McPHERSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Salthawk boys saw up close why the McPherson Bullpups have won the McPherson Invitational championship for the 25th time in its 60-year history, as Hutchinson was stormed over by the ‘Pups, 78-42 at the Roundhouse on Saturday. It was the 12th championship for head coach Kurt Kinnamon.

The Bullpups came out of the gate swinging from the start jumping on the Salthawks early with a barrage of 3-point baskets to take a 25-6 first quarter lead.

By the time the dust settled in the old historic roundhouse, McPherson had built a 51 to 14 lead at half-time and the 60th MIT Championship game result had been decided. McPherson had not won this tournament since 2019 and the Bullpups were hungry for a win.

Hutchinson fought back in the 3rd quarter to outscore the Bullpups 18 to 9, but the game was well in control with McPherson at the the throttle.

McPherson was led with four players in double figures with junior Gabe Pyle scoring 27 points on the afternoon, Pyle was name to the all-tournament team and was the MVP of the tournament. Owen Pyle added 14 going four for six from the arc. Cory Muehler had 10 and senior guard Kyden Thompson scored 12 adding 6 assists.

Hutch High was led in scoring with Julian Smith and Terrell King scoring 13 and 12 points respectively. Both Smith and King were named to the all-tournament team. Jax Heneha had 8, Tai Clark 7 and Devon Spiller added 2. The Salthawks were 2 of 17 from the arc and shot 31.3% from the field for the game.

Ironically, Hutchinson had averaged giving up 51 points per contest this season. McPherson eclipsed that number early in the 2nd half.

McPherson just had everything working for them on this Saturday afternoon in January.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (8-2) returns home on Tuesday to host the Derby Panthers at the SAC with a 7:15pm tip. Freshman and JV games will start at 4:15pm on Tuesday. Derby took 3rd place in the MIT winning over Blue Valley 63-46 in the 3rd place game prior to the Championship.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma had 23 points, Cam Carter scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half and Kansas State beat Oklahoma State 70-66 Saturday night, handing the Cowboys their fifth loss in a row.

Tylor Perry, with 1.2 seconds left on the shot clock, lobbed an inbound pass from the baseline to Carter for an alley-oop layup to give Kansas State a 68-66 lead with 24 seconds left. Oklahoma State lost the ball out of bounds and Carter made two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 8.7 remaining.

Kaluma, who topped the 1,000-point plateau for his career with a dunk late in the first half, made 7 of 12 from the field, including three 3-pointers. The transfer from Creighton finished with seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Will McNair Jr. added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting for Kansas State (14-4, 4-1 Big 12).

The Wildcats, who won the regular-season conference title last season, have won back-to-back games — including a 68-64 overtime win against No. 9 Baylor — and six of their last seven.

Javon Small hit a 3-pointer to give Oklahoma State (8-10, 0-5) its biggest lead of the game at 54-44 midway through the second half. McNair answered with a layup and Perry hit a 3 then converted a three-point play to trim the deficit to four with 8:39 to play. Connor Dow made a 3-pointer about a minute later to make it 59-52, but the Wildcats scored nine of the next 10 points. Carter banked in a straight-away 3 to cap the spurt and give Kansas State a 61-60 lead — its first since 20-19 — with 3:31 to play.

🏀 Kaluma scores 23 as K-State rallies late to beat Oklahoma State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia can finally enjoy some positives after going through the ringer the past eight months.

The Mountaineers have endured Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins' exit&nbsp;following a drunken driving arrest that led to a roster makeover.

Add to that a preseason health scare&nbsp;for forward Akok Akok, a nine0game suspension for guard Keith Kriisa, Jesse Edwards missing the past month with a broken wrist, and an ongoing court fight with the NCAA&nbsp;that had temporarily sidelined multiple-transfer players RaeQuan Battle and Noah Farrakhan.

Tipping the scale in the other direction was Saturday's euphoria. Battle scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Pat Suemnick added a career-high 20 points and West Virginia beat No. 3 Kansas 91-85.

“It’s a surreal moment, man,” Battle said. “It’s hard to win games like that, especially doing it at this level and being a few steps behind because we had a crazy offseason. I’m just proud of this team and the coaching staff.”

Fans stormed the court after the Mountaineers (7-11, 2-3 Big 12) improved to 7-5 against Kansas in Morgantown and broke a six-game losing streak in the series.

“That one felt good,” said West Virginia interim coach Josh Eilert,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-virginia-huggins-eilert-interim-94a2217e3fb59ec0d70b1f51afb12527">who took over a week after Huggins' arrest</a>.

“That's what our guys needed,” Eilert said. "I’m going to savor it tonight, I promise you that. We’ve been through a lot. This fan base has been through a lot. But tomorrow it’s right back to it to figure out a game plan for Central Florida.”

The win came a week after the Mountaineers beat then-No. 25 Texas, also at home.

West Virginia set the pace Saturday with an early 3-point barrage and outhustled the Jayhawks to get key free throws in the end.

Kansas (15-3, 3-2) trailed for most of the second half until KJ Adams hit two free throws for an 81-80 lead with 2:41 remaining. Suemnick answered with a bank shot over Hunter Dickinson 35 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.

West Virginia sealed the win by making nine of 10 free throws in the final 34 seconds.

“I just think we wanted it more,” Suemnick said.

Kriisa added 15 points for the Mountaineers.

Kevin McCullar led Kansas with 24 points and Dickinson scored 19. Freshman Johnny Furphy hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds in the first four minutes but went 22 minutes before scoring again and finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers, the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, made 12 of 21 (57%) from beyond the arc, including nine of their first 11.

Shooting wasn't a problem for Kansas, either. The Jayhawks went 32 of 60 (53%) from the floor.

“There's going to be games like this for everybody" in the Big 12, Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It's a monster league.”

Kansas could drop several spots in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;poll.

Kansas: It's the most points allowed this season by the Jayhawks, who ran into a determined team that has beaten two straight ranked opponents at home.

West Virginia: With Edwards still out, Eilert stressed the importance of rebounding. The Mountaineers outrebounded Kansas 31-22, the Jayhawks' lowest total this season.

“I felt like we were quicker to the ball,” Eilert said.

Kansas: Hosts Cincinnati on Monday night.

West Virginia: Plays at UCF on Tuesday night.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 14-ranked HutchCC men's basketball team bounced back from its loss earlier this week in a big way, defeating Garden City, 85-64 on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons built a 17-point halftime lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Hutchinson (15-3, 10-2 KJCCC) shot 47 percent (31-of-65) for the game and knocked down nine 3-pointers in the win.&nbsp;

Kam Thomas led the Blue Dragons with 22 points to match his jersey number, knocking down four three-point shots on six attempts, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Kernan Bundy (15 points), Dallas Whitney (14 points) and Kobe Smith (10 points) all added double-figure scoring off the bench.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons finished plus-17 on the glass, outrebounding the Broncbusters, 47-30, 14 of which were on the offensive end.&nbsp;

Braxton Jones led the Broncbusters with 23 points, while Thomas Tut added 13.&nbsp;

Garden City (11-7, 7-5) shot 35 percent from the floor (21-of-59) and 16-of-23 from the foul line for 69 percent.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 5-ranked HutchCC women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to grow its lead and eventually defeat Garden City, 73-56 on Saturday at the Sports Arena. The win marked the 12th straight win for the Blue Dragons over the Broncbusters.

Hutchinson (18-0, 12-0 KJCCC) trailed Garden City, 13-9 after the first quarter, but battled back to take a two-point lead in to halftime. The Blue Dragons outscored Garden City, 31-7 in the third quarter to build a 56-31 lead heading to the final quarter.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons hit 13-of-17 field goal attempts in the 31-point third quarter, including three-of-four from behind the arc. The Hutchinson defense held Garden City (10-7, 5-7) to 3-of-14 during the same frame.

Monae Duffy led the Blue Dragons' scoring effort with 17 points. Kiki Smith added 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Madi Dennison finished with 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Journey Armstead added seven points, nine rebounds and five assists from her point guard position.

Hutchinson shot 51 percent from the floor (31-of-60), while Garden City finished 36 percent (21-of-58).&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons were plus-14 on the glass, outrebounding the Broncbusters, 42-28. Hutchinson also dominated in the paint, outscoring Garden City, 52-24.&nbsp;

Garden City was led by Stevi Yanci with 11 points, while Sierra Driessen and Maya Nieto each added 10.

🏀 WBB: Strong third quarter keeps HutchCC unbeaten

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) –&nbsp;Kevin McCullar Jr. finished with a game-high 24 points, but it was not enough as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 91-85 on Saturday afternoon at WVU Coliseum.

West Virginia’s RaeQuan Battle scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Pat Suemnick added a career-high 20 points.

The Mountaineers (7-11, 2-3 Big 12) improved to 7-5 against Kansas in Morgantown and broke a six-game losing streak in the series.

West Virginia set the pace with an early 3-point shooting barrage and made key free throws in the end.

Kansas (15-3, 3-2) trailed for most of the second half until KJ Adams Jr. hit two free throws for an 81-80 lead with 2:41 remaining. Suemnick answered with a bank shot over Hunter Dickinson 35 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.

Kerr Kriisa added 15 points for the Mountaineers.

Dickinson scored 19 and freshman Johnny Furphy hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds in the first four minutes and finished with 13 points. Nicolas Timberlake added 12 and Adams had 11.

🎧🎥🏀 Hutch Salthawk boys vs McPherson for MIT Championship

McPHERSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Salthawk boys basketball team found a way to rally from eight points down with 2:16 to go to advance to the Championship game of the 60th McPherson Invitational Tournament Friday night and defeat the Blue Valley Tigers 53 to 48 in a thriller at the round house in McPherson.

The Salthawks looked like they were going to make easy work of the Tigers when they had a 12 point, 14-2 lead early in the second quarter, but the Tigers clawed their way back into the game by scoring 23 second quarter points to lead 25-23 at the half.

But the tenacious Hutch High defense rallied back in the second half to pull away in the final two minutes of play to come out on top.

Hutch High Junior Julian Smith was the hero by scoring a basket while being fouled in the fourth quarter. Smith hit the and-one, plus got a steal on an in-bound play to score a basket. Later in the quarter he hit a key 3 point shot to give Hutch the lead at 50-48.

It wasn't without controversy however. Blue Valley led 39-35 going into the final quarter but a late scoreboard error gave a Salthawk basket to Blue Valley which caused confusion for both staffs.&nbsp; After the error was alerted by the officials, Hutchinson had a 50-48 lead inside of 30 seconds to play in the game.

The Salthawks forced a Tiger turnover and Julian Smith hit the back end of a two shot foul, plus Jax Heneha nailed both free throws when Blue Valley was forced to foul to extend the game. The final score ended at 53-48.

Hutchinson now meets up with the top seeded and undefeated McPherson Bull Pups in the Championship. Mac got by Derby in a close game 62 to 55 in the other semi-final game Friday night.

The Salthawks were led by Julian Smith with 18 points. Smith scored 15 of his 18 points in the 2nd half including 9 points in the final 2 minutes of the game. Terrell King had 15 including a key deep right corner 3 pointer that started the fourth quarter rally. Jax Heneha added 9 and Devon Spiller scored five.

Coming off a tough home loss on Wednesday, the No. 14-ranked Hutchinson College men's basketball team looks for a return to the win column on Saturday against the Garden City Broncbusters.

The Blue Dragons (14-3, 9-2 Jayhawk Conference) and Broncbusters (11-6, 7-4) are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be steamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Saturday's game closes out the first trip through the Jayhawk Conference schedule.

As the first half of conference play concludes, the Blue Dragons are right in the thick of the Jayhawk title chase. Currently tied for third place with Butler at 9-2. The Blue Dragons trail conference co-leaders Barton and Cowley by a single game. Garden City and Cloud County are tied for fifth in the league, two games behind the Blue Dragons and Grizzlies.

Hutchinson will open the second half of conference play on Wednesday at the Sports Arena with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Dodge City. That game concludes a rare three-game conference homestand for Hutchinson.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas players have lobbied for Antonio Pierce to get the job full time ever since he became the Raiders interim coach at midseason. He got the job on Friday. Pierce is the fourth interim coach the Raiders have elevated. The others were Art Shell, Tom Cable and Marty Feldman. Pierce took over as interim coach on Halloween night after Josh McDaniels was fired. The Raiders went 5-4 under his watch and the team went 8-9 overall.

Atlanta Falcons complete a second interview with former Patriots coach Bill Belichick

ATLANTA (AP) — Bill Belichick has completed his second coaching interview with the Atlanta Falcons, moving closer to joining the franchise that endured its biggest disappointment with him on the opposite sideline. The Falcons also met virtually with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. But all eyes were on Belichick amid reports that he was the team's top choice and had flown to Atlanta on one of owner Arthur Blank's private jets. The Falcons haven't had a winning season since 2017 and have never won a Super Bowl. Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Stanford's Tara VanDerveer tied Mike Krzyzewski as winningest coach in college basketball history with her 1,202nd victory, guiding the No. 8 Cardinal past Oregon 88-63 while losing leading scorer Cameron Brink for the final three quarters with a leg injury. VanDerveer can set the record Sunday, when she goes for 1,203 as Stanford hosts Oregon State. A couple dozen former Stanford players are expected to be on hand for the potential milestone. Kiki Iriafen led Stanford with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Chance Gray scored 19 points for Oregon.

Josh Hader agrees to $95 million, 5-year contract with Astros, AP source says

Aa person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that hard-throwing reliever Josh Hader and the Houston Astros have agreed to a $95 million, five-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical. Hader's deal can be considered the most lucrative for a relief pitcher, even while falling short of the total dollars in Edwin Díaz's $102 million, five-year contract with the New York Mets that began last year. Díaz's contract includes $26.5 million in deferred payments he won't completely receive until 2042 and was valued at $93.2 million for baseball's luxury tax.

Judge ends suspension of Illinois basketball star Terrence Shannon Jr., who faces rape charge

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A federal judge has reinstated Illinois basketball star Terrence Shannon Jr., who had been suspended from the team since he was charged with rape in Kansas. U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Lawless found that the university had violated Shannon's civil rights. The judge noted that Shannon has a right to pursue his basketball career and make money from endorsements "while he is presumed innocent of the criminal charges." Illinois says in a statement that Shannon will be available to participate in practices and games. Shannon was charged on Dec. 5 in Douglas County, Kansas, with rape or an alternative count of sexual battery.

Florida is under NCAA investigation a year after a failed NIL deal with QB signee Jaden Rashada

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's football program is under NCAA investigation a year after a failed name, image and likeness deal worth more than $13 million with former signee Jaden Rashada. The Gators released the NCAA's notice of inquiry Friday to The Associated Press and the Tampa Bay Times after the newspaper's lawyers got involved. The NCAA's letter, dated June 9, 2023, is addressed to school president Ben Sasse and states the NCAA enforcement staff has begun an investigation into the football program. Names of investigators were redacted, and Rashada was not mentioned.

Sports Illustrated employees left in limbo as publisher faces money troubles

The jobs of people who produce Sports Illustrated were in limbo after the company that paid to maintain the iconic brand's print and digital products told staff that its license was revoked. In an email to employees Friday morning, the Arena Group, which operates Sports Illustrated and related properties, said that because of the revocation, "we will be laying off staff that work on the SI brand." Authentic later said in a statement it intends to keep Sports Illustrated going. The company is negotiating with Arena and other publishing entities to determine who will do that, according to a person with knowledge of the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Jack Burke Jr., Hall of Famer who was the oldest living Masters champion, has died at age 100

Hall of Fame golfer and two-time major champion Jack Burke Jr. has died at age 100. He had been the oldest surviving Masters champion. His passing was confirmed Friday by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife. When Burke finished his playing career, he joined Jimmy Demaret to found Champions Golf Club in Houston. The club went on to host the Ryder Cup, the U.S. Open and most recently the U.S. Women's Open in 2020. Burke won the PGA Championship and Masters in 1956 among his 16 titles. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Alcaraz cruises into fourth round of Australian Open; Azarenka rises to Ostapenko challenge

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz is into the fourth round of the Australian Open after his opponent, Shang Juncheng, retired through injury early in the third set of their third-round encounter. The No. 2 was leading 6-1, 6-1, 1-0 when Shang quit due to a leg injury. Last year's semifinalist Tommy Paul squandered a match point as he was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 by Miomir Kecmanovic. Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka ousted No. 11 Jelena Ostapenko 6-1, 7-5 while Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska equaled her best major performance by making the last 16. HUTCHINSON, Kan. - In a home game postponed from last week, the Hutch High Salthawks used a big second half and great shooting by junior guard Grace Posch to beat Maize 43 to 26 Thursday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.

Hutch High snapped a two game losing streak with the win to go to 5-3 on the year.

The Salthawks will participate in the Emporia High School Glaciers edge tournament next week opening with AVCTL foe Derby at 5:30pm on Thursday, January 25th in Emporia.

McPHERSON, Kan. - Both Hutch High and St. James Academy started out slow unitl St. James hit a basket and a foul shot with 4:46 to go in the first quarter. Then the Salthawks jumped out to a 15 to 5 lead going into the 2nd quarter and extended it to a 13 point lead at the half in the first round of the 60th annual McPherson Invitational Tournament.

The Salthawks built the lead to 21 points at one time in the second half before the Thunders scored 16 points against the Salthawk reserves in the final quarter.&nbsp; Final score, Hutchinson&nbsp; 45, St. James Acadamy 34.

Hutchinson was led by Julian Smith with 14 points including 4 three point baskets. Terrell King followed with 10 points. Jax Heneha and Jay Lewis both scored 7 points. Devon Spiller 2, Tai Clark 3 and Taishaun Govain had 2.

Jack Alters led the Thunder with 6 points. Emmitt Peters came off the bench to add 5 points.

Hutchinson, now 7-1, will meet Blue Valley Randolph at 6:10pm in one of the semi-final games on Friday night. McPherson (7-0) won big over Wichita Bishop Carroll, while Derby defeated Lawrence Free State in the other first round games.

HOUSTON (AP) —Jack Burke Jr., who was the oldest living Masters champion and staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday in Houston. He was 100.

Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom.

“Why did golf give us 34 rules when God only gave us 10 commandments?” he said over dinner at his home in Houston in 2000, one of endless examples of a sharp wit always grounded in common sense.

His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife, Robin.

Burke won two majors in 1956 when he was the PGA player of the year, none more famous than his staggering rally at the Masters when he started the final round eight shots behind Ken Venturi. In conditions so blustery only two players broke par, Burke posted a 1-under 71 for a one-shot victory over Venturi, who shot 80.

Later that year, Burke defeated Ted Kroll, 3 and 2, to win the PGA Championship.

Those were among his 16 victories on the PGA Tour, including four straight in early 1952, three of them by six shots or more. He was on five straight Ryder Cup teams and won seven of his eight matches. The lone loss was in 1957 when Burke was a playing captain and Great Britain won for the first time since World War II.

Burke’s last PGA Tour victory was in 1963, but his career was far from over. He was as much a teacher as a player, and a Texan through and through.

Born in Fort Worth, he grew up in Houston while his father, Jack Burke, was the head pro at River Oaks Country Club. His father died when Burke was serving in the Marines during World War II, where he taught combat skills at Miramar near San Diego.

That saber-toothed tiger would eat you.”Burke was perturbed when a member at Champions asked him for a quick look at his swing. Burke offered a suggestion and as he walked away, the member said, “Thanks for the tip.”“I don’t give tips,” Burke wrote in his book. “This isn’t Churchill Downs. It took me 60 years to acquire the knowledge necessary to offer that man a suggestion. Just because the advice comprised one sentence doesn’t mean it didn’t include a lot of thought.”His book was titled, “It’s Only a Game,” and was published in 2006, two years after he served as an assistant captain at the Ryder Cup in 2004 at Oakland Hills, where Europe recorded its biggest victory. Burke cited the high-priced tuxedos they wore to the gala as an example of how riches in golf had softened the players. He also mentioned how much players seemed to enjoy their time playing table tennis and video games.“I closed my eyes and imagined Ben Hogan sitting at the car racing game, his hat turned backwards, giggling and shouting to Arnold Palmer, who was waiting his turn,” Burke wrote.He was old-school even when he was young, the son of a PGA professional, a straight shooter from Texas who learned from Claude Harmon and others.Burke was part of the original PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and was among PGA champions not ushered into the new World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998 in Florida. But he was the first one selected through the Veteran’s Category in 2000.Burke was among eight inducted that evening and as he stood at the podium on a typical emotional ceremony, he quipped, “With all these tears, I might be standing in casual water.”But he paid a somber tribute to so many PGA professionals who were not in the new shrine, from Harmon to Jack Grout, Johnny Revolta to Paul Runyan.“Without these great teachers, none of us would be in here,” Burke said. “Those fellas are probably not going to get in the Hall of Fame, but I want to say to you tonight, ‘You’re coming in with me.’ I’m bringing the teachers in.”His second wife, Robin, was the Curtis Cup captain in 2016 and helped Burke run Champions. The club hosted the U.S. Women’s Open in December 2020. Burke was 97 and still engaging, a twinkle in those blue eyes, irreverent as always.“The USGA has never owned a golf course,” he said that week at his home. “But they come to your course and tell you how to run it.”
