-round draft pick to the Hornets to complete the deal. Rozier figures to be an immediate upgrade for the Heat. He is averaging 23.2 points and 6.6 assists — both career bests — in 30 games this season, and is shooting a career-high 46% as well. Lowry is a six-time All-Star and won an NBA title with Toronto in 2019.

Oilers beat Blue Jackets 4-1 for 14th straight victory, close within 3 wins of the NHL record

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Warren Foegele and Evander Kane each had a goal and an assist and the Edmonton Oilers extended their winning streak to 14 games with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Connor McDavid and Dylan Holloway also scored for the Oilers (27-15-1), who became the seventh team in NHL history to win 14 in a row. Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner made 27 saves and won his 11th straight game, passing Grant Fuhr for the longest single-season winning streak in Oilers history. Dmitri Voronkov scored for the Blue Jackets (14-23-9), who have lost five of their last six games. Elvis Merzlikins finished with 20 saves.

The Chiefs' winning formula is to surround their immense star power with draft steals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have become known for big-name stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. They are some of the best players in the NFL and have helped the Chiefs reach their sixth straight AFC title game. But the Chiefs wouldn't be heading to Baltimore on Sunday for a shot at their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years if not for all of their draft steals over the years. That includes players like Chamarri Conner, who played a crucial role in beating Buffalo in last weekend's divisional round, and leading rusher Isiah Pacheco, a former seventh-round pick.

Rhys Hoskins and Brewers agree to a $34 million, 2-year contract, AP source says

Rhys Hoskins and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a $34 million, two-year contract, filling the team's opening at first base. A person familiar with the move confirmed it to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. Milwaukee won the NL Central last year with a 92-70 record before getting eliminated by Arizona in their Wild Card Series. The addition of Hoskins gives the Brewers another power bat for the middle of their lineup. They had Rowdy Tellez and Carlos Santana at first base in 2023, but they let go of Tellez after the season and he signed with Pittsburgh in December. Santana remains a free agent.

49ers look to get over the NFC title game hurdle after losing the past 2 years

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The most taxing part of getting to the precipice of the Super Bowl only to fall short might be the long journey just to return to that stage for another shot. Offseason workouts, followed by training camp, a 17-game season and then the early rounds of the playoffs. The San Francisco 49ers once again got through all that and earned another chance at winning the NFC championship game after losing in frustrating fashion the previous two seasons. The 49ers get another opportunity on Sunday when they host the Detroit Lions for a spot in the Super Bowl.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch High senior guard Tai Clark turned in a career night with 20 points, including 13 in the second half, as the Salthawks overcame a five-point deficit in the first quarter to beat Derby 64-51 at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday night.

A smothering defensive effort by Hutchinson was the key to the win. Great execution on offense led to the Salthawks holding Derby to just five points in the second quarter.

Besides Clark's 20 points, Hutch High senior guard Terrell King scored 11, Jay Lewis 9, Daylee VanSyckle 7, Devon Spiller added 6, Jax Heneha 5, Julian Smith 4 and Taishaun Govain 2.

Derby was led by senior guard Mason Anderson with 27 to lead all scorers, including four three-pointers from long range. Kaden Franklin had 8, Jack Ulwelling 8, Avant Riley 5, Kohen Kotas 2 and Brayden Smith 1.

Hutchinson (9-2) will host Maize (6-5) on Friday night at the SAC at 7:15 p.m. for a postponed game from last week's snow storm.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team closes a three-game homestand and opens the second trip to through the Jayhawk Conference on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The No. 19-ranked Blue Dragons (15-3, 10-2 Jayhawk) entertains the Dodge City Conquistadors (7-11, 5-7 Jayhawk) at 7:30 p.m. in the second meeting of the season.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s first trip through the Jayhawk saw it win 10 of 12 games. The Blue Dragons sit in third place in the KJCCC, just one game behind No. 3 Barton and No. 12 Cowley, the only two teams to defeat the Dragons in conference play this season.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons averaged 85.8 points offensively in the first half of league play and allowed a solid 74.0 points per game. &nbsp;

The Dragons had a tremendous response to last Wednesday’s 22-point loss to now-No. 3 Barton with a resounding 85-64 victory over Garden City on Saturday at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons shot 47.7 percent and hit nine 3-pointers, building a 47-30 lead at halftime. Kamryn Thomas popped four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points. Dallas Whitney, Kernan Bundy and Kobe Smith combined for 39 of Hutchinson’s 45 points off the bench. The Dragons limited a hot-shooting Garden City team to 35.6 percent overall, only 6 of 26 from 3-point range.&nbsp;

Dodge City has had a full week off since last playing. The Conquistadors dropped their third straight game after a 109-72 loss to Garden City last Wednesday.&nbsp;

Avnoor Bhullar had 15 points to lead five Conquistadors in double figures against Garden City. The Busters stung Dodge City hitting 16 of 27 from 3-point range.&nbsp;

Thomas nailed a career-high five 3-pointers in the Blue Dragons’ 89-73 victory over Dodge City on November 18 at the DC3 Student Event Center. Thomas has 23 points to lead four Blue Dragons in double figures. Valentino Simon had 18 points, J.P. Ricks had 16 points and Zoe Holman had 12 points. Chevalier Emery had 20 points to pace the Conquistadors.&nbsp;

Wednesday’s meeting will be the 193rd between Hutchinson and Dodge City in a series that has been continuous since 1935. The Blue Dragons own a 125-68 all-time series record over the Conquistadors, going 59-28 against Dodge City all-time in Hutchinson and 50-23 at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team opens the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition with a nationally ranked battle against the Dodge City Conquistadors.&nbsp;

The No. 4-ranked Blue Dragons (18-0, 12-0 KJCCC) will meet No. 12 Dodge City (16-2, 10-2) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:15 p.m.&nbsp;

This will be Hutchinson’s third matchup against a nationally ranked opponent this season. The Blue Dragons defeated No. 11 Dodge City 72-70 on November 18 in Dodge City and No. 3 Butler 83-54 on January 3 in El Dorado.&nbsp;

As the second half of the KJCCC season begins, the Blue Dragons lead second-place Dodge City by two games, Butler by three games and Barton by four games.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s 18-0 start was in serious jeopardy on November 18 at Dodge City. The Blue Dragons trailed by 10 points with 3:20 to play in the fourth quarter at the DC3 Student Events Center. Journey Armstead hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play to give the Dragons the lead and Hutchinson rallied to win 72-70.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday following an 85-64 victory over Garden City at the Sports Arena. Leading by one point at halftime, the Blue Dragons outscored the Busters 31-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Monae Duffy had 17 points and Kiki Smith had 16 to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

Dodge City had a full week to rest in preparation for Wednesday. The Conquistadors defeated Garden City 85-77 last Wednesday. Six players scored in double figures led by Paris Santacatarina with 17 points. Shornia Preston had 16 points.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will have to defend the No. 1 3-point shooting team in the Jayhawk Conference in Dodge City. The Conquistadors shoot 38.5 percent from distance, which is No. 5 in the nation, averaging 11.1 made 3’s per game. Earlier this season against Coffeyville, Dodge City blistered the Red Ravens with 23 3-pointers in 35 attempts.&nbsp;

Wednesday’s game will be the 106th in series history between Hutchinson and Dodge City.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons trailed by 10 points with 3:20 to play in the fourth quarter at the DC3 Student Events Center. Journey Armstead hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play to give the Dragons the lead and Hutchinson rallied to win 72-70.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday following an 85-64 victory over Garden City at the Sports Arena. Leading by one point at halftime, the Blue Dragons outscored the Busters 31-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Monae Duffy had 17 points and Kiki Smith had 16 to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;Dodge City had a full week to rest in preparation for Wednesday. The Conquistadors defeated Garden City 85-77 last Wednesday. Six players scored in double figures led by Paris Santacatarina with 17 points. Shornia Preston had 16 points.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons will have to defend the No. 1 3-point shooting team in the Jayhawk Conference in Dodge City. The Conquistadors shoot 38.5 percent from distance, which is No. 5 in the nation, averaging 11.1 made 3’s per game. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas’ Mason Fairchild was named Second Team Academic All-America® as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. The team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Fairchild, from Andale, Kansas, earns his first CSC Academic All-America honor with a 3.92 cumulative GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Fairchild becomes the 14th Jayhawk in program history to earn the Academic All-America distinction, including the fourth in the past two seasons.

Fairchild recently finished his senior season with the Jayhawks, earning All-Big 12 recognition for the second-straight season. In 2023, Fairchild had 27 receptions for 451 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 16.7 yards per reception. Fairchild finishes his KU career ranked fourth in school history for receptions by a tight end with 82 for 1,111 yards and 10 touchdowns.&nbsp;

Off the field, Fairchild was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and was a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Throughout his career, Fairchild was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team three times (2020-22) and was named to the Academic All-Rookie team as a freshman in 2019.

To qualify for the Academic All-America teams, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50, be at least a sophomore athletically and academically with a year in residence at the school and appear in 90 percent of all contests. Upon being named Academic All-District, individuals are placed on the All-America ballot.

Both players were named to the first team, and both were honored for the first time in their careers. It marked the first time since the 2018 season that K-State had two players earn Academic All-America status in the same season and just the sixth time in program history.

Beebe's designation comes on the heels of being a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, which is often referred to as the "Academic Heisman." Additionally, he is one of four players in the nation to be named a Consensus All-American and an Academic All-American this season and the first to do so in K-State history.

Beebe, who holds a 3.83 GPA in social studies education/curriculum and instruction, was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, semifinalist for the Lombardi Award and was the 2023 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. A product of Kansas City, Kansas, Beebe finished his K-State career by playing in 51 games with 48 starts, including starts in each of his final 45 contests.

Sinnott, a junior who declared for the NFL Draft, is a marketing major who has posted a 3.81 GPA. The Waterloo, Iowa, native was a 2023 Honorable Mention All-American by Phil Steele in addition to earning All-Big 12 First Team honors each of the last two seasons. He finished his career tying for the most receiving touchdowns by a tight end (10), ranking third among the position in receptions (82) and fourth in receiving yards (1,138).

In 2023, Sinnott, a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, recorded the most single-season receptions (49), receiving yards (676) and receiving touchdowns (6) by a tight end in school history, marks that each ranked in the top five nationally among the position group.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid scored a franchise-record 70 points, the most in the NBA this season, to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 133-123 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night. Embiid also set a career high with 18 rebounds. He was 24 of 41 from the field, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, and made 21 of 23 free throws. He broke Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain's 76ers record of 68 points, set on Dec. 16, 1967, with a layup with 1:41 to play. Chamberlain was playing for the Philadelphia Warriors when he set the NBA record with 100 points.

Titans agree to hire Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as head coach, AP source says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have agreed to hire Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their head coach. That's according to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been finalized. Callahan replaces Mike Vrabel, who was fired on Jan. 9 after six seasons. The 39-year-old Callahan had a virtual interview with Tennessee on Jan. 12, the first of 10 candidates to speak to the team. The Titans interviewed Callahan in person on Monday and decided to hire him. Callahan has been the Bengals' offensive coordinator since 2019.

The visual of one of the nation's most popular athletes knocked to the floor after a fan who was staring at her phone collided with her while storming the court was a stark reminder of the dangers athletes face when crowds get out of control. Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark was shaken up but not injured in the collision, which occurred Sunday as she headed toward the locker room with teammates following a 100-92 loss to then-No. 18 Ohio State in Columbus. It was the second time in less than two weeks that fans have stormed the court at the end of a Big Ten game.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens are trying to reach their first Super Bowl in 11 years. The last team standing in the way is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will be in town Sunday for the AFC championship game. That means a showdown with Patrick Mahomes and a stout Kansas City defense. And yes, the Ravens will have to contend with Travis Kelce — the tight end whose romance with Taylor Swift has brought the pop superstar to NFL games around the country this season. Baltimore beat Houston 34-10 on Saturday.

UConn, Purdue remain atop jumbled AP Top 25; No. 25 New Mexico moves into rankings

The AP Top 25 had another week of upheaval, with teams bouncing around like kernels in a popcorn maker. The same two teams remain at the top amid the poll turmoil. Reigning national champion Connecticut stayed No. 1 in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll, receiving 44 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel. No. 2 Purdue had 17 first-place votes. A loss by Kansas jumbled the rest of the top five. No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Tennessee all moved up a spot by sweeping two games each last week. No. 25 New Mexico moved into the rankings for the first time this season after a pair of wins.

US Open champion Coco Gauff is into the Australian Open semifinals after beating Kostyuk

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff is into the semifinals of the Australian Open after beating Marta Kostyuk 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3) , 6-2 in an error-strewn match at Melbourne Park. The American saved two set points as she came from 5-1 down to win the opener but needed a deciding set to claim victory after three hours, eight minutes. She will play either defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or Barbora Krejcikova in the semifinals on Thursday. Men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic is in action later, taking on Taylor Fritz for a place in the semifinals.

Kansas State jumps to 4th in women's AP Top 25; South Carolina is still No. 1

Kansas State has its best ranking in 21 years after the Wildcats moved up to fourth in The Associated Press women's basketball poll. The Wildcats, who climbed three spots, were last ranked this high in 2003. South Carolina remains the unanimous choice at No. 1 in the poll, receiving all 35 votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks cruised to easy wins over Kentucky and Texas A&amp;M. There was some shifting in the top 10, with UCLA moving back up to No. 2 after beating Colorado on the road. The Buffaloes remained in the third spot. Iowa dropped to fifth after falling in overtime to Ohio State.

Lions agree to sign 3-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, AP source says

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a deal with three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz. That's according to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't announced the signing. Ertz caught the go-ahead touchdown in Philadelphia's Super Bowl win over New England six years ago. He also set a record for catches by a tight end in a season with 116 in 2018. The Lions were lacking depth at tight end behind Sam LaPorta after injuries to Brock Wright and James Mitchell.

Nick Dunlap withdraws from Torrey Pines after becoming 1st amateur in 33 years to win on PGA Tour

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Dunlap is the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour. Now he has to decide whether to turn pro. Dunlap already was scheduled to play the next PGA Tour stop at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. But he chose to withdraw. He says in a statement he's going home to Alabama after what he describes as a life changing 24 hours. To turn pro means Dunlap is eligible for every major but the British Open and seven $20 million events. If he stays amateur, he gets in every major but the PGA Championship.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Johnny Furphy sent his parents back home to Australia with quite the lasting impression of their son in Allen Fieldhouse.

The freshman guard had career-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, hitting a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and helped No. 7 Kansas overcome a sluggish night from the rest of its starters in a 74-69 victory over Cincinnati on Monday night.

Kevin McCullar Jr. added 20 points despite struggling with his shot, KJ Adams Jr. had 11 points and Hunter Dickinson overcame some foul trouble to score 10 for the Jayhawks (16-3, 4-2), who bounced back nicely from a road loss at West Virginia.

“This was their first home game,” Furphy said of his parents, “so I was happy they could experience that. I've been telling them a lot about Allen Fieldhouse. I'm happy they got to see a win.”

The cold-shooting Bearcats (13-6, 2-4), wrapping up a stretch of six straight against ranked teams, got within 64-57 when Day Day Thomas ended their 6-plus minute field-goal drought with just over 2 1/2 minutes to play. But at the other end, Furphy hit his 3-pointer from the wing as the shot clock expired, and the Jayhawks were able to hang on from there.

“You had some good looks, some blown possessions, and you're still right there. That's the hard part to swallow,” said Cincinnati coach Will Wade, whose team had 16 turnovers and went 3 for 18 from the 3-point arc.

Dan Skillings Jr. led the Bearcats with 16 points. Leading scorer Viktor Lakhin was held to seven on 1-for-6 shooting.

The Bearcats and Jayhawks were meeting for the first time since a top-five showdown in 1996, and they were playing at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since 1967, when Kansas exacted a bit of revenge for a home loss five years earlier.

Like so many teams unaccustomed to the Phog, Cincinnati was rattled in the opening minutes. Kansas sprinted out to a 12-point lead and Wade was forced to call timeout to keep the game from getting away from his Bearcats.

Cincinnati slowly drew even, though, and briefly took the lead before going to halftime 35-all.

“We have a resilient bunch,” Wade said. “We don't pout. We don't put our heads down.”

McCullar continued to struggle from the field, where he finished 5 for 17, and Dickinson had to sit long stretches after picking up his fourth foul with more than 10 minutes to go. But the Bearcats continued to be bitterly cold from the 3-point arc, where Simas Lukosius was 0 for 6 and nobody else was a whole lot better, and that prevented them from ever taking control.

That came back to haunt Cincinnati when the Jayhawks pulled away in the closing minutes.

“They got a goose egg other than Skillings shooting the ball from the arc, and those were all in the first half,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We were probably lucky on some of them, but we did a decent job defensively, and that was a big part of the game.”

Kansas retired the No. 33 jersey of Bill “Skinny” Johnson during a halftime ceremony. He was an All-American in 1933 under coach Phog Allen, and led the Jayhawks to three consecutive conference titles. Johnson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977, three years before his death.

Kansas visits No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday.

For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College softball team start a season as a nationally ranked team.&nbsp;

Coming off a Jayhawk Conference championship and Region VI runner-up season that netted a school-record 44 wins, the 2024 Blue Dragons open the season ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings, which were released on Monday.&nbsp;

Hutchinson started last season off as the No. 17 team, which broke a 35-year drought of being ranked in the preseason poll. Hutchinson has now been ranked in 15 consecutive national polls dating back to April 18, 2022. That’s the longest consecutive run in the national rankings since being ranked in 14-straight polls in 2018.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons return 11 total players from last year’s KJCCC championship team that went 44-8. &nbsp;

Among the returnees are all-Jayhawk second-team performers Olivia Sandoval and Jaleigh Darnell and honorable mention selections Korri Lies and Alexis Mastin.&nbsp;

Only two Jayhawk Conference teams are represented in the preseason rankings. Defending Region VI Champion Butler is No. 14 to start the season.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s season opener is scheduled for Saturday against the Ottawa University JV at Fun Valley. A decision will be made on the status of that game because of field conditions will be made later in the week.&nbsp;

 </figure>For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College softball team start a season as a nationally ranked team.&nbsp;Coming off a Jayhawk Conference championship and Region VI runner-up season that netted a school-record 44 wins, the 2024 Blue Dragons open the season ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings, which were released on Monday.&nbsp;Hutchinson started last season off as the No. 17 team, which broke a 35-year drought of being ranked in the preseason poll. Hutchinson has now been ranked in 15 consecutive national polls dating back to April 18, 2022. That’s the longest consecutive run in the national rankings since being ranked in 14-straight polls in 2018.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons return 11 total players from last year’s KJCCC championship team that went 44-8. &nbsp;Among the returnees are all-Jayhawk second-team performers Olivia Sandoval and Jaleigh Darnell and honorable mention selections Korri Lies and Alexis Mastin.&nbsp;Only two Jayhawk Conference teams are represented in the preseason rankings. Defending Region VI Champion Butler is No. 14 to start the season.&nbsp;Hutchinson’s season opener is scheduled for Saturday against the Ottawa University JV at Fun Valley. 🥎 Blue Dragons ranked No. 17 in NJCAA preseason poll

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team’s 1-1 week last week saw it drop five spots in the latest NJCAA Division I National Rankings, which were released on Monday. &nbsp;

The Blue Dragons fell five spots to No. 19 after a 102-80 loss to now No. 3 Barton and an 85-64 victory over Garden City last week.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls dating back to the first regular-season poll in November. The Blue Dragons are 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.&nbsp;

Now 15-3 overall, the Blue Dragons are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Hutchinson has just one game this week and it will wrap up a three-game homestand as the Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Former No. 2 Daytona state and No. 3 Vincennes both suffered losses last week to reshape the Top 5. South Plains remained No. 1 with Mineral Area now at No. 2, Barton at No. 3, Chipola at No. 4 and Daytona State at No. 5.&nbsp;

Cowley remained No. 12 this week. Butler dropped two spots to No. 21.&nbsp;

 </figure>Courtesy of HutchCC AthleticsThe Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team’s 1-1 week last week saw it drop five spots in the latest NJCAA Division I National Rankings, which were released on Monday. &nbsp;The Blue Dragons fell five spots to No. 19 after a 102-80 loss to now No. 3 Barton and an 85-64 victory over Garden City last week.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls dating back to the first regular-season poll in November. The Blue Dragons are 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.&nbsp;Now 15-3 overall, the Blue Dragons are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Hutchinson has just one game this week and it will wrap up a three-game homestand as the Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;Former No. 2 Daytona state and No. 3 Vincennes both suffered losses last week to reshape the Top 5. South Plains remained No. 1 with Mineral Area now at No. 2, Barton at No. 3, Chipola at No. 4 and Daytona State at No. 5.&nbsp;Cowley remained No. 12 this week. The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team climbed in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings for a third-straight week, moving up to No. 4 in the latest rankings released on Monday.&nbsp;

 </figure>Courtesy of HutchCC AthleticsThe Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team climbed in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings for a third-straight week, moving up to No. 4 in the latest rankings released on Monday.&nbsp;Now 18-0 after victories over Barton and Garden City last week, the Blue Dragons match their highest national ranking since Nov. 18, 2022.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons have just one game this week, but it will be a Top 15 matchup as No. 12 Dodge City comes to the Sports Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to open the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons moved up to No. 4 after previous-No. 2 Collin lost 71-69 in overtime to No. 4 McLennan on Saturday in Waco, Texas.&nbsp;The Top 5 now has Northwest Florida State, Gulf Coast State, McLennan, Hutchinson and Collin.&nbsp;Dodge City (16-2, 10-2) has won five games in a row entering Wednesday’s game at the Sports Arena and moved up one spot. Butler went 1-1 last week, getting upset by Cowley in Arkansas City on Sunday, dropped to No. 18.
