AP Sports Summary for October 12th, 2024:

Yamamoto outduels Darvish in historic matchup as Dodgers beat Padres 2-0 to reach NLCS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto outdueled Yu Darvish in a historic playoff matchup of Japanese-born starters, and the Los Angeles Dodgers got home runs from Kiké Hernández and Teoscar Hernández to beat the San Diego Padres 2-0 and advance to the National League Championship Series. Yamamoto allowed two hits in five innings for the Dodgers before being pulled after 63 pitches in a decisive Game 5 between the heated rivals. The Dodgers will play the New York Mets in the best-of-seven NLCS starting Sunday in Los Angeles. Darvish gave up two runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings for the Padres. Shohei Ohtani struck out three times for the Dodgers.

Padres muster no offense to support Yu Darvish's inspired pitching in NLDS loss to Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Diego Padres are headed home for the offseason. They couldn't muster any offense behind the inspired pitching of Yu Darvish and lost to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 in the decisive Game 5 of their NL Division Series. The Padres didn't score a run over the final 24 innings of the series. They finished second behind the Dodgers in the NL West and owned a 2-1 lead in the NLDS until their offense sputtered. San Diego is in strong position to make a run next year, with rookie Jackson Merrill fitting in well. Star sluggers Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado will be back looking to advance in the playoffs.

Cam Skattebo runs for 156 yards and 2 TDs, Arizona State knocks off No. 16 Utah 27-19

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Cam Skattebo ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns and Arizona State spoiled Utah quarterback Cameron Rising's return with a 27-19 victory over the 16th-ranked Utes. The Sun Devils lost quarterback Sam Leavitt for most of the second quarter, yet found a way to pull out the biggest win of second-year coach Kenny Dillingham's career. Skattebo had a lot to do with it. On a run in the third quarter, Arizona State's contact-seeking running back broke several tackles, put his hand down to keep his balance and stiff-armed another tackler for a 50-yard touchdown run. Skattebo put the game all but out of reach in the fourth quarter, breaking a tackle then outrunning Utah's defense for a 47-yard touchdown dash. Rising threw three interceptions after missing three games with a finger injury.

Oklahoma and Texas, one of college football's most storied rivalries, opens new chapter in the SEC

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Perhaps the only way the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry could have become even more intense happened when both joined the powerful Southeastern Conference in July. The series that began in 1900 immediately will rank with the best of the SEC's older ones. Oklahoma and Texas have 10 AP national titles and nine Heisman winners between them. The game is played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, a neutral site virtually equal distances from the campuses. The stadium is split with half Oklahoma crimson and half Texas burnt orange. The game is played during the Texas State Fair, creating a unique atmosphere.

Goodell sees 16 international games per year if NFL adds 18th regular season game

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league could play 16 international games every year if the regular season expands to 18 games. Goodell indicated Dublin and Rio de Janeiro are likely new host cities and says the Jacksonville Jaguars are considering increasing the number of games they play in London during stadium renovations at home. Team owners have already authorized up to eight international games. Goodell says they could double that number — creating a scenario where all 32 teams could play an international game each year. He spoke at a fan forum in London.

All aboard! Mets and Yankees only 2 stops away from first Subway Series in 24 years

NEW YORK (AP) — Two stops away from a Subway Series. When the New York Yankees advanced to the American League Championship Series on Thursday night, that put both Big Apple teams in baseball's final four for the first time in 24 years. Francisco Lindor and the New York Mets had already punched their NLCS ticket by beating Philadelphia on Wednesday. Four more wins for each club and they'd meet in the World Series for the second time, following the 2000 Subway Series won by Derek Jeter and the Yankees. Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo says: "I don't even know what the city would do, man. It would just, almost explode."

Rookie manager Carlos Mendoza's magic touch has helped resurgent Mets reach NLCS

NEW YORK (AP) — Like a lot of New York Mets this season, Carlos Mendoza got off to a terrible start. During his first eight days as a major league manager, the team was rained out three times and opened 0-5. All at home. Immediately, his decisions were scrutinized and questions arose. But fast forward six months, and it's hard to believe there was ever any doubt. Mendoza's magic touch with his resurgent team has taken the surprising Mets all the way to the National League Championship Series for the first time in nine years.

Nevada high court to review decision in ex-Raiders coach Jon Gruden's lawsuit over NFL emails

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is going to get a full Nevada Supreme Court review of a lawsuit he filed against the league over emails that were leaked to the media before he resigned from the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021. The state's highest court isn't scheduling oral arguments. But it said Thursday it will reconsider findings by three justices who split 2-1 in a decision in May. The panel said the league could move the civil case into arbitration that might be overseen by a defendant, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Attorneys for Gruden, Goodell and the league didn't immediately respond Friday to email messages. An NFL spokesperson declined to comment.

Rick Pitino makes surprise visit to Kentucky, says 'I'm so happy to be back' to support Mark Pope

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Rick Pitino was wildly cheered in a surprise return to Rupp Arena, with the Hall of Fame coach saying "I am so happy to be back" in a show of support for first-year Kentucky coach and former captain Mark Pope on Friday night at the Big Blue Madness public practice. Pitino, who guided Kentucky back from NCAA sanctions to the 1996 national championship before later becoming an enemy to the fervent fan base for coaching rival Louisville, dropped in near the end of the exhibition and received a standing ovation. Pitino, who coaches St. John's, was dressed in a blue pullover with the white UK logo.

Pochettino era of US soccer begins against Panama, with eyes on 2026 World Cup

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A new era for United States soccer is set to begin, led by an Argentine coach expected to deliver big results at the 2026 World Cup on American soil. Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino makes his U.S. debut in a pair of friendlies, leading the team against Panama on Saturday night in Austin and three days later against Mexico in Guadalajara. Pochettino was not around for the first 26 matches of the World Cup cycle while Gregg Berhalter and three interim coaches were in charge.
