KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Zack Greinke on Thursday was named the 2023 Fielding Bible Award winner at the pitcher position, as announced by Sports Info Solutions.

This marks the 18th&nbsp;season that Sports Info Solutions has honored the best defensive players in Major League Baseball with the Fielding Bible Awards, which are voted on by a panel of experts who consider statistical analysis and the eye test.

Greinke received 9 of the 16 1st-place votes and was voted No. 1 or 2 on all but one ballot.

Greinke finished the 2023 season 2nd&nbsp;among pitchers with 6 Defensive Runs Saved, trailing only&nbsp;Jesús Luzardo&nbsp;(7). Greinke is now the all-time leader among pitchers with 93 Defensive Runs Saved – which has been tracked since 2003 – ahead of&nbsp;Mark Buehrle&nbsp;(87) and&nbsp;Jake Westbrook&nbsp;(63).

Zack allowed only 2 stolen bases over 142.1 innings in 2023. Just two pitchers had more innings with 2 steals or fewer:&nbsp;Michael Lorenzen&nbsp;(2 SB in 153.0 IP) and&nbsp;Ryne Nelson&nbsp;(2 SB in 144.0 IP). Greinke also had 5 pickoffs in 2023, matching his career high set in 2012, while tying teammate&nbsp;Taylor Clarke&nbsp;for the American League lead among pitchers this season.

Greinke completed his 20th&nbsp;Major League season in 2023. He is the active leader among pitchers (min. 300 total chances) with a .989 fielding percentage and 62 double plays. He has not made an error in his last 145 total chances, which is the longest active streak among pitchers, according to&nbsp;Elias.

This marks Greinke's third Fielding Bible Award, following 2018 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and 2019, when he split time with the Diamondbacks and Houston Astros. Greinke's three Fielding Bible Awards rank 3rd&nbsp;among pitchers since the award was first established in 2006, trailing only&nbsp;Dallas Keuchel&nbsp;(5) and Buehrle (4).

Greinke is the first Royals pitcher to win the Fielding Bible Award and fifth different Royals player (8th&nbsp;instance) to earn the honor at any position. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is in concussion protocol, putting his status for this week's game against the Cincinnati Bengals in doubt. Coach Kyle Shanahan said that Purdy reported symptoms on the flight home after Monday night's loss in Minnesota and was placed in the protocol. But their traditional, end-of-the-season, standalone matchup will remain a nonconference game so it can be played after conference championships.

Report: Outside firm gave NCAA evidence of Michigan's sign-stealing scheme to trigger investigation

The Washington Post is reporting that the NCAA's inquiry into a sign-stealing scheme by Michigan's football program was triggered by an outside firm's investigation. The firm turned up videos of and documented plans and budgets for impermissible scouting of the Wolverines' opponents. The Post, citing two people familiar with the matter who were not identified, reported the firm obtained computer drives maintained and accessed by multiple Michigan coaches. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Associated Press that an outside firm provided the NCAA with evidence that initiated the association's investigation. The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

Struggling Sergio Perez of Red Bull says return to Mexico his most important race of the season

Sergio Perez was still in Texas when he declared his return to the Mexico City Grand Prix his most important race weekend of the season. He needs the feel of home soil and a warm embrace from a national fan base that adores him. Perez is fighting to hold second in the season championship but has been criticized as a subpar teammate to dominant Max Verstappen. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Kansas freshman forward Johnny Furphy is one of 20 players named to the 2024 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.

Furphy looks to make it the second-consecutive year a Jayhawk has won the 2024 Julius Erving Award, as KU’s Jalen Wilson won the award last season.

Furphy, a small forward from Melbourne, Australia, joined the team in August 2023. Known for his length, athleticism and ability to knock down threes, Furphy is described as a player that attacks the basket and can finish above the rim.

Furphy played high school basketball for Centre of Excellence (CoE), a developmental program in Australia. Playing for CoE, Furphy averaged 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Furphy reclassified to the 2023 class and garnered attention when he participated in various NBA Academy events in the United States, including the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta in July 2023.

Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor is in its ninth year recognizing the top small forwards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 27. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Julius Erving Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Irving and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2024 Julius Erving Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Karl Malone (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women’s Starting Five.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Because of the high potential of cold and wet weather on Sunday, the Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department has moved the Blue Dragon women's soccer team's opening-round Region VI Tournament game has been rescheduled.

The fourth-seeded Blue Dragons (12-4-3) will play host to fifth-seeded Butler (9-5-5) at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The game was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, but the forecast for then is 38 degrees with better than a 50-percent chance of rain and potentially and rain-snow mix.

The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:55 p.m.

The Hutchinson/Butler winner will play the Barton/Coffeyville winner on Thursday November 2 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

⚽ Dragons' Region VI Soccer matchup moved to Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Playing at home for the first time in three weeks, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team rallied from down one set to defeat the Garden City Broncbusters in five sets on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons posted season highs for kills and digs in defeating Garden City 23-25,25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 15-3 on Sophomore Recognition Night.

Hutchinson improved to 23-13 overall and remained in second place in the KJCCC at 10-4. The Blue Dragons travel to first-place Barton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Garden City dropped to 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the league.

The Blue Dragons are now 5-3 in five-set matches this season.

Sophomore outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with her 18th double-double of the season. She had a match-up 18 kills on .218 hitting with a career-high 21 digs. Now with 510 kills for the season, Golden moved into fifth place on the Blue Dragon single-season kills list. Her 929 career kills are the second most in program history.

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/ravenhani_giovanna_k9db">Giovanna Ravanhani</a>&nbsp;had 42 assists and had her eighth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Ravanhani had seven kills on .389 hitting. Ravanhani is now eighth on the Blue Dragon season assist list with 1,152 and eighth on the career assist list with 1,551 assists.

Sophomore middle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had 10 kills on .276 hitting. She had three blocks, four digs and a career-high five set assists. Dean moved into the career Top 10 in total blocks with 224 blocks. Her 149 season blocks rank 15th on the single-season list.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/long_ashlyn_ig40">Ashlyn Long</a>&nbsp;finished with nine kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/briseno_alejandra_xati">Alejandra Briseno</a>&nbsp;had six kills and six digs.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/murphy_mckenzie_k4jq">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;had six kills and four blocks.

The Blue Dragons had 61 total kills, the second-highest total this season and finished hitting .188. The Dragons had 7.5 team blocks, a season-high 95 digs and two service aces.

The Dragon defense raised its game in the final two set. Hutchinson had 31 digs over the final two sets and 4.5 blocks in the fifth set alone. The Blue Dragons held Garden City to .003 hitting in the final two sets.

Set 3: Garden City got its offense untracked in the third set. The Busters had 17 kills on .306 hitting in the third set while the Dragons had 14 kills on .200 hitting. The Dragons took an 11-9 lead after a Golden kill. Garden City fought back and led 18-15 after a Tola Maczka ace. Trailing 20-16, a Ravanhani kill slowed the Buster roll, but Garden City took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-18 set victory.

Set 4: The Dragon defense started to take command of the match in the fourth set, bringing up 20 digs in the fourth set alone. Rollandini had eight digs in the set. The Dragons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a Murphy kill. Leading 9-7, the Dragons went on a 7-0 Rollandini service run to build a 16-7 lead. Garden City hit negative .049 in the fourth set. Hutchinson led 24-16. Garden fought off two set points, but Golden had a kill on the third for a 25-18 win to tie the match at 2-2.

🏐 Dragons win five-set thriller against Garden City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Nick Bolton had surgery in Los Angeles on his fractured wrist this week, though coach Andy Reid said Wednesday he was not sure whether the linebacker would land on injured reserve or how long he might be out.

Reid said there was no need during the procedure Tuesday for metal to be put into the wrist to support it, and that could help Bolton return to the field quicker. He already has missed three games this season because of an ankle injury.

“Drue has done a heck of a job coming in for Nick,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “Nick, he's been very vocal. He took that leadership role of getting everyone lined up. I think he's done a tremendous job in the amount of time he's had."

What also should help the Chiefs defense absorb the loss of Bolton is the return of pass rusher Charles Omenihu from his six-game suspension last week against Los Angeles. Omenihu had a sack and a pass deflection that led to an interception, and his ability to provide pressure off the edge allows Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to have more flexibility.

“I think our best game is ahead of us,” Jones said. “We're building chemistry across the defensive line, and having Charles in there, everyone being able to move around, I think it's a plus for our D-line.”

In other news, Reid said Justyn Ross would practice one day after t he 23-year-old wide receiver was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and criminal damage to property and released after posting $2,500 bond.

Ross, who is due again in court on Dec. 4., has been a bit player for the defending Super Bowl champions this season. He has been active in their first seven games but has just three catches for 34 yards on the season.

“All situations are different, obviously,” Reid said. “The law enforcement part of it, you listen to what the real details went on, and then you keep open communication ” among general manager Brett Veach and other law enforcement officials.

“Other than that,” Reid said, “I really don't have any information for you other than what we have gathered.”

He hurt his elbow during the Chiefs' win over the Broncos in Week 6, and while the injury at first appeared to be significant, Watson could be back soon. QB Patrick Mahomes has said that he enjoys playing in the snow, and that could bode well for the Chiefs with a chance of it on Sunday in Denver. “I grew up in Texas. So is his youngest child, daughter Shelomi, whose nickname is Bossy. She's a redshirt freshman point guard on the 20th-ranked Buffaloes women's basketball team. She says a healthy sibling rivalry meant the family competed in everything growing up. Not just in sports. They even completed she said to see who could say the best prayer on the way to school. She says that sibling rivalry is paying off in their respective sports.

When Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder to resurrect Colorado's slumbering football program he not only brought his sons&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deion-sanders-shedeur-colorado-buffaloes-20bdad5900bed0e75a2c2c61d1ddc96b">Sheduer</a>, a star quarterback, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deion-sanders-prime-shilo-colorado-5f9a4b22f74a93197cb071d55fbde74f">Shilo</a>, a star safety, but also his youngest child, Shelomi, a redshirt freshman point guard on the women's basketball team.

Shelomi goes by the nickname “Bossy,” a nod to the piloting personality she developed while growing up in a household full of ultra-competitive athletes and a famous father.

“Bossy?” women's hoops coach J.R. Payne asked. "Well, she hasn't been really bossy with us. But Shelomi is doing great. Shelomi came in the middle of the year last year, which is always difficult to transfer from one program to another. And the team loved her immediately. She's got a great personality. She works hard. She brings life to the party on a daily basis, so to speak.”

So, she's got some of her father's charisma.

“I just give out energy and you know, I’m always gonna smile, always gonna bring good vibes, always gonna laugh,” Bossy said. “That's just me being me.”

When Deion Sanders was asked about his youngest daughter at his weekly news conference followering a tough loss at Oregon, his eyes lit up.

“You've got to understand, my baby girl is my heart,” Coach Prime said. “I love all my kids, but I love them differently. Bossy is my baby girl. She's my heart. She has a witness protection program with her brothers. She don't ever date, she probably won't get married until she's about 40. They don't play.”

Sanders said he told Payne he would be happy to help recruit if his name might help and then gushed some more about his daughter — “just seeing her want it and go out there and work and put up 100 shots after practice on her own” — before pausing to note his unusual and beloved situation with his children on hand at Colorado with him.

“Even though we got an L, I don't consider it a loss when I get to watch my sons not only play on the field but I get to watch my son (Deion Sanders Jr.) film everything and edit it and put it out ... and I get to see my daughter come into my office and take a nap on the couch,” he said. "So I'm living a wonderful double life as a father and a coach and I love every minute of it.”

Sanders also asked what time the women's basetball team — which is ranked 20th and opens against national champion and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">top-ranked LSU</a>&nbsp;in Las Vegas next month — practiced and said he was going to have to drop by.

“I told him to just come to the games and sit with the other parents,” she said. “I don't want him coming to practice. I don't want to say I don't like the spotlight but I just want to be, like, in a sense, normal."

She knows that is an impossibility on a campus that has drawn&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/colorado-prime-deion-sanders-812245434d3291dd98caf0a6b9d86e10">a Hollywood-like scrutiny</a>&nbsp;thanks to her family's arrival last winter from Jackson State, an HBCU in Mississippi.

“We were always in the spotlight as kids, so there's not much of a difference,” Bossy said. “But there is, as well, just for the fact that we're at a Power Five and we're on the big stage. Everyone's looking at Colorado, at my brothers and my dad and what he's going to shape this program to be. So, I don't really have the words for it. It's just a really cool experience watching it all happen in front of my eyes just turning things around.

“I mean, it was kind of the same at Jackson and how we turned around the program, but it's on a bigger platform now.”

Deion Sanders' oldest daughter, Deiondra, is 31 and lives in Atlanta. Deion Jr., a.k.a “Bucky,” who played football at SMU and who runs the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/welloffforever/">“Well Off Forever”</a>&nbsp;brand on Instagram and YouTube, which often promotes the Buffaloes, is 29.

Bossy, who's 19, grew up competing mostly with Shilo, 23, and Shedeur, 21.

“We all kind of played the same sports,” Bossy said. "I like to say I was the best athlete of the family. I was. I played a little football back in the day. They played basketball, too. I feel like it made me tougher competing with them. It was always competition in the house. It started from who could pray the best.”

That's not a typo. She said pray, not play.

On the way to school, she explained, one of the siblings would lead the family prayer. So, they'd look out the window and thank God for the blue sky and the green grass and for that puppy on a walk over there.

When Bossy was finished, she'd turn to her brothers and issue the challenge, “Beat that!” And the next day Shilo or Shedeur would try to do just that.

“It was just a competition with us in everything," Bossy said. “Yeah, even in prayer. I'm surprised my dad hasn't told that story yet.”

🏈Kansas vs. No. 6 Oklahoma Set for National Spotlight on Homecoming

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Mark Francis, the winningest and longest tenured head coach in Kansas soccer history, announced his retirement on Tuesday after 25 seasons and more than 500 games leading the Jayhawks. Francis led Kansas to 262 victories, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, two Sweet 16s, one Big 12 regular-season title and one Big 12 Tournament Championship.

Francis finished his illustrious career at Kansas with a record of 262-200-49 (.561).

“We are grateful for Mark’s outstanding tenure and for his profound impact on Kansas Soccer,” Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “He has represented our University community in an exceptional manner, winning at a high level and supporting the graduation of countless outstanding Jayhawks. Because of the strong foundation he built, and the energy around women’s soccer in our region, the future of Kansas Soccer is very bright.”

Francis was named the third head soccer coach in the program’s history on December 22, 1998. In his first season at KU in 1999, Francis led the team to a school record with eight wins and the program’s first-ever ranking on Oct. 11, 1999. Over the course of his 25-year career at Kansas, Francis posted 16 winning seasons, including an 18-5 mark in 2004 and a 17-5-3 record in 2019, leading both of those teams to a Big 12 title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 2020, the program achieved its highest ranking ever at No. 5 by the United Soccer Coaches.

“Its been a privilege to be the leader of this program for the last 25 years,” Francis said. “I want to thank our current team and all of our alumni that I had the privilege to coach, my former and current assistant coaches and support staff, especially (Associate Head Coach) Kelly Miller who has been here with me the whole time.”

Francis was assisted all 25 seasons by Miller. Miller served as the goalkeepers coach and mentored several standout Jayhawks, including Sarah Peters, Julie Hanley, Kat Liebetrau and Kaitlyn Stroud. Miller, who was a part of all nine NCAA Tournament appearances, also trained two-time All-American Holly Gault, NWSL player Estelle Johnson and Caroline Van Slambrouck who has played in the NWSL, Sweden, Iceland and Spain.

In his time at Kansas, Francis coached 75 all-conference selections, 31 All-Central Region recipients, five All-Americans, four freshman All-Americans, two Big 12 Defenders of the Year, one Big 12 Rookie of the Year, 263 academic all-conference honorees, four academic All-Americans and has seen 22 Jayhawks go on to play professional soccer, including five NWSL draft picks.

Francis guided KU to 15 double-digit win seasons in his tenure. The 2004 Big 12 Coach of the Year, Francis coached in more than 230 Big 12 soccer games, which is the most of any coach in the conference’s history. His 25 years in the Big 12 Conference marked the longest tenured head coach in league history as well.

Prior to his 25 seasons at Kansas, Francis was the head coach at South Alabama (1996-98); at the Mobile Revelers (1997); at Brookhaven College (1995); and got his start at Highland Park (Texas) High School (1991-95). His Division I record finishes at 295-225-50 (.561).The London, England, native and 1987 graduate of SMU was a three-time All-American selection for the Mustangs. As a senior, he was named SMU’s Male Athlete of the Year, the Dallas All-Sports Association College Athlete of the Year and was selected to Soccer America’s All-College MVP Team. In addition, he was a two-time nominee for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding soccer player.A national search for the next leader of Kansas soccer will begin immediately.
